Of course, not everybody spends them in the same way. Let's face it: Some people are better at managing time than others. And in a world where time equals money, it's often those with the best time management skills who are raking in the dough.

It's not just how we spend our waking hours that counts — our habits pertaining to slumber also affect our income, stamina, success, and productivity.

Read on for our roundup of evening rituals of these famously successful people. Because who wouldn't want to sleep like the fabulously wealthy?

1. Read a book

Bill Gates, who reads around 50 books per year, reserves the last waking hour of his day for reading. Yes, even on the stressful, exhausting days, Gates always makes time before bed for a good book.

If you're wondering why someone like Gates has made this a priority, wonder no more: Not only does reading fuel creativity, it also helps a person de-stress while introducing new perspectives and expanding their knowledge. Hard up for something fresh to read? Here's every book recommendation that Gates, the richest man in the world, has ever shared publicly.

2. Unplug the phone

On the brink of slumber, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg checks her email one last time. Then she turns off her cellphone, signaling an end to the day. Unplugging this way can be "painful," Sandberg has admitted, but she conceded that she has found it to be the key to a good night's sleep. If the phone is on, she's said she is much more likely to be disturbed during the night.

This is a smart habit to take up for yourself. Not only can waking up to check your phone in the middle of the night reduce the quality of your sleep, it can also cause anxiety, according to researchers at California State University.

3. Track your sleep

In complete contradiction to Sandberg's routine, business magnate Elon Musk uses his cellphone to track his sleep. His nightly sleep count averages about six hours, he admitted in a 2015 Reddit AMA. In preparation for this shut-eye, Musk, an avid consumer of coffee and Diet Coke, cuts himself off from caffeine six hours before bedtime.

There are a number of smartphone apps that can help you track and understand your sleep cycles. Experts recommend seven to eight hours for most adults, though the true number is individualistic and likely depends on genetics. Getting enough sleep is critical to a satisfying social life and a high performance career. Here are a few top-rated sleep app options: Sleepbot, Sleep Cycle, and MotionX 24/7.

4. Treat yourself to quiet time

Oprah Winfrey designates 20 minutes at the end of her day for meditation and silent reflection. By allowing herself a regularly scheduled window during which she can decompress, Winfrey says she has reaped more benefits than she ever imagined. "The results have been awesome," she said. "Better sleep. Improved relationships with spouses, children, coworkers … Greater productivity and creativity all around."

We all know how to sit quietly, but meditation takes a little bit more know-how and guidance. That's where a meditation aid can be helpful. Try the smartphone apps Sattva or Buddhify. You can also find guided meditations on YouTube.

5. Skip the wine — soak in the tub

Entrepreneur Arianna Huffington's nighttime routine is ceremonious, and it comes in two stages. The first is simple: Skip the nightcap. Booze before bed can certainly help a person fall asleep, but the quality of that sleep will suffer. Instead, Huffington, who says she endeavors to clock seven or eight hours of shut-eye each night, indulges in a candlelit bath with piping hot water and Epsom salts. Then, after she gets under the covers, she takes a moment to count her blessings.

"I pause to think about the things that I'm grateful for in that moment," she wrote for The Telegraph. "That way my blessings, not my worries, get the closing scene of the night."

This article is from Brittany Lyte of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. As a person who works from home and knows what damage slumps can do to motivation and productivity, I’ve wanted to create a better way to do things. The few times I’ve found myself up before the sun turned out to be very good days where I truly felt accomplished.

But saying I’ll wake up earlier when I go to bed at night only leads to my snoozing through several alarms the next morning. Surely many people experience the same defeat. But I am still motivated to try and change my undisciplined ways, and I was happy to discover that waking up earlier actually has many benefits. (See also: How to Naturally Reset Your Sleep Cycle in One Night)

Advantages of an Early Wake Up Call

As a writer with a family, a lot of my evenings are filled with constant interruptions that leave me frustrated and unproductive. At one time I was a night person who preferred to sleep all day, but the older I get, the earlier I find myself dropping into bed exhausted. Getting up earlier in the day has distinct benefits and can change the direction of your entire day.

Less-Stressful Start

Consider how many days you wake up in a rush, trying to get everyone out the door and getting yourself to work on time, which leaves you irritated and exhausted before lunch. By getting up earlier, you give yourself the pleasure of a more relaxed start. You can grab some time alone to fully wake up and get a grip on your day before rushing into life with everyone else.

More Productivity

In line with having more time for you, early risers also tend to be more productive. Even with just 30 extra minutes a day, a lot can be done. The dishwasher can be loaded, laundry folded, dinner ingredients prepared.

More Reliability

My grandmother used to say certain people in the family would be late to their own funerals because they were habitually late for everything else. By rising earlier, you can be more accomplished before leaving home and arrive at your destination without the rush. You may see better opportunities at work and become known as a reliable, dependable person rather than a harried, stressed-out mess.

Better Health

Waking up earlier allows you to finally have the time to eat a healthy breakfast and fuel your body for the day. Giving your body time to wake up and digest your food properly is necessary for good health. The chugging-coffee-shoving-a-bagel-down-your-throat breakfast you’re used to can become a thing of the past.

5 Ways to Roll Out of Bed Earlier

You can make it happen. Here's what to do.

1. Start Incrementally

If you want to wake an hour earlier than you usually do moving forward, don’t try to do it all at once. Start with just five minutes and build up from there. When you go to bed each night, think about what you can accomplish in that first 5-10 minutes. It will get easier to reach your hour-earlier goal within a few weeks, and eventually it will become a habit.

2. Adopt a Bedtime Routine

You may find it hard to wake up earlier because you find it so hard to go to bed at night. You’ll need to start cutting out the distractions in the hour leading up to bedtime, including television and caffeine. Try reading a book before bed rather than watching cable or sitting with a to-do list for the next day. By implementing a bedtime routine in your life to ensure you get enough sleep, you will find it easier to rise earlier.

3. Don’t Snooze

Most people put their alarms conveniently right next to their beds at night, making it too easy to slam the snooze button every five minutes. Try moving your clock to a table on the other side of the room. Or get a more annoying alarm clock that doesn’t have a snooze option.

4. Prepare the Night Before

Even with extra time in the morning, it can make you crazy to face a thousand things to do each time you wake up. Start preparing the night before for an easier morning. Have your clothing selected, your lunch packed, and your car keys in a safe location. This way you can get up with your coffee and quiet time to look forward to each day.

5. Reward Yourself

While the extra time in the day can be rewarding enough, don’t forget to pat yourself on the back for achieving your goal. Pick a morning or two a week that is all for you. Rather than getting household chores done, use your early morning time to dive into that book you’ve wanted to read, take a long soak in the tub, or watch your favorite show on the DVR without interruption. It will give you something to look forward to each week and remind you of your success.

Much of adopting a new way of life is mind over matter. Continue to realize the positives your changes are bringing about and find the motivation to keep moving forward with positive changes in your life.

Did you switch from being a night owl to an early riser? Changing my routine was the answer to having better days and being happier overall.

If you’re in a similar situation — where you just can’t seem to get it together — consider these benefits that I’ve experienced that will hopefully motivate you to make a change, too. (See also: But I Don't Want to! Secrets to Self-Motivation)

Increased Energy

A simple change like altering my diet to include healthier foods and eliminating the pizza and burgers has made a big difference. I wake up earlier without feeling run down. In fact, I felt so energetic this morning that I went for a mile and a half run at 7 a.m., which is totally out of character. I’m noticing that I have more stamina to make it through the workday too, whereas before I would experience fatigue in the late afternoons, especially if my lunch was heavy.

Increased Productivity

Because of the level of increased energy I have, I’m more motivated during the day and really getting things done. I’m completing projects ahead of time instead of waiting until the last minute, which leads to more time that I can spend cultivating new clients for my small business. Another benefit to increased productivity is that I can relax easier at night because I don’t have a million things on my mind that I should have done but didn’t.

Increased Creativity

When I’m in a slump, my head is not where it needs to be — and that’s detrimental to my creative profession. But the increased productivity and energy have a direct correlation to increased creativity. My mind is more open now because I’m not thinking about being sad and concentrating on the shoulda-coulda-wouldas of my life. Rather, I’m changing my routine so that the positive aspects of my life — along with my creativity — can flourish.

Feelings of Happiness

I’m a longtime sufferer of depression, for which I take medication. The meds help, of course, but I also took some time recently to think about the reasons why I feel depressed. Is it because of situations that happen to me or because of situations I created? After a bit of soul searching, I realized that I’m unhappy about several things over which I have ultimate control — like my weight, for instance. I’ve always been a thin guy, but I’ve put on some pounds over the past few years. I stopped going to events to which I was invited, and many times I refuse to take photos because I feel fat. That’s not the person I want to be. I want to be that happy, outgoing guy that I once was. After identifying one of the reasons that contributed to my feelings of worthlessness, I put the plan in motion to change. As a result I’m increasingly happier because I’m taking steps toward self-improvement I can be proud of.

Enjoying New Experiences

When I was in the same old routine of working from home and living like a shut-in, I missed out on a lot of activities and events. As I just mentioned, I didn’t want to go out because I didn’t feel good about myself. But now that I’m starting to feel better about myself because I changed my routine, I’m participating in more activities and meeting new people, all of which are pleasurable.

Being More Enjoyable to Be Around

If I didn’t want to be around myself before I changed my routine, I’m sure nobody else did either. Who wants to hang out with someone who’s depressed and whining about things that they can totally change? Definitely not me. So it stands to reason that when I’m in a pleasant mood, the people around me will enjoy my company much more.

How and What to Change

Changing your routine doesn’t have to include the changes that I’m making. Mine are rather serious lifestyle decisions, but if all you need is a small change, by all means, do it your way. There are lots of changes you can make — taking another route to work, altering your reading habits, switching the time of day you go to the gym, establishing date nights to enhance your relationship — the list is endless, really. The most important part of changing your routine is that it somehow makes your life better so you can reap at least a few of the benefits I’ve listed.

Your turn. I’d love to hear about recent changes you’ve made to your routine and the benefits you’ve experienced. Let me know in the comments below.

Like this article? Done.

But the two are essentially different in this — in the first example, I had a lot of creative input in the food that I ate. I created it from the raw materials I had on hand. In the second scenario, I didn't. I ate what had been produced and packaged for me.

There are times — many, many times — when using what has already been produced is much smarter than trying to create your own version. I don't want to build my own house, I just want to live in it. So let me be clear — we're not on a mission to be creative all the time, in every aspect, in every possible way. Quite the opposite, in fact.

It behooves you, if you want to be more creative, to find some key ways to be less creative.

Wha-aaa…? Looks of confusion around the room.

Let me sum up.

The Sum of Your Days

Your day-to-day life is a series of tiny decisions and repetitious acts.

You wake up every day, get dressed, eat breakfast, get in your car, and drive to work. Or you wake up every day, get dressed, snuggle with some cute little kids, come up with breakfast for you and the cute little kids, clean the house, and do some work. Whatever your life consists of, chances are you repeat a lot of your actions day after day.

Am I right?

Yes, I am. Let's continue.

So you do a lot of the same things every day. You either make the same decisions over and over again, or you do these same things out of habit.

You put a few habits in order, and you have a routine. Routines get you through your repetitious daily tasks and save you from making the same decisions over and over again.

And when you're not using your time and energy to decide (again) what you'll wear or whether you'll wash your hair or when you'll work out, you can use your time and energy for other stuff instead.

Stuff like being creative.

The Power of Mundane Routines

Consider this — you deal with thousands of decisions every day. You know from experience that your mental energy is limited. All of us can process only so much before our brains go on auto-pilot or shut off completely. If you know your mental juice is limited, why do you want to waste it on the stuff that isn't so important?

Put some of your life on auto-pilot so that you have more of your mental capability to put into your creative passions.

The routines you build may seem to give you less room for creativity, and they do in a certain sense. When you have routines, certain parts of your life are already decided; all you have to do is follow the routine, and the results will follow without any real creative effort. But putting those routines in place gives you the freedom to be more creative in other areas.

Like this article?
