6 Items You Need to Be Prepared to Replace

It can be easy to forget that the things you own will someday need to be replaced, particularly big ticket items. There's a certain sense of finality about owning an appliance, vehicle, or piece of furniture that may make it seem like you'll never have to worry about getting another one again. But there is a finite lifespan for everything, and ignoring that is how stressful financial emergencies can surprise you. If you haven't thought about the fact that your aging refrigerator will eventually need to be replaced, you won't be financially prepared when it finally gives up the ghost.

That's why it's a good idea to know the average lifespan of every big-ticket item you own, so you can plan ahead for when you will have to replace them. Here's what you need to know about when to replace your most expensive durable goods, and how you can save up for these replacements without stress.

1. Car

Even if you plan to drive your car until the wheels fall off, there will likely be a point at which you face the difficult question of whether to repair or replace your vehicle when it begins showing signs of age. In general, you can expect to get no more than 10 to 12 good years out of your car, and replacing it with a good quality used car can set you back as much as $15,000 to $20,000. And this is assuming your car has no major problems and you never get into an accident prior to the 10-year mark.

If you have a car payment, it's a good idea to continue to pay yourself the amount of that payment each month after you have satisfied the loan, so that when you inevitably reach the end of your car's life, you'll have money for a new set of wheels.

If you own your car outright, the good news is that it doesn't take much per month to save up $15,000 to $20,000 in 10 to 12 years. Set aside between $110 and $170 per month in a high-interest account, and you'll have created a new car nest egg.

2. Car tires

Of course, your car won't last 10-12 years on one set of tires, so you'll need to replace them. In general, you can expect to get five years out of a set of tires, so you'll probably have to replace your tires twice in the lifespan of your car.

A new set of tires cost an average of $525 to $725, according to Angie's List. To be prepared for this expense in five years, you'd need to set aside between $8.75 and $12 per month.

3. Mattress

While the myth that your mattress doubles in weight every eight years from the accumulation of dead skin, sweat, and dust mites is touted specifically to sell mattresses, it is true that your mattress does need to be replaced after a while. Depending on the mattress manufacturer, you should expect to replace your mattress every eight to 10 years. The true indicator that you need a new mattress is the quality of your sleep. If your aging mattress feels uncomfortable and you wake up sore and poorly rested, it may be time to buy a new one.

A new mattress costs between $800 and $1,000, which means you only need to set aside about $8.35 per month to be ready to buy a new mattress in 10 years. (See also: How to Buy a Mattress in 10 Minutes or Less)

4. Couch

We've all had the experience of being swallowed up by a fraying couch that has lost its structural integrity. But how long does it take a sofa to go from a comfy spot to watch TV to a black hole that seems to consume your guests?

The average life of a couch purchased today is between seven and 15 years. According to ForRent.com, the average sofa-buyer spends just over $1,000 for a new couch, although you can generally expect a longer lifespan the more money you spend on your couch initially.

To be ready for a new couch in seven years, you'll only need to set aside about $12 per month.

5. Kitchen appliances

According to This Old House, the average gas range can last about 15 years before needing to be replaced, while refrigerators have an average lifespan of 13 years, and dishwashers and microwaves are generally ready for retirement after nine years.

Costs vary pretty widely to replace each of these items, depending on the type and features of the new appliances you choose. However, according to Consumer Reports, the best-rated ranges cost between $1,500 and $2,000, while you can expect to pay between $600 and $1,200 for a good-quality new refrigerator, an average dishwasher will cost between $250 and $1,000, and a new microwave will set you back between $80 and $300, according to improvenet.

To replace your range in 15 years, you will need to set aside about $11 per month. Your refrigerator replacement in 13 years will see you setting aside between $3.85 and $7.69 per month. To get a new dishwasher in nine years, put aside between $2.32 and $9.25 per month, and for a new microwave, set aside $0.75 to $2.80 per month. (See also: 7 Ways to Save Big on Appliances)

6. Basement appliances

According to Consumer Reports, you can expect to get 10 years out of your washer and dryer before you need to replace them. Your water heater will give you about eight to 12 years of service before needing replacement. Your furnace should last about 15 to 20 years, while your central air conditioner should give about 10 to 15 years of service, according to This Old House.

To replace each of these items, you can expect to spend an average of $275 to $1,000 for a new washing machine, and $200 to $800 for a new dryer, according to Kitchens.com. It costs $800 to $1,500 for a new water heater, and an average of $5,400 for a new central a/c unit, according to Home Advisor. And it costs between $2,250 to $3,800 for a new furnace, according to Angie's List.

To replace your washing machine in 10 years, you'll need to set aside between $2.29 and $8.35 per month. For your dryer, you'll set aside $1.67 to $6.67 per month. To replace your water heater in 12 years, you'll need to set aside between $5.55 and $10.41 per month. You can replace an air conditioner in 10 to 15 years if you set aside $30 to $45 per month. And for your furnace, plan on setting aside $9.38 to $21.11 per month.

Creating a replacement fund

No matter where your possessions are in their life cycle, you can start preparing for their replacement today by starting a replacement savings fund. Setting aside between $208 and $322 per month will have you ready to replace each of these items in time.

But even if there's no way you can set aside several hundred a month to replace items that are currently working just fine, remember that any amount of money you can set aside each month will help keep the inevitable from being an emergency. Knowing that your possessions have a finite lifespan can help you prepare for the day when they will need to be replaced.

Selling a house can be a nerve-wracking experience. Not only do you have to deal with the daily stress of having prospective buyers in your home, but you also have to handle the potential feelings of rejection when no offers for your house are forthcoming.

Sellers may only see the lifetime of happy memories they built in their home, but buyers are usually focused on the (potentially expensive) negatives that come with the house.

Here are some of the biggest issues buyers may hate about your home. Fixing these things can help prospective buyers see themselves living in your house instead of moving on to the next one.

1. Outdated decorating styles

Some interior design is clearly the product of its time. Harvest gold and avocado appliances indicate that your last kitchen update occurred during the Nixon administration. Mauve and teal walls, tiles, or carpets will make buyers think you are still addicted to Miami Vice. And faux-finished paint jobs, such as sponge-painting, rag-rolling, and stippling, are about as current as Beanie Babies and the Macarena.

There are two reasons why it's a mistake to leave up any outdated decorating when trying to sell your home. The first is that your buyers will see these style choices as something they need to undo. It will cost them money and time for updates, which will decrease their willingness to pay full price for your house.

In addition, if it's clear that you haven't done decorating work on your home in several decades, buyers may wonder if there is other home maintenance you have neglected in that time. Even if you've kept your house in tiptop shape but simply love the aesthetic of a specific decade, buyers might assume the other work in the house is just as outdated. 2. Wall-to-wall carpeting

Wall-to-wall carpeting used to be a touted feature of a home, but it has now become a definite negative for the majority of homebuyers. Even first-time homebuyers expect hardwood floors, and will be turned off if they find wall-to-wall carpeting.

There are a number of reasons why carpet has lost its hold as a positive feature. To start, carpet tends to hold onto stains and odors. Even if you have diligently cleaned your carpet to stay as fresh as the day it was installed, the expectation among buyers is that carpet will be dingy and stinky, even if it's not.

In addition, carpets can hold allergens in a way that hardwood floors do not. Any homebuyers with severe allergies will see wall-to-wall carpeting as a perpetual sneeze machine until the carpet is removed and the floor underneath thoroughly cleaned.

This is why many sellers go ahead and pull up any carpeting before putting the house on the market. For many buyers, even unfinished hardwood floors are more desirable than wall-to-wall carpeting. If you are unable to remove the carpeting in your home, make sure you commit to getting it thoroughly and professionally cleaned before putting it on the market. 3. Unattractive yard

There's something to the idea of "curb appeal." You may have the world's most gorgeous home on the inside, but if the yard is weedy, overgrown, bare in patches, or looks like the exterior of Sanford and Son, then your potential buyers will never get out of the car to see it.

It pays to spend some time and money to improve your landscaping before you put the house on the market. That means ensuring healthy plants and trees and green grass (or other ground cover, if your yard refuses to grow grass) — and removing any rusting RVs that may have set up camp on your front lawn. 4. Wallpaper

The popularity of wallpaper seems to ebb and flow, but each time around it comes with a different aesthetic. Wallpaper is coming back in style right now, but the styles are different from what came before.

Whether you have the cabbage rose wallpaper of the early 20th century, orange and brown plaid from the 1970s, or the dainty florals and paisleys of the 1990s, it's likely that buyers will want to remove the wallpaper in your home, even if it's just to put up new paper themselves. Remove the paper yourself so buyers won't see your papered walls as a potential cost.

5. Odors

If you are a pet-owner or a smoker, you may have lost the ability to smell the scents that your pets or your habits have left behind. But your potential buyers will definitely notice the lingering scent of Rover's accidents, Fifi's litter box, and your ashtray — even if you do not.

Invest in a deep-clean of your home before putting it on the market — and then ask a non pet-owning and/or nonsmoking friend to sniff around your house afterward. They can let you know if the cleaning has taken care of the issue, or if you need to replace carpets, draperies, or other items that may have become irrevocably odoriferous.

6. Popcorn ceilings

Many homes built between the 1930s and the 1990s have this once-popular type of ceiling finish. Builders and DIY home improvers liked this type of finish because it covered up imperfections in ceiling plaster or drywall.

But popcorn ceilings are a major pain in the neck to paint, and they also collect dust in all of their peaks and valleys. In addition, popcorn ceilings that were installed before the late 1980s may contain asbestos, which requires special equipment to remove safely. Even if your home was built after that period, many people assume that a popcorn ceiling has asbestos.

Though removing a popcorn ceiling can help to attract buyers, it's important to test your ceiling for asbestos before making plans to remove it. You can purchase a testing kit to help you figure out if removing the popcorn ceiling is something you can do on your own, or if you will need to call in a team equipped to handle asbestos removal. Help buyers fall in love with your house

Don't let these kinds of minor features or problems keep buyers from seeing all the beauty and potential of your house. Here's how to fill your new home on a budget.

1. Prioritize your list

There's no need to furnish your entire home within a few months of moving in. Likely, there will be rooms that are of higher importance to set up. Take time to go through and rank the urgency of everything you think you need. For instance, it might be necessary to purchase a new appliance before you purchase a guest bed.

2. Bargain shop

3. Consider hand-me-downs

Chances are, you have family and friends with a lot of extra stuff lying around, and who would love to give it to you. While you may feel obligated to accept their generous gesture and take all that they have available, it's a good idea to proceed carefully. Only say yes to things you actually like. Otherwise, you risk having a mishmash of decor in your home, some of which may not be useful, and it'll be an added source of stress trying to figure out what to do with it.

4. Ask for a cash discount

Big ticket items such as couches and mattresses are likely to get more use than anything else in your home. Since you'll spend so much time on them, it makes sense to purchase a high quality, new item that's built to last. The last thing you want to do is to buy a cheap couch that is uncomfortable or will start falling apart after a year or two.

If you choose to buy new, keep in mind that most stores will allow a little room for negotiation, especially if you show up with cash in hand. Stores love when you pay in cash, because they don't have to go through the process of financing and they're guaranteed to get their money today. Plus, using cash works for you as the buyer because it prevents overspending when you walk in the store. You can sleep even better knowing that your brand-new mattress is paid in full.

5. Do it yourself

Are you a crafty person? If you enjoy making homemade items, then your house is the perfect place to showcase your creative works.

Whether you choose to paint pictures to hang on the wall, build furniture from wood scraps, or sew blankets and drapes, all of these are fantastic options that will save you money. DIY air plants

I recently visited a nursery where air plants in seashells were being sold for $13 a pop — an outrageous price point if you're familiar with what each of those items cost separately. Air plants alone retail for less than $4 on Amazon, and seashells are free if you pick them up on a relaxing walk along the shore. Air plants don't require soil to grow, but they still need water, sunlight, and TLC. You can buy a pack of them and give them all the care they need for under $10. Reuse food and decorative jars as planters

Instead of tossing my used candle jars in the trash or recycling bins, I clean out the leftover wax residue by setting the jars in boiling water for about a minute and then wiping out the excess before hitting it with soap and warm water. The more decorative candle jars make excellent planters.

You also can use old food jars as planters, and I highly recommend the new Oui by Yoplait yogurt jars as mini planters. I love these small jars because they don't have lids but rather foil coverings, which eliminates the need for grooves at the top of the jar. In my opinion, they don't look as cheap as regular jars when used as planters.

Also, be advised that some plants don't like to sit in too much water, so keep that in mind if your planters don't have holes on the bottom to provide drainage.

Repurpose deep dishes and wooden boxes

Before you send your old dishes and wooden boxes to the trash or local donation center, look at them as potential planters. For instance, I have a couple deep, high-sided modern dishes from CB2 that I've chipped and don't want to use for entertaining anymore, so I turned them into planters. I keep the chipped edge to the back so no one can see it. They look great on coffee tables and mantles.

Take a walk through the woods

Mother Nature provides us access to all her bounty, and there's no reason you can't take advantage of this by collecting seeds or identifying plant species from unrestricted wooded areas that will survive in your indoor or outdoor gardens. Dig 'em up and replant them at home — sparingly, of course. You can easily research types of plants with the help of apps or nature books.

No trespassing on private land, and don't even think about taking cuttings from protected areas, like state and national parks. That's a big no-no with even bigger fines if you get caught.

Snip from your parents' or grandparents' plants

My grandmother had this spider plant the whole family would snip from to propagate spider plant babies of their own. You can use this method to start new plants from a variety of species, as detailed by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. (See also: 13 Simple Gardening Skills Anybody Can Master)

Check Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and Letgo

While you're out there trying to save money on plants to spruce up your joint, others are tossing theirs out.

"Looking on sites such as Craigslist and in the 'free' section local Facebook groups can sometimes land you a gorgeous house plant that could need a little love," says Vicky Popat, owner of PlantOGram.com, which delivers fully grown plants, like Cotton Candy Mango trees. "If you live in a city, sometimes you could even spot a potted, ready-to-go plant just sitting on the curb. Before bringing any of these plants home, ask or check for pests."

Shop the clearance sections

Like everything else, plants go on sale, too. Poke around your local nursery or even your local big-box hardware store to see what kinds of deals they have. Don't be afraid to ask an associate either; they may know where the discounted goods are hidden if you can't find them. If available options aren't the most beautiful of the bunch, consider if you can clean them up, or if replanting in a more decorative planter will help. Many times you can just trim off the dead parts, wipe the dirty leaves with a washcloth, and feed with plant food until the plant is happy again.

Plant herbs

Herb seeds are cheap, but full-grown herb plants (often available at your supermarket) are quite affordable, too — in the $3 to $7 range. These plants will give your space, either indoors or out, the green punch you're looking for. 10 Things to Know Before You Start a Home Improvement Project

When done properly, home improvement projects can add resale value to your home. In fact, Angie’s List estimates the return on investment for kitchen and bath renovations to be as high as 85 percent. (See also: 9 Easy Home Improvements That Add Thousands to Your Listing)

On the other hand, these projects can bust your budget if you fail to map out supply costs and get multiple quotes from contractors. Get the job done right the first time so you can cash in big later with these 10 tips for starting a home improvement project.

1. Before contracting anyone, consider the value added

No matter what project you plan to start around the house — from the bathroom to the backyard — it’s important to ask two all-important questions: How much will this cost you, and how much value will this add to your home? For those answers, you’ll need to talk to a couple people, mainly a contractor for the former and a realtor for the latter. If your project bumps up your home’s value significantly, it’s probably not a bad idea to dive in, especially if what you plan to upgrade is long overdue. If you’ll only see a small return on investment, however, consider the consequences. There’s nothing wrong with pursuing a vanity project if it’ll make you happy in the long run, but you need to reconcile that with yourself and your wallet before you make any costly decisions. 2. You will most likely be inconvenienced

If you’re planning a major renovation, you’ll likely be inconvenienced by not being able to use those rooms while the project is ongoing, and that’s something you need to think about before starting. Consider not only how you’ll manage without these facilities, but also the time of year and how uncomfortable you may be during construction. 3. Not all contractors are created equal

You won’t have trouble finding a contractor to bid out your work, but finding the right contractor will take some time.

“In the planning stages, interview multiple contractors,” says Kylee Della Volpe, an editor for Mortgages.com. “Ask them about their costs, communication style, and to provide references. This will help you choose a professional who can help keep the project running smoothly for you.”

It’s not a bad idea to ask your friends and family for recommendations, as well. Before I blindly search online for a contractor, I always consult those in my network whom I trust. Look at past results, too. Ask the contractor for photos and/or videos of recent projects. Those who know what they’re doing and run a solid business will have no problem showing you what they’re capable of. Experience counts here.

The Better Business Bureau also advises that homeowners find out if a contractor is a member of a professional association, which has standards or a code of ethics.

“All BBB Accredited Businesses have agreed to uphold BBB standards for ethics in the marketplace,” says Lisa Schiller, director of investigations and media relations for BBB serving Wisconsin. “Homeowners also should check with BBB to learn how long a contractor has been in business and if the firm has been responsive to any complaints filed with BBB. In addition, BBB reports can tell you how long the company has been in business, show complaint detail, and show posted reviews — positive, negative, and neutral — as well as any known government action.” (See also: How to Find and Hire a Reliable Contractor)

4. Original blueprints of your house will move the process along faster

If you have the original blueprints of your home, plus any plans that include home improvements and additions over the years, offer them to the contractor. You’ll save time and possibly money if he or she doesn’t have to start from scratch.

5. Make sure there’s a contract that covers the scope of work

Before starting any kind of work that’s going to impact your finances, you should have a contract in place. If the contractor is unwilling to provide one or acts shifty when it’s suggested, you should absolutely consider this a red flag. Do not work with anyone who doesn’t want to draw up a contract for your plans.

The contract should include the company's name, address, and phone number, and have start and completion dates, plus estimated cost written into it.

However, if you sign the contract away from the place of business, the Right of Rescission applies — which says you have three legal business days to cancel. If you enact this right, be sure to put the rescission in writing, mail it so that it’s postmarked by the third business day, and make a copy for yourself. Also, keep a copy of the contract and the warranty for your records, as well.

6. Permits will most likely be required for major work

You may need permits for your work. The contractor should provide the costs for all permits in your estimate, and usually the contractor is responsible for pulling the permits from local offices unless you agree otherwise. Home improvements that may require permits include new windows, fences; structural changes, like building a deck; and plumbing and electrical work. Your city council office will have information for improvements and projects that require permits.

7. Get an itemized estimate to help you plan your budget

When a contractor bids out your work, ask for itemized billing opposed to a lump sum fee for the scope of work. The latter doesn't provide you with a transparent view of where you’re money is going, but that’s information you need to know in order to choose the right person for the job, or if the job is even worth it. “Before you start a project, you should be sure to get estimates on everything, including the permits and any money you spend if you can't use parts of your house, like the kitchen or bedrooms, then do some research to see how much that particular improvement adds to the value of the home,” Della Volpe says. “If it adds more value than it costs, go for it. If it doesn't, it's time to evaluate how much you'll lose in the process and whether that amount is worth it to you in terms of comfort in your home.”

8. Never pay in full or up front

You should solicit at least three bids from prospective contractors based on the exact same specs of the full project, including materials, labor, and time needed to complete.

“Homeowners need to discuss bids in detail with each contractor, making certain they understand the reasons for any variations in the prices and not automatically making a decision based on lowest price,” Schiller says. “Cost differences may include issues such as material quality, craftsmanship, and subcontracting for specialized labor.”

Never pay in full or up front. Any contractor who requires this is most likely scamming you. Only pay the balance once the work is completed and to your satisfaction. One-third down payment should be sufficient to start — if you must put anything down. Then pay one-third when the project is underway, and the balance upon completion. Don't pay in cash, either; BBB suggests paying with a credit card whenever possible.

9. Your contractors must be insured

God forbid something happens to one of your contractors on the job and you’re held liable or just plain S.O.L. You don’t want that headache, which is why their company should be bonded and insured against worker’s comp claims, property damage, and personal liability in case of accidents. Don’t just take the contractor’s word for it, either. Ask for proof or call to verify insurance coverage by asking for the name of the agency and carrier.

10. Don’t bite off more than you can chew if you’re DIYing

If you think you’re handy enough to handle a home improvement project yourself, more power to you. Just be realistic in your capabilities and what you can handle given the scope of work. You don’t want to bite off more than you can chew, which in the long run will not only inconvenience you, but could end up being costlier than if you’d have hired a contractor from the beginning. Yes, the Wüsthofs and Shuns of the world may be the ultimate standard, but the truly savvy adult knows that top quality can be had from slightly less pricey brands, such as Victorinox, or less-expensive lines from the top brands, such as the Wüsthof Pro line. 2. Blackout curtains

Sure, when you were in your college days, any old thing that could keep the light out when you were sleeping off last night's … study session … was fine. A sheet tacked up over the window was plenty for your needs. But now that you're a bill-paying adult, it's time to get some nicer window dressings.

You can pay a pretty penny for quality blackout curtains, but you can get some surprisingly luxurious and grownup looking ones from places like Target, World Market, IKEA, and Amazon. And instead of paying through the nose for custom lined curtains, clip some blackout lining to the back using curtain clips and rings. After all, you need your beauty sleep for all the adulting you'll be doing early in the morning.

3. A table centerpiece

Nothing says you've made it to adulthood like a centerpiece for your table. A nice vase, or a tray with some candles on it tells the world that you've settled into your home.

The cheapest place to get vases and knick-knacks is the thrift store, where you can find an abundance of pitchers, vases, baskets, and trays for a couple bucks each.

4. Framed prints

Throw away those music festival posters, or at least frame them so they look like art. Framed prints make a home look so much more put together.

And if you want to go with custom framing, you should know it's a bit of a splurge. If you must custom frame something, make use of coupons at craft stores or promo codes for online custom framing retailers like Framebridge. Cheaper alternatives include shopping for already-framed art at discount stores like TJMaxx, or framing your own art with ready-made frames — IKEA has some lovely inexpensive options.

5. Houseplants

It takes some real adult skill to keep a houseplant alive. I should know, I've killed plenty. That's why I now invest in succulents and air plants.

6. Supportive pillows

You know you're getting older when you buy a pillow specifically for its neck or back support. The most important thing about a pillow is that it holds your head in a neutral position. Side sleepers need a thicker, firmer pillow (such as memory foam pillows), whereas back sleepers need a pillow that supports their head without disrupting the natural curve of the neck.

It can be hard to find the perfect pillow for you, and I honestly think this is one purchase that is worth the investment. Look for pillows that have a money-back guarantee so you can try it out risk-free, as it takes a few nights to determine if a pillow is a good fit.

7. Multiple sources of lighting

A ceiling light can do the job of illuminating a room, but decorators agree that multiple sources of lighting are more soothing and pleasing to the eye. One upgrade that can make your home feel much cozier is buying a few floor and table lamps to diversify your lighting.

Discount stores like TJMaxx are great for finding affordable lighting. If you'd like to save a little more, you can also look at architectural salvage stores like the Habitat for Humanity Restore, or thrift shops.

8. A proper filing system

It might seem boring, but it's so essential to keep track of bills, medical records, receipts, tax returns, and other important documents. After a while, throwing them all in a drawer (or piling them on the dining table) and hoping they'll sort themselves out just doesn't cut it anymore.

9. Guest-friendly bathroom amenities

When your friends come over, is there enough toilet paper? How about a place to dry their hands that isn't the bath towel you used this morning? Put a little thought into what guests might need if they use your bathroom.

You don't need much, just a few hand towels, a soap dispenser, and a toilet paper holder. There are endless budget-friendly options at home decor or major department stores. Make sure you tuck your toiletries out of sight and bam! You've got a grownup bathroom.

10. Matching dishes

Having matching dishes on the table is definitely a step towards being an adult. White dishes are always practical and can always be accessorized with other colors.

You can dish out a lot for matching dinnerware at department stores, but go to Amazon, IKEA, or Target and you can get a serviceable set of matching plates and bowls for a super affordable price. A set of eight will usually be enough for dinner parties and guests.

11. A slow cooker

Whether it's a basic slow-cooker, or one of the uber-popular electric pressure cookers, having an appliance that cooks your dinner for you while you do other stuff is one of the marks of a busy adult.

For the cult-favorite Instant Pot or other appliances, put a price alert on the Amazon listing using Camel Camel Camel so you'll be notified when they have their periodic sales, which are the cheapest way to get one of these appliances (unless you lucked out by finding a brand-new Instant Pot at the thrift store, like I did).

The colors are chosen based on ruling planets, sun signs, and other important dates and numbers. While there is quite a bit of science and success backing the new colorful trend, a lot of it is psychological.

As an example, Bernhardt told Goop that if you're looking for help with your relationship, "You might go to October's color, which is a light blue that is very peaceful and gentle; it helps bring harmony and balance. Or February — a high vibration purple — is a great color for people who are intense, and trying to learn how to be more detached and collaborative. Lilac and lavender can help us love without being too clingy."

How to use the colors

Incorporating these colors into your décor can help bring about positive energy. For instance, you can add a splash of color to any room by painting the trims or one accent wall with a shade in your birthday month color. You can also move certain items into different rooms so they are more color-coordinated, based on the shades you select.

Along with using these colors throughout your décor, you can also wear these power colors throughout your clothing, accessories, or makeup each day to capitalize on the positive vibes. Mindful color selection like this might require some time to get organized, but it should cost you very little money to execute.

Minimalism

2. Choose the right carpet

If you do decide on carpeting, look for a synthetic blend option with low pile that won’t absorb as much hair and is easier to vacuum. Also consider modular carpet tile or inexpensive rugs that can be easily picked up and cleaned or replaced.

3. Select washable fabrics and concealing patterns

Choose washable fabrics for cushion and pillow cases whenever possible so you can easily throw them in the washing machine. Fabrics with patterns can help camouflage old stains. Avoid tweed fabrics that can trap hair between the fibers.

Look for items in colors that match your pet's fur. For instance, you wouldn't want to purchase a black couch if you have a white cat; the stray pet hair would be abundantly obvious.

9 Surprising Uses for Empty Beer and Soda Cans

If you enjoy a can or two of beer or soda, you may want to think twice before throwing your empties into the trash or recycling bin. The humble aluminum can has a multitude of uses, and can save you money on the most surprising things. All it takes is a little imagination, and a few basic tools. 1. Make Friendship Bracelets

An empty can has a great shape to turn into a bracelet that easily fits on a wrist. Of course, you'll have to do a little work to make it safe to wear, but the results can be stunning. Simply use a box cutter or pair of kitchen shears to cut off the top and bottom of the can, and then cut it into segments that work for you. You may want a very wide bracelet, or a bunch of smaller widths. About an inch is good for starters though. Make sure there are no sharp edges, and then decorate it by wrapping ribbon or cloth around it. If you have someone with a particularly large wrist, you can cut it, but make sure you wrap those edges carefully, or round them off. If the can already has a really great design, you don't need to wrap it at all!

2. Make a Beer Can Stove

If you do a lot of camping, or like cooking in the outdoors, you don't have to buy a portable stove. You can make one out of an empty beer or soda can, and it works incredibly well. All you need is something to cut the can with, and some fuel (rubbing alcohol works beautifully). The best part is, if you leave it behind, or it gets thrown in the trash, it costs nothing to replace.

3. Organize Your Stuff

Pens. Pencils. Screws. Hair Ties. Batteries. Cutlery. There are hundreds of different items at home that can be organized inside empty cans. You just have to cut the top off the can at the height that works best for you. If you have a junk drawer, cut them just below that height, and you can quickly organize all those little bits and pieces that clutter it up. For the garage or workshop, you can make them different sizes for different items. You could even screw them to the wall.

4. Create a Beer or Soda Can Lantern

Creating a lantern out of a beverage can takes a little skill and dexterity, but if you can follow a pattern, and work with a few basic household tools, you shouldn't have any problems. Simply cut an oval in your can, and spray paint it any color you want. Then, create a stencil of your favorite subject matter, and use it to cut a sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Put the two together, add a light, and you have something very fun and decorative. You could even use these at Halloween in place of pumpkins… and they don't wither and die.

5. Make Your Own Jewelry

If you have the time and the patience, beer can jewelry can really set those tongues wagging. It will be unique, unusual, and not available in any stores. Some people simply cut out parts of the empty can's design into interesting shapes, like teardrops or ovals. Others go the extra step, adding imitation gemstones, glitters, and other adornments. Take some inspiration from these earrings selling on Etsy (yeah… you could make money!).

6. Plant Seeds and Cuttings

An empty beer or soda can is a great vessel for starting your garden's plants, flowers, and herbs. All you need to do is remove the top of the can with a can opener to give it a clean, safe edge. Then, spray it your favorite color. Add soil, seeds or cuttings, and a little water, and you can save serious money on planters you would buy at a home improvement store or garden center.

7. Boost Your Wi-Fi Signal

Do you have a poor Wi-Fi signal in your home? You could fork out a lot of cash on a signal booster, or a Wi-Fi router upgrade. Or, you could take one of your empty cans and make a booster that will take you from two bars to four. It should take you less than 10 minutes from start to finish. Just make sure all the edges are safe, especially if you have kids in the house.

8. Make Some Impressive Chainmail

If you are into historical re-enactments, attending Renaissance Fairs, or want to make some extra cash on the side, you can use the pull-tabs from your beer and soda cans to create chain mail. Not only does it look really authentic, it can be done with just the pull-tabs and a few simple tools. If chain mail isn't your thing, you can use the same techniques to make lampshades, belts, bowls, and several other creative ideas.

9. Create Unique Gifts for Friends and Family

The material used to make a beverage can is not as thick as it used to be. While this means you don't get a lot for the scrap, it means you can do some very cool things using tools you will find around the house. The material is so soft that you could actually draw into it with an empty ballpoint pen, and punch through it with a nail and create some beautiful personalized punch designs Just make sure you clean out the can thoroughly, and find something suitable on which to mount your finished piece of art.

9 No-Fuss Plants That Will Brighten Your Home Until Spring

This time of year, it's nice to bring something green home to help pass the gray days. Houseplants are a living reminder that spring is on the horizon. You don't need to be particularly good at keeping stuff thriving to enjoy them, either. Here's a list of some low-maintenance plants that are cheap or, in some cases, free! 1. Pothos

You can pick up a gorgeously green, 10-ounce pothos plant for less than $4 at Lowe's. If you're worried about it being high maintenance, don't fret. Chances are, you'll have this plant for the long haul. Even people who have green thumbs explain that this plant will withstand a hearty dose of "benign neglect."

And if your friend just happens to have this plant, you may be able to get one for yourself for free. Simply cut an existing plant into some individual segments above the leaf by about half an inch. Take 10 or so of these cuttings and place them in a pot (don't forget to water them) for about six weeks. Each cut should eventually make a vine that will turn into a full plant.

2. Spider Plant

The only plant I have ever had in my own home is the spider plant. And amazingly, it has withstood the test of time and countless messes along the way. Talk about indestructible. What about cheap? Yeah, it's that, too. This plant produces seemingly unlimited babies that you can either inherit or pass along to your friends with virtually no work involved on your part.

Here's a tip: spider plants can sometimes get a "burned" look on their leaf tips. This is as a result of too much fluoride accumulation. If you want to avoid this tattered look, try using higher grade fertilizer and skipping tap water when watering. It's a great excuse to try your hand at making a rain collection barrel.

3. Aloe Plant

Want a plant that does more than just look pretty on your shelf? Grow aloe! You can use its gooey center to ease irritation from cuts and burns. A 10-inch aloe vera plant costs only $4. Care is easy. Water well and then let the soil dry one or two inches before the next watering.

Another option is tiger alloe. It is one of the smaller plants in the aloe family and only reaches about 10 inches tall. As a result, it fits well on coffee tables or other areas in compact apartments. Oh, and it gets some spikes with orange flowers in the middle of winter to help shake the cold-weather blues and add a burst of color into your life.

4. Jade Plant

Jade plants can last 100 years or more with proper care. It is a slow-growing succulent, so it doesn't need to take up a lot of space and can survive even if you forget to water it regularly. You can grab a jade of your very own for around $4 or $5.

If your jade picks up mealybugs — a white, cottony mass — you can treat it with some rubbing alcohol.

5. Cactus

My neighbor bought a tiny Christmas cactus plant for around $5 a few years ago. It now sits proudly in her bay window and blooms late each fall with some really pretty flowers. You'll want to place this plant in a well-lit area and place it in a well-drained pot. You only need to move it to a new pot every year or so. In the summer, you can move it to your patio — just make sure to give it some shade during the hottest time of day.

This plant is often called a crab cactus in Europe. And in its native Brazil, the "Christmas" part of the name would be relatively meaningless, as its blooms in spring there (because it's in the Southern Hemisphere).

6. Mother-in-Law's Tongue

While a mother-in-law's tongue (otherwise known as a snake plant) may sound like something you'd want to stay away from, this plant is excellent for indoor air quality. It filters anything from formaldehyde to trichloroethylene to benzene out of your home's atmosphere. It's relatively cheap to boot. You can pick one up for around $15 at your local big box center. Experts recommend you place this plant in your bedroom because — get this — it can convert exhaled CO2 into oxygen.

The best part? This plant is super hard to kill. They don't need much light either. Just some love, and little water, and an occasional dusting.

7. Cast Iron Plant

Don't have a lot of light in your home? The cast iron plant doesn't care. The shadier, the better for this happy plant. Actually, if it gets too much sun, its leathery leaves will start to burn. Otherwise, it's hearty and easy to maintain. A small cast iron will set you back around $12.

If your plant's leaves do end up burning, you can simply cut them off, water well, and place it in a spot with better shade away from windows.

8. Rubber Plant

As one of the world's oldest house plants, the rubber plant can grow quite tall and take up a bit of space in only a few years' time. But that's good if you want a houseplant as a feature of your home decor. It's also resistant to pests and diseases and can tolerate poor treatment. You can get a rubber plant for around $8 plus shipping costs. Not bad considering how big it will get.

My mother-in-law keeps these plants, and she explains that if the leaves turn yellow, it's typically that they're receiving too much water. Back off for a while, and their usual color should return.

9. Peace Lily

Another easy-to-grow houseplant is the peace lily. It's quite common in houses across the U.S. and beyond, so you may be able to score one from a friend. Otherwise, you can buy this plant for around $8. Its pleasant white flowers prefer shade versus sun. Most peace lily plants grow to about 16 inches tall and bloom throughout the year. No blooms? Move your plant to a darker room.

19 Fun, Cheap Projects to Try This Weekend

By Wednesday, we're grateful to be over the weekday hump. On Thursday, we can sense the impending joy of Casual Friday. And then, it finally arrives: the weekend! Two blissful days free from work. Sure, there are some chores and errands to be done — but what about "me" time, or "we" time? Here are 19 fun, cheap weekend project ideas.

1. Create a Pallet Headboard

Wooden pallets have become incredibly popular for building all kinds of stuff. My personal favorite is the pallet headboard, which really shows off the rustic look of the pallet wood. This The Thinking Closet has excellent instructions for selecting, building, and even lighting your headboard.

2. Anything Involving Washi Tape

Have you seen this stuff? Basically, it's a Japanese decorative masking tape, although maybe it's a little sturdier. Washi tape decorating and project possibilities are pretty much endless: Decorate the keys of your computer keyboard, cover the outside of your notebooks, use it to beautify the inside and outside of your lampshades, make your own gift wrap, label your power cords, make your own cute coasters, etc. I am currently obsessed with covering clean, empty tuna cans and making cute containers for paper clips, and loose change.

3. Start Your Own Podcast

Have something to share or teach? Why not make your own podcasts? Apple makes it easy to get started with their app, and here is a great tutorial for making it your own. It's time to share your wisdom with the world.

4. Make Mosaic Tiles

Have old dishes around that you hate to part with? How about bits of jewelry? If you want to "upcycle" them, consider making mosaic tiles for your garden. First, learn to smash plates properly. Then, watch this video to learn more about what materials work well. Finally, this lady will show you how to make the stepping/paving stone. My husband and daughter made two and they are a great addition to the garden.

5. Whip Up Some Wine Jelly

You needn't be an experienced canner to make wine jelly. It is very simple and can easily be made in an afternoon. If you don't eat it all yourself, it makes a great hostess gift.

6. Make Energy Bars

Like a snack with your mid-morning coffee? Whip up a batch of these energy bars and you will be set for the week. Hint: Wrap them individually in waxed paper and twist the ends. They will stay crispy and chewy.

7. Learn Meditation

I had one heck of a time learning how to meditate (I usually just fell asleep), until I took a meditation class. There are many other classes available online, too. It will help with your stress levels and it may also help you learn to focus. I find that I feel refreshed afterward, but not groggy like after a nap.

8. Make Lip Balm

Make sure to round up the ingredients for this project during the week so that on the weekend, you can focus on actually making the lip balm. You'll need tubes, labels, the ingredients, and these handy instructions. Any you don't use can be given as gifts.

9. Learn to Crochet

I have given up on knitting — it's just not in the cards for me. But as it turns out, crochet is very easy to learn and you can actually make a scarf in one weekend. Here's a video to get you started with single crochet, and once you've mastered that, move on to double crochet for the scarf.

10. Build a Terrarium

If you have a desk job, a terrarium is a good way to bring some nature and tranquility inside. They are an inexpensive craft, especially if you find your container at a second-hand store or use something you have around the house. Since you will probably end up buying bags of pebbles, charcoal, and moss, make several terrariums and ask with your kids or friends to help. Here are some easy instructions and a list of materials you will need. This video shows an easy way to build terrariums using paper plates. Chopsticks are also helpful for moving things around.

11. Knot Up Some Macrame Plant Holders

These aren't your mom's tacky yarn plant holders. These macrame plant holders use jute string, and are really rustic and beautiful. They are also incredibly inexpensive.

12. Bake Bread

Even if you own a breadmaker, there is just something about the process of mixing, kneading, and baking your own bread that gives you such a feeling of accomplishment. Taking a bite of warm, fresh-from-the-oven bread with butter is a great incentive. I like this recipe for whole-wheat bread because it is very uncomplicated and makes three loaves. And there's no need to be flummoxed by the kneading process — here is a video showing how easy it is.

13. Make a Lamp

Real talk: I have some weird items kicking around that I probably should have tossed, but I want to make lamps out of them. And as DIY Debbie explains in this video, you can make a lamp out of just about anything.

14. Try a Rag Rug

Have any old sheets around? If not, don't despair. You can buy them at a thrift store and make one of these neat rugs.

15. Construct a Fire Pit

One of our favorite things to do on a starry night is to have a fire in the backyard. It's relaxing for two or for a group. As a precaution, check first with local authorities to make sure you can have a fire pit in your yard. (We are allowed to under the classification of "cooking fires.") You also need to make sure that your pit is located away from other structures. Here are some step-by-step instructions from Lowe's, using pavers.

16. Create Homemade Fruit Liqueurs

Oh, these homemade fruit liqueurs are fun. Right now we have cherry, strawberry, peach and apple. After extensive taste-testing (don't judge), we found that we preferred using vodka over the brandy, and vanilla bean over cinnamon. If you want to give them as gifts, pour them into cute mason jars.

17. Make Your Own Soap

I am afraid to work with lye, so I was pretty excited to find that there are no-lye soap recipes out there! This one looks easy and I like her suggestions for additions to the soap, such as lavender and peppermint.

18. Build a Garden Path

A meandering path around your yard adds charm and can also be very practical. These instructions are extremely helpful. While it points out that mulch is the cheapest material, it does break down over time. So prepare to do a lot of shoveling! The results are really nice, though, and assuming your path isn't too long, it can be accomplished in a weekend.

19. Learn a New Language

Of course, you can't learn a whole language in a weekend, but you can learn some of the basics. There are many resources online to help you. I am proud to say I can now ask where the bathroom is and order a Croque Monsieur in French.

Some of these projects will require some pre-planning and purchasing of materials beforehand, so make your selection and start planning before the weekend arrives.

Similar to other large box stores, there are ways to maximize your savings and time at IKEA. Here are eight such hacks that'll help you walk out the doors with a great deal on your next visit.

1. Make Your Shopping List Online

A great way to make your next trek to IKEA a faster, and more pleasant experience, is to first create your shopping list online at IKEA.com. Just add items to your virtual "Shopping List" and print it out. The reason this is such a great idea is because your list will tell you the exact location of each item in the physical warehouse, right down to the aisle and bin number. You'll end up savings oodles of time as you can head directly to your items without wandering the cavernous warehouse.

2. Always Enter Directly Through the Exit

With your shopping list in hand, enter through the exit. By doing so, you'll end up in the actual warehouse where you can quickly find the aisles and bins of the items on your list, and you'll skip the shiny showroom and all those temptations.

3. Use Lowe's Kitchen Design Service Before Going to IKEA

A kitchen facelift, or full remodel, is easily one of the more expensive home improvement projects you can undertake. A great way to save money on a kitchen remodel is to take advantage of Lowe's free kitchen design service and then use those plans when purchasing cabinets from IKEA. By doing so, you'll get a free professional kitchen design, plus easily save 30%–40% at IKEA compared to buying custom cabinets from Lowe's, Home Depot, or a cabinet shop in your local area.

4. Shop the "As Is" Section on a Monday

An often overlooked section of any IKEA warehouse is the "As Is" department, which is typically hidden away near the cash registers. This is where they store their discontinued items, damaged products, and returns, and they always sell them for a hefty discount. Try to always shop the "As Is" section on a Monday morning, as most returns happen over the weekend.

8. Missing Parts? Don't Return to IKEA

If you've ever attempted to put together a piece of IKEA furniture, you already know how many parts and hardware come in the box. Inevitably you'll run into a situation where you're missing a part or screw. The next time this happens to you, don't get in the car and drive all the way back to the warehouse as you'll do nothing but add to your frustration.

Instead, examine your instruction manual and determine the exact part number you're missing. Then, call your local IKEA and they'll happily mail you your replacement parts. When calling, bypass the operator immediately by asking for the specific department your item is stocked in. Those are the only employees who can quickly get your parts in the mail.

10 Smart Household Uses for Rope

Thick or thin, long or short, nylon or sisal, there are a seemingly endless number of rope varieties available to you these days. Although we all know the most common uses of rope, particularly in sailing, trucking, and other industrial applications, there are some wonderful ways to use rope around the home. Here are 10 of my favorites.

1. The Rope Tire Ottoman

There are several variations of this one floating around on the Internet, and I myself opted for the small side-table version for my bedroom. But depending on the tire, the type of rope, and the other materials involved, this could be good for any room in the house. If you find a really big tire, it could even work as a big table for the man cave.

You can read the complete instructions here, but the basic steps are very simple. Take an old tire (or a new one if you're feeling flush), and wrap a long length of rope around and around the tire until it is completely covered. Apply hot glue as you're winding. Then top with the material and finish of your choice. Very easy, super-stylish, and a fun craft project. (See also: 12 Smart Uses for Safety Pins)

2. Rope Shelving

A rope shelf can be as simple as two lengths of rope holding a shelf to the wall, like this example here. I like this because it literally takes about 30 minutes of your time, from cutting the holes to hanging the finished shelf. If you're feeling more adventurous, add several shelves and hang them from something simple, like an old pipe of pipe. This version is over $300 at Restoration Hardware. You can do the same yourself for less than $50, and all you need to do is learn how to tie the hangman's knot (which you can do right here). Go for it, and make a stunning set of shelves quickly, and easily.

3. Rope Rugs

With a length of rope, some glue, and a little patience, you can create a study rug for your entrance in no time at all. This Instructables project will show you the most simple rope rug to create, and it really is easy as pie. If you are feeling like you could go beyond that simple spiral design, try this one over at SuperTopo. It's a real tied rope rug, and requires no glue or cardboard. However, it does need an awful lot more skill and patience, as the author states it takes about two hours from start to finish. It also makes a fabulous gift.

4. A Floating Bed

Be warned — this is not for anyone dabbling in DIY. If you don't do this correctly, it could lead to some expensive repairs, and possibly some pretty nasty injuries. Having said that, do it right and it's a terrific way to raise the bed off the floor in a stunning and eye-catching way. The most important part to get right is securing the ropes from joists in the ceiling, and making sure the knots tied on each end are very secure. This video gives you a great insight into the process.

5. A Thick Rope Handrail

Here's a great way to give your simple staircase some personality. All you need is a large length of thick rope, preferable in a material that is not too coarse, and some brackets. StairRopes has a lot of ideas and materials for this kind of project. You could buy directly from them, or use materials you have at home, or that you find in the local hardware stores. One of the things you will need to master is the "manrope knot," which is used to give the handrail a beautiful, ornamental finish. You can see it being tied right here. And by the way, the Manrope Knot is also a great door handle.

6. A Rope Wall

How do you create a room divider that gives someone a semi-private area in which to work, or relax, and at the same time keep the natural light flowing throughout the home? Well, one of the best ways I have ever seen is the rope room divider. The Brick House has detailed instructions, but all you really need to do is build a series of long wooden boxes to house the top and bottom of the walls, and a lot of rope. Then, drill holes in the boxes, evenly along the length, and thread ropes between them, tying a very simple knot at each end. The tricky part is getting the ropes to hang evenly spaced, and taut. But get it right, and it will definitely be a talking point.

7. A Refined Cat Scratching Post

As the owner of two cats, I have gone out of my way to find projects that can help me create cat furniture that is not an eyesore. I don't know about you, but the cat trees available at most pet stores are horribly over-priced, and just as gaudy. DreamALittleBigger was my first port of call. I used a piece of carpet that I actually liked, and 100 feet of sisal rope (never use synthetic for a cat). You can read the instructions here. Once you master a simple post, do a search for some more complicated trees that used sisal rope.

8. Rope Letters

When my second child was born, I bought wooden letters spelling out her name, painted them, and hung them in the nursery. These letters were quite expensive. But, had I known about rope letters, I could have achieved the same result on a much lower budget. All you need is a length of rope in the color and thickness of your choosing (jute is good), and some Elmer's glue and cornstarch. Lovegrowswild has a great tutorial for beginners. Give it a try. There is also a variation that uses hot glue and foam core.

9. A Rope Chair

If you were to see this particular chair in a trendy lawyer's office, you'd think, wow, that must have cost a fortune. And you'd be right. That one is very expensive, BUT you can make your own for almost nothing in comparison. With just 50 feet of ½" thick rope (any color), some plywood, threaded bars, and a few other bits and pieces, you can do it yourself and create something that is both comfortable, and stylish. 10. Rope Mirror Frames

If you have some of those standard frameless mirrors that come with the houses, you don't have to replace them with expensive ones from the store. You can create stunning frames using a variety of different ropes, with different colors and textures. I framed my half-bath oval mirror with black rope, gluing it to the edge with hot glue, and doing it three times to give it some definition. You can choose large untreated sisal rope, or small rope that is 15-20 layers deep, like this one. Martha Stewart also has a great tutorial for beginners.

11 Brilliant DIY Light Fixtures

Why are all lighting options so vanilla? Or ridiculously expensive?

Here's something you might not know: You can make your very own light fixtures. You don't even need much electrical knowledge. Learn how below.

1. Jar Chandelier

I'm one of those people who's obsessed with canning jars. So, I love this mason jar chandelier more than most projects I've seen. Make a ceiling plate from wood. Then, drill holes for wires. Punch holes in the tops of your jar lids. Attach everything together and bask in the warm glow.

2. Concrete Pendants

You can make a whole fleet of gorgeous concrete pendants with just one $6 bag of mix. You'll use recycled plastic bottles as your mold — one large and one small enough to fit inside the large one. After you've set your light, snake the cord through and hang using a cheap bracket from IKEA.

3. Basket Light

Hunt around at thrift and antique shops for neat old baskets. Then make this simple basket pendant by flipping it upside-down. Stick a light kit inside and you're done. If you're looking for a specific finish on your hardware, you can also use a cheap pendant as your base.

4. Can Pendants

Check out these beautiful can pendant lights! Buy a couple quart-sized tin cans at your local hardware store. Punch pretty designs in them with a hammer and nail. Then use a candlelight bulb kit to illuminate.

5. Industrial Track

Going for a more industrial look in your place? This plumbing pipe light is sure to please you. You'll need lots of threaded nipples (that's a thing), elbows, floor flanges, and tees. Take the handy shopping list with you to the store and ask for help if you need it. Then assemble the fixture, coat with rubbed bronze spray paint, and thread the electrical.

6. Orb Light

I'm sure you guys have seen those orb lights on designer websites. Here's a chance to save some cash and make your own. This tutorial calls for embroidery hoops — absolutely genius! You carefully connect them, then spray paint them whatever color you'd like. String the light through and enjoy.

7. Modern Pendant

Those of you who dig geometric patterns will go nuts for this $10 pendant light. You'll spray straws in gold paint and then string them in triangular patterns. Attach them to a basic pendant kit, and you have a smart new light.

8. Doily Lamp

Have a more feminine signature style? Try this doily lamp tutorial. Blow up a large balloon. Coat doilies in glue or wallpaper paste. Stick them onto the balloon, leaving a bit of space to later thread a light kit. Let everything dry before hanging.

9. Lampshade Light

Turn your traditional view of lampshades around with this DIY lampshade light. You'll take the frame of two lampshades and attach them together using copper wire. Spray paint the pendant any color of the rainbow. Then hang with a standard light kit.

10. Chicken Wire Pendant

If you're cultivating a farmhouse style, try making this chicken wire pendant. Again, you'll use some embroidery hoops as your frame. Then wrap in the chicken wire before painting. Stick your light kit through the top hoop and hang.

11. Cloud Light

By now, I think you've realized that if there's a hole in the top of something, you can make a light out of it. These fluffy (and temporary) cloud pendants are no exception to the rule — but they aren't plugged in. You need cotton batting, paper lanterns, LED candles, and a hot glue gun. Glue the batting to the lantern and place the candles inside. Then hang using fishing line. What a fun idea for a little accent glow.

13 Festive Ways to Dress Up Your Property for the Holidays

Want to give your home a seasonal touch this fall and winter? Take a look at these festive ways to enhance your home's curb appeal for the late-year holidays.

1. Adorn the Front Door With Holiday Wreaths

Wreaths are an easy way to dress up your front door in an inviting way. You can buy wreaths for nearly every holiday these days —I've personally seen examples for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas this week alone (yep, Christmas starts in September now) — or you can try your hand at making your own by visiting your local craft store for supplies. Often, the same craft stores host wreath-making classes this time of year, or you can search for them in your area on your local event boards, Craigslist, Meetup, or the NextDoor app.

2. Swap in a Seasons Greetings Doormat

Along with changing my door wreaths for the fall and winter holidays, I also swap out my door mats. I don't buy new ones every year, but rather use the same one from year to year by cleaning it before packing it away after the holiday has passed. You can find cool mats with fun greetings at store like Target for around $10 — totally a steal — but there are plenty of other places that will have different selections at different prices. Or you can do what I do and wait until after the holidays to snag your mats when they're, like, 75% off.

3. Power Wash Porches, Sidewalks, Windows, and Siding

You can instantly give your house a facelift with a little soap and water by power washing your porches, sidewalks, windows, and siding.

"Sometimes a home just needs a good exterior dusting, and the cheapest way to do that is by renting and using a power washer," says Alexander Ruggie, PR director for 911 Restoration, which specializes in water damage restoration.

I recently power-washed my home, and the difference is pretty astonishing. You don't really think about the accumulated dirt until you get all up in there, but I promise you'll be happy with the result once you've blasted away all that dirt, dust, and muck.

In addition to renting a power washer, you also can buy one. I found a great deal on Groupon a couple years ago, and I've definitely gotten my money's worth. Something to look into, at least.

4. Dress Up the Front Yard With Tasteful Decorations

The key word here is tasteful — because it's not really curb appeal if your home is surrounded by a bunch of tired, tacky decorations. That's not to say you shouldn't have fun decorating for the season, but, ya know, use your common sense when deciding what's appropriate for your yard and what isn't.

Zakiyya Rosebelle, lifestyle and interior decorator behind Sweet Little Luxuries, suggests keeping it classic. "Accent the front yard with outdoor art or a sculpture made from a natural material such as metal owls, a galvanized pumpkin, or a wooden reindeer," she says.

5. Tie Large Bows Around Gates, Posts, and Mailboxes

Another simple fix to give you property added flair is to tie large bows — which come premade or you can make them yourself — around fixtures in your yard, like gates, posts, mailboxes, and more. Personally, I think bows give homes and yard a tidy-but-festive touch that adds that little something extra.

6. Line Walkways With Seasonal Flowers and Plants

There are several varieties of plants and flowers that are popular in the fall, like mums, turtlehead, sunflowers, and stonecrop. You can find a great selection of these plants at your local farmers markets, flower shops, and big-box hardware stores, the latter of which probably offers the best deal, but not always guaranteed. Line your walkway with these perennials to add autumn color to your yard, or hang a few on your porch to dress up the immediate exterior of your home. After the season, plant them in your garden before the ground freezes and you'll have a new batch of your own every year.

7. Clean the Gutters

While you're up on the roof hanging lights and other decorations, take time to clean out your gutters, too. Not only will you keep the gutters from clogging — which could lead to a costly incident if left unattended for too long — but you'll ensure that there's no gunk or trash spilling out that will take away from the seasonal prettiness that you're trying to accomplish.

8. Brighten Porches, Trees, and Paths With Decorative Lights

I love holiday lights — and they're not just for Christmas anymore. You can decorate with lights any time of year, including Valentine's Day or even the Fourth of July, to give your home a certain twinkle. During the fall and winter holidays, however, you can go all out, hanging lights from trees, wrapping them around your porches and patio, draping them from awning, affixing them to windows, and more. There's an increased expense in electricity, of course, but we can't be misers about everything, right? Let yourself enjoy life a little more this time of year.

9. Hang Ornaments and Decorations on Trees

If you're hanging up lights, why not add a few decorations? These aren't the same decorations that you'd put on your indoor trees (nobody would be able to see those), but rather larger variations, like figures or shiny balls, that will give your vegetation a look of completeness and ultimately add to your curb appeal.

10. Design a Fall/Winter Garden for the Cooler Weather

If you want to be more creative than just lining your walkways and porches with seasonal flowers, perhaps you can create an entire fall or winter garden using the appropriate flora. My grandmother used to change her garden out seasonally — which was a lot of work (I know, because she made me help several times), but the end result will be something you can be proud of and the neighbors can admire.

"Create fall or winter gardens with flowers that bloom beautifully in these seasons such as sweet autumn clematis, sedum, helenium, snowdrop, or winterberry," Rosebelle says.

11. Paint the Front Doors

I recently had my front porch and door repainted to an upbeat lavender color, and it gave my home a whole new look. It's really incredible what paint can do for a stale palate. You can give your doors a once-over that will last for years, or, if you're adventurous, you can paint your door to reflect each holiday.

12. Trim Trees and Shrubs

If you have the skills a la Edward Scissorhands, try trimming your trees and shrubs into festive shapes. This activity obviously isn't for everyone — you probably shouldn't work on your front yard if it's your first time — but if you think you have what it takes, try a bush in the back yard. Plus, whatever mistakes you make will grow back, and if you discover you have a knack for it, your curb appeal can only benefit from your shear genius.

13. Camouflage Unsightly Exterior Hardware

Every home has less-than-appealing hardware on its exterior. To maximize your home beauty and hide its flaws, disguise these items, which can usually be accomplished with paint.

"Camouflage your home's electrical boxes, piping, and wires by painting them the color of the rest of your house," says Natalie Wilhelm, a luxury real estate agent in Southern California. "They are an eyesore when they are different colors and they stand out. By painting them the same colors, it makes them blend into the rest of your house."
