I mean, there are all of the things out there that can smell bad on their own, and then there are all of the things that those terrible-smelling things can touch.

Even worse? A lot of those terrible smells are in your home. But there's some good news — some of the most powerful tools to battle bad smells are already in your house as well. Here are a few common kitchen items that eliminate nasty odors naturally. (See also: 6 Secret Homemade Stain Removers That Kick Butt)

1. Baking Soda

One of those inexpensive, natural wunderkinds, baking soda neutralizes pH levels, effectively cutting through bad smells. Keeping an open box of baking soda in your fridge is an old standard. But you can sprinkle baking soda anywhere you want to remove odors, including:

Trash cans

Shoes

Carpets

Litter boxes

Laundry hampers

Clothing

To clean and deodorize at the same time, scrub surfaces with baking soda mixed with a little bit of water. This is usually what I use to clean my tub.

2. Vinegar

White vinegar can be used to neutralize many of the same smells as baking soda. An open cup of vinegar in the fridge is an alternative to the box of baking soda, or an open cup or bowl of vinegar can be left in a room where you want to eliminate an odor. Vinegar is also an effective cleaner for everything from shower glass to kitchen counters.

Some people dislike removing smells with vinegar because it has a strong smell of its own, but it dissipates soon after use.

3. Oats

As Chris recently wrote in his post about unexpected uses for oats, the heart-healthy grain is also a decent odor-absorber. Leave a bowl of oats out anywhere you want to suck in smells.

4. Coffee Grounds

While it only works if you like the odor of java, unbrewed ground coffee can be used to eliminate smells, especially in things that used to belong to smokers, like cars or furniture.

5. Lemon Juice

You don't need to cover up smells with fake "lemon-fresh" scents to improve odors with lemon. The fruit is especially useful in the kitchen. It's great for neutralizing the smell of the same foods it's often served with, including garlic and fish. Try rubbing lemon juice on your hands after handling garlic, or rubbing half a lemon over the cutting board you just cut fish on.

Reader's Digest also recommends running a few teaspoons of lemon juice with the water though your humidifier to keep it smelling fresh, and tossing a few lemon peels in the garbage disposal will keep it on the up-and-up.

6. Spices

This does more to cover up a bad scent than neutralize it, but if there's a kitchen smell you'd like to cover, you can simmer water on the stovetop with "fall" spices like cinnamon, allspice, and cloves. Similarly, if you bake something that smells delicious, like cookies, that'll help too.

Are there any other common kitchen items you use to neutralize odors? The price tags on these attractively packaged miracles are even more intimidating, with some of them costing as much as a day's salary. After reading reviews and comparisons of these products, I've found that most people see mild improvements in their skin after prolonged use and many times the less expensive products are as effective as the more costly ones.

If you are looking for the benefits of these products without the costs and unrecognizable ingredients, goat milk soap is a great alternative. Goat milk soap is believed to go back as far as ancient Egypt where Cleopatra was thought to have bathed in goat milk. It does not contain harsh ingredients such as alcohol, petroleum, and preservatives. It's also effective in treating psoriasis, eczema, acne, as well as other skin problems and irritations.

Benefits of Goat Milk Soap

Goat milk contains healthy vitamins and nutrients that are very nourishing for your skin. These include vitamins A, C, E, and some B vitamins. It contains amino acids, citric acid, enzymes, unsaturated fatty acids and zinc. In addition, goat milk soap contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid often found in skin rejuvenation products. Alpha hydroxy acid helps get rid of dead skin cells and leaves healthy new cells at the surface. Goats milk also has a low pH — very similar to the pH of your skin. This promotes moisturizing and helps prevent dryness and skin irritations.

Which Soap to Choose

When shopping for goat milk soap, you may be overwhelmed by the many types available. Many brands of goat milk soap are made with all-natural and herbal ingredients. All types have basic ingredients of lye and a combination of carrier oils such as olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, and other more exotic and costly oils. The oils and lye are combined, which cause what is called the saponification process — the process of producing soap.

From this point on, your selection will depend on your individual preferences. Some soaps contain essential oils, which are made from natural herbs. Others have fragrance oils, which are more like a perfume and have no added benefits. You can find goat milk soap with added dyes or completely natural. Some ingredients and their benefits are as follows:

Oatmeal is a soothing exfoliant.

Honey helps to moisturize skin as it attracts water. It's also anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and it speeds healing and cleans wounds. It's great for eczema and acne.

Tea Tree essential oil is antibacterial, anti-microbial, antiseptic, anti-viral, a fungicide and insecticide. Soap that contains Tea Tree oil is good for treating fungus such as athlete's food and toe nail fungus.

Lavender essential oil is great for pain relief from sore and aching muscles, sprains, and back ache. It is also an antiseptic.

Special considerations

People ask if goat milk soap is safe to use during pregnancy. There is conflicting information regarding use of certain essential oils during pregnancy, particularly during the first trimester. Some experts err on the side of caution, advising avoidance of certain essential oils. Although the amount is usually not enough to cause adverse affects when absorbed though the skin, this is a personal decision. Many soaps contain no essential oils and are safe to use during pregnancy.

Another question commonly asked is whether it is safe for children. A plain goat milk soap is safe for children, although no ingredients are added to prevent stinging if it gets in their eyes. If your child tolerates this well, you can go on to try a soap with natural ingredients, such as oatmeal or honey, but with no essential oils. Chamomile and calendula are oils that are especially gentle and soothing to young or sensitive skin. It is wise to use one kind of soap for a period of time before moving on to another to be sure there is no sensitivity to the skin.

Where to Buy

Goat milk soap can be purchased in health food stores, craft fairs, online, and even in supermarkets. (A brick-and-mortar store will generally have fewer kinds of goat milk soap than an online store.) Although some bars are more expensive, you should be able to purchase a bar of soap for around $5.00. Keep in mind that some bars will be crafted into beautiful works of art, while others will be plain chunks of soap. An elaborate appearance doesn't mean that it is a more effective product. Be sure you don't store your goat milk soap in an airtight container but allow the bar to breath to prevent sweating and molding.

Once you try goat milk soap, you may even want to clear out your shelves and replace your many bottles and jars of expensive products with a few bars of this natural — and less expensive — alternative.

Guest Post Blurb:

Terri Donnelly is the owner and crafter behind Beulah Land Soaps. We strive to provide our families with the healthiest products available…what we put in our bodies, and what we put on our bodies. While the naturals industry has done a great job of bringing natural and organic products to the market, the choices can be overwhelming. When it comes to personal care for our families, it's sometimes difficult to make sense of what "natural" really means. Here are 5 things to remember when you go shopping:

1. Understand that terms "natural" and "organic" are different

Although the FDA does not currently regulate natural products, the agency does provide the following definition: "ingredients extracted directly from plants or animal products as opposed to being produced synthetically." The term organic refers to the process by which the ingredients were grown…without the use of toxic or persistent pesticides. An organic product that carries the USDA seal is held to the same standards as organic food products.

2. Know that natural is, to an extent, in the eye of the beholder

There are no government regulations in place to govern natural skincare and bodycare. This leaves the difficult task of self-regulating to individual brands. If something seems to good to be true? It probably is.

3. Seals can help to guide you in the right direction

In the USA, the Natural Products Association has worked over the past two years to establish a natural products certification program. Products that carry the NPA seal must be made up of at least 95% natural ingredients. In Europe, Ecocert is working to establish natural and organic standards for personal care. Products that carry the Ecocert seal must adhere to the organization's strict ingredient guidelines. Whole Foods Markets created a Premium Body Care™ that allows products to carry a premium seal after demonstrating that they adhere to WFM's ingredient restrictions.

4. Look beyond any seal, and read the ingredient listing

Ingredients may be listed by their chemical name, rather than their common name (i.e., Tocopheryl Acetate is Vitamin E). If you don't recognize (or can't pronounce) some of the ingredients, do a little research. Sites such as The Cosmetics Cop and Cosmetics Info can help you figure out what ingredients really are.

5. Make decisions based on your own concerns and comforts

Natural doesn't always mean better for everyone and every product. I have to avoid some natural products because I am allergic to the extracts that are used. It's always wise to test new products on a small patch of skin to make sure that they'll work for you. Never hesitate to talk to your doctor if you're unsure about using certain products/ingredients on children.

A bonus tip: Word of mouth is a great way to share new products! So tell us…what is your favorite natural product?

Guest Post Blurb:

This is a post by Katrina Simeck from our sister blog, Parenting Squad.
