Are You Spending Too Much on Halloween This Year?

According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), more than 171 million Americans will celebrate Halloween this year at a total cost of about $8.4 billion — an all-time high.

Broken down, the price tag for each person is estimated to be an average of $82.93, up from last year's $74.34. But we all know that number goes right out the window if you're a fright-night fanatic. At least mine does — on candy and costume and festivities alone. Tack on decorations, greeting cards, and pet costumes to the list (the latter of which has become BIG business to the tune of $350 million a year), and you can easily spend $100 to $200 on Halloween — a hefty price tag for what's generally considered to be a "kid" holiday.

Ward off such wickedness this October 31 by checking your receipts for hidden spending gremlins.

1. Decorations

The National Retail Federation found that 70% of Halloween shoppers plan to purchase decorations, spending $2.4 billion, while 49% — likely many of the same respondents — say they'll decorate their homes or yards. This certainly can become problematic if you're buying new, full-price decorations to add to your collection every year, but there are ways to lessen the cost.

My method, for instance, is to buy new items postseason. I never purchase any holiday decorations, Halloween or otherwise, while the season is in full swing. Even if discounts are available (Target reels you in with discounts throughout the season on its Cartwheel app, for example), you'll pay a fraction of even those discounted prices if you wait until November 1 or a couple days after to snag what's left of the haul. Granted, you may not find high-end items like yard inflatables or animatronic monsters, but I'm usually able to add a few smaller decorations to my overall Halloween aesthetic. Outdoor holiday lights and party supplies also are in abundance on clearance the day after.

2. Greeting Cards

A whopping $390 million is spent on Halloween greeting cards every year, purchased by 35.4% of Halloween shoppers. This might not makes sense to some of you, but anybody who has children in their lives — specifically nieces, nephews, and grandchildren — will recognize how Hallmark and American Greetings continue to make a killing (mostly because of the guilt we feel for not actually being present to celebrate with them), especially when you consider that the average cost of greeting cards hovers around $5. In fact, I've known people who have spent upward of $18 on a single fancy greeting card; they've been drinking too much witches' brew, for sure.

I cut costs on greeting cards for my own nephews by either buying them a year in advance like I do decorations — and I've walked away with cards at a whopping 90% off the day after Halloween — or forgoing the card altogether. Because based on my own personal experience, I can absolutely confirm that children don't care about the card whatsoever when there's also candy in the package. Skip it and it'll never be missed.

3. Candy

Okay, now we're getting into serious Halloween territory. Candy — the crux of the entire bloody celebration — rakes in an incredible $2.5 billion in September and October alone, with 94.3% of consumers surveyed by the NRF breaking out their wallets for the sugary-sweet treats.

And it's not cheap. The average person will spend $24.43 on candy this year, which represents a big chunk of the total Halloween spend average of $82.93. It's easy to see how it gets there though. Premium chocolate brands, like Hershey's, Mars, M & M's, and Reese's, are priced between $10 and $12 per large bag featuring kids/snack size servings. I've seen the per-pound cost of some of these bags between $5 and $7, which is rather expensive for run-of-the-mill chocolate.

But therein lies your savings tip: Before I purchase any bag of candy, I compare the number of pieces in the bag/how much the bag weighs with the price-per-pound designation listed on the price tag on the store shelf. Most of them have these. While larger bags may seem like the best value, often the smaller bags are more economical, comparatively.

Let's not forget, either, that you're paying for packaging and holiday marketing when you buy holiday food/candy — the brands factor in the cost of unsold post-holiday items into the cost of the bag you're buying — which means that you'll save even more if you purchase the everyday bags in the regular candy aisle opposed to those in the seasonal food section. Of course, you can reduce the price even further with app savings and coupons.

4. Human Costumes

Outside of candy, the other major Halloween expense is costumes, which takes up the biggest portion of the holiday-spending pie at $3.1 billion.

When it comes to costumes, we're already fairly savvy: 35% of costume shoppers search for the perfect outfit online, where you can find great costumes at reasonable or even discounted prices, while 29% shop in store, likely at pop-up shops like Spirit Halloween Superstores. (I receive discounts galore at Halloween by being on their email list.)

What's even more heartening from a savings standpoint is that many of us rely on social media (34%), friend and family (19%), pop culture (16%), and print media (14%) for costume ideas, the pieces for which we look for in our own closets or thrift stores.

Again, I've saved a bundle picking up full costumes, odds and ends, and accessories after the holiday; Spirit goes out of business for the year, end of day November 1, but you can snag tons of great stuff that day. I keep all those items in a box to piece meal a costume together the next year.

Another smart idea is to swap costumes and accessories among friends. Somebody in your circle may have just what you're looking for — Facebook is an excellent way to find out — so you don't have to shell out for one-use-only items.

5. Pet Costumes

We love our pets. So much so that 20 million of us are willing to fork over a combined $350 million to dress up our furbabies as waggy-tailed ghouls and goblins.

I admit that I've dressed up my own dog for a celebration at the dog park or for a neighborhood parade, but I'll let you in on a little secret: He doesn't like it one bit. And it stands to reason that yours probably doesn't either. Which is why I don't do it anymore.

Even a discounted costume is a waste, in my opinion, because if the dog doesn't destroy it trying to get it off, it'll get filthy when your pet rolls around in the dirt and other dogs' poop in hopes of sending you a message to stop humiliating it in public. Thus, if you're looking to shave real money off your Halloween expenditures this year, cut out the pet costume altogether (or reuse the filthy one). No sleep will be lost, least of all by your slobbery companion.

As a 30-something adult, I've dressed up for many Halloween parties and celebrations throughout the years. Would you believe that I've only bought my costume a handful of times? Heading to those crowded, overpriced costume pop-up shops gives me anxiety — and it certainly empties a fair share of wallets. (See also: 15 Halloween Costumes for People Who Hate Dressing Up)

To that end, check out these 20 classic and clever DIY costumes that are sure to impress any crowd.

1. Mime

French style is very in right now, so there's a good chance you have black pants and a striped shirt to make this simple mime costume. If you don't have suspenders you could always use some black tape or ribbon for the evening. But that white and black face makeup is essential.

2. Bandit

You can wear similar clothing if you'd rather dress as bandits. Exchange the face makeup for a basic black eye mask, the suspenders for a sack to carry the cash you steal. Okay. Maybe skip the crime in real life and fill that bag with candy instead.

3. Pop Art Girl

Find all your polka dot clothing and then follow this stunning makeup tutorial to create a pop art girl look right out of a Warhol or Lichtenstein painting or comic book page. 20 Simple and Cheap Halloween Costumes for Kids

I have an almost 3-year-old daughter, and she's incredibly excited to dress up for Halloween this year. The thing is, we went out shopping for costumes the other day, and I was absolutely shocked at how much these little outfits cost. I complained to my own mother who, in turn, showed me photos of some of the costumes I wore as a kid. Guess what! They were all humble and homemade. (See also: Last Minute DIY Halloween Costumes)

So, get out the glue, cardboard, and pipe cleaners. Here are 20 amazing Halloween costume ideas that are both adorable on your kid and sensible for your budget.

1. Black Cat

Dress your child in black pants and a black shirt or sweater. Use construction paper to cut out two triangles to attach to a headband for ears. Use eyeliner to draw a black triangle on your child's nose and then whiskers on his or her cheeks. Finish off by filling a long black sock with some stuffing and pinning it on as a tail.

2. Robot

Gather up any discarded boxes you were planning to recycle and use them to assemble a DIY robot costume. Paint with bright or metallic craft paint however you like. Decorate with — you guessed it — plastic bottle caps, stray buttons, and other discarded items.

3. Snail

Use brown craft paper to twist and turn into a shell for this cute snail costume. From there, you simply make a base using a square of cardboard and hot glue ribbon onto it so your child can wear the shell as a backpack.

4. Runner

Put your kid in his or her most athletic clothes — a t-shirt and shorts should do. You can add leggings if it's cold. Then choose a pair of sneakers. If you have a sweatband — great! To finish, pin one of your race numbers onto the shirt and add a finisher's medal (or borrow those items from a runner friend).

5. Aerobics Instructor

My mom taught dance aerobics in the 1980s, so I love this throwback costume that even a baby can wear. Dress baby in a onesie with leggings underneath and a pair of leg warmers. If you don't have leg warmers, cut the feet off a pair of old socks as a temporary fix. The author of the costume made a felt boom box. If you're not into sewing, make one using a small cardboard box and craft paint.

6. Angel

You can make some amazing angel wings using cardboard and coffee filters. Though this tutorial was originally intended for decorative wings, they'll attach to your child's body with ribbon much like in the snail costume instructions above.

7. Superhero

Dress your child in one color as a base and then craft a quick, no-sew cape using an old t-shirt (or you can buy one for just $1 at the Dollar Store). Then make cuffs using toilet paper rolls and a mask using construction paper. Decorate using whatever art supplies you already own.

8. Crayon

Have your child wear his or her favorite color from head to toe. These girls decided to color their hair and loft with water bottles, but you could also make a quick cap using construction paper and ribbon. Otherwise, make a label using black paper and paint that says Crayola.

9. Ghost

Your classic homemade costume. Use a sheet or large piece of white fabric as your base. Cut holes for the eyes. Or you can buy this exact same thing for $200 with 600 thread count. Your choice.

10. Fairy

Most little girls already have one of those tulle dress-up skirts. Dress her in one color leggings and a shirt and throw on the poofy skirt. Head to your Dollar Store and pick up a few fake flowers to glue onto a headband. Craft some DIY wings using cardboard, glitter, and ribbon.

11. Lego Man

If your child loves playing with Legos, this inexpensive Lego Man costume will surely be a hit. Use two cardboard boxes and some disposable bowls (or Solo cups). Glue everything together and then spray paint your favorite color.

12. Wind-Up Doll

Though this Wind-Up Doll idea is originally for a girl's costume, it could work equally well for a boy. Use a toilet paper roll, a styrofoam ball, and a cardboard cutout to make a wind-up handle and spray with gold paint. Use elastic and brass fasteners to attach to your child's arms.

13. Artist

Dress your child in all black, including a beret. Cut cardboard in the shape of an artist's palette, paint white, then add color splotches and a paintbrush. Then cut two small holes in the top so your kid can loop the whole thing around his or her neck.

14. Jellyfish

All you need is an umbrella, some ribbon (or streamers, etc.), and embellishments for this DIY jellyfish costume. Bonus: When you're done with Halloween, your child can continue to use the umbrella on rainy days for years to come.

15. Care Bears

Get the whole family involved with this no-sew Care Bears costume. You'll need sweatshirts or hoodies and matching pants. The rest requires felt, paint, glue, some pipe cleaners, and a little artistic ability. If you don't want to go to all that trouble, I think you could draw the designs on paper plates for a similar impact.

16. White Cloud

This white cloud getup would be a lot of fun to wear. After you construct your base, the bulk of the costume is made from cotton batting or polyester pillow stuffing. Use whatever you have on hand. This cloud would also be cool if you spray painted it grey or black and added a cardboard lightning bolt.

17. Game Boy

Turn your baby into a handheld gaming system with a onesie, different colored felt, and glue. This costume is seriously adorable and — as the author writes — the hardest part is waiting for it to dry.

18. Litterbug

Tampa has a Green Halloween celebration each year. In 2010, a little girl stole the show with her eco-conscious Litterbug getup, winning first place in the costume competition. Simply have your kid wear a solid color underneath a collection of taped-on (and cleaned off!) recyclables of all shapes and sizes.

19. Octopus

I laughed out loud when I saw this DIY octopus costume in my search. I've come across several variations, some with matching socks and some without. If you're on a tight budget, just use what you have around the house before buying anything new.

20. Masked Animal

If you don't have a lot of time or crafting ability, try these no-sew animal masks. The template is free and this project is a fun one to get kids involved with creating. For the rest of the costume, have your child wear simple clothing so the mask is the focus.

The 5 Most Offensive Halloween Costumes Ever

It's the one day of year when you get to be somebody else. Just make sure your portrayal of that somebody else isn't offensive.

Why? Well, for starters, because it's not nice. But perhaps a more convincing reason is because we live the age of smartphones and social media. If you wear a horribly repugnant costume to a Halloween party, chances are pretty good that you'll end up in the Internet's hall of shame. And once your name and photo start popping up on the blogosphere, there's no erasing that. Your career and credibility will tumble into a perpetual state of jeopardy. To avoid this unwelcome fate, we suggest following this simple formula: If you wouldn't want a photo of you in your costume circulating on the Internet, then don't wear it. Seems simple enough, right? Well, apparently not. Read on for our roundup of some of the most offensive costumes worn by folks who just didn't think it through.

1. Boston Marathon Bombing Victim

Not only did Alicia Ann Lynch, 22, of Michigan, wear red-splattered running gear and fake blood dripping down her face and legs, she also posed with a toothy grin for a photo while wearing said costume and posted it to her Twitter feed. Big mistake.

Lynch, who wore her ill-chosen Halloween costume to an office party, was promptly fired. Then she and her parents swiftly became the target of cyberbullying and death threats that persisted for months.

"I have been fired from my job," Lynch tweeted. "I am paying for what I thought was a simple joke. I know it was wrong now. I wasn't thinking. I'm sorry."

2. Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman

Half-brothers William Filene and Greg Cimeno of Florida dressed as a black-faced Trayvon Martin and a trigger-happy George Zimmerman. Then their mother posted a picture of them on one of her social media accounts. No, not because she wanted to publicly shame them for their racial insensitivity. Rather, because it was Halloween and she wanted to show off her sons' costume choice.

In the photo, the man dressed as Zimmerman makes a gun with his fingers and holds it to his brothers' head.

"Happy Halloween from Zimmerman & trayvon," wrote Caitlin Cimeno, the boys' mother. She punctuated the caption with an emoji smiley face.

Caitlin Cimeno was fired from her job after social media users tracked down her employer, which terminated her position.

3. A Member of the Ku Klux Klan

Jessica Black of Virginia dressed her 7-year-old son as a Klansman for Halloween. She even sewed the white robe and hood herself. Not surprisingly, people were enraged.

"It's a family tradition," Black told a reporter for a local television station.

"I did tell him that if you do it, you know there's going to be people talking about you, there's going to be people saying bad things about you when you do wear it," she said.

When asked by a reporter why he wanted to celebrate the holiday dressed in KKK garb, the small boy replied, "'Cause it was cool."

4. The Twin Towers on 9/11

College students Amber Langford and Annie Collinge, both 19 and British, dressed as the north and south towers of the World Trade Center during the September 11 attacks. The University of Chester students' costumes featured smoke, flames, crashing planes, and dozens of people falling to their deaths.

The costumes won the girls the "Best Dressed" accolade at the pub where they celebrated the holiday. It also earned them a lot of disrespect across the pond, particularly from the families of 9/11 victims.

"I can't begin to tell you how angry and disgusted I am," said Liz Gilligan, whose husband died in the attacks. "To say I'm shocked and upset is an understatement."

Langford, Collinge, and the pub that rewarded the girls' costumes later issued public apologies for their insensitivity and poor judgement.

5. Asiana Airlines Flight Attendants

Three men in Chicago wore tattered uniforms, faux bruises, and fake blood, calling themselves the victims of the Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash in San Francisco.

Not only was their costume choice distasteful — it was also racist. The men donned name tags that read: Sum Ting Wong, Ho Lee Fuk, and Wi Tu Lo — the made-up names of the victims that were mistakenly reported in the news media after a summer intern at the National Transportation Safety Board confirmed them as the real names of the victims as a racist joke.

So here's how to make some of the hottest costumes this season yourself for less!

Striped and Wrapped

Candy Crush Saga isn't just a game. For many, it's a way of life. This sickly sweet and addicting mobile app has many adults seeing images of brightly-colored candies in their dreams each night, so bringing them to life as a Halloween costume only makes sense. Simply get a big box and paint it on the front to look like a candy grid before cutting out holes for the head, arms, and legs (or use a sandwich board for better mobility).

You can also chose to dress like Tiffi, that little girl that cries at the end of each level. Popsugar has your shopping list for all the cute-sie accessories you'll need to pull off the look.

Clash of the Clans

This is yet another obsession for kids (and their parents), but the silver lining is that the costumes aren't that complicated. This video tutorial for making up a child to look like the goblin takes patience, but isn't very expensive. Archers seem to be a simple costume as well, assuming you have a pink wig and both a green dress and hooded cloak. If you have old gear from a Renaissance Fair, you'll likely have what you need to dress up as many of the characters in this game.

Lego Minifig

This trend never seems to die out, and once again, Pinterest is full of Lego character costumes. While everyone can get the "box body" pretty easily, the head is what give people trouble. This Instructables shows you step-by-step how to get it done in one weekend!

Minion

These little creatures from the Despicable Me franchise have been a huge success as both adult and kid costumes. Their simple features make them easy to duplicate in a DIY project. Most of the projects I've seen involve nothing more than a yellow hooded sweatshirt worn under a pair of denim overalls. Add some black rounded glasses and a toolbelt, and you have yourself a fashionable version of this cartoon trend! Or, check out this tutorial for an accessory Minion hat!

Monster High

As much as I can't relate to this trend (I have five little boys), I do see it as any easy win for the DIY costume crowd. A private school uniform skirt and blouse altered slightly with some iron-on patches of spooky spiders or webs will go nicely with a black studded belt, black tights, and some creepy hair accessories. Don't forget to paint a few scars or stitches on the face!

Doctor Who

This is one alien that won't cost a fortune to replicate. Since any human can get away with looking like our time-traveling friend, you simply have to pick your favorite regeneration and buy the appropriate accessories. Will it be a bowtie? A fez? Something vintage, like a scarf? While some Doctors (like the 11th) weren't as quirky looking — and you might get confused with the Fonz — you can always prove a point with your own homemade Sonic Screwdriver!

Mario and Luigi

The NES may no longer be functional, but the legacy of the two most famous Italian plumbers lives on! Mario and Luigi costumes are still for sale at major retailers, so it's a safe bet to make at home. A pair of denim overalls can be dyed bright blue and paired with a red long-sleeve tee for Mario (green for Luigi) and topped off with a red or green baseball cap. Mustaches are easy to find, too!

A Selfie

In this selfie-obsessed world, what's more fashionable than a pic of you? This tutorial for putting together an Instagram frame is brilliant and surprisingly not too complicated. It's an acceptable solution for tweens and teens who may be forced to take younger siblings out trick-or-treating, but feel lame "dressing up."

Someone who doesn't like dressing up for Halloween, but must in order to attend a party and/or adhere to social norms.
Someone who does like dressing up, but is close to a person who doesn't. Let's call the person who doesn't like dressing up "Greg." And you want to convince Greg that wearing a costume isn't so bad, so, Greg, can you please just look at this list and pick something to wear to the party this weekend? Honey? Greg? Please?

Well, don't worry, Greg (or whoever else might be reading). I've compiled a list of easy, minimal Halloween costumes — things that only require clothes you already own, single props to carry around, or other absolute-minimum efforts so that you can get those costume lovers off your back. 1. You...With a Mustache

It's a mustache on a stick. When someone says, "Hey, where's your costume?" you hold it up to your face. Other times, you don't hold it up. Done.

2. Casual Batman

Wear a Batman half mask with whatever else you want. Also works for other superheroes.

3. Doctor Who or Amy Pond

If you dress up as the Matt Smith version of Doctor Who, pretty much all you need to do is look dapper. The BBC has a guide for dressing up as Amy Pond, although when I went as her, I just wore skinny jeans, a plaid shirt, and sneakers. If you want to go above and beyond, you can put tally marks on your arms to help remember how many times you've seen The Silence.

4. Whatever Sport You Play...Player

Just wear your fitness gear. Go as a baseball player, hiker, yogi — whatever you have.

5. Mouse Ear

I love this ridiculous thing — it's just a mouse coming out of both ears. I imagine it's also good if you'll be somewhere that you want to block the sound of screaming children (or adults, if you're at one of the more… sophisticated haunted houses).

6. Under-Dressed Beauty Queen

All you need is a sash to wear over your clothes. Do a modern, well-recognized beauty queen or something silly or old timey.

7. Charlie Brown

Ah, yes — a costume so iconic that all you need is a t-shirt.

8. Umbrella Jellyfish

Forget about the outfit — to make this umbrella jellyfish work, you just need the umbrella-and-tendril part — which you can easily close up and carry when you don't feel like being dressed up.

9. Anthony Michael Hall's Character From "Sixteen Candles"

I love this simple costume — a pastel dress shirt and a pair of women's underwear to occasionally hold up.

10. Error 404: Costume Not Found Shirt

The Best and Worst Things to Buy in October 2012

October is a strange month for shopping, since we're now within a stone's throw of the biggest shopping event of the year: Black Friday. It's smart to to put off most purchases until the attention-grabbing deals start flowing in next month.(See also: Shopping Calendar: The Best Time to Buy Anything)

But there are still notable sales that are unique to this fall month. And in between sipping pumpkin-flavored drinks and carefully planning the perfect costume for an upcoming Halloween party, consumers are likely to do a bit of shopping. So we've mined the extensive dealnews archives of sales, coupons, and individual products from the past few seasons to guide you in your quest for the most savvy purchases in October. Here's what we found.

Modest Costume Deals Before Halloween

Sure, the best time to buy a Halloween costume starts November 1. But you'll still see decent sales on costumes the week before the holiday, with numerous stores also offering stacking coupons to sweeten the deal. For example, BuyCostumes offered a coupon that took an extra 20% off items early in October last year, but mid-month (as well as the week before the holiday), the store increased that discount to an extra 30% off, which applied to a sale that took up to 85% off. Look to The Children's Place, Diapers.com, Hot Topic, and Joann Fabric, among others, for pre-holiday discounts. Of course, don't wait too long, otherwise you'll have to deal with expensive expedited shipping in order to receive your getup in time.

After the holiday, shoppers can go pretty much anywhere and find clearance sales that discount both costumes and decorations. Unless you fear that you'll grow sick of the standard witches and broomsticks, stock up on cheap decorations post-holiday and can store them for next year. Expect discounts of 50% to 90% on themed items.

No Hot Deals on Cold Weather Apparel

Although chilly weather has started to blanket some of the country making winter apparel seems like a savvy investment, the sharpest discounts on cold weather apparel and accessories won't come until January. If you just can't wait until after the New Year, you should at least try holding out until November for the best deals. Around Black Friday a wealth of apparel retailers will offer their best coupon of the year, which may take a full 50% off or more — an excellent discount on current-season items. Expect to see such a coupon from retailers like American Eagle, Aeropostale, Nautica, Abercrombie & Fitch, Express, Lands' End, Dockers, Ann Taylor, and more.

Deep Discounts on Denim

While September is a good time to find denim deals, so too is October, as retailers continue to try to move the styles they'd hoped to sell during Back to School season. Last year, we saw Editors' Choice worthy discounts from Levi's, Lee Jeans, Target via its Mossimo line, MNRKY, and Armani Exchange. We also saw moderate sales on jeans from retailers like Lucky Brand, Express, New York & Company, American Eagle, and more. Just keep in mind that you could potentially get as good or a better discount on remaining denim styles by waiting for that aforementioned Black Friday coupon.

Hold Off on New Electronics

We're so close to Black Friday that, if you can help it, you should avoid buying electronics and new devices. There's of course no guarantee that wish-listed electronics will see those famed rock-bottom prices during Black Friday weekend, but across many electronics categories, we see the best prices of the year in November and especially around Black Friday weekend.

Most people are aware that this is a trend for TVs and budget laptops, but select digital cameras, media players, and home theater components could also see their best prices of the year in just a few short weeks — before they're replaced by newer models next year. We also recommend holding off on most Apple products too; although the brand doesn't exactly see "fire sale" prices on new items at any point during the year, Black Friday weekend is a chance for resellers to make some of their largest discounts on current-generation Apple products.

No Hot Cookware Deals

In preparation for the biggest cooking holiday of the year, you might want to round out the items missing from your cookware collection. But wait until November and you could see about 25% more cookware and appliance deals overall. Even better, there will be double the number of Editors' Choice offers as well, which of course means some of the best prices of the year. In years past, you could get your mitts on discount cookware, cutlery sets, bakeware, and small appliances from stores like Macy's, Amazon, Sears, Oneida, Williams Sonoma, Kohl's, and more. This uptick in high-caliber deals will continue into December, albeit with a slight drop off.

End of Season Sales for Garden Plants

While dealnews tends to specialize in the things that make your garden grow, rather than the things that are actually growing in it, our research shows that October is a good month for investing in shrubbery, floral bulbs, and other plants that have a shelf life. According to LifeHacker, "If you have a cellar or other area to store plants over the winter, you can jump in now and get these items very cheaply."

Get Auto Deals on Last Year's Models

Likewise, we certainly don't list cars on our site, but many reliable sources state that October is a good month to get a discount on a new car. New models are released in September, and dealerships begin to get anxious to move cumbersome stock items throughout September and October. According to Forbes, you can save 10% to 20% or more this month on a new-to-you car. The car experts at Edmunds.com also suggest buying a model that's "about to be discontinued or redesigned." They warn though that these cars will depreciate much faster than those that are newly released, so this tactic is best suited to people looking for a long-haul purchase.

No Power Savings on Big Appliances Yet

Conventional wisdom says to buy large appliances in September and October, because this is when manufacturers like LG, Maytag, and Whirlpool debut their new models. However, according to our archives, you'll see at least double the number of Editors' Choice deals on these items in November. Moreover, there will be more than twice as many deals in November that discounting washers, dryers, vacuums, and the like from department and home improvement stores.

HDTV Deals on High and Low End Sets Begin to Ramp Up

Traditionally, Black Friday is the best time to get an HDTV deal, whether you're in the market for a main set for your living room or an additional set for the bedroom. That said, we're still a few weeks away from the main event and if you simply can't wait, there are some deals to be had today.

On the high-end side, we have seen 55" 3D LCD HDTVs hit a rock bottom price of $949. Although it was a one-time deal in August, we wouldn't be surprised to see this price-low again. Overall, for high-end 3D 55" TVs, look for prices between $949 and $999. If 3D is still too expensive for your blood, off-brand 42" sets have been seeing impressive lows as well. All summer we've seen prices on these sets comfortably under $300. This includes sets from manufacturers like Westinghouse, Seiki, and TLC. Rule of thumb — look for deals from $230 to $290.

Prices on Ivy Bridge Systems Continue to Drop; Windows 8 on the Horizon

October promises to a be an interesting month for laptop deals. We predict an abundance of deals on mainstream 15" Core i5 Ivy Bridge systems, which had already hit an astonishingly low price of $400 in September. Though with the release of Windows 8 in late October there's a chance we'll see an uptick in prices as new hybrid laptop/tablet models are released.

As tempting as they may seem, we recommend avoiding these hybrids as they'll demand a premium price. In addition, many of them could potentially suffer from first generation problems as they are a new breed of laptops whose hardware mixes the ultrabook with a tablet. Instead, we recommend looking for deals on Ivy Bridge systems with very-capable 15" Core i5-based system with prices ranging from $400 to about $450.

Last-Minute DIY Halloween Costumes

It's a few days before Halloween, and while I have put up Halloween decorations, I have given barely a thought to what I'll wear as I hand out pencils and candy to the little witches and goblins that visit my door. Part of my procrastination stems from the fact that I don't have children of my own hounding me for costume ideas or reminding me months before the candy-feast that Halloween is impending. Of course, I make mental notes throughout the entire month of October as I visit orange-and-black-themed shopping centers and grocery stores, but I often wait until a few days before the holiday to figure out my own costume and decide whether I stay home and hand out treats or attend a costume-themed party. However, my delay in choosing an outfit has made me more ingenious than I ever thought I could be when it comes to whipping up a costume at the last minute.

Quick and Free Costumes

Here are some ideas on making your own costumes from things around your house.

Classic White Sheet

There's the timeless white sheet as a homemade ghost, but don't just stop at a sheet; add chains from a bicycle lock for some sound effects. Tired of the ghost costume? Turn that white sheet into a Roman toga by adding a rope as a waistband and a few leaves as a head-piece.

Versatile Clothing

Who knew that an old vest could help make a fisherman? Add a few lures and fish hooks, grab a fishing pole, and don a floppy hat, and voila! The old man from the sea. A little red lipstick or face paint for goriness can turn an everyday fisherman into a haunted illusion of a fishing excursion gone awry.

Do you own a pair of denim jeans? Cowboy boots or work boots? Add a straw hat and a thick cattle-wrangling rope, tie a bandana around your neck or hat, and you're a cowboy or girl.

Cardboard Boxes

Old cardboard boxes have so many uses, especially when it comes to costumes. Turn an old square box into a television set using a few markers and a wire hanger. Add straps to the box using suspenders or belts and make the box wearable. Or decorate the square box and turn it into a million things such as a milk carton (do you want white or chocolate?), a computer printer (have paper spewing out of the top using a roll of paper towels), or a box of crayons (a few crayons could be sticking out of the top, created using a whole roll of paper towels with the outer towels colored in Crayola colors). The ideas are endless. Of course, you could also just go as a packing box: Tape some rolls of packing tape around for a quick and easy costume.

Thrift-Shop Clothing

Thrift stores know that they have some of the best bargains when it comes to costumes. That's why they often display their Halloween ideas in their store windows. Not only can you find actual Halloween costumes of yesteryear, you can find clothing for just about any occupation imaginable.

Garage Sale Bargains

Sometimes garage sales sell clothing from different eras — pieces that would make for terrific vintage costumes. Keep a look out for shawls and cloaks or top hats and canes that could create period pieces.

Mix-and-Match Costumes

A few days before Halloween, stores often mark down their seasonal products substantially. Since the majority of their stock is nearly sold out, this is a terrific time to purchase a few key costume pieces for less; mustaches, eye patches, witch hats, and straw filler are a few adaptable elements that work for a multitude of possibilities.

These low-cost, easy ideas work for both adults and kids. Homemade costumes are usually much more creative and fun to dress up in and cost less as well — a two-for-one bargain.

Halloween Is Over. Now, Go and Buy Your Costume.

With the exception of Christmas, Halloween is the most lucrative holiday for retailers. This year, Halloween sales will have topped an incredible $6 billion!

It's also a holiday that comes with a delicious treat for most stores...ALL SALES ARE FINAL. Ah yes, the usual rules for consumers don't apply here, because retailers have given themselves an adequate amount of protection from the "buy it, use it, return it" crowd. Halloween is about one night, and until that night is over, you're paying through the nose for everything.

But then, November 1st rolls around, and those same retailers now have a whole bunch of almost useless leftover stock. Most costume stores advertise 50%-75% off sales for November 1st a week before Halloween night.

As a frugal shopper, it's painful to know that a $50 costume I buy on October 30th will be available for as little as $12 a few days later. And that's why you should be running out now to buy your supplies for next year's Halloween bash. You can still be the star of the show next year, but you can spend a lot less money on costumes and spooky supplies.

Think ahead, look at the costumes available and plan accordingly. For instance, a very popular movie or singer right now may not be so popular a year down the road. There were a ton of Michael Jackson outfits this year, and if he'll always be your idol go ahead and buy them...but he certainly won't be as topical in 2010. However, some outfits are evergreen and should be considered a bargain whenever they go on sale. Batman, Superman, Spiderman and the usual super heroes will never really go out of style. Also look for the comic couple duos, like Fred and Wilma, Jack and Jill, Mario and Luigi, and Morticia and Gomez, plus the more inventive ones like Plug and Socket, Bull and Bear or Sweet and Sour.

The same rules apply for the kids, too. When it comes to costumes, they probably won't be too happy being stuck with an old costume if there's a new flavor-of-the-month next year. Just be careful if you snap up a bargain Transformer or G.I.Joe, because next year's blockbuster will come with a slew of costumes at wallet-busting prices. Again, the safe bets are the timeless super heroes, villains, cartoons, ghouls and non-specific costumes. There’s always room for a zombie, ninja, werewolf or vampire. Oh, and remember to buy a size or two bigger...kids have this annoying habit of growing like weeds between holidays. Dress-up clothes are also a bargain right now. You can snap up princess outfits, pirate gear and other cool costumes for almost nothing. No need to wait for Halloween next year, the kids can have a blast anytime.

As for the decorations, they’re always a bargain. With very few exceptions (I did see a sequin-gloved hand coming out of a grave...poor taste I think) they’re always reusable. Strobe lights, fog machines, spider webbing, skeletons, wall decor, party plates and cups — they’re all on sale right now. And as the week continues, expect to see the prices drop to 90% off. Stock up now, fill a box or two with next year’s Halloween costumes as decorations and costumes, and tuck them away in the basement, garage or attic. When October 31st rolls around next year, you’ll have all of your Halloween shopping done early...and at a fraction of the cost. Now, go hit up those sales before the bargains are all gone.

5 Reasons We’re Spending MORE on Halloween Costumes This Year

The frugal gal in me would seem poised to present several homemade options for the trick-or-treat crowd. After some careful thought and an analysis of what we truly needed for costumes the past few years, I have done a complete 180, and ended up buying some of the most expensive costumes we could find. Here’s why….

Super cheap costumes never last.

Two seasons ago, I purchased identical Batman outfits for the boys. I had spent $5 for $20 outfits on clearance. They should have made it until a couple of weeks after Halloween. They ended up tearing before we even made it inside the community party on the 31st. Tears and duct tape are what my boys remember most about the holiday. What a shame.

Stair step kids make hand-me-downs the “only” way to go.

I have three boys, ages 6, 4, and 2. Simply stated, anything I buy had better last one season, for sure. Extra points if it can last three. When choosing our costumes this year, I went with a high-end children’s clothing retailer to make my purchase. I knew from experience that these would not only be around this year, they would be around 10 years from now. (We also go with themes that are somewhat timeless. Superheroes will generally be cool for years to come. Disney movie megastars like Monsters, Inc? Not so much.)

Higher prices sometimes mean better selection (and more clothing).

Try telling your 11-year-old daughter that none of the outfits marketed to the “tween” crowd will be acceptable this year. (This “tween” Goldilocks looks eerily like this “adult” costume sold at a different website. Why can’t it look more like this one?) Instead, we will take after my daughter’s own cues, and invest in a nice pair of scrubs so that she can go as someone a bit more respectful — a veterinarian.

Bigger price tags can equal bigger savings.

Several retailers are offering 20% off their prices during these last few weeks before the big holiday. This won’t seem like much if the costume was $8 to begin with (you’ll save $1.60). If the outfit is closer to $50, however, you’ll see a good $10 knocked off the price tag, which may help you get over your initial shock of spending that much (if the first three points were lost on you). Factor in the fact that some high-end shops offer points or loyalty programs and free shipping, and you may walk away with high-quality costumes for the whole family — at a cost closer to what you were hoping to spend at that discount store.

Nothing is cooler than a box of dress-up stuff.

When friends come over to play with my boys, they are instantly mesmerized by the laundry basket hiding in their closet. No, it’s not harboring video games and trading cards. It’s filled to the brim with past years’ costumes and well-made accessories. Among the collection resides a plush dino costume, cowboy attire, plenty of Spiderman masks, and the best Jedi swords this side of the Missouri River. All are the result of carefully-made Halloween purchases, and all get plenty of use throughout the year. (They have put the phrase “Mommy, I’m bored” completely out of commission around here.)

If the thought of buying yet another plastic garbage accessory has you dreading this year’s holiday, look at it from another perspective.
