For those of you who are into fashion and makeup, it may be worth your while to check out Wantable.

About Wantable

Wantable knows that each person has unique tastes and preferences, so they use a style quiz to make sure they send products their customers will love. You start by choosing a product category: makeup, accessories, intimates, or fitness. Then, answer about 30 questions about the kinds of products that you like or dislike — and it really is just indicating whether you love, like, or dislike the options they present to you. And for $36 a month or $40 for a one-time box (pricing for fitness boxes works a little differently), Wantable will send you a box of goodies handpicked by their stylists.

The Goodies

I have tried a few makeup boxes, but I found that I don’t use makeup often enough to really enjoy the value. Accessories, though? Bring them on! Here’s what I reported as my loves, likes, and dislikes when I took the style quiz for the accessories box:

Love: Mx ‘n Match, Classic, Hair Accessories, Necklaces, Earrings

Like: Boho, Rock ‘n Roll, Scarves, Bracelets, Multi Tone, Gold Tone, Silver Tone

Dislike: Glam, Sunglasses, Watches, Rings

Here’s what I found in my box.

Olivia Necklace

There are a few Wantable pieces that I love on sight, and the Olivia Necklace is one of them. I love mixed materials in my jewelry — adds interest, you know? And the ombre effect of maroon, red, and pink is gorgeous. I’ve worn this necklace a handful of times already, for both casual and dressy occasions, and it made every outfit pop!

Retail value: $32

Shannon Hair Tie in Gold

I like the idea of the Shannon Hair Tie (I was thiiis close to buying a similar chain hair tie at a craft fair booth once) but unfortunately, it isn’t as practical as I’d hoped. The elastic slips through the links if I try to loop it around my hair three times; if I keep it at two, the hair tie falls out of my stubby ponytail in seconds. It will probably work fine for someone with hair that’s of a different texture or volume from mine. My hair, not so much.

It makes a very cute bracelet, though.

Retail value: $8

Amy Earrings in Silver

The Amy Earrings are long, silver spikes. Simple, yes! But don’t underestimate the punch of these studs. There’s an edgy, dramatic feel to these earrings, which I like. They’re also supremely versatile, which I like even more. As a neutral metal, in a very basic shape, this set of earrings will look great with anything in my closet.

Retail value: $15

Ashley Scarf

I have worn the Ashley scarf nearly every day since I got it. There is pretty much every color in the feather print — which means clashing colors is not an issue. It is soft, it is warm (but not too warm!), and since it’s an infinity scarf, there aren’t any ends to get in my way when I need to roll up my sleeves and get things done.

Retail value: $18

Is It Worth It?

The retail value of the accessories in this box totaled $73, which means a savings of $33…so a 47% discount on everything in the box. Although the chain hair tie didn’t work out for me, I know that I’ll get a ton of use out of the other pieces. So, yes, this box is definitely worth it! Sign up for Wantable today!

Disclaimer: I received a free box for an honest review.

This article is from Amy Lu of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. The twist is that you don't get to choose the pieces — they make the selection for you based on your answers to a style quiz.

About Wantable

Since 2012, Wantable has been matching their customers with products chosen specifically for them. When you enter their site, you choose a category (makeup, accessories, intimates, or fitness — this ones new!) and answer about 30 questions about your style and preferences. Don't worry, the quiz uses a sliding scale so it's super easy! Just pick between Like, Love, or Dislike, and Wantable's crew will send a personalized box of goodies picked just for you. One-time boxes cost $40, or you can subscribe for $36 a month. (Pricing is a little different for the fitness box.)

The Goodies

Wantable's accessory boxes have been good to me, for the most part — lots of great statement pieces that I can dress up or down, some simpler fare that I can wear when I need just a touch of something extra, and a few truly stunning necklaces and earrings that I've received compliments on from strangers. How did they do this time? Here's a sampling of my loves, likes, and dislikes:

Love: Classic, Mix 'n Match, Earrings, Necklaces, Hair Accessories

Like: Rock 'n Roll, Boho, Bracelets, Scarves, Silver Tone, Gold Tone, Multi Tone

Dislike: Glam, Rings, Watches, Sunglasses

And they picked out these items for me:

Jessica Necklace

The Jessica necklace is held together by loops of silver and gunmetal gray chains, with ring components of the same tones. The looped chains around the rings can cause the necklace to tangle in on itself, and the draping chains may twist awkwardly, but a few gentle shakes will ease everything into place.

You have to really like this necklace to wear it often — it takes some adjusting to get the chains to fall as they should. Luckily, I do like this necklace, and I rather enjoy unknotting and untangling things (I find it soothing!). While I'm not quite in love with this necklace yet, I'm happy to make a place for it in my wardrobe.

Retail value: $14

Bree Necklace

I'm more excited about this necklace called Bree. It's simple enough to go with most anything, but the chunky links give it a fun pop. Close up, the gold finishing looks cloudy and scratched up — the accessory version of the distressed look, I guess? I'm not a fan of deliberately distressed clothing, but I like the texture it creates in this necklace.

Retail value: $21

Regan Headband

The Regan headband is embellished with pearls, sequins, and beads — it sounds like a lot, but the overall effect is nicely understated. It is absolutely something I would buy for myself! Better yet, this headband actually stays on my head, even when I try to dislodge it by swinging my head round and round (don't try this at home). I think it has something to do with the cloth backing; that grip is solid. The headband also fits comfortably, which is rare for my unusually large head. I'm counting this one as a win!

Retail value: $18

Corrinne Earrings

I like these a lot. The Corrinne earrings from designer Emily Maynard feature resin and acrylic beads, and that blue! That blue is beautiful. I already have earrings this color (from Wantable, even!), but not quite in this shape — so yes, I will be wearing these too. My only complaint is that they feel a little heavy, but goshdarnit, I'll get used to it!

Retail value: $45

Is It Worth It?

The total retail value of the four pieces in this box came out to $98. At $40 per box, this translates to $58 (59%) savings. While I'm not entirely sold on the Jessica necklace, I love the Corrinne earrings and I know I'll get a lot of mileage out of the Bree necklace. The Regan headband I'll keep around for the days when I actually feel like playing around with my hair. All in all, for me, this box was worth it! Sign up for your very own Wantable box today!

Disclaimer: I received a free box for an honest review.

This article is from Amy Lu of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. The contents of the box will be a surprise, but the stylists at Wantable will use a quiz to make sure you love the products you get.

The Goodies

The style quiz is fairly detailed and extremely easy to use. You're presented with a number of style options, and all you need to do is move a slider up to "Love" if you love it, "Dislike" if you don't, or just leave it at "Like" if you don't feel too strongly either way. Here's a quick summary of my selections for the accessories box:

Love: Classic, Mix 'n Match, Earrings, Necklaces, Hair Accessories

Like: Rock 'n Roll, Boho, Bracelets, Scarves, Gold Tone, Multi Tone

Dislike: Glam, Rings, Watches, Sunglasses

Let's take a look at what I got!

Addy Headband

I've always liked the idea of headbands. They're pretty much the only kind of hair accessory that has a fighting chance of staying in my hair, especially since I started wearing my hair short a few years ago. But even then, trying to find a one that works with my abnormally large head has been an exercise in frustration and discarded dreams (for a neat and low maintenance 'do). If a headband is tight enough to not slip at the slightest turn of my head, the pressure is likely to cause enough discomfort that I tear it off before the day is out.

The wired headband changed everything.

I've seen them around but was always too skeptical to carry through with a purchase. Well, joke's on me! They're actually quite wonderful. The one that Wantable sent me is in basic black-and-white stripes — super easy to match with anything in my closet. But beyond the aesthetics, I love the functionality. The wire molded to my head comfortably, despite its weird shape and size, and once I secured the headband with a twist (you can also knot or loop!), it stayed put no matter how much I flipped, swung, or bounced my head.

Plus, it's a really cute look!

Retail value: $11

Sandy Bracelet

You know what I have realized since doing these Wantable reviews? I am a sucker for gold tone and pastels, together. I've been getting a lot of this combination lately, and I LOVE it. I use these pieces to dress up a casual outfit or dress down a fancier ensemble, thereby making my wardrobe even more versatile than it was!

Speaking of versatile, check out the Sandy bracelet above. It's a simple gold chain intertwined with sections of pink, white, and green cord. You can wrap it around your wrist to wear as a bracelet, or unwind and drape it around your neck — on its own or as a layered piece. I'm certain this will become another one of my go-to accessories. My only complaint is that the ends of the colored cords jut out slightly, giving the otherwise beautiful bracelet an unfinished look upon close inspection — plus, it irritates my skin when it lands just so. Still, I count this piece as a win.

Retail value: $26

Aubrey Necklace

Besides gold-and-pastel jewelry, Wantable also likes sending me chunky statement necklaces made with many different materials. This time, they are beads, cords, and stones in shades of blue, plus another component that I haven't seen much of in my Wantable goods: gunmetal chain!

Here's another piece that can be dressed up or down, which I like. I also like the details: interwoven cord and chain, stone insets at unexpected angles, the twin clusters of rhinestones attached to the blue gems — like sparkling pom-poms. However, I did notice that one of the long blue beads was chipped at the center —not a deal-breaker, just unfortunate for a piece this pretty.

Retail value: $42

Is It Worth It?

I would be very hesitant to spend $79 on these three pieces. I might wish that I could, but with my budget? Ha! No. But if I could get them all at just a smidge over half-price? Yes. Oh yes.

The Sandy bracelet-necklace and the Aubrey necklace-necklace are gorgeous pieces (very minor flaws notwithstanding), but it is the Addy headband that underscores (for me, at least) the value of a service like Wantable. Sure, you can shop for accessories yourself and buy only the items you like, but with Wantable, you get to try products that are just outside your comfort zone — without being too out there. You can take the time to try something different, right in your home. If you regularly spend $40 on accessories anyway, a Wantable box may be just the thing to help you save money and experiment with your style.

Disclaimer: I received a free box for an honest review.

This article is from Amy Lu of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. There are ways to get around the sticker price on the latest in fashion and beauty, if you know where to look. Here's a look at Wantable.

About Wantable

Wantable is a company that aims to match you up with accessories, makeup, or intimates you're sure to love. For $40 a box, or $36 for a monthly subscription, their in-house and guest stylists will select a number of designer and boutique products based on your answers to their easy-peasy style quiz. If you don't like what you get, simply return the whole box for a full refund.

The Goodies

Despite a couple misses, the Wantable accessories boxes have been good to me so far. And it seems like the Wantable team really cares about sending you the right kind of products — they are constantly refining the style quiz to make it more comprehensive while keeping it easy to use. Since my first box, they've added questions about hair length and bracelet size, and modified existing questions to get a better sense of what you love, like, and dislike. Speaking of which, here are mine:

Love: Classic, Mix 'n Match, Earrings, Necklaces, Hair Accessories

Like: Rock 'n Roll, Boho, Bracelets, Gold Tone, Silver Tone

Dislike: Rings, Watches, Sunglasses, Glam

How did the stylists do this time?

Titian Earrings

Do these earrings come in other colors? I ask because I want them all. This combination of yellow, olive, tan, and dark gray stones set in gold makes for a neutral accessory piece that works well with most wardrobe colors, but what I really love is the asymmetrical cut of the stones. It adds some fun to a fairly ordinary diamond layout — and who doesn't like fun? This is the kind of detail that wins me over on so many of Wantable's offerings.

Retail value: $20

Alexia Bracelet

Here's another neutral piece in black, dark red, and nude. The enamel and gold outline adds a nice shine to this geometric bracelet, which I appreciate. I also appreciate the elastic bands running through the bracelet that make it super easy to slip on and off. This is not your flimsy kids' jewelry kit elastic, either — it's sturdy stuff! I can absolutely see this bracelet becoming one of my go-to pieces.

Retail value: $17

Lilith Necklace

I wasn't entirely sold on this necklace when I first took it out of the velvet Wantable pouch. There is a lot going on for a necklace, what with the faceted stones, pastel beads, and row of gold-tone flowers. The chain is quite a bit chunkier than what I usually wear. But then I tried it on, and suddenly, somehow, everything works. I guess I shouldn't always get too caught up in the details; this time, I had to step back to appreciate the full effect of the statement necklace.

Retail value: $34

Is It Worth It?

The retail value of this box came out to $71 — that's $31 savings by purchasing the accessories through Wantable. I might not have picked these pieces on my own (and especially not at those retail prices), but they definitely suit my style... once I gave them a chance (lookin' at you, Lilith!). That's part of the appeal of a service like Wantable, though. They send you products that will work with your style and lifestyle, but you can still count on the goodies to be different enough to surprise. They take you outside your comfort zone, right inside your home!

Now, is the element of surprise (and a number of really cool products) worth $40 a box or a $36 monthly subscription? It depends on how much you usually spend on similar accessories, makeup, or intimates. Of course, $40 for 3-4 accessory items can seem like an extravagance to some, but if you regularly spend $20 apiece on jewelry, a Wantable box may be just your thing.

Disclaimer: I received a free box for an honest review.

This article is from Amy Lu of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. I also like getting good deals on pretty things, which can end in disappointment if said pretty thing doesn't hold up as well as I expected. I like pretty and cheap, but not, you know, cheap. After receiving a number of Wantable accessory boxes in the past few months, I can assure you that the pieces are definitely not cheap in quality.

About Wantable

Wantable is a Milwaukee-based company that aims to match you with hand-picked products you'll probably love. Start by choosing one of three categories — accessories, makeup, or intimates — and take the easy-peasy style quiz. Seriously, all you need to do is move a slider to "Love", "Like", or "Dislike" to show how you feel about a style item that they give you. However, do set aside 5-10 minutes to complete this if you're indecisive like I am, as there can be a lot of items to go through. Then, for the cost of $40 for a one-time box or $36 a month if you subscribe, Wantable will send you a number of premium, boutique, and full-size products that their stylists have picked out just for you. You'll most likely get the things you "Love" and probably some things you "Like", but never what you "Dislike".

The Goodies

I've gotten a few misses in the past, but my overall experience with the accessories boxes has been quite positive. So you can get a sense of how well (or not!) the products matched my style, here are some of the answers I gave during the quiz.

Love: Classic, Mix ‘n Match, Earrings, Necklaces, Headbands

Like: Rock ‘n Roll, Boho, Bracelets, Scarves, Gold Tone, Multi Tone

Dislike: Rings, Watches, Sunglasses, Wood, Skulls, Leatherette

And these are the accessories the stylists chose for me:

Haven Scarf

I think if I saw this scarf at a store, I would stroke it longingly and walk away because, in my heart of hearts, I know I can't justify spending $26 on what is basically a long rectangle of fabric.

But because I didn't buy it at a store, and it's already mine upon arrival, you bet I'll wear it to shreds! You can't tell from the photo, but there are gold and silver threads woven in, adding some fun sparkle to the muted colors. The smoky blue, ivory, and dark rose are great neutrals that match well with most everything in my closet. And despite its loose, open weave and delicate appearance, this scarf has held up extremely well against sharp zippers and accidental snags.

Retail value: $26

Aggi Earrings

Remember when I said I liked pretty things? The Aggi earrings are so pretty. Wearing them makes me feel like my ears have wings—black and light-blue gemstone wings. The pale pink softens and completes this classy, unique piece. Love it!

Retail value: $15

Zoey Necklace

I wore this necklace to my birthday dinner and got compliments from friends and strangers alike! The Zoey necklace packs a lot of punch; there might be too much going on if you wear a busy, patterned top. Wantable suggests a cream sweater, but I've found that this necklace looks great against a bright orange lace dress, too.

Retail value: $36

Phoebe Necklace

I'm usually less excited about minimalist jewelry. I thought the infinity-sign Imagine earrings from a previous box were too basic to be worth its portion of the $40 cost of the box. Well, it turned out that I got so much wear out those earrings that they now have a permanent place on my desk, where I can reach for them at a moment's notice.

So, sure, the Phoebe necklace is a simple gold square on a chain, but I see its potential. I can layer it with other necklaces; I can also wear it on its own when I'm in a hurry or I want to dial back on the accessories. It's basic and it's easy, and sometimes that all you really need.

Retail value: $15

Is It Worth It?

Wantable really delivered the value in this accessories box. Everything suits my style and they're quality pieces to boot. The retail value of everything in this box came out to $92, so that's $52 in savings through Wantable. I can't imagine buying the Haven scarf or the Phoebe necklace at full price, but I would purchase the Aggie earrings and Zoey necklace in a heartbeat. (I do have a wedding to go to in a few months; I think they'll work quite nicely!)

While $36 a month can be a hefty expense for accessories if you're not much of a fashion person, a one-time box at $40 may be a great treat for yourself or a friend once in a while.

Disclaimer: I received a free box for an honest review.

This article is from Amy Lu of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Granted, drugstore brands work well enough for most of us, but if you're a cosmetics maven, a single tube of name-brand mascara can seriously cramp your budget. (See also: Makeup Advice for the Frugal)

That's where Wantable comes in.

About Wantable

For $40 per box (or $36 a month if you subscribe for monthly boxes), you get a number of full sized, premium products. You can choose from three categories — makeup, accessories, and intimates — and that's all you know about your box. Even so, with help of an easy style quiz, Wantable will make sure you love what you get.

The Goodies

This time, the makeup box included several items that I wouldn't think I needed, but hey, trying new things is a big part of the Wantable experience. As for the getting-your-style part, I think they did pretty well. Here are the makeup loves, likes, and dislikes that I provided in the style quiz:

Love: Eyeliner, Lip Color, Nail Polish, Tools, Complexion Products

Like: Brows, Blush, Highlighter, Lash Product

Dislike: Bronzer

And these are the products I received:

Michael Marcus Lip Plumper

This is one of those things I didn't think I needed. I'm still not sure if I do need it; I don't really care how plump (or not) my lips are. With that said, and despite my initial doubt, this product does seem to work. My lips look fuller within minutes! That's kind of amazing to me, but like I said—I don't really care about lip plumpness. I like it better for the moisturizing feature and the minty scent.

Retail value: $20

Girlactik Beauty Eye Shadow in Sable

This has become one of my go-to eye shadows for day, night, and everything in between. I love the rich, warm brown color. I love how easy it is to blend. I love how I can simply apply a light layer for a casual look and add more to ramp up the drama.

Since I do my makeup in front of my large closet-door mirror (and forget about said makeup for the rest of the time that I wear it), I don't often use the mirror in the case. However, I can imagine that it could be useful for quick touch-ups. In fact, the case surface is reflective enough to work as a mirror, too.

Retail value: $19

JAPONESQUE Angled Foundation Brush

I wish I had some powder foundation to test with this brush. I read that you can use brushes to apply liquid foundation as well, so I gave it a go. It didn't work out. It was difficult to maneuver the foundation around my face, and most of it stuck to the brush instead of my skin.

The bristles are super soft, though, so I might keep the brush around to sweep over my face, no makeup added, just for fun.

Retail value: $24.50

Rainbow Honey Nail Lacquer in Ephemeral

I wasn't entirely sold on the color when I saw it in the bottle. I tend to prefer bright, bold colors for my nails, and light pink doesn't do much for me.

But, of course, I was wrong.

Sure, the base color is quite pale, but the sparkly-shimmer effect makes up for it tremendously. And OK, I actually really like the neutral color, too — makes it easier to match with outfits all across the spectrum. Plus, this is some long-lasting stuff! Chipping didn't start until more than a week later, when my nails had grown out noticeably.

Retail value: $10

Skiin Instant Skin Tightener & Line Filler

My mom tested this one. She liked that there was hardly any scent at all, but that's about it. It did seem to work as far as tightening goes — perhaps too much? My mom reported that the area where she applied the cream felt uncomfortably stretched and dry, with (weirdly enough!) no visible results. She stopped using it before the sample tube ran out.

Retail value: $0 (Free sample)

Is It Worth It?

The retail value of this box came out to $73.50 — so about 46% savings, which is somewhat low compared to past boxes. It's still a better deal than what I would have to pay for similar-quality products at full price…assuming I would actually go out to purchase similar products. And unfortunately, for half the products in the box, I wouldn't.

That's not to say the quiz got me wrong. I do like brushes, and I do like lip products. It just happened that foundation brushes and lip plumpers don't quite fit into my usual makeup routine.

But that's just me. I don't wear makeup very often anyway, so I didn't expect to be able to use every product every day. Actually, what I like about Wantable is the surprise factor, and the chance to try something that I wouldn't have purchased on my own. Even if the brush and the lip plumper didn't work out, I was able to play around with them for as long as I wanted. And even if they don't work for me right now, I'll still have them for special occasions or if Wantable sends me some loose powder foundation.

Final verdict: Worth it if you're used to spending premium prices on premium products; not so much if you already love drugstore makeup and their lower price tags.

Disclaimer: I received a free box for an honest review.

This article is from Amy Lu of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. (See also: Affordable Accessories to Kickstart Your Style)

About Wantable

Wantable is a Milwaukee-based company of about 15 employees spread to as far as New York City. They aim to match their customers with sure-to-love accessories, makeup, and intimates. For $40 (or $36 if you sign up for a subscription), you receive a number of goodies valued at $80 to $100, all which suit your personal style. How do they know what you like, you ask? Well, they ask — in the form of an illustrated style quiz. (See also: Surprise Yourself With a Wantable Box)

The Goodies

The accessories I've gotten from Wantable have been great so far. There were one or two misses, but nothing to make me want to return the whole box. The style quiz really seems to work! Here's a sampling of my loves, likes, and dislikes:

Love: Classic, Mix 'n Match, Earrings, Necklaces, Headbands

Like: Rock 'n Roll, Boho, Bracelets, Gold Tone, Silver Tone

Dislike: Rings, Watches, Sunglasses, Wood, Leatherette

And these arrived in the mail:

Akoya Necklace

Look at this. Look at it! I mean…wowzers. I am rendered speechless by how gorgeous this necklace is. It manages to make pearls and rhinestones — pretty traditional elements in jewelry — a little funky, but not so much that it would be out of place at an elegant soiree. I would absolutely pay full retail for this.

Retail value: $28

Lavi Bracelet

If you need a bracelet to go with the above necklace, this one will do quite nicely! The gold settings that make up the Lavi bracelet have tiny balls on the corners just as the settings on the Akoya necklace do. Don't worry about being too "matchy-matchy", though; transparent faceted gemstones make for an interesting twist. The extra bulky spring ring clasp is something I don't see every day (which is nice!) but it's also a little hard to maneuver (not so nice).

Retail value: $28

Calida Earrings

With these Wantable boxes, there's always something that gives me pleasant surprise. (I guess that's the point, isn't it?) From the front, the Calida earrings seem like a simple black round set in a textured gold frame. But from the side, you'll see that it's actually a crown. I guess they're…nice? They'll work fine if you need a basic piece of jewelry that's not too showy. I would be spending all day checking to see if they're perfectly horizontal on my ears, but that's just me.

Retail value: $20

Is It Worth It?

The total retail value of this box is $94. At $40 per box, this translates to $54 (57%) savings. While I am somewhat underwhelmed by the Imagine Earrings, I love everything else — especially the Akoya Necklace. You miles may vary, but for me, the beautiful necklace and bracelet make this box worth it! Check out Wantable now!

Disclaimer: I received a free box for an honest review.

This article is from Amy Lu of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Just answer a quiz and Wantable delivers! Although you won't know exactly what you'll get, you can count on Wantable to personalize your box just right. I received some beautiful, bold pieces in this box (yay!) and one that is a tad less impressive by comparison — but each one definitely suits my style.

For some people (myself included), the price might be a smidge high for a regular expense. But if you're used to paying premium for quality products, a Wantable box may actually help you save money. (See also: Where to Find Inexpensive Accessories)

About Wantable

Wantable aims to match their customers with makeup or accessories they're sure to love. The goodies in each box are hand-picked by Wantable's in-house and guest curators, based on the answers you provide in a super easy style quiz that only wants to know if you love, like, or dislike the options they present to you. For a one-off box at $40, or a subscription at $36 per box, you receive 4-6 full-size makeup products or several pieces of quality accessories (the exact number seems to change month to month). With each box valued at $80 to $100, you could save up to 60% on the latest in beauty and fashion. (See also: Wantable Makeup Box Review)

If makeup and accessories aren't your thing, Wantable has also rolled out an intimates box with stylish and comfortable essentials (think camis, tanks, socks, tights, panties, and soft bras).

The Goodies

We're back to accessories with this month's box. My previous accessories box was a hit overall. How does this one stack up? To give you an idea of what the Wantable team had to work with, here are some of my answers to the style quiz:

Love: Classic, Mix 'n Match, Earrings, Necklaces, Headbands

Like: Rock 'n Roll, Boho, Urban, Multi Tone, Beads

Dislike: Rings, Watches, Sunglasses, Leatherette

And here are the products they sent me:

Estella Earrings

Can something be both elegant and cute? Yes, and the Estella earrings prove it. The warm apricot gems in their stately oval shape, the tiny pearl-like beads at the top, and the whimsical bows and flowers all come together in old-fashioned quirkiness. My mom, who loves elegant and cute things, walked off with them at first sight. (See also: Affordable Accessories to Kickstart Your Style)

Retail value: $24

Aubrina Earrings

I don't usually buy black earrings because they get visually lost in my hair, but I can count on the Aubrina earrings to stand out thanks to the silver trim. They seem to recall the standard diamond shape that you often see on earrings, but the rounded corners — more clover than diamond — softens the look. The earrings feel a little heavy, but the backings are secure enough that I'm not at all worried about losing one.

Retail value: $22

Emmy Necklace

I think I would like the Emmy necklace more if the green bars were larger. It's such a beautiful color, and I want more of it! As is, I'm a little underwhelmed, but I can see this working as an everyday, I-just-need-a-spot-of-color kind of accessory.

Retail value: $28

Gretchen Necklace

I thought this necklace looked fairly ordinary at first. It's basically a circular pendant on a long chain — and that's what you would see from a distance. But then I really looked at it, and I fell in love with the details. The construction of the pendant (two main rings looped together by twine-like wire) and the many different textures bring interest to an otherwise simple shape. My only worry is that the out-facing rhinestones along the edge can damage sweaters and other delicate clothing. Then again, I can imagine the necklace being a mildly effective weapon — it's certainly sturdy enough!

Retail value: $24

Is It Worth It?

The retail value of everything in the box came out to $98. There is no way I would purchase any of these pieces at their full retail price, so the 59.1% savings is too far removed from my budgeting world to really get me excited. But if I think about it from a different angle — these pieces are gorgeous, and they're only about $10 each! — I would say this box is worth it.

I want to emphasize this box, because the cost for monthly boxes can really add up. (Seriously, there's no way I'd be able to keep this up if I weren't reviewing these boxes.) And while Wantable tries to match up the goodies with what you like, there's no guarantee or one-item return policy — full-box returns only. Still, I think the Wantable experience, quiz and semi-surprise and all, is a fun treat for special occasions and an awesome gift for the makeup or fashion inclined.

Disclaimer: I received a free box for an honest review.

This article is from Amy Lu of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. I received a box of jewelry to review last month, and those products were right up my alley — in terms of style if not in price. But if you're curious about their beauty offerings, too, I'm back to report my experience with Wantable's makeup box. (See also: Pretty, Cheap: Makeup Advice for the Frugal)

About Wantable

Here's a quick rundown on the Milwaukee-based company. (If you want the extended version, hop on over to my review of the Wantable jewelry box!)

Complete a survey regarding your style (for the jewelry box) or makeup preferences (for the makeup box) — basically, tell them if you love, like, or dislike certain looks or products.

Pay $40 for a single box or subscribe for monthly boxes at $36 each.

Wantable's curators match you up with products you'll probably like based on your survey answers. They put together a personalized box valued at $80-$100 (50-60% savings) and send it to you.

You receive the box and enjoy the products. (It's OK if you don't like them; the boxes include a prepaid return label.)

The Goodies

Wantable got my style just right with the jewelry box. How did they fare this time? Let's take a look at some of my survey responses:

Love: Eyeliner, Lip Color, Nail Polish, Tools

Like: Brows, Blush, Highlighter, Lash Product, Eye Shadow

Dislike: Bronzer

And here's what I got:

Brazen Cosmetics: Loose Brow Powder in Jane

I learned a very important lesson when I tried brow powder for the first time (meaning, this time) — a tiny bit of powder takes you so, so far. Once I figured out the right amount to use, the brow powder from Brazen Cosmetics was actually really easy to handle. It was creamy and it spread evenly. The Jane color might be too brown for my black hair and brows, but I'm willing to give it a chance to grow on me.

Speaking of growing, apparently this powder is fortified with green tea and rosehip extracts (mega antioxidants!) as well as vitamin E "to condition the hairs and inspire hair health and growth." Score!

Retail value: $18

FACE Stockholm: Matte Shadow in Joy

After the brow powder experience, I was much more careful about not going overboard again. It took a few passes with my brush before the color showed on my lids, and another few passes before it was as dark as I wanted for that day — so, not very dark. (I was only going to a Dungeons & Dragons session where tacos and buffalo wings are the normal fare; no need to glam out.)

Still, I think this color, a dark grayish brown called Joy, is versatile enough for a dragon-slaying day and a night around town. It's a nice, neutral color and the shadow itself seems very good at staying put in normal, not-sweating-a-bucket-or-dunked-in-water conditions. This matte shadow is definitely a keeper.

Retail value: $20

Cala: Travel Retractable Lip Brush

So uh, the lip brush broke on me before I even got it out of the plastic sleeve packaging. I pulled on one end, and the brush popped out followed by a narrow spring, and I was left with the outer casings still in the packaging, thinking, "Oh, crap! I broke it." I eventually figured out how to reassemble it, but there's no way the brush won't pop out again. (It does. It still does. See above, lower image.)

I really wanted to like this. I love the idea of a retractable lip brush because I hate dealing with the tiny brushes enclosed in makeup kits, and I'm paranoid about a full-sized lip brush smearing lip product all over my stuff if I haven't had the chance to clean it yet. Cala's retractable brush could've been the answer — but it wasn't. I might just apply small amounts of non-toxic glue in key spots to keep everything attached, but I'm disappointed that I would even have to go there.

Well, the brush itself gets the job done, so there's that.

Retail value: $8

29 Cosmetics: D'Vine Mascara

I like the D'Vine Mascara — I really do! After three coats of the water-based mascara, my lashes were longer, fuller, and darker than I had ever seen them. It wasn't clumpy, and I hardly felt the mascara on my lashes. In fact, by the end of the day, I'd forgotten that I was even wearing any. I did notice some smearing on my lower lid about two hours in, but that's pretty much normal for me and it's an easy fix. (I usually roll the end of a Q-tip in a small dab of lotion, then gently wipe at any messy or too-heavy makeup areas, such as smeared mascara or overenthusiastic brows. Works like a charm!)

Retail value: $26

Three Custom Color: Simply Beautiful Cheek Tint

I once tried the pressed powder blush that came with a makeup kit gifted to me long ago, but the results were…unfortunate. Still, I recently realized that I had the complexion of paste — I needed some color. Thankfully, Wantable sent me Three Custom Color's cheek tint, and I love it. It was easy to apply with my fingers and, when necessary, easy to tone down by gently wiping a clean finger over the excess. No fuss, no muss!

And for the record, Three Custom Color's Simply Beautiful Cheek Tint really is simply beautiful. It's such a gorgeous color. I count this as a Wantable win — I wouldn't have picked this on my own, nor would I have guessed it could go so well with my sun-deprived complexion. In case you missed it the first time, I LOVE IT!

Retail value: $22

Frownies Eye Gels

I love these eye gels less. This single set was a freebie (they usually come in packs of three sets), but you can use it for 2-4 treatments, 30 minutes each time, if you rehydrate the gels with the Frownies Rose Hydrator Spray. I did not have the Frownies Rose Hydrator Spray, so I looked around the web and found someone who used water instead with similar results. Good enough (and sufficiently cheap) for me!

Now, about the treatments. The eye gels are supposed to reduce fine lines and dark circles. The eye gels smelled like roses and they were refreshingly cool on my skin. And they were pretty secure where I placed them under my eyes, enough that I was able to walk around and be productive during the treatment. Then, about 10 minutes in, my eyeballs began to burn and I had to close my eyes for the remainder of that treatment. I noticed after removing the gels that the skin under my eyes looked smoother, but the gels did nothing for the dark circles. In fact, I think the strain of dried-out eyeballs made the dark circles even more prominent.

I figured, hey, maybe I wasn't supposed to keep my eyes open. The next two treatments, I made sure to keep my eyes closed for the whole 30 minutes. The burning sensation was less severe, but same deal — skin looked slightly better, dark circles seemed to worsen. (See also: 10 Spa Treatments You Can Do at Home)

Even as a freebie, I think I'll pass on this one.

Retail value: $0

Is It Worth It?

I noted in my last Wantable review that four to six brand new makeup products seem a bit much for me to handle, but it actually wasn't that bad. I already knew how to use the mascara and eye shadow (I mean, I get the gist of it), and though I've never used loose powder or cheek tint, I'm happy to have them in my makeup regimen now. The eye gels didn't work out for me, but I can shrug that off easily by virtue of it being a freebie that didn't count towards the total retail value of my box. The Cala lip brush was disappointing, but now I know that retractable lip brushes exist, so I can look for one that's (hopefully) better designed and (preferably) lower priced.

For me, that's where the value of a service like Wantable lies — it introduces me to products that I didn't know about, and I have it, right then and there. I can experiment, mess up, clean up, and look for ways to make it work, all in the comfort (and privacy) of my home, whenever I want, at my own pace. I can't really do that at makeup counters. And although there were some misses in this box, the hits were good enough to make me want to keep the goods rather than return everything. Remember, returns are all or nothing!

Of course, this is my first makeup box, and I don't own many beauty products, anyway. Odds were excellent that I wouldn't have and haven't used the kinds of goodies they send me. However, if you already have a sizeable cosmetics collection and you know what works for you, a makeup subscription with Wantable will probably just add more stuff that you won't ever finish using.

The retail value of everything in my box came out to $94, yielding 57% savings. I'll admit, that's a really good deal if you consider how expensive cosmetics can get…but I don't use expensive cosmetics. I can't justify it with my lifestyle and my budget. Likewise, with my lifestyle (and again, my budget), I can't justify a monthly subscription to Wantable. (See also: Cheat Sheet: Retail Markup on Common Items)

As an occasional treat for myself or a friend, though? Do you like trying out new things? If you're also into makeup or fashion accessories, then you'll want to check out Wantable. I gave it a test run recently, and while I'm not sure it's a good fit for me, I can definitely see how it can work out very well for others! (See also: 10 Places to Find Inexpensive Accessories)

About Wantable

Based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Wantable team aims to match you up with fashion and beauty products they know you'll love. From the About Us page:

"Each month our in-house and guest curators hand-pick beauty and fashion jewelry products from hundreds of quality boutique, specialty, and premium vendors to find the best on-trend items. Then we use each customer's unique profile and purchase history to select the perfect set of products just for them."

You may wonder, what's this "unique profile" about? It's pretty simple. They use data derived from a survey you fill out to make sure the products in your box will suit your tastes.

How It Works

You're launched into a tailor-made experience right from the homepage. Start by choosing between two categories of goodies — makeup or jewelry — then complete a survey that asks about your style and preferences. Once your order is in, they'll send you a box with 4-6 full sized beauty products or 3-5 pieces of jewelry and fashion accessories.

The survey takes about 5 minutes. The questions start off broad (What styles do you prefer? What kinds of products do you want?), then gradually shift to the details (How long do you like your necklaces? Do you like matte, shimmer, or glitter nail polish?). They give you some options — with pictures! — and you can move a slider to Love or Dislike, or leave it at Like. Wantable's "curators" will then use your answers to pick out items you're likely to love and leave out altogether the ones you dislike.

Each box is valued at $80 to $100. You can choose to buy a single box for $40 or subscribe for monthly boxes at $36 each. They ship automatically each month, and you can cancel or skip the subscription at any time. Returns seem pretty painless — just use the original box and the prepaid return label, and send it all back at any time — even if the products were opened or used. However, it's an all-or-nothing deal; you can't return one item and keep everything else. (I asked. More on that later.)

The Goodies

I took the survey for both categories but ultimately chose the box of jewelry and accessories. The box itself is a sturdy little thing that should fit in most mail boxes, and it's stuffed with enough packing material (namely, paper strips and a sheet of bubble wrap) to ensure that it all arrives safely. There's also a return shipping label, just in case.

To give you a sense of what the goodies in my box should look like, here are some of my choices on the survey:

Love: Classic, Glam, Rock 'n Roll, Quirky

Like: Earrings, Bracelets, Necklaces, Silver Tone, Gold Tone, Multi-Tone, Acrylic, Beads

Dislike: Seasonal, Rings, Wood, Skulls

And here's what they sent me:

Suzi Earrings

The stud earrings look pretty basic, right? Except they're huge. Well, not huge huge — just way larger than any pair of studs I already own. The scale and square shape gives an otherwise simple design that wow! factor I keep hearing about but never really see out in the wild. Until now.

Retail value: $20

Alisandra Bracelet

I wasn't really sold on the white-and-gold bow bracelet at first. I thought the design was cute but kind of forgettable, and I couldn't figure out how to get it open. Here's a play-by-play:

"I see a hinge, but I can't pull it open." Some gentle tugs. "Huh. It's still not opening." Stronger tugs. The bow twists to one side. "Oh no, I broke it! I broke it!" Bracelet slides open. "Wait. Hold on. I think I got this." I slide a notch into the corresponding hole, and swing the bow into place, securing the bracelet. "This is the best bracelet ever."

There wasn't even a survey question about whether I like everyday objects with interesting mechanics (I do)! Even though I know it's just a coincidence, I feel like the Wantable folks really get me with this bracelet.

Retail value: $26

Drew Earrings

I love these. I love them so much. They're exactly the kind of earrings that I go "Ooooh!" over — but far sturdier than most earrings I see at department stores.

Retail value: $22

Nicola Sunglasses

Guys, I really like how the sunglasses look, but I think I made a mistake here. I tend to overthink surveys, so it took me 15 minutes to do the Wantable jewelry survey when a normal person would only need five. But see, when I overthink things, I also tend to make really dumb mistakes — like answer that I like sunglasses (which I do, generally) when I can't wear non-prescription ones. I don't want to return the other pieces along with the sunglasses, so I can either get prescription lenses installed…or give them to my sister.

You're welcome, J.

Retail value: $15

I think Wantable's curators did a great job; I did really like what I got.

Is It Worth It?

I opted for the jewelry box because I don't usually wear makeup and I wouldn't know what to do with 4-6 full sized, brand new mystery products all at once. (Probably comb YouTube for makeup tutorials.) However, I was still a little skeptical about my choice. I can't really justify spending $40 on a few pieces of accessories, and the thought of steadily accumulating jewelry over the course of a $36/month subscription frankly scares me. Even if they are such well-made pieces.

But if you're already in the habit of spending a little extra for quality jewelry or makeup, Wantable may be a good fit for you. The total retail value of the items in my box was $83; at $40 per box, that's just over 50 percent in savings — and that's on the low end. If you receive a pricier box (say, max value of $100), you could stand to save 60 percent on goodies you might not have purchased at full price.

I can also see Wantable working very well as a gift — and they give you that option. They'll send the recipient a link to take the survey and will charge your card when an order goes through. It makes a nice gift for a young woman with a budding makeup collection, or anyone who likes surprises that aren't too surprising. I can think of a number of family/friends who would enjoy the Wantable experience, survey and all.

Final verdict? If the price doesn't faze you — totally worth it.

Disclaimer: I received a free box for an honest review.

This article is from Amy Lu of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
