One of the main reasons is that tourist hubs like Playa Del Carmen and Cancun have largely been protected from the worst of the unrest.

Recently, this has started to change and there have been gruesome and shocking incidents occurring in areas once thought unaffected. A bomb recently detonated on a passenger ferry from Playa Del Carmen that injured over 20 people. Cancun has seen various incidents of gun violence, including multiple murders on its white sand beaches and even a gunman firing at the beach from a jet ski. Another popular tourist area, Los Cabos in Baja California, has also felt the effects after a spate of grisly murders over the past year.

Despite the fact that it does have a serious crime problem, with more than 29,000 murders in 2017, Mexico is still generally very safe for visitors. There are other amazing destinations throughout Mexico that have not been hit by the same problems, and would make an excellent choice for a vacation. Here are five destinations in Mexico that are safer than Playa Del Carmen and Cancun at the moment. (See also: 8 Most Affordable Beach Towns in Mexico)

1. Guanajuato

The picturesque city of Guanajuato, which lies right in the center of Mexico, is still famed for its silver production in particular. At one point during the 18th century, it was one of the biggest producers of silver in the world, which meant it was flooded with wealth. This is clearly visible in the colonial mansions and ornate churches that you'll come across when wandering the narrow streets, many of which are so tight that cars can't navigate them.

The city meanders its way right up into the surrounding mountains, which are dotted with a mish mash of vibrantly colored buildings. Among them you'll discover museums, theaters, plazas surrounded by outdoor cafes, and various interesting marketplaces. The atmosphere in Guanajuato is laid back, making it the perfect relaxing city break with a cultural leaning.

2. San Cristóbal de las Casas

Tucked away in the mountains of Chiapas in southern Mexico, San Cristóbal is relatively cold due to the altitude, and far away from either coast, so you won't be getting any beach time. However, what San Cristóbal does have in abundance is character, culture, and colorful colonial architecture, which combined with its rich history, make it one of the most fascinating towns in the country.

The local population here has a uniquely high proportion of indigenous people from two main groups, the Tzotzil and the Tzelta. In the center, pastel colored buildings with red tile roofs line narrow cobbled streets, making it a picturesque place to explore. The mix of traditional and modern provides an interesting dynamic, with lively markets and street sellers offering handmade crafts. Those sit alongside bustling contemporary bars, cafes, and restaurants.

3. Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico and has a sizable expat population, thanks to its modern amenities, lovely beaches, and a lively night life. But despite the similarities it shares with the likes of Cancun and Playa Del Carmen, it's actually got a completely different feel to it. There are two faces to Puerto Vallarta, the old and the new, with one boasting vast resorts and visitor-oriented attractions, the other filled with cobbled streets and the feel of a long-established Puebla.

A wide and busy boardwalk runs from the heart of the old "Romantic Zone" along the seafront out toward the newer part of the city. Along its edges you'll find restaurants, bars, and shops selling everything from craft tequilas to souvenirs usually found in popular beach towns. Oaxaca City

Oaxaca City is currently enjoying something of a moment, having been billed by those in the know as Mexico's culinary epicenter. Regional delicacies hailing from this part of the country include the complicated and rich mole sauce; Tlayudas, which has been likened to a Mexican version of pizza; and chapulines (aka grasshoppers), which are widely used in various dishes. But there's more to Oaxaca than top notch noshes.

The entire historic center of Oaxaca city has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to the historic monuments found within its meticulously planned boundaries. Despite the historic buildings, it's a modern city with cool cafes, trendy bars, and boutique hotels belying their antiquated facades. There are colorful markets filled with locally crafted goods, smoky food halls serving up delicious treats, and numerous festivals throughout the year during which the city explodes into colorful parties. Tulum

This laid-back former hippy haven on the Yucatán Peninsula is actually in Quintana Roo, the same state where both Playa Del Carmen and Cancun are located. However, it couldn't be more different. It's a beach town that isn't actually located on the edge of the coast, and lies a couple of miles inland with a large, green national park separating the two.

The wide beaches nearby are fringed with boutique hotels, spa retreats, and easy going restaurants, so you can comfortably spend the day without heading into town. There are also some extremely well-preserved Mayan ruins inside the national park that provide spectacular views of the sea. The town itself is centered around a single main road that’s populated by traditional restaurants and bars.

A bit further out, there are also spectacular cenotes, natural sinkholes formed when limestone bedrock collapses, exposing the ground water beneath. They’re a little slice of Eden. Gran Cenote is the most impressive, with turtles and colorful fish surrounding you as you snorkel. In between moments of relaxation and travel-induced excitement, you do have to take care of them, after all.

Kids need meals and clean clothes, and they tend to ask a million and one questions — especially when they're somewhere new. And if you have kids in diapers or little ones who can't walk on their own, well, you can forget about having much of a "vacation" at all.

Now, let's say you get a chance to vacation without the kids. Sounds like a dream come true, right? It is, except that you may not be able to justify spending a lot of cash when you have kids at home. With that in mind, it's smart to look for trips that let you enjoy some kid-free time without breaking the bank. Here are a few options to consider.

1. Pet-sit somewhere new

If your budget is pretty small and you're willing to go almost anywhere, a pet-sitting gig may be an option you want to explore.

TrustedHousesitters.com, the biggest international housesitting and pet-sitting website, allows you to search for jobs all over the globe. You don't get paid for these gigs, but you can score a free Airbnb-style vacation experience if you're willing to watch pets while their owner is away.

Where can you go? A quick look at the website shows homes requiring pet care in destinations like New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Hawaii, and Dubai. While these destinations can be expensive to fly to, you may be able to get your flights covered for free with the right combination of travel credit cards.

There are plenty of more realistic and closer options as well, ranging from Las Vegas to Denver to Orlando, Florida. Most of these gigs require you to care for a few cats, a dog, or some chickens for a few days or a few weeks.

Competition can be stiff for attractive destinations, so you'll need to build an attractive profile and gather a few references. But then start bidding on the destinations of your dreams. It's a great way to score free accommodations in an interesting setting. (See also: 10 Tips for Landing the Perfect House-Sitting Gig)

2. Book a discount cruise

Don't like the idea of watching pets? Consider a discount cruise somewhere warm or, even more importantly, quiet. You can book fairly inexpensive seven-night cruises to destinations like the Caribbean starting at around $449 per person, and these cruises include your lodging, entertainment, and three meals a day at one price.

To find the best deals, consider low-cost cruise lines like Carnival and MSC Cruises. Also look for a cruise port you can drive to, which will vary depending on where you live. If you can skip airfare and drive to a cruise port in New Orleans, Louisiana; Florida; Galveston, Texas, or New York City, for example, you can reduce the costs of your trip considerably.

VacationstoGo.com is a solid place to search for discount cruises or just compare prices, and that's particularly true if you can cruise last-minute. The website's 90-day ticker connects you with unsold cruise cabins on soon-to-depart cruises for up to 82 percent off. Since not all cruises carry that kind of discount, you should also make sure to compare prices with cruises you book directly. (See also: 6 Money-Saving Items to Bring on Your Next Cruise)

3. Be reclusive at an all-inclusive

Booking an all-inclusive resort can be similar to booking a cruise since your accommodation, food, and entertainment is included for one low price. Many all-inclusive resorts are also marketed to adults only, meaning you won't have to deal with anyone's children. (See also: 11 Ways to Get the Most from Your All-Inclusive Vacation)

There are plenty of all-inclusive resorts you can book with rewards as well, including the adults-only Hyatt Zilara properties in Cancun, Mexico and Montego Bay, Jamaica. Both properties cost 25,000 Hyatt points per night based on double occupancy, but include your food, drink (with alcohol), and fun in the nightly rate. (See also: All-Inclusive Resorts You Can Book For Free With Points)

You will likely have to fly to all-inclusive resorts since the majority are located outside the U.S. But a good airline credit card strategy could help you score round-trip flights for free. The Southwest Rapid Rewards program is a good option for flights to the Caribbean since you get two free checked bags and flights frequently go on sale, but JetBlue can work well too, provided they fly out of your home airport. (See also: Best Co-Branded Airline Credit Cards)

4. Camping

If you're not into the resort scene and really just want to relax, camping can also work for a kid-free trip. It will certainly be a lot easier — and less stressful — with only yourself to care for versus your entire crew.

Camping can also be inexpensive if you choose a frugal trip versus "glamping" in a luxury cabin rental. You may be able to borrow a tent from a family member or friend and camp for little more than the cost of a camping spot at a state park, which could be less than $15 per night without electricity. Bring a cooler of food, a good book, and some fishing gear and you could get away for almost nothing. Carefree beach vacation

A beach trip can be frugal if you're able and willing to skip the big mega-resorts and book something inexpensive instead. Imagine yourself in an affordable Airbnb for the week in a beachfront destination like Panama City, Florida, for example. You won't need a huge place, since the kids will be at home, so a one-bedroom or studio condo should work great. Condos that could work start at less than $90 per night. (See also: 6 Affordable Beach Destinations)

If you don't live anywhere near the ocean, don't discount the possibility of booking a lakefront cabin, either. Tons of waterfront options are available on websites like Airbnb and VRBO.com, but you should look for deals within driving distance.

Why is the beach such an affordable option? Because water provides a lot of activities. Depending on where you are, you could partake in a number of affordable pursuits that range from fishing, to stand-up paddle boarding, to kayaking, to good ol' swimming. Or, you could curl up in a hammock and listen to the waves while you read, paint, draw, or sit by a campfire. Book a place with a basic kitchen, and you may not even have to leave.

6. Winery weekend

A winery weekend is a trip that's hard to pull off with the kids in tow. But when you're kid-free, you can have your wine, learn about it, and drink it, too. Of course, you can drive to Napa, California to sample locally grown grapes and stay in fancy resorts, but don't forget there may be wineries closer to home, too.

In Michigan, there are actual wine trails to explore — or, at least, strings of wineries and breweries you can visit one after another with hotel stops in between. This option can be affordable since you get to choose where you stay along the way.

If you don't want to drive, you can also book a winery weekend at an adjacent hotel or a winery with a hotel on-site. A Romanza Suite at the South Coast Winery Resort & Spa in Temecula, California starts at just $219 per night, for example.

You can stay right on-site, pay $15 to $20 per person for wine tastings and even take a winery tour complete with wine and charcuterie.

Like this article? In 2017, the greenback recorded its first drop in five years against the basket of currencies that make up the U.S. Dollar Index: the euro, Japanese yen, British pound, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona, and Swiss franc.

That trend looks set to continue over 2018, with analysts predicting further decreases throughout the year. While a weak dollar is great for U.S. companies selling to overseas markets, it's bad news for many travel lovers looking to head overseas. Put simply, you're likely to get less when you exchange your dollars into the local currency.

The euro and the Chinese yuan, in particular, are two currencies that have seen huge rises over the past year, meaning now's not the best time to visit these regions. Despite this general trend, there are some countries where the dollar has either continued to make gains or maintained its former strength and will still give you great bang for your buck. Here are nine places to travel in 2018 where the dollar is still strong. Mexico

Mexico has always been a go-to for American vacationers on the lookout for bargains, thanks to its convenient location and relatively low cost of living. It's also a stunningly diverse destination perfect for city breaks, beach holidays, adventure getaways, and everything in between.

While a decade ago a dollar would have bought you around 10 Mexican pesos, today you'll receive almost double that. Though 2017 saw unbelievable highs of over 21.5 MXN at the exchange booth, current rates of over 18.5 still mean your dollar will go much further than in years past. That said, it's not a place that's always been associated with great value, particularly when compared to some of its South American neighbors.

Not so today, at least for travelers carrying U.S. dollars. The Argentine peso plummeted 34 percent against the U.S. dollar in 2015, and has continued to fall ever since. As of the time of publishing, you'll receive more than 20 Argentine pesos per dollar, whereas 10 years ago you'd have only gotten around three. That gives you much greater purchasing power. Brazil

Brazil has a vibrant and colorful culture borne of a fascinating and mixed history that's completely unique to South America. With a land mass that's nearly as large as the United States, Brazil presents endless opportunities to explore some of the most exciting wildlife on the planet. It's packed full of iconic attractions such as Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue, a large chunk of the Amazon rain forest, and some of the world's most famous beaches.

While a decade ago, Brazil was considered to be a relatively expensive destination, it's become far more affordable over the past few years. The exchange rate has hovered above three Brazilian reals to the dollar since mid-2016, providing visitors with favorable exchange terms to explore this South American behemoth.

4. Colombia

Colombia is enjoying a moment in the spotlight, having been touted as a must-see destination by numerous travel writers over the past few years. No longer widely considered a prohibitively dangerous country, visitors are beginning to discover a different place from the stereotypes often portrayed.

Since 2015, the U.S. dollar has been performing consistently well against the Colombian peso, and this year hasn't seen any significant drop. The dollar's been hovering at around 3,000 pesos. That's a lot more value for U.S. travelers compared to the five years leading up to 2015, when it languished below the 2,000 peso mark.

5. The Philippines

Made up of more than 7,000 individual islands, the Philippines possesses some of the most idyllic tropical paradises in Southeast Asia. White sand beaches, warm turquoise waters, and picturesque rice terrace landscapes are just a few of the reasons that it's one of the most exciting destinations in the region.

The start of 2018 has seen the best exchange rates available against the Philippine piso in a decade, with a dollar buying you more than 52 pisos. That rate has been rising steadily since mid-2012 and doesn't appear to show signs of slowing down anytime soon.

6. Costa Rica

With stunning beaches on both its Caribbean and Pacific coastlines, jungles alive with eye-catching wildlife, and plenty of adventure to be had, the volcanic landscapes of Costa Rica are well known to visitors from the U.S. Not only is it a popular vacation destination, but there's an established expat community here as well.

Since 2014, the dollar has been fairly steady against the Costa Rican colon, and now trades at about 570 colon to the dollar. Five years ago, $1 would have only gotten you less than 500 colon. Laos

This Southeast Asian gem is one of the region's most underrated destinations, which means it has been largely untouched by mass tourism. It may not offer the variety of neighboring Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand (in particular there are no beaches or islands). But there are swathes of lush, green jungle, an interesting capital city called Vientiane, and delicious cuisine on offer.

Since 2013, the strength of the dollar has steadily risen against the Laotian kip, meaning you'll receive around 8,300 kip to the dollar. The dollar went as low as around 7,600 in 2013, so today's figures give you a significant amount more. Rates have been holding pretty steady since the turn of the year. (See also: 6 Easy Ways to Get Free Travel)

8. Nicaragua

This Central American country has been developing a reputation as something of an adventurer's paradise in recent years. Exciting outdoor adventures include volcano surfing, underwater cave diving, and activities like hiking, zip lining, and horseback riding. There are also numerous pristine beaches and beautiful colonial towns to be discovered.

Over the past decade, the exchange rate has risen steeply on a straight path in favor of the U.S. dollar. Ten years ago, you'd have gotten around 19 Nicaraguan córdoba to the dollar, whereas now you'll get more than 30, with the trend seemingly only improving.

Like this article? With a little planning and preparation, all that's left to do is lace up your boots, strap on your backpack, fill up your water bottle, and step out into a world of stunning scenery.

But unfortunately, many of the most famous trails in the world are expensive to walk due to costly entrance fees or a requirement to book a guided tour. A good example of this is the Inca Trail in Peru, where independent travel is not allowed. A four-day guided trek costs anywhere from $560 to $1,600 per person. But don't despair, it is still possible to explore some of the best locations on the planet without paying a cent. The West Highland Way, Scotland

Scotland is a fantastic place to find free hiking adventures because it is legal to camp on almost any unenclosed land, and very few trails charge a fee for access. The West Highland Way is a 96-mile route that runs through the picturesque Highlands, starting just north of Glasgow and finishing near Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain.

"The Way," as it's referred to locally, is commonly completed over seven days, but can be done in more or less time. The panoramic views of Loch Leven, rolling green hills, and plentiful birds and wildlife along the way have made this Scotland's most popular hike, with around 80,000 people walking part of it each year.

2. Kungsleden (The King's Trail), Sweden

This well marked, 270-mile path is located in the north of Sweden and is popular with both walkers in the summer and cross-country skiers in winter. The trail is broken down into smaller sections that are more manageable than the full route, the most popular starting in Abisko and winding past Kebnekaise, Sweden's tallest mountain.

The route is dotted with mountain huts that you can stay in for $50-$60 a night (with discounts if you join the Swedish Tourist Association for $35 a year). They provide a social meeting place for the thousands of walkers along the trail every year.

But to keep this trek cheap, it's best to have your own gear and wild camp for free. As a free camper, you can still use the facilities (like the toilets and garbage disposal) near the huts. If you camp within the hut area, you will have to pay, so just camp farther away and you're fine.

During summer, the north of Sweden has nearly 24 hours of daylight. The long days and bright sunshine make Kungsleden a magical experience at this time, with the surrounding wilderness taking on an eerily peaceful quality. El Camino de Santiago, Spain

As one of the oldest and most significant pilgrimages in the world, the Camino de Santiago is far more than just a hike. This network of routes through Europe has been walked for more than 1,000 years by people destined for the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where the remains of St. James are supposedly entombed. The most popular of these trails is the 500-mile Camino Frances, which begins in France and runs through northern Spain.

These days it's not just religious devotees who make the journey, but also history lovers and those simply in search of an interesting trek. The growing popularity of this adventure in recent years may be mostly due to the Hollywood movie, The Way, which does an excellent job of showcasing the area's spectacular scenery.

Many people opt to walk a smaller portion of the camino, and in order to get a "compostela" (pilgrim certificate), you only have to walk the last 62 miles of the route. The most popular sections take in many quaint villages, pretty churches, and mountain vistas. Larapinta Trail, Australia

The 138 miles of the Larapinta Trail offer a spectacular trek that passes through the heart of central Australia. It's home to a number of sacred Aboriginal sites as well as swimming holes, mountain views, deep gorges, and sheltered creeks. The sunrises and sunsets across this incredible landscape are breathtaking, filling the skies with improbable shades of pink and purple. While there are no trail fees, you may need to pay a few dollars to camp in some areas.

Though the full trail begins in Alice Springs and finishes at Mount Sonder, it is divided into 12 shorter sections, ranging from relatively easy to arduous. Depending on the amount of time and energy you have, you may want to tackle just a section or two. Winter (April to August) is the best time to go, as summer temperatures can top 100°F, which in a landscape as arid as this can be life threatening. Cirque of the Towers, Wyoming, U.S.

The Cirque of Towers lies in Wyoming's Wind River Range, which boasts some of the most rugged and remote landscapes in the continental U.S. The Cirque is a circular valley surrounded by granite mountains that are popular with rock climbers. Green and beige meadows are dotted with colorful wildflowers, overshadowed by the imposing, gray, lunar-like peaks.

There are many different routes to choose from around the Cirque, but the most popular one starts and finishes at the Big Sandy Trailhead. Depending on the path you take, it can be completed in a few days. There are no fees or permits needed to hike or camp here, which makes it even more popular among trekking enthusiasts looking to escape to the wilderness for a few days.

6. Sunshine Coast Trail, Canada

This 110-mile walk through British Columbia is the longest and the only free hut-to-hut hike in Canada. There are more than a dozen huts along the route that are designed to be shared on a first-come, first-serve basis, but camping is also popular.

While there are some jaw-dropping views out over the islands that dot the coastline, most of the trail is inland, featuring old-growth forests, creeks, lakes, and mountains. You'll have the opportunity to spot a wide array of wildlife, including bears, elk, wolves, and cougars. When you hit the vast Pacific Ocean, you may also spot dolphins, whales, sea lions, and otters. Daisetsuzan National Park is one of the country's most popular trekking locations, and its nearly 900 square miles offer plenty to explore. The "Grand Traverse" is the most popular and impressive trail, linking two active volcanoes found at the north and south ends of the park.

Grab a free map from the park ranger's office and work your way along the magical 34-mile hike, which is possible to complete in five to seven days. There are huts on the route, two of which charge a fee but the rest are free, and you can also camp — just watch out for the brown bears. Picturesque, snow capped mountains, plentiful wildlife, and green virgin forests are just some of the highlights to expect.

Like this post? Organizing flights, accommodations, packing, getting to the airport, and making sure everything at home is sorted for while you're away can easily frazzle the nerves. Because of this, the last thing you want to have on your mind is whether or not your destination is a safe place to visit.

What constitutes a safe country is clearly a contentious and subjective question, and there's no definitive way to determine it. Different countries have their own methods to measure crime, and of course, threat levels are constantly changing. Currently, there are 45 countries that the U.S. Department of State has issued travel warnings for and there's even a Worldwide Caution in place.

The good news is that by many measures, the U.S. actually ranks quite poorly, meaning that by leaving the country, you're likely to be heading somewhere already considered safer. However, choosing a destination that's considered "safe" can still be tricky. Here are five of the safest countries to travel to in 2018, based on current crime rates and existing security alerts.

*All statistics are taken from the U.S. Department of State and the Institute for Economics and Peace's 2017 Global Peace Index report's Societal Safety And Security Domain section.

1. Iceland

Iceland's popularity has skyrocketed over the past decade with visitor levels rising from around 422,000 annually in 2006 to over 1.7 million in 2016. This is thanks largely to a concerted effort by tourism authorities to increase visitor numbers, as well as Icelandic airlines offering affordable transatlantic stopover options. As a result, the gorgeous landscapes, giant volcanoes, natural hot springs, spurting geysers, and vast glaciers, plus the likelihood of witnessing the magical Northern Lights have made Iceland extremely popular.

Iceland is also one of the safest countries on earth, coming in at the number one spot on the Global Peace Index, as it has done continuously since 2008. It has extremely low crime rates, and has no current alerts or warnings issued by the Department of State. The Overseas Security Advisory Council report 2017 report for Iceland states "crime continues to be lower than in most developed countries and countries of similar size and demographics." (See also: How to Wisely Choose Your Next Travel Destination)

2. Sweden

This stunning Scandinavian country nestled in between Norway and Finland celebrates the outdoors in a big way. Its vast natural landscapes are decorated with huge lakes, fast-flowing rivers, and gigantic glaciers, as well as forests, sandy beaches, and hundreds of coastal islets. The country's wide reaching Freedom to Roam laws mean that every citizen has the opportunity to take full advantage of them. It also has a number of charming, colorful cities packed with culture and history such as Stockholm, Malmo, and Gothenburg.

Sweden is rated fifth on the Global Peace Index table, making it one of the safest countries to visit. Though it has extremely low levels of crime, OSAC's 2017 Sweden report claims that the national averages are bolstered by low rates outside of the urban areas. It does, however, concede that, "The general crime rate in Sweden is below the U.S. national average," and there are no Department of State warnings at this current time.

3. New Zealand

Spread across two main land masses known as the North and the South islands, New Zealand, and more specifically Queenstown, is often referred to as the "adventure capital of the world." It's where the first commercial bungee jump was born, is a popular site for paragliding, sky diving, and hang gliding, and you can also enjoy extreme water sports like jet boating. But it's not all pulse-raising activities; New Zealand is also considered a place to escape into nature and enjoy the widespread wildlife.

This country of two halves lands at number two on the Global Peace Index report as the first of only two countries outside Europe to appear in the top 10. There are no Department of State warnings on New Zealand and the OSAC 2017 New Zealand report says, "In general, crime is less prevalent in New Zealand than in major cities in the U.S."

4. Japan

Made up of hundreds of volcanic islands, Japan is well known for its diverse natural landscapes and its modern cities. Deeply rooted, centuries-old tradition sits seamlessly alongside contemporary cutting edge technology, and this unique combination of ancient and current can be seen in everything from the culinary scene to the architecture. Futuristic robot shows are as popular as wilderness hikes in national parks, and up-to-the-minute technology is as revered as the many temples and shrines.

As the other non-European entrant on the Global Peace Index, Japan appears at number 10 on the list. For a country of its size and stature, the crime rates are remarkably low, particularly for murder and gun crime, which some reports suggest has been virtually eradicated. With no travel alerts or warnings, it's certainly one of the safest options for 2018.

5. Portugal

Located in the southeast corner of Europe, Portugal has long been a popular tourist destination, thanks to its warm climate and diverse culture. In its role as one of the most prominent sea faring nations, Portugal built up a vast global empire. Historic cities, bountiful beaches, and fine food and wine are what attract the majority of visitors to this fascinating country.

Coming in at number three on the Global Peace Index, Portugal "has a relatively low rate of violent crime" and "is a generally safe country" according to the 2017 OSAC Portugal Report. It's worth noting, however, that petty thefts and muggings are said to be higher in tourist areas around peak times. It's one of the seven wonders of the world. But even just getting to Machu Picchu is a hassle. There are no roads going there, meaning your travel options are limited.

Most people get to Machu Picchu by train, but that'll cost you $130 or more round-trip. On top of that, you'll need to pay for entry into Machu Picchu itself, which runs about $40.

Some more intrepid travelers get to Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail trek with an established outfitter — but that could set you back several thousand dollars, and you'll need to book it weeks or months in advance.

So, what's a last-minute, adventurous, and/or budget-minded traveler to do? Luckily, there's another way — but you'll need to be able to hike for a couple hours, carry an overnight change of clothes, and not be afraid of heights!

Step 1: Purchase Machu Picchu tickets

Heads-up: You can't buy the tickets to get into Machu Picchu at the gate. There are only 2,500 tickets sold per day into Machu Picchu, and so you'll need to buy a ticket in advance. You can do this through a travel agency, or directly from the Ministerio de Cultura, either in-person or online. (Here's a great overview of how to navigate the confusing website).

Step 2 (optional): Book accommodations in Aguas Calientes

No matter how they arrive at Machu Picchu, most people will stay overnight in Aguas Calientes. It's the town closest to Machu Picchu, and its name comes from the hot springs nearby.

Many accommodations in Aguas Calientes are fully booked in advance, so if you decide to stay, make sure you reserve a room or bed before you get there. Don't worry; this doesn't need to be done months in advance as if you were hiking the Inca Trail, but it's still a good idea to do it before you go.

Step 3: Take a mini bus ride from Cusco to Hidroelectrica

You'll need to make a mini bus reservation from Cusco to Hidroelectrica (a hydroelectric plant located near Aguas Calientes). You can very likely do this through your hotel or hostel, or any booking agency in Cusco. Alternatively, you can book your tickets on MachuPicchuBusTickets.com. Round-trip tickets cost about $30, and the minibuses will leave Cusco in the morning.

It's best to pack a light overnight bag. Leave the rest of your luggage at your hotel or hostel for when you come back.

Make sure to buckle up once you get on the mini bus (also known as a collectivo, or combi in the local lingo) because it'll be a seven-hour ride through some pretty harrowing one-way mountain passes. Drivers usually stop once for food and bathroom breaks along the way, otherwise just sit back and enjoy the scenic (and sometimes fear-of-heights-inducing) ride.

Step 4: Hike from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes

The path from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes passes through a shady tropical forest and follows a crystal-clear river. Listen for the chirping and chattering of bright green parrots.

The bus driver will let you off at Hidroelectrica. From here it's a flat, easy, and beautiful walk through the jungle along the railroad. There is a small footpath that weaves its way back and forth along the tracks, as well as a few small railroad bridges.

Make sure to stay on the footpath where possible, and if you do need to cut across the tracks, check in both directions for oncoming trains. They can be very quiet and sneak up on you quite easily. It's a two- to three-hour walk along this track, but it'll be over before you know it.

If you need food or water, there are plenty of local families with small stands set up along the route. If you can, at least buy a fresh banana from them, likely picked from the plentiful banana groves that line the tracks!

Step 5: Find your accommodations

Now, on to relax before your big day! Soak in Aguas Caliente's hot springs, or enjoy a nice meal in a local restaurant. You'll need to get up early the following day if you want the best views of Machu Picchu.

Step 6: Make your way to Machu Picchu

You have two options to get up to Machu Picchu from here. The easiest is taking the bus to the top, but be prepared to spend a long time waiting in line (not to mention the $12 one-way ticket fee). The only way to buy this ticket is in-person at the little kiosk right next to the bus station (across the street from the visitor information kiosk). It may be better to buy your ticket the night before you actually plan to go up to Machu Picchu, since people will start queuing up for the bus as early as 4 a.m.

Look for this kiosk next to the bus station in Aguas Calientes to buy tickets to Machu Picchu.

If you're really pinching pennies, however, it's free to simply hike up to the top and back down. To be one of the first in line to get into Machu Picchu (and get the best uncluttered photos) you'll need to head up before the sun even rises, so be sure to pack a headlamp. The hiking trail to the top is well-marked and starts across the bridge on the outside of Aguas Calientes (the one you passed coming into town).

Be prepared; this hike is a quad-buster. It's straight uphill for one or two hours before you reach the top.

Step 7: Through the gates to Machu Picchu

The most diehard photographers and explorers will be in line to get into Machu Picchu well before the sun comes up. The gates officially open up at 6 a.m., however.

When you're done, you can either hike back downhill or take the bus (for another $12) back to Aguas Calientes.

Step 8: Return to Cusco

It is possible to go back to Cusco on the same day you visit Machu Picchu, but you'll need to cut your visit short. Most mini bus drivers leave Hidroelectrica at 2 p.m., so you'll need to head down from the mountain and hike to Hidroelectrica to meet them in time. You can hike back the way you came to Hidroelectrica and wait for the driver to call out your name for your ride to Cusco.

Alternatively, you could stay in Aguas Calientes for another night so you have a full day at Machu Picchu. It's a bucket-list item, after all — you don't want to miss out!

Like this article? It's not too late to book a New Year's Eve getaway. You just need to know where to go. Get in gear for the New Year with these fab-but-affordable destinations that promise plenty of holiday cheer.

1. Durham, North Carolina

Head south to enjoy temperate weather while you give 2017 the kiss-off with a stay at the ultra-stylish and super-chic Unscripted Durham Hotel, the rooms at which start at just $169/night for the holiday. New Year's Eve festivities (tickets are $39-$49 per person) include entertainment in the rec-room-style lobby with Champagne and hors d'oeuvres; music by local DJ Guv'nor; and a tarot card reader who'll give you a sneak peek at what's ahead. During your stay, visit the on-premise all-day, a coffee shop/wine bar.

2. Orange, Virginia

Dodge the crowds and cozy up in the quaint town of Orange, Virginia, at the historic Holladay House Bed and Breakfast — it's nearly 190 years old — where you'll spend an elegant New Year's Eve just like our ancestors did. Well, sort of. Reservations will be made on your behalf at one of six local restaurants where you can enjoy a delicious dinner before watching the ball drop and tucking yourself in for a restful night's sleep. You can take your time in the morning since breakfast hours will be extended and checkout isn't until noon. If you plan a three-night stay, you can score 25 percent off the third night with code HOLIDAY25 at checkout, bringing the grand total to around $500. Pretty good price to crash just a few miles away from James and Dolley Madison's Montpelier home, which you should definitely visit while you're in town.

3. Minneapolis, Minnesota

Wanna get hygge with it? Pronounced hoo-guh, hygge is a Scandinavian concept that embodies coziness and contentment, and there's no better place to hand over the holiday reins in that regard than in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, where you'll find hygge virtually everywhere. Sip hot cocoa at a ski lodge, bask in the glow of a fireplace at a bed-and-breakfast, snowshoe by candlelight, gaze upon the majestic Northern Lights, and thaw out at one of the local spas — all to your wallet's delight. In fact, many outdoor activities are free or inexpensive (11 state parks across Minnesota are hosting free, guided First Day Hikes to kick off 2018), and nearby resorts and lodges offer prime deals during winter months, including New Year's Eve.

4. Las Vegas, Nevada

You won't need to buy tickets to a fancy party if you're spending the last night of 2017 in Sin City. Everybody pours out of the casinos onto the Strip to watch the choreographed fireworks display while throwin' a few back (sidewalk drinks are legal in Vegas, y'all!), and you can score incredible deals like $163 a night at the 3.5-star rated Stratosphere hotel, available on value-hotel search site GoSeek.com.

5. Couples can cop a comfy cabin starting at $125 per night, but if you make it a family or buddies' weekend rates can dip as low $50 per person for larger groups.

6. New Orleans, Louisiana

The Papa Noel package at New Orleans' Windsor Court offers guests up to 20 percent off the best available rate (rates start at $188) from now to January 6. For $95 per person, plus tax and gratuity, guests can choose from delectable menu items such as poached lobster, rack of lamb, and cranberry bread pudding. After dinner, stop by the Polo Club Lounge to enjoy live jazz and a selection of fresh-start Champagne while watching the ball drop.

7. Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Make your New Year's festivities a wet-and-wild, budget-friendly family affair in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, where the Glenwood Springs Athletic Club will stay open until 1 a.m. to usher in 2018. Amenities include a butler door with light switches that indicate when service has been delivered to your cabin (food, fun surprises); carriage rides, which are available to and from your cabin upon check-in and check-out, and for any other outings you'd like to take; heated floors; fireplaces; in-cabin massages; candlelit dinners in your cabin with food from local restaurants; and personal outdoor fire pits for getting all snuggly under the covers.

Like this article? It's already summer, and you have yet to save for a summer vacation. No worries. There are many ways you can still enjoy a family getaway on the cheap. If you get creative, adjust your expectations, and put in a little extra effort, you can get some much needed rest and relaxation without going into debt.

1. Gather last-minute funds

Maybe you haven't done your big spring clean-out. You can host a yard sale this weekend and get some cash for your old treasures. Check out local resale shops for clothing, children's items, and more. I've made a couple hundred dollars after a big clear out of toys and baby clothes to put toward time away. My husband is a teacher and has taken on summer gigs (like being a camp counselor) to make money to put toward travel.

Sit down and write up a list of any and all the ways you think you might be able to make some quick cash. Other ideas include selling clothing on sites like Poshmark, finally rolling all that loose change, selling your unwanted event tickets on StubHub, and more. (See also: 25 Ways to Make Money Today)

2. Adjust your expectations

Consider approaching your usual vacation in a new way. Why not skip going out to eat and save a ton by trying to cook your way through each day? If you reserve a room or suite with a kitchen, this will be much easier. Try spending no more than you would on a normal week of groceries at home. Also, don't get sucked in by high-priced tourist attractions — many beaches and parks you'll find at your destination are free.

There are many ways to cut dollars along your journey. If your hotel offers a free breakfast, take advantage. Call ahead to see if there are any perks included in your reservation, like free transportation, reduced ticket prices to local attractions, or special nightly events. If you have yet to secure your room, try staying a little farther away from the most alluring towns and attractions. Even driving 10 to 15 minutes can save you hundreds.

3. Check out your state

I recently researched everything the great state of New York has to offer in the way of travel. And I found plenty. Fresh water beaches on Lake Ontario. Majestic lake and mountain views in the Adirondacks. Romantic castles in the Thousand Islands region. Wineries and waterfalls in the Finger Lakes. There's so much to do within a couple hours of my front door, and I didn't even know it.

Skip the pricey plane ticket and check out your state. You could plan a road trip visiting different regions, spending just a day or so in each area. Or you could choose the coolest thing you find and spend a couple days there. If you're not going to the more traditional vacation hot spots — the beach, for example — you may save a good chunk on hotels and eats.

4. Scope out campgrounds

If you have yet to try camping, you're missing out on an extremely inexpensive way to see the world. Try camping out at some of our country's National Parks. In fact, you can stay for an entire week at some of them for less than $200. Can't afford to go far? Check out state or even county parks. One of my favorites is in the Finger Lakes. Camping is dirt cheap, yet the setting gives you million dollar views and free swimming to boot.

If you're not the outdoorsy type, some campgrounds offer glamping, aka glamorous camping, in cabins, yurts, and other accommodations that will feel more indoors than tent camping. (See also: 5 Ways to Save on Your Next Glamping Trip)

5. Go in with a friend (or two)

My family is actually taking a trip with another family this summer. We're both on a limited budget. Our kids are the same ages, and we like doing a lot of the same things. So, we hunted around to find a house rental to split in the Catskills. One of our shared interests is cooking, so we've already planned our homemade meals for the week. The house is close to the municipal pool, so that will be great for cooling off and it only costs a few dollars for a weekly pass.

What do we plan to do for entertainment? Mostly just hang out. If you are close enough to certain friends or even family, sharing space can be a huge money-saver. And you'll have so much fun being together that you won't need to spend money to find things to do. If you're really strapped, your friends may even offer to let you come visit them for free. We've also done that in the past, and it was so much fun.

6. Consider day tripping

Who says you have to spend the night to get away? There are tons of places you can pack up and go for the day and get some much-needed R&R. I like to go the old fashioned way and look at a physical map of my area. I have drawn a radius that gets us places in two or three hours (or less). In my circle, I can hit up gorgeous gorges and wineries in Ithaca, NY. Spend the day trekking around Philadelphia or New York City. We can even jaunt down to the Crayola Factory or Hershey Park for the kids.

One of my close friends cannot afford to go on a full vacation in the summer. So, she takes her family on an incredible day trip most weekends. She packs lunch and snacks, too. Her kids absolutely love the adventures they find, and it keeps the fun going all summer long.

7. Research housesitting

Another friend of mine recently offered us her apartment near the Flatiron district of NYC because she needs a house- and cat-sitter while she backpacks around Europe. Unfortunately, we're not able to go. But seriously! What an amazing opportunity to spend a week in the heart of the City for basically nothing.

Did you know that people post house-sitting gigs online? It's a great way to get a super awesome vacation, and fast. Try searching around on Craigslist or targeted sites like House Sitting America or Care.com. You can even put out a call on your Facebook to see if any friends are in need of this service. Gigs vary from place to place, but many will let you bring your pets and family. Some even pay you for your caretaking services. Here are five spectacular and affordable fall getaways suitable for a romantic weekend or the whole family. (Each trip was calculated for parties of two or more; travel may be extra.)

1. Sonoma and Napa Valley Wine Country Tours

Cost: Under $250

It's peak fall harvest season in wine country, which makes it an ideal time to go. Most of the Napa and Sonoma Valley tours are less than $250 (for two), offer free transport from San Francisco, come with a free meal, and include a visit to two or three wineries with food and wine pairings. Napa Valley Wine Trolley, Dynamic Napa Wine Tours, and Wine Country Tours Shuttle all come in under your $250 budget.

2. Big Bear Lake, California

Cost: Under $500

Snag yourself a lakeview room at an area resort in Big Bear Lake for $89 to $150 per night. While many of the area lodging accommodations don't have on-site dining, some offer suites with full kitchens, living, and dining areas. Fun area activities include mining, aerial and segway tours, water sports, fishing, ziplining, and "funplexes." For a two-day getaway, you'll stay well within your budget.

3. Coast Starlight; Los Angeles to Seattle

Cost: Under $500–$1,000

Amtrak offers a scenic West Coast shoreline getaway; the Coast Starlight. This train runs daily from Los Angeles (LAX) to Seattle (SEA, SVF) and passes through the majestic coastal towns of Santa Barbara, the Bay Area, and Portland. Travel time for the entire trip is roughly 35 hours. Tickets cost under $150 per person and include sleeping car cabins, or roomettes, which are a part of service. Business class can accommodate two for around $600, while a family room that sleeps four is under $1,000. Business class travelers receive free Wi-Fi, complimentary bottles of water, and a $6 coupon redeemable towards the purchase of food and beverages. And if you reserve a sleeping car, all dining car meals are on the house. I can tell you, the food is catered and quite good; it's well worth the extra cost!

4. Epcot International Food & Wine Festival

Cost: $500–$1,000

From September 25th through November 26th, Walt Disney World is hosting its International Food & Wine Festival at Epcot World Showcase in Florida. Tickets are $96 per person for an all day pass. A stay at nearby resorts ranges from $162 for a moderate resort to $284 or more for a deluxe resort. Budget accommodations start at $85 per night. Lake Buena Vista is also home to stretches of white sand beaches and world-class golf courses.

5. Twin Farms Resort, Vermont

Cost: $2,500–$5,000

Okay, this one isn't frugal at all. But if you have fine taste and a budget to match, for $2,000-$2,500 per night, Twin Farms in Royalton, Vermont is the ideal fall destination. This five-star, all-inclusive bed and breakfast situated on 300 acres overlooks Silver Lake and has 20 guest accommodations. The amenities include a gym, pool, and luxury spa, as well as kayaking, yoga classes, fishing, hiking, biking, games, tennis, and daily farm-fresh meals prepared by Chef Nathan Rich.

What are some of your favorite fall getaways?

Like this post? If this is how you think, you may never get away. Don't assume that a little relaxation and adventure is out of your budget. You might be surprised by the number of inexpensive things you can do and see — in just one weekend. (See also: Best Travel Rewards Credit Cards)

1. Go Camping

Camping is not only easy on your pocketbook, it offers the perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy quality time with friends and family. There is no television, no computer — and depending on how deep you venture into the woods, maybe even no cell service. Take in the fresh air, talk, or simply chill. There is no better way to clear your mind and recharge your body.

2. Hit the Beach

Other than paying for parking, going to the beach is practically free. Sure, you'll have to book a hotel for one or two nights and grab a couple of meals, but you don't have to pay a dime for activities. Bring your bike or skates and hit the boardwalk, or challenge your travel mate to a game of volleyball or Frisbee. (See also: 40+ Cheap, Fun Things to Do This Weekend)

3. City Sightseeing

Staying in the city is anything but cheap, and don't get me started on parking fees. But if you book a hotel in a neighboring suburban city and then take the train or bus, you can enjoy a cheap weekend in the city. Book a hotel in New Jersey if you're headed to Manhattan, or stay in Alexandria, Virginia if you're planning a weekend in the nation's capital.

4. Bed and Breakfast

Looking for a new experience? If so, book a weekend stay at a bed and breakfast. It's the perfect romantic getaway. Enjoy a private room and personal service. And since many B&Bs are located off the beaten path, they typically offer a quieter, more peaceful atmosphere.

5. State Fair

Carnival rides, food, animals, music and other live entertainment — there is no shortage of things to see and do at a state fair. And the best part, admission won't break the bank — $8 to $12 depending on your location. Yes, you have to pay extra for rides and activities. But you have control over how much you spend on extras.

6. Mountain Getaway

Spending a weekend in the mountains might be the prescription if you're looking for a little peace of mind. There is just about something for everyone, and many activities won't cost a cent. Enjoy a scenic drive, rock climb, hike, canoe, or mountain bike. Plus, this is the perfect location to glimpse natural scenery, such as natural bridges, waterfalls and caverns. (See also: 10 Places to Go for Inspiration)

7. Amusement Park

Amusement park admission prices have definitely skyrocketed in recent years, with many general admission prices around $60. But there are ways to get in for less. Go online and search for discounts or coupon codes, and check the newspaper and grocery bags for coupons. A watchful eye helped me score buy-one-get-one-free tickets to both Six Flags and Busch Gardens.

8. Book a Last-Minute Cruise

If you're within driving distance of a cruise port, you might be able to save big on a last-minute cruise. For example, a four-day, three-night Bahamas cruise from Miami, Florida starts at $179 per person. Not a bad deal considering that this price includes food, entertainment, activities, plus a weekend in the tropics. (See also: Best Travel Reward Credit Cards)

9. National Park

If you're the outdoorsy type, visit one of many national parks throughout the United States. In all likelihood, you're within driving distance of at least one park. Lace up your boots and enjoy some day hiking, or pitch a tent and enjoy a night under the stars. There's also wildlife viewing, bicycling, fishing, boating, and winter activities.

10. Road Trip to Nowhere

Pack the car, choose a highway and hit the open road with no destination in sight. Pretty risky, but so much fun, as you don't know where the road will take you. Check out different cities along the way and tour landmarks. And when you're tired of driving, stop at a nearby hotel and continue your adventure in the morning. (See also: Reasons to Travel Off the Beaten Path)

11. Timeshare Weekend

I know — sitting through a 90-minute presentation for a timeshare that you're not buying is painful at best. But if you're looking for an inexpensive getaway, this might be your ticket. Sit through a presentation, and the resort will comp your weekend visit or discount the regular room rate. And sometimes, they'll toss in dinner vouchers and free tickets to local attractions.

12. Bus Tour

Why drive when you can sit back and let someone else do the work? Bus trips are an inexpensive way to break your boring weekend routine. Plus, some tours include the cost of a hotel for one or two nights. Drive 20 or 30 minutes to a neighboring area, book a hotel room and spend the weekend exploring your own city. Maybe there are local museums, festivals, outdoor entertainment, and other activities that you've overlooked. Then again, you may prefer sitting in your hotel room all weekend, enjoying a break from cooking and cleaning.

14. House Swap

Maybe you live in the city and you're looking to spend your weekend at the beach. And maybe your friend by the beach wants to liven things up over the weekend. Why waste cash on a hotel when you can swap houses? Driving to the house will be your largest expense, as there's always the option of preparing your own meals.

Do you have other ideas for inexpensive getaways?
