Not only does it allow you to save more now, but if you do lose your full-time job, you have something you can fall back on.

Thus, Palmer’s book is a guide to starting your own side business, and she is both inspiring and realistic about the rewards and challenges. One of the most interesting things about Palmer’s book is that it fills a very particular niche. In a world where people celebrate the entrepreneurs who go out and become their own bosses full-time, Palmer’s book targets people who want to start side gigs but not necessarily to replace their full-time jobs. And Palmer doesn’t just interview others about their experience doing this, but she also did it herself — she launched a successful financial planner business in addition to her full-time job with US News and World Report.

Steps to Building Your Financial Safety Net

I strongly recommend reading the entire book — not only does Palmer outline stories from people who have made the leap to successful side gigs already, but the back section is a workbook that helps you figure out what kind of side gig would fit your personality and how to get started. Here are a few of the most important takeaways from the book.

Be Passionate

This is a key idea that Palmer hits on again and again — if you’re going to take on a side gig in addition to your full-time job, it needs to be something you’re passionate about, whether that’s helping others, creative work, or something else.

It also helps if you’re passionate about the reason why you want extra money as well. Palmer notes that many people start to earn more side income after they have children, so they can provide more stability for their families. She says that focusing “on the big-picture reason for those goals -- the specifics behind financial security or a better family life — actually improves on the chances of making them happen.” Many of the side gigers that Palmer profiles wake up early — some as early as 4:45 — to work on their side job before going into their day jobs. You need passion to make that work.

Start Now

If you wait to start a side business until you really feel like you’re ready, you could be waiting forever. Palmer writes that “Many side-giggers in this book discovered their side gigs almost by accident… Instead of slowing down and first building a Facebook page or stocking up on inventory, they said ‘yes’ to the opportunity in front of them.” Don’t wait. Look for opportunities in front of you — or make your own.

Don’t Undervalue Yourself — in Any Way

When starting a side gig, it can be easy to lowball your worth because you’re trying to get your business launched. One great thing Palmer pointed out is that this doesn’t just mean your worth in terms of money — it’s also your worth in terms of time. If you completely sacrifice things that really matter, like spending time with family, your side gig ultimately won’t be worth it.

There are a couple of changes I’d make to the book — some chapters have more example stories than necessary, and the section on common pitfalls to avoid when starting a side gig is a short appendix stuck in the back (it would be great if this section was much meatier). But overall, “The Economy of You” is a great starting point for anyone who wants to gain financial independence with a second income stream but hasn’t been sure how to begin.

You can buy The Economy of You” on Amazon.

Do you have a side gig? Anyone who asks you to invest $500 (or more) in inventory before you've made a single sale does not have your best interests in mind. Any company that pays you $5 per online review that you write will not make you rich. And any online vendor that asks you to handle credit card processing is probably downright breaking the law.

If you want to earn money from your home, here's a better idea: Launch a home-based business based on your own skills, creativity, and passions. You will not only increase your income, but you will also discover the deep sense of satisfaction that comes from creating a product or service that other people find useful.

I'm biased towards this approach because it's exactly what I did. When I found myself wanting to earn some extra money on top of my full-time job, I launched an Etsy shop of money planners, based around meeting various goals, from preparing for a baby to organizing finances for the year. Sales were slow at first, but once I caught the eye of some bloggers, the customers came. I started earning close to $200 a month from my shop — not enough to pay my mortgage, but just enough to prove to myself that I have something valuable to offer, and to know that I could ramp it up if I ever needed or wanted to.

If you're considering launching your own home-based side-business, consider these 10 popular options, based on my interviews with entrepreneurs and career experts as well as data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, PayScale.com, Freelancer.com, and Upwork. They give you the chance to share your own skills with the world, while also bringing in some extra cash:

1. Website Designer

If you have the ability to create functional and beautiful websites, then you probably already know it's a potentially lucrative skill, and also one that can be easily done from home. That's why it's the number one ranked home-based side-business on the list. Freelancer.com has singled out website design as one of the fastest growing jobs, with over 10,000 jobs in the field posted each quarter on the site. PayScale.com reports that part-time, freelance graphic web designers earn a median rate of around $30 an hour.

2. Marketing Consultant

If you enjoy reaching out to bloggers, social media friends, and reporters to help get word out about other people's projects and businesses, then you can earn a good living from it – around $50 an hour, according to PayScale.com. Since the work is done primarily by phone and email, you can also do it from the comfort of home.

3. Social Media Consultant

If you love playing around on Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other social media sites, then this one might be for you. Lots of solopreneurs as well as companies are looking to hire freelance social media consultants, as evidenced by the growing number of postings on Freelancer.com and other websites. Create a profile for yourself and start picking up clients.

4. Writer

Writers include bloggers, authors of technical guides, publishers of ebooks, and everything in between. Technical writers are among the best paid in the bunch, with copyeditors and proofreaders falling further down the pay scale. Still, all types of writers can pretty much work from anywhere, including their kitchen table, and at any time.

5. Baker

This glamorized profession, thanks to TLC's DC Cupcakes and other baking-related shows, can also be a lucrative one. You can earn more if you find a way to stand out and put your own unique twist on the baked goods, as well as by layering in blogging, teaching, and perhaps even a related online store. Make sure you prepare for the start-up costs, though, which could include state-specific licenses.

6. Voice Actor

Voice actors are in hot demand, thanks largely to small business owners who want to create multimedia websites. You can get started on sites such as Upwork or Fiverr, and you might already have all the supplies you need, like a microphone and headset. Upwork lists voice acting as one of the fastest growing fields, and it's one you can do from almost any (quiet) room.

7. Career Coach

If you find friends already ask you for tips on navigating the workplace and job market, then you might want to consider taking your free advice to a professional level. Career coaches typically work one-on-one with clients and they can do so over the phone, email, or video chat sessions. They also help with improving resumes and cover letters, tasks that are also easily accomplished from home. You don't need any special certification to get started, but it's an option.

8. Artist

Fine artists can earn a living by selling their work on an e-commerce site like Etsy, Zazzle, or RedBubble. Finding paying customers isn't always easy, but by spreading the word about your creations over social media and blogging networks, you can build towards a steady stream of income. Since art is typically a luxury purchase, the field tends to fluctuate with the economy.

9. Online Community Builder

This relatively new field involves connecting people online, typically through new websites or on social media. Examples include DailyMuse.com and dcurbanmom.com. Web design skills help, as do social media fluency — along with a great idea for a niche community hungry for a new way to connect online.

10. Tutor

Tutoring clients often want to stop by your house after school and in the evenings, which can make this the perfect gig for work-at-home parents with school-age children of their own. Tutors usually have education degrees and additional certifications or licenses, although for those working privately for families it's not required. They typically pick up local clients through word-of-mouth, and might specialize in specific areas such as college essay editing or college admissions coaching.

By launching any of these home-based businesses, you'll end up improving the lives of your customers – and your own.

Kimberly Palmer is the author of the new book, "The Economy of You: Discover Your Inner Entrepreneur and Recession-Proof Your Life," and senior money editor for U.S. News & World Report, where she writes the popular Alpha Consumer blog. As big a fan as I am of business deductions, though, there’s a piece of financial advice that crosses my desk on a regular basis that may not make as much sense as it seems to on the surface — starting a small business for the tax deductions. It just isn’t as simple as it sounds. (See also: 16 Great Tax Deductions You May Have Overlooked)

A Question of Qualifying Deductions

The logic behind starting a business to get a few more tax deductions makes sense at first glance. You can write off some of the gas for your vehicle, maybe some of your rent or mortgage for a home office, and even the occasional meal. Maybe you’ll even make a little money along the way.

But the reason that the IRS will let you write off business expenses is because you’re spending money beyond what you normally would for your personal life, with the intention of building up a business. You don’t have the option to write off any of the expenses you already have before you start up this hypothetical business. And if the IRS even suspects that you’re writing off personal expenses as part of your business, you can be required to pay additional taxes, plus penalties.

You’ve Got to Make Money

On top of being able to prove that your expenses are directly related to your business, you have to be able to show a profit from your business. It’s true that the IRS doesn’t require you to make money off the bat. There are even provisions in place to make sure that a bad year doesn’t cause the IRS to reclassify your business as a hobby. But you do have to turn a profit for three out of five years when you’re operating your business. Otherwise the assumption is that you’re not motivated by profit and therefore not really running a business.

Actually, operating a business that turns a profit is hard. Even if you’re just working on the side and you’ve got a full-time job that can subsidize your business, it’s a big time commitment. If you aren’t interested in running a business — if you’re just after a tax shelter — it’s just not worth the effort.

Better Tax Options

There are much easier ways to save money on your taxes than starting a whole new business. Anyone who tells you otherwise probably didn’t start a business exclusively for the tax benefits, if they’ve followed all the rules when it comes to operating a business in the first place. You’d be better off from a tax point of view by looking for opportunities to donate to nonprofits.

This article is from Thursday Bram of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. I think the answer lies somewhere in the machinery of our consumer culture. We’re constantly encouraged to buy things whether we can afford them or not. There are creditors lining up to finance whatever they’ve convinced us that we not only need, but rightfully deserve. And what happens when we find ourselves on that predictable but precarious ledge — teetering on the edge of financial ruin? There are more products and services to buy that can help us solve our financial problems. And (surprise!) not only do we need these essential tools, we deserve them!

If you see the sick cycle here, you’re not alone. More and more folks are waking up and realizing that taming debt just takes a bit of planning, some conscious choices, and some very hard work. Let’s explore a few strategies to tackle your debt and empower your financial future. (See also: How to Start Fighting Debt — Today)

Face How Much You Owe

The first step to any successful debt repayment plan is to get an accurate idea of exactly what you’re up against. Avoidance is not your friend; organize your statements, make calls, and determine exactly how much you owe to each creditor. It’ll inform the rest of your strategy and help prepare you for the next essential steps.

Go Cash-Only

I was tempted to make this the first step, but people tend to be much more motivated to adopt a cash-only life when they see how much they owe. Consciously choosing to spurn all but the most essential (read: life-and-death) debt is a vital piece of the puzzle. Put your credit cards on ice and resolve to pay with cash only. Consider rudimentary cash management systems like envelope budgeting to keep your spending in-check. Withdraw all the cash you'll need at the beginning of the month and divide it between envelopes that are labeled by expense. Force yourself to spend only within the parameters of each envelope's available cash. Nothing saps motivation like hammering down one debt while another one pops up somewhere else.

Chart It Out

Equipped with your figures, create a spreadsheet of what you owe. This doesn’t have to be fancy. Whether you use a computer and budgeting software or poster-board and a Sharpie, just take the information out of the abstract and make it visual. Keep your chart prominent and easily accessible to encourage updates maintain laser-like focus. Use it to track progress, make notes, document your successes, and motivate yourself along the way.

Start Communicating

Once you know how much you owe and can see the challenge ahead, it’s time to start communicating (if you haven’t already done so). Start a discourse between yourself and your creditors. Explain your situation — share the circumstances that helped create this debt and stress your motivation to pay. Ask if there’s any opportunity to lower your interest rates, have penalties waived, or set up a payment plan that will prevent interest from accumulating. Create a list of important customer service numbers to keep the communication channels open during the entire repayment process. This active communication does two things. First, it demystifies the debt and tames it in your mind. Second, it establishes a history of communication and positive interactions that often allow creditors be more flexible with terms.

Attach a Source of Income for Each Debt or Debt Category

Depending on your employment situation and time obligations, consider servicing each debt or debt category through a part-time job. For example, could you work in a coffee shop on weekends and direct everything you make to your car loan? What about tutoring students during the evenings and splitting the income between all your credit card debts? Though it may sound extreme, if your financial resources are already stretched paper-thin, this tactic creates a brand-new money stream that’s earmarked solely for debt repayment. It’s a powerful tool that can often tame debt faster than budgeting and re-budgeting a single source of income.

Pay Off the Small Debts First...and Fast

I know it goes against most number-crunching advice, but I’m still a fan of paying off the smallest debts first. Of course, every situation is unique and there may be extenuating circumstances that make this approach impossible. But if there are no immediate financial disasters looming, (i.e., foreclosure/eviction, repossession, wage garnishments, etc), consider making the smaller debts top priority and taking care of them quickly. This approach gives you a bit of breathing room to focus on the "big kahuna" debts, creates some positive reinforcement, and gives you that most essential tool of all — the encouragement to do it again.

More than likely, when that last payment is made you’ll experience some sort of natural exhilaration. You’ll look at that scrawled chart and all your notes and inadvertently find your motivation for the very last step, the one that goes almost without saying — stay debt-free.

Do you have a debt-defeating story? Buy your mom a camera. Buy your kid a camera.

I know that writing on a frugal living website, I can receive a lot of flack for encouraging you to buy something, especially something as potentially expensive as a camera. But more and more, cameras (by which, these days, I mean digital cameras) are one of those tools that easily pay for themselves by helping you achieve other frugal goals. (See also: How to Really Save Money When You Shop)

Here's how a camera fits in with other common frugal advice.

Valuing Experiences Over Stuff

From birthdays to vacations, one of the most common frugal tips is to spend money on experiences instead of things. But, that said, if I travel somewhere amazing, I want something to remember it by. Photographs can provide more vivid, lasting memories than any t-shirts or tchotchkes, and they can always be printed and displayed.

Generating Side Income

Not every source of side income is going to require photographs, but if you're making something for sale on Etsy, reviewing local restaurants, or finding antiques at yard sales to sell on eBay, a decent camera can easily pay for itself.

Teaching Kids Financial Values

When I was young, a simple point-and-shoot camera was the first "big ticket" item I owned. Giving a kid a camera can be a great way to teach about taking care of things so they last, as well as valuing experiences over stuff. If you feel like getting your kid a film camera, only having 24 or 36 shots on a roll of film can also provide a great lesson about conserving what you have (as 11-year-old Meg could tell you with her several photographs of squirrels at the Grand Canyon).

Making Informed Purchases

Taking a picture of a product and showing it to your significant other or someone else for feedback can help your decision-making process. Cameras are also great for protecting yourself in the case of pre-existing damage to something you've bought. A holiday boost to the bottom line lets you spoil those you care about or simply help cover your expected outlay. At the same time, more cash gives you the chance to indulge yourself with some fancy holiday snacks, drinks, or gadgets.

There are dozens of ways to pick up some side cash to fatten your wallet. Here’s a short list of realistic avenues for consumers to explore.

Pick Up a Seasonal Gig

These jobs are not glamorous, but the service industry depends on temporary seasonal workers during the holidays. If you’re stuck at your office job during the business week, you can still work nights and weekends; that’s when you’re needed most. Even when the unemployment rate is teetering on double digits, you still have a shot. Don’t pigeonhole yourself into retail. Food services expect more customers, too. Seasonal work does not usually last more than two months, so expect to be on the payroll for about 45 days.

Sell Stuff You Don’t Want Anymore

Thanks to Craigslist, eBay, and Amazon, shoppers hit the Internet knowing they can get used items as gifts. In fact, eBay is offering free listings, free Buy It Now options, and other incentives to ensnare cash-strapped holiday shoppers. Capitalize on this and get rid of things you don’t need or want anymore. Sure, this is a great outlet to empty out any junk you have, but also look for rare items that collect dust in the basement or attic, especially if there's a seasonal tie-in; holiday collectibles are obviously in hot demand.

Work the Neighborhood

Whether you live in suburbia or a downtown loft, there’s bound to be a service you can charge for. Ask neighbors if they’d like you to spice up their holiday decorations. Make it known that you’re willing to shovel driveways and sidewalks when snow falls. If you're handy in the kitchen, offer to cater friends’ and family’s holiday parties, or work as a bartender or server at those same functions.

Be Your Own Boss

Use your skills to land a freelance gig. Anybody can look for freelance work, not just writers. If you’re in a local band, look for parties to entertain or venues in need of live performances. Photographers have one of the most in-demand tasks this time of year, so seek work at upscale offices and benefit gatherings. For the more artsy types, there’s work in decorating inside and outside, making holiday cards, or designing storefronts for local businesses. You have a skill. Get paid for it.

Babysit

You don't have to be 13-years-old or in a special club to do this. In fact, many a graduate student has earned spending money by babysitting throughout the calendar year. The holidays in particular are a busy time that can generate opportunities.

Arrive Early and Stay Late at Your Current Job

For those already employed, consider asking for more hours. Full-time employees might be able to earn overtime and get paid time-and-a-half or better. The service industry caters to overtime more than administrative work, but there’s no harm in asking. At the very least, your boss will appreciate your attitude.

This article is from Chris Birk of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. The follow-up question would be "Why aren't you making plans to make more?" When a specific method to make money is mentioned, people usually make a quick decision as to whether it's feasible. Some people can quickly adapt to the method and start making money, but what if you are the type who keeps saying no? Are you actually ready to make more money? To help you figure this out, let's look at the handful of ways people are cashing in, and see if you are willing to do what it takes. (See also: 25 Ways to Make Money Today)

1. Start a Business

Many people find their riches from a company that they started, but opening for business doesn't always mean looking for capital from investors and trying to materialize an idea that may take years. An entrepreneur who mows his neighbor's grass runs a business, and the lady who consults on makeup for people's weddings has a business too. I started MoneyNing.com with no funding, and it's grown to an enterprise that supports multiple people. You can start small too.

2. Change Jobs

Loyalty is cherished in any company. There's no doubt about it, but there are very few success stories of a person who moved up the ranks of the corporate ladder working for only one company. For most people, the big break (in other words, the huge increase in salary) really only occurs when they change positions to a totally different company (or at least department). Do you want to make more money? Perhaps you should dust off your resume and start trying to land interviews. People are paid to contribute, and one of the best ways to improve a business is to hire someone from a totally different company who can inject fresh ideas. Who knows? You might become the star at your new job just because you adapted what you already know from your old company to the new culture.

3. Ask Your Boss

If you like sticking with the same company, then ask your boss how you can earn more. Let him know, respectfully of course, that you'd like to earn more money and see if the pair of you can work out a plan. You will want to have specific goals with a reasonable timeline so when review time comes, you can be factual about your progress.

4. Get a Second Job

Using more hours of your day to make more money is tough work, but it's probably the quickest way to earn more bucks. I would argue that you should find part-time work that can grow into a better source of income than your primary job, because when you work two jobs, the first job will usually suffer. Examples include a small business you are trying to start or a different career that you think is more promising. Either way, don't take this decision lightly and weigh the pros and cons.

5. Start Saving, and Enjoy Passive Income

Once you have amassed a small fortune, you will see the benefit of saving as your passive income grows without much intervention. Dividends, interest payments, and appreciation are mainly why so many people can seem to live without doing much work. There are ups and downs, but if you can stay the course, the long-term picture is usually pretty.

These five methods are how people generally earn more. I bet you already knew all these right? But if you always thought you wanted to make more money and haven't yet, re-read all of the above and honestly ask yourself whether you are willing to do what it takes. Are you really ready? If you are, here are 15 more specific ways to earn more money.

This article is from David Ning of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. In my opinion, side income is something everyone needs. Here are a few reasons why you should start building an income stream outside of your main job. (See also: 5 Money Making Activities You Can Do Today)

1. It's a Personal Safety Net

Your side income can be your personal safety net against unemployment. Job security is really a thing of the past, and you should be prepared to lose that income at any time. In many ways, having a good side income is better than having an emergency fund, because an emergency fund will run out, but you can build your side income further if you lose your job. If you do have an emergency fund, your side income will also make that fund last a lot longer.

2. Control Your Income

Last year I did not get a salary raise at my job due to the economy. However, I did give myself a "raise" by increasing my side income. I have practically no control over the performance of the greater economy and my employer, but I do have control over my side income. Some of my colleagues and family members actually suffered salary cuts last year, and if they created some side income then they could have made up the difference and perhaps given themselves raises, too. Adding a side income gives you greater control on your finances and helps fight against the recession's toll on your household.

3. Have More Savings

This one is a no brainer. If you can earn more income and spend the same amount, then you will be able to save more and invest more. Every little bit of extra money will bring you closer to financial independence, and everyone could use more savings and less debt.

4. Use Your Time More Productively

In the past few years, I have learned quite a bit in the process of building up my online income. At first I did not even make minimum wage for the effort I put in, but I felt productive and learned a lot. I did work that was worthwhile and interesting to me.

Most people want to have some side income but never seriously pursue it because they are too comfortable with a steady paycheck and don't have the motivation to do something extra outside of their regular jobs. Then there are others who simply do not know where to start. Here on Wise Bread there are many articles about making extra cash. For example, I have written about selling used books and writing online. The most important thing is to just start something, and maybe one day that side income will replace your full-time job entirely.

This article is from Xin Lu of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
