Whether it's the fear of rejection or embarrassment, negotiating is rarely used as a way to save money. Well, I'm here to tell you that if you know what grocery items to look for, and have the proper negotiating strategy in place, it can be successfully done. Here are some items worth negotiating, along with tips to make it happen.

1. Deli and Butcher Counter

Many shoppers are unaware that there exists great opportunities to negotiate a lower price at the deli and butcher counter. Always look for hams and roasts that are less than two pounds in size. These have typically been sliced from larger cuts and the remaining amount is often too small to prep for lunch meat, meaning they are hard to sell by themselves. So, politely ask the employee behind the counter if you can take it off their hands for a slight discount. I typically ask for 20% off and end up with a 10%–15% discount the majority of the time.

2. Fruits and Veggies

The single best way to negotiate a deal on fruit and veggies at the grocery store is to look for slightly damaged items and ask for a small discount. Maybe a bunch of bananas is slightly bruised, but it won't affect your fruit smoothie. Or maybe a head of lettuce is slightly wilted on the outside, but the leaves underneath are just fine. Politely start a conversation with the employee in the produce department, point out the defect, and ask for a slight discount. This always works better if you're buying a large quantity, as the employee will want to keep you happy.

Also, if you do the majority of your shopping at a single grocery store, try to build a relationship with the produce employees. They'll be able to tip you off to great deals, the freshest items, and upcoming sales — and be more willing to lower the price for you, too. (See also: 5 Off-Season Foods That Are Destroying Your Grocery Budget)

3. Wrongly Priced Items

Almost every grocery store has a section dedicated to clearance or marked-down items placed for a quick sale. Without fail, there are always items placed in this section that appear to still be marked at full price. This happened to me recently when I found some expensive K-Cups for my Keurig brewer on the clearance rack that were not marked down. On a hunch, I asked a nearby employee if they were actually on sale. He did a quick price scan and sure enough, they were incorrectly priced at full retail. He did a price adjustment for me, and I walked out of the store with a sweet deal. Now, I make it a habit to always check the clearance rack when I visit the grocery store.

4. Bakery Items

A great way to save money on cupcakes, cakes, and pastries is to look for items that are a day or two from the "sell by" date. Once you find these items, simply ask the employee if they'll be marked down soon, since they're nearing expiration. Instead of spending the time marking them down, often the employee will happily let them go to you now at a discount. If the employee doesn't volunteer an immediate discount, ask about the possibility of you taking them off their hands for 25% off. Keep in mind that, in the end, you're actually doing them a favor as it takes time to mark down these items and they run the risk of having to remove them from the store if unsold.

5. Meats

The biggest key to saving money is to know what day and time your grocery store marks down their meats that are nearing their "sell by" date. Most do it on weekdays before 10 a.m., but just ask and they'll happily tell you. Once you know, shop right after their markdowns and then ask for a quantity discount when buying multiple cuts. Remember, it's only a "sell by" date and not an expiration date. Plus, the cuts are still great for freezing and using later at a big discount.

The key to making this work is to politely ask for a discount when buying at least five or more items that are nearing their "sell by" date. Most butcher counters are happy to clear out these items at an extra 10%–15% off, as they want to get rid of them quickly before they take a loss on them.

6. Cases of Wine

My local grocery store will happily sell a case of wine, typically 12 bottles, for a discount. While I'm not a wine drinker, I've seen several customers get discounts in the 10%–15% off range by purchasing in bulk. The key to your success is to look for wine that may be overstocked, or on sale, as those are the vintages the store probably wants to clear out to make room for new inventory. If your grocery store denies a discount, check specialty stores like BevMo!, Total Wines, or a local beverage retailer. They'll usually happily offer you a case discount.

The keys to negotiating at the grocery store are always to be polite and have a friendly conversation rather than be demanding. Throw in a legitimate reason to ask for that discount, and you stand a great chance of saving money on your next trip.

How do you save money at the grocery store? But it made me think. Is it possible to make your own luck when it comes to frugal living?

I think it is. Here are my best 11 tricks for becoming a frugally lucky person and finding more than your share of deals and freebies. (See also: How to Win Sweepstakes)

1. Be Patient

You know how they say that if you want a dog, you should just wait, because eventually the right dog will come to you? I feel the same way about stuff. It may take years, but eventually, that end table or juice maker you need or want will probably turn up at a bargain price. (See also: 9 Easy Steps to Become More Patient)

This year I decided I wanted a record player. I started looking for them at rummage sales, but never found quite the right one. I considered just buying a new one, but I am way too cheap for that. So I waited. I even bought some brand new Beatles records on clearance and left them sitting on a shelf for the player that I hoped I'd find eventually.

Within a week of buying those records, I saw the perfect record player — sitting on the curb! It was so new it had a USB port, and someone was just throwing it out. I'm using it to play my Beatles records right now, and it sounds great.

Was this luck, or just having the patience to wait it out? Ask yourself this: How many times have you bought something new, only to find a much better deal on it a week later?

2. Be Constantly Vigilant

To a true bargain hunter, walking through a store or even down the street is like playing a video game. You have to always be on the lookout for treasure you can scoop up.

If I have extra time, I will always pop into an unfamiliar store just to see if they might have a clearance shelf. If it turns out to be a store with good deals, it'll be on my list of places to check back often.

3. Be Assertive

It feels awkward to ask for a better deal — whether it's haggling over a used car or simply asking for a markdown on about-to-expire milk — but remember that the worst that anyone will say is "no." I have found that most store employees are happy to help you save money if they can. (See also: How to Negotiate With Confidence)

4. Be Persistent

When I first joined Freecycle, I was able to easily get rid of stuff that had been cluttering up my house, but I didn't find anything I needed. Still, I kept my email subscription active, and I kept watching the offers. Eventually, items came up that interested me — but I wasn't the first to ask for them, and I didn't get them.

I continued to stick with it, and over the years I have gratefully accepted a number of useful items, including a futon, a bike trailer, and, most recently, a new-to-me bicycle.

5. Use a Checklist

When I need something, I go through a number of steps before breaking down and paying full price for it. My checklist looks like this:

Ask for it on Freecycle

Search Craigslist

Compare prices

Search for coupon codes

Shop through Ebates

I rarely buy something without going through my checklist, and when I do, I usually regret it.

6. Stay Up to Date

Just as doctors must constantly read medical journals to keep their knowledge fresh, so must bargain hunters keep up with bargain blogs to know the latest trends. (What? Bargain hunting is a lot like performing surgery, don't you think?)

Besides Wise Bread, I read Money Saving Mom, Mashup Mom, WantNot.net, and Brad's Deals to find out what's new in the bargain world — and simply to find hot deals.

In addition to the field research mentioned in item two, I also interrogate fellow shoppers about their shopping experiences. When a friend rents a car, I want to know if they got a free upgrade, and if so, how. Some friends might be annoyed by questions about prices, but kindred spirits love sharing how they got a deal.

7. Try New Things

Once I had never heard of Groupon or Ebates, and now they are go-to sites in my deal hunting routine.

Of course, the new thing you try won't always work out. When my husband and I were buying our first home back in 2001, we signed up for a new online real estate agency that promised to share its commission with buyers in the form of a 1% rebate. Not only did the company offer substandard service, but it ended up going out of business just before we closed our deal.

My husband was not happy with me for making our first buying experience more difficult in pursuit of a one percent rebate. But in my defense, we did end up finding a great place to buy, and we got the rebate. It just turned out to be a huge hassle.

8. Embrace Serendipity

Many frugal shoppers believe in strictly sticking to a list. I try to enter a store with an open mind. A few months ago I went to Salvation Army in search of a curtain. I didn't find it — on that trip — but I did find a Batman bedspread for my son's bed. Every night when I tuck him in, he thanks me for that bedspread.

9. Be Creative

In the same vein, there are bargains that you have to think up a use for before recognizing them as bargains. My grandmother — a Depression baby — is particularly good at this. Think old tablecloths as Halloween costumes and old tableware as bird feeders. If only I were really crafty I could do much more in this area, but I do what I can. (See also: Repurpose These Kitchen Cast-Offs Into Cool New Things)

10. Be Shameless

A lot of people are embarrassed to pick something up off the curb or out of a trash can, or even buy something second hand. I am not, and I have benefited greatly from this lack of shame. I even dabbled in freeganism for the first time recently, finding some mostly good produce discarded outside my regular grocery store.

Remember George Costanza and the trashcan eclair? When I was a schoolgirl, "garbage picker" was about the worst insult anyone could hurl. But I hope that environmental consciousness, the concept of upcycling, and shows like American Pickers have helped people get over this. If not, that's more treasures for those of us with no shame!

11. Have Fun With It

All the tips above are useless if you don't enjoy the thrill of the bargain hunt. This is not a list of virtues — to be honest, some of these habits make me extremely annoying to my family and friends. If you are strictly looking at a cost/benefit analysis, you may be better off spending your time studying investments or working overtime to earn more money than hunting for bargains.

But if you feel like a million bucks when you discover that one gem that every other shopper passed by? If you love having a good hunting story attached to every piece of decor in your home? Then these tips should help you win more often.

Now go forth and get winning!

What makes you frugally lucky?

This article is from Carrie Kirby of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. In an effort to guide you toward savvy purchases, we dug through the dealnews archives from years past to see what goods are, well, good to buy in April, and what you should hold off on. From early home improvement sales to aggressive tablet prices, here's what's in store this month for the smart shopper. (See also: Shopping Calendar: The Best Time to Buy Anything)

Sail the Seas With Excellent Cruise Deals

Typically, April is a good month to book cruises. But we discovered last month that cruise prices in general have been dropping when compared to last year, likely due to the industry's tumultuous string of recent public disasters. In fact, when compared to similar cruise deals from this time last year, 2012's offers are as much as 11% less. And we have continued to see an increase in the sheer number of cruise deals as well, making it a good time (price-wise) to look into a vacation on the seas.

Keep an Eye on Spring Clothing Sales

The general rule of thumb is to wait about two months after a new line of apparel hits stores before you can cash in on sizable discounts. Many retailers began debuting their spring merchandise in late January and February, so that places April at about the two-month mark for some. Look closely at the discounts, though. A spring clothing sale that takes 30% to 40% off is still a mid-season promotion; you'll want a sale that takes at least 50% off or more, and if you can hold steady for a stacking coupon code, all the better. If you truly want the lowest prices — which of course comes with reduced selection — you'll likely want to wait until May.

Look to Non-Apple Tablets for Aggressive Deals

As most of the world expected, Apple announced its new iPad last month. What many didn't expect, however, was for Apple to then continue to manufacture and sell the iPad 2 at a lower price. This new price point from Apple — although just $100 lower — puts pressure on Apple competitors, especially since we've already seen deals that discount it to as low as $349. As we predicted, non-Apple slate manufacturers will feel compelled to respond aggressively, and as such we've already seen a new all-time low on the Amazon Kindle Fire. Could this be a sign of things to come from other tablets as well?

Get a Jump on Jewelry Deals for Mother's Day

If you're thinking about buying some baubles for Mother's Day, then start looking now. We still find and list deals, coupons, and sales for jewelry in May, but oftentimes we see slightly higher final prices on styles right before the holiday. This is especially true of online jewelry retailers.

Spring Home Improvement Sales Go National

For the past three years, Home Depot has offered its "Black Friday is Back" spring sale, but this year, because of the mild winter weather, the store has not only started it early but — according to CNBC — the promotion has been rolled out nationwide, instead of as a staggered region-by-region schedule. Their spring sale began on March 29, whereas last year we listed it almost a week and a half later. While we wouldn't go so far as to say that the promotion is on par with the shopping holiday that shares its name, the Black Friday sale is a good opportunity to stock up on home improvement items you'll inevitably need. And for once, the sales are available to everyone at the same time, ahead of schedule.

Hold Off on Office Furniture

Some sources praise April as the best month for top office furniture deals, but according to our archives, we've consistently seen either more or better-quality deals in both May and June. The latter, in particular, racks up more Editors' Choice caliber offers, meaning that the styles are at the lowest price point we've seen. Look to OfficeMax, Office Depot, Staples, and Walmart for these offers down the line.

Wait for It to Really Heat Up Before Buying a Grill

It's easy to start dreaming about backyard barbecues once the weather gets warmer, and although the promise of an upcoming season of grilling is enticing, don't jump the gun by purchasing a new grill just yet. Our deal archives suggest that June will see better-quality deals, while other sources promote post-Independence day sales as an excellent opportunity to get discounts on grills and the like.

Big Screen HDTVs Hold Steady, While 3D Trends Cheaper

Although April isn't a big month for TV deals, we don't expect it to be a bad month either. Deals on brand-name 55" TVs haven't changed since the holidays, coming in at exactly $800. Off-brand models on the other hand have actually dropped in price since December, and so far this year they're averaging $590 (which is 14% lower than the best price we saw in 2011). We expect this trend to continue in April, so if you're shopping for a 55" TV, look for deals under $590 (for off-brand sets) and under $800 (for brand-name models). Likewise, name-brand 46" LCD HDTVs were cheaper in February and March of 2012 than they were on Black Friday, with prices averaging $550. (The best deal in November was $598.)

As far as 3D TVs are concerned, February's all-time low of $699 didn't repeat itself in March. But we do expect it to make a return before the summer, so keep a look out for deals on off-brand 55" 3D TVs.

With Laptop Deals, Aim for Big Systems and Skinny Form Factors

Although February's stellar deal on a fully-equipped desktop replacement didn't make a re-appearance in March, average prices in 2012 are still at Black Friday levels. So if you're in need of a laptop, look for deals on fully-loaded desktop replacements (17" or larger, with a minimum of 8GB RAM, a Core i7 CPU, and a 500GB hard drive) at or below $800.

Last month we noticed an influx of deals on ultrabooks and we expect the same for April. In particular, look for deals on the ASUS Zenbook or the Acer Aspire S3 as those are the most discounted ultrabooks we've seen. Price-wise, the former has hit an all-time low of $849 whereas the S3 has reached a low of $749.

Ready to put this information to use? So we've mined the extensive dealnews archives for sales, coupons, and individual products from the past few years to guide you in your quest for the most savvy purchases this month. Here's what we found. (See also: Shopping Calendar: The Best Time to Buy Anything)

A Great Time for Winter Outdoors Gear

Last month, we mentioned what a great time it was to buy winter apparel because of the exceptionally mild season. This theme will continue into March. It also appears that the warmer winter has put a damper on sales at outdoor specialty shops as well — presumably effecting gear for cold weather activities in specific. As Leisure Trends puts it, "outdoor retailers may need to plan for an early spring," which means we may see stronger and earlier discounts on cold weather gear and accessories than usual. If you're looking to gear up for springtime activities though, keep in mind that traditionally, we've seen the highest number of top-shelf offers on outdoors gear in the months of May and June. In either case, look to stores like REI, Altrec, Backwoods, Backcountry, and EMS for sales.

Hold Off on Spring Apparel

It's common knowledge that the best time to buy current season apparel is well after that season has begun. That's why cold weather apparel is such a hot buy right now. But how long should you wait to spring on short sleeves, shorts, and flirty dresses? A good rule of thumb is to wait at least two to three months in order to score the best discounts on seasonal apparel. In the meantime, if you simply must buy something, keep an eye out for a coupon code to at least get a small discount off full price.

Skip the Lingerie

You may think that immediately after the most romantic day of the year, you'll see massive discounts on lingerie. Although we do indeed see some price cuts, ladies would be better served by waiting until this summer to restock on their favorite styles. Around June is when Victoria's Secret unveils its famed Semi-Annual Sale, and last year around that time we saw excellent markdowns from aerie by American Eagle, Frederick's of Hollywood, Macy's, Soma Intimates, and Figleaves. That said, summer deals paled in comparison to the October to December stretch, which saw numerous Editors' Choice offers from many of these same vendors.

Treat Yourself With Chocolate

Again, after a holiday, it's only natural that themed sweets will go on sale. As such, Valentine's Day candy will continue to see discounts this month, if it hasn't already been all snatched up. But, since this holiday in particular puts emphasis on higher end sweets to impress your loved ones, you can especially look to stores like Godiva for tasty ways to treat yourself on a budget.

Say Bon Voyage With Luggage

After a few months cooped up indoors, you may begin feeling the itch to get outside and take on an adventure of two. And if your travel gear is lacking, you're in luck! This time of year is a good time to buy new baggage. Last year, luggage deals began to pick up steam in March, with sales at Walmart, eBags, Macy's, and Sears. Technically, we saw a larger spike in sales during the month of August last year, but there were still many notable offers in March.

Wait Until Black Friday to Upgrade Your Vacuum

While you may be in the mood to consider refreshing your living space with a little spring cleaning, March isn't the best time to go shopping for a new vacuum cleaner. Many resources will tell you that April is in fact the best time to shop for a vacuum, but actually, according to our deals, November is much stronger with numerous top deals available around the Deal Week time frame.

Stock Up on Frozen Foods

Were you aware that March is National Frozen Foods Month? No? Well, it is. And yes, this is largely a marketing ploy to draw attention to the frozen foods industry, but we could still very well see special promotions from different frozen food brands. So it may be time to go couponing! And if you come across a particularly hot deal, you can easily stock up on the long-lasting foodstuffs.

Get a Gym Membership When Temperatures Rise

During the month of March, you're stuck in limbo: It's after the wave of New Year's promos, and before the sales that try to entice you indoors when it's warm enough to exercise outside. Hold out just a little longer on getting a new membership, and you're more likely to encounter better promotions.

Make Way for the 2012 TVs

With the holidays and the Super Bowl now behind us, TV-buying season is officially over. March won't see the same head-turning price points we've been used to (we already saw some slight price upticks in February), but there is some good news at the end of the tunnel. HD Guru reports that Samsung's 2012 CES TVs are slated to enter the market this month, which could mean some surprise discounts on older 2011 models.

3D fans should also take note, last month we listed the first ever third-tier 55" 3D LCD HDTV courtesy of Sigmac. The $699 TV is to date the least-expensive 55" 3D TV we've seen and could help pave the way for even lower-priced name-brand 3D TVs.

Keep Your Eye on Desktop Replacements and Ultrabooks

Last month we informed you of the stellar deals we've been seeing on fully equipped desktop replacements (those with Core i7 CPUs and 8GB of RAM). Well, this month we're back with even better news. Last month we listed the least-expensive premium desktop replacement ever (an HP Pavilion dv7t Quad-Edition Intel Core i7 Quad-Core 2.2GHz 17.3" LED-Backlit Notebook) for an astonishing $550 — the lowest we've seen for any top-of-the-line desktop replacement. The chances of seeing that deal again are slim, but the chances of seeing another great desktop replacement deal are very high. Look for deals at $800 or below.

February also saw a small-but-impressive stream of deals on ultrabooks (we listed six in total) with deals on the ASUS Zenbook and Acer Aspire. Prices on the latter have finally reached the $749 mark, while the highly-coveted Zenbook hit an all-time low of $849.

Ready to put this information to use? Check out our list of the best and worst things to buy in February, which we've compiled after analyzing the extensive dealnews archives full of sales, coupons, and individual products from years past. If you're curious about Presidents' Day sales, gifts for Valentine's Day, or prices on electronics, outerwear, and more, then read on. (See also: Shopping Calendar: The Best Time to Buy Anything)

Valentine's Day Deals Are Predictably Not Great

Since this is the time of year in which jewelry, flowers, and perfume are in their highest in demand, it's not surprising that shoppers probably won't get the best price possible on these items; perfumes, for example, generally see better discounts in late February after Valentine's Day and March. That's because there's less incentive for retailers to offer truly great deals on these items when they're selling so well due to circumstance. Try buying your sweetheart a less routine Valentine's Day gift in a category that's more likely to see a fair discount.

Prepare for Presidents' Day Sales

The best part about a holiday weekend isn't necessarily the day off, but rather the inevitable sales. You can expect quite a few Presidents' Day sales during the 3-day weekend that will take as much as 80% off on a plethora of apparel, as well as tools, bedding, and furniture. Some retailers tend to offer deeper discounts on existing sales, while others will lean towards modest coupons (likely an extra 20% to 30% off) that are applicable sitewide. Look to clothing and department stores for a big Presidents' Day sale push.

Tablet Time

Rumors continue to swirl about the release date of the iPad 3, and many folks believe that it will be announced at the end of February. If that is indeed the case, then we'll likely see immediate markdowns on refurbished iPad 2 units sold by Apple, as well as substantial cuts on new devices from resellers.

Expect Electronics Clearance Sales

We mentioned in our January guide that, as new electronics unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) begin to hit shelves, retailers make room for them by offering discounts on old stock. This effort continues in February, and includes markdowns on electronics like GPS units and audio equipment — the latter of which we've already started to see excellent deals on.

Wait on Digital Cameras

Common logic dictates that we'd similarly see the best deals of the year on digital cameras during the month of February, as retailers clear camera inventory post-CES. However, our deal archives paint a different picture. Although we've seen some excellent bargains during the month of February, these discounts and promotions have paled in comparison to November and December in terms of Editors' Choice-caliber offers. In the past two years, both of these later months have each seen roughly four times as many top deals than February.

An Excellent Time for Outerwear

We mentioned in our January buying guide that winter apparel was beginning to see its greatest discounts of the season, and these sales will continue through February, though typically the selection is less robust. But that might not be the case if you're looking specifically for a winter coat, as the mild season has reportedly left retailers with massive amounts of unsold inventory, therefore making this perhaps one of the best years to get a deal on a late-in-the-season coat. If you've been putting off replacing your tried-and-true wool or down coat, February and March will be excellent months to snag a deal.

An Increase in the Number of Ski Resort Deals

Since snow has been hard to come by this winter, the number of travelers booking trips to ski resort towns has been unusually low. Although numerous locations recently received a fresh dusting of powder, the ski season has been damaged due to mild weather. We've already seen an influx of special skiing discounts on vacations and hotels in ski towns like Keystone, CO, Salt Lake City and Park City, UT, and more, as they try to salvage a weak tourist season.

Wait Until March to Catch Up on Movies

Throughout the year we tend to see daily deal sites discount bulk movie tickets, and cinema chains often offer promotions for ticket sales as well. But strangely enough, these types of movie deals have largely been a miss in February for the past two years; in February 2011, we didn't see a single deal for discounted movie vouchers, and in 2010, we only saw an offer from AMC to watch a marathon of the Oscar-nominated Best Picture nominees. The scarcity in February is maybe a fluke (for two years in a row?), or perhaps theaters actually believe the upcoming Academy Awards is enough of an impetus for consumers to get into their seats. Either way, there's a chance that avid movie goers may have to pay full-price this month.

Go Big on HDTVs

Unfortunately, the head-turning deals we saw on 42" LCD HDTVs in November and December came to a quicker-than-expected end in January as prices on name-brand and third-tier 42" sets jumped back to their pre-September averages. Likewise, 55" 3D LCDs slowly made the transition from $999 back to $1,337. But that doesn't mean TVs should be off your radar just yet.

Big-screen TVs — those in the 55" and 60" category — are still coming in at aggressive price points. Deals on 55" name-brand LCDs, for instance, hit $800 in December and $700 in January (the lowest price we've seen for a 55" name-brand LCD TV since this summer, when we saw a Toshiba drop to an astonishing $559 for less than an hour). That means we could see better or equal deals on these sets trickle into February, especially as new CES models begin to enter the market. Name-brand 60" sets hit an all-time low of $800 in November, and while we haven't seen that price point since, we have seen LED-backlit sets (also name-brand) in recent weeks that hover around the all-time low price of $970, giving us hope of seeing similar deals in February.

Laptops

Fully-equipped desktop replacements (those with 17" screens, Core i7 CPUs, and 8GB of RAM) are still enjoying all-time lows. During the past three months, we've seen deals on these 17" premium systems hit $800 — a price we've never seen before. Dual-core 15" laptops, however, have gone up in price, slowly reaching their pre-holiday average of roughly $330.

Shoppers should also keep an eye on ultrabooks, one of the hottest trends at CES this year. As these super-thin laptops begin to hit the market in greater numbers, they could potentially lower the price on other 12" and 13" laptops.

Ready to put this information to use? You may have skipped Black Friday — overwhelmed by the offers, hype, and crowds — but the holiday season is a different beast altogether, with gifts from loved ones, friends, and people you barely know coming at you from all angles. Keep your holiday cheer level high by shopping wisely. (See also: Shopping Calendar: The Best Time to Buy Anything)

We've pored over the extensive dealnews archives of sales, coupons, and individual products from years past to guide you in your quest for the most savvy purchases in December. Here's what we found.

Buy a Bike, Use it Later?

For many of our northernmost readers, bike riding in the winter is implausible, but you should consider purchasing a bike this month all the same. While other months might have seen greater volume of bicycle deals, we saw the most Editors' Choice-level bargains during the month of December last year from vendors like REI, Walmart, and Performance Bike. Otherwise, the next time we saw a substantial number of deals and sales came in May.

Get Good Deals on Toys...by Still Waiting

Finally, it's the best time to buy holiday toys! Almost. As we've mentioned before, many toys will hit their lowest price points of the season as we get closer we get to Christmas. Last year, many of the tops toys of the season hit their lowest points in the week before Christmas. That said, during the week before that, we saw a staggering number of Editors' Choice toy deals on the whole; in fact, it was the best week of the month for top-shelf discounts on toys. Shop during this period, and you'll improve your chances of getting the best deals.

Stock Up on Kitchen Items for More Holiday Cooking

Although we noted in our last buying guide that November is the best month to buy cookware, the sales and discounts last year largely carried over into December. Even though the overall volume of deals was down slightly, December actually slightly edged out November with the number of Editors' Choice-level offers. Look for top offers from Macy's, Kohl's, Amazon, FoodSaver, Williams Sonoma, and JCPenney, on items such as cutlery sets, bakeware, and small appliances.

Tools and Hardware Deals for Dad?

Last year, both November and December were excellent months to buy tools and hardware items, matched only by the month of July for Editors' Choice offers. November this year however proved to be significantly less thrilling in this department, with about 50% fewer top-shelf deals. We're hoping though that December will deliver like it did last year, with significant discounts on wrench and screwdriver sets, drills, lawn-care tools, and more.

It's a Great Time to Buy Christmas Decorations! (After Christmas, That Is)

At this point, it's common knowledge that holiday decorations see their greatest discounts after the holiday in question has passed, and this is no different for Christmas. If you wait until December 26, you'll see discounts of 50% to 70% off from stores like West Elm, Home Depot, Sears, Crate & Barrel, and Macy's. If you absolutely must buy a fake Christmas tree before the 25th, look to Walmart and Kohl's for extremely inexpensive options.

Blu-ray Movies Make Budget-Friendly Gifts

As we noted last month, November — and specifically around Black Friday — is a great time to get inexpensive Blu-ray disc movies, but this good fortune extends into December. While we saw a slight drop-off in top-shelf deals last year (there were about 20% fewer Editors' Choice offers in December than there were in November), the cumulative discounts were still much better than any other month throughout the rest of the year. That means movies and TV shows may be an ideal gift for everyone on your holiday shopping list.

Put Off Buying a Wall Calendar

You may see some modest discounts this month and early in 2012 that will entice you to purchase a calendar, but the first significant sales we'll see on these items come at the end of January and beginning of February. (You can of course see even bigger discounts the longer you put it off, but you actually want to use the calendar, right?)

Wait to Buy Jewelry

Sorry, boyfriends and husbands of the world. As our Media Editor put it during last week's podcast, "Big Jewelry" has you in a corner this month. Jewelry just doesn't see its best discounts of the year before Christmas, so if you haven't already purchased a piece in advance, you might not be getting a great deal. You could always try to get around this by using a broad department store or apparel coupon for a nominal discount, but many stores, including Macy's, frequently excludes jewelry from these offers.

Like Jewelry, Bad Timing to Buy Watches

Just like jewelry, watches don't see their best discounts of the year during the holiday season, likely because so many shoppers feel more compelled to buy them in December. But unlike jewelry, there's a small trend toward decent deals for watches before the clock strikes Christmas. During the first and second weeks, we saw a handful of Editors' Choice offers that featured significant price cuts. Be sure to keep an eye on the deal-a-day sites that specialize in watches, like ChronoShark and World of Watches.

Time to Look Into Top-Brand HDTVs

Black Friday is over, so it's time to forget about TVs, right? Wrong. We saw some rock-bottom prices on numerous sets during the post-Thanksgiving shopping holiday, but many of the best prices were from off-brand manufacturers. And though we saw some choice name-brand deals last week too, they were generally more than their off-brand counterparts in the same size-category. But according to a recent feature, top-brand sets will approach prices that are comparable to Black Friday during the mid-December to February time period. It may be a good time to set an email alert for your favorite manufacturer and screen size, so you can catch those prices when they hit the site.

Opt for Desktop Replacements Over Other Notebooks

Despite its proximity to Black Friday, December has never been an ideal month for buying a laptop. In fact, dealnews data shows that for the past three years, laptop prices for a 15" to 16" dual-core system have gone up an average of 7% from November to December. That's not to say all hope is lost. If your Christmas list still includes a laptop you might want to check out deals on desktop replacements (systems measuring 17" or more) as prices on those systems dropped 40% (from November's lowest price) in December of last year. And with the influx of laptop deals we saw this past Black Friday, we wouldn't be surprised if a few solid deals trickle into December. Just don't expect them to be the year's best.

This post is by Dealnews.

It's almost impossible to NOT shop in December. Many categories hit their lowest points during this month, usually around Black Friday (not surprisingly). But let's not forget that the month is made up of 30 full days, not to mention the fact that daylight savings ends. (That gives us one more hour to shop!) That means there are deals to be had all month long, not just around the major shopping event. (See also: Shopping Calendar: The Best Time to Buy Anything)

Contrary to popular belief, however, November isn't the best time to buy everything. That said, many product categories will see great deals — there are just a few caveats.

Home Furniture Surprises With Strong Deals

Many other media outlets will tell you that January is the best time to buy furniture, since manufacturers begin introducing new styles in February. Our archives reflect that January is indeed a good month for bargains on home furniture, but November may be even stronger. Two years of data show that November featured the greatest volume of Editors' Choice offerings, as well as the most furniture deals in general. In fact, last year, we saw 39% more home furniture deals in November than we did in January 2011. Expect to see discounted pieces from Walmart, Target, Kohl's, JCPenney, Sears, Amazon, Overstock, and more. One caveat: January did offer a few more general furniture sales of note (like from Pier 1 Imports) than November.

Current Season Apparel, the Good and the Bad

Last month we noted that winter season apparel items will likely see their greatest sales beginning in January. However, last year, a number of apparel stores offered their best online coupons of the year in the weeks leading up to (and around) Black Friday, and most stacked with existing sales and markdowns. Expect to see an abundance of "best of the year" coupons that take 20% to 40% off, with some reaching even higher discounts. (In fact, 57% of last year's Editors' Choice apparel coupons available during the week of Black Friday took a full 30% off or more.)

Tis Not Yet the Season for Toys

With all the holiday shopping you'll likely be doing at the end of this month, you may start to get overly confident and think, "I can save on toys for the kids too!" As we reported a few weeks ago, however, the best time to get the greatest discounts on toys for the holidays is during the 14 days leading up to Christmas. Moreover, if you're considering buying a new game console for your kid, keep in mind that there are rumored new releases — finally! — from both Wii and Xbox next year, which should push down the retail prices of today's "current" systems (which are actually several years old).

Candy That's Guilt-Free (Price Wise)

Candy helps to keep your blood sugar up during the coming weeks of intense shopping, and luckily the best time buy Halloween items, including candy, starts November 1. While it may be hard to get excited about a discounted costume you can't (acceptably) wear again until next year, you can easily stock up on Halloween candy for immediate consumption. Is a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup in the shape of a pumpkin any less delicious? We think not!

Cookware Items See Strong Deals

Rarely do "need" and "best time to buy" so perfectly coalesce. As you prepare to knock the socks off the in-laws this Thanksgiving with an impressive feast, you may discover that there are some holes in your arsenal of cookware. Luckily we saw a sizeable increase in overall kitchen deals last November (about 25% more than the average), which continued into December, albeit with a slight drop off. Moreover, roughly a quarter of November's cookware deals were of Editors' Choice caliber. In years past, you could get your mitts on cookware and cutlery sets, bakeware, turkey fryers — a favorite amongst the dealnews staff — and a "best of the year" sale from Oneida.

Pad Your Stash of Holiday Gifts With Cheap Blu-ray Movies

Even though we see select Blu-ray disc deals throughout the year, the titles you want can still cost you a pretty penny. But around Black Friday, the amount of discounts you'll see on Blu-ray movies will make them easy gift additions and relegate them to stocking stuffer status for some. Last year, we saw a plethora of popular titles for as little as $5 shipped, and we expect to see these sales again this year.

It's Finally the Best Time to Buy HDTVs

At last, we can deliver positive buying advice with regard to TVs! As we noted in our Black Friday predictions, you'll see many TV sizes hit their lowest price point of the year later this month. On average, HDTV prices fall 15% to 20% below the previous lowest price we had seen. Also, in nearly every size category, prices dropped in the weeks leading up to Black Friday, so we should see notable HDTV deals before the holiday itself.

When it comes to TVs around Black Friday, however, keep in mind that best-priced sets at rock-bottom prices are likely going to be off-brand models. But where off-brand goes, so too do the major manufacturers — eventually. We'll start seeing major discounts on top brand TVs in December. If your biggest concern is getting an all-time low for certain specifications, and you're not necessarily looking for a TV with all the bells and whistles, definitely keep your eyes peeled around Black Friday.

Several Buying Options for Laptops

If you're itching to replace a sluggish laptop, November is your month. Mainstream systems — or ones that contain the minimum specifications that an average consumer would need — will be available at startlingly low prices during the week of Black Friday. In our Black Friday predictions, we noted that 15" to 16" laptops with an Intel Core i5 processor and 4GB of RAM will start at $325, the lowest price of the year. Moreover, basic configurations could dip as low as $189 while desktop replacements — with top-of-the-line processors, lots of RAM, and a sizeable hard drive — could cost as little as $720.

Android Tablets Offer an Opportunity for Bargains

We were surprised last year to see that Apple offered a discount on the iPad during Black Friday, though the savings were relatively slight. If a tablet is on your wishlist this year, consider opting for Android instead, where there will be greater potential to save. With a wealth of manufacturers to compete against, tablets with the Android OS are far more likely to see discounts throughout the year, and several top WiFi models, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab or Motorola XOOM, could hit all-time low prices later this month. Additionally, we're predicting that generic Android tablets will start at just $75, making it a cheap novelty gift for the techie in your life.

This post is by Dealnews.

November is one of the happiest months for budget-conscious shopping. So we've mined the extensive dealnews archives of sales, coupons, and individual products from the past few seasons to guide you in your quest for the savviest purchases in October. Here's what we found. (See also: Shopping Calendar: The Best Time to Buy Anything)

Halloween Items

Sure, the best time to buy a Halloween costume starts November 1. But what good will that do you unless you're extremely sure you still want to be Dr. Who next year for Halloween? (OK, bad example. That costume is timeless.) Still, you'll see substantial sales on costumes the week before the holiday, with numerous stores also offering stacking coupons to sweeten the deal. Last year, we saw moderate sales from the likes of BuyCostumes, Costume Craze, Toys "R" Us, and Diapers.com, and they got even stronger in the days leading up to the holiday itself. Of course, don't wait too long, otherwise you'll have to deal with expensive expedited shipping just to receive your getup in time.

If you're worried about waiting until mid-month, there are ways to score big discounts early this month. Last year we saw several deal-a-day sites (Groupon, BuyWithMe, and KGB Deals) offer credits for costume shops up until the middle of the month.

Just like costumes, Halloween decorations will go on deep discount immediately after the holiday. Unless you fear that you'll grow sick of the standard witches and broomsticks, you could easily stock up on cheap decorations now and store them for next year. Expect discounts of 50% to 90% off themed items.

Pumpkins

Along the East Coast, flooding from last month's Hurricane Irene damaged many pumpkin patches, so prices on the seasonal gourd may be above average this October. Several media outlets are reporting that pumpkin prices could be almost double the norm. That said, your kids may not let you get away with saving money by forgoing this holiday staple. So instead of carving the pumpkins, try painting them so you can roast them later and freeze the purée for Thanksgiving.

Cold Weather Apparel

Although you may already be experiencing chilly weather in your area and winter apparel seems like a savvy investment, the sharpest discounts on cold weather items won't come until January. If you just can't wait until after the New Year, you should at least try holding out until November. Around Black Friday, a wealth of apparel retailers will offer their best coupons of the year, which may take a full 40% off or more. That said, last year there were still some noteworthy discounts for current-season items at the end of the month from retailers such as Old Navy, Lands' End, Banana Republic, Levi's, PacSun, and more.

Denim

While September is a good time to find discounts on denim, so too is October, as retailers continue to try to move the styles they'd hoped to sell during Back to School season. Some jean specialists, like 7 for All Mankind and Levi's, offered their best coupons of the year — up to that point. Levi's then offered an even better discount later during the Black Friday onslaught of apparel coupons,. And though there were moderate sales on jeans from broad retailers like Shop Ecko, Lucky, Aeropostale, and Gap, you're likely to see those retailers tender their best coupons during Black Friday, which will stack with any remaining jeans in the sale section.

Lingerie

In October of last year, dealnews saw an uptick in the number of women's intimates deals, which further picked up steam through November and December. We saw panties for as low as $2 shipped from Kohl's, and bras for as low as $5. Moreover, Frederick's of Hollywood — that purveyor of risqué intimate apparel — offered its best extra discount ever with a full 50% off sale items. The same is true of aerie by American Eagle. That said, we also saw numerous Editors' Choice-level deals for intimates from these sellers, as well as Victoria's Secret in November and early December.

Toys

Toys "R" Us recently released its Fabulous 15 list of the must-have toys for the holiday season, and your kids may be already spouting off the names of toys they absolutely need. The temptation may thus arise to shop early and get it over with, but cool your engines, parents. Take note of what they want now, and wait until December to start seeing notable price drops. You might even get lucky and find that the toy du jour is amid one of the price wars we saw between Walmart and Amazon last year.

Garden Items

Although we saw more deals on discounted garden items in September of last year, October brought stronger markdowns. Several patio sets and gardening items from Sears, Amazon, and other merchants hit their lowest prices in October, as they were available for significantly less than we had seen them at over the summer. If you've got a green thumb or if you're looking to replace your patio set for next summer, now is a good time to buy.

HDTVs

If you've been waiting for prices on TVs to drop, your patience is about to be rewarded. Black Friday is just weeks away, and if last year is any indication, October could see some aggressive deals. 55" LCD HDTVs, in particular, began their price descent in October, eventually reaching their low point in December. 42" LCD HDTVs, on the other hand, saw a small price increase in October, a sign that November and December are really the prime months for TV shopping. So while you will see solid deals in October, try to hold off a few more weeks for the real doorbusters.

Laptops

Power on. Last year, October proved to be the fourth best month to purchase a mainstream 15" laptop. While that's not too shabby, we'd recommend waiting those extra weeks until November arrives; our archives show that November was the best month of the year to purchase from all laptop categories in 2010 (with the exception of ultraportables, which reached their lowest point in December). Various laptop manufacturers are also poised to announce new ultrabook laptops in October, which could potentially lower the price of current thin and light-weight models for November.

This post is by Dealnews.

Whether you're looking for clothing, costumes, or early holiday gifts, use these tips to guide you in your quest for the savviest purchases this month.

This article is from Dealnews of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. But what about those exhilarating city-specific activities and scrumptious must-eats that make vacationing all the more memorable? With the birth of local deal sites, you can now unearth savings in other areas of your trip.

Several months ago, we laid out the pros and cons to using various local deal sites to discount activities while traveling. Now, we revisit some of those tips, and bring you some advice about strategy, directly from the source.

Plan Ahead With Groupon, Living Social, and the Like

Many people are familiar with the fantastic discounts that local deal sites like Groupon offer, but many neglect to use them while traveling. Usually, the idea comes too late. And according to Julie Anne Mossler at Groupon, a traveler looking to score a local deal should be on the lookout at least a month in advance, to get an idea for the types of deals that are available. (Plus, you just want a greater variety to choose from.)

But it doesn't stop at just domestic locations. Groupon expanded internationally in May of last year and now spouts out daily deals in 43 countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and Turkey. Company representatives say that domestic deal hunting for travel purposes has been a growing trend, and international travelers will likely follow suit. (See also: 40 Most Useful Travel Websites That Can Save You a Fortune)

Both Groupon and Living Social claim to provide non-touristy deals perfect for travelers and city-regulars alike, meaning local staffs scour and filter through to pick the best deals within each city. (Dealnews has a review of these local deal sites for specific travel purposes.) Be wary, though, of just using these websites. Tried and true forums like Yelp and regional websites and magazines are good cross-checking sources for travelers wanting to ensure they're seeing the right sights, buying offers in neighborhoods that are relevant to their trip, or getting, for instance, <e>the best cupcake in town as an end-of-day reward.</e>

While Mossler notes the appeal to having a deal site for even the more exotic locales, such as Hong Kong, the caveat is that the site is usually in the native language of the country. In cases like these, making use of Google Translate may come in handy. Groupon Getaways also provides sidebars with complementary deals — hence a getaway in Bangkok would be coupled with, for example, a good deal on tickets to the city's popular local theater.

Finding Offers on the Go

For those already on vacation, Groupon Now! is a real-time alternative that also alleviates the uncertainty of trying to place a deal in your itinerary before you leave. Though it's only available in 25 cities, the mobile app is available for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry and provides deals straight to your phone based on your current location.

Such was the case for Yasmin Ali, who recently visited New York City and used the application to see if there was a nearby deal to satiate her sweet tooth after dinner. "We came across a great crepe place," she said. "It turned out to be great food and a great deal."

Think Before You Buy

Being vigilant, however, is key. Midwest native and successful Groupon traveler Meha Ahmad reminds travelers to read the fine print. "I would recommend, before purchasing a deal, to call the company or business ahead of time to double check the fine print and availability of the deal," she says. "You want to make sure your deal is usable for the time that you'll be in the city."

Since deals get booked fast, it's always a good precautionary measure to call before or as you buy. And with attentive and careful planning, you can end up with an excellent addition to your trip. Ahmad got lucky when planning for a trip to Vegas by finding the perfect activity and scheduling a slot in the nick of time for her very last day.

"Activities like zip lining and ATV riding in the desert sounded amazing, but were a bit out of our price range," she says. "As luck would have it, there was a Groupon for the exact ATV tour I was hoping for! We got 50% off the original price, and were able to pay for four people what we would have paid for two."

Pretty sweet deal, don't you think?

Planning for an upcoming trip? Check out the dealnews local deals section to scour for discounts on food, drink, and activities.

This post is by Dealnews.

If you're planning a vacation, you've probably already found a great deal on airfare and accommodations. And to understand these trends means a consumer can shop with greater savvy for saving. (See also: Shopping Calendar: The Best Time to Buy Anything)

So at dealnews, we've mined our extensive archives of sales, coupons, and individual products from the past few years to find trends that can guide the buying experience in September. Here's what we found:

Labor Day Sales

Just because it's a holiday weekend doesn't mean you should automatically whip out your credit card. We saw numerous special discounts and sales for Labor Day weekend last year from popular retailers (like Macy's, Gap, Kmart, Kohl's, and Home Depot), but in many cases, those discounts were about on par with offers we saw in previous months.

However, select retailers (like Converse, Bath & Body Works, Rockport, Express, Men's Wearhouse, Forever 21, Sears, and Eddie Bauer) featured the best discounts we had seen that year during this weekend, and most of the best sales were for apparel, sneakers, and sandals.

So if you're on a lookout for clothing, it might be a good weekend to snatch up late-season apparel — a lot of which you can easily transition into a fall wardrobe. Also, keep an eye out for Labor Day coupons that will take an extra discount from existing markdowns. According to our data, they can offer as much as an extra 35% off, but normally fall between an extra 15% to 25% off. In many cases they aren't the best coupons we've seen from these stores; for example, Gap offered a 25% off coupon last year during this weekend, when we had seen several 30% off codes in July and August. But in many cases, the codes stack with existing sales and provide a nice incentive during a weekend you may already be planning to shop.

Apparel

Despite the numerous clothing sales you'll see during Labor Day weekend, apparel might be a difficult category to shop for in the upcoming fall season. Because of increased cotton and labor prices earlier in the year, prices for new fall apparel may increase by as much as 10%. (Even though cotton prices have dropped significantly since that early spike, fall is when we'll start to see the effects in stores.) September may still be early enough to miss some of these projected increases, but for season-appropriate apparel, you should consider shopping sites like 6pm that feature older stock that's immune to the current production cost issues.

And, as far as sales on previous season items go, you may benefit from waiting until October. Although we noted many clothing sales during Labor Day weekend, we also mentioned that many weren't the best we had seen. For men's apparel, for example, we saw 30% more Editors' Choice-level deals in October than we did in September.

Bed and Bath

Deals were rather strong in September 2010 for bedding, towels, and more. Specifically, we saw several Editors' Choice options for bedding sets. Keep an eye out for these discounted home items from the likes of Walmart, Kohl's, and Bed, Bath & Beyond. (There were great sales all around at Kohl's, especially when you factor in the free shipping and stacking 10% off coupons that the merchant offered in September in both 2009 and 2010.)

Airfare

Around this time of year, the next major trip you have planned may very well be for Thanksgiving. And even though you may be tempted to purchase airfare early, our data suggests you could get a better deal in October. We saw zero Editors' Choice-level flight sales in September, and several in October (from Virgin America, Frontier, and Southwest, among others), as well as a general increase in volume.

Car Accessories

Conventional wisdom says that September, particularly around Labor Day, is one of the best times of the year to buy a car. dealnews can't specifically confirm that, as we don't list cars, but we do however track car accessories. And interestingly enough, we saw a slight increase in deals for auto goods in the month of September. In particular, accessories to enhance a car, from car mats to brake pads, were more prominent. We saw great sales from Amazon and Sears too, mainly in the first two weeks of the month.

HDTVs

Last September we saw a spike in 55" LCD LED TV prices as they jumped from August's best price of $1,400 to $1,710. (3D sets also jumped from $2,114 to $2,272.) The good news is that October immediately rings in a significant drop in TV prices, which continues until the end of the year. Thus, we expect most sets to hit new lows come November and December. September is the month we recommend skipping if you're in need of a new LCD HDTV.

Laptops

When it comes to laptops, September is an odd month to make purchases. It's too late to take advantage of back-to-school sales, and it's too early to see any Black Friday-like pricing. In fact, last year September prices on a 16" mainstream laptop were slightly up from August prices (jumping $21 from $858 to $879). October deals were much more aggressive with prices dropping as low as $769. We expect a similar trend this year, but if you're looking for the greatest discount, wait until November.

This post is by Dealnews.

With an eye to last-year's and current trends, learn what you should shop for in September and what to leave on the store shelves.

This article is from Dealnews of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. There are so many different ways to ensure you're getting a deal — all you have to do is a tiny bit of work.

You're already on Wise Bread, so you've (hopefully) already figured out whether this is an essential purchase or not. But once you know you're going to buy something online, what next?

The first thing you ought to do is comparison shop. If it's something you can get at a bunch of different places (say a book or a DVD), then make sure you check out a bunch of different sites. I'd start with Amazon.com and maybe Overstock.com. They usually battle each other pretty good when it comes to prices.

And depending on the item, Wal-Mart.com is worth a peek too. Also under "depending on the item," you may want to try EBay or Craigslist. Buying used can save you a bunch of money.

But if you really want to "go deep" you should entrust the services of the masters of search. Run a Google search and then look for the Shopping tab at the top of the screen. Google will look for prices across the whole web and find the cheapest price. Sometimes that will mean visiting "CrazyCheapElectronics.com." That might make you a little uncomfortable, especially when it comes time to type in your credit card number. But that's an individual comfort level thing.

Then there are times where what you want to buy is only available at one store. My wife and I recently bought some thank you cards from Tiny Prints. A friend had recommended TinyPrints and we compared their overall prices with some other sites. We went and added a custom picture of our newborn, tweaked it a little bit, and settled on a design template. It was really cute.

After doing all that work, you better believe we were going to buy from them come hell or high water.

But this is where people tend to get a little lazy. They figure they didn't do any comparison shopping so they're doomed to pay retail. Don't be a sucker, though! When you're checking out, keep your eyes peeled for some entry boxes labeled "Promotional code" or "discount code" or "Enter coupon code." Something that denotes the ability to get a discount it you have the right code.

Whatever that box is called, it means you can save some money. Say it says "Promotional code." Take that phrase, wrap it in some quotes, then add the name of the site you're on, and run a Google search for it. So for TinyPrints, I believe it was:

tinyprints.com "promotional code"

Then let Google do the rest. It will find sites that have coupons listed for your site. If a site has a "promo code" box in the checkout process then that means there are promo codes floating around somewhere, and who better than Google to find them for you?

I usually like to check Retailmenot.com, which allows users to vote up the coupons that are working for them to give you a better idea of what works and what doesn't. But this Google search will open the doors to any other coupons and deals that might be out there.

Maybe it's 10% off or free shipping or something. But trust me, there's a deal out there waiting for you. All you have to do is find it.

This article is from Carlos Portocarrero of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
