Not only did receiving a board game ensure that we would be spending time together as a family, but I also loved how new games could teach me different ways of looking at the world, and managing money in particular.

Consider gifting these board games to your kids to get them interested in investing, saving, and spending wisely. (See also: How to Use the Holidays to Teach Kids About Money)

1. Acquire

For 2-6 players, ages 12 and up

Acquire is based on the idea of creating a super city, wherein each player tries to invest strategically in various businesses, including entertainment, food, fashion, marketing, and other major industries. Throughout gameplay, the various "venture capitalists" compete to build the city and try to own the majority shares in the most lucrative businesses. You make money by forming, merging, expanding, and acquiring businesses, and by buying stock at the right time — which makes this game an excellent introduction to how investing works. Whoever has the most money at the end of the game wins.

2. Allowance

For 2-4 players, ages 5-11

As players make their way around the Allowance board, they can earn money by doing chores, starting their own businesses, earning interest on their savings accounts, and of course, by collecting their allowance each time they go "home." On the other hand, players can also spend money at the mall, at garage sales, or simply by losing it out of their pockets. The first player to save up $20 wins the game. Allowance comes with realistic looking play money, and helps teach young children everything from how to make change and count out money to how to save their pennies. (See also: 6 Fun Games That Teach Your Kids About Money)

3. Black Gold

For 2-5 players, ages 13 and up

Imagine you are trying to make your fortune in the oil fields of Texas in 1922. That's the basis for the oil prospecting game Black Gold, where between two and five prospectors compete by exploring the terrain for oil wells, surveying the possible sites, and building derricks. You can earn money by transporting your oil to one of three companies and earning the right to sell at auction. Game play includes bidding, bluffing, and strategizing — which can help your kids learn good negotiation skills while they try to glean the most wealth from their oil wells.

4. Pit

For 3-8 players, ages 7 and up

This game, which was first introduced all the way back in 1904, helps to recreate the now (mostly) defunct open-outcry trading one used to find on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Pit is a card game wherein each player attempts to corner the market in a particular commodity. The winner of any particular hand is the first one to collect all of one commodity, and points are awarded based on the value of the cornered commodity. The overall winner is the first player to score 500 points. Not only will this game give you a chance to shout and wave your arms a la Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy in Trading Places, but it will help you to better understand exactly how commodities traders do their jobs — even if it's mostly handled by computers these days.

5. Stockpile

For 2-5 players, ages 13 and up

Helping your kids understand how the stock market works can be an uphill battle, until you break out this board game. With Stockpile, each player is a stock market investor. The game helps make it clear that everyone knows a little something about the stock market, but no one knows everything. That means each player receives one piece of insider information, but there are plenty of unknowns facing each investor as well. You must consider multiple factors when buying or selling a stock, just as you would in real-world trading. Whoever has the most money at the end of the game wins, but everyone will certainly learn important investment strategy skills from this game.

6. Tin Goose

For 3-5 players, ages 10 and up

In Tin Goose, it's the early days of commercial airlines, and each player is attempting to build a large, profitable airline. You are helped by the fact that planes are becoming safer and more fuel efficient over time. But even as your planes get better, you will also face more and more disastrous potential setbacks such as crashes, worker strikes, and spikes in oil prices. This game will help teach how to balance the emotions of greed and fear while strategizing how to build your business in competition with others.

Like this article? Self-care should be a priority for you, and it doesn't even have to cost you anything. Here are six ways to take good care of yourself so that you're able to take care of others during the most wonderful time of the year. (See also: 14 Smartphone Apps That Make Self-Care a Snap)

1. A better night's sleep

A good night's sleep gives you a strong start to the day, and while there are loads of pricey high-tech sleep gadgets, there are plenty of inexpensive, yet luxurious ways to ease you into slumber, too. Cozy pajamas, a fluffy robe, toasty slippers, and a weighted blanket, are just a few budget-friendly gifts that you totally deserve.

You can also spritz your pillows with homemade lavender water. Just add 10 drops of lavender essential oil to two ounces of water in a small spray bottle. Ask Alexa, or other home device to play nature sounds for you, or download one of the many free apps on your phone that has soothing sounds to lull you to sleep. (See also: 9 Frugal Gifts for the Person Who Needs a Nap)

2. Coffee and other warm beverages

Grabbing a no-frills coffee at a cafe, to say nothing of a fancier drink, costs much more than buying gourmet grounds to brew at home. That also goes for tea, hot chocolate, hot apple cider, and any other warm winter drink. And what's better than grabbing a hot cup of your favorite drink and curling up in front of the fire or classic holiday movie? During this magical time of year, there are plenty of options for gourmet coffee to buy and make at home for pennies on the dollar of what you'd pay at a restaurant or coffee shop. (See also: Here's How Rich You'd Be if You Stopped Drinking Expensive Coffee)

3. Time outdoors

Even though the temperatures are dropping, getting some fresh air helps reduce stress, and provide an energy boost. Bundle up and go for a walk before work, at lunch, or on your way home. It doesn't have to be for a set amount of time, either. Just go until you feel like you're ready to head back inside. And any time spent out in nature won't cost you a thing. (See also: 6 Outdoor Adventures That Don't Cost a Dime)

4. The gift of giving

Many organizations are having special volunteer events to prepare Christmas baskets, wrap presents for kids, and perform numerous other services for those who need our help. Put aside some time or a bit of your holiday budget to give back. I have some relatives who prefer to receive donations to their favorite charities in lieu of Christmas gifts, and I'm always happy to oblige. The feeling you get from helping those less fortunate is better than most tangible gifts you will ever receive. (See also: 8 Charities You Can Trust With Your Holiday Donations)

5. Plenty of healthy foods

Those holiday parties and traditional meals are coming. In these weeks leading up to them, do a little pretox with plenty of fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and lean proteins. One friend of mine takes "pretox" so seriously that she goes vegan before the holidays are in full swing. She finds that she loses a little bit of weight before the holidays and then can enjoy all of her favorite foods without feeling guilty. Pack your meals with healthy ingredients and reap the benefits of enjoying a well-balanced diet, at least until the candy canes get handed out. (See also: 13 Fantastic Lettuce-Free Salads)

6. A motivated new year

In the past, I've made long lists of things I was resolved to do in the new year. This year, I chose one big goal — to get my novel published — and I focused my creative energy to make that happen. With that success of a focused goal for this year, I've started to think about the one thing I'd like to accomplish for 2018. I'm using these last months of the year to form a plan one small piece at a time.

Focusing your time on setting goals for the new year will keep you in a hopeful, positive mindset to end the current year with. And it costs you absolutely nothing to motivate yourself!

Like this article? That friend who seems to be permanently on vacation, and whose Instagram feed is full of photos of them in exotic locations doing exciting things.

Short of buying them a round-the-world ticket, how do you choose a gift for someone who's been there, done that, and bought the T-shirt without breaking the bank? Here are 15 affordable gift ideas for travel lovers.

1. Filter water bottle

Water quality varies wildly the world over, so many travelers find the safest option is to only drink bottled water wherever they go. But buying bottled water can be costly, and it also has an extremely detrimental impact on the environment. A filter water bottle will mean they never have to waste money on bottled water again while actively reducing the amount of plastic they're using. Many designs are also waterproof and shockproof making them perfect for taking to the beach or getting the party going around the pool. They're also able to survive those inevitable bumps received from being thrown in the backpack. Just be sure to get the lighter ones as no traveler wants to pack around a 5-pound speaker! The perfect way for any travel lover to log their voyages.

9. A nice journal

They say that everyone has a book inside of them, and all travelers certainly have a story or two to tell. Why not set them on the way to literary stardom with the gift of a beautiful journal where they can compile all of their exciting adventures in one place? A personalized, leather-bound journal will be well received and give them a charming space to record all of their thoughts and experiences.

10. Tech tacos

Tech tacos are the ultimate organization tool for every expeditioner. Somehow, wires always manage to get tangled up in a bag, no matter how neatly you pack them. They can avoid that hassle by using these tech tacos for all of their electrical lead. Simply loop around the body and snap shut and they'll never have to detangle a cable again.

11. Personalized passport cover

For the frequent international traveler, a passport is a prized possession. Help them keep it safe with a personalized passport cover that you can design with touches you know they'll love. Get their name or initials engraved on it, a photo printed on it, or even a funky pattern.

12. Mini wrap around tripod

The discerning traveler will love a mounting device for a camera or phone that will attach itself to virtually anything. It has lots of advantages over a traditional tripod, including being far easier to carry around, and also extremely versatile while still providing a stable base for the perfect snap. GorillaPods are the most popular option, but be sure to get the right size to support whatever type of camera your friend has.

13. Combination padlock

A combination padlock is something that every traveler should take with them when heading off on an excursion. They're the single most effective way of keeping your valuables safe in multiple situations. Use them on a bag or suitcase during transit, secure a locker or wardrobe with them when in a hotel or hostel, and even to keep a day pack safely fastened. Use a TSA approved lock, which will allow transportation security officials to open your lock to inspect your luggage without breaking the lock.

14. Toiletry bag

Don't bother trying to find a space in your shared hostel bathroom sink to hold your toothbrush, comb, face wash, etc. Hang your travel toiletry bag on back of the door or the curtain rail and you've got everything you need within hand's reach.

15. Document holder

Every frequent flyer needs somewhere safe to put their travel documents when they're jetting off to some far-flung destination. It's easy to misplace passports, boarding passes, insurance documents, vaccination records, or visas if you're not organized, so help a friend out by gifting them a document holder. Let's face it, this year has been pretty tiring. Maybe they need a nap. Heck, we all could probably use one.

Napping can help you recharge, zap stress, and boost your mood. Who doesn't need that, especially during the holiday season? Let's encourage napping, and enjoy the benefits. Here are nine items that will make someone sleepy just by looking at them.

1. Cozy Blanket

I bought a super-soft fleece throw for my husband, and when I'm not stealing it, he's using it to nap. Tossing one over a chair looks homey.

2. Sleepy Tea

Chamomile tea is known for making people sleepy. According to the science, "Sedative effects may be due to the flavonoid, apigenin, that binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain." Or, it could just be the relaxing ritual of making a cup of tea that makes the eyelids heavy.

3. Eye Mask

For the light sleeper in your life, consider getting them an eye mask. The added darkness can keep that pesky sun from ruining a napping mood.

4. Nap-on-the-Go Accessories

Slightly germaphobic, I don't like using the blankets or pillows provided by the airlines. Who touched that? Ewww. So if you know a frequent traveler who feels the same way, consider this handy blanket and pillow combo, complete with handy carrying strap.

5. White Noise Machine

We took our pediatrician's advice and did not stop doing chores while baby napped. Now the kid can sleep through anything. "White noise" is simply a combination of different sounds and frequencies. But no need to run the vacuum cleaner — just flip the switch on one of these white noise machines. Hot Water Bottle

To take the chill off, there is just something about a hot-water bottle. The product, patented in 1903, is the epitome of low-tech. It's also really nice to have one of these comforting bottles around when you don't feel well. Just add hot water and snooze.

7. A Little Lavender

Lavender may be just thing thing to help you rest, as it has been shown to reduce heart rate and blood pressure. Spray a little spritz and see if it is sleep-inducing. If nothing else, it smells wonderful.

8. Fan

A room fan offers the combination of cooling the room — which signals the body that it is time to sleep — plus a little white noise. I cannot sleep at night without my fan running. Any seasoned napper would love this extra snooze-boost.

9. Yoga Tunes

I'll admit that I have embarrassed myself by falling asleep in yoga class on, um, more than one occasion. Oh, well. Maybe the relaxing yoga music will help your favorite napper, too.

This article is from Marla Walters of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. You can relax and enjoy the decorating, the events, the lights, the parties — the whole season. But if you're not a planner, Christmas can be stressful. Instead of enjoying everything the season offers, you may end up in a panic about presents: what to buy for which person, and whether everything will arrive by Christmas Day.

While I can't tell you what to get for the gamer or gardener in your life or your favorite artist, I can help you out when it comes to buying presents for your favorite booklover. Here are some of my favorites for this year!

1. Writing Gloves

Fingerless gloves are kind of a thing right now, and these writing gloves by Storiarts help highlight a person's love of reading. Printed with text from your reader's favorite book, they are the perfect addition to a winter wardrobe. You can choose from several classic texts, or even choose the text that best typifies your relationship with your reader.

As a bonus, many readers are also writers of some form or another, and these gloves are great for keeping the hands warm while freeing the fingers to hold a pen or type.

2. Author Plushie

Does your booklover have a favorite classic author? Of course they do! Wouldn't they love to curl up with their favorite author while reading their favorite book? Bookish Freaks offers plushies of some of the most popular authors.

For the booklover who has everything, these make a fun and thoughtful gift. Show that you know your booklover well when you choose an author they love!

3. Building Stories

I almost never put actual stories on this list, but this one is an exception. Instead of a book, Building Stories is a story told through 14 different items in a box. These vary from pamphlets to scraps of paper, and tell the story of daily life in three adjoining apartments in Chicago.

There's nothing I've ever come across that is exactly like this, but it is the perfect gift for a reader. It's normal and exhilarating, beautiful and boring (but in all the right ways). It is a whole new way of storytelling, which most readers will appreciate, and it is also a work of art.

4. Bathtub Book Caddy

I'm not a huge bathtub fan, but one of my fellow book-loving friends is, and she adores her bathtub book caddy. If your booklover is also a bathlover, this can help them relax more than ever by making it possible for them to do two of their favorite things at once. Now, they won't have to worry about dropping their book in the tub, and they will be able to read while they soak.

Do be sure to buy a caddy with a spot for a wine glass. Because wine. Trust me. Your booklover will thank you.

5. The Storymatic Game

Pick some cards, tell a story. That's the basic premise of The Storymatic Game. This is a blast to play with friends, or to use as an icebreaker to start some fascinating conversations. Teachers can also use it in the classroom, and you can take it on car trips to help keep everyone off their phones. It's also great for writers who are stuck or who want to practice coming up with plotlines out of nowhere.

Most booklovers can appreciate a good story, and this helps them take it one step further to start telling stories of their own.

6. A Map of Fictional London

So many of the best stories take place in London, and now you can get your booklover's favorite literary locations collected together on this map of fictional London. How much fun would it be for your reader to plan a trip, real or imaginary, in which they got to see all of their favorite places? It's also helpful to understand the plot of some stories to actually see where the characters are going, how far they travel, etc.

7. Clic Reading Glasses

Even if your reader doesn't require reading glasses to see the words, a good pair can ease the strain on their eyes that comes from spending a lot of time with one's nose in a book. The clic glasses are especially nice, as they come with a built-in neck band, which helps keep them on and keeps them from getting lost, and they click together in the front, rather than going on like a regular pair of glasses.

Many of the booklovers I know wear reading glasses even though they don't require them, simply to extend the longevity of their ability to read regular-sized print by easing eyestrain.

8. "I'm Reading" Mug

As an avid reader, I can tell you that there's nothing (absolutely, positively nothing!) worse than being needlessly interrupted while in the middle of a good book. Give them the hint by overtly sipping from this mug. Not only does it let people know that their intrusion is not welcome (yes, I am actually doing something, thankyouverymuch), but it also does it nicely. Booklovers tend to be a fairly polite bunch, and this will help them make their point without feeling rude.

9. The Best Bookmark Ever

This bookmark doesn't just mark the page you left off at, but it has a handy pointer that shows you exactly where on the page you left off at! They also won't fall out easily thanks to the rubber band that goes around one whole side of the book. As a busy mom of three kids, sometimes it's impossible to find my place on a page before someone else needs my help. With this bookmark, I can read at least a couple of paragraphs before my presence is demanded.

10. "Well Read" Pin

For the booklover who is proud of their reading habit but also quiet and a bit understated, this "Well Read" pin can help them communicate about their passions. It's easy to wear on a backpack, a collar, or anywhere else. It won't get in the way, but I can guarantee that other readers will see it and smile, and they might even start up a conversation.

11. Solar Powered Kindle Charger

If your reader carries a Kindle with them wherever they go, consider a solar powered charger for their favorite device. Some of these even come with cases, so the Kindle can charge and be protected at the same time. Trust me… you don't want to be around a reader who can't read because their ereader died!

Be sure to choose the charger that goes with the Kindle your booklover owns. They are available for nearly every device.

This article is from Sarah Winfrey of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. On the list this year are my daughter's preschool teachers (three of them!) who have been tremendously helpful, nurturing, and caring.

Out of respect for allergies in the classroom (as well as New Year's diet resolutions), I'm planning to give nonfood gifts this year. As a former teacher myself, I accumulated a good amount of impractical tchotchkes, so I assembled this list of practical gifts that teachers will actually like and use.

1. Personalized Tote Bag

As a former teacher, I spent many days lugging assignments back and forth in reusable shopping bags. Why not help a teacher out by giving him/her a sturdy, personalized tote bag? You can make it yourself by printing an iron-on transfer and decorating a plain canvas tote bag from the craft store, monogram a bag with fabric paint, or you can purchase one ready-made on Etsy. Either way, it's sure to send a message that an educator's hard work is appreciated.

2. Water Bottle

Coffee mugs are so 2003. Hydration is where it's at these days! Help your teacher stay healthy by providing them with a sturdy reusable water bottle that can be sipped from all day. Bottles from Camelbak and Contigo are always well-received, but less expensive options can be found at big box stores if you're on a budget.

3. Lunchbox Accessories

Like your kids, teachers usually pack a lunch to eat at school. Make your teacher feel a little more pampered at lunch time by giving them a fancy insulated lunch bag, a Thermos, and/or a few ice packs and reusable containers (at the rate I lose them, you can never have too many). A cookbook full of lunch ideas is also a great idea.

4. Gift Cards

While not the most personal gift, gift cards are certainly practical and are more likely to be used than any other gift. Starbucks, iTunes, and Amazon gift cards are always useful and appreciated. Gift cards to local restaurants are also a great way to help a teacher relax. Many teachers spend their own money on school supplies for students, so a gift card to Target, Walmart, Staples, or a craft store can help them keep costs down. Pair it with a thoughtful note and your teacher will be a happy camper.

5. Organization Tools

When it comes to gifts, teachers may have tchotchkes a-plenty, but nary a place to store them. Give the gift of organization with a set of sturdy baskets, boxes, and drawer organizers. Alternatively, a gift card to The Container Store might do the trick.

6. Personalized Office Supplies and Stationery

Put a smile on a teacher's face every time they open their desk drawer by providing a set of personalized office supplies. A monogrammed notepad, a personalized stamp, fancy scissors and staplers, and cute paper clips can brighten a teacher's day while remaining super practical.

7. Travel Accessories

Gift-giving occasions for teachers often happen before the winter or summer holidays, and your teacher might be taking a much-needed vacation. Why not make traveling a little easier by gifting some travel accessories? An attractive travel pouch with small toiletry bottles, mesh suitcase organizers, or a tote with a beach towel and sunscreen, can all be used by a jet-setting teacher.

8. Quality Bath Products

I always feel a little ambiguous about giving bath products, because as a teacher, I received my fair share of cheap, dollar-store bubble baths and lotions. However, I was always happy to receive quality bath products from brands like Bath and Body Works, The Body Shop, or Philosophy. De-stressing in a hot bath with some aromatherapy bath salts really did wonders to lift my mood after a hard day.

9. Low-Maintenance Plants

The great thing about giving plants is that the teacher can leave them in the classroom to brighten up their work day, or take them home if they desire. And if they die, they can be thrown away and won't clutter up a junk drawer for years. Easy care plants such as succulents and air plants are good choices, or a pretty flower like an orchid or bromeliad that blooms for a long time.

10. Movie Night In

Give a teacher a relaxing night in by packing a basket with a cozy throw blanket, a gift card for an online movie rental (such as iTunes, Amazon, or Google Play), and a box of microwave popcorn. (Okay. Technically, this is a food gift, but popcorn makes every movie better!)

11. Classroom Supplies

If you're a teacher, you'll know that students are constantly asking to borrow pens, and somehow those pens rarely find themselves back onto your desk. Keep your child's teacher's costs down by giving him/her a jar full of pens that can be kept on their desk. Other useful items that teachers often buy themselves include highlighters, bandages, stickers, sticky notes, and sanitizing wipes.

12. Books for the Classroom

Most teachers get plenty of trinkets from students every year, but classroom supplies remain neglected. Age-appropriate books are great for kindergarten and lower-grade classrooms which may reuse the same small selection of books all year. You may want to ask the teacher what books are needed, or simply give them a gift card to a bookstore so they can make the best choice.

13. Activity Books

Adult coloring books are all the rage these days, and for good reason. They are incredibly relaxing. A coloring book with a set of nice colored pencils could be a thoughtful gift for a teacher, especially for someone who likes crafting. A sudoku or crossword puzzle book could be similarly fun to do when the teacher gets a little spare time.

14. Hobby Supplies

Have your child ask the teacher what hobbies they enjoy, and give them hobby supplies. Some ideas include: scrapbooking supplies, gardening supplies, baking tools and mixes, or a gift certificate to a hobby store.

15. Handmade Gifts

Nothing is as memorable or personal as a gift that was lovingly handmade by your child. Whether that's a personalized T-shirt or baseball cap, a classroom scrapbook, a planter, ornament, or picture frame, it's sure to send the message that you and your child appreciate the teacher's hard work and dedication to their job.

This article is from Camilla Cheung of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. When I think about holiday gift giving, I get sort of frantic thinking about the new stuff that might come in. And when I'm planning gifts for others, I don't want to spread around that kind of burden. Consider giving experiences to your friends and family this year instead of tangible items. Here are some ideas to get you started. (Related: 12 Fun Ways to Give Experiences Instead of Stuff)

1. Ice Skating

Bundle up and take the whole family ice skating. There's likely a rink right in your neighborhood with modest skate rental prices. Don't forget the camera either, as you won't want to miss your brother slipping and sliding around out there.

2. Art Classes

For those of you more into drawing, painting, photography, and other arts, check around your city for classes. Some meet just once for a few hours while others, through community colleges, for example, meet weekly.

3. Children's Museum Pass

Give those kids in your life a pass to the local children's museum or science center. Many passes are accepted at other area museums, zoos, etc. You'll make parents happy, too! While you're at it, consider gifting passes to other attractions in your area.

4. Concert Tickets

Is your friend just dying to see her favorite band? Find out if they're on tour in a city near you, and treat her to the night of her life. Rocking out for a whole night? This is one gift she won't soon forget. You can have just as much fun at the symphony.

5. Game Tickets

Round up the guys and surprise them with tickets to the big game. If the cost climbs too high, you could also throw an awesome party at your place and watch it together. Body paint is optional, but highly recommended.

6. Wine or Beer Tasting

For your beverage-loving friends, a wine or beer tasting afternoon is where it's at. You can stick with one of your favorites, or make it a tour of your area's finest. Be extra generous to everyone and appoint yourself the designated driver or arrange for other transportation.

7. Mini Trip

You don't need to be gone for a whole week to have an awesome vacation. Pick a destination that's only a couple hours from your hometown and plan out an amazing long weekend. Try ski lodges, family themed hotels (Great Wolf Lodge, for example), or anywhere else that seems worth the trek.

8. Movie Tickets

Pile your family in the car and drive to your local movie theater to catch a new flick. Matinees are typically cheaper, especially for larger groups. And if you're short on cash, try dollar theaters or other discounted shows that feature slightly older movies on the big screen.

9. Park Passes

Is there an outdoorsy person in your family? Give the gift of total access to state or national parks. That way, your special person can hike, fish, camp, or do all other sorts of cool nature things.

10. Restaurant Certificates

Wow your foodie friends with restaurants gift certificates. You can give them a night out at their favorite eatery or a unique experience someplace new. Check out sites like Restaurant.com for great deals in your area.

11. Dance Lessons

Whether it's a year of ballet for your four-year-old daughter or a couple's ballroom class, dance lessons are a fun gift to give. Bonus: You'll be giving your fitness goal-making friends an excuse to get moving and grooving in the new year.

12. Cooking Classes

Community centers, grocery stores, restaurants, farms, and cooking shops often offer cooking classes to the public. Comb their websites for a calendar of events or simply call and ask. I took a mozzarella cheese making class at a dairy farm once, and it's a skill I'm glad to have in my back pocket.

13. Tours

Take your mom on that Historic Homes tour she's been talking about all these years. Or round up your siblings and take a ghost tour. If you're more into city tours, check sites like ToursByLocals to find area guides near you.

14. Something Crazy

Ask your dad what's on his bucket list. If the answer is something like skydiving, you have yet another great experience gift idea. The sky's the limit here, but it's the crazy things that people never tend to do on their own.

15. Music Lessons

Last year, I signed my husband up for an online course in guitar. He has now mastered bar chords and many of his favorite songs. Best of all? He plays his guitar every single day. Contact the music department at your town's high school or college to get information on local instructors.

16. Train Ride

Take your family on a train ride or a ferry cruise. Or maybe even a hot air balloon excursion. The fun is in the moments you spend together taking in the scenery. Of course, you can combine your travel with many of the other gift ideas on this list.

17. Spa Day

Let your mom relax with a long day at the spa. You can choose to join her or let her breathe in peace. Also, this is a great experience to gift yourself when all you want for Christmas is alone time.

18. Gym Membership

While we're on the topic of wellness, gift a gym membership to your favorite athlete (or wannabe). Definitely check with your recipient to find out about preferences for the gym's location and features. Otherwise, search around for promotional deals that can cut out a good chunk of registration fees and monthly charges.

19. Fitness Classes

Is a la carte fitness more your loved one's style? Give your aunt the gift of yoga or Pilates with a class pass. Maybe your brother wants to try a session at that new CrossFit gym. There are fitness classes for everyone on your list. Who knows? Maybe they'll want to sign up for more.

20. Babysitting

Let your sister and brother-in-law have a night on the town while you watch their kids. Offer your services for a few hours up to a night or two, depending on your comfort level. I guarantee (as someone who would love to receive this gift!) they'll be thanking you for years to come.

21. Giving Back

Volunteering is another wonderful way to celebrate the holidays. Gather your friends and family together and donate your time at a soup kitchen. Assemble bags of canned goods for a local food bank. Visit a nursing home and plan an activity for the bunch. Or read books to kids at your local library. Here are more holiday volunteer opportunities on VolunteerMatch.org.

What other experiences make great gifts? Items for the Party

You can make things easier on the host(ess) by gifting them items for the party. Make their job easier by bringing food, decorations, or conversation pieces like the following:

Conversation starter card game

DIY polka dot napkins or holiday coasters

Fun tea towels

Luxury soap samplers

Indoor snowman

Unique holiday wreath

Serving platter or cake server

Chalkboard coasters

Customized CD or music playlist

2. Edible or Culinary Gifts

There is no better time of year than the holidays to give edible gifts. Consider the following ideas that the host(ess) can share with the party or enjoy after everyone leaves:

Make a warm dip in a dish that the host(ess) can keep. You'll take some of the pressure off of them by adding food to the party. Also include a new pot holder, or kitchen accessory that they can keep after the guests have gone home.

Put together a dinner basket with either a homemade meal, or the ingredients for them to make your favorite recipe. Put the items in a new pot with the tools required to complete the dish. On a stressful night, they'll be grateful for the quick meal.

If you don't want to bring a dish to the party, consider bringing a complement to the dish, like a flavored butter, sugar, or preserves. You can make these items yourself or purchase them from your favorite specialty store.

The host(ess) can use grilling essentials, like a BBQ apron, both during the party and after.

A cute chemist's spice rack is both practical and a great conversation piece with guests.

A unique measuring cup set for the Star Wars fans.

Homemade peppermint bark, fudge, cookies, or eggnog marshmallows.

3. Drink Essentials

Most holiday parties include wine or spirits of some sort. Instead of just bringing a nice bottle of wine, consider the following unique drink-related gift ideas instead:

Wine glass pens, wine glass tags, or wine charms for glasses

Cheese knife set

Cooling wine glasses

Homemade mulled wine

Corkscrew and accessory set

Wine box chest

Elegant wine bottle holder

Unique wine glasses or shot glasses

Flavored liqueur sampler

Instant wine chiller

Wine aerator and decanter

Electric wine bottle opener

Cocktail kit

4. Gift Cards

Gift cards can be the easiest route when you're truly stumped by a man who's tough to shop for. Best of all, it will allow him to choose exactly what he wants, so he's sure to be happy.

Don't forget you can also give an experience! For example, consider a gift card for Dave & Buster's, Ripley's Believe It or Not, a show or live experience nearby, or to his favorite massage parlor. You can also make the card extra special by finding a unique way to display it, such as in a DIY mason jar snow globe, hidden in a small stocking, or wrapped in a large box with tons of tissue paper (he'll be guessing what it is all day).

10. Get Creative

DIY gifts are a great way to save money, show off your creativity, and give something truly unique. Think about it. Giving an experience means that your recipient won't have something else to clutter their home, and it means that they get to do something that is fun and meaningful for them. (See also: The Ultimate Gift Guide)

If giving experiences appeals to you this holiday season, here are just a few ideas to jumpstart your thoughts.

For the Kids

Kids usually have a long list of things they want, but that doesn't mean you can't treat them to fun (and educational?) experiences, instead.

1. Annual Passes

Give an annual pass to something they'll enjoy returning to, like the zoo, the aquarium, or a really nifty science museum. This is an especially frugal idea if you plan to visit these places multiple times in a year anyway, as these passes usually pay for themselves in 2-4 visits. My kids love to feed the giraffes at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo over and over again, or watch how Heran the tiger progresses in his training at the Denver Aquarium. (See also: How to Visit Museums for Free)

2. Field Trips

If your kids are in school, give a day off "field trip" somewhere exciting. Take them to an amusement park or an age-appropriate theater show, and throw in a meal at a fun restaurant.

Give each of your children a day in your life. So many kids crave their parents' time and attention, so knowing that you set aside the stuff that they usually see you doing in order to be with them means a lot. Even if you can't afford to go anywhere exciting, your kids will enjoy spending the day with you one-on-one. (See also: 15 Free Ways to Entertain Kids)

For Your Spouse

A great thing about giving your spouse an experience is that it can be one you experience together.

3. Time Off

Give them some time off. You can give them a weekend without work, where you will take on all the tasks that would have been theirs so that they can rest, relax, and catch up on things that are important to them. If you want to, throw in gift certificates to some of their favorite places so they can pamper themselves that weekend, too. (See also: Frugal Ways to Improve Your Spouse’s Day)

4. DIY Classes

Pay for the two of you to take classes in something you think you'd enjoy but have never done. Try cooking or art classes in your neighborhood.

5. Mini Vacation

Plan a small vacation. Maybe you can reserve your favorite camping spot, or get a room in a quaint bed and breakfast near an area you've always wanted to explore. This doesn't have to be anything extravagant — the important thing is that the two of you get away together. (See also: 14 Affordable Weekend Getaways)

For Everybody Else

From the foodies you know to adventurous travelers, you can give all sorts of interesting, thoughtful experiences.

6. Babysitting

Offer to babysit for a night, or two, or even a whole weekend for a parent you know. This is a gift that is virtually free for you to give, but that is also very meaningful for the parents who receive it. Not only does this mean that they get some free time, but it means that they won't have to worry about their kids because they know their munchkins will be with someone they trust. And if you wonder whether this is really giving an experience, think about it from the parent's perspective. Time off plus no kids equals a chance to do something they love without having to worry.

7. A Special Meal

Learn to cook a unique meal that your foodie friend will love. If your friend likes a particular kind of cuisine, you can watch videos on YouTube that can teach you how to make dishes your friend will love. Not only is this an experience you can share with the recipient, but the people who get to taste test your practice sessions probably won't mind, either. (See also: 10+ Tasty Cuban Recipes)

8. Cooking School, Part 2

If your foodie friend would prefer to learn some new cooking skills themselves, take them to one of the classes mentioned above, or offer a gift certificate.

9. Personal Travel Experiences

If you know someone on your list who is planning a trip, see if you can't buy a special experience for them while they're there. Vayable is a website that specializes in offering unique experiences to travelers by connecting them with locals who offer tours or lessons that might be hard to find otherwise. You can also contact the local travel bureau in your recipient's destination and see what they suggest. (See also: Why You Should Travel Off the Beaten Path)

10. Some Holiday Cheer

Spend some time with the recipient now that the holidays are in full swing, just experiencing the season together. Bake cookies, make hot chocolate, build a gingerbread house, and string garlands. Purchase all of the supplies and invite a group of people whose presence will be meaningful to the recipient, and you have a great gift for someone who just adores the holiday season.

11. A Bucket List Item

Buy the recipient a gift certificate to do something they've always wanted to do. Whether it's base jumping, paragliding, or waterskiing, you can help the person knock something off their bucket list. If the price tag is too much for you to carry alone, organize a group of people who can give the recipient the adventure of a lifetime. If all of your friends are web savvy, Share A Gift can be a great way to make this happen online.

12. An Experience Certificate

If you just can't decide how they should spend their time, let them choose their own experience. You can buy a gift certificate to a website like Cloud 9 Living, where your recipient can choose their own adventure. I know my husband would love to be a fighter pilot for a day, and I'd drag him along on my hot air balloon ride. Giving a gift like this not only means that you don't end up buying them something that isn't meaningful, but it also takes the hassle out of things on your end. Gifts that fill a need. Gifts that might be indulgent, but not wholly unnecessary. And we especially love gifts that can do even more — that can help people save money. With that in mind, here's our guide to 25 great gifts that keep more cash in your giftee's wallet. (See also: 31 Great Gifts That Keep on Giving)

1. Coffee Maker

The "latte factor" — the idea that small regular expenses can make a big difference over time — is one of the most frequently-discussed ideas in personal finance, so it makes sense to start here. I love my little Bodum French press (it makes exactly the amount of coffee I want in the morning), but there are so many other options — bigger French presses, Keurig one-cup coffee makers, classic drip coffee makers, Chemex coffee makers — heck, even espresso machines can save you money over time, depending on how many espresso-based drinks you normally buy at the coffee shop. (See also: The 5 Best Coffeemakers)

2. A Netflix, Hulu+, or AmazonPrime Subscription

These three services all offer streaming movies and TV shows — or, in the case of Netflix, the option of movies on DVD as well. Depending on the media habits of the person you're giving the gift to, these services can save anywhere from a few dollars a month to over $100 a month, if they decide to cut cable and go out to the movies less. Netflix and Hulu+ plans start at $7.99 a month, and Amazon Prime is $79 a year (and includes other perks like free two-day shipping for Amazon orders).

If you do know someone who is getting rid of cable, another great idea is a Roku box — this little device makes it easy to stream all of the services listed above onto a TV. I have one, and I love it.

3. Knitting or Crocheting Supplies

I love hobbies that help you make something — you can save money by making items for yourself or items for others, or even sell the items you make in a side business. This highly-rated how to knit kit includes everything needed to get started with the hobby, and here's a similar kit for crocheting. If you think your giftee will benefit more from a hands-on approach, consider a gift certificate for supplies and classes at a local shop.

4. Specialty Cooking Supplies

We all know that cooking at home saves money, but sometimes you want a certain cuisine that you feel like you "can't" cook. Help bridge the gap by getting specialized equipment, such as a wok (I love my Calaphon wok — it's a pricier investment, but great quality), sushi-making kit, or pasta maker.

5. Specialty Cooking Ingredients

Similar to specialty cooking supplies, some special ingredients can be all a home cook needs to change a normal meal into that sort of special dinner that easily replaces a night on the town. Some of my favorite items include finishing salts, truffle oil, and saffron. Or if you want to support your community, look for locally produced items like honey and jams. Locally-produced honey with a piece of honeycomb in it is one of my favorite gifts.

6. Classes

You'll see a theme on this list — one of the best ways to save money is to learn skills so you can do things for yourself. Whether it's cooking, car care, woodworking, or something else, gift certificates for classes are a great way give the gift of money-saving skills (along with an opportunity for fun and meeting new people).

7. Herb Plants

If you're looking for a gift that keeps on giving, how about one that literally keeps growing? Fresh herbs can be expensive at the grocerystore, but they're oh-so-cheap when you grow them at home. Plus, they help perk up your stoop or kitchen sill. Buy fresh herbs at your local florist or garden center, or buy a seedling starter kit.

8. Fitness Supplies

Fitness supplies — whether a bike, soccer ball, or free weights for a home gym — can save money in multiple ways. First of all, they can help save on gym fees. Secondly, improving physical health has all sorts of money-saving benefits, like making you less likely to need medical care. And if you give someone a bike, depending on where they live, they can also save money by biking to work.

9. Tools

Having basic tools around means having the ability to fix things instead of calling in expensive service-people. Of course, there are certain things — like electrical work — that should never be attempted by non-professionals (you might want to include that note in the card if you have any accident-prone friends). Know someone who's starting from scratch? Give them a basic kit, or put one together by shopping at estate sales, which can be great places to find quality old tools.

10. A Car Wash and Oil Change

Proactive car care helps extend the life of a car, which means that gift certificates for a car wash and oil change can help save money on repairs down the road.

11. Reusable Bags

Yes, they're good for the environment. But many grocery stores will also knock a few cents off your order if you bring your own bags. Check out these cute reusable bags that fold up super-small. Or take the reusable bag thing even further with these resuable sandwich and snack bags.

12. Rechargeable Batteries

For all the gadgets that come with their own rechargeable batteries these days, there are many that still don't (I'm looking at you, Wii remote). If you know someone who burns through batteries, a rechargable battery set can save some serious scratch. They even make rechargeable batteries that can be powered by a USB port.

13. Beverage Carbonator

Got a friend who drinks sparkling water or even soda obsessively? A SodaStream could be the perfect way to give in to their craving and help 'em save.

14. Computer Backup Service

It's far from the sexiest of gifts, but getting a subscription to a service like Mozy or SOS now means not having to pay for expensive file-retrieval later, should the worst happen to a hard drive.

15. A Sewing Machine

Like with the knitting supplies, a sewing machine can save money in so many ways, allowing the giftee to make clothes and items for the home, gifts, and things to sell.

16. Woodworking Supplies

Woodworking supplies are another great hobby tool that, like a sewing machine and knitting supplies, can help save money in a variety of ways.

17. Wine

Giving wine can save money? Yup, if your giftee drinks it instead of going out, that's definitely a money saver (and hey, maybe he'll even invite you to a wine-and-cheese gathering).

18. Programmable Thermostat

Giving the user the ability to automatically lower and raise the heat depending on the time of day, programmable thermostats are a great way to reduce heating costs in the winter.

19. Long Underwear

This gift was a favorite of mine when I still lived in colder climates. Wearing long underwear allows the giftee to keep the heat a little bit lower when at home, and it makes going outside in winter so much more pleasant.

20. Coupons for Services You Can Offer

Coupons for services you can offer are one my favorite things to give. You save yourself money, because you're generally giving your time, not stuff. And you save the giftee money, not having to pay someone else for something like babysitting, yard work, or cooking.

21. Books That Teach Skills — Especially Personal Finance Skills

Remember where I said that there's a theme here, and that theme is learning skills? Any book that can teach a skill is a great holiday gift. But the ones that might have the biggest money-saving impact are books that can teach financial skills, like"I WIll Teach You to Be Rich," "The Total Money Makeover," or our book, "10,001 Ways to Live Large on a Small Budget."

22. CFL Light Bulbs

Like computer backup service, this isn't the sexiest of gifts. But according to Energy Star, a single compact fluorescent bulb can also save "about $6 a year in electricity costs and can save more than $40 over its lifetime." Too boring? Give an awesome lamp too.

23. A Travel-Friendly Reusable Coffee Mug

If you know someone who makes coffee at home, a resuable mug will help them carry their caffeine in style. And for those who refuse to stop buying their brew at coffee shops, most coffee shops will at least take a few cents off if you bring your own mug.

24. Personal Pampering Items

Know someone who loves spa treatments? Get them the goods to replicate their favorite pampering at home, such as a pedicure kit, bath salts (no, not the scary kind), or a general awesome pampering kit.

25. Lawn Games or Other Outdoor Fun Items

Not only are games like croquet and badminton fun ways to spend time outside in the summer (that can save some serious money if the other plan was to pay for the entire family to go play mini golf), but just before the holidays, you might be able to find some of these out-of-season items on serious clearance.

What are your favorite money-saving gifts?
