You know you have to do it, but the sweating and the sore muscles aren't always appealing. Luckily, there are ways to get your sweat on and actually enjoy yourself, especially if that workout allows you to hang with your favorite four-legged pet. If your love of fitness rivals your love of animals, check out these ways to integrate your two passions for a healthier and happier lifestyle.

1. Goat yoga

Goats are frickin' adorable, that we knew already. But they've probably never been more adorable than when they're acting as therapy animals in the hot new exercise trend sweeping the nation that combines goats and yoga. Lainey Morse, who created the Goat Yoga concept on her farm in western Oregon, has people clamoring to get into her classes, which are starting to expand across the country.

These classes progress as you might expect — humans move through yoga positions while the goats do whatever the heck they want, like jump on your back while you're in child's pose. Morse says the classes are helping people with anxiety and depression, but there are other mental and physical health benefits associated with this type of animal-assisted therapy, such as: reducing loneliness, lowering blood pressure, and diminishing overall pain. (See also: 5 Things Yoga Can Teach You About Money)

2. Horseback riding

If your fitness goals include abs of steel, hop on a horse. Riding equines requires a decent amount of core strength to stay balanced, and continued riding can improve posture in day-to-day activities. You'll develop better coordination, enhance muscle tone and flexibility (your inner thighs and pelvis get the biggest workout on a horse), and you'll also enjoy the meditative effects that come with focusing on the ride and staying on the horse. Giddy-up!

3. Tending to horses

If riding horses isn't your thing, then tending to horses can satisfy your urge to interact with the animals while staying fit. London-based Pilates educator Julie Driver — who uses the exercise system to enhance riders' skills — says that there are plenty of other ways to tone up in the company of mares and stallions.

Alongside the benefits of riding itself, Driver suggests these other activities to break a sweat.

Mucking out soiled bedding in the stables

You'll feel the burn in your biceps and forearms after wielding that pitchfork for a period of time.

Carrying straw bales

The average straw bale weighs between 35 and 55 pounds, so replacing the soiled straw that you removed while mucking out the stall will have you burning calories and using your upper body as you move the bales around.

Grooming your horse

Drive suggests using long sweeping strokes to really clean your horse and move your shoulders.

Filling and carrying water buckets

Bend your knees and pick up those buckets. Preferably one in each hand to make sure you're balanced.

"All these chores involve an increase in heart rate and aerobic activity with the added benefit of being in the fresh air and outside of a gym environment," adds Driver. They can all be done as an alternative to the gym, and you could even time yourself!"

4. Dog walking

If you want to keep things moving but not overexert yourself, dog walking may be the gig for you. It's easier than ever to pick up this side hustle that allows you to trot somebody else's pup around the neighborhood while getting paid for it. I offer my services on Rover.com (probably the most popular peer-to-peer pet service out there), which is primarily a dog-sitting service, but there is a walking component to it. Dog agility training

Plenty of dog moms and dads send their pups away to be professionally trained, but now there are programs available, like Thank Dog! Bootcamp, that offers integrated human and canine personal fitness so you and your pooch can get physically and mentally fit together. This particular program is only available in Tennessee and Ohio at the moment, but you may be able to find something similar in your area with a quick online search. (See also: 7 Ways to Get Fit With Your Dog)

6. Cat hiking

Mallory Crusta is the owner of Wildernesscat Natural Pet Care, a site dedicated to "providing natural health solutions for adventurous cats." She's also a supporter of "adventure cats," a social media-fueled phenomenon that has cats stepping outside of the home and exploring the great outdoors. While kayaking, sailing, camping, and even skiing with cats are all activities growing in popularity, hiking is one with real potential for improving your fitness.

"Of course, it's crucial that your cat is comfortable with a leash and harness long before you start exploring the local state park," Crusta adds. "Take a few test walks, first through your house, then in the backyard, to gradually acclimate your cat to the experience. It's also critical that your hiking cat is trained to come when called. Treats are often the key to training: use them to teach your cat to follow you."

7. Weightlifting for livestock

I have friends who raise chickens on their property and they can attest to the strength-training they receive by hauling around feed bags and maintaining the coops. "The Critter Lady" Kelly Meister-Yetter also told me about her three flightless domestic ducks living in her backyard, and just about every facet of their care involves weightlifting.

"Their bags of feed weigh 50 lbs, and the bales of straw I use in their pen weigh over 20 lbs — all of which must be moved from the back of my car to the shed in the backyard," she says.

8. Birding

Novice and veteran ornithologists (and just regular Joes who like watching birds) will reap the benefits of birding through improved cardiovascular health. Bird watchers sometimes walk many miles in search of their flighty subjects. You'll gain increased upper arm strength by holding binoculars and cameras for an extended period, and quick reflexes.

This article is from Mikey Rox of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. We also know that we can save a ton of money at the grocery store if we grow our own herbs, fruits, and vegetables. But what other benefits are there to gardening, beyond eating what you grow? Here are six surprising reasons to get out into the dirt and perfect your green thumb. (See also: 13 Simple Gardening Skills Anybody Can Master)

1. Fight depression

Gardening may be the key thing to lifting your spirits and battling depression. According to Psychology Today, tending plants can give you a sense of responsibility, provide you with something to nurture, keep you connected to other living things, and help you relax. What's more, when you exercise by working in the garden, your endorphins rise and your stress levels fall.

2. Cut your risk of Alzheimer's disease

In a study released by the Journal of Alzheimer's disease in 2016, researchers found that your risk of Alzheimer's could be reduced by various physical activities. The study measured the changes in the brain using MRI scans in correlation to increased exercise. It concluded that even low-intensity activities such as walking improved cognitive function by increasing gray matter in the brain. So even though gardening might not be as strenuous as attending a kickboxing class at the gym, this activity will help safeguard your brain as you age.

3. A chance to socialize

Have you been feeling a little lonesome? Explore getting a plot in a community garden. There, you can happily toil along with others as you maintain your growing fruits and veggies. You can also exchange produce, compare techniques, and swap seeds.

Those interactions have real health benefits. Researchers at Brigham Young University who analyzed existing studies found that while loneliness is associated with early death as much as obesity, socializing with others can help you live longer. So even on days when you're not up for small talk, head to the community garden and you might just add years to your life.

4. Soak up some vitamin D

Does your doctor think you are getting enough vitamin D? If not, remember that regular sun exposure will provide vitamin D — which regulates your calcium levels and helps you maintain healthy bones and teeth. Be sure to use sunscreen, of course, but soak up those rays when you can.

5. Meditate

For a long time, I watched my neighbor, May, squat and pull weeds from her lawn. Why didn't she use a chemical to do the work for her, I wondered. As it turns out, it's meditative. She enjoys the birds, the sunrise, and the satisfaction of getting rid of weeds. She finds it therapeutic to work repetitively, one weed at a time.

6. Absorb some healthy bacteria

Mycobacterium vaccae is the scientific name for a healthy bacteria that naturally lives in soil. Amazingly, it has been found to trigger the release of serotonin in humans and mice, and that can elevate your mood and decrease anxiety. How cool is that?

More studies are being done to determine how effective M. vaccae is at treating mental health disorders via pill, vaccination, or inhalation, but until you can purchase this in the vitamin section of your local grocery store, you might be able to soak up the benefits by getting your hands dirty in the garden.

This article is from Marla Walters of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. But forget making drastic personality changes, devoting hours of extra time to sweating at the gym, or forking over loads of cash. Sometimes the most dramatic lifestyle shifts are the result of tiny decisions we make every day. Here are 11 little lifestyle changes that'll get your whole life fit for summer — and the rest of the year, too.

1. Clean your cell phone daily

I hate to gross you out, but that phone in your pocket is literally teeming with germs. Various studies have found E. coli, MRSA, Streptococcus, and many other pathogens living on mobile phones. Keep yourself healthy by wiping down your phone thoroughly each day with a dry microfiber cloth. Disinfect it weekly using a microfiber cloth dampened with diluted isopropyl alcohol.

2. Switch to a moisturizer with sunscreen

Even on an overcast day, the sun can damage skin. Using moisturizer with SPF 30 or greater can shield your skin from harmful UV rays, slow the development of wrinkles, minimize redness, and reduce the risk of skin cancer — all without adding another step to your morning routine.

3. Cut out soda

A 12-ounce can of regular soda contains roughly nine teaspoons of sugar (about the same amount as 2.5 scoops of ice cream). Just this single dietary change will help you maintain a healthy weight, reduce your risk of developing type-2 diabetes, and minimize dental problems. (See also: 7 Soda Alternatives That Won't Bust Your Wallet — Or Your Waistline)

4. Socialize

Humans are social animals. Spending time with close friends improves your mood, increases self-confidence, and helps you navigate life's ups and downs. Instead of relying on random get-togethers, make a weekly date to spend quality time with those you care about most. If it won't ruffle any feathers, suggest these events be screen-free and revel in the old-fashioned art of conversation.

5. Make your bed

It may seem trivial, but making your bed first thing in the morning sets a positive and productive tone for the rest of the day (hospital corners optional).

6. Floss

According to many dentists, flossing is more important than brushing. Because floss is designed to clean between teeth and between the teeth and gums, it's a more effective tool for fighting tooth decay and periodontal disease. Make flossing at least once a day part of your routine. (See also: The 5 Best Flosses)

7. Move

Sitting is the new smoking, and we're all doing way too much of it. Walk the dog, take the stairs, mow the lawn with a push mower, schedule an outdoor work meeting and go for stroll — just try anything that will get you moving more each day.

8. Sleep more … and better

The busier we are, the more quality sleep matters. Invest in a few things that will transform your bedroom into a sleep-inducing oasis: Consider blackout shades, a white noise machine, quality linens, and comfortable pillows. If a new mattress isn't in your budget, add a memory foam or pillow-top mattress pad.

Once your sanctuary is set, fit more naps into your life. A 20- or 30-minute catnap can improve alertness and mood without disrupting your nighttime sleep schedule.

9. Don't check email before bed

While we're on the topic of good sleep, resist checking your email right before bed. Trust me, nothing good can come from it. Inevitably, there'll be a message that gets your mind buzzing or makes you anxious about the coming workday. Establish a media cut-off time and stick to it.

10. Adopt a one-item-in, one-item-out policy for your home

Cluttered spaces can be overwhelming, difficult to clean, and bad for your mental health. Become a zero-accumulation household by following one simple rule: For every new item you bring into your home, donate or sell an item of similar size. Already drowning under a pile of junk? Purge three or four items for every new one you add.

11. Save an extra five percent of your net income

Saving money is empowering. Properly managed, a healthy nest egg can help you fund a new career, start a family, or become a homeowner. Push yourself to save an extra five percent of your net income. Buy generic, cut the cord on cable TV, or explore ways to lower your cell phone bill. In short, do whatever it takes to beef up your bank account. Your future self will thank you.

This article is from Kentin Waits of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. But when you're trying lots of new, exotic foods and taking a break from your normal routine, it can also end up being an unplanned departure from healthy habits.

Given that extra weight is one souvenir you may not have been planning to take home with you after your trip, here are some easy tips to help incorporate healthy living habits, wherever your travels take you.

1. Count steps

Simply being aware of how active (or inactive) you are while you're away from home is a good way to make sure that you're staying on a healthy track. One way to do this is by counting how many steps you take a day, using either a pedometer or a fitness tracker such as a Fitbit.

Start by establishing a baseline for how much you tend to walk when you're home. Then when you're away you can check in to see if you're walking less or more. Walking can be a great way to see a new place, and can save you money on cabs.

If you see that you haven't reached your daily goal, go for an extra evening walk to check out the local sunset or events around town.

2. Keep track of activities with apps

Besides steps, a good fitness tracker can keep track of other activities you do, too. You can log all kinds of activities, from cycling to rock climbing. You can also monitor your heart rate and sleeping hours.

I personally have been traveling for over a year with the Withings Activité Pop. You can use it to track all kinds of activities. It's waterproof, and I like the convenience of wearing it while I'm swimming and showering. Also, it uses a watch battery that lasts for around eight months, so you never have to worry about charging it. (See also: 6 Apps That Pay You to Work Out)

3. Set goals and stay accountable

Before you leave for your trip, it can be helpful to set a fitness or health-related goal for your trip, whether it's walking a certain amount of steps a day, going to the gym, or getting runs in during the week.

After you've decided what you're going to achieve while you're away, tell a friend, family member, or travel companion what your plan is so that you can establish accountability. Maybe your travel companion will be on board and you'll end up with an exercise buddy.

Having a supportive and active network can be an amazingly effective way to stay fit while you're traveling. When I go home from a long trip, my mom always finds a race that we can run together. It's great motivation to train and stay active while I'm on the road.

Even when friends or family are far away, fitness trackers often let you compare steps with other people in your network, which can spark some healthy competition to see who gets in the most steps.

4. Bring healthy snacks

You never know if you'll be stuck somewhere for a while, and end up grabbing whatever junk food is nearby. Pack a healthy snack or meal that you can carry with you. Fruits and vegetables are an easy option, since they require little to no preparation. Dried fruit and nuts are another filling option that won't get squashed in your bag. (See also: Eat These 6 Foods to Stay Healthy While Traveling)

5. Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated is important whether you're home or away. Pack a water bottle for your trip, so you can drink throughout the day. Plus, staying hydrated can help prevent fatigue, keeping your body primed for whenever you want to get active.

Some travelers underestimate the power of tropical heat and desert sun, and become dehydrated during their vacation. Drink lots of water to prevent any illnesses caused by a lack of fluid in the body.

6. Eat fresh, local cuisine

Eating food that is in season and local is not only delicious, it is also good for your health. It benefits the economic health of the place you are visiting, too, since you are supporting local farmers.

Food that is grown nearby will be fresher and may be packed with more nutrients than food that has had to travel halfway around the world to arrive at your destination. Plus, this is a great way to try out local specialties. (See also: How to Eat Great Food for Cheap While Traveling)

7. Try adventure travel

Putting adventure sports and activities on your itinerary is another way to guarantee that you'll make time to be physically active during your stay. While some vacations such as ski trips or multiday cycling adventures revolve entirely around an activity, you can also do active travel in a way that doesn't have to take over the entire trip.

If you're going to a beach vacation, balance your time lounging on the white sand with some kayaking, windsurfing, or scuba diving. Opt to walk when you can, or rent a bicycle to tour the city. At a minimum, pack a swimsuit so you can do a few laps in the hotel pool

8. Don't take the elevator

This final trick is as simple as it is effective. Stair climbing burns twice the calories of walking, according to Harvard Medical School, and it engages all kinds of other muscles while benefiting your heart and lungs. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator is an easy change to make, and you can do it anywhere.

Like this article? As Garth Algar once said in Wayne's World, "we fear change." And that's natural. The unknown can present risks. It can pose a threat. Change can also be hard, whereas maintaining the status quo is easy. But hard lifestyle changes — like the 10 that follow — will always lead to a much better life for you. And best of all, they will cost you absolutely nothing.

1. Decluttering and Organizing

Whether it's the garage, the junk drawer, the closet, the kitchen, the basement, the attic, or all of the above, it's a task most of us put off. And keep putting off. The problem with decluttering and organizing is that things always look worse before they look better. If you pull everything out of that junk drawer, you've got a real mess on your hands. It's far easier to just close it and forget about it. But whatever is a mess at home, or at work, you need to attack it with vigor. Not only will you find things you thought were lost forever, you'll also free up space and feel better. And it will stop you from buying things over and over, because you can never find them. Chapstick, anyone? (See also: 12 Ways a Deep Declutter Will Improve Your Live)

2. Eating Well

It's hard to eat healthy, especially in this country. You can go to McDonald's right now and get two cheeseburgers, fries, and a soda for less than $5. It's filling, and it's tasty. Finding a healthy, filling, and convenient alternative for the same price — now that's a challenge. But we are what we eat, and study after study tells us that junk food and a lack of fruit and vegetables in our diet is making us all more susceptible to illness and disease. Limit fast food, eat smaller portions, and substitute unhealthy snacks for things like low-sugar granola bars, nuts, and fruits. (See also: 8 Ways to Save on Dinner — No Meal Planning Required)

3. Drinking More Water

Ricky Gervais has said that he hates drinking water "because it's boring." Many people feel the same way. Water is not the delight to the taste buds that coffee, soda, or a glass of chilled white wine is. But we need water. Many of us are actually dehydrated and we don't even realize it.

So, pledge to drink a little more water each day. Make it a habit. Add ice and a slice of lemon or lime. Have it with every meal, alongside a drink you find tastier. If it's there, you'll most likely drink some of it. It can make a huge difference to your health. (See also: 10 Tricks to Get You Drinking More Water)

4. Looking on the Bright Side

They say stress is one of the biggest killers in the world today. Stress can have a major negative impact on your blood pressure, your heart, your body, and your mood. It can lead to depression, and substance abuse. And many times, it can be alleviated by simply refusing to look for the worst possible outcome in every situation. It can be easy to dismiss people who are constantly cheery, but they really do have the advantage. While preparing for the worst can be a good idea, dwelling on it is not going to do you any favors. Don't worry about things out of your control. Don't focus on the negatives. Find ways to be thankful for the best things that happen to you every day.

5. Avoiding Gossip

Gossip can be toxic in any environment, either at work, at home, or in a circle of friends. Gossip can ruin people's lives, and can spread small falsehoods that grow into major incidents. But, gossip is fun. When someone calls you over to the water cooler surreptitiously, and says, "Hey, did you hear about John…," you naturally move in closer and get involved. It's rare that anything positive comes from a scenario like this, and you can be hurt by it, too. Just back out of these gossip sessions, and concentrate on facts and reality.

6. Exercising More

You do not need a gym membership. You do not need fancy workout clothes. You don't even need the best sneakers, although it's wise to get a pair that support your feet well. What you do need are determination and commitment. You should be getting at least 30 minutes of exercise every day, and while that is tough for most of us to achieve, it can be done. It doesn't have to be an intense workout with weights and treadmills. Walking up and down the stairs at home for 30 minutes can get your heart rate up and make you sweat. Push-ups, situps, and a jog around the block all cost nothing. Start with a few times a week, and then add a day here, and a day there. You'll be amazed at the results.

7. Finding Your Purpose

You sometimes hear people say, "I really want to find myself," and it's not easy to understand what they want, or what they mean. What is your purpose in life? What do you love doing? Why are you here, and what kind of difference are you making? This is not a call to change the world, cure cancer, or overthrow a dictator. It can be small. It can mean you focus on your family and raising your amazing children. It can be creating a wonderful garden that you tend to daily. It can be painting, or playing guitar, or working with wood. It's your purpose. Once you find it, you can feel really fulfilled every day.

8. Reading More

There are so many distractions in everyday life: exciting, visual, interactive, and engaging distractions. In comparison, picking up a book can be hard work. It's not as much fun as watching a movie in 4K, or playing an immersive video game. However, reading is important. It stimulates your brain in ways that those other distractions cannot. Your imagination can build worlds from those words you read that blow any special effects visual out of the water. And remember, your local library has thousands of books, fiction and nonfiction, that are there for you for free.

9. Meditating

Meditation is not just for new-age hippies and yoga addicts. Meditation is something many people do, including celebrities like Katy Perry, Madonna, Hugh Jackman, Clint Eastwood, Eva Mendes, and Nicole Kidman. Our busy lives make it hard to find time to sit in silence and "get into ourselves," but it can have an incredible, transformational effect on your life. In the beginning, it can be difficult to train your mind, but over time, it can really pay off.

10. Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone

Routines are very comforting to us. They are also ruts that are very easy to get stuck in, and we may not even recognize them as such. If you spend every Friday evening at home with a movie and a bottle of wine, that becomes habit. A routine. It's nice. But when people ask you to go to a comedy club, or take dance classes, or even go hiking, it's way easier to say no than yes. But "yes" can lead to some incredible life experiences.

If you're too afraid to approach someone in a bar, get over it. Move out of your comfort zone of smiling and looking coy, and actually say hi. Who knows where it may lead. Sure, it's not as comfortable. But it can also be exciting, maybe even scary, and that really gets your heart pumping. Who knows… you may even have fun!

This article is from Paul Michael of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Unfortunately, it's also one of the most broken resolutions as well. Perhaps if there was more of a financial reward tied to getting in shape, it would be easier, or maybe if there was a way to stay more accountable. Fortunately, there exist some highly clever smartphone apps that will help you with both. Here are six of the most popular apps that will actually pay you to workout and help keep you accountable in the process.

1. PACT

The free PACT app is a clever healthy living smartphone app that keeps you accountable, both in terms of diet and exercise. The app works by allowing you to make weekly "pacts" with yourself to either eat healthier or exercise more.

Once your pacts are set, you choose how much money you'll pay other PACT members if you don't reach them. On the flipside, if you do reach your pacts, you get paid by other members. So essentially you make money by staying healthy and you get paid by the members who don't. You might only make a few dollars a week, but the app keeps you accountable and makes for easy goal setting. Plus, it lets you connect to other popular health apps like RunKeeper, Fitbit, MapMyRun, and MyFitnessPal.

2. DietBet

The DietBet app is a fun way to track your weight loss goals, stay accountable, and tap into your competitive side. Essentially the app let's you join "Games," pay a small entry fee, and compete against other motivated folks to try and lose a certain percentage of weight in a specific amount of time. Win the game and you'll split the pot with all the other winners.

3. Healthy Wage

The Healthy Wage app is similar to DietBet, with a couple important differences. While you get paid by winning weight loss challenges, the app focuses more on the user creating challenges with friends and family as well as corporate challenges. The challenges make for a fun way to track your progress and interact with others who are also trying to develop a healthier lifestyle.

You can join up to 10 challenges at one time, as well as simply create personal challenges that'll keep you accountable. You pony up some money, join the challenges that interest you, and try to win some substantial bucks. Refer friends to the challenge and your winnings grow substantially.

4. Charity Miles

If you're looking to get into shape and are the type who regularly gives money to your favorite charities, then the Charity Miles app is worth a look. The app essentially donates money to the charity of your choice any time you "walk, run, bike, skip, dance or any human-centered activity." By using your smartphone's GPS, Charity Miles can easily track your movement and track your activity. The more you move, the more money your charity receives.

Sound too good to be true? Charity Miles is completely legit and pays out via corporate sponsors like Humana, Johnson & Johnson, and Chobani.

5. WellCoin

The folks at WellCoin have developed a mobile app that gives you rewards points for doing healthy things. From sleeping seven hours a night, to drinking plenty of water, to going for a jog, you'll earn WellCoins for doing all of the above. Earn enough coins and you can redeem them for workout gear, healthy food, and even exercise classes in your area. The app is a great tool to help keep you accountable throughout the day.

6. FitCoin

The FitCoin app is another fun way to earn rewards with your Fitbit or any fitness tracker supported by the Apple Health app on your iPhone. Once the app is synced to your fitness tracker, you simply start burning calories by walking, jogging, or hitting the gym, and start earning "FitCoins" for your efforts. Your burned calories turn into FitCoins which can be redeemed in the FitCoin boutique for cool stuff like Amazon gift cards.

This article is from Kyle James of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. According to research by a University of Scranton, Journal of Clinical Psychology study, only 8% of people who make New Year's resolutions actually achieve their goals. If you're like most people, your plans to go to the gym four times a week, stop wasting time on Facebook, and organize your entire home are probably going to fizzle before the end of January.

But there is someone in your life who can help you create achievable New Year's resolutions: your pet. What Fido and Fluffy want from you in 2017 are actually things that will help to make your life better. So forget the usual resolutions this year, and make some resolutions that will make your pet (and you!) happy:

1. Go On a Daily 30-Minute Walk

You know that Rover loves going on walks with you, but some days, it's all you can do to walk him around the block to his favorite fire hydrant. Especially in the winter, it can be very easy to hustle through a quick walk in the cold and head back inside to your laptop and Netflix.

But your pooch loves the daily exercise and stimulation that a long walk can offer — even in cold weather — and he's not able to understand your enthusiasm for binge-watching The Crown. A nice long walk is just what he wants, even when you want to curl up with a hot chocolate.

Of course, a daily 30-minute walk is literally just what the doctor ordered for you, too. Not only does a daily walk help you maintain (or lose) weight, but such moderate exercise helps to prevent and reduce the severity of chronic diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes. In addition, the exercise and the time outside can both help to improve your mood.

Rather than making a resolution to become a gym rat — and plunking down the gym's hefty joiner's fee and monthly membership fee — resolve to take Rover for a long walk every day, no matter the weather. You'll both be happier for it.

2. Take More Naps

Mittens may act aloof, but there is something she wishes you'd do more of: nap with her. Cats are notorious nappers (and cuddlers), and there is nothing more satisfying than taking a snooze with a purring kitty perched on your belly.

Of course, such naps are going to do more than just make your cat happy. They will also improve your health, your mood, and your level of self-control. According to a 2011 study by the Center for Disease Control, an estimated 50 to 70 million Americans are suffering from sleep deprivation. And being sleep deprived means that you are more vulnerable to chronic illnesses and more irritable, not to mention too mentally exhausted to avoid procrastination.

So this year, commit to curling up with your cat and catching 40 winks a couple of times a week. She'll love the closeness, and you'll reap the benefits of being well-rested.

3. Do Less

Having a full social calendar can be tough on your pets. They miss you terribly when you go out in the evening, especially if you are already working long hours. They would love nothing more than to have you home and available for tug-of-war, fetch, or belly rubs most nights.

It turns out that having a wall-to-wall schedule of events in your life isn't so great for you, either. According to Eldar Shafir and Sendhil Mullainathan, authors of the book Scarcity: The New Science of Having Less and How It Defines Our Lives, you're likely to make bad decisions if you have too little free time. Here's why: Managing your time is something like packing a suitcase. If you have an empty suitcase (or an empty schedule), it's easy to add something new. But if your suitcase or schedule is full, then you have to decide what to remove in order to add a new commitment, and that can be stressful.

The commitments that are most likely to come out of the "time suitcase" are the ones that don't feel urgent — like your commitment to spend time with your pets. But not only does spending time with your four-footed friends make them happier, it is also a great way to relieve your own stress. It is well documented that interaction with animals reduces tension and improves mood.

That's not to say that you should completely clear your social calendar so you can spend every moment with Buddy and Boots. But if you resolve to do less in 2017, you can take the time to determine whether you really want to say yes to the invitations that come your way. Then you'll only agree to the ones that you really want to do — and make yourself and your pets happier.

4. Clean More

Bandit can't get on his favorite spot on the sofa because the laundry basket is in the way. Cleo's litter box has gotten so ripe she's leaving "gifts" on the floor beside it. They may not be able to tell you in words (although your cat's method of protest can be pretty eloquent), but your pets would love it if your house were a little cleaner.

Tidying up would also offer a big benefit to you. According to Sherrie Bourg Carter, writing for Psychology Today, "Messy homes and work spaces leave us feeling anxious, helpless, and overwhelmed." Those piles of clothes and papers overwhelm our senses and make it difficult to truly relax. That can affect everything from your mood to your ability to sleep well at night.

Getting on a cleaning routine this year will not only help your pets to feel comfortable in your home, but it will help you feel better, too. And knowing that you can have unexpected guests drop by without worrying about the pet hair tumbleweed in the living room or the freshness of the litter box is an incredibly freeing sensation.

Listen to Your Pets

Resolutions are often grand promises to ourselves, but making small promises to our pets will actually lead to a better, healthier, and happier year. For 2017, resolve to get more purring and tail wagging from your pets, and you'll also reap the rewards for yourself.

This article is from Emily Guy Birken of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. When work is overwhelming, you are fighting with your parents, and the news seems to get grimmer every day, you might find yourself shopping your way into a better mood or pulling the covers over your head and ignoring all of your responsibilities.

Stress, anxiety, and depression affect all of us at some time or another. And whether you are dealing with occasional and momentary periods of stress, or you are in the grips of a long-term and serious depressive episode, your mental state can often wreak havoc on your finances. It's not easy to protect your budget from your anxiety's destructive impulses, but the following types of self-care will not only help you to feel better when stress strikes, but they will also protect your bottom line.

1. Recruit an Accountability Partner

Accountability partners are an important strategy for improving your finances. Not only does having a partner motivate you to stay on the straight-and-narrow while you pay down debt or increase your savings, but working with someone else can offer you encouragement when you are feeling down and add some fun to a long process.

All of these benefits are also crucial if you are trying to keep your budget looking healthy while you're dealing with stress, anxiety, or depression. In the case of trying to keep your mental state from hurting your finances, your accountability partner may act a little bit more like a sponsor from a 12-step program. You can call that person when you are overwhelmed and count on her to remind you of why a shopping binge will not actually help you feel better.

Obviously, you and your accountability partner need to be able to offer each other the emotional support you both need. In times of widespread anxiety, it can be a little more difficult to find a partner when everyone is feeling overwhelmed. However, leaning on each other is often a great way for two friends to both feel better and make the best financial choices for themselves.

2. Meditate

Mindfulness meditation has been proven to alleviate the symptoms of both anxiety and depression. The focus of such meditation is to train your brain to remain in the moment, rather than obsess over the past or worry about the future. Such mindfulness will not only help you to put worries in perspective, but it can also help you to recognize the link between your emotions and your financially-destructive behavior.

For instance, let's say that after a day of bingeing on news online, you badly want to put a lavish vacation on credit, just so you have something to look forward to. If you take 10 minutes to meditate instead, it can help you to see that your anxiety will not be helped by a vacation you can't afford. It will also allow you to feel your anxiety, rather than push it away, which is a much more productive method of getting past the negative feelings.

If you have never meditated before, there are many beginner's guides out there to teach you the practice of mindfulness.

3. Go for a Run

Exercise is the closest thing we have to a no-fail antidepressant. Research has shown that people are happier after breaking a sweat than they were beforehand, even if they had to force themselves to go to the gym.

In addition, an exercise habit can help you to avoid budget-destroying habits you might otherwise engage in, like retail therapy or a weekend-long Netflix marathon that keeps you from taking care of your grocery shopping and laundry.

Of course, when you are in the midst of a deep funk, the idea of lacing up your sneakers and going out for a life-affirming run sounds about as enticing as getting a root canal. This is another place where your accountability partner can help you do what's best for you both. Set up a regular date to exercise together, and you will both get to enjoy the endorphins and the good company.

4. Volunteer

Depression, anxiety, and stress are often side effects of feeling helpless. When it feels as if you have little power over your circumstances, it's easy to retreat into bad and expensive habits to help yourself feel better.

But there is always meaningful work that we can do to improve lives — even if we can't improve our own. That is why volunteering for a cause you believe in can be such an important tool in improving your outlook on the world. According to a 2008 study by the London School of Economics, people who volunteer experience greater happiness than those who do not.

The researchers theorize that volunteering makes you happier because it helps to put your situation in perspective. In addition, volunteering your time helps alleviate depression because it allows you to feel like you are a part of something important that is doing good in the world.

5. Engage in Productive Self-Care

Sometimes things feel so bleak that you really do need to retreat and take care of yourself. There is nothing wrong an occasional "Stop the world, I want to get off!" day for yourself. But there can be a fine line between healthy and productive self-care, and self-destructive wallowing. For instance, buying a bottle of nail polish might make you feel good, which could prompt you to keep buying to keep that good feeling going. Instead, you might be better served by inviting a friend over to paint your nails together.

To make sure your self-care is helpful rather than harmful, start with your needs. Ask yourself what needs are not being met right now, and listen carefully to the answer that bubbles to the surface. Wallowing is often a passive reaction, whereas productive self-care is when you engage in fulfilling your unmet needs. Taking the time to think through what you need may help you realize that you don't actually want to go out drinking, but instead you need to talk with a good friend.

Don't Let Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Hurt Your Finances

When your thoughts get stuck in a hamster wheel of anxiety or depression, the easy method of handling your distress can often cause you financial stress. Being intentional and mindful about how you handle your negative mental states can help to alleviate your feelings of helplessness and keep your finances healthy.

If you are experiencing severe depression and/or suicidal thoughts, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

This article is from Emily Guy Birken of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Despite the problems we face, most of us would give anything to maximize longevity. Fortunately, there's plenty you can do to have a long, fulfilling life. Some things are fairly obvious, such as quitting a bad habit like smoking, and avoiding life-threatening behaviors. What you might not realize, however, is that certain purchases also have a hand in extending your lifespan. Here are eight things you can buy to help you live longer.

1. Books

After finishing high school or college, maybe you vowed never to pick up another book again. Reading was no doubt a grueling chore while you were cramming for an exam, but there are benefits to making reading a regular routine. According to a new study, reading can boost cognitive function, and people who read for at least 30 minutes a day can extend their lives and live two years longer than those who don't read.

2. A Cat

If you're thinking about getting a pet, don't automatically assume a dog is the better choice. Some cats aren't as social or playful as dogs. Nonetheless, owning a cat can be good for your heart and have a positive effect on your life. The National Health and Nutrition Examination study followed 4,500 men and women over a 20-year period. More than half of the participants owned a cat during their lives. The study found that people who never had a cat were 30% more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than those who had owned a cat.

3. Floss

Brushing your teeth at least two times a day contributes to oral health. But if you're looking to add years to your life, don't forget to floss. The American Dental Association recommends daily flossing, and for good reason. Flossing — which helps remove particles of food from places a toothbrush can't reach — can add as much as six years to your life. The benefits of flossing have recently been hotly debated, but not flossing increases the risk of gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). Gingivitis can lead to heart disease, stroke, and infection.

4. Sunscreen

Whether you're at the beach, an amusement park, driving in the car, or working in your garden, it's important to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays with sunscreen. Sunshine is an excellent source of vitamin D, but too much exposure can be deadly. Having more than five sunburns can double your risk for melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Therefore, always apply sunscreen before exposing your skin to the sun, and reapply as directed.

5. Coffee

You don't have to feel guilty about starting your morning with a cup of Joe. Coffee can provide a much-needed energy boost to get through the day, and it can help you live longer. Researchers found that coffee has antioxidants that protect our bodies from damage. The beverage can reduce the risk of cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and type 2 diabetes. But it's important to drink in moderation. Too much caffeine also increases blood pressure and can cause sleep problems.

6. Bike

One or more days a week, ride your bike to work or while running errands. And if you have a regular exercise routine, incorporate cycling a few days a week. Researchers have found a link between riding a bike and living longer. For every hour you bike, you can add one hour to your life.

7. Blood Pressure Monitor

You probably don't give your blood pressure a second thought — but you should. High blood pressure is a silent killer because it increases the risk of stroke and heart disease. Rather than wait for a health crisis to learn you have high blood pressure, invest in a blood pressure monitor and regularly check your levels to ensure they remain within a healthy range (less than 120/80 mm Hg).

Blood pressure can fluctuate throughout the day, and you may have higher than normal readings after exercising or eating. If your numbers are consistently high, talk to your doctor. With lifestyle changes or medication you can lower your blood pressure and reduce the risk of early death.

8. A Wedding Ring

Maybe you're happy living a bachelor or bachelorette life. Even so, there are benefits to tying the knot. Not only can you enjoy companionship, a study conducted by Duke University Medical Center found that people who never marry were "more than twice as likely to die early in life than those people in long-term, stable relationships." The study followed 4,800 people born in the 1940s. These findings support other studies, which found that married people had a lower risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer.

Like this article? Making your bicycle your best friend may be the smartest move you can make to save money, burn calories, and generally improve your life.

If you're searching for a reason to pull the trigger on the all-bike lifestyle, consider these nine ways that life is an amazing when you eschew the car. (See also: 5 Best Cities for Going Car-Free)

1. You'll Save Money on Gas

Okay, so let's say you have a 30-mile roundtrip commute. And let's say you're spending $2.25 per gallon on gasoline. If you get 30 miles per gallon on your car, you're spending about $2.25 a day on gasoline. That's $11.25 a week, or more than $500 per year. Ditch your car, and that's money back in your pocket. And best of all, when gas prices spike, your commuting expenses will stay the same.

2. You'll Save Money on Insurance

No car means nothing to insure. And this means money saved. The average cost to insure even a basic sedan was $1,222 per year in 2015, according to AAA. That's a significant chunk of change back in your pocket.

3. You'll Save Money on Maintenance

A bike might need some repairs and a tuneup now and then, but the cost of this work is nothing compared to a car. AAA reports that the average driver spends $792 annually on car maintenance. Add that to the cost of gas and insurance, and you can see the thousands of dollars saved by ditching the car and going for the bike.

4. You'll See More

Whenever I ride my bike, I always end up noticing new things about my surroundings. It might be a new small business in my town, renovations to an old home, or a park in need of some cleanup. It's a rather nice feeling to see your environment unfurl itself in front of you as you ride. It's so much easier to see what's around you when you're not enclosed inside a vehicle.

5. You'll Shop More Locally

One downside to riding a bike everywhere is that you obviously can't haul a lot of stuff. This means no long trips to the Super Walmart for groceries. But, it also means that the shopping you do will be done locally, possibly to the benefit of smaller, independent stores. Proponents of the Shop Local movement claim that if you spend $100 at local small stores, $68 will stay in your community, compared to $43 for big chains.

6. Exercise!

There's no question that cycling is great for your health. According to an online calculator from bicycling.com, a one-hour bike ride at a moderate pace can lead to more than 500 calories burned, or even 1,000 if you really push the pace. Biking will help you build leg muscles, but is also good for the back and abdomen. And it's generally seen as lower impact than running. One study even suggested that women who bike to work weresignificantly less likely to fracture their wrists.

7. You'll Look Forward to Going to Work

Who gets excited about sitting in a car in traffic, or stuffing yourself onto a crowded subway car? By incorporating a bike into your commute, you're incorporating an enjoyable activity into your daily drudgery.

8. Your Employer Might Pay You

Good employers want their workers to be healthy, so many will incentivize bike commuting by offering cash back as a fringe benefit. The IRS allows employers to reimburse bicycle commuters up to $20 per month for bike-related expenses, such as storage, repairs, a helmet, or the purchase of a bike itself.

9. You Save Time

You might assume that biking will take longer than driving. But this isn't always the case, research shows. Kiplinger reported that half of the commuting population in the U.S. travels five miles or less to work, and that riding a bike that distance can often be faster than driving. As a cyclist, you have access to trails, bike lanes, and side roads that will allow you to avoid drivers and traffic jams.

Have you traded in your car for a bike? I enjoy cheap or free pastimes, and even some pastimes that make money. Here are some inexpensive pastimes that you can enjoy to stay blissfully preoccupied without spending much money.

Exercise

The payoffs for regular exercise are immense, not least is the relaxation.

1. Bicycling

Bicycling can be a very inexpensive hobby. I picked up a cheap used bike for $28, rode it for five years, and then sold it for $35! In addition to a bike, there are a few other things you’ll need to get started: a bike helmet and a bike lock to keep yourself and your bike safe. If you buy an older bike, you may need to change the tires and inner tubes, but you can do this yourself for only a few dollars. A cheap bike provides transportation, exercise, and entertainment.

2. Walking

Even if you don’t have any money at all, you can still enjoy walking. Walking is a convenient way to spend time outside and enjoy the seasons with no special equipment or planning required. When the weather is bad, I enjoy walking indoors in shopping malls.

3. Hiking

Sometimes I like to go to go hiking in a park or trail away from roads and sidewalks. Hiking takes a bit more effort than simply going for a walk near your home or workplace, but provides more opportunities to get close to nature. Most hiking trips are free, but I recently paid $10 to go for a five-hour hike among the redwoods in Muir Woods National Monument while visiting San Francisco. This was the most entertainment I have ever gotten for $10!

Cerebral Activities

After you've worked your muscles, challenge your noodle.

4. Reading

Reading can be free if you get books at a public library or find free classics to read on your electronic devices via sites such as Project Gutenberg. It seems like there is a nearly endless supply of new books coming along, plus the old classics to catch up on.

5. Writing

Writing has been a great pastime for me. It is exciting to see my work published, and I have even been able to make some money along the way from writing books, articles, and through advertising on my blog. If you are not ready to publish your work for the world to see, writing a journal for yourself or stories to share with your friends and family is a great way to get started writing.

6. Crossword Puzzles

Crossword puzzles help keep your mind sharp and some people seem to really enjoy doing them. I have tried doing crossword puzzles a few times, but it is too much like doing a homework assignment for me to enjoy. Maybe I need to find some easier crossword puzzles to build up my skills.

7. Brain Games

I have tried brain games on my computer, such as the free trial version of Lumosity, and I sometimes play Math Blaster on my Android device. There are all kinds of free brain games that exercise your skills and help you stay sharp as you try to beat your high score. Some games even allow you to compare your scores with others.

8. Educational Videos

You no longer need to wait until Sunday evening for NOVA to come on PBS. You can get a wide selection of educational programs any time on Netflix ($8 per month) or YouTube (free). I like to find TED Talks on YouTube to find interesting perspectives on everything from physics to social sciences.

9. Online Courses

There are all kinds of online courses you can take for free, including subjects such as computer programming, statistics, and science. Here are some places to check for online courses that interest you:

MIT OpenCourseWare

Coursera

Open Culture

Khan Academy

10. Jigsaw Puzzles

Some people get excited about doing jigsaw puzzles and like to receive them as gifts. Jigsaw puzzles can provide many hours of entertainment for not much money, and you do get a sense of satisfaction — or relief — when the puzzle is complete. You can pick up used jigsaw puzzles at garage sales for a dollar or two that provide hours of entertainment, but you might find out that there are missing pieces.

11. Ancestry Research/Genealogy

You can make a serious hobby out of researching your ancestry. It is easier than ever to research family history and find links to your family’s past. You can get a long way without spending much money and produce research on your family history that will be invaluable to future generations.

12. Learn a Foreign Language

When you learn a foreign language, you learn more than just a bunch of foreign words. You learn about another culture and open up opportunities to meet and learn about new people.

Nature/Outdoor Enjoyment

When you tire of puzzles and brain games, re-connect with nature.

13. Camping

Camping can be a great way to get away and see things from a fresh perspective. You can find places to camp for free, but even if you pay to stay in a campground, you can find places to pitch a tent for around $20 per night.

14. Fishing

Basic fishing equipment doesn’t cost a lot of money. You can get an inexpensive rod and reel good enough to catch your dinner for around $25. I still have a lot of the same fishing tackle I used when I was growing up. The price of a seasonal fishing license varies by location. I paid about $20 and was able to go fishing whenever I wanted all summer.

15. Bird-watching

It is hard not to watch the birds at my house. I have seen orioles, blue jays, cardinals, robins, hummingbirds, geese, and even bald eagles. I put out bird feeders to attract birds near my house for easy observation. Even if you don’t put out bird feeders, you can probably find interesting birds to watch and enjoy. Binoculars are useful to be able to observe birds high in trees or too far away to see easily.

Food-Related

While you don't want to use food as a coping tool, lots of the activities around food prep are satisfying and relaxing.

16. Gardening

You get to enjoy planning your garden, watching it grow, and then harvest lots of free vegetables. Gardening can be very inexpensive if you start your own seeds and make your own compost to use for fertilizer. Even if you don’t have a yard, you can grow vegetables in pots on a patio or deck. If you don’t want to rototill a traditional garden, you can grow vegetables in straw bales or build raised beds for easy access.

17. Cooking

Cooking is a great pastime since it reduces the probability that you will spend money on expensive restaurant food. Watch some cooking shows or videos to learn cooking techniques and get ideas for recipes you want to try out. You can get started cooking with only a few pans and utensils.

18. Canning Food

If you have a successful garden, you’ll need to do something with all of those vegetables. The first thing I remember canning was salsa we made with tomatoes, onions, peppers, and cilantro we grew in the garden. It was messy and a lot of work, but it was fun to make those cans of salsa to save for winter and to give to friends. If you have a freezer, you can use an inexpensive vacuum sealer to pull the air out of plastic bags and seal up your produce to freeze without getting freezer burned.

19. Grilling

You can start grilling with a $20 charcoal grill. If $20 is too much for you, you can even make a grill for free! My kids build a kebab pit for free using concrete blocks they found and it works great. I also have a gas grill which is more expensive, but very convenient. Grilling outside is one of my favorite activities, followed closely by eating the food that I grill.

Creative Activities

Nothing is as satisfying as zoning out while making something. The doing is its own reward — but you'll also be rewarded with some of your own handiwork.

20. Wood shop

One of my favorite pastimes is working in my wood shop. I like to repair things, build small projects, and just spend time in my shop organizing my tools and thinking. A wood shop does not need to be expensive. I built one of my workbenches from a kit and others using recycled kitchen cabinets and countertops. Many of my tools were used tools that people gave me.

21. Photography

You can take surprisingly good photos with a cellphone or cheap digital camera, especially in outdoor lighting. A quality digital SLR camera with a zoom lens runs around $300 and will allow you to take your photography to the next level, providing more control over the camera settings.

22. Musical Instruments

You can pick up cheap used musical instruments on Craigslist or at consignment or pawnshops. Of course, buying the instrument is the easy part — learning to play it well takes work and practice.

23. Sewing

With a sewing machine, fabric, and a pattern, you can make your own clothes. Collecting bargain fabrics is part of the fun of sewing.

Social Activities

It's a fact of life that other people can be the cause of so much stress. It's also a fact of life that other people are often the cure.

24. Volunteer Work

There are lots of opportunities available to volunteer some of your time working for a good cause. Volunteering can be a good way to do something you enjoy and meet other people with similar interests. Some ideas for volunteering: animal shelter, food pantry, political campaign, church organizations.

25. Visiting

If you get bored hanging around your own house, try going to someone else's house! Visiting friends or family is a cheap way to get out of the house and do something different for a change of pace. Having people come over to visit at your place can inspire you to get cleaning and projects done.

26. Playing Cards

Playing cards is a classic cheap pastime, as long as you aren’t placing bets. Poker, bridge, and euchre are some popular card games that allow you to play competitively with others.

Cheap Entertainment

Finally, it's okay to be a couch potato from time to time.

27. Sports Fan

Some people spend a lot as sports fans, paying big money for tickets to games and buying team jerseys and other paraphernalia. But being a sports fan doesn’t have to be expensive. I don’t subscribe to any TV service, but I can find many of my Iowa Hawkeye football games for free, either on over-the-air TV or on radio broadcasts. Sometimes I can find a free video stream of the game on the Internet.

28. News Junkie

I listen to National Public Radio (NPR) for about an hour every day to keep up on news and world events. When I miss my chance to listen to the news for some reason, I feel out of touch and usually end up going on the Internet to check news stories I am following. Keeping up with the news is a cheap pastime and makes it easy to have an intelligent conversation with anyone you meet.

What are your favorite cheap pastimes?

This article is from Dr Penny Pincher of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. You could spend a fortune on a gym membership and personal trainers, but certain small, clever fitness investments can do the same (or more) for a much lower cost.

Here are a few fitness tech gadgets that really pay off.

Fitness Trackers

Fitness trackers have been hot for a couple of years now, and they are certainly a smart way for those of use with a sedentary lifestyle to gently increase exercise and improve overall wellness. As a bonus, they're cheaper than a gym membership and can help you incorporate more movement in your real life, rather than trying to make huge — and ultimately unsustainable — lifestyle changes.

If you're in the market for a fitness tracker, Fitbit Blaze could be the thing for you. At around $200, it is more expensive than bracelet style trackers, but makes up for that in both form and function.

Aside from the aesthetics (this is a watch design), the tracker includes all you would expect — step count, activity and sleep trackers, and so on — and more. The gadget has a heart rate monitor built in and even allows you to monitor your calls and texts on the go. The main bonus is the ability to access workouts on your device, which might make this a worthwhile investment if it means you can drop that costly gym subscription.

Smart Shorts

Lumo products are perfect for runners seeking to improve performance. The tracker clips onto your clothing, or can be inserted into a specially designed pocket in Lumo's own range of smart apparel, and measures your running style like no other. This gadget is more like having your own running coach in your pocket than an average fitness tracker, providing lab-standard biometric data all the way through your training. Get details about your stride pattern, bounce, and cadence, which can then be converted by the app into drills and exercises for improvement.

Use the sensor with headphones to get live, on-the-go coaching based on the measurements being taken, or simply download the data after your run for some analysis and action planning. Even better, the gear is available for preorder at a discount, starting from under $80 for the tracker and clip.

Fitness, Diet, and Goal Tracking Apps

The world of apps and gadgets has exploded in recent years. The theory goes that by monitoring as much as you can, you have a better opportunity to understand and ultimately improve your health and wellness. Over time you build a data set which allows you to see the progress, either through getting more active, eating better, improving metrics like your weight or heart rate, or cutting back on bad habits.

If you go out running or cycling regularly, try Strava, which is designed to track and share your training, and can help you share your progress by linking to your social media accounts. For an all round support system covering nutrition, stress, sleep and exercise, try Noom, a smart app that allows you to track your progress and receive expert advice.

Finally, if you're in the UK, check out Sweatcoin, the app that makes your exercise pay you. Track your steps and swap them for "sweatcoins" you can cash in for real rewards. Going global soon, so get ready!

Digital Coaching

Digital coaching is a great halfway house if you want some human input into your training but can't afford the time or money for a personal trainer. Apps such as coach.me are designed to allow you to track your progress against a goal, and enlist the support of a remote trainer.

If the midriff is looking a little wobbly, and the prospect of summer on the beach is sending a shiver up your spine, then don't be tempted to throw money at the problem. Instead, do a bit of research into the tech products and services that can help you get in shape without breaking the bank. The range on offer is developing every day, leaving very little room for excuses when it is time to bust out that bikini.

What fitness tech products are working for you?
