How One Man Used Credit Card Rewards to Go to the Last 11 Super Bowls

Millions of Americans use their rewards credit cards to earn frequent flyer miles, hotel rewards, or just a little extra cash back. But Artie Lange, business owner and New York Giants fan, goes for a more unusual reward. His credit card is his ticket to the Super Bowl. When this 50-year-old father of four arrives at Houston's NRG Stadium, it will be the 12th consecutive Super Bowl he's attended using just credit card rewards.

Rewards Get Him to the Game

Lange's Super Bowl attendance began 22 years ago when he started cajoling some of the well-connected clients of his business, which builds and renovates custom homes, to give him tickets each year. "When you're 29, it's easy to ask people for tickets," he remembers. But after a while, he could tell that his annual pleas were starting to wear thin.

Then, Lange discovered the NFL Extra Points credit card, which allowed him to earn rewards for his spending that could be redeemed for cash back, or for a variety of exclusive NFL purchases, including Super Bowl tickets.

With the NFL Extra Points card, you earn two points per dollar spent on all NFL and team purchases, and one point per dollar spent on everything else. You also get a 20% discount on all purchases from NFLShop.com, and special financing on all eligible NFL ticket purchases. New cardholders earn 10,000 bonus points after spending $500 on their card within 90 days of account opening. There is no annual fee for this card.

Lange uses his NFL Extra Points card for all of his personal purchases and many of his business expenses as well. By November every year, he's ready to go. When tickets were released in 2016, they sold out within hours. Once again, Artie Lange was able to redeem his points and book his trip to the big game in February.

How Many Points Do You Need?

For Super Bowl LI, Barclays offered three different ticket packages, each with the option to add hotel accommodations. That's a valuable option, as getting a hotel reservation in the host city for Super Bowl weekend is not only expensive, it can be almost as hard as getting the game tickets themselves.

The options for this year were:

175,000 points for two upper-level tickets, or 325,000 points including three hotel nights.
225,000 points for two mid-level tickets, or 375,000 points including three hotel nights.
275,000 points for two premium-level tickets, or 425,000 points including three hotel nights.

Furthermore, Barclays invites all cardholders to a welcome brunch featuring an NFL player. This year it will be former quarterback and nine-time Pro-Bowler Warren Moon.

Other Ways to Use NFL Extra Points Card Rewards

The NFL Extra Points program offers unique awards beyond just Super Bowl tickets. You can redeem points for tickets to regular season games, starting at 25,000 points for two tickets and even playoff games. There is also a variety of exclusive opportunities available to cardholders that vary by team, including sideline passes, tickets to the coach's press conference, and the chance to be in the tunnel as the teams exit the locker room.

And during the Super Bowl, cardholders can redeem points to attend events such as opening night with the media, a VIP player meet and greet, and a private kicking clinic with legendary kicker and four-time Super Bowl champ Adam Vinatieri.

Super Bowl Memories Worth Every Point Spent

As a New York Giants fan, Lange's favorite game was Super Bowl XLII in 2008, when his underdog team emerged victorious in a spectacular finish against the previously unbeaten New England Patriots. He also has great memories of going with his wife, who's been to 12 Super Bowls, and his son, who will be attending his 10th this year.

Then there was halftime at Super Bowl XXXVI on February 3, 2002. "As a New Yorker, there was nothing more memorable than U2 singing while all the names of the victims of 9/11 scrolled in the background." Lange says. "I had three friends that died in the towers, so that brought me to tears and is burned into my brain."

On a happier note, he and his three daughters got to go on the field during halftime of Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans in 2013, and watch Beyonce up close. As he recalls, "The kids went crazy for that experience."

Not everyone will be able to spend the amount needed on an NFL Extra Points card each year to join Artie Lange at the Super Bowl, but it's within reach for many small business owners. Others might save up their points over a few years for this once-in-a-lifetime experience, or just redeem fewer rewards points for a regular season game or other NFL experiences. But Lange's story proves that it's possible to use credit card rewards to attend the Super Bowl every year, and to bring home some incredible memories with it.

I don't watch football, I don't like football — heck, I don't even know how to play football. And I won't apologize for it. So what will I do when the Big Game takes over the first Sunday of February? The best thing I know how — make money!

Join me in exploring these options for lining my pockets with cash this Super Bowl Sunday. You can be all counterculture, too.

1. Provide a Party Setup Service

While most people plan their own Super Bowl parties, there are some folks out there who'd rather hand over the reins to someone else. I know when I host parties, I'm beat by the time the festivities begin after cleaning and cooking all day. If you've got the skills to set up a memorable get together, advertise those skills locally on social media, the Nextdoor app, or Craigslist. Keep your rates affordable ($20 an hour or less; it's not like you're discovering a cancer vaccine) and factor in the cost of goods if the host doesn't already have things to decorate and set up.

2. Drive for Lyft or Uber

I've been driving for Uber and Lyft sporadically for about six months, but I always make sure to get on the road during holidays and big events. You might not realize it, but days like Black Friday and Super Bowl Sunday are great opportunities to make more cash than usual because more people are out and about. And since Super Bowl Sunday goes hand-in-hand with drinking too much beer, you can expect that many revelers will need rides to and from their destinations that evening.

3. Tap Into Influencer Marketing Programs

In addition to blogging about personal finance, I also run a media company wherein I provide PR services to some of my clients. Recently, this has included hiring social media influencers, mainly on Instagram, to wear my clients' products and post about them. The influencers get paid for their posts, and the brand reaches targeted demographics who may have never heard of their products before. For the Super Bowl, these kinds of opportunities exist as well (but not through me; please don't contact me). Kamiu Lee, vice president of business development and strategy at Bloglovin', a leading lifestyle and social discovery platform, explains.

"If you have a successful blog or a strong social media following, the Super Bowl is a perfect time to get involved with influencer marketing," she says. "Brands that don't have that multimillion dollar ad budget still want to be a part of the biggest advertising event of the year, and in order to do so, they're looking to work with influencers who will help them reach their niche target audiences."

Of course, you should have a decent-sized following of at least several thousand to be considered for these kinds of marketing programs.

4. Become a Freelance Delivery Person for a Day

It should come as no surprise that Super Bowl Sunday is one of the biggest pizza delivery days of the year, along with Halloween, the day before Thanksgiving, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day. While you won't get any work delivering pies for the likes of the big guys, there are still opportunities available — especially if you live in cities where third-party delivery services, like DoorDash, are popular.

According to a DoorDash representative, Super Bowl Sunday is one of the busier days for delivery on the app.

"With orders for buffalo wings increasing by 500% and pizza deliveries by 300%, likely due to all the parties happening at people's homes, anyone can make several deliveries via DoorDash and still be home in time to catch the game," the company says.

5. Offer Child and Pet Sitting Services

There are several ways to get in on the lucrative baby and pet sitting game.

If you prefer child care, sites like UrbanSitter, Care.com, and Sittercity can help connect you with parents who'd like to be child-free while they whoop it up for their favorite team. Services like DogVacay and Rover.com, on the other hand, will match you with pet owners who need a helping hand during the game. Personally, I enjoy participating in the latter — I watch dogs from DogVacay frequently — and there's really nothing better than getting paid to play with puppies. Completely relaxing and satisfying.

6. Sell Your Winning Team Memorabilia After the Game

Have special or signed memorabilia from members of the winning team lying around the house? Maximize your earnings by timing the sale of these items for the team's big win. List the memorabilia on eBay and see what you get. If it's a particularly amazing game, you might make out better than you anticipated.

7. Advertise Small-Scale Catering

Like party planning, many party hosts don't want to deal with cooking all the gameday junk food if they don't have to. One alternative is to order everything in, which can get pricey — and the quality isn't always top-notch considering that takeout joints are pushing food out the door at warp speed that day.

Another alternative, however, is to order food from a small-scale caterer — and that's where you come in. If you've got skills in the kitchen, offer to prepare a spread for a friend, coworker, or family member's party. Create a menu, prepare the food, deliver and set it up, and take care of cleanup afterward. This scenario lets you enjoy the game (at least a little bit) while making money doing something you love. Again, keep your rates reasonable and research the cost of all ingredients and materials (aluminum trays, etc.) before providing a quote; the idea is to make money, not spend money you don't even have.

8. Clean Homes Before or After the Festivities

Since Super Bowl Sunday is not a national holiday — despite what many people might think — somebody's got to do that evening's or the next day's dirty work. If your schedule accommodates cleaning up after a Super Bowl party, post an ad on Craigslist or Nextdoor offering your services. If you live in a particularly festive area, you're likely to get a bite or two if you keep your prices affordable — say, no more than $20 an hour.

NFL Extra Points Card: Fumble or Touchdown?

Because teams play only eight regular season football games at home, tickets to America's favorite games can be incredibly hard to obtain and increasingly expensive. According to the Team Marketing Report, the average cost of an NFL ticket is $92.98, assuming you could find one. But wait — Barclays offers its NFL Extra Points credit card that can earn rewards in the form of tickets to any regular season game and even the Super Bowl.

How the Card Works

NFL Extra Points cardholders earn rewards for spending in the form of points in the NFL rewards program. You earn 1 point per $1 spent on most transactions, with 2 points earned per $1 on NFL or team purchases, such as game tickets and merchandise purchased in-stadium and at team Pro Shops.

Redeeming Points

When it comes time to spend your points, you have several options.

Points can be redeemed for game tickets, gift cards at the NFL shop, or as statement credit or cash.

Other Benefits

NFL tickets aside, this card does offer a handful of other valuable features:

Special financing on football tickets. When cardholders use this card to purchase tickets to football games from any participating NFL ticket team office, they will be eligible for financing on tickets.

20% off at NFLShop.com. All cardholders receive a 20% discount at NFLShop.com.

Visa Signature benefits. As a Visa Signature card, NFL Extra Points cardholders are eligible for travel accident insurance, purchase protection policies, and a concierge program.

As always, I strongly recommend against getting a rewards card if you do not plan on paying all of your balances in full. Those of us who have credit card debt should look for a product with the lowest interest rate and not be tempted to spend more to earn rewards.

Considerations

Only one point per dollar on most purchases. This nominal rate of rewards is like getting 1% cash back. Other cards offer bonus points for gas, groceries, or other common purchases. (See also: Best Credit Cards for Everyday Purchases)

Unsure Super Bowl seats. Before I go on a quest to earn points for Super Bowl tickets, it would be nice to know approximately how good those seats will be.

Foreign transaction fee. You should reconsider if you plan on using your card for foreign transactions because the fee will cancel out any rewards you earn and end up costing you more. Who This Card Is Best For

Since there is no annual fee for this card, it may be tempting to conclude that cardholders have nothing to lose by applying. Instead, you should consider what other rewards you could have earned if you spend the same amount of money on a different reward card. Since these are some of the most sought after and expensive tickets in the world of sports, this credit card can represent an excellent way for NFL fans to attend the game of their choice.

Since many of the most frugal ideas are also more creative — and fun! — I’ve rounded up some expert tips to help you have the best blow-out without blowing up your budget. Super Bowl Stew

Reminiscent of the fairy tale “Stone Soup,” this modern-day feast can easily accommodate as many guests as you can fit into your home and will likely get cheers from the crowd. Bjorn Karger, author of The Underground Guide to Living Frugal dishes on the details: “It needs everyone's help to win; just ask everyone if they could bring something to add to the stew. Have a simple broth going — water and a powdered soup-packet will do, or slice up an onion and add a few herbs and oil. Even with a small party of four to six guests you'll be surprised at how much food will come in and how fun it will be.” Ideas for ingredients guests can bring include potatoes, chicken, shrimp, okra, carrots, and even coconut and curry. Sounds like a fun and delicious way to bond!

Grilled Cheese Station

If the idea of a hotel waffle bar gives you tingles, you’ll likely be the type to appreciate a grilled cheese station at your next Super Bowl party. The idea is simple — set up a table with an electric griddle, and lay out an array of unique ingredients to create one-of-a-kind grilled cheese sandwiches. Don’t forget to include five or more varieties of cheese, and remember that the thicker the bread is, the more filling (and affordable) the sandwiches will be. Not a grilled cheese fan? Put a twist on it by offering the same set-up for paninis or even quesadillas.

A Presentable Potluck

Is asking your guests to bring a side dish or even alcohol acceptable in today’s culture? Most definitely! Will it yield positive results? Not always. As many experts have pointed out, many people interpret the word “potluck” as “stop by the dollar store and pick up a few jumbo-sized bags of chips.” If you’re concerned that guests won’t put effort or creativity into their offerings, assign categories of food to people based on their last name (first letters of A-E bring one item, F-K another type, etc.) In any case, don’t depend on guests to provide the bulk of the food and drink; always have a main course and a substantial amount of non-alcoholic offerings to go around.

Budget Beverages and Tableware

While most people assume that food will be the most expensive part of the party, drinks and tableware can be even more costly. Wona Miniati, co-author of the popular Cooking With Trader Joe's cookbook series, suggests starting simple where tableware is concerned: “Thrift stores are a great place to pick up one-off pieces. A collection of non-matchy-matchy plates and glasses can be cute and eclectic.” She also likes the idea of serving plain water with a selection of fancier garnishes like fresh citrus fruits, cucumber, or pomegranate seeds. For an affordable spritzer, combine one part juice with one part sparkling water.

Am I bitter? For sure. But I won't be bored, and neither will you with these alternative game-day activities.

1. Bake a Milky Way Bundt

2. Challenge a Facebook Friend to a Game of Scrabble

Just make sure you find someone who’s committed to finishing a game in one sitting. It’s annoying when it spans several seasons. I’m talking to you, Jake A.

3. Rearrange Your Bedroom

Position the bed in front of the mirror.

4. Update Your Contacts

I’m notorious for getting drunk, making new friends and naming them in my phone after the establishment in which we met. For example, Frank Hooters or Mandi IHOP. The next day I have no idea who they are, and I never speak to them again. Time to downsize.

5. Write a Letter to Your Congressperson

Surely there’s something you need to get off your chest. I still can’t legally marry in most states. That’s a start.

A lot of times Michael’s has a 40% off one item coupon in the weekly circular, and you can save even more money by cutting pictures out of magazines (or old photos!) instead of buying scrapbooking paper like the post suggests. You don’t need a circle cutter or a cutting mat, either. Regular scissors work just as well.

When I had everything I needed, I would abandon the cart at the end of a dark aisle for an unsuspecting employee to find and curse me for later. It was strangely satisfying.

40. Volunteer to Be a Designated Driver

Chances are all your friends will be blacked out by the time the game is over. Be a hero. Save some lives.

41. Replace the Photos in Your Frames

People are doing this less and less as time goes on, because many of us put them online for the world to see instead of printing them out to enjoy at home. That's the downside to digital cameras, and it means that our hard-copy pics are out of date. Give your frames a facelift by ordering prints from Kodak Gallery, which offers 50 free to new customers.
