The mania around vanlife is absolutely everywhere, gracing the covers of glossy lifestyle magazines and filling up our social media feeds. But while it's definitely enjoying a moment, it's also a trend that's not going anywhere anytime soon.

The attraction of taking to the open roads with minimal personal belongings is easy to understand, but not everyone knows how to achieve it. If you've got a dose of wanderlust and have your heart set on trying out the van lifestyle, here's how to buy a campervan and travel across the country.

How to decide if vanlife is for you

The first thing to do when thinking about buying a campervan is to decide whether you're truly cut out for the journey. Many of the Instagram pages and blogs dedicated to this kind of lifestyle make it look both effortless and romantic. In truth, it's not a way of life that will suit everyone. There are a lot of aspects of living in a van that you may not enjoy.

The most obvious one is existing in an extremely confined space. And if you're traveling with a friend or a partner, it becomes even more difficult. Keep in mind that it's also unrealistic to believe you're going to be able to keep the van clean at all times. So if you're averse to a bit of grime, you might need to rethink it.

Choose between a DIY or ready-made van

There are plenty of options when deciding what type of vehicle to buy, and what you settle on is an entirely personal decision. First of all, you need to decide whether you want to build your own van interior or if you're going to go for a ready-made one.

DIY

Building your own is part of the appeal for many people and it certainly has its benefits. It's usually cheaper to buy an old camper and convert it yourself, rather than purchase one that someone's already renovated. It also means that you can customize it to your specific needs.

Ready-made

Buying a ready-made camper van also has its merits, and even though it may cost more, you'll be able to hit the road right away. If you have don't have the manual skills to renovate or convert a van, then this may be your only option.

Do some research to determine what models and makes you're a fan of, then start checking sites like Craigslist and specific campervan sales sites to get an idea of how much they cost. Once you've gotten to know the market, you can make an informed decision. As soon as you see a van that tickles your fancy and checks all of your boxes, don't be afraid to make an offer.

Whatever you opt for, it's always a good idea to get a mechanic to evaluate it before you purchase, as you want your vehicle to be as reliable as possible.

Pick a route

One of the real joys of traveling in a campervan is the unparalleled freedom. However, it definitely pays to have a rough plan of where you're journey is going to take you. This way, you can avoid some of the stress over where to camp for the night, or where you can pick up groceries.

That said, you should still allow yourself the flexibility to enjoy the freedom, whether that be spending an extra night in a beautiful camping spot you've stumbled upon, or checking out a town you're never heard of on a whim. You don't need to have every minute of each day planned, just an outline of some places you want to visit and how to get between them. And don't forget to factor weather into your decision-making.

Figure out where to sleep for cheap (or free)

Paying for campsites every night can quickly add up, with some even charging prices up to around $50. So to avoid bankrupting yourself on parking spots alone, you need to work out how to camp in your van on the cheap, or even better, for free.

With a bit of research and forward planning, you can find stellar options for very little money. To start, most Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and National Forest land is free to camp on, and there are numerous free campsites all over the country. Pack smart

Packing smart is essential to a great van experience. Without some prior planning and an idea of where everything is going to go, you'll end up with too much or too little. Not only that, but your van will be a disorganized mess, which is the last thing you want when you're living in such a tiny space.

It's also important to find a place for absolutely everything you're taking. A well-designed campervan should have lots of little storage spots that help maximize the space. While the idea isn't to fill all of these spaces simply because they're there, you should definitely ensure that everything can be put away neatly when you need to. It's possible to have virtually any kind of experience you're after in the U.S., but many people believe it to be more costly than heading abroad on a vacation.

Opt for low-cost accommodations

If you're not careful, accommodations can unnecessarily eat up a huge chunk of your travel budget. It will likely end up being your largest expense (unless you choose free options), so it's vital to tackle this first to bring costs down.

Airbnb

Airbnb is particularly great as an alternative to hotels in major cities — which tend to be far more expensive. The cheapest way to use Airbnb is to use the private room feature. This allows you to book a room in someone's house rather than having to shell out for an entire place of your own. Couchsurfing

This is by far the cheapest option when it comes to finding budget accommodations, because it's absolutely free. It's best to try and plan couchsurfing far in advance, as it's unsurprisingly a popular service, and can get booked months ahead. Another thing to keep in mind is that it's mainly available in big cities, so you'll need to plan accordingly if you're heading to a more rural area.

Camping

Campsites can cost as little as $5, but if you want to save even more, there are plenty of options for dispersed camping (aka wild camping) that are absolutely free. Wild camping is widely available on Bureau of Land Management land and in National Forests. Nosh on a budget

Food is reasonably cheap in the U.S., so keeping yourself fed and watered shouldn't cost an arm and a leg. However, there are ways to keep your food costs down.

Cook your own meals

Dining in fancy restaurants three times a day is clearly going to bust your budget, so it pays to pick and choose when you eat out. Buying your own groceries and cooking for yourself is by far the most effective way of saving money on food while traveling. This is another reason why hotels are a less cost-effective option than Airbnb, couchsurfing, or camping, as they generally do not provide a kitchen.

Find cheap restaurants

With a little bit of Googling, you can find fantastic cheap restaurants in virtually any part of the U.S. These can be fast food restaurants, diners, or chain restaurants that offer good value for their menu prices. You can also find special offers like weekly deals, kids-eat-free discounts, or offers on the restaurant's app to cut down the total even more. Find free or affordable activities

There's so much to see and do across the 50 states that it would be a real shame to miss out because of a lack of funds. However, there are fun, free attractions throughout the country if you know where to look.

Google, Google, Google

Search for the location you're headed to with the key term, "free things to do in" and the results will most likely turn up numerous offers. Not everything will be your bag, but you'll certainly come across a few gems no matter where you are. Buy a National Parks pass

If you're a nature lover, your travels across the U.S. will likely include visiting a National Park or two. If the ones you plan to visit charge entrance fees totaling more than $80, then purchasing a National Parks pass is going to save you money. Consider a city pass

Many of the larger cities within the U.S. offer a city pass that gives you access to discounts across the most popular attractions and sometimes even entitles you to free use of the public transportation systems. Keep transportation costs to a minimum

When you're traveling across America on the cheap, it's important to figure out the best method of transportation to take you to your desired locations.

Drive

There are numerous ways to get around, and much of it depends on your route, but generally driving works out to be the cheapest, especially compared to flights or trains. Before you leave, however, make sure you get the car inspected to ensure it won't break down in the middle of nowhere.

You'll have to budget for gas, and these costs can add up quickly, especially in an area where gas prices are high. To cash in on this common budget buster, use a credit card that offers cash-back or bonus points for gas. Rent a car

Another option is to rent a car for your cross-country vacation. By renting, you can guarantee that the car is going to run well, and you can also choose a fuel-efficient model, reducing your gas costs. 20 Ways to Make Family Camping Easy

I like camping with my kids, but I don't like working hard at it. I try to keep the whole trip easy, from the planning, to the packing, to the sitting around the campfire. Of course, there are always trade-offs; you can spend more time preparing at home and put in less effort while on the trip, or vice versa. I like to find that sweet spot where work is minimized at every stage. Most of that has to do with relaxing some of the standards I adhere to back in civilization. Here's how I make family camping a cinch, and how you can, too!

1. Camp locally

When I was a kid, some of my happiest camping memories were made at a place in central Texas called Jellystone Park, less than an hour's drive from my house. In the mornings, my dad would drive to work, while my mom, brother, and I made jars of colored sand and took turns going down the waterslide at the pool.

An eight-hour drive to a national park might be what you dream of when planning summer camping, but if your family is new at it, start with a state park or a private campground within an hour or two of home. This way, you'll be able to make a quick getaway if there's a storm or someone gets sick. You can even run home if you forget something. And if one parent can't take the whole time off work, you can do like my dad did and head to the office from the campground. (See also: Camping for a Week Is Only $160 at These National Parks)

2. Camp near a town

Some families strap on backpacks and hike miles into the woods before setting up camp. That's admirable, but that ain't my family, at least at this point in our lives. Some of our most enjoyable camping trips have been on the outskirts of small towns, where we could walk or take a short drive to the store to stock up on necessities. This way, you won't have to plan all your meals in advance, and you don't have to bring as many coolers or as much ice, because you can buy a day's worth of groceries at a time.

3. Choose an easy campground and campsite

National forest campgrounds are cheap and often easy to book. It's even possible to camp in the wilderness, find your own water source, and just dig a hole for your bathroom needs. But if you have young children and little appetite for roughing it, look for a campground with an on-site store, showers, laundry, and even a pool or an indoor activity room. Kampgrounds of America (KOA) offers hundreds of private campground options that often provide these types of amenities. They cost a little more than public campgrounds, but KOAs delight my kids with their pancake breakfasts and mini-golf courses.

Another thing to keep an eye out for is whether you get to park right by your campsite or you have to carry your belongings from a parking lot to your site. If you have big kids this may not be a problem, but with toddlers or babies, it can be tough to ferry gear back and forth while keeping track of the little ones.

Once the campground is chosen, you're not done. Study the campground map. (ReserveAmerica has maps for state parks and some other camping areas.) I like to pick sites near enough to the bathrooms that my kids can visit them alone. If water spigots or electric outlets are only available at some sites, I get one of those.

On the flip side, if there is a lazy river or pond in the campground, you want to be far away from that because that's where the mosquitoes will be. (See also: 10 Simple All Natural Bug and Mosquito Repellents)

4. Lower your beauty standards

We don't pack that much in the way of beauty and hygiene products. A hairbrush and toothbrush for each kid, some toothpaste and hand towels to share, a beach/shower towel for each person, some soap and deodorant, and we're good to go. The most important personal care products you will bring are your sunscreen and bug spray.

I don't bring stuff like shampoo, conditioner, makeup, or razors because I greatly lower my beauty standards in the woods. Showering or bathing every other day might be a firm rule at home, but while camping, I'm fine with my kids going the whole week without a shower if they want. I do, however, try to keep them brushing their teeth twice a day while camping. That has to do with health, not necessarily beauty.

5. Load up on baby wipes

Even if you no longer have babies, these things are clutch for camping. If you don't have access to a shower, baby wipes will be your hygiene go-to. Even at campgrounds with showers, wipes can come in handy for cleaning kids' grubby hands before a snack without hiking to the bathrooms. And if anyone gets car sick on the way there, you're ready for cleanup.

6. Bring all kinds of lighting

It's important to have a light source that doesn't need to be handheld. We have some tabletop lanterns with handles that can be hung inside the tent or from a clothesline as needed. Other handy lights are headlights and small LED flashlights that can be slipped into pockets. These tend to disappear as a trip goes on, so buy lots of inexpensive lights and scatter them everywhere. Glow stick bracelets or necklaces are also an affordable way to keep track of your kids in the dark.

7. Don't skimp on sleeping arrangements

After trying a number of camping products, I have become resigned to the fact that I was not built to rough it when it comes to sleeping. I can easily go a week without makeup, but I'm not happy if I try to sleep on a foam pad on the ground.

Last summer, my family bought a big Aerobed, and we used the electrical outlet in our car to blow it up. I slept like a baby, and will bring it on every camping trip from now on. The only other thing that has given me serious comfort during camping is a hammock — which is a lot cheaper and easier to pack, if you don't get too cold at night. 8. Bring easy activities

My kids spend a lot of time playing in the woods and making up games involving their favorite trees, but everyone should have a book with them for quiet times, and bringing a board game is always a good idea.

You can certainly implement a no-gadget rule, but if one of your kids is driving you crazy, you could always give them some tablet time alone in the tent or car.

9. Pack firemaking tools

I am a Girl Scout leader and I know how to construct a killer fire with a single match, but I'm also not above starting with a Duraflame log if I don't feel like working at it. A box of long stick matches is also helpful.

10. Bring all the baby gear you need

If you're camping with a baby, you already get a medal. You don't need to rough it by going without the things you rely on at home to keep baby safe and happy. I'm not saying you have to bring all 1,000 pieces of baby equipment in your house, but if you think you might need something and you have room in the car, don't deny yourself.

Bringing a portable playpen could literally be a lifesaver, because an air mattress is not a safe surface for a baby to share. When we camped with our babies, I really appreciated having a safe place to stash the baby when I was cooking. Some portable playpens even have changing table attachments, which is great because no one really wants you to change the baby on the picnic table.

11. Bring a huge tent

You'll already be dealing with more togetherness than anyone is used to while on a family trip. Don't feel bad about getting a huge tent so that sleeping bags don't have to be crowded up against each other. Or if the kids want their own tent, you can bring a small one just for them and let them set it up themselves.

Bonus: You won't have to step over their mess in your own tent.

12. Pack with clear tubs

Clear plastic storage containers allow you to see everything you brought without having to unpack everything. They will keep everything dry and if the containers have a good latch, they’ll prevent animals from getting into anything. You can even stack them to make a temporary work surface at the campsite.

When you're done with your trip, store your camping supplies in the same tubs, labeled, to make packing for the next trip a breeze. (See also: The 9 Best Storage Products as Recommended by Organization Pros)

13. Consider renting a specialty vehicle

The closest my family has gotten to renting an RV for camping is renting a Jucy — a minivan converted for camping use — and we loved it so much that the kids are begging to do it again this summer. The beauty of a converted van is that it drives like an ordinary passenger vehicle, but it has a little kitchen in the back with a mini-fridge, sink, drawers, and a stove. These things come with all your silverware and dishes. You also have a pop-up tent with a padded floor on the roof, allowing you to go camping with very little preparation.

The Jucy made days at the beach during our trip a breeze, since we had cold food waiting for us in our fridge in the parking lot. I also loved stopping at a grocery store and loading my purchases directly into the fridge in the back of the van. (See also: The Easiest Ways to Save on Your Next RV Camping Trip)

14. Arrive before dark

Last summer, my family went on a camping trip and it was lovely — except the first night, when we arrived after sundown and struggled to put up two large tents on an unfamiliar, irregularly-shaped site.

When you're on a weekend trip, it can be tempting to leave after work on a Friday to get the most camping time in, but if there's a chance that traffic or a delayed start might land you there after dark, think twice.

You should also stop for a meal on the way to the site, so you don't have to worry about cooking while also setting up the tents the moment you arrive.

15. Make your kids help

After a long drive, your kids will want to run around and play. Let them do this, but only for five minutes. Then put them to work. Everyone above the age of infant should have a job when you pull into the campsite. Little kids can set up their own camp chairs and hold onto the bag of stakes while the tent is going up. At ages eight, 11, and 14, my kids can now set up the tent with little adult help.

16. Put up clothes lines

Having somewhere off the ground to hang everything, from damp towels to clothing to sleeping bags that need airing out, is really handy. It's also a great place to clip a lantern after dark to add more lighting to your campsite.

17. Don't try to be a fancy chef

I like to keep camping meals really simple. At home, we make pancakes from scratch, but at the campground, I've been known to bring the kind of pancakes you spray out of a can. I get precooked meats wherever possible because I've experienced the kind of mess you can make if a package of raw ground beef leaks in a cooler. And canned soup and boxed macaroni and cheese are lunchtime favorites.

Simple also means fewer dishes to wash. I confess that I resort to a lot of individual packaging when camping. I've purchased those individual boxes of cereal, which the kids love, and cases of granola bars and canned sparkling water are my best friends.

If you want to avoid waste, there are a lot of ways to prepackage things using upcycling. Don't want to buy ready-made pancake batter? You can make it at home and package it in a ketchup bottle for the same ease with less waste. Instead of individually packaged granola bars, you can make granola at home and store it in an empty coffee creamer bottle for easy snacking.

Pre-measuring ingredients such as flour, spices, etc., allows you to both throw together meals more easily and pack less, since you only bring as much as you need of each ingredient.

Or you can go all out at home and cook the whole dish, then freeze it to reheat at the campground. My mom would often make a big pot of chili or spaghetti sauce before we went camping. 18. Bring your cooking gadgets — or not

If you like to pack less, try to get a campsite with a grill or a grate that goes down over the fire and bring a bag of charcoal. On one trip last summer when we forgot to pack our camp stove, we managed to cook all kinds of meals, including bratwurst, eggs, and grilled cheese, right over the fire with little hassle.

But if you have a campsite with electrical hookups — or even a converter to plug into your car for electricity — you can use all your gadgets to make cooking easier at the campground. 19. Try to get everything dry before packing up

Sweep or use a portable vacuum cleaner on the inside of the tent and wipe any dew off the sides before packing it up. If you can't get it clean and dry — like if it's pouring out during your departure — you'll have to set the tent up again in your yard when you get home in order to prevent mold from forming. To make your next trip easy, double check for moisture or any odors in the bins, your tent bag, and sleeping bags before storing them.

For me, the exception to this is dishes. Although I like to keep a dedicated bin of cooking utensils and dishes for camping, I do run them through the dishwasher when I get home before repacking them. I wash the dishes at camp before heading home, but I don't pay too much attention to how they get thrown in the bin since I know I'll be redoing it in the comfort of my kitchen.

20. Keep all your camping gear in the same place

Stack all those clear bins full of clean, dry, ready-to-go camping gear in the same area of your garage or crawl space, so that next time, you can throw them in the car and go. If you need to replace or repair something, do it now instead of putting it off until you're getting ready for your next trip. If you make a habit of having everything ready before you store it, you won't have to waste time going through everything before the next trip.

Should You Go on Vacation While You're in Debt?

When you're struggling to make ends meet and working to pay off debt, you may be inclined to skip the summer vacation. It just doesn't seem sensible to take a trip when you're trying to be diligent about saving.

But taking a vacation isn't impossible, even for the most debt-ridden among us. In fact, getting away may just be the thing you need. Here are some reasons why a vacation shouldn't be out of the question, even if you're working to pay off debt.

You can keep it short and close to home

A vacation doesn't have to involve a three-week European tour. While that's something you'd love to do one day, it may not be in the cards right now. And that's OK. A short trip of just a few days can often have the same positive impact on your spirit and mood. Consider a three-day drive down the coast, or a long weekend at a beach house. Maybe even just a few days backpacking will do the trick. I have found that trips of four or five days can be just long enough to disconnect and recharge, but short enough to keep costs at a minimum. You can rough it

A pup tent and a bedroll is far cheaper than a five-star hotel. Camping's not for everyone, but if you love the outdoors, you can enjoy a wonderful vacation and truly get away. There are many National Parks that offer a low or even no entry fee, with sightseeing that is second to none. And if you have kids, it gets them off the electronics. Take a hike in the Smoky Mountains. Go canoeing on the Buffalo National River. These can be enormously fun and relaxing trips that will hardly cost you a dime. You can share the cost with friends and relatives

No one likes a moocher, but you can save some serious coin by teaming up with friends and relatives. Hotels rates are based on double occupancy, so fill that room! Or consider renting out a house with a large group and splitting the cost. A weeklong rental in the Outer Banks of North Carolina may seem pricey, but not when it's split eight ways. A vacation can bring you mental clarity

One of the most important reasons to take a vacation is that it can allow you to get away from the day-to-day stresses of life and reflect on the bigger picture. If you can slow down for a few days, you may be able to think more clearly about your financial situation and your career goals. While on vacation, you may gain some understanding of why you are in debt to begin with. You might take time to re-evaluate your spending priorities. You may be able to recharge and decide to go after that higher paying job. It's hard when you are in the thick of things to make big changes to improve your life, but vacation can give you the fresh perspective you need.

A break from budgeting can be helpful

Getting out of debt requires strict financial discipline. You need to watch every penny that comes in and out, and this can be enormously stressful. It can be frustrating and depressing to constantly deny yourself things you want and to feel like you need to justify every dollar you spend. At a certain point, you just can't take it anymore, and you end up blowing through your budget or making irresponsible purchases. Taking a vacation can help. You don't need to go away for too long or spend too much, but giving yourself a break from the drudgery of saving money will make you hate it less. Vacations can motivate your debt payoff

Who among us hasn't gone on vacation and found themselves wishing they could live like that all the time? A long weekend trip to Napa Valley might leave you wishing you could chuck it all and buy a vineyard. A few days laying on a beach in Florida can have you asking your boss if you can work remotely from Fort Lauderdale. A vacation can help you dream, and inspire you to make changes to improve your life. You may come to realize that it's the debt that's holding you back from achieving your dreams. If you leave a vacation saying, "I wish we could do this more often," perhaps you'll work harder to pay off debt, save and earn more money, and make it happen.

It's better to spend money on experiences than things

Even when you're working to pay off debt, you're still going to be setting aside some money for things you enjoy. But there's a lot of evidence that paying for physical items isn't nearly as satisfying as spending money on experiences. In other words, forget the new flat-screen TV and go kite surfing instead. Experiences are more likely than possessions to contribute to your relationships, define your purpose and passions, and are generally more memorable. 9. Turkey

Turkey is a fascinating country with a diverse culture that arises from its remarkable history. Straddling two continents, Asia and Europe, its capital Istanbul has one foot in each.

1. Cooler

One of the best ways to save money on a road trip is to cut down on dining out. Though you might find some reasonably priced eateries along the way, none of them are likely to beat the price of preparing cheap meals for yourself. In order to do this effectively, you'll need a way to keep your perishable groceries cold.

Obviously you're not going to be able to pack things like vegetables and meat and expect them to last for the entire journey. But a cooler does allow you to pick things up along the way and keep them fresh for a short time as you go. 2. Water filter

You're going to need to stay hydrated on your journey, and buying drinks at gas stations or stores will quickly add up. There are various products that filter contaminants out of the water so it's safe to drink. 3. Basic camping gear

Here are several clever ways to monetize your outdoor space.

Build a tiny rental house

Due to the housing crunch in major metropolitan areas, cities around the United States are relaxing zoning codes or creating new housing laws to deal with the shortage of rental properties. In Los Angeles, it is now legal to turn your garage into an apartment or build a "granny flat" in your backyard. Given that the average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles in July 2017 was $2,209, according to Rent Jungle, converting an existing outdoor building into a living space, or even building one from scratch, is a real estate investment worth consideration.

Turn your property into a private campground

But even if you don't have a prefab shelter, don't let that stop you. If you live close to a natural wonder, a killer surf break, or a unique trailhead, you can rent out your backyard as a private campground to backpackers and glampers via Hip Camp.

I have a gigantic Mission fig tree in my backyard. Although I personally hate figs, I love this tree. Every year, I make several hundred dollars selling ripe figs and my award-winning fig jam to my neighbors, from the comfort of my front porch. People will pay a premium for organic, seasonal produce, especially rare varieties that are hard to find in stores.

Sell your trees

My neighbor just chopped down the 70-year-old Canary Island date palm tree in his front yard because he was tired of cleaning up palm fronds. Alas, he could have saved himself the hard work and made hundreds of dollars selling this tree to a commercial landscaper. Before you chop mature trees, check with your local arborist about your tree's potential resale value.

Raise bees or rent your yard to a beekeeper

As a backyard beekeeper, I am on track to make about $4,000 this year selling honey to my urban neighbors and selling bees to local farmers. And, because Los Angeles limits me to keeping just two hives on my property, I am always on the hunt for people willing to keep two hives on their property in exchange for a percentage of the honey harvest.

Keep city chickens

In an effort to keep food waste out of the landfill, the city of Austin, Texas is offering a $75 rebate to Austinites who keep backyard chickens.

Beyond the green street cred you will gain from chicken-based recycling, raising your own chickens comes with a host of benefits. The chickens can eat your food scraps and create healthy soil, all while giving you free eggs. That said, be sure to do the math before investing in a backyard chicken empire. In urban areas like Los Angeles, where fresh, organic chickens sell for $20 and no one blinks an eye at paying $1 per backyard egg, it's easier to make money raising chickens than in some other places. Check your local poultry economy to accurately assess your return on investment.

Grow vegetable seedlings

Lora, my gardener, discovered that she could make more profit growing and selling heirloom vegetable seedlings (with less effort) than she could by growing landscaping plants. Heirloom vegetable seeds cost a few bucks per package, but she sells seedlings for $1 each at her the local farmers market a — 1,400 percent markup!

Sell your garden space or expertise

Most community gardens are on the lottery system. Only a fraction of the people who want to grow their own food have access to arable land. If you have space to spare in your backyard, try renting out your land to local greenthumbs.

If you're creative with your own garden and landscaping, you might be able to market that expertise. My friend Judy accidentally launched her career as a garden designer after fixing up her own backyard.

Offer your yard as a wedding and party venue

Is your garden or farmland picturesque? Rustic weddings are all the rage these days. Connect with local wedding and event planners in your area to find out how much you can make renting out your pristine lawn or barn.

Accommodations make up the biggest part of most travel budgets. Even if you opt to stay in the cheapest of places, it can still be a real drain on your finances. 1. Work in a hostel

Most hostels employ a mixture of permanent, long-term staff and temporary, short-term volunteers on a work-to-stay arrangement. These volunteers usually do a variety of work, ranging from reception duties and cleaning, to bartending and decorating. Often, you'll be required to work for just three or four hours a day so you still get plenty of time to explore. Just make sure you agree to the terms before you start. In exchange for your labor, you'll get a bed and often some food and drinks.

2. Housesit

Opportunities to housesit are available all over the world, usually for people who want someone to look after their pets while they are on vacation. The arrangement means that you get to stay in a whole house or apartment and enjoy the home comforts that come with it. Many websites, including Mind My House and Trusted Housesitters, act as agents between the homeowners and potential sitters. Sometimes you have to pay a small fee to join. 3. Work exchanges

In return for free accommodations, travelers can offer their time and expertise to work within a small organization or even a family home. One thing to keep in mind is that you will usually be working four to six hours a day, sometimes six days a week. If you're doing manual labor you may be too tired to sightsee in your downtime, so you may want to plan for doing that before or after your work exchange. 4. Couchsurf

This is better for short stays of a few days or less.

5. House swap

This is a really simple premise that involves swapping houses with someone who lives in a location that you want to visit. Sites such as Home Exchange allow you to search for situations worldwide. It's the perfect way to get free accommodations while ensuring that your home is looked after while you're away. Obviously it requires you to have a property in the first place, and as such, it is particularly good for families who own their houses and want a home to vacation in. 6. Volunteer

Lots of charitable organizations offer free room and board in exchange for your services in helping with their activities. Opportunities range from teaching English to helping build schools in places that need them. 7. Camp

13. Use your connections

Camping in a recreational vehicle can be a great way to see the country. You get to experience the great outdoors at campsites in some of the most beautiful areas at a comfort level you just can't get with tent camping. And while you'll pay more to travel in an RV than you would to camp in a tent, there are ways to pare costs down.

RV camping costs

The biggest expense with RV camping is the vehicle itself. Buying an RV isn't cheap, yet there are numerous ways to save on the purchase. For starters, you'll spend less if you purchase a smaller travel trailer or fifth wheel than if you splurge for a larger trailer that sleeps nine or 10.

And if you're willing to buy used, you'll score considerable savings there, too. Just like cars, brand new RVs depreciate at a rapid pace.

Of course, you could always just rent an RV when you need one. Through a website like GoRVing.com, you can search for and compare prices for RV rentals of all sizes, many of which cost less than $1,000 per week.

According to Kevin Broom, spokesman for GoRVing.com, there are additional costs to consider on top of renting or owning an RV. For starters, you'll need to pay for fuel. You'll also need to pay for "amenity kits" that include pots and pans or bedding, unless you want to bring your own. On top of those expenses, you'll need to pay for food and entertainment, just like you would with any trip.

From there, where you take your RV can play a huge role in how much you'll pay. "You can choose to stay in different types of campgrounds — ranging from rustic to luxurious," says Broom.

Some campgrounds are filled with amenities such as jumping pillows, zip lines, pools, fishing ponds, and scheduled activities like gem mining, scavenger hunts, nature hikes, and pancake breakfasts. Some are even located near tourist attractions such as amusement parks, so you can have the best of both worlds: amusement park during the day and a wonderful campground at night. Saving on RV campsites

If you want to save money, you may need to think outside the box. Why? Because campgrounds with more amenities tend to cost more. It pays to look beyond the highly advertised campgrounds to some alternative options. Here are some of the most affordable places to camp.

State parks

Although options vary dramatically from state to state, state parks offer one of the most affordable ways to camp. Many states offer their own websites or online portals that make researching and reserving camp space easy. You can also use a website like Reserve America to look for inexpensive state camping resources in your area.

You'll pay more or less for your campsite depending on the amenities you select. If you want to bring your RV to a "primitive" camping site without electricity and water, you'll pay a lot less. Sites that feature a "full hookup," on the other hand, tend to cost more.

Still, state parks can make camping affordable. At Brown County State Park in Indiana, for example, you can get a full hookup campsite for just $23 per night during summer. At state parks in Colorado, full hookup sites start at just $28 per night. And at Florida's Big Lagoon State Park, nightly rates for an electric campsite start at just $20. Explore state park options in your area to find the best deal.

National parks

National parks offer another smart option for campers and RV enthusiasts looking to save. While national parks don't necessarily have the amenities of luxury campgrounds, they do offer a closeness to nature that is harder to find elsewhere.

And, depending on the national park, camping costs can be downright cheap. The downside to bringing an RV to a national park is that sites with full hookups are rarely available.

The U.S. National Park Service website makes it easy to compare costs for camping on federal lands. Use the "find a campground" tool to search for national parks with camping space in your area or anywhere you want to take your RV.

At glorious Glacier National Park, for example, you can book nonelectric and electric camping sites for as little as $20 per night. At Crater Lake National Park in Oregon, you can book a no-hookup site for just $31 per night.

Small, "no-frills" campgrounds

Another way to save money when traveling in an RV is to look for smaller, "no frills" campgrounds. There are plenty of options all around the country, but you'll need to search and compare prices to find the right one.

KOA campgrounds are a good place to begin your search. KOA offers three different types of camping experiences to fit anyone's budget — KOA Journey campgrounds located mostly near highways, KOA Holiday camps with more amenities for families, and KOA Resorts, which feature on-site activities, food, and entertainment. Prices for the more affordable Journey campgrounds vary dramatically based on location and amenities. You can book a week at the Grand Canyon/Williams Campground in Arizona with full hookups for $411 per week in September, for example. Or, stay in a lower demand area such as Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where you can book a whole week with full hookups for $372.

Shop around before you book

According to Broom, the best step for families seeking cheap camping is to shop around and compare lots of different options. While you search, also remember the golden rule of camping: The more amenities or "perks" a campground has, the higher the nightly rates.

And, if you're facing sticker shock, keep in mind that RV camping is just a lot more expensive than tent camping in general. Not only do you need a larger site when you have an RV, but you'll always pay more to hook up to electricity and water. The larger your RV, the more these charges typically cost.

At the end of the day, RV camping can be as cheap or as expensive as you make it. The best way to keep costs under control is to choose your RV wisely, pick your camping stops carefully, and plan ahead.

1. Canada

Canada is an incredible destination for nature lovers. With a population of 35 million people spread over a vast 3.85 million square miles spanning from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and north to the Arctic Ocean, opportunities for outdoor recreation in untouched wilderness areas abound.

Plus, as a part of the country's celebration of its 150th birthday, this year you can take advantage of the fact that all national parks in Canada are free with the 2017 Discovery Pass. With more than 40 national parks throughout the country, there is plenty of outdoor exploration to be done in expansive forests, tundra, and mountainous regions.

Canada's well-known highlights such as Vancouver Island, Banff National Park, and the Whistler Blackcomb ski resort are well worth a visit. But you should also consider some lesser-known gems, like going on a polar bear and narwhal safari in the far northern province of Nunavut.

Highlights in the east of the country include Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Highlands, where you can take in spectacular coastal views and may even glimpse minke or pilot whales breaking offshore. In the winter months, you can ski in Quebec, north of Montreal.

Head to the Great Lakes region for an epic canoe or kayak trip in the warmer months. Some of the diverse wildlife you could see along the way may include moose, bears, and loons, just to name a few.

As an added budget bonus, the U.S. dollar currently trades around 40 percent better than it did five years ago, so Americans can save some serious money on a trip to our great northern neighbor.

2. Kyrgyzstan

Between its rugged mountain ranges, extensive pasture lands, and high-altitude lakes, this rural country has no shortage of outdoor activities. Seminomadic peoples still live in the mountains here, with yurts dotting many mountainsides.

Landing in Bishkek, the country's capital, you can head to Issyk-Kul, the world's second largest alpine lake, which is located at the foot of the Tian Shan Mountains. The area is a great base for an outdoors-oriented vacation, with swimming, hiking, camping, and trekking all available.

Other trekking destinations include Lake Song Kol and Lenin Peak on the border with Tajikistan. For those who aren't interested in walking the whole way, horse treks in Kyrgyzstan are a fun way to get around.

Kyrgyzstan is an affordable destination overall. We calculate the cost of traveling there at $63 per day for two people sharing accommodations. Plus, you won't have to add visa fees to your travel budget, since no visa is required for Americans visiting for up to 60 days.

Discover Kyrgyzstan, the government's official tourism arm, is currently planning new sustainable tourism options around Issyk-Kul and hiking opportunities in the Jyrgalan region, so it's likely that the country will soon be on the radar of all outdoor enthusiasts.

3. Nepal

Nepal is an internationally renowned destination for adventurers, boasting the famous Everest and Annapurna peaks, and lesser-known areas for trekking, such as the Langtang region north of the capital city, Kathmandu. While summiting Everest is a highly technical and expensive undertaking, there are many other treks in the country that are accessible to hikers of nearly all levels.

Planning a trek to a mountain base camp is one good option, enabling you to hike in the vicinity of the world's greatest peaks without spending tens of thousands of dollars to summit them. These are still challenging hikes that should not be underestimated, but with training and proper preparation, they are certainly manageable.

Most hikes can be easily planned out of Kathmandu, the country's vibrant and busy urban center. Here you can acquire the required permits for your trek, which usually cost around 2,000 Nepali rupees, or about $20. Farther west, the charming tourist town of Pokhara is a common base for travelers preparing to do the popular Annapurna circuit trek.

Not only does Nepal boast stunning landscapes, but it's also a very affordable place to travel, with cheap transportation and meals costing as little as $1. Lonely Planet estimates you can travel for as little as $30 a day, including budget accommodations, two meals, and a trekking porter/guide. A midrange organized trek costs $60–$80 per day.

4. Chile

Chile is a country of abundant natural beauty, from its extensive coastline to the impressive mountains of Patagonia — a breathtaking trekking region at the southern end of Chile and Argentina.

Torres del Paine National Park, in the heart of Chilean Patagonia, is replete with glaciers and crystal clear mountain lakes. You'll want to plan a trip between mid-September and early May, which are the southern hemisphere's warmer months.

Overall, Patagonia is not a budget destination, but it is quite possible to do one of the famous treks in Torres del Paine without breaking the bank. The entrance fee is around $30, but if you plan to do the W Trek (four days) or the O Trek (around eight days), this fee is minimal given the amount of time you'll be spending in the park.

There are also numerous free campsites in the park that can help you save money as well. Pack your own food, stay in as many free campsites as you can, and you can end the entire O Trek in Patagonia spending very little. Even if you do have to pay for campsites, they're only around $15 per person, so it's pretty affordable accommodations!

Unless you have a lot of time for a road trip, you'll want to fly into the Patagonian towns of Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales. Be sure to reserve your flight far ahead — Travel and Leisure recommends booking six months in advance — to ensure you get a seat on one of these in-demand flights.

5. Thailand

Long known as a budget traveler's paradise, Thailand was recently rated as one of the world's 20 cheapest countries to visit by The Telegraph newspaper. Lonely Planet estimates travelers here can get by on as little as $29 a day, with delicious street meals costing less than $2 in many cases.

Known for its beautiful beaches, Thailand is actually a fairly diverse outdoor destination. There are many jungle treks in the north of the country where you can explore the country's rich cultural heritage and visit some of the many impressive temples. Most of these treks depart from Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.

For shorter hikes off the beaten path, check out Sri Phang Nga National Park in southern Thailand, which features spectacular waterfalls, abundant wildlife, and huge parasitic rafflesia flowers.

Interested in water activities? Head to islands like Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao, where you can complete your scuba diving certification without breaking the bank. An open water certification costs 9,800 baht (or around $285). There is no need to book ahead, since the island is full of dive shops that offer certifications, and you can comfortably shop around for the best price once you arrive.

If you're not a diver, you can explore the islands by scooter or foot, stopping to snorkel and swim along the way.
