I know that got your attention.

Periodically, eBay and Microsoft's Live.com run a joint promotion to award you cashback. It's plausibly beneficial for them because it drives traffic and ad revenue to Live amidst Google's dominance. Whatever the reasons, here's basically how it works:

Sign up for a Live.com account.

Do a Live.com search for a keyword match like "bullion". A special link notifying you of a % cashback offer appears.

Click the link and purchase an eligible item — so far, they've been "Buy It Now" with PayPal, not regular auctions.

Cashback either gets awarded within a 60-day window, or in some cases (apparently random), instantly.

You can read the terms and conditions, which include a limit of total cashback and transactions.

Too good to be true?

At one point, I was skeptical — 35% cashback!? — but this is from eBay and Microsoft, not some shady fly-by-night operation. Alas, today the cashback is lower, at 10%, but up from 8% in days earlier. (But down from 14% that.) How do I know?

Use these tools

There's a useful tool called MS Live.com eBay Cashback % Notifier, thanks to a "Waffle S.S." aka Abe Voelker. It does what it claims: enter a target cashback value and your email address. When it hits or exceeds that mark, you'll be notified as I was today:

If you'd rather not do that, you can setup a Deal Alert at SlickDeals.net which'll inform you of epic threads like this.

I've earned over $600 cashback since my purchases last year — heck, that's enough to buy a Mac mini, or a combination of things you deem valuable. Each of us has our priorities; just don't go spending on eBay without this advantage.

Tips

Many retail stores, including Buy.com and Tiger Direct, and specialty goods like Nova Musik, have eBay presences in addition to their dot-com webshops. Compare the prices, and if they and other factors are equivalent, you'll save by buying through eBay with cashback.

With competing listings around the same total price range, focus on where shipping is included in the "Buy It Now" price and (often) advertised as "free shipping". Why? Because cashback applies to the item price but not to shipping. Try asking a seller if they'd be willing to make a change for you.

Watch cashback phases like a hawk, because when it ascends to a lucrative percentage, many eBay sellers jack up their prices to nullify any cashback advantage.

On occasion, some keywords return higher cashback than others. Stay on top of these, too.

Don't hold out too long if it's a matter of a few dollars; it's a sort of gamble, as the people waiting for 14% cashback to climb to 20% or higher recently found out when it dropped to 8%.

Have you saved big with eBay's Live.com cashback? It’s the one that’s programmed into my typing hand more than any other website, and even though it fails me at times, I still lean on it in times of uncertainty. It was just recently, however, that I started to expand my search world, grabbing at new straws to help meet my research needs. These three seem very promising, and are rather fun, as well!

SearchMe Visual Search (see graphic at top of article) - I’m a visual person. I love graphics, previews, and accurate mouse-overs. Is it a surprise that SearchMe came through for some unique results with full-color, full-page results? Simply type a term and then choose the relevant category you wish to explore further. (Not wanting to limit your results? Click “Search All.“) Immediately some of the most unique website screenshots will appear in a virtual Flash-driven rolodex. Flip through them like a book or stack them like magazines for viewing later (this info is stored on your hard drive, so don’t include anything private!) Video buffs can raid the most qualified YouTube results by utilizing the “Video” search engine (the same goes for images.)

Hakia - Do you ever wish you had a personal search assistant designed to sort through the garbage in your search results? Hakia , a truly effective semantic-based search tool, does just that. While limited at the moment in its Beta version, I’ve been very impressed so far. Hakia uses three criteria to qualify its search results: 1) it must comes from a credible source recommended by librarians 2) it is the most recent information available 3) it is absolutely relevant to the query. How does it compare to Google search results? Just check out this sample for search term “Is there any remedy to tuberculosis?” The verified results appear first in Hakia (highlighted in red), followed by regular results. In Google, they are all mixed together, organized by statistical ranking. Curious to find out about others with similar searches? Just click on the icon for “Meet Others who asked the same query” for chat boards relevant to your search.

SortFix - This nifty tool came to me as a tip from Mary Ellen Bates at Bates Information Services (for updated search new, check out her monthly tip.) It’s a hybrid off all my favorite applications (search engine, thesaurus, dictionary, and comparison between websites.) How does it work? Simply visit SortFix.com and type your search term. Upon hitting “enter”, you’ll get Google results, with neat tabs for comparing results in Yahoo and the dmoz open directory project. Now it gets really cool. Using Drag-and-Drop features, you can refine your searches using their suggested “Power Words”. Not feeling the results? Add or remove search words easily by placing them in the “Add” or “Remove” boxes. (It reminds of those magnetic word poetry kits.) Use the dictionary for more fun, and if you’re really daring, you can sign up for advanced features!

Normal people collect stamps, spoons, or trading cards. I collect great search tools. But if she were playing poker at the same time, while attacking a Pokemon and marrying The Bachelor, well, the results would be unreal. But what do you care?

If you're a blogger, or a small business, or a huge business, or an entrepreneur, it should matter a great deal. Because knowing what people are searching for on a daily basis can mean more money. Especially in the blogging/adsense business, when traffic to your site can generate some very nice income for you and your family.

Of course, you don't want to be hooking people with a popular topic and then writing about something else. Remember the old "FREE SEX" headline, with the copy saying "now that we've got your attention, let's talk life insurance." But if you keep your finger on the pulse, and write about some of the most popular topics on the web (or aim products at the people searching for those topics) then you will literally be the goose that laid the golden egg.

So, where do you find out about searching habits?
There are several resources out there. Some are quite specific, some more vague. I've listed my TOP 5. If you know of better ones or new ones, please let us all know in the comments box.

1 - DOGPILE SEARCHSPY
This one is funky. It's not the best for giving you an overall picture of the week's searches, but I like it because it's in real-time. You can literally see what people are typing in as you watch the web page. You can choose from Filtered (family friendly) or Unfiltered (watch out, there's porno about) and the results are instantly displayed on your screen in a scrolling format. Here's what I got just now. (Oh, and Metaspy has a very similar service here .)

2 - THE LYCOS 50
A veteran in the searching business, this Lycos tool shows you a regularly updated picture of who is searching for what, along with other categories like Movers & Shakers. This was the inspiration behind the Frankenstein's monster above. Lycos seems to be dominated by Paris, Poker and WWE every week. Check out the top 10 the week ending May 19th.

3 - AOL HOT SEARCHES
Personally, I have no time for AOL. But millions of people do and it's important to know what they're searching for, too. As with anything by AOL, it's dumbed-down but the search data was interesting. Ann Coulter at #1 this week? One question...why? Yikes. I don't know why I don't use Zeitgeist more often, even the name is great. Google's Adwords tool is also a handy resource. And UrgentClick has some good keyword data, too.

So, go forth an use this information to get more visitors to your sites and more consumers of your products.
