Today's TVs can broadcast in stunningly clear high definition, connect to the Internet, and communicate with your other electronic devices. Most of all, TVs are now following the common movie trend of also broadcasting in 3D, making the images you see feel like they're coming to life. To help you decide which 3D television is right for you, we've compiled a list of the top 3D TVs on the market, all of which were tested and recommended by Consumer Reports.

What Is a 3D Television?

A 3D TV is a television set that has the ability to convey depth perception. 3D TVs can utilize a number of different technologies to achieve this effect, including active shutter or polarized 3D systems which require the use of 3D glasses, or an autostereoscopic system which does not. Modern 3D TVs are typically top-of-the-line and include a number of additional features such as USB connectivity and access to Internet, various apps, and other services.

Best 5 3D Televisions

Vizio E500d-A0

The 50-inch Vizio E500d-A0 3D television is part of Vizio’s entry-level series of televisions, but don’t let that fool you — this model still offers excellent picture quality and viewing angles that are higher than average for LCD TVs. (Yes, we're already thinking about it.) But September has its own deal virtues — including Labor Day sales — so we've mined the extensive dealnews archives of sales, coupons, and individual products from the past few summers to find out what are the best and worst things to buy in September. Here's what we found. (See also: Shopping Calendar: The Best Time to Buy Anything)

Cozy Up to Bedding Deals

For the past two years, home good deals have been rather strong in September, specifically for bedding, towels, and the like. We saw a large number of Editors' Choice options for bedding sets this time last year in particular. Keep an eye out for a variety of discounted home items from the likes of JCPenney, Macy's, Sears, Designer Living, and Kohl's. Notably, be on the look out for stacking coupons at Kohl's, and a mattress sale at Sears that beats its summer-month offerings. (Keep in mind however, that last year we saw excellent discounts on mattresses around Black Friday and Cyber Monday, too. So, in case you miss these sales, you'll have another opportunity to cash in on strong deals later in the year.)

Tangled Up in Blue Jeans

We've made it through the height of Back to School shopping season, which means you can start taking advantage of clearance sales for the student staple of denim. However, while we'll see modest discounts this month at about 40% off, these sales will continue into October, and will likely grow stronger. Also in November, many jeans specialists like Levi's could offer their best coupons of the year around Black Friday. Now is a good time to start looking at discounted jeans styles for a wider selection, but if you're not particular, next month will see steeper cuts.

SSD Storage Deals Are Solid

We've mentioned before that Solid State Drives (SSDs) are on a constant downward price trajectory, but this trend really ramped up this summer. The number of Editors' Choice deals nearly doubled each month since the spring, and we continue to see new all-time low prices for both specific models and overall drive capacities. newegg is overwhelmingly the store to go to for such deals, but Micro Center, Amazon, TigerDirect, and Buy.com have all also had strong offerings.

Get Your Caffeine Fix for Free

Are you a devout coffee drinker? Then make sure to mark September 29 in your calendar, as several food chains will offer a free cup o' Joe in honor of National Coffee Day. Last year, Krispy Kreme, Waffle House, 7-11, and Caribou Coffee all offered a special promotion to celebrate, and it's possible that other chains and local cafes will do the same.

New Price Points for the iPhone

Supposedly, the newest Apple iPhone will be announced on September 12, making it very likely that the company will slice prices on its older models. If the newest iPhone pricing mimics that of its siblings-made-obsolete, then the iPhone 4S could drop to $99. And the iPhone 4 will possibly stick around as an even more affordable model — a need that the iPhone 3GS will likely leave open as it is expected to be discontinued.

A Slew of iPhone Accessories, New and Old

Supposedly the iPhone 5 will feature a completely new dock connector, which means all existing iPhone accessories will become outdated overnight. Old accessories will then see aggressive deals as stores try to clear their shelves for brand new, full-price replacements. If you're upgrading to the iPhone 5, consider at least waiting a few months to add to your collection of dock accessories so that you can avoid paying retail price.

Rock-Bottom Airfare Rates

The cheapest airfare deals we saw throughout all of last year came in late September, when both Vision Airlines and Spirit Airlines offered 1-way fares for a whopping $1. Not a fan of those budget airlines? JetBlue also offered one of its best sales in September, dropping rates to just $29 each way. (However, we have seen JetBlue fares at this price at various other times in the year.) Of course, in order to take advantage of these rock-bottom prices, you have to be a lucky or flexible flyer to make use of the restricted routes and times.

Keep an Eye Out for Hot Sunglasses Sales

If you managed to make it through the summer without buying a new pair of sunglasses, you're about to be rewarded; according to our deals last year, the best storewide sunglasses sales popped up in September, as well as in November and December. For September in particular, look to Oakley Vault, Sunglass Hut, REI, 6pm, and Endless.com for discounted styles. Last September, Oakley Vault's sunglasses sale was the best the merchant offered all year.

Patio Furniture Deals Are Sitting Pretty

Finally, it's a great month to buy patio furniture! September will see an increase in the sheer number of outdoor furniture sales and deals that discount the seasonal outdoor items. October will see an uptick in the level of Editors' Choice caliber prices. But since several patio sets and gardening items from Sears, Amazon, and other merchants hit their lowest prices in October — and will be priced significantly lower than we had seen them over the summer —what's another few weeks of waiting?

Wait and See With Tablets

We're on a path toward seeing a very interesting, competitive budget-friendly tablet market in the coming weeks and months. It would benefit the consumer to hold off on purchases at the moment; increased competition could likely yield deals that either cut prices or bundle devices with useful media credits or gift cards. Amazon is rumored to be debuting the Kindle Fire 2 in a few days, resulting in a new lower price on the original Kindle, and come mid-month Apple may announce an "iPad mini".

Big Screen 3D HDTVs Show Some Promise

Fall will soon be upon us and if you can refrain from any HDTV purchases over the next two months, you're bound to see the year's best HDTV deals come November. However, if you're in dire need of a new HDTV, you'll want to look at name-brand 55" 3D LCD HDTVs, as those are seeing the most action these days in terms of deals.

Over the summer, 55" 3D HDTVs dipped under the $1,000 mark, a price we had't seen since Black Friday 2011. Then, in early August, prices hit an all-time low, as we saw the 2012 LG 55LM7600 hit $949. While we still recommend waiting for the holidays, shoppers who can't wait until Black Friday should look at 55" 3D LCD HDTVs under $1,000.

Ivy Bridge Laptops on the Move Again

Although back to school sales have generally come to an end, Ivy Bridge-based laptops are in a price free-fall. Whereas 15" Ivy Bridge systems debuted at $1,000 in April, they closed out August at $480 — a price drop of over 50%. We expect to see even more aggressive deals as Microsoft preps systems for its Windows 8 launch in late October; shoppers would be wise to wait a few more weeks to see the best laptop deals.

Again, if you can't wait, looks for 15" Ivy Bridge systems between $480 and $550. Anything under $480 and you'll know you're buying a machine at an all-time low.

Meanwhile, Mac fans who live near a Fry's Electronics store are in luck as the electronics retailer has been offering Apple's 13" MacBook Air (Ivy Bridge model) for $999 with in-store pickup. That's $200 under Apple's retail price and the lowest price we've seen this summer for the 13" model. Better understanding of these trends means a steady stream of savings for consumers.

So, at dealnews, we've mined our extensive archives of sales, coupons, and individual products from the past few summers to find patterns that can guide your buying experience in August. Here's what we found. (See also: Shopping Calendar: The Best Time to Buy Anything)

Back to School Shopping Heats Up

According to our deals from last year, August is the best summer month to get discounts on back-to-school items. Numerous deals that we saw in July will continue in August, with most offering even deeper discounts. For example, college-friendly apparel retailers like Aeropostale and Abercrombie & Fitch offered their best sale of the year (up until that point) during the month of August, and we expect to see similar trends in 2012.

Also keep an eye out for dorm furniture from retailers like Walmart — which offered futons for as low as $89 last year, as well as computer desks for $34 — and special sales on backpacks and computer cases for under $10. As for back-to-school laptops, consider taking advantage of special promotions that bundle your purchase with gift cards, gaming consoles, and printers.

Carnival Cruises Come in at Fantastic Prices

Savvy shoppers looking to book a vacation would do well to consider a cruise, specifically one from Carnival Cruises. We have consistently seen from Carnival some of the lowest prices possible on tropical routes to locations like the Caribbean. In fact, 41% of cruise deals this year have been from Carnival. If you're browsing for a cruise, you'd do well to start with the provider that caters to travelers looking for a party-like atmosphere.

Summer Apparel on Clearance

As we near the end of the summer season, retailers will begin to get even more aggressive with their clothing discounts as they try to make room for autumn apparel. In fact, in the final days of July, we saw numerous Editors' Choice deals trickle in that offered enormous stacking coupons that took an extra 30% to 50% off already-discounted sale items. We expect to see much of the same in August; last year, Eddie Bauer, Converse, French Connection, Dickies, Patagonia, Nautica, Kenneth Cole, and Old Navy offered among the best sales of the month.

Last Chance for Swimwear

Although you can lump this into the general summer apparel category, it's important to note that after August, you'll be hard-pressed to find any swimwear deals. For the past two years, the number of swim sales have significantly decreased come September, suggesting that most stores do a good job of clearing their inventory in August. Look for sales that take up to 70% off or more from retailers likeVictoria's Secret, Lands' End, and Kohl's.

Wait Until September or October for Patio Sets

We mentioned last month that although you will see many sales for summer patio furniture, a savvy shopper would benefit by waiting until September or October for the best deals. Several patio sets and gardening items from Sears, Amazon, and other merchants hit their lowest prices in October, as they were available for significantly less than we had seen them at over the summer.

Hold Off on the Kindle Fire

There are rumors that Amazon will be releasing the Kindle Fire 2 in the coming weeks. This means that it's not a smart time to buy the current Fire tablet. As we postulated earlier this month, Amazon will likely debut the updated Fire for $199, to remain competitive with the new Google Nexus 7, but keep the original around at a lower price. We predict it will drop to at least $169, if not lower.

Wait for Discounts on Older iPhones

Speaking of rumored tech releases, here's another to keep in mind: Supposedly, Apple is releasing the iPhone 5 in late September or early October. If you're an Apple fan that always needs the latest and greatest, you'll want to hold off on an iPhone purchase for the time being. But even those who don't mind an older model should hold tight; after the last update to the iPhone 4S, Apple kept its 3GS and 4 around at reduced prices. This time around, the now-free 3GS will probably be discontinued, but it's very likely that the 4 and 4S will stick around and see newly-reduced starting prices.

iPhone Dock Accessories Provide Good Deals for Some, Bad Ones for Others

If you are in fact considering buying the iPhone 5, you'll want to hold off on buying any new dock accessories as well. Although in the past these have generally been universal use across iPhone models, the newest Apple smartphone is rumored to have a smaller, 19-pin dock connector. Although Apple will likely sell an adapter, you can bet it won't be cheap. Plus, there's a possibility that other brands will be forced to buy a chip from Apple in order to make their own accessories and adapters compatible, so who knows if stores like Meritline will have the typical uber-cheap alternatives?

If you have no interest in upgrading to the iPhone 5 though, and you're content with your older model (or if you plan to buy one of them at the aforementioned lower prices), then the coming months will actually be a great time to take advantage of retailers that are trying to clear out their stock of soon-to-be-outdated accessories.

Grill Deals Are Red Hot in August

If you've waited patiently to buy a grill this year, you may be rewarded with a much larger pool of deals to choose from. The number of grill deals we saw last year in August was 30% higher than that of July, suggesting that retailers begin taking more widespread cuts this month. Look to vendors like hhgregg, Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Lowe's, Sears, and Walmart for sales and discounts.

46" HDTVs Remain at All-Time Lows, 3D Shows Some Promise

The final weeks of summer generally don't see many notable HDTV sales. However, if you're shopping for a new HDTV this August, there are two categories you can't afford to miss. First, name-brand 46" 1080p LCD HDTVs are at an all-time low. In July we saw a 46" Samsung hit $449. That's a $51 drop from June's best deal for a TV this size and the least-expensive 46" name-brand TV we've ever seen. Shoppers should look for deals at or below $449.

Likewise, 55" 3D HDTVs also experienced a price dip in July, dropping to $999 (a price we hadn't seen since Black Friday 2011). As a result we recommend TV shoppers look at 55" 3D LCD HDTVs at or below $999.

Take Advantage of Back to School Laptop Bundles

Even if you're not going to college, your chances of scoring a laptop bundle in August are pretty high. While some deals may require a valid .edu email, others (such as deals from newegg, OfficeMax, and the Sony Store) do not require any credentials. Keep your eye on laptop and console bundles as well as laptop and printer bundles. These deals will stretch your dollar further and get you two products for the price of one. If you prefer an individual laptop, Ivy Bridge-based systems hit a new low in July ($548), so we recommend looking at 14" to 16" Ivy Bridge systems from Lenovo, Dell, and HP in that price range.

As far as standalone notebooks go, Sandy Bridge-based desktop replacements deals have been stagnant for the last two months (with prices at $800), so we wouldn't be surprised if these systems took a slight dip in August in preparation for back to school sales. And lastly, Apple's MacBook Air (Sandy Bridge model) has seen some aggressive discounts this summer. If you don't mind having last year's model, look for prices on the 11" MacBook Air 2011 model starting at $740. If you've had your eyes on the new Retina MacBook Pro, deals on that machine have hit as low as $1,999, though they typically sell out fast, so jump on the first Retina deal you see.

Set up an email alert with dealnews now to keep abreast of any and all of these best buys in August. However, despite their market dominance, LCDs have yet to give plasma TVs their final death blow. And that's a good thing, because when it comes to pricing (specifically on 50" 1080p sets), plasma TVs trounce their LCD competitors.

In fact, in the past year, not once has a 52" LED-backlit LCD sold for less than a 50" plasma. (Due to the scarcity of 52" plasmas and the lack of 50" LCDs, we compared 50" plasmas to 52" LCDs.) Sure, you're getting 2" less screen real estate with the plasma set, so it's natural for them to be cheaper. But deals on 52" LED LCDs have remained in the $1,000+ range, whereas deals on 50" plasmas have for the most part remained under $800 — a significant amount of savings for losing just 2" of display. Shipping prices (where applicable) were factored into the pricing in our data. Points on the graph represented by a "-" indicate there were no deals for that month.

So, if you're longing to make a big-screen TV the centerpiece to your home theater system, consider the deal-rich plasma option.

The Pros and Cons to Plasma

Like all technologies, plasma TVs have their advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, plasma TVs have consistently outperformed LCDs with regards to picture quality. They deliver deeper blacks and don't suffer from motion blurring. In fact, CNET's best HDTV of 2011 is a plasma TV. So as far as image quality is concerned, plasma reigns supreme.

Now for the bad news. Unlike today's razor-thin LCDs, plasma TVs are generally bulkier. They're also known for using more power than LCDs, although many of today's newer plasmas meet stricter Energy Star guidelines.

And while it's true that some manufacturers have pulled out of the plasma market, it's also true that many companies such as Panasonic and Samsung remain big proponents of plasma TVs, showcasing new models every year at the Consumer Electronics Show. So in the end, the only true con to plasma TVs is their slightly bulkier size.

What Prices and Features Can You Expect?

Today's plasmas pack the same features found in modern-day LCD TVs, like app store support, 3D processing, Netflix streaming, Internet access, and more. Plasmas with 720p resolution are roughly $100 cheaper than those with 1080p resolution. And for reference, July's best plasma deal came in at $770 for the 2011 Panasonic TCP50S30 1080p plasma with built-in WiFi.

As we approach Black Friday, we expect to see TV prices plummet across the board, but 50" plasma TVs in particular will reach astonishing lows as they try to beat April's all-time low ($599 at Fry's). Compare that to the best deal we've seen on a 52" LED LCD ($979 at BeachCamera via eBay Daily Deals), and you'll see where the real savings are.

Conclusion

If you're in the market for a big-screen TV, you'll get the most bang for you buck from a 50" plasma. Sure, LED-backlit LCDs are hot right now, and they might even look sleeker from a design perspective, but on average plasma TVs still outperform LCDs. And with their much lower price, there's simply no reason not to invest in them.

Ready to put this information to use? As part of a process to improve media, any TVs still using rabbit ears will need to get with the program; and you'll need to get a converter box. By signing up for the Coupon Program, you can get credit towards the purchase of an eligible converter box and avoid much of the cost of the required upgrade to digital. Here's how it works, and what you can expect from the program. (See also: 8 Alternatives to Cable TV That Will Keep You Entertained)

I signed up for the Coupon Program a few months ago via the official link at www.DTV2009.gov (Note that this is the only approved link at this time.) After that, I forgot all about the conversion. Today, however, I received my official "coupons" with directions for redemption. Here's what my envelope contained:

Two "coupons" towards the purchase of an eligible converter box. Each household can sign up for a maximum of two boxes. I would recommend you ask for both if you think you will need them. The coupons were actually cards that looked like debit cards, and they cannot be replaced if lost or stolen.

A list of stores where you can use your coupons. While many big-box stores like Best Buy, Radioshack, and Walmart are accepting them at most location, there was a computer-generated list of stores close to me that will also take them. This is nice, as it included some mom-and-pop shops near me that I would have never considered.

Updates and FAQ's. In case you aren't sure what to do with coupon, there is a short explanation of the program included in both English and Spanish. There is also a list of eligible converter boxes by make and model number, and some very interesting FAQ's concerning the coupons. The long and short of it states that the coupons expire within 90 days after they are mailed. They also are only good for one converter box per coupon. (So if you use your $40 credit towards a $30 box, you don't get any cash back.) Additionally, they are good for one use per card. The cards are ready to go, and don't need to be activated.

Any other questions? Direct them to the www.DTV2009.gov website. They can give additional information not included in the brochure, as well as give you instructions concerning low-power stations. Not signed up yet? What are you waiting for? The website will tell you if you need a converter and how to get one before the transition date of February 17, 2009.

This article is from Linsey Knerl of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
