Yes, It's Still Safe to Visit Hawaii During the Volcanic Eruption

Reports of the ongoing volcanic eruption on the Big Island of Hawaii have been upsetting and dramatic. So far, the spewing and oozing lava from Kilauea has destroyed hundreds of homes and obliterated a scenic bay once popular for snorkeling. Near the volcano, residents have evacuated, not just because of the lava itself, but also because of air filled with ash, hydrochloric acid, and even particles of volcanic glass.

The destruction has many mainlanders wondering if they should avoid making Hawaiian vacation plans this summer. Clearly, if you had plans to tour the volcano, you'll have to change your itinerary, since most of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is closed. However, most of the Big Island and the rest of the Hawaiian Islands remain safe.

"Visitors to Hawai'i can be assured that the volcanic activity is having no effect whatsoever on the other islands, O'ahu, Maui, Moloka'i, Lāna'i, and Kaua'i," said Governor David Ige in a news release. (See also: 8 Amazing Hawaiian Resorts You Can Book With Rewards Points)

Now is actually a great time to plan a trip to Hawaii. Here's why:

1. Air quality is safe everywhere that you're allowed to go

Before leaving on your trip, you can check the Environmental Protection Agency's AirNow website or its interactive Air Monitoring Viewer, created to track air quality during the eruption. The combination of ash and fog is referred to as vog, and although it's usually not dangerous, it can ruin a sunset.

"Consider Kīlauea has been erupting for 35+ years — with ocean entries on several occasions. Vog is, therefore, not something new. However, with the current increased activity, [it] may be more visible than normal depending on wind strength and direction," the Hawaii Tourism Authority states.

Currently, neither site indicates that any areas of the Big Island have pollutant levels that would cause the general public harm. If you have a pre-existing medical condition that makes you more sensitive to pollutants in the air, consult these sites with your doctor before deciding to go. 2. The Big Island is huge and the lava area is small

It's certainly wise to look at a map of the volcanic activity to find out how far your chosen lodging is from the evacuation area. You can also check with your hotel or host. Officials are urging tourists not to try to get close enough to see the lava flow, for their own safety and to avoid further straining public safety resources.

But chances are, you'll be staying miles away from the danger zone. Most hotels are in Kailua-Kona on the island's west coast or Hilo on the east coast, about 30 miles north of the lava area. The lava covers less than 10 square miles, or about 0.2 percent of the island.

"Let's put this into context," said Hawaii County Managing Director Wil Okabe in a news conference. "All the islands in the Hawaiian chain can fit on the Big Island." He blamed the media, and confusion between the island of Hawaii and the state of Hawaii, for giving some mainlanders the impression that all of Hawaii is affected, instead of a tiny portion of one island.

3. On the other islands, it's paradise as usual

The tourism board says no other islands in the state are affected. If you're staying in Waikiki, you'll be 200 miles away from the volcano; Kauai is more than 300 miles away. If you wouldn't cancel a trip to Las Vegas because of a natural disaster in Los Angeles, don't cancel a trip to another island because of what's happening on the Big Island. 4. Summer is one of the nicest times to visit Hawaii

While there is no bad time to visit Hawaii, many people (other than surfers) prefer June through September, when the ocean is warm and calmer than in winter months. There is also a lower chance of rain than in October, November, March, and April.

5. Hawaii needs you

Tourism is the largest single industry in Hawaii's economy, and on the Big Island, 30 percent of private sector workers are employed in tourism. The Big Island is already suffering due to the closure of the national park and because some cruise ships have stopped calling there. "There are cancellations of vacations that affect the economy," said Okabe, who worried that mainlanders seeing volcanic eruption images in the media and on social networks were deciding not to go to Hawaii.

Officials say the effect on tourism revenue going forward will be difficult to predict, but the Island of Hawaii Visitors Bureau is projecting a potential 50 percent decline in business. Even more worrisome, some travel companies report that bookings to the entire state of Hawaii have declined, even though the other islands are not at all affected by the volcano.

6. You might benefit from smaller crowds on the Big Island

It's not clear whether volcano fears will lead to discounts for braver tourists this summer. But at the moment, July airfares from San Francisco to Kona, for example, look low — starting at $268 round-trip — compared to July averages in the $800 range, according to Kayak.com. Flights from the Bay Area to Honolulu can be had for as low as $258 in July.

Whether or not you save money, you might enjoy fewer crowds, especially if you visit the Big Island. Fewer cruise ships calling at the ports of Kona and Hilo and less-full flights landing at the airports could mean more beach space for you — something to keep in mind especially if you're the type of traveler likely to be annoyed when a large ship pulls in.

And if you think it's unseemly to head for an island enduring a natural disaster just to have a less-crowded holiday, consider all the people on the Big Island who rely on tourism to put food on their tables. They'll be happy you came.

9 Things to Consider Before Retiring to a Tiny Home or RV

Magazines and design blogs are full of stories of retirees downsizing to tiny homes to cut their expenses and responsibilities. With costs around $30,000 and monthly utilities as low as $15, some enthusiasts even say that trading a traditional home for a tiny house or RV allowed them to retire early. While the tiny house trend is pretty new, retiring to a life on the road in a recreational vehicle is an established tradition among retirees.

Should an RV or tiny house show be your first stop once your final day on the job is over? Not so fast. Committing to a major purchase immediately after retirement is rarely a good idea, and there are plenty of important things to consider first.

1. Will your tiny home be legal?

Federal codes as of 2018 state that a house must be at least 88 square feet, but many states have additional regulations. In areas of North Carolina, for example, you need at least 150 square feet, plus 100 square feet more for each additional resident.

2. What will you do with your stuff?

The average retiree has a lifetime's accumulation of possessions in their home: Gifts from children and grandchildren, collections, holiday decorations, kids' left-behind sports trophies. A tiny house or RV won't have room for any of that. You'll have to dramatically downsize, whether that means putting things in storage, giving them away, or having an estate sale.

3. What will the furnishings cost?

While you may be saving money on mortgage, utility, and property taxes with a tiny house or RV, don't forget that you probably won't be able to reuse any of the furniture from your previous home. 4. Will you be able to age in the home?

RVs and tiny houses are often perched on wheels or raised above ground. You may need to climb a ladder to reach your bed every night. What will happen if you end up using a cane or wheelchair? Will you be able to retrofit your tiny home or RV to make it accessible? I came across one retiree who had a rock-climbing harness modified to lift her into her loft every night; I can't help wondering how much she likes that setup if she has to use the bathroom at 2 a.m.

5. How will this affect family traditions?

If you hold a big Thanksgiving dinner every year in your regular home, don't imagine you'll continue the tradition in your tiny home or RV — at least not in the same way. These pocket-size residences have no entertaining space, and their kitchens don't facilitate cooking for a crowd. What will happen to the events you used to host? Will you invite loved ones to camp near you and eat turkey at a picnic table? Or will an adult child take over hosting?

6. Where will you park?

My husband and I sometimes daydream about spending our retirement parking an RV in the driveways of our grown children, visiting one after the other throughout the year. If this is your plan, what do your children think of it? Do they have an off-street place for you to park? What about water and sewage hookups? If you want a more permanent place for your tiny home, you'll need to find out if your state has tiny house co-ops, or what the rent would be in a trailer park. 7. Will your relationship withstand the change?

If you and your spouse have both been working for decades, retirement itself will be a big change involving a lot more togetherness than before. Are you really ready to give up private spaces in your home to spend your days within a few feet of one another? If your spouse leaves his shoes on the floor, will it irritate you to no end that you can't even walk around them? Tiny homes and RVs typically have just one bathroom; are you ready to share?

8. Can you get a loan?

Some retirees are able to buy an RV or tiny home outright after selling their traditional home. But if you need a loan, you won't be able to take out a standard mortgage on a recreational vehicle. You'll need an RV loan, and since RVs are considered a luxury item, you'll need excellent credit to qualify. With a tiny house, you'll need either an RV loan or a personal loan. 9. Which should you get, a tiny house or an RV?

Some people wonder why tiny houses cost more than RVs. Is it just because they're cute and trendy? Actually, there is a substantial reason: A good tiny house should be durable enough for everyday use, while RVs are built for vacation use, and tend to fall apart faster.

A word of advice: Try before you buy

Whether you think a tiny house or an RV is your ideal future home, you should rent at least one before you jump in and buy. Weekending in various styles of tiny homes and/or RVs is a good start, but remember that vacation life is always easier and more fun than everyday life. If you are serious about making the lifestyle leap, consider packing up and moving to a rented tiny home or RV for a substantial amount of time, like six months or a year, before you start shopping in earnest.

7 Times You Don't Have to Give Your Social Security Number

It seems like every time you fill out an application or formal document, somebody wants to know your Social Security number. Many times we just give it up — the organization is reputable, so what's the harm? But the question you should be asking yourself is, "Why?"

Why are you being asked to give up one of the most important legal identifiers and the master key to identity theft? Is your Social Security number actually required, or can you continue the process without divulging that information? Here are the times you can keep your SSN to yourself. 1. During a job interview

If you're hired for a job — or at least in the last few stages of the hiring process — your employer will request your Social Security number so they can do a background check. This is an appropriate time to provide it to them. Any requests beforehand, like on your application, are not mandatory and your chances of getting that job shouldn't be hurt by withholding your SSN.

2. Loyalty cards for retailers

If the application for a retailer's loyalty card requests your SSN, skip this section. There's no reason they need it since the card has no credit value — you're just racking up store points. Sometimes store policy mandates the application can't be processed without this information, and in that case, you're better off declining the program. Considering how many retailers get hacked these days, this is a wise move to make if you want to at least try to protect your personal information from identity theft.

3. School (unless you're applying for financial aid)

You'll need some kind of identifying information to register for school. Birth certificate, driver's license, passport, and bills showing your name and address are all acceptable documents to prove you are who you say you are. But it's illegal for public schools, in particular, to require a Social Security number to attend. Same goes for college — unless you're applying for financial aid or scholarships. In that case, they need your Social Security number in order to qualify you based on you or your family's income.

4. Doctor's offices

Generally, you're not required to provide your Social Security number to medical service providers unless it's a part of a transaction that must be reported to the IRS or required to do a credit check with one of the major credit reporting agencies. Doctors want your Social Security number for one reason and one reason only: money. They ask for it so they can send your information to a collections agency if your account becomes delinquent.

You're not required to provide your Social Security number to medical providers. Some will accept another form of numerical identification, but others may refuse to do business with you unless you provide it.

5. Government benefits

Government agencies may ask for your Social Security number, but the Privacy Act of 1974 requires these agencies to inform people whether or not a Social Security number is required by law at the particular agency. If it is not required, the agency cannot refuse to provide you benefits if you decide not to divulge your SSN.

6. Booking travel

When booking travel, only your credit card is required to pay for the trip or to put on file for incidentals, like at a hotel. Anybody asking for your Social Security number when booking travel is likely not reputable, and you should look elsewhere for arrangements. You don't need to provide your SSN to anyone during your travels, either. Your passport or driver's license will have all the information any authority needs to identify you.

7. Over the phone to someone who's called you

Never give your SSN to anyone over the phone who has called you. It may be a scam. If it's a company with which you do business, ask for the caller's name and let them know that you'll call the company directly — from the number listed online or in documents you may have, not from a phone number they provide you. There are only a few organizations entitled to collect your SSN

Barry Cohen, a former employee of the Social Security Administration, says there are only a few organizations that have the legitimate right to collect and use your Social Security number, mostly limited to the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.

"While many organizations and companies request it — and while it has become commonplace for many to collect and use it — they are, in fact, unauthorized uses and therefore you should not be required to provide the number," says Cohen. He says the SSN was never intended to be used as a national identification number. "True, law enforcement agencies will often use it. However, the Social Security Administration does not routinely provide the numbers to them."

You may find yourself unable to get a credit card, home mortgage, or other loan without supplying your Social Security number, but in most other cases, there's no legitimate reason for anyone to collect this information. Valentine's Day is once again fast approaching. People in relationships are saving up to treat their partner to something special. And for those seeking romance, it's a great opportunity to drop a few hints with a card and candy. But for the millions of people who are single, this time of year can really suck.

If you fall into the latter category, take heart. You may not be part of a couple, but your bank account will adore you. Here's why.

1. Valentine's Day is a money suck

Romance is big business in America, and retailers will do everything they can to get you opening your wallet. In 2017, USA Today found that Americans spent over $18 billion on the day for lovers.

Think about all the good that money could have done; schools, hospitals, care for sick people. Instead, it was spent on overpriced roses, chocolates, teddy bears, jewelry, fancy meals, and lingerie. This equates to the average consumer spending around $137 on February 14, although clearly some people are spending way more.

If you're single and like the idea of chocolates and flowers, wait until the day after. They'll be reduced by 50 to 75 percent (or more in some cases) for the exact same products. (See also: 14 Ways to Spend Less Money on Valentine's Day)

2. Your food budget goes a lot further

When you're shopping for two, you spend a lot more than when you're on your own. For a start, the chances of you both loving all the same foods is slim. Speaking from personal experience, I can meal prep the same food that I love for the whole week and eat it every night. It's cheap, it's balanced, and it suits me just fine. In a couple, that was a complete no-go. The same meal every night? No way. That means more ingredients, more recipes, and more money.

What's more, dining out as a single person is not as attractive a proposition as dining with a partner, so less is spent on restaurants and other eateries. And when you do eat out alone, you're spending at least half as much. Couples have a tendency to splurge on wine, desserts, and so on. When you're eating alone, you don't want to linger for as long, and that means less time to eat, drink, and spend. Those savings are delicious.

3. Weddings aren't cheap

If you're fretting about the couples around you that are planning to get married, this little statistic should ease the pain considerably: According to The Knot, the average cost of a wedding in the USA in 2016 was a staggering $35,329.

That is up $2,688 from 2015, which means you can expect that average to be even higher this year. After the cost of food and wine, renting a venue, a DJ or band, flowers, cake, invitations, photographs, and favors, the average price per guest rose to $245.

That's right, you're spending that much for each and every guest you invite. And let's not forget the cost of the wedding dress, the ring, and the expensive honeymoon after the big day. You can easily kick-start married life with over $40,000 in debt. Consider that next time you see a couple walk down the aisle.

4. You have time to focus on your career and your finances

Relationships eat up time. There's just no getting around that fact. Of course, people in happy relationships will point out that it's exactly the reason they're seeing someone; they want to spend time in the company of someone they love, and why wouldn't they? But this has to come with a sacrifice, and usually it's the career and the ability to make money that suffers.

The relationship will take a hit if one of you is working late night after night, or canceling plans at the weekend to pitch on new business. Guilt sets in, and instead of devoting time to a higher salary and new opportunities, it becomes the norm to spend free time eating out, going to movies, and taking weekend trips to the mountains or the beach. 5. No more spending money on gifts

Aside from Valentine's Day, there are plenty of other dates on the calendar that make you spend money. Birthdays, anniversaries, and major holidays will hit you in the bank account throughout the year. Depending on what your partner is into, these gifts can set you back hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars. Forget the watches, clothes, gadgets, and gift cards, and instead save the money. 6. Vacations are cheaper alone

Most couples like to do things the traditional (and expensive) way when they go on vacation. A hotel room, rental car, taxis, shows, restaurants, and bars are usually part of the mix. But when you're single, your options open up considerably, and the cost of your vacation can drop dramatically.

For a start, as a single traveler, a site like Couchsurfing can be a huge money-saver, and it's also a great way to meet other people and make new friends. You could also use Airbnb to find a bedroom in a local house that is way cheaper than a hotel room. You don't have to compromise on anything. Eat the food you want. Go where you want. Spend as little as you want. Single travelers have much more freedom, and way more options available. When you have more options, you have more opportunities to save money.

7. Two people means double the debt

The average person with credit card debt owes $5,331 on their cards, according to CreditDonkey. When you become part of a serious relationship, and get married, you combine the debts you owe. That means you are now responsible for twice what you were before.

Admittedly, you probably have two salaries (although not every couple has two incomes), but it can become daunting to look at the combined debts you have to pay off. As a single person, your debts are your own. And you can choose to live very frugally to pay off your debts, which can be a lot more difficult to do when your partner doesn't want to eat ramen and eggs four times a week.

Let's examine these ways in which retirement has improved.

1. It's lasting longer

There was a time not too long ago when people would work into their 60s and pass away within a decade or so. But these days, it's not uncommon for people to retire at age 60 and live another 30 years or more. Statistics from the Social Security Administration show that the average 65-year-old man will live another 19 years in retirement, up from 15 years two decades ago. That's a lot of time to travel, connect with the grandkids, and pursue all of the hobbies and interests you've been neglecting. While this longer retirement places pressure on people to save more, it's obviously a boon to seniors who have worked hard and deserve a lengthy retirement. 2. Your living options are better

As the population has gotten older, there has been a recognition that older citizens need different kinds of living arrangements that offer them support while still preserving independence. There is now a whole growing industry surrounding assisted living and elder care that involves more than just nursing homes. Older people have the option of living at home with some help, or moving into special communities that allow them to live freely while having access to care as they need it. In many cases, older people can move into a community while they are still healthy and active, and remain there as they begin to need more care. While some of these arrangements can be expensive, they have allowed many seniors to maintain an active lifestyle and remain connected socially well into their retirement years. 3. The internet has kept us connected

Seniors can FaceTime with their grandkids. They can watch YouTube videos to get gardening or cooking tips. They can use the internet for genealogy research, and share photos of their travels. There are even dating apps for older singles. While technology is moving fast and not always user-friendly for seniors, our new connected way of life has benefited older Americans by expanding their options for activities and keeping them less isolated. The Pew Research Center this year reported that 58 percent of seniors feel that technology has had a positive benefit on society, and nearly half say broadband internet access is an important thing to have.

4. Travel is easier

While it's true that airport security has made air travel more hectic in recent years, there are other aspects of travel that have gotten easier for seniors. The internet has made booking flights and hotels effortless, and competition among online travel sites has made it easier to find great prices. The explosion of the cruise industry has been great for seniors, and touring companies have become smarter about accommodating the various needs of older travelers. The World Economic Forum also noted that transportation infrastructure improvements worldwide has made traveling easier for seniors over the years. 5. Health care is better

Yes, there are still problems with our health care system. But there's no mistaking that we've made great progress over the years in identifying and treating many ailments and diseases. We've also made it easier for seniors to access and afford care. Consider that before 1965, older Americans did not have access to Medicare to help pay for care and treatments, and it was not until 2006 when a prescription drug benefit became available. All of this has not only helped many people live longer, but maintain a more active and healthy lifestyle deep into retirement. 6. It's no longer all or nothing

It used to be that retirement was a 100 percent proposition. It was either work full-time, or not at all. Now, seniors can ease their way into retirement, or even stay merely semiretired, thanks to the growth of freelance work and the "gig" economy. The internet has opened up more opportunities for freelance writing and consulting. Uber, the popular ride sharing company, estimates that 25 percent of its drivers are over age 50. 7. People are looking out for you

In the last half century or so, there's been growth in the number of organizations advocating for older citizens. There's the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), which has become one of the most powerful advocacy groups in the country. There's the Village to Village Network, which encourages the formation of thriving communities for seniors. Meanwhile, local governments have formed agencies specifically dedicated to the lives of senior citizens in their communities. While there is always debate about whether we can do more for older citizens, there's no doubt that resources have become more plentiful and available over the years.

Unsuitable working environments, poor internet connections, and disorganization are the downfall of many a remote worker. If you're not careful, trying to balance work and travel while you're on the road can become an almighty juggling act resulting in you doing neither one effectively. But don't despair, it is possible to get the mix just right to allow you to be a productive worker and intrepid traveler at the same time. 1. Organize your day planner

Many people confuse having a to-do list with all of their daily tasks as having an organized day planner, but they're two separate things. A to-do list doesn't have time frames on it and it can end up being an overwhelming reminder of how much you have to do. An organized day planner will break your to-do list down into manageable chunks with set times in which to complete those tasks.

Allocate each task a certain amount of time, and adjust if necessary. You can then also move these blocks around if something crops up that you don't want to miss. 2. Establish a routine

Getting into a steady routine is helpful for any working environment, but it becomes crucial when you're traveling at the same time. It can be all too easy to head out and see the sights in the places you're visiting, only for work to fall by the wayside. By establishing routines, you automatically start to prioritize certain tasks and they become a normal part of your daily or weekly workflow.

Your routine is a personal thing, but try and get into the practice of doing certain things at the same time on a regular basis so they become habits rather than chores. For example, I routinely check and reply to my emails when I get up in the morning, then I exercise, and then eat breakfast before starting my day.

3. Find the right accommodations

As appealing as a secluded beach hut on a deserted island may sound, if it has no Wi-Fi, or even electricity, it'll effectively ruin your ability to do any work. Also, accommodations with too many distractions like a buzzing bar and social pool area might be just as hard to work in, so settle for something that offers a quieter working environment. It should still be close enough to the local action that you're able to head out and explore when you want.

In addition, a winning accommodation should have all of the conveniences that you need to feel at home and help you save time. That means a kitchen where you can prepare food if you want to, facilities to do your own laundry instead of having to find a laundromat, and above all, a speedy internet connection.

If you want to avoid spinal injuries from working hunched over your computer on your bed all day, then you should also look for somewhere with a good workspace, preferably a desk. 4. Plan ahead

I used to plan my time on a day-to-day basis around which tasks happened to be the most pressing. It didn't take me long to realize this is a chaotic way of doing things, and in fact, can't really be considered planning ahead at all. In my experience, the most effective way of working on the road is by organizing your day planner for a whole cycle. Most of my work is done on a monthly basis, so toward the end of each month, I plan out my working days for the entire following month.

To do this, it's best to work backward, starting with all of the tasks that you have to complete for the month. Then around the larger tasks, you can start to fit in all of the smaller things you need to complete. Planning ahead for a whole month also means that you can accommodate any large events or travel activities you have planned and rearrange your work tasks before and after those activities. 5. Use your travel time wisely

The time spent actually traveling from points A to B can often feel like dead time in your work schedule. Flights, train rides, bus transfers — whatever mode of transportation you take, that's time you could be spending doing something far more productive than just staring out the window. Unless the particular journey is something you want to experience, like a bus ride through a beautiful countryside, then it's time to start using your travel time to get some work done. Choose the tasks that you're going to be able to do most easily when you're in transit, ideally things you can do offline, so you're not relying on an internet connection that may not materialize. It takes practice to be able to work in less than ideal situations, so don't expect to immediately be at your most effective the first time you try it. However, once you get used to working with distractions around you, you'll find you can get things done virtually anywhere. Noise-cancelling earbuds can be a big help.

6. Make the most of your technology

Technology undoubtedly has its dangers, and it's easy to fall into the trap of mindlessly scrolling through your Facebook feed and watching endless cat videos instead of knuckling down to work. But as much as it can be distracting, technology is also a powerful tool to harness for your own good.

Upgrading your travel electronics can have a huge impact on your work efficiency. If your laptop and phone are constantly bogging down, then you're wasting time on them. You might be surprised just how much time you spend looking at that hour glass or color wheel while waiting for programs to load or perform a task. Once you make the necessary upgrades, you can cut down your work time considerably.

Buying a local sim card can also give you both freedom and a reliable connection, and often packages are cheaper in foreign countries. This will allow you to tether your laptop from your smartphone, meaning you're not reliant on intermittent Wi-Fi or holing up in coffee shops for days on end.

7. Travel slowly

Slow travel is amazing in not just allowing you to spend more time exploring each destination, but you also spend less money on average while you're there. It's also ideal for balancing your work with travel because you don't have to rush around fitting a lot of things into a short span of time. You have enough time to focus on both your work and your travels so you don't have to sacrifice one to do the other.

Setting yourself up in a destination for a good period of time, say a few weeks or months rather than a few days, allows you to establish routines. When I got an email invitation to a members-only presale, I realized that the wallet full of credit cards I've accumulated for the miles and points have other great perks that I might not be using.

1. Concierge service

You have a night free in a strange city, and you want to make the most of it. If only you had someone to pick a restaurant and a show for you and charge everything to your credit card...

If you have an elite-level credit card, you do have that person in the form of complimentary concierge service. You can ask your credit card concierge to buy tickets to a concert or show that is likely to sell out, so you don't have to drop what you're doing to get online the moment they go on sale. You can ask them to have flowers delivered to your partner or even to have them send a limo to get your kids from school. You pay for the cost of the goods or services — you can set a limit in advance — but the concierge's time is free.

I have a friend who loves to dine at Michelin-starred restaurants, and reservations can be hard to get. She has used a credit card concierge service to score tables all over the world.

"I even had them find me a place in Atlanta for a coworker that has lots of dietary restrictions," my friend said.

You think that's excellent service? Then consider that other clients have successfully had credit card concierges track down obscure or in-demand items and had them delivered to their door. If your kid wants a popular toy this holiday, it might be worth asking a credit card concierge to find it.

2. Members-only spaces and experiences

You're probably aware that some credit cards get you into airport lounges. But did you know there are also members-only lounges with complimentary beverages in some theme parks, including Universal Studios, and at big events such as the Super Bowl? And at Disney World, certain credit card holders have access to exclusive character meet-and-greet sessions.

3. Shorter lines

Some theme parks and other attractions have a dedicated line for certain credit card holders. If you visit often, I can see holding a credit card for that benefit alone.

4. A smoother trip through airport security

A number of high-end travel cards reimburse users the $100 application charge for Global Entry, which also comes with membership to the Transportation Security Administration's PreCheck program. Membership in both these programs means that you can go through a quicker security line in domestic or international airports, and when you're returning from abroad, you can skip the immigration line and simply scan your passport at a kiosk.

5. Free museums

At least one card-issuing bank partners with museums nationwide to offer cardholders free entry on certain days.

6. Hotel room upgrades

Certain hotel chain credit cards offer cardholders status, which can lead to getting an upgraded room when you check in. It can also get you free Wi-Fi at the hotel, late checkouts, and other perks. 7. Free rides

At least one credit card offers a monthly credit for a ride sharing service, smoothing everything from business travel to barhopping without a designated driver.

This holiday season, my family will be checking suitcases instead of relying on carry-ons, because I hold one of the airline's premium credit cards that gives cardholders one free checked bag. 10. Free internet

Some credit cards give you membership to wireless plans so that you can get online on participating flights or in other public places.

The U.S. dollar is actually legal currency in Panama so you’ll be able to see just what value you’re getting without any conversions. The cost of living in Panama is comparatively low. As a result, U.S. citizens have more purchasing power than ever in Spain right now, making the prospect of retiring here even more enticing. The cost of living stands at about 27 percent lower than the U.S., according to Numbeo, so it’s no surprise that there are over 5.5 million foreign nationals living in Spain.

4. Ecuador

If you’re a lover of the great outdoors, then Ecuador could be the ideal choice as your retirement location. It’s home to portions of the Andes mountain range and the Amazon Rainforest, some of the most untouched Pacific Coast beaches in South America, and the remarkable Galápagos Islands.

Pricewise it comes in at around 50 percent cheaper than the U.S., according to Numbeo, so you’ll have plenty of cash left over for exploring and adventuring each month. Ecuador adopted the U.S. dollar in 2000 as its official currency so your nest egg won’t be affected by exchange charges or currency fluctuations. 6. Malaysia

Malaysia is one of the most diverse countries in Asia, making it a continuously interesting place to live. It has influences from Malay, Chinese, and Indian populations clearly visible in the culture and cuisine, with an added bonus that English is widely spoken. It also has bustling, modern cities that have the same amenities, restaurants, and funky bars that you’re used to in the U.S.

Many retirees enjoy a better standard of living here than they would be able to afford in the U.S. thanks to the cost of living being around 52 percent lower, according to Numbeo. Health care is one of the biggest reasons that retirees come to Malaysia — its quality is so good that a medical tourism boom has sprung up.

7. Malta

Thanks to the laid back island life with year-round sun, Malta is a popular destination for retirees. This tiny archipelago of just three islands lies in the Mediterranean Sea between the South coast of Italy and North Africa and has a population of around only 400,000.

Many of Malta’s residents are English speaking, and one of the islands, Gozo, is home to a particularly large expat community with a big American contingent. Numbeo reports that prices here are around 13 percent cheaper than in the U.S. overall, but it’s possible to live for much cheaper.

8. Portugal

Europeans have been retiring to Portugal for decades, attracted by the warm weather, the picturesque coastline, and government tax breaks offered to overseas retirees. But the secret is slowly beginning to reach U.S. shores as Americans start to realize just what they’re missing out on.

Portugal has some impressive infrastructure boasting world class golf courses, fantastic restaurants, and some of the highest rated health care in the world. Despite all of this, the cost of living here is still relatively low, and you’ll pay around 34 percent less in Portugal than in the U.S., according to Numbeo.

9. Thailand

One of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, Thailand is also a hot spot for retirees from all over the globe. Thanks to its diversity, it’s possible to settle down in a vast city, a lush green mountainous region, or even a secluded island with golden beaches.

Despite its popularity, Thailand remains one of the cheapest countries in Asia to live in, with costs at over 43 percent less than in the U.S., according to Numbeo. Additionally, it's easy to turn to knowledgeable friends and family for feedback before deciding to pay for outside help. Costly networking meals

Expensive clothes

Sure, you'll want to have appropriate dress clothes and shoes that make you look like a professional. But there's no need to go overboard. Also keep in mind that many employers allow for casual dress. In those situations, you may be able to save money by skipping the suit altogether and wearing tailored, well-fitting clothing. If you don't already have these in your closet, you can buy them for less than $100.

Premium job search engines

Many job boards and career networking sites offer paid services that promise enhanced job listings and the ability to be labeled as a "featured" applicant. These services can come with some bells and whistles that might help you in your job search, but they are not cheap. LinkedIn Premium, for example, starts at $25 per month. These services can't guarantee you'll get a job, and aren't a replacement for having good qualifications and networking.

Costly technology

You may be tempted to go out and get a new computer or smartphone to help you with your job search. Perhaps you think a costly piece of software will enhance your chances of landing a position.

In reality, it's rarely necessary to upgrade your technology just to search for jobs. Sure, a reliable computer will help, along with a phone so companies can reach you. But there are many technological solutions that don't cost a dime, including free online software that can help you easily set up a professional website. Besides, the most important component to getting a new job is the most low-tech one there is: you. Your skills, qualifications, and experience are what matter most.

Travel for jobs you don't want

I'm a firm believer that interviewing for a job can be beneficial, even if it's for a job you aren't crazy about. But if you have to incur significant expense to show up, it's probably not worth it. There's no need to hop on a plane and book a hotel for a job that does not interest you, unless you have a strong indication that it could lead to a more attractive opportunity. Even train fare and parking may be a waste of money if you really don't have an interest in the job.

Education or certifications you don't need

It is true that you should never stop learning, and it's never a bad idea to enhance and expand your skill set to give your career a boost. But you need to be thoughtful in what you pursue.

Why spend thousands of dollars for an associate degree in accounting when your background is in engineering? Why spend thousands more to be trained in Adobe Creative Suite if you have no real interest in graphic design? Remember, there are many professional "certifications" that are not worth the paper they are written on. Taking some classes or gaining skills can boost your career, but only when they can truly help you, and only when these efforts are properly aligned with your goals and strengths. But most people don't travel enough to earn the points needed to score such deals. You may find the points and miles that these travel reward cards offer to be difficult, or sometimes impossible, to redeem for reservations you need. Here are six reasons that cash-back cards could be a better choice than travel rewards.

1. Cash back offers consistent value

What's a point or mile worth with your favorite airline or hotel program? You may never know, as you could receive excellent value from your rewards one day, and very poor value at another time. But with cash back, you always know exactly what your rewards are worth (usually 1 cent per point or a certain percentage of your purchases).

2. Cash-back cards have gotten more competitive

It used to be that a strong cash-back card allowed you to earn 1 percent on most purchases, and perhaps 2 percent on a few bonus categories such as groceries or gas. But now, there are plenty of cards that offer as much as 5 or 6 percent bonus cash back on purchases from eligible merchants such as gas stations, grocery stores, and office supply stores. 3. Frequent traveler programs are less valuable

If you've tried to redeem your airline miles or hotel points recently, then you know how hard it can be to get substantial value from your rewards. For example, most airlines now charge a "standard" rate that requires at least double the miles of the traditional rates, often referred to now as the "saver" rates. Likewise, hotel programs may claim to make every standard room available as an award for points, but many independently owned properties have gotten around this by curtailing the number of rooms that are labeled "standard." As a result, you may well be told that no rooms are available for your points, as the remaining ones have a superior "city view" or "garden view."

4. Cash back is more flexible

Even when you can earn travel rewards that are equal in value to the cash back that you could have earned, you may find yourself wanting cash instead. By using a travel rewards card, you are limiting yourself to travel rewards, whether or not you actually want or need to travel. For example, if you have several thousand dollars' worth of travel rewards, you might regret not earning cash back if you decide not to travel next year due to illness, job loss, or just a busy work schedule.

5. Points and miles depreciate, while cash earns interest

As travel reward programs have become less valuable, your points and miles have fallen in value as a "currency." And there's seemingly no end to this process. It's a fair bet to say you can expect the miles that you've already earned to fall in value each year. This is important as it can take some people years to save up enough travel points for a big trip. On the other hand, you can invest your cash back rewards and earn interest just as you would on your other savings.

6. Travel prices are falling

Flying is less expensive than it once was, thanks in part to low fuel prices and increased competition from ultra low-cost airlines. It's actually common to find sales offering domestic airfare for less than $100 each way. While that's great news for travelers, it also means that your frequent flyer miles are worth less than they were when flights were more expensive. In addition, home sharing services like Airbnb have reduced the cost of lodging for many travelers. This makes hotel stays less necessary and their rewards points less valuable.

9. Malibu Dream Airstream in Malibu, California

Five hundred dollars might seem like a lot to sleep in a trailer, but how gorgeous is this Airstream perched on a bluff above a Malibu beach? Gorgeous enough that Vogue chose it as the backdrop for a photo shoot of bffs Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss. And the entire ocean-facing side opens up for an endlessly gorgeous view.

Cost: $500 per night and up.

10. Airstream2go, various locations

But what if stationary wasn't the way you envisioned your Airstream adventure? After all, these babies were made to roll. This company will rent you one of their 28-foot International Signature Series Airstreams, laid out to sleep up to six, and a Chevy Tahoe to tow it with. They'll even plan an itinerary and program your GPS for you. Sample trips include driving through the Berkshires, exploring Coastal Maine, or rambling through the Southwest. 11 Ways to Get the Most Value From Your All-Inclusive Vacation

By and large, an all-inclusive vacation is a sure bet for the price you're paying. The quality of what's included, of course, varies depending on where you're staying, so you should do your due diligence before booking. There are tactics, however, on how to make the most of your travel dollars and head home satisfied with a smile on your face. With these tips, your next all-inclusive resort vacay or cruise will be the best one yet. (See also: Are All-Inclusive Vacations and Cruises Worth the Money?)

1. Determine what "all-inclusive" really means at the resorts you're considering

"All-inclusive" is a relative term. Generally, it means that your food and nonalcoholic beverages are included for the length of your stay, but it's important that you determine all the perks before settling on a place to unwind and relax during your time off.

Does your purchase include alcohol, activities and water sports, transfers, and resort fees? What about exit costs or tourist cards for immigration? What is the practicality of the pickup for your return departure, and what does that value mean to you?

Shy Bredewold, owner of online travel agency Odyssean Travel, stresses the importance of getting to the nitty-gritty of what's included in your "all-inclusive" package. She proposes a hypothetical situation to help dissect the value.

"For example," she says, "there's a free shuttle back to the airport, but it needs to be affordable, so they pick up at several hotels. You are given a time from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for your return to the airport. Is it good value to check out early and waste your last morning, hung over in the lobby — or might you better spend $20 on a local taxi to take you at a time convenient to you?"

With the taxi option, you get to eat and drink at the hotel, use the pool or the beach, and enjoy two more hours of your life at the resort instead of taking turns getting drink refills in the lobby in case the coach arrives. 2. Consider the tiers of "all-inclusive" before making your purchase

Some resorts offer tier pricing for their all-inclusive options, which basically means you'll have access to more perks, the more you pay. You can mind your budget and opt for a lower tier, which may restrict you to a single resort, or you can upgrade, the provisions of which could grant you mobility to travel to nearby resorts and enjoy services in a different atmosphere.

"The Oasis branded resorts in Cancun, for example, have been known to allow guests to use some of the facilities at both sites along the Cancun resort strip." Bredewold explains. "Get a little change of scenery, a new beach, different bar staff, or maybe even new drinking and dining options."

Some resorts also are split into sections. If you're looking for the most options for dining and quiet bar spaces, consider taking the higher value wristband or resort access.

Bredewold adds, "A Melia resort in Cuba recently split into three tiers — the highest value (and cost) stay includes adults-only [areas] so you can escape the children of other people if you so desire." (See also: 6 Questions to Ask Before You Book a Vacation Package)

3. Research the included entertainment

I'm somebody who likes to keep it moving during my vacations. I enjoy lounging on the beach briefly, but for the most part, I enjoy the games, entertainment, and activities the resort has to offer, especially if I've already paid for them. Of course, to make sure you get your money's worth, it's important to scout out these extras in advance to achieve maximum enjoyment. If water sports like snorkeling and paddle boarding are included but aren't appealing to you, are you sure you want to pay for them? Likewise, investigate the nightly entertainment options so you know what you're in for ahead of time, as well. You'll narrow down your choices quicker if you dissect the perks to match your personality.

4. Books tours as a group, if possible

While everyone in your party may not be on the same page as far as activities and excursions go, you should try what does appeal to most of you at the same time so you can qualify for group discounts where applicable. (See also: How to Book an Amazing Cheap Vacation Package)

5. Take advantage of the fitness class (you'll thank yourself later)

I once took an amazing all-inclusive vacation to the Montage Resort in Laguna Beach, California. It was the most luxurious getaway I've ever taken, and I just couldn't pass up the small-group fitness classes offered in the morning. These boot-camp style classes not only helped me start my day, but they also made me feel much better about stuffing my face throughout my four-day trip. Plus, the classes took place on the beach, with the waves of the Pacific Ocean crashing just a few feet away, and how often do I get to experience that? Other classes may be offered with your itinerary, like yoga, spin, or cardio, all of which are a great value (that you've already paid for) considering how much one-off classes cost regularly in real life.

6. Order room service

Room service is one of those luxuries that most of us forgo when we're on vacations. But when it's all-inclusive, go ahead and have dinner delivered straight to your door. I especially take advantage of late-night room service if I've been out all night having fun. PB&J sandwiches, chips, and chocolate-chip cookies with milk are just what the doctor ordered. Or, ya know, go huge and get the steak and shrimp cocktail. Whatever floats your bloat.

7. Make dinner reservations at the specialty restaurants

Specialty restaurants at resorts and on cruises book up the fastest, so get your reservations in early so you don't miss out on the best cuisine the joint has to offer. You'll also be able to secure a decent seating time by planning ahead too, so you're not breaking bread an hour before bedtime.

8. Pack snacks from the buffet if you're going off campus

If you're headed out for a day trip that doesn't include lunch, pack your own at the buffet in the morning and take it with you. Choose items that will travel well and hold up without refrigeration for a few hours. Avoid mayo-based dishes if you know what's good for you.

If you're splitting your vacation time at a pay-as-you-go and an all-inclusive resort, however, plan your off-campus trips for your non-all-inclusive days. For instance, I spent a week in Costa Rica on a Groupon Getaway a few years ago. The pay-as-you-go part of which was ripe for exploration and adventure, but when I got to the all-inclusive I put my feet up, ate nachos by the bucketful, and never set foot off campus.

You'll only get the most for your money when you're using the services, eating the food, and participating in the activities while you're there. Enjoy it while you can.

9. Stay brand-loyal for the best discounts

Find a brand you like and stay loyal.

"If you can accept limited options, you may find that rewards points and other perks add up faster by booking with one brand or chain exclusively," says Bredewold. "You may even be able to double up in some instances if the vacation package is administered by an airline but includes a stay at a branded hotel." 10. Get the "good stuff" at the lobby bar

Some top shelf liquors are not at every bar, and the swim-up bar tends to have the smallest selection of premium brands, according to Tom Carr, CEO of PreferredVacations.com. 11. Look for "Kids Stay Free" offers

Some resorts offer deals like "kids stay free." For instance, the Dreams Resorts & Spas, Now Resorts & Spas, and Sunscape Resorts & Spas properties offer a Kids Stay Free deal that will save families a bundle. At these resorts in particular (program details will vary at other destinations that offer a "kids stay free" promotion), one kid stays free when staying in the same room as a paying adult. 5 Times Splurging on Experiences Is a Bad Idea

If you're a regular reader of Wise Bread, you know that we encourage you to spend your money on experiences rather than material things. You will be happier if you make great memories, rather than stockpiling great electronics, clothes, shoes, watches, and jewelry. But there are two sides to every story. And sometimes, these experiences are just not worth the splurge.

1. Exotic destination weddings

We've all received those wedding invitations that, at first, seem like a dream come true. We picture ourselves tanning on a beach in Hawaii or Jamaica with a cocktail and a smile. But that's usually not the case. Destination weddings don't give you a lot of time to yourself. You are there for the bride and groom. It's their big day, they've spent a lot of money on it. You'll be expected to go to rehearsals, receptions, and other parties. You may well have to hang out with a bunch of people you don't know or even like all that much. And to top it all off, you're paying through the nose to go on this trip. It will likely cost thousands. You might make some good memories from it, but this isn't the same as a vacation on your own terms. (See also: 6 Ways to Resist a Splurge)

2. Tickets to the Super Bowl

Blasphemy, right?! Well, not really. When it comes down to it, a trip to the Super Bowl is a great experience if you can get it for the right price. But if you're buying the tickets through the secondary market, or even worse, getting an "On Location Experience," you are going to be spending a small fortune. SeatGeek.com states that the average price of a Super Bowl 52 ticket will be between $2,500 and $3,000. For those On Location Experiences, you're looking at between $6,000 to $12,000. Up to $12,000 to see a football game. Now, think about the experience you're going to have for that money. You're there, in the stadium, but most of the time you're actually watching the action on the big screen projection. You're paying an arm and a leg for food and drinks. You also had to pay to get to the Super Bowl and stay in a hotel, unless you're lucky enough to live in that city. (See also: How One Man Used Credit Card Rewards to Go to the Last 11 Super Bowls)

What else could you do with that money? How about two weeks in Europe? Or Japan? Or paying down debt? Wouldn't that be a better use of your money? Forget the Super Bowl experience, and watch it on a big screen at home with your friends and family.

3. Extremely high-priced restaurants

There are some restaurant experiences that balance good food with a reasonable check at the end of the meal. And there are others that just blow the budget completely out of the water. You may be thinking that once, just once, you want to spend a whole lot of money on an amazing meal … just to experience it. Well, honestly, you will not be getting your money's worth. For example, Sublimotion in Spain charges over $2,000 per person for a series of 15-20 small courses. It gets exceptional reviews of course, but $2,000 for a meal is just an absurd waste of your cash, and you will find stunning food in your area for way, way less money. 4. A trip on the Orient Express

I mean, it's a train. It may be the most famous train the world, but is it worth the cost to ride? If you were to book a cabin suite from Paris to Istanbul, the cost is almost $16,000! If you instead opt for a double or single room, it's still up there at around $8,000! And what do you get for that? Honestly, not all that much. Some nice food, some fancy service, and nice views.

However, if you purchase a First Class InterRail ticket for the same journey, with the same views, you will only be out of pocket around $400 per person. Don't bother with the Orient Express. It's overpriced and underwhelming, and includes a lot of wood paneling and polished brass.

5. The big fight

Despite the phenomenal rise in popularity of UFC, world-class boxing matches still command massive audiences. And it seems massively inflated ticket prices, too. In 2015, Forbes reported that the Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Manny Pacquiao fight had ticket prices so incredible they broke records. As hard as it is to believe, some tickets went on sale for upward of $350,000! That's right, over a quarter of a million dollars, for a fight that many thought did not come close to living up to the title of "Fight of the Century." If you're thinking, Well, yeah, but most tickets didn't cost anywhere near that price, then you're right. The worst seats in the house were being sold for over $3,500 per ticket. And that would have gotten you on the upper level with a view that left a lot to be desired. People were spending upward of $150 to attend the weigh-in for that fight! And these fights will continue to garner a lot of attention, and ask for grossly-inflated sums of money. Watch it on Pay-Per-View if you really want to see it, and split the cost with your friends.

How to Have a Fun Family Road Trip Without Breaking Your Budget

You've got your budget-friendly destination. You found the best hotel rate. You've got activities and meals in mind that won't eat up your savings. But what about the expense of the actual travel? From snacks to fuel to entertainment to handling the unexpected, these tips will help you keep costs low while you're on the road.

Be strategic with fuel

There's not much you can do to control the cost of fuel, but you can make sure your vehicle is as fuel-efficient as possible. The best way to do that is to keep your car well maintained. Keep up with regular oil changes and tire alignment, and your car will run cleaner, cooler, and have less drag.

Also, don't wait until your tank is on empty and you're forced to use the nearest gas station. Instead, use a service like GasBuddy to find nearby gas stations with the best fuel prices. Plan your stops accordingly; if you're traveling with young kids, chances are one of them will need to use the restroom, anyway. (See also: Best Credit Cards for Road Trips)

Pack snacks and beverages

The most cost-efficient way to have plenty of snacks on a road trip is to bring your own. You can't be sure what fast food joint or gas station offers will be available. And how much beef jerky can you eat before you start to regret it? Buy or make your family's favorite snack foods in bulk before you leave, then package into single servings. Choose snacks that make the least possible mess. It's much easier to vacuum up crumbs than it is to clean gummy, sticky stains from car upholstery.

Water is the best beverage for road trips. Take a cooler with ice and a couple of one-gallon jugs filled with fresh water. Refill individual bottles as needed. Juice, tea, or soda will lead to endless needs for bathroom breaks. Coffee, of course, fuels many drivers, as well. I prefer to start the journey with my own home-brewed coffee in my travel mug. Bring on-the-go entertainment

The biggest challenge for road trips with children is keeping them entertained. As with food, bringing your own entertainment options from home saves time and money.

You don't need special items for road trip entertainment; you just need portable options. Mess-free art materials are great: colored pencils, washable markers, and sketchbooks. Download a selection of audiobooks before you go; Librivox offers hundreds for free. Update your music playlists, and download movies for them to watch on tablets you bring along. Travel based on time of day

The best time of day to travel depends on time of the year, personal preference, destination, and the length of the trip. Many parents of young children find it easier to travel at night, when the kids will sleep for most of the way. That's a great option if the driver can stay awake.

During the summer, driving at night can also keep the temperature lower, meaning less stress on the engine and better fuel efficiency. The calculable savings is minimal, so compare it to the increased coffee you'll require to drive all night before you make a decision.

The other factor to consider is traffic. If your timing will have you entering a major city at rush hour, change it. Leave earlier, leave later, or plan an extended rest stop along the way. Sitting in traffic is uncomfortable and stressful, and the stop-and-go movement is hard on your car and fuel efficiency.

Prep for travel emergencies

Take baby wipes. I cannot stress enough how handy, no, how essential a pack of baby wipes is in any car. Don't have a baby? Doesn't matter. Baby wipes will save the day in so many ways.

Coffee spill? Baby wipe. Messy face? Baby wipe. No napkins from the takeout place? Baby wipes. Smelling a little less-than-fresh after eight hours on the road? Baby wipes.

A first aid kit is essential, too. Buy a pre-packed one, or make your own and keep it in the car. You can include the essential items you know you'll use the most, as well as any specialized care items you might need.

The other item that can save you from excess stress and cost is a car emergency kit. You should have the supplies to change a tire as well as a spare tire, flares, and jumper cables. It's helpful to have a flashlight and basic tools on hand, as well. I've found it's also helpful to have someone who's adept at changing tires. (See also: The 5 Best Jump Starter Kits)

Regardless of your skill level, though, preparation can save you in many ways. When you're prepared with snacks, entertainment, and emergency supplies you'll spend less and be more relaxed. That makes for a much better road trip.
