Unfortunately for them (and “yay” for me), the market for this kind of daily deal offering is opening up, resulting in more deals, on more sites, and in more cities.

If glancing at one good buy a day is leaving you wanting for more, check out a few of the attention-worthy sites we mention in our latest My Life Scoop article — all destined to give the original a run for its money.

Living Social

This is perhaps one of the most established of the wannabes giving deals on the same kind of offerings as Groupon. Hair salons, golf packages, food, and entertainment are the core deals to this rapidly expanding site. Living Social has been a front-runner in the female audience, being advertised on many women’s lifestyle sites and Mommy Blogs, and why not? The deals rarely see out, and many of them are extremely family friendly. Mini-golf, anyone?

Hot tip: Feel like seeing the site without dropping a dime? Check the bottom of the deal page for exciting places you can visit in your area. Some won’t cost a thing!

BuyWithMe

If the 24-hour deal makes you feel rushed (and caters to your weakness for making impulsive buys), BuyWithMe may be more your speed. The deals offered on this site usually last seven days, giving you time to chew on the purchase before you decide. While the cities offering deals are limited, they are growing quickly!

Hot tip: Don’t count that deal chicken before it hatches. Unless there is a minimum number of buy-ins for any group deal, it won’t be valid for anyone. Watch the progress of any deal you’re interested in to see if it’s popular enough to succeed. (And definitely don’t make concrete plans around any deal that hasn’t reached its goal.)

8Coupons

Many of the competitors that were researched require an email subscription before they’ll even show you a deal, and worse yet, some of them bait you to enter your email, select a city, and then tell you that your city will be “added soon.” If the idea of giving out your email or cluttering up your inbox for the promise of a deal doesn’t appeal to you, consider the user-friendliness of daily deal aggregates: 8Coupons. Not only does it list all the deals from the top sites (including Groupon, Tippr, BuyWithMe and others), it lets you search via map or zip code.

Hot tip: Some places in this world (like my town of 1,800) will never be on a daily deals site. 8Coupons gives us suburbanites some retail therapy with the sharing of deals at national franchises and small shops in the places we live. They aren’t daily 50% - 90% off bargains, but it sure beats paying full price!

Dying to see the other sites that made our "hot list?" Read about them all at My Life Scoop! Certainly not a plethora, but a handful that serve me well. And one of them is the ability to track down a bargain. Over the years I have become something of a go-to person amongst my friends and relatives. When they’re looking to buy a product or service, they often call me first to see if I know of any deals or special offers. If they can’t find an item, they ask me if I can. Even if something is sold out in 99% of the stores, I can usually track down that 1% that have it.

Do I have secrets? Am I super-lucky? Not really. I have just amassed a set of tools, almost all of them online, that help me find the deals quickly and easily. And now, I’m sharing them with you. They can be a real help when you’re shopping for a last minute item, have a very tight budget, or just hate paying sticker price for anything. (See also: Deep Discounts on Schedule: The Best Days to Shop)

1. Search every Craigslist at the same time

Craigslist revolutionized the way we all shop classified ads (as the newspaper industry quickly found out to its detriment). You post ads for free, search ads for free, contact the seller or buyer directly and do the deal without any hassle. But most people search their local Craigslist, which limits the bargains you can find and the net you can cast when trying to track something very particular down.

A site called allofcraigs.com does away with the local search and puts your query out there across every Craigslist site. I recently purchased something from someone in Los Angeles. No one in my state had what I was looking for. He shipped it quickly to me and was happy to do business out of state. Not everyone is, but most just want to make the sale. Check it out, bookmark it, and use it often.

2. Search every eBay site at the same time

Although eBay has a much broader reach than your local Craigslist site, it still confines searches to the eBay in your country. But why? I have bought many, many items from the UK eBay, especially music and movies, and who knows what else is lurking out there on other eBay sites. So, why not search them all? You may find a better deal, better prices or faster shipping options.

To search every eBay, you first need to have an eBay account. When you are logged in, go to the Advanced Search page. Enter the usual search keywords and other requirements as you normally would in a regular eBay search. But, when you scroll down to the Location field, select "Items available to", then choose "All Countries/Regions" from the drop-down list. When you do your search, you can see items matching your search from every eBay site out there. Nice.

3. Find products locally that are in stock

During peak shopping seasons, like Christmas or Halloween, stores will quickly sell out of the items you want to buy. This happens every year with the “must have toys” and gadgets that people have on their wish lists. I spent months tracking down a Wii for my wife a few years ago, and this tool would have come in handy. It’s a site called Milo.com. You may have heard of it in the news recently because eBay just purchased it for a cool $75 million. Hopefully, the service remains just as good under the new management. All you do is type in the name of the item you’re looking for and you’ll get a list of results showing stores in your area that have it in stock! Saves a lot of calling around and emailing.

4. Use an auction sniper service

There are quite a few of these around, including Bidnip.com, Auctionsniper.com, EZsniper.com and Bidnapper.com. They all work in basically the same way, and it can save you a ton of time and money. Simply input the item number of the auction you’d like to win, the maximum amount you’d like to pay and, the cool part, when you’d like your bid to post. I usually go for 3 seconds. Instead of seeing a bidding war ensue, you can sit back and get on with your life, while the service puts in a last-minute bid for you.

Of course, this is not a guaranteed win. Sometimes, there can be communication issues and the service cannot place the bid in time. Sometimes someone else is using an auction sniper as well. And it you absolutely have to have the item, no questions asked, then relying on an auction sniper is not your best bet. But if you want to grab an item without seeing the price skyrocket over the days (or weeks) then this is for you. It also helps to avoid fake bidding, when people will actually try and inflate the price of the product they’re selling by bidding against you as someone else.

5. Always do an online price comparison

These were all the rage a few years ago, but with the popularity of the Google Shopping tab, and some of the sites mentioned above, people don’t often use the price comparison shoppers any more. That’s a big mistake in my book. Sites like bizrate.com, mysimon.com, nextag.com, and pricegrabber.com have taken a lot of the hard work out of finding great deals. Just put the item in that you want and you’ll see who’s selling it for less. Remember though, always do a total price comparison, quite often shipping and handling can turn a good deal into a bad one, or an average deal into a great one.

6. If you have the technology, compare prices in store

How so? Well, if you have a smart phone you can use it to your advantage. Apps like Redlaser and Shop Savvy allow you to scan the barcodes of products using the built-in camera. They then search the web for that product and return the results, so that you can find the best deal. If that’s not for you, you can always use the internet on your cell phone to do a quick product search on the sites mentioned in part 5. Several stores have computers inside the store that will enable you to search the web and compare prices. And if all else fails and you’re still not sure, call someone who does have access to the web and won’t mind helping you out. Remember, if in doubt, walk out.

7. If there’s a coupon code box, there’s usually a code out there

The coupon box is a double-edged sword to be honest. On the one hand, its presence means that the site accepts coupons. But that also means you an burn a lot of hours trying to find them, when there may not be any valid coupons available at the time. I usually try retailmenot.com whenever I see a coupon box. There is usually a discount code on there for the site I’m buying from. If not, I’ll do a quick hunt online. But if I haven’t found one after five minutes, I drop it and buy without using a coupon. I have learned the hard way, after obsessively searching for hours to find a coupon that gets me a 2% discount, that it’s just not worth the effort if you don’t find a coupon quite quickly. Also, remember to look for printable coupons to use when you shop in store.

8. Always check the daily deals sites

There are way too many to list here, but some of my personal favorites are slickdeals, buxr, dealhack, dealnews, freestufftimes, and our very own Wise Bread deals section. Some of the deals are awesome, but stay focused. Sometimes the deals are so tempting that you buy stuff you really weren’t looking for, and that can get expensive. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Those are my favorites, and they work wonders for me. Do you have any tips to add to the list? Online! We check out some of the best sites for getting both printable and traditional coupons via the web.

Coupons — Just plug in your zip code and see what offers are available to you! In addition to getting printable coupons for cents (and dollars) off cereal, coffee, diapers and more, you can see what restaurants are offering deals in your area. Another nifty feature? Skip the printing and just upload the coupons to your store chain savings card (like Kroger, for example). Take your card with you when you check out and let the cashier scan your card. No need to stuff coupons in your purse or wallet!

RedPlum — Owned by Valassis, the same people that put coupons in your Sunday paper, this site offers printable coupons, articles, freebies, and giveaways. Get even more savings by purchasing a Sunday paper and printing the maximum number of coupons from the website!

Target — This retailer lets you double-dip by taking typical manufacturer’s coupons and special Target store coupons that you can print right from their website! Available for items that wouldn’t normally give you printable coupons from your paper (like broccoli and store brand juice), these can be combined with manufacturer’s coupons and weekly sales or clearance discounts for the most savings.

Smart Source — Another major company that offers paper coupon inserts, Smart Source has taken its gig online! Print higher valued coupons (like $1.00 off or more) and special purchase coupons (savings on new release DVD’s, for example) before they run out.

Valpak — Remember when you used to get that little Valpak envelope in the mail? Another player in the online printable game, this company has become super savvy by giving you the best offers by your location. They still give you the chance to look for savings on plumbing, car washes, and maid service, but by clicking on the “grocery” tab, you can skip all the service offerings and get straight to the savings most likely to be on your shopping list.

Facebook — Now you can save money on milk while you secretly check out your ex-girlfriend’s new beau. Many companies are giving their Facebook fans exclusive savings and freebies just by joining. Check out your favorite freebies sites and Wise Bread’s Daily Deals to see how this social media site can score you free or low-cost coffee creamer, shampoo, and more!

In addition to these sites that give you savings for many brands, some major companies host coupons on their own sites. Two of the largest ones include:

EatBetterAmerica — This site is owned by General Mills, and will offer printable savings on brands like Nature’s Valley, Bisquick, and Yoplait.

PGEveryDaySolutions — A site of Proctor and Gamble (P&G), you’ll find coupons from Febreze, Tide, Crest, and more! (The coupons will be mailed to you!) Sign up for samples, as well.

Think you’re ready to go online and start couponing? There are a few tips you’ll want to keep in mind before you start:

Prep Your Printer — Once you click the “print” or “clip” button on the website, your printer will need to be ready to go. If you’re out of ink or paper, or the printer is offline (or you send it to the wrong one), you’ll miss out, since they rarely prompt you the way a normal document will. Since you only get one or two chances per coupon, be ready!

Know Your Limit — Many coupons can be printed once or twice per household or IP address. A few can be printed time and time again. Know how many you can print, and plan the best savings by taking advantage of multiple purchases.

Update Your Profile — For offers that will be mailed to you, be sure that your profile is updated with the correct address for mailing. If possible, check out your profile before you make your request, since changes might not be able to be made once you hit “submit.”

Printed coupons can be a huge benefit to the savvy shopper, but only if your store takes them. Call ahead to get their coupon policy before you waste money on paper and ink!

Dealista is a collaboration between Wise Bread and Quick and Dirty Tips, the producer of popular podcasts such as Grammar Girl, Money Girl, Winning Investor, and Mighty Mommy.

If you enjoyed these tips you can find more in our show's archive.
ShareThis

Written by Linsey Knerl and published on Wise Bread. Don't believe me? See for yourself. There are no signs this trend is going to slow anytime soon.

But this huge surge in popularity also makes the various social media networks a prime target for scams. While these social networks do a great job of proactively fighting the onslaught of spammers and scammers, occasionally a well-timed attack can slip through the cracks.

Just in the last couple of weeks, both Twitter and Facebook have both had several accounts compromised by viral phishing scams. In general terms, a phishing scam is any attempt to capture or steal personal information from an unknowing victim. In the social media world, this often is the process of trying to capture the username and password of a given social network account.

Most of us are familiar with getting spam messages or half-hearted scamming attempts in our e-mail or on our social media accounts. However, what makes these scams particularly effective is that they often times will be sent by someone that you already know. Once they obtain the login information of just a few initial accounts, scammers will then send out more messages to everyone connected to the compromised accounts. This means even just a couple accounts can quickly snowball into thousands.

Of course, the messages are specifically designed to pull at your curiosity. Here are the sample messages from the most recent attacks:

Twitter:

rofl this you on here? http://videos.twitter.secure-logins01.com

Facebook:

lmao! i cant stop laughing at you in this pic, when did you do this? http://tllg.net/xyzxyz

As you can see, there are a lot of similarities between these two different scams. First, they both reference the fact that some funny has happened in either a picture or a video. This is a very strong and effective pull for the far majority of people to want to know more. Also, both of the messages contain all lower-case lettering, which is common in unformal chatter between online friends.

And the scam has other things working in it's favor. In the example of Twitter given above, the link took you onto an extremely well replicated version of the log-in page. Because Twitter has an open API (meaning it easily allows third parties to develop applications), there are many legitimate and trusted sites which do have you log-in when using them. So many Twitter users don't second guess having to enter their log-in credentials.

So what can YOU do to help avoid all this madness?

Do not use the same password for your e-mail and your social media accounts. Take the time to create a separate, strong password for each of your online accounts. In fact, only the best retouchers could pull it off convincingly. Computers made the process easier; and programs like Adobe Photoshop have "actions" that can make it happen ever quicker and easier. But now, all you need is your digital photo and one Japanese website that can do the conversion in seconds.

As a professional in the ad industry, I'm often required to create visuals for presentations. This weekend, I needed to make a modern photo look at least 70 years old. I searched online for video tutorials that I could use in conjunction with Photoshop, and it looked like it would take about 30 minutes of my time. Then, just before I set about performing the task, I stumbled upon a link that did the job for me in seconds. And when I say that, I don't mean 300 seconds. It's more like 3 seconds.

The site is Japanese, but fortunately it comes with an English translation (look in the top right corner).

You simply open the photo you wish to transform, hit the "convert" button and almost instantly your aged photo will appear on screen. Then you can save it and do whatever you need to do. The site costs nothing, the service costs nothing and the results are very impressive. For something that is as quick as it is, and completely free, I have to say it's one of the best links I have ever found for such a handy tool.

Here are a few before and after photos. I did all three. Judge for yourself it you think it's a good tool. Personally, this one now has a permanent place in my bookmarks folder.

Piggy Bank - New And Aged

Shuttle - New And Aged

My Girls And I - New And Aged

As yet, I don't believe the site has the ability to handle hi-res files, but this is a great start for bloggers, scrapbookers, card makers and journalists. And now your Social Security Number, the lynchpin to you credit score, taxes, government benefits and more, is under attack. It can be guessed, with a staggering degree of accuracy, using simple information you probably have on sites like Facebook and MySpace.

We have all heard the stories about Identity Theft and we all take precautions to be careful with our SSN. In fact, these days I’ll only put it down on a form if I absolutely have to; that includes medical forms that you often have to fill out when you visit a GP or specialist. But that may now be a moot point, because two Carnegie Mellon researchers have basically reverse-engineered the SSN formula to gain access to that most precious and private number.

John Timmer of Arstechnica.com reported yesterday that these two bright sparks used two practices that had been designed to protect the number, and make it fraud-proof, as a way to discover the code from those two simple facts – date of birth, and place of birth; two facts that are on most public profiles.

To know how they did it, you need to know the basic structure of the SSN. As John describes it, it splits into three zones:

The first three digits are based on the state where the SSN was originally assigned, and the next two are what's termed a group number. The last four digits are ostensibly assigned at random. Since the late 1980s, the government has promoted an initiative termed "Enumeration at Birth" that seeks to ensure that SSNs are assigned shortly after birth, which should limit the circumstances under which individuals apply for them later in life (and hence, make fraudulent applications easier to detect).

From there, the article gets pretty heavily into some technical data and statistics that I won’t bore you with here. If you’re interested, read all the details of the algorithm that reconstructs your Social Security Number. But all you really need to know is that if the SSN code has been cracked, or hacked, then it won’t be long before that information gets into the wrong hands.

So, should you be worried, and what can you do?

Well, as John Timmer explains, although some of the SSN digits are relatively easy to obtain, others are more tricky:

Getting the last four digits right was substantially harder. The authors used a standard of getting the whole SSN right within 10 tries, and could only manage that about 0.1 percent of the time even in the later period. Still, small states were somewhat easier—for Delaware in 1996, they had a five percent success rate.

BUT, and this is a big but, it seems as though modern security systems and automated forms DO NOT REQUIRE the whole SSN. As long as it is cross-referenced with the date and place of birth, up to two numbers can be incorrect. John continues:

They often allow several failed verification attempts per IP address before blacklisting it. Given these numbers, the authors estimate that even a moderate-sized botnet of 10,000 machines could successfully obtain identity verifications for younger residents of West Virginia at a rate of 47 a minute.

Think about it: 47 a minute! Considering how prevalent ID theft is around the world, and how sophisticated thieves are becoming, I think this is enough to cause concern for the average US citizen. And as such, it may be time to start taking precautions.

First, see if you can remove your private information, or replace your place and date of birth with something more vague on your social networking sites and other public profiles. That one should be relatively easy, if a little time consuming.

Second, continue to practice good personal security. Shred any important documents that you are throwing out, and don’t leave sensitive data in a place where thieves could easily find it. I know a lot of people throw things in the car and forget about it, but if the car were stolen or broken into, it could be the start of much bigger problems.

Third, keep on top of your credit reports. You are allowed one free each year from each of the three major credit bureaus. DO NOT use freecreditreport.com, they charge. Instead, go to Annual Credit Report here. If you see anything suspicious or just plain wrong, contact the bureau immediately.

Finally, consider some ID theft protection. I use LifeLock because I got a great deal on it, and although not 100% effective, it does cover me if anything should happen. But LifeLock is basically just a method of putting 90-day fraud alerts on your credit reports, which you can do yourself for free. You can find the information for each bureau here:

EXPERIAN

EQUIFAX

TRANSUNION

For further reading, visit the FTC’s site. Because there’s a dirty secret to Craigslist that most people don’t know about it, and the free section gets hit with it most.

As with all services or products used en masse, adaptations arise to evolve the idea. With eBay, it was bid sniping (which is legitimate in my book). With free software trials, product key generators hit the market, turning free trial software into the full-blown product. And now, with Craigslist, there’s something called Auto Flagging Software, and it gives the people who use it a very sly advantage.

Now, it turns out that Auto Flagging Software originally had a good use. The idea was to use it to blast SPAM and ads for sexual services, clearing out the trash from Craigslist and keeping customers safe from bad deals and illicit offers.

But other people saw a use for this software, and it is being used by two distinct sets of Craigslist users.

First, anyone who has competitors on Craigslist (this can be people offering similar services or selling similar products) are using Auto Flagging Software programs to flag the competition, thus giving themselves more of a chance of getting business.

Second are the users who want a particular product and don’t want anyone else to have it. This most often manifests in the free section, where great deals are be had and kind people will often just give away something with inherent value to a needy person.

When the sly Craigslister with Auto Flagging Software spies a real bargain, they pounce. The software does two jobs; it will send an email to the Craigslist poster requesting the item; then, it sends flagging signals to Craigslist about that post using multiple IP addresses. This will automatically trigger the ad to be pulled from the site. And voila, the underhanded Craigslister has eliminated anyone else from responding by pulling the ad, giving him or her the best chance of getting your deal. These pieces of software are most often used by people looking to make a profit be reselling cheap or free items.

I did a little digging round and found several instances of the software (I won’t be posting any links here, for obvious reasons). I also found people requesting custom-built versions of the software for their own nefarious purposes.

So if you do frequent Craigslist, especially as someone who regularly gives products away in the free section, please monitor your post and don’t just give the product away to the first person who responds. It could be that Auto Flagging Software was involved and someone who genuinely needed the product was shut out be someone else just looking to make a quick profit from your generosity.
ShareThis

Written by Paul Michael and published on Wise Bread. Out of every 100 online start-ups, one will become a moderate success.

And then there are sites like parrotsecrets.com. At the time of writing this article, the modest little site has made over $2 million for its founder, and it’s still going strong. This, ladies and gentlemen, is no small feat for any business. But when you consider the start-up costs were about $5000, the founder was 18 years old, still lives in India, and that the site takes minimal maintenance, it’s even more astonishing.

If you go to parrotsecrets you won’t see anything fancy. It’s not a big, bold flash site. It employs the simplest direct response methodology, using one long, scrolling page to hammer home the selling points, again and again, about the incredible eBook all about parrots.

The site’s founder (listed as Nathalie Roberts but in fact a young man...the Betty Crocker of India) did some digging around when he was 18 years old and realized that there was no reliable online information source for parrots. And as Cringley.com reports, he got straight to work:

The owner set out to find a niche in the information economy that could be filled with eBooks as sold here. The first step in the development of Parrotsecrets, then, was to identify the frustration of Parrot owners.

In time it became clear to the entrepreneur that parrots were an untapped market.

Having identified a topic, the founder of Parrotsecrets needed an eBook. The easiest way to do this was to post the requirement on one or more of the many freelancing web sites. Writers bid on the job and the original eBook (note there are now four eBooks in the offer) went for around $2500, deliverable in 30 days.

The Parrotsecrets founder ordered from Amazon.com every book on parrots (deliverable to the winning freelancer) then waited a month for the eBook to appear.

That month was used to buy the domain, design the web site, prepare a Google AdWords campaign, and be ready to be up and running as soon as the eBook was finished.

Simple, right? He saw a gap in the market, did his homework, got together some cash to have an EXPERT (which he clearly wasn’t) write a great book and then set about promoting it.

At $79.95, the eBook isn’t cheap. But as Cringley points out, it’s a small price to pay for parrot owners, who will easily fork over hundreds of dollars for vets bills or speech classes.

And for those of you interested in doing the math, here’s what parrotsecrets is pulling in annually:

The site sells 15-20 eBook sets per day seven days per week. Using the low end of that range is 5,475 copies per year for gross sales of $437,726.25 from a web site that costs less than $10 per month.

Could you live off $400,000 per year? I know I could. And remember, this is a guy who lives in India, where the cost of living is substantially lower than here in Uncle Sam. He’s a relative millionaire and he’s still in his early twenties. Makes you feel somewhat inadequate when you consider all the advantages we have in this country and yet most of us still can’t do what the parrotsecrets owner has done.

There are several lessons to be learned from this amazing story.

First, it’s that you don’t need to be an expert on something to build an online business around it. Contrary to what we’ve all been told, you have sufficient resources these days to have content built by someone else, usually for a fraction of the price that you can get in return (to date, that $2500 eBook has generated millions of dollars).

Second, if you find a niche in the market, you can exploit it and become very successful. If you’re sat there right now thinking “man, I wish there were some decent online information about owning pot-bellied pigs” or something like that, then you may already have your idea.

Third, and most important, is that it’s up to you t make it happen. A great idea is no good if it lives in your head. Get off your butt and do the work. Put in the hours, do your homework, read up on the topic, build a solid foundation. No, you don’t need to be an expert, but you do need to know enough to make the site a success.

Finally, look at the parrotsecrets business model and learn from it. It’s a simple web page and the product is an eBook. There are no manufacturing costs, no products to store and no shipping costs. The whole process is automated and when someone orders an eBook, it is sent in an email (or available as a download) after payment has been received. Quick, clean and simple.

Folks, in this uncertain economic time, there is one thing you can depend on; there are always people out there willing to spend money if there’s a need for the product. Identify the need, build a business around it and keep your start-up costs and maintenance fees low. If you do it correctly, in a few years you could be as successful as a certain young man in India who is right now living in the lap of luxury. And it’s all down to a bird he’s never owned.

Thanks to The Denver Egotist for bringing this to my attention!
