It's important to keep track, because using spoiled cosmetics and skin care products can cause skin or eye problems.

Some items are worse than others. For instance, using expired mascara can lead to staph infections, pinkeye, or eye irritations that can even affect your vision in rare cases. Expired items also lose their efficiency. Many professionals agree that you have to use about 50 percent more of an old or expired product for the same effect of a new one. They can become more difficult to apply, too, so it's best to just replace your beauty products once they have expired.

Where to find the expiration date

In order to keep track of when your items expire, you need to know exactly where to look for the expiration date.

Check the whole container: Expiration dates can be hard to find, so look all around the bottle, including on the bottom and sides of the container.

If you don't see an expiration date, look for the little tub image, usually located on the back of the container toward the bottom. For certain cosmetics, the image may be on the exterior packaging that you usually throw away once you open the product. The tub has a number followed by an "M", which shows the number of months until the product expires. For instance, 12M means that the product will expire in 12 months.

If you're not sure when your items are expected to expire, look for changes in smell, color, consistency, or effectiveness as a good determination that they may have spoiled.

Standard expiration guidelines

The following guidelines can provide a good estimate of when certain cosmetics will expire. Some beauty experts recommend tossing items more quickly than others, so these guidelines follow the general consensus. They stray toward later expiration dates so you don't have to waste any product unnecessarily.

Lipstick and lip gloss

Some experts say lipstick can last one to two years, others say up to four years. What everyone agrees on is that once it starts to smells rancid, it's time to throw it out. If your lipstick has become dry or your lip gloss is extra sticky, it may also be time to throw it out.

Brushes

Makeup brushes can last forever if maintained well (see below for tips on how to care for them). If the little hairs start getting crunchy or falling out, it's time to replace the brush.

Nail Polish

Nail polish can last up to three years. If it starts to separate and won't fully mix up when you shake the bottle or if it gets gunky and doesn't provide a clean, smooth finish, it needs to be thrown out.

Perfume

Some experts say perfume is kaput after one to two, others say it can last as long as 10 years. The general consensus is that if it has thickened, changed color, or the scent starts to change or takes on the smell of alcohol, it's time to toss it.

Powder vs. liquid cosmetics

Cream-based or oil-based foundation, eye shadow, and blush is typically only good for 12–18 months. They tend to break down faster than powder-based cosmetics due to the moisture and oil content. Water-based foundation also expires quickly (six to 12 months) because water encourages bacteria growth. Conversely, powder makeup can be kept for two to three years because the dry texture inhibits bacterial growth.

How to keep track

Permanent markers or small labels are your friend here. Mark each product with the date you bought it and the expiration date, if it’s not already printed on the product itself. Keep a monthly list of what is expiring for at least the current month and next month, so you know what needs to be used up soon. By keeping track of these "expiring-soon" products, you can try to use them up quickly, so you don't waste money on unused product.

How to get more out of your products

To prolong the useful life of your cosmetics, follow these tips:

Don't share your makeup with others to avoid contamination

Keep makeup pencils sharpened often and leave the cap on

Use brushes and sponges instead of your fingers to apply makeup to avoid contamination

Store your makeup in a cool, dry, dark place

Avoid using products on infected or inflamed skin or eyes

Invest in a beauty spatula so you can get every last drop out of the bottle

Wipe your brushes daily and deep clean them every week or so with a good makeup brush cleaner

What can be kept past the date?

If you really can’t part with your favorite beauty product, there might be hope for it yet. Some items can be kept past the expiration date (such as powder makeup) because bacteria can’t grow as quickly on the dry texture. Items such as perfume, nail polish, lipstick, and blush commonly last past the expiration date, but the performance and results might not be the same.

Expiration dates for any item that touches your eyes or is made with a cream or oil base should be strictly adhered to in order to prevent skin or eye infections. If your skin is reacting badly to an item or the color, smell, or consistency has changed, it’s a good indication that the item is past its useful life.

This article is from Andrea Cannon of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. With the right polish remover, you can remove your old coat of color in a cinch and prepare your nails for the next polish.

What Is Nail Polish Remover?

Nail polish remover is a powerful solvent that can quickly remove polish from the nails, cuticles, and surrounding skin. While acetone polish removers work very quickly and effectively, acetone can be very damaging on the nails. It’s best to find a gentle non-acetone nail polish remover (that actually works) to ensure the strongest, healthiest nails possible.

Top 5 Nail Polish Removers

Zoya Remove Plus Nail Polish Remover

The Zoya Remove Plus Nail Polish Remover is the award-winning nail polish remover you never knew you needed. The 3-in-1 formula is a nail polish remover, nail prep, and nail cleaner and conditioner in one. It will clean and prep the nails while moisturizing, nourishing, and fortifying the nail plate. It can also remove surface oils from clean nails and prepare them for the next coat of color. It also promises to make your next nail polish application last longer. It is ultra-effective, but it won’t irritate or dry out the nails or cuticles. The mild formulation with glycerin is gentler than standard nail polish remover, but is just as effective at removing polish without leaving any streaking or staining behind. It has a pleasant lavender scent that reviewers tend to love. It comes in a portable, spill-proof big flipper pump dispenser enforced by a twist lock, so you can feel confident using it. You just push the cotton pad down on the dispenser to get the right amount of polish remover, just like in the salons.

This is an Amazon best-seller and has outstanding reviews from professionals and beauty mavens alike. Fortunately, gel polishes can provide beautiful results that will last for up to two weeks, so you can feel confident in your nails and won’t have to worry about constant reapplications. For women who like to keep perfectly manicured nails, gel polish may be your new miracle solution. Best of all, you can save the time and money usually spent at the salon and still enjoy the same beautiful, long-lasting results.

What Is Gel Nail Polish?

Gel nail polish can help you create salon-worthy results at home. With gel polish, you can create a smooth finish that lasts for up to two to three weeks, so you won’t need to worry about chipping, peeling, or cracking. Gel polish is not the same as regular nail polish, so you will need to use either an LED lamp or UV lamp that is specially designed for gel nail polish to set or cure it.

Once you have applied a thin layer of gel base coat, you can apply two thin layers of color and cure. Then, seal the color with a thin layer of top coat and cure once more. Professionals agree that it is best to finish the thumbs first and then the other fingers for the best results.

Top 5 Gel Nail Polishes

SensatioNail Gel Polish Starter Kit

SensatioNail offers various starter kits and gel polishes in all different colors. It is perfect for anyone who is impatient with their nails because there is virtually no dry time and the results will last for weeks. The affordable SensatioNail gel polish starter kit truly contains everything you need for 10 complete manicures.

The complete starter kit includes a gel cleanser, gel primer, gel base and top coat, color gel polish, lint free wipes, a double-sided nail buffer, manicure stick, and even an LED lamp. The kit also includes an instruction sheet to ensure that you get perfect results every time. Most LED lamps are more expensive than this entire starter kit, so it is a great value. Once you purchase the starter kit, you can continue to use the LED lamp with other SensatioNail gel polishes. Most reviewers stated that this kit provides salon-quality results that can last for weeks, with minimal effort or time spent.

Currently $35.33 on Amazon

Gelish Soak Off Gel Nail Polish

The Gelish Soak Off Gel Nail Polish performs like a gel but applies like a polish. Some people simply don't have the time, some people don't like to spend the money — me, I personally don't enjoy having strangers fondle my feet for 45 minutes.

Fortunately, mani-pedis can be easily accomplished at home, so there's no reason to go without a professionally polished set of fingers — here's how to save money and time with a little DIY. (See Also: 10 Budget Beauty Products You Can Make at Home)

What You'll Need

At a bare minimum, you will need the following items:

Nail clippers

Nail file

Cuticle trimmers

Nail brush (for cleaning)

Nail buffer or polish

Moisturizing lotion

Any additional items, like stickers or adhesive crystals, are encouraged (but not covered in this guide).

Step 1: Clean Your Nails

The first and most obvious step for getting great-looking nails is to clean them. This means removing old polish with nail polish remover and cleaning behind your nails with a nail brush and soap.

Step 2: Treat Your Cuticles

Other than getting an even coat of paint on your nails, one of the trickiest parts of performing a professional manicure is working with your cuticles. If you are prone to hangnails, you can minimize cuticle problems by carrying a good pair of cuticle trimmers (I like the ones by Tweezerman) with you at all times. I keep a pair in my desk at work, because I get hangnails every five seconds or so. As soon as one appears, I nip it in the bud.

Never tug at or bite your hangnails — that's a great way to rip your skin and cause an infection.

If your cuticles are in bad shape, you can use a cuticle dissolver to help soften dead and damaged skin for removal. If you have more time (like, overnight), a gentle product like Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream will help you scrape away dead cuticles in the morning — no trimming required.

Step 3: Shape Your Nails

There are lots of people who believe that nails should only ever be filed, never clipped. Whatever. You can use whatever tools you like to keep your nails at their optimal length. And don't think that taking care of your nails means that you have to grow them to extreme lengths — short nails look fine and can be easier to manage, especially if you have an active lifestyle.

Step 4: Scrub Your Skin Smooth

This is an optional step, depending on what shape your hands are in. A cheap homemade scrub can be pulled together using a teaspoon of sugar and a tablespoon of olive oil. Soak your hands for five minutes in warm water, then smooth the skin with a pumice stone or some scrub. Rinse well and dry.

If you have seriously dry hands, consider a pair of spa gel gloves for an overnight treatment.

Step 5: Buff or Polish

There's no rule that says that you have to wear nail polish, although colors are so varied and fun that it can be hard to resist. Regardless of whether you choose to use colored nail polish or not, you should start with a base of clear polish. It gives you a smoother surface to work with, and keeps highly pigmented polishes from staining your nails.

First Coat: Clear Polish

Clear nail polish comes in a variety of formulas now — you can get polish that moisturizes your nails, helps your nails grow longer, thickens your nails, and more. Clear polish is a smart, simple way to give nails a classy appearance, and it's easier than working with colored polish (because if you paint it on a little crooked, no one will notice).

Second Coat: Colored Polish

Nail polish comes in such a variety of colors these days that it can be easy to amass a giant collection of hues. However, the frugally minded will pick five or six colors that are fun, but also flattering. Your skin tone may clash with many standard colors (I can't wear red nail polish, myself), so try to figure out your best colors before buying.

O.P.I. nail polish is widely available and has a giant color selection. If you prefer your polishes with a little less in the way of toxic chemicals, many women swear by Butter London polishes (although they aren't cheap, at about $14 a pop). If you want something that dries a bit faster, look into Sally Hansen Insta-Dri nail polish. Easily found at most drug stores, they have a decent color selection, and because the polish is so thick, sometimes one coat will be enough. It doesn't REALLY dry instantly, of course, but it dries much faster than conventional polish.

Painting Technique

The art of painting your nails without slopping polish all over your hands is a delicate one. Here's a tutorial to help you learn how (skip to 1:20 to get to the good part).

Watch video

Top Coat: More Clear Polish

If you want to keep your color from chipping, you'll need a good clear top coat. The top coat is the key to a lasting manicure, and it's the thing that nobody seems to make time for (I know; I'm lazy, so I rarely put one on). But it will make the difference between a manicure that looks good for a week, and a manicure that looks good for a day.

Alternative to Polish — Buffing

Buffing is a cheap, natural way to add shine to your nails. Basically, you begin by using a fine-grained file to smooth out the ridges on your nail — rather like sanding a rough board. Buffing boards come with four different textures — starting with the roughest, you sand the entire surface of your nail, and then repeat using the slightly smoother board surface. By the time you are done, you will have shiny, pretty nails, but beware — buffing is, in fact, removing part of the surface of your nails. Buff too often, and you can actually buff right through your nail. So buff infrequently, and with great care.

Step 6: Moisturize Your Skin

Many nail salons have a tendency to moisturize your skin mid-mani. That's well and good, but I find it easier to wield the nail polish brush if my hands aren't slippery.

One of the best ways to ensure a flawless manicure is to do it at night, before bed. Once your nails are reasonably dry, you can moisturize your hands with some high quality lotion, and fall asleep with your hands in a highly awkward position (lying flat atop your covers). By the time you start tossing and turning, your nails should be fairly dry.

This article is from Andrea Karim of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Don’t be embarrassed — we’ve all done it at least once. What did your mom tell you she needed? Nail polish remover, right? And you were probably like, that’s not gonna work. Except it did.

Before there was nail polish remover, however, there was nail polish — a predecessor of multifunctional proportions. What, pray tell, can a tiny bottle of liquid paint do besides make millions of women (and some men) feel beautiful? You may be surprised. (See also: 51 Uses for Coca-Cola: The Ultimate List)

1. Seal an Envelope

You know when you seal an envelope but realize you forgot to sign the check or left something out all together? You can still open it without tearing the envelope immediately after licking it, but it’s hard to reseal it again with another lick; by now the glue has transferred to the other side. Instead of throwing it away and grabbing a new envelope, brush clear nail polish on the flap to seal it even better than before.

2. Prevent Rusty Screws

If you have hardware (screws, bolts, etc.) in damp places — like the bathroom, for instance — coat them with clear polish to prevent them from rusting.

3. Repair Frayed Laces

Don’t you hate when shoelaces become frayed at the end? They’re still perfecting useful but look like a mess. Dip the ends in clear nail polish, roll them between your fingers, and let the laces dry overnight.

4. Stiffen Thread

I don’t sew because it’s really annoying (seriously, it makes me feel like a pilgrim), but if this is one of your hobbies, you can thread a needle more easily if you dip the end in nail polish. The polish will stiffen the end, making it a breeze to pull through the eye.

5. Stop a Pantyhose Run

I’ll admit that I’ve worn tights before — for Halloween — but I can’t say I’ve ever put on a pair of pantyhose. I know for a fact, however (I’ve got a mom, ya know), that a dab of clear nail polish on a stocking run will prevent it from going any further.

6. Prepare Smudge-Proof Labels

If you’re making labels for your garden out of Popsicle sticks or even old silverware, you can prevent the marker ink from being ruined by the elements by coating the area with clear nail polish.

7. Ward Off Tarnish on Cheap Jewelry

Note that this says cheap jewelry! If you have costume jewelry, make it last longer by brushing it with clear nail polish to prevent tarnishing. Do not use nail polish on valuable jewelry; you will ruin it.

8. Color-Code Keys

All your keys look the same? Differentiate them by painting the tops of each key a separate color. This is great to help kids remember which key is which.

9. Use as a Band-Aid

When you’ve got a small cut — paper cut, hangnail, or other minute scratch — and you can’t find a Band-Aid, use clear nail polish as an alternative adhesive. Nail polish is nontoxic, and it works nearly the same as more expensive liquid adhesives.

10. Heal a Wart

This might sound hard to believe, but it’s true. You can heal a plantar wart by covering it with nail polish. It works because the wart needs oxygen to live, but the nail polish prevents it from getting any. Just be sure to throw out that bottle when you’re done. You don’t want to spread the germs.

11. Protect Pearl Buttons

Pearl buttons are beautiful — and they can be pricey. Make them last as long as possible by brushing them with clear nail polish. A thin coat will keep them from cracking or chipping.

12. Plug a Small Hole

Whether it’s a small leak or a tiny hole in your door or window screen, nail polish has the heavy-duty power to keep in the stuff you want in and keep out the stuff you want out. If your cooler has sprung a small leak, seal it with nail polish. Likewise, if there’s a small hole in your screen and you want to keep the bugs at bay, brush the area with nail polish.

13. Mark Poisonous Products

When I was a kid, my school gave us Mr. Yuck stickers to take home to our parents so they could label all the products that would essentially kill us. I’m not sure if that program is still intact, or even if it was nationwide, but a big X in red nail polish on toxic chemicals will do the same job.

14. Make Objects Glow in the Dark

Can’t see the buttons on the remote when the lights are out? Have a hard time finding the light switch when you come in at night? I buy stuff on a whim, often without doing my research, and am frequently disappointed in what I end up buying. But every now and again, I find a product or service that is so incredibly awesome, so life-changingly helpful, that I can't stop telling people about it. Here are three of my awesome finds of the past year. Have you found a product that you think is the bomb? Tell us about it in the comments before Sunday, February 21 at 12:00PM Pacific Time, and you'll be entered into a drawing for an Amazon gift certificate for $25!

The ChicoBag - $5 each

The world is full of reusable shopping bags. Heck, my car is full of reusable shopping bags, which ironically, I never use, much less re-use. While I care about the environment, I suffer from a medical condition known as hyperpneumo craniosis (air headedness), which means that I will end up at the front of the grocery line, only to realize that all of my reusable shopping bags are still in the trunk of my car, or in the front seat, where I put them so that I wouldn't forget them in the trunk when I went inside the store.

This is why I love the ChicoBag: it's a sturdy nylon shopping bag that can hold lots of groceries (or anything else you need to buy), but that folds away into its attached pouch. When all closed up, the ChicoBag is no larger than a Yukon potato, which is small enough for me to fit three of them into the front pocket of my purse. Thus, I am never forced to run out to my car to fetch a mess of folded shopping bags. I just whip the ChicoBag out of my purse and unfold it, impressing cashiers and baggers with my organizational skills.

I bought my ChicoBags at Whole Foods, and thus, my bags are emblazoned with the Whole Foods logo, but the upside was that I spent approximately $3 for each of them, since Whole Foods orders them in bulk and resells them. I can't stress just how much plastic I have avoided using since I bought my ChicoBags (and yes, I know that nylon is a synthetic polymer).

Goo Gone - $5 for 8 oz

I recently had a near-mental breakdown over the state of my toaster oven. Covered in crumbs and melted cheese, and displaying prominent smoke stains, its very existence filled me with anxiety. It just sat there on my kitchen counter, flaunting its filthiness. Latent OCD gripped me and shook me to the core, and I attacked the toaster with a bottle of Windex, some scouring pads, rubber gloves, the Dyson, and a look of utter madness. My boyfriend and dogs cowered in the next room, wondering from whence this crazed cleaning beast had appeared.

After approximately a half hour of scrubbing, vacuuming, and sweating, the toaster looked only marginally better, still displaying signs of smoke stains and fingerprints. Desperate to remove a sticky droplet of some disgusting substance on the front door of the toaster, I broke out my bottle of Goo Gone and applied a few drops. Presto, the blob of mystery goo disappeared. Emboldened, I began drenching paper towels with Goo Gone, polishing the toaster to a brilliant sheen. Cheese smoke, grease, oil — all were smote by the power of Goo Gone, which left behind nothing. No streaks, no marks, just a citrusy scent lingering in the air.

In a full-fledged cleaning frenzy, I cleaned the stove top, the oven, the microwave, the counters — everything was left shiny and beautiful, with minimal elbow grease involved. My kitchen was sparkling and brand-new (for approximately 24 hours, anyway), and I was newly converted to the citrus cleansing power of Goo Gone.

Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Nail Polish - $4.99 at Walgreen's

I love a good manicure, but I don't think I've ever had one in which I didn't almost immediately ruin the job by slamming my newly-painted fingernails into the closest table, car door, or wallet. As someone who doesn't like spending $20 to get my nails done, anyway, I've tried time and time again to DIY my nails at home. Usually, this involves meticulous painting of several coats of O.P.I. nail polish right before bedtime, with some frantic hand-waving and blowing to attempt to dry the polish before falling asleep. It's never fully dry by the time my eyelids finally droop closed, and I inevitably wake up to find that at least one of the nail's coat is smooshed into my pillowcase.

Honestly, who has time to do their nails?

Enter Sally Hansen's Insta-Dri Nail Color. It goes on thick, dries fast, and I never need more than two coats (unlike the O.P.I. colors). Pre-bedtime manicures take 10 minutes from start to finish, and by the time I've finally given into the Sandman, my nails look awesome.

It's true that the color choices are fairly limited compared to some other brands (you can see the available colors on the product home page), but the palette is enough to satisfy my needs. Pronto Purple is exceptionally pretty, actually.

-----------------------------------------

Because somebody always asks, I will state for the record that I have received no compensation from the producers of any of the products mentioned here.
