This can get exceedingly expensive for women who buy into the high priced anti-aging skincare lines and like to stay on top of the latest cosmetics trends. Fortunately, there are a few new ways to save that don't require sorting through the bargain bin at the end of each season.

Here are the seven best ways to stretch your dollar in the beauty department.

1. Sign Up for Surprise Beauty Box Subscriptions

Beauty box services like Glossy Box, Ipsy, or Sample Society all work in more or less the same way. You select a plan with the type of products you're interested in getting and how long of a contract you want (typically, the longer your contract, the bigger the discount). Then every month you get a box in the mail, filled with sample or full-size beauty products to test out.

What's the Catch?

Most of these services are upfront about the fees and quality of products, but there's no way of knowing what you'll receive from month to month. It's possible to end up with a box full of products that you have no interest in using.

2. Sign Up for Retailer Rewards

Beauty companies that offer rewards systems pay you cash, redeemable points, or special discounts depending on the dollar amount you spend at their store. Some may even offer lower members-only prices. When signing up, make sure to ask about the program's benefits, so that you can figure out the best way it can work for you. For example, the CVS reward program offers personalized coupons, weekly sales to members, and 2% cash back on all purchases. Other programs to consider: Beauty.com, Sephora, Sally Beauty Supply, Ulta, and CVS.

What's the Catch?

Rewards programs are a good deal, but read the fine print. Some companies may limit the items available to purchase with reward points or price reward items ridiculously high. For example, Sephora offers one reward point for each dollar spent, but it takes 100 points (or 100 dollars spent) to redeem one sample-size mascara.

3. Shop Online

Online beauty retailers like Dermstore, Beauty.com and Beautybar.com can offer better prices because they don't have the same overhead costs as a traditional brick and mortar. These retailers pass on the savings through daily or weekly sales, special promotions, and additional coupons found on third-party coupon websites.

What's the Catch?

You don't get the luxury of trying new products like you would in-store and to receive free shipping you have to meet the minimum order value of $35-$50.

4. Buy the Bundled Kit

Some brand-specific retailers promote the use of their products in a group or kit, for best results. For the full package, they offer big savings. For example, at Murad their "Environmental Shield Introductory Kit" costs under $40, but if you bought all the components separately, the cost would be $125.

What's the Catch?

As long as you want all the products in the kit, this one's a no-brainer.

5. Get Those Free Samples!

There are four ways to get free samples.

When the woman at the department store counter asks if you want a free sample, you say, "Yes!"

Stores like Sephora have sample containers waiting to be filled with products you'd like to try; you just have to ask an employee for it.

Check websites like Womanfreebies and Shopathome for updates on a variety of free stuff including bath and beauty supplies.

Manufacturers new and old are fighting for your business and offer free samples so that you can try them out, so check their websites for details.

What's the Catch?

You may not get the full benefit of a product from a sample size. Especially with skin and hair care products, potential results may not show up until a certain number of uses that can't be fulfilled in a one or two-time portion.

6. Compare Ingredients

According to a ShopSmart interview with cosmetics chemist Randy Shueller, "if the first five ingredients are the same or nearly the same, then the product is probably very similar." They compared three similar products and found that the less expensive products were 50% cheaper — for the same ingredients!

What's the Catch?

You'll have to spend a little more time doing the research on these ingredients. But even if you know them inside out, the unfortunate truth is that beauty product labels don't state the usage amount of the ingredients listed. For all you know, they used a drop of the ingredient you need in your beauty product.

7. Buy Reusable Applicators

Every time you use a traditional foundation applicator, you have to throw it away. Instead, replace your one-time use foundation sponges with a reusable foundation brush or beauty blender sponge that will last you up to 3-6 months. Depending on how often it's used and how well you take care of it, it may even last longer. This will eliminate your restocking fees and decrease the unnecessary waste that's produced by traditional sponge applicators.

What's the Catch?

Nothing more than a change and learning curve, but there are hundreds of YouTube beauty tutorials that will show you the best ways of using it.

What are your best beauty savings secrets? When you don't have the energy or time to focus on how you look, or when you end up neglecting the things that make you feel the most attractive, it's even easier to feel ugly and dump on your appearance. (See also: Want to Be More Attractive? Work These 5 Words (and Phrases) Into Your Vocabulary)

But there are some easy ways to feel better about how you look, even when you can't do a whole lot to change your features or your figure.

1. Don't Compare Yourself

Or, at least, don't compare yourself with people whose bodies are unrealistic goals for most of humanity. If your standard of attractiveness is too high, you'll always be discouraged. Since most of us will compare ourselves whether we want to or not, try to compare yourself to other normal people in your culture, and who are about your age. This will make you feel so much more attractive than when you compare yourself to unachievable ideals.

2. Wear Sexy Clothes No One Can See

In most contexts, you won't want to wear especially sexy clothes on the outside. However, wearing that silky something just because you want to do it can make you feel so much more attractive, not to mention confident. If sexiness isn't your thing, you can wear clothes that are special for you. Hide your ninja socks in your tall boots or sneak a snakeskin belt under an oversized shirt, and you will feel more attractive than ever.

3. Focus on Other People

If you think about yourself all the time, you'll become more and more self-conscious. Instead, think about other people. Make attempts to talk, to draw them out of their shells, and even to connect people to each other. When you're doing this, your feelings of insecurity will grow smaller and smaller, which means that you'll feel better about who you are and how you look.

4. Know What You Love About Yourself

Even if you don't love the way you look and feel chronically underappreciated, there are things about yourself that you like. Make a list of these, and refer to it until you can remember these things by heart. When you know what you like about yourself, you will feel more confident about yourself in all areas, including how you look.

5. Think Positive Thoughts

Try consciously thinking, "my eyes are a gorgeous shade of blue," as opposed to just focusing on your flaws. This will help you balance the places where you aren't attractive with the places where you are, which will raise how you feel about your looks overall.

6. Smile More

Smiling makes you feel happier. And, when you feel happier, you are likely to feel good about yourself and your life, including how you look. While smiling may also influence how other people see you, this is just for you. Smile to feel better about everything in your life, including your appearance.

7. Stand Up Straight

Square your shoulders and remind yourself that you can take on the world if you have to. When you are able to look the world in the eye, you will feel better about all aspects of who you are. This means you'll feel more attractive, and also more powerful, more influential, and more confident.

8. Remember What Your Body Can Do

When you feel unattractive, it's easy to focus on all of the things that are wrong with your body. When you think about what your body can do, the gifts it gives you, you will feel more attractive simply because you will feel better about your body, and it's hard to think well of something and be down on it at the same time.

9. Make Something You Are Proud Of

This may seem counterintuitive, but think about it. When you create something that makes you glad, it's easier to feel attractive. Even if you still aren't thrilled with your appearance, you will be reminded of your inner beauty and the things that you can create from the lovely place. Focusing on inner beauty may seem cheesy, but the truth is that who you are on the inside counts for so much more, and making things will help you remember this.

10. Find Clothes You Love

It's hard to feel unattractive when you are wearing clothes that you love. Even if you love a dress because it is so soft or a shirt because of the way it feels against your skin, you will feel better about your body and, therefore, should feel more attractive, too. If you don't know how to find clothes you love, go shopping with someone who loves to shop. They should be able to help you find exactly what you need to feel better.

11. Lower Your Stress Level

Stress can make us anxious and we are more likely to feel unattractive when we are anxious. Thus, it makes sense that lowering your stress level would make you feel better about your appearance. If you're not sure how to do this, try taking some down time. Do something you love, even if you only have 15 minutes. Read, watch TV, paint, or cook, then check in with how attractive you feel when you're done.

12. Say "Thank You"

When you give thanks, you focus on what is good about your life. If you're feeling unattractive, focus on things you're thankful for about your body. You may love the texture of your hair, or the way your calves fit so well in boots. Even if most of the things you're thankful for are little, the act of giving thanks for them will help you feel more attractive. If you're like most people in America, you store milk, eggs, meats, cheeses, soft drinks, juices, and a whole bunch of fruit and vegetables. In short, the fridge is for food, right? Well, not always. (See also: Fridge or Counter? Where to Store Fruit for Best Flavor)

Turns out there are lots of things better served cold, like these 12 surprising items you should consider keeping in your fridge.

1. Candles

You can extend the burning life of taper candles by storing them in your refrigerator. Place them in something that will stop them absorbing moisture, such as zip-lock bags, foil, or cling wrap. Then when the time comes to use them, you'll get more bright for your buck.

2. Rechargeable Batteries

When you're not using batteries, don't keep them in the junk drawer or garage cabinet. Instead, pop them in the fridge; batteries can be preserved by keeping them cold. You can extend them by minutes or hours, and can get some seemingly dead batteries to come back to life. The freezer works well for this, too.

3. Whole Wheat Flour

That's not a mistake. The wheat germ in whole-wheat flour has a short shelf life, and can go off pretty quickly. You should keep your whole-wheat flour in the fridge, but make sure you put it in an airtight container. Flour acts like sponge for other odors and flavors, and anything strong (like onion) can taint the whole batch. Nobody wants a bunch of onion flavored cupcakes.

4. Metal Spoons

Why would you want access to a cold spoon? This is a tip from people who work in the beauty profession. If you wake up with bags under your eyes, pressing the back of a cold metal spoon against them can take away the puffiness and swelling. This is, however, only a temporary solution. It also works with slices of cold cucumber, but the great thing about spoons is that they never go bad.

5. Skin Cream and Sunscreen

If you don't like the idea of pressing icy-cold metal to your face, store your skin cream in the fridge instead. Keeping it nice and cold will have a similar effect to the cold spoons, and it's also a soothing thing to put on in the hot weather. This goes double for sunscreen on hot days.

6. Nail Polish

Celebrity manicurist (yes, there is such a profession) Kait Mosh says that heat and light are the enemies of nail polish, and will thicken it up over time. As the father of two young girls, I can't tell you how many times I've tried applying goopy nail polish, with awful results. To stop this happening, keep your nail polish in the fridge. It will prolong the life and keep it flowing freely.

7. Bowls and Plates

If you're a fan of ice cream (and who isn't?) or other cold foods, it doesn't hurt to devote a section of your fridge to a few plates and bowls. They stack nicely, and when it comes time for a helping of ice cream, the cold bowl stops it from melting as quickly. It's also good for any other foods that will benefit from staying colder, longer.

8. Olive Oil

You may not realize it, but olive oil is delicate. Many experts agree that the best way to store olive oil is in the same conditions as wine — roughly 57 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course, very few of us have a wine cellar or wine fridge, so the next best things is a spot in the regular fridge. (Note: High-end or premium extra-virgin olive oils should not get the same treatment, as it interferes with the flavor and aroma.)

9. Camera Film

Does anyone still use traditional camera film any more? Yes, they do. Like vinyl, it's starting to make a comeback. There are certain effects people want from traditional film that are difficult to fake in the digital world. However, it's a lot more difficult to get hold of camera film these days, and it's more expensive. So make sure it produces the best results by keeping your camera film in the fridge. It won't extend the shelf life though.

10. Nuts

You can double the shelf life of nuts by keeping them in the fridge. A tub of them in the pantry will last three months, but that can be extended to six months in your fridge. You can also freeze them and extend their life to over a year. Just like flour, remember to keep them in air-tight containers as they will absorb odors from strong-smelling foods.

11. Flower Bulbs

Professional gardeners can chime in on this one, but many people store tulip bulbs in the fridge for 12-16 weeks as a method of "forcing" them to send up shoots:

You can chill the bulbs in the old-fashioned way by potting them up and placing the pots in cold storage (40 to 45 F). An easier method, especially if space is limited, is to place the bulbs themselves in the fridge for the big chill, then planting in pots.

12. Dead Birds

How could I not include this one? Of course, don't expect to get your money back from the magic store. You have to admit, it's the most surprising item on the list!

What do you keep in your fridge, other than the obvious items? So we troll the beauty aisle, picking up little pots of ointment, bottles of cleanser, and tubes of cream that all promise breathtaking results. In fact, the only thing that's breathtaking is the price tag. Healthy and beauty experts tell us that 90% of these products are simple soap and moisturizer in expensive packaging. (See also: 24 Places to Buy Inexpensive Natural Beauty Products)

Save your money and protect yourself from a plethora of unnecessary chemical ingredients by tossing these 14 pointless beauty products to the curb.

1. Foot and Elbow Lotions

Any lotion or moisturizer that claims to be specially formulated for one specific part of the body is a scam. Cosmetic companies would love nothing more than to see you buy a separate product for each appendage. The truth is that a good quality body lotion can be used on any and all body parts, and there is no discernible benefit to targeted lotions.

2. Anti-Aging Creams

There is no such thing as a face-lift in a bottle. The value of an anti-aging cream can be determined by its active ingredients. Most are nothing more than moisturizer in a fancy container. It appears to plump and smooth for the moment, but results are temporary.

3. Toner

Many of us have been taught that toner is an important part of a daily skincare regimen, but this is outdated advice. Toner is nothing more than a cleanser meant to remove soap residue. The good news is, most modern facial soaps leave little to no residue, so you can skip the second-cleaning. (See also: 15 Wonderful Uses for Witch Hazel)

4. Cellulite Cream

Like anti-aging creams, we want so desperately to believe that anti-cellulite creams can smooth and tone our bodies. Unfortunately they can't. If you look closely, most of these products claim to reduce "the appearance of cellulite." Big red flag. While the caffeine in most formulas will temporarily firm the skin, the only thing that can really remove those dimples is a healthy diet and some exercise.

5. Lip Exfoliator

Remember what we said earlier about products "specially designed" for a single body part? Rip off. Same goes for the sugar and oil concoctions now being marketed as the short-cut to soft lips. Your lips, like the rest of your body, are capable of exfoliating naturally. If you want to help it along, wash with a cloth and then apply moisturizer.

6. Makeup Remover

Makeup can clog pores, and you should never leave it on your face overnight. However, a $5-$10 bottle of makeup remover is an unnecessary expense. Simply use your regular facial cleanser to remove the bulk of the residue. If you used particularly heavy or waterproof makeup (especially on your eyes), dab a bit of moisturizer on a tissue and rub gently to remove it.

7. Foot Masks

No one likes dry or cracking feet, especially during sandal season, but if you're using foot masks, you're wasting money for no reason (and you probably feel kind of silly). Use a pumice stone to slough away dead skin in a jiffy, and then apply your regular body lotion to heels and toes before you go to bed at night.

8. Pore Strips

Blackheads are what happens when dirt and oil gets trapped in our pores. Since we've got lots of pores, it's easy to get lots of blackheads. It would be great if there were an easy way to just suck them out of our entire face at once, but there isn't. Pore strips claim to lift away blackheads, but since many linger just under the skin's surface, they rarely do. Instead, they leave the area dry and irritated — perfect conditions for acne and more blackheads.

9. High SPF Sunscreen

The connection between sun exposure and skin cancer is obvious, so we slather on lots of sunscreen to protect ourselves. If SPF 25 is good, SPF 100 must be better, right? Wrong. There is no proven benefit to any SPF higher than 30. Anything more is just a waste of money and a false sense of security. (See also: Cheap and Simple Sunburn Remedies That Really Work)

10. Heat Defense Hair Serum

In a world where hair is brushed, dyed, ironed, and curled on a regular basis, it's no surprise that it occasionally looks fried. Various serums and sprays claim to defend your hair against heat treatments, but most benefits are temporary at best. Some make your hair sticky and even more prone to breakage.

11. Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

Spotted a few flakes on your shoulder? You might want to reach for the anti-dandruff shampoo — but don't. Most of these soaps actually dry your scalp out, creating even more flakes. The best thing you can do for a dry scalp is brush your hair. Brushing redistributes your body's natural oils and sloughs away flakes.

12. Color-Enhancing Hair Care

You just spent $120 on a new hair color, and you want it to last forever. The stylist will likely try to sell you a "color-enhancing" shampoo or conditioner, but don't take the bait. "These shampoos have more additives than others" and "contain a temporary color stain that's more detrimental than beneficial." The best way to keep your color fresh is reducing shower frequency.

13. Shaving Cream

They feel nice, but most shaving creams are an expensive way to help the razor glide smoothly over your skin. Look for a moisturizing body wash with lots of glycerin, and kill two birds with one stone.

14. Vibrating Mascara

Mascara is hard enough to apply correctly, who on earth would you want the stick to vibrate on purpose? This high-cost beauty product is yet another example of stupid idea wrapped up in fancy packaging, accompanied by a flashy commercial. To help, we've created a long list of places — online and off — where you can buy quality natural beauty products at a price that won't sabotage your budget. Yes, I am only 33. And no, I don't have some kind of dysmorphic disorder, and I'm not completely obsessed with every wrinkle or line on my face. I don't adore the process of aging, but whaddya gonna do, you know?

But I will admit to a certain amount of vanity, and the truth is, I got really upset when I noticed this rather deep line between my eyebrows. It's not so much from aging as it is from frowning. I frown a LOT. I work at a computer all day, and when I have to concentrate, or when I'm nervous, or when I'm angry or sad, I frown. I frown when I sleep, I've been told. I'm a frowner.

I won't lie; I'm not a super happy person. I'm grumpy a lot of the time, and I have been since I was very young. My family is not a miserable family, although depression does tend to run in the Slavic side. My childhood was relatively happy, but I'm not what you would call "joyful." I'm not depressed, but I definitely come from a long line of women who aren't particularly fond of perkiness. During college, I went through a period of rather extreme depression, and while I found that medication helped at the time, it's not a long-term solution for me. I've come to accept that I've never been, and will never be, a bright and cheery kind of person.

Also, I get angry easily. Most of my mornings start with me glaring at myself in the bathroom mirror for about five minutes. Most of the time, though, I don't realize that I am frowning — I do it all the time, while writing, talking on the phone, watching a movie, and I don't even realize that it's happening until I've been doing it for about an hour and my forehead starts to ache.

About a year ago, the presence of that rather deep line between my brows got the better of me, and I paid a very nice nurse at a local surgeon's office approximately $140 dollars to inject toxins into my face. Honestly, I was terrified that I would end up looking like those stretch-faced, zombie women on TV, unable to express the most basic emotion through facial muscles. My nurse assured me that she had Botox, and she looked, at age 40, really great — not frozen and zombified. I took the plunge.

Aside from the cost, my only complaint about the treatment was that I had a pretty bad headache for about a week. Once that disappeared, though, and the muscles started to relax, I was happy to see that the line between my brows pretty much disappeared. And yes, the muscles couldn't move, so I couldn't furrow my brow. I could still raise my eyebrows and narrow my eyes, and obviously my cheeks and mouth weren't affected, so I could FROWN, but not furrow. I simply couldn't activate the muscles that would draw my brows together.

Then I noticed something: I felt a lot less angry. Whenever I would find myself getting frustrated at something (usually at work), just as I could feel my face pulling into a frown, I would realize that it just couldn't be done. I couldn't frown. And without the ability to do that, I didn't stay angry very long. Momentary irritation tended to fizzle, and while it's true that my job wasn't any easier, I just didn't get as upset about it. I even mentioned it to a coworker, who assured me that I was (1) crazy and (2) trying to justify having spent $140 on Botox. I told my parents, both medical professionals, about the effect on my mood, and they both sighed heavily and wondered what they had ever done to raise a daughter who couldn't love her own face.

Well, who's having the last laugh now? That would be me (yes, I can still laugh), after finding that my experience of having botox improve my mood is not only common, but that it has a scientific explanation. Facial feedback hypothesis, which has previously told us that smiling can actually make us feel happier even when we naturally aren't, can also explain why someone who is unable to frown fully doesn't maintain a steady state of anger. It turns out that it's not just your moods that affect your facial expressions, but your facial expressions that affect your moods. Thus, someone who forces themselves to smile when they feel down can significantly improve their own mood, and someone who stops frowning when upset can stem the tide of anger or depression.

Botox, it seems, can make you happier. Or at least, Botox can make you less unhappy.

I'm not going to pretend that the over-application of Botox doesn't freak me out. Between aging Hollywood madams on TV and physicians wives elbowing me aside at the shoe department at Nordstrom, I agree that a totally Botoxified face is a terror to behold. But in small amounts, I have to say, it really has been a godsend.

My $140 worth of Botox lasted longer than expected — approximately 6 months (I was told to expect 3). Twenty-three dollars a month for an improved mood is worth it to me.

No word yet on whether total facial paralysis limits all kinds of emotions, although I imagine limiting one's ability to smile might make them less happy?

This article is from Andrea Karim of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. And if you’re visualizing it right now, I’m really sorry…especially if you’re eating. No, I’m basically reacting to several incidentover the past few weeks/months/years which have forced me to come to the following conclusion: getting deals seems to be a whole lot easier if you’re easier on the eye.

I’m no oil painting: shaved head; average features; I could certainly lose a few pounds. But I do have an English accent. An ace up my sleeve which has, on occasion, helped me sway a few people here and there. Not by much, but enough to get an additional 10% off or a freebie thrown into a purchase. It’s peanuts to what I’ve witnessed with my own four eyes (I wear glasses, often another setback) when a pretty lady uses her charms on the average guy. I’m sure I’ll hear cries of sexism, but this has nothing to do with the intelligence of the girls…rather, the lack of intelligence of the people sucking up to them.

I’ve chatted with girls at work who have escaped speeding tickets not once, but on three or four occasions. I have had two tickets from two violations. I put my hands on the wheel each time, used very polite language and was extremely courteous. It got me nowhere. But some of the girls at the office, and their friends, told me how easy it was for them to get away with no ticket at all – just bat your eyelids, hike up your cleavage and play ‘the little girl lost’ routine.

If there are any male police officers out there, I’d like to ask a question; what do you really think is going to happen when you let a sassy blonde get away without a ticket? Do you really think she’ll give you her phone number? Seriously, why let her break the law and let others pay for it?

Just the other day I saw three guys in Circuit City crowding around a pretty blonde who was looking at Blu-Ray players. I was annoyed because I couldn’t find anyone to help me find the DVD I wanted for my wife’s Mother’s Day present. But of course, I didn’t quite stand out in the same way as this part-time Playboy model did. In the end, I had to go to the in-store computer terminal and find the thing myself.

I have been in bars where the waiters have literally shouted past three rows of people to ask a scantily-clad blonde what she was drinking. We all look, shouting “Hey, what about us? Waiter! Over here?!”

You name the situation, I guarantee I’ve been shunned in favor of the beauty queen who graces the establishment with her presence. It’s almost like some girls expect special treatment. Indeed, a very cocky girl I know says that her looks have got her everything from free cab rides to free landscaping. And all because she’s a dead ringer for one of those “Girls Next Door.”

It’s not always blondes of course, pretty ladies in general seem to have an advantage over those of us with more down to earth looks. Some guys have the edge, too. I’ve often felt like the Hunchback Of Notre Dame when a 6ft chiseled guy with abs of steel has stood next to me at the bar and waved to the bar staff. The girls rush to his aid, the guys want to be his best bud. This may have something to do with The Halo Effect , a common term used in business. You can read more about it, but many people out there associate positive (or becoming) looks with other positive traits, like kindness or intelligence.

Why, as a society, do we feel the need to give an extra helping hand to people who clearly have already been given an advantage? Why do we suck up to the pretty people? What do we think we’ll gain by it? And what can folks like me, the ordinaries, do to compete with them? I’d love to hear your own stories on the matter. If you’re one of the blondes with ample cleavage for instance, how often have you noticed special treatment? Conversely, did you get the opposite treatment because of your looks? And if you’re more of a ‘blend in with the crowd’ person, how did you get one-up on the person blessed with a rather nice outer shell?

It’s strange to think that just the way we look can alter the kind of deals we can get. Online, it rarely makes a difference. I find most of my deals that way. But put me up against someone with the looks of Jessica Simpson and my entire negotiating skills pale in comparison. Fair? Hey, considering the way people react it seems natural to use what you’ve got. (And if I had it, you can bet I’d flaunt it.)

This article is from Paul Michael of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. We're looking for fresh, frugal, natural ideas. Here's an example from a friend of mine:

My parents used to buy coconut oil from the market in Nairobi where we lived. They would then take all three of us kids, scrub us really good in the tub, and coat us with coconut oil, from head to toe and have us sit outside (naked, but we were only 5-7 years old) in the warm sun for about an hour. Not directly in the sun, of course. The we'd get hosed off, and then washed with a gentle soap. Our skin would be soft and supple for a full week afterwards. To this day, I still like to give my hair a coconut oil treatment every month or so. I comb the oil through my hair while leaning over the bathtub, then wrap it in a towel and sit around and read for an hour. It's a little like doing a Vidal Sasson hot oil treatment, but more natural and cheaper. Then I wash my hair with a gentle shampoo and condition it. Very shiny. A note of caution, though - if you oil your hair and then get into the shower, it will be incredibly slippery. Take precautions not to slip.

Your idea doesn't have to be purely of the kitchen ingredients-variety. A friend of mine pointed out that kissing her stubbly boyfriend's mug is a grea exfoliator. A brunch pal suggested that there is nothing better for the complexion than a quick romp in the sheets in the afternoon.

See how easy it is? You don't have to write a lot - just a few words about a home remedy beauty treatment that you like, and the benefits it gives you. Again, be sure to use a real email address so we can contact you if you win our homebased beauty tip drawing.

Click here to see what is included in the Essential Body Kit.

The dealine for contributing your home-based beauty trick idea is May 15th. It's close. http://www.wisebread.com/is-green-tea-all-its-cracked-up-to-be-its-close

I've been enjoying the snarky articles at Slate.com recently focusing on the commoditization of Eastern traditions, such as yoga. As someone who purchases but never uses yoga clothing, mats, and accessories, I can truly appreciate the hypocrisy in the American tendency to turn something that is supposed to be purifying and healthy into something that is really a money-making scheme.

However, I have to take issue with Jacob Weisberg's recent article that more or less tries to dismiss the trend that is green tea, mostly by linking to the myriad of products that use green tea as an ingredient. I'm bothered by a few issues that he raises, mostly because, well, I really freaking love green tea.

Now, I long ago discarded the notion that the East has much to teach us about metaphysical stuff. Don't get me wrong - I'm an Asiaphile. But it's not because I find any deep and inherent wisdom in the cultures that make up "the Orient". I like Asia because the land is stunning, the languages are fascinating, the history is long, and the men are handsome.

That said, Easterners are as messed-up as as Westerners. Sure, there are some lovely traditions to be had all across Asia, both found in extinct rituals and current practices. But there are lovely traditions to be found in Portugal, too. Only we don't categorize the Portugese as particularly deep, whereas I think that Asians get put on a spiritual pedestal that isn't fair to anyone.

Commercialism and greed are rampant everywhere in the world, and I don't think that someone who grew up in, say, Vietnam, has any more to teach the world than someone who grew up in Alabama. So my defense of tea-drinking isn't stemming from any illusion that the West is merely a commercial shell of a place with no soul, and Asia is the land of enlightenment or anything.

There's no Ganesh on my bookshelf at home, get it?

OK? Good. Now that that is out of the way. Green tea.

It's an acquired taste...

Like coffee, beer, and avocados, your first impression of green tea might have been something like, "Oh. That's, uh. Hm. Ick." When I first tasted green tea at the age of 12, I can't say that I was delighted with it, either. Our exchange student, who hailed from Tokyo, had brought packets of matcha with her for us to sample. To me, it was like drinking a ground-up version of the hay that we fed the horses in 4-H. Only bitter.

It wasn't until I traveled to Japan for the first time that I started to really appreciate green tea, if not the long ceremonies surrounding it that caused me to experience some severe Charlie horses (I do appreciate the meditation and skill and patience involved in tea ceremonies, I simply can't sit on my knees for the length of one). After that trip, I developed a real love for green tea, of which there are many kinds. Also, I decided that green tea flavoring was the best. thing. ever.

So, my feathers get ruffled when I read someone who wants to disparage green tea for no good reason, other than the fact that they are sick of hearing about it, and kind of want to make fun of a few products and their respective marketing campaigns.

If Slate.com's Jacob Weisberg had written an article saying "I'm really sick of hearing about green tea", I'd be fine, because that's honest. But alas, that was not his tactic. I understand the need to snark about some things, but the green tea attack feels forced and pointless. Also, there are some criticisms of the green tea fad that I just don't find legitimate.

The Snark: Eastern Tradition Hijacked by the West

In the United States, "Eastern" tends to blur together Hinduism, Buddhism, and hucksterism. It inevitably involves something to buy and usually something to eat as well. Only this harmonic-entrepreneurial convergence can explain the invention of New Zen Green Tea Truffles and Green Tea Gummy Pandas, snacks that transform a foggy idea of virtue into morsels of vice.

Now, I agree that the whole East=Wisdom & Peace thing can be tedious. I throw up a little when I see Chinese character stepping stones in gardens. But I don't think we can apply this to green tea.

The Truth: They Started It!

It's a fallacy, and kind of cocky, to assume that just because a trend is popular, it must have started in the West. Green tea is a very popular flavor throughout Asia, and has been for a long time. You can get green tea EVERYTHING in China, Japan, and Korea. Yogurt, Pocky, ice cream (the only ice cream I like, actually), mochi, chocolates, cookies, gum - the list goes on forever. (Also, there's lots of melon-flavored stuff, and I sincerely believe that honeydew-flavored yogurt is the closest thing to heaven that most people can ever hope to experience).

The traditional Asian palette hasn't (yet) been tuned to super-sweet tastes, and green tea is a nice flavor in that it tones down the hyper-sugary taste of many desserts and treats. Desserts in East Asia tend to favor sweetened red beans, lightly sweet gelatin, and sometimes sweetened milk. But usually, dessert in Asia is fruit.

Recap: the green-tea-in-everything trend didn't start in the US, but I'm glad it being adopted here, because it's freaking delicious.

Also, sure, "Zen" food might sound pretensious, unless you happen to understand the "Zen" that is a good piece of chocolate. "Zen" truffles are logical to anyone who finds bliss (scroll down to "Chocolate and The Nervous System") in cocoa.

The Snark: Who Knows if It's Good for You?

Next, Weisberg attacks claims that green tea is really, really good for you.

Under the Food and Drug Administration's policy of permitting "qualified health claims" for which there is some evidence—often based on industry-funded research—marketers can make all sorts of improbable boasts (see under pomegranate juice). Even when it rejects such assertions, as it has for green tea and all cancers as well as heart disease, the FDA seldom does anything to stop them.

He has a point here, and the long-term benefits of green tea may not be well-established. In fact, I'm sick and tired of studies that show this and studies that show that. Bran, beta carotene, vitamin C, chromium, soy - we're told to consume them like crazy to prevent cancer, and then told a few months later that they CAUSE cancer.

Until we really buckle down and have some less biased studies, I wouldn't recommend that anyone drink lots of green tea, especially in the stead of actually exercising and eating well. I don't know if green tea can really prevent health problems or cancer or anything else.

The Truth: It's Good for ME

But I do know this: I am a diabetic (Type 2, for those who need to know), and drinking green tea lowers my blood sugar.

I know this because I have tested my blood sugar before and after drinking green tea, and it will drop my sugar by as much as 30 points. I'm not saying that it works for everyone (it has the opposite affect on my sister, who has a bad blood sugar spike with any caffeine), but it works for some people, and shouldn't be discounted. Not that my experience alone is enough to validate the health benefits - but I think it should be studied, in the same way that cinnamon was.

The Snark: Coprorations Blah Blah Blah Fat Americans

Weisberg follows up with the familiar "Well, BIG BAD COMPANIES put green tea in stuff that isn't healthy, but you think it's healthy because it has green tea in it, but it's not healthy because it's Starbucks" spiel. He even goes so far as to diss my local favorite green-tea joint Koots (Holla!), as a seller or less-than-healthy green-tea-infused items (green tea cheesecake - try it when you're in town).

This follows on the success of Starbucks' Tazo Green Tea Frappuccino, which also uses matcha, green tea in pulverized form. A "venti" has 560 calories if you hold the whipped cream. (The unappreciated business genius of Starbucks is not charging $4 for a latte but rather giving adults permission to drink milkshakes, on the pretext that they are merely tea or coffee.) This is exceeded by the 640 calories in the "power" version of the Matcha Green Tea Blast from Jamba Juice, a franchise chain chasing Howard Schultz's caffeinated footsteps.

The Truth: It's Tasty, and No One is Lying About the Calories

You know, I don't think there's a single item at Starbucks that I enjoy that comes in at under 400 calories. And it is possible that people in line at Starbucks are saying to themselves "Hm. The white chocolate mocha with raspberry... that sounds good. Oh, wait, green tea frappucino! That's GOT to be good for me!". But those people are dumb, and they'd choose something terrible whether the green tea was there or not.

[Also, I know a lot of women who have Starbucks for breakfast. Just a drink. 500 calories for breakfast isn't that bad. 3 meals a day x 500 calories + 200 calorie snack = 1700 calories a day. Now, if a 500 calorie drink is being consumed as a snack, then you've got a problem, but I don't know many women who "snack" at Starbucks, and their frappucinos are a meal.]

A trend is a trend, Weisberg! The next big push from Starbucks is going to be South American-influenced flavors. You got something against mangos and pretty Brazilian women in skimpy bikinis? Eh? Everyone loves a Brazilian!

The Snark: Down with White-tea! (Get it? White-tea? Whitey? Har!)

Next, in what I can only assume is an attempt at humor, Weisberg goes after the beauty industry for putting green tea in its products, and says this [emphasis mine]:

Origins "Perfect World" products are made with increasingly fashionable white tea, which is sort of baby green tea (think baby arugula). According to the company, white tea is "among the most potent antioxidants, anti-agers, anti-stress, anti-smoke, anti-pollution antidotes." How is it that tea becomes more medically potent as it loses color and flavor? Next in this progression will be an invisible ghost tea with the regenerative properties of fetal stem cells.

Ha! Stem cells! What a riot! It's funny AND it's topical!

Well, it was topical a few months back, anyway.

The Truth: A Lesson in Oxidation

First let's look at the beauty argument; beauty-wise, green tea is mostly good for tightening your skin.

Bonus beauty tip: Steep a bag of green tea, and use the cooled water to water your houseplants. Take the tea bag (if you are using bagged tea) and swipe it around your face. It's like a tiny facelift. It doesn't last all day, but it's nice for a couple of hours. All caffeine is great for reducing puffiness, so you can dab a little aloe and green tea around your eyes to reduce puffy skin during allergy season.

Next, there's Weisberg's unfortunate belief that white tea can't possibly be as good, medicinally, as green tea.

Here's a brief explanation for those who, like Weisberg, think that young tea has LOST flavor, as opposed to NOT DEVELOPING THE FULL FLAVOR OF GREEN TEA:

...[T]ypes of tea are distinguished by the processing they undergo. Leaves of Camellia sinensis soon begin to wilt and oxidize if not dried quickly after picking. The leaves turn progressively darker because chlorophyll breaks down and tannins are released.... The next step in processing is to stop the oxidation process at a predetermined stage by heating, which deactivates the enzymes responsible. In black tea this is done simultaneously with drying.... Young leaves (new growth buds) that have undergone no oxidation; the buds may be shielded from sunlight to prevent formation of chlorophyll. White tea is produced in lesser quantities than most other styles, and can be correspondingly more expensive than tea from the same plant processed by other methods. It is less well known in countries outside of China, though this is changing with increased western interest in organic or premium teas.

Basically, the message is this: it's a leaf that grows until it is picked. After it is picked, it begins to oxidize unless it is dried. As it oxidizes, it gets darker. The darker it gets, the less beneficial stuff it has in it. It's still good for you, but not as good for you as it was when it was lighter and less oxidized. How difficult is that?

Weisberg ends up by snarking some more about green tea-infused booze, which I think we can all agree simply isn't an argument worth making. It's alcohol. Ergo, it's good.

MY point is the green tea is da bomb, whether on your mug or in your mug.

Yeah, but it tastes... meh.

I know some of you are thinking this. I've known a lot of people who claim that they just can't get into green tea. This is almost always because:

They are buying crappy tea and

They are burning the tea when they brew it

Buying

If you want to enjoy a cup of green tea, you have a couple decisions to make. First, decide if you want to pay more for good tea. Yes, you can buy bagged tea, and yes, there are good bagged teas. But you might as well buy loose leaf tea. It's just better quality, and you have more choice over what you are getting. With ground-up, bagged tea, who knows what kind of leaf is in there?

Tea bags are filled with ground up tea, either because ground up tea brews faster and the industry is worried that you won't wait more than 30 seconds for your tea, or because what you are drinking is the dust that is swept off of the floors in tea factories and farms around the world. Either way, you can guarantee higher quality tea if you buy it loose leaf.

Don't go nuts. Go somewhere that sells the tea, like a Whole Foods or an Asian market, and buy a little bit. Not much. No more than $10 worth. Oh, and do your darndest to buy organic.

Brewing

White and green tea have more anti-oxidants, and for some reason, scald really easily. Scalded tea is really bitter, and one bad cup can be enough to put someone off of tea for a while.

Although you can brew a tasty cup of Earl Grey with boiling water, you have to use cooler water to make a cup of white or green tea. In fact, in many tea houses in Asia, the water you use is close to tepid, just under steaming. Me, I just pour a cup of boiling water and then add about 1/5 cup of cold water, and that does the trick. I steep my tea for about three minutes the first time and about seven minutes on the second round (you can reuse the leaves).

Enjoying green tea doesn't have to be a transcendental experience or a guilt-trip. It's just a tasty thing that might be good for you.

This article is from Andrea Karim of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
