That being said, I've gotten sucked into different trends and products throughout the years. You know what? There are tons of grooming and beauty tools out there that just aren't worth the money. Here's our list of some items you can live without.

1. Toe Separators

Save money by painting your toenails at home and skipping the pricey pedicure. While you're at it, you can also skip those creepy foam toe separators. Yes, they may be cheap and make painting slightly less messy, but you can get the same benefit by weaving a little tissue paper between your toes. Save your hard-earned pennies for more pretty polishes!

2. Clarisonic

I jumped on the Clarisonic bandwagon several years ago. For those of you who are unfamiliar, it's a device that exfoliates skin using a motorized brush that costs around $149. It actually does work well. My skin did get more even with use. But the upkeep of the system is expensive and — in my opinion — not worth it when there are low-tech alternatives. For example, you should change the brush every three months and refill heads cost a crazy $22 each.

A good exfoliating cleanser (you can even make your own!) or plain old washcloth can do wonders for scrubbing your skin without the high price tag.

3. Makeup Brushes

A full makeup brush set is also not a necessity. In fact, I've never owned more than a couple brushes until recently (and those were Christmas gifts). The other 16 years I've been wearing makeup, I did most of it with my fingers or whatever tool comes free with the product.

If you just have to have some kind of applicator, makeup sponges — like these foam wedges — are the way to go. You can apply both liquid and powder products with them. Prefer something reusable? Check out this sponge blender that you can wash and dry between uses.

4. Zit Zappers

I had awful skin as a teenager and even as a young adult. Had zit zappers, like Zeno's Hot Spot, been on the market back then, I probably would have forked over the money to buy one. Unfortunately, the reviews on this device are pretty split. Some claim it really does work while others share it actually made their skin issues worse. If you look at reviews for other models, the trend continues.

Desperate for clear skin? You can try mixing together your own zit zapper balm using coconut oil and tea tree essential oil. Otherwise, keep up with cleansing your face, changing your pillowcase often, and checking in with your dermatologist for suggestions if you have severe acne.

5. Eyelash Curler

I asked my friends for their top pick in this topic, and their resounding response was: "An eyelash curler!" In fact, one of my friends had even injured herself using one, pulling out a chunk of her eyelashes before an important event. I've never used a curler. In fact, I think it looks like some type of medieval torture device, so I just wear plain mascara.

Still crave a bit of curl? Certain cosmetic brands offer curling mascara formulas. You can also use Allure's spoon method and heat a spoon with a mug of warm water, press the curved part onto your lashes, and hold for 10 seconds.

6. Hair Removers

Have you seen those tiny battery-operated hair trimmers meant to clip off unsightly hair from your lip, nose, eyebrows, bikini area, mustache, and more? They're marketed to both men and women, but they're definitely not a must-have in your personal care stash.

Similarly, the no! no! hair removal device looks great in theory. After all, who wouldn't want to remove hair from certain areas for weeks at a time with one easy process at home? The reviews on this product aren't so great. With 54% of buyers giving it just one star and many claiming "false advertising," this is yet another grooming item not worth the cash.

A razor can clean up most of your trouble areas, and tweezers or simple grooming scissors work for much of the rest.

7. Curling Iron, Flat Iron, etc.

If you like to maintain your hair in a certain way (curly, straight, etc.), a single tool of choice might be a good bet. If you like to mix your style up often, you might be surprised to learn that you don't need multiple tools. And between curling irons, flat irons, curling wands, waving tools, etc. — it pays to simplify.

Here's a cool trick: You can use a flat iron to curl hair with some practice. Simply wrap your hair in the flat iron as if you were using a curling iron, but do not close it entirely. You'll want to turn your wrist slightly as your move the tool toward the ends of your hair. Spritz with some hairspray, and you're done!

What beauty or grooming tools have you banished from your bathroom?

This article is from Ashley Marcin of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Find makeup that improves the condition of your skin while helping to perfect it.

You also want to continue protecting your skin from the sun's harmful rays with things like BB creams and tinted sunscreens. Look for moisturizing items that contain SPF and/or antioxidants to protect your skin. Go light on powders or anything that can settle into fine lines. You should also stay away from matte or shimmery eye shadows because they can make skin appear aged and dry. Try dark brown eyeliner over black for a more sophisticated, sultry look. It's also time to trade in any glossy lipsticks for matte. Eyelashes flatten as you age, so you'll also want to invest in a good eyelash curler and lengthening or curling mascara.

For the most youthful, flawless looking skin, you'll want to use foundation, concealer, blush, and highlighters. In fact, celebrity makeup artist, Joanna Schlip, said that highlighters are the secret weapon for women ages 40 and over because they can provide dramatic effects that mimic a facelift. Nowadays, some drugstore cosmetics can stand up to the most expensive luxury brands, all at a fraction of the price. To get you started, we've included some tips to help you create the best makeup kit anyone can afford.

1. Choose the Right Shade

It's crucial that you choose the right shade for your skin. Otherwise, you may end up wasting money on a product that is too pale or dark for your complexion. If you aren't sure which shades are right for you, ask a professional at a store like Sephora, or try a tester bottle on the back of your hand.

2. Return Products You Don't Love

If you bring something home and realize it doesn't match your skin tone or style, don't be afraid to take it back. Many drugstores, department stores, and specialty stores will accept returns, so you're not stuck wasting money on something you'll never wear.

3. Find Your Must-Have Products

There are certain products that a makeup kit just can't do without. For instance, you should look for items that have multiple uses (like Vaseline), and narrow down the rest. Some other things that you need to have in your makeup kit may include:

Concealer

Foundation, or BB or CC cream

Face primer

Powder

Blush

Highlighter

Contour powder

Eyebrow pencil, powder, pomade, or gel

Eyeshadow

Eyeliner

Mascara or false eyelashes

Lipstick, lip liner, or lip gloss

4. Try the $20 Makeup Challenge

Have you heard of the $20 makeup challenge? Some of the most trusted professional makeup artists, beauty bloggers, and everyday beauty mavens are taking part in the challenge to find great drugstore makeup kits for a total cost of only $20 or less. Find someone on Pinterest or YouTube who closely matches your skin tone, complexion, and personal style, and follow their suggestions. You can also browse #20makeupchallenge on social media to see some of the best makeup hauls for $20 or less.

5. Find Top Makeup Artist Picks

There are countless videos and articles highlighting top makeup artist picks for under $20 or $50. We have also found some of the best makeup items in each category, so you can get the most for your money. Read our picks for the best of the following types of makeup:

Concealers

Foundations

Contour powders

BB creams and CC creams

Eyebrow pencils

Mascaras

False eyelashes

Lip liners

Makeup primers

6. Choose the Right Brushes

You don't need to spend a lot to get quality brushes. There are a number of available sets for well under $20, such as Amazon's best-selling makeup brush kit, which includes everything you'll likely need. You can even find deals that include quality makeup brushes and a complexion beauty blender for around $15. If you take care of your brushes and clean them regularly, they will last for years.

7. Take Advantage of Discounts

When shopping at stores like Sephora or Ulta, either online or in-store, make sure to take advantage of all the savings they offer. Look for sales, coupons, promo codes, and store loyalty programs. These can result in discounts, free products, and exclusive store promotions.

8. Try Brand Starter Kits

Choosing starter kits, whenever possible, will allow you to try out many different items from the same brand at a lower cost. This way you can find your favorites, so you always know what to buy without worrying about wasting money. Some of the best starter kits include:

Smashbox Try It Kits – $21.95

Physicians Formula All-in-1 Beauty Balm Kit – $22.31

Physicians Formula Eye Enhancing Kit – $12.35

Tweezerman Mini Brow Rescue Kit – $20.39

9. But sometimes, products are not quite as green as the fancy packaging and ad campaigns would have us believe. Here are eight offenders; beware of their claims, or the implications they are making.

1. Seventh Generation Lemon Dishwashing Gel

Say it isn't so! Seventh Generation is a label synonymous with natural, eco-friendly products. In fact, their mission statement is "To inspire a consumer revolution that nurtures the health of the next seven generations." However, its lemon-scented Dishwashing Gel received an F on the EWG product safety scale, and contains sodium borate and methylisothiazolinone (look it up…it's nasty). It appears that when Seventh Generation states the product is non-toxic, they mean "not acutely toxic." That, in itself, is some very tricky language right there.

2. Aveeno

Aveeno's tagline is "Active Naturals." But look beyond the fancy packaging and use of the word natural, and you will find some very unnatural ingredients. A class action suit filed against Aveeno cited that it used many synthetic ingredients, including glycerine, cetyl alcohol, and sodium hydroxide, on top of things things like petrolatum, mineral oil, and dimethicone. And, the carcinogen 1,4-dioxane is present in Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Creamy Wash. While these ingredients are used widely in the beauty industry, Aveeno is making a play for the green market. And that is not right.

3. Tarte Cosmetics

You will be very impressed with the things the Tarte CEO has to say about the brand: "Today Tarte is a leader in healthy, eco-chic beauty, offering cruelty-free cosmetics infused with skinvigorating ingredients like superfruit and plant extracts, vitamins, minerals, essential oils and other naturally-derived ingredients." Sounds amazing, right?

Tarte products have been found to include crushed beetles (carmine), formaldehyde releasers, parabens, and their Amazonian Clay Illuminating Moisturizer received an EWG toxicity rating of 7/10. Just know exactly what you're buying before you pay extra for something that claims to be green.

4. Huggies Pure & Natural

We all want to make eco-friendly, natural choices when it comes to our children. So when you see Huggies Pure & Natural on the shelf, boasting organic cotton and packaged in green leaf nirvana, you think you're making a sound choice. Well, not so fast.

The University of Cincinnati revealed that the organic cotton used in the diapers is actually only on the outside. The stuff in contact with the baby's skin is what you'd expect to find in any regular diaper, including wood cellulose fiber, polyacrylate, polypropylene, and polyethylene. As of August, a federal class action suit filed against Huggies claims the use of toxic synthetic ingredients, including one that can "strip skin of pigment." And, the diaper is NOT biodegradable — even the packaging is only 20% recycled materials.

5. Coca-Cola Life

The use of a green label on its own is not grounds for a green claim. But when you consider the usual color of Coca-Cola is red, black, or silver, the green is striking. However, Coca-Cola Life is nothing special.

It has 35% less sugar than regular Coke, but adds an artificial sweetener (stevia) to make up for that. And there are still 10 teaspoons of sugar in a 600ml bottle of Coca-Cola Life. All in all, it is a sugary drink packaged in green, and sprinkled with magic marketing dust to make you believe it's a better, greener choice. It's not.

6. American Plastic Lumber

Take a look at American Plastic Lumber's website, and you'll see a logo that screams "eco friendly" in every way. In their About Us section, you'll read a statement on how the company has provided recycled plastic lumber for two decades across the country and beyond.

However, the FTC has brought two cases against APL for false claims. In actuality, their products contain an average of less than 79% post-consumer content. And in some cases, they contained only 15% recycled materials. The company has been very careful with its wording since those cases, but the logo and the implication remains.

7. Lush Cosmetics

Greenwashing is rampant in the cosmetics industry. There are many examples of beauty products that make claims implying an eco-friendly footprint, but Lush is doing it to cover some toxic ingredients.

As Nicole Dunst writes in her greenwashing alert on Lush, "Some of the ingredients they consistently use in their products have consistently been advised against by such respectable organizations as the Environmental Working Group and the American Cancer Society." Those toxic ingredients include sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol, and cocamide DEA (another 7/10 ingredient on the EWG toxicity scale).

8. Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner

This product got into the EWG's cleaner Hall of Shame. Simple Green states that it is both "non-toxic" and "biodegradable," yet contains: 2-butoxyethanol, a solvent absorbed through the skin that damages red blood cells and irritates eyes; and a secret blend of alcohol ethoxylate surfactants, some of which are banned in the European Union. What's more, the product is supposed to be diluted for every use, yet it comes in a spray bottle!

Now, have you had any experiences with green products that were not as eco-friendly as they stated? Please let us all know what to avoid.

This article is from Paul Michael of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Whether you want thicker, fuller brows, or simply want to define your natural brows, an eyebrow pencil can help you achieve your ideal look in no time.

What Is an Eyebrow Pencil?

An eyebrow pencil is a cosmetic item that can define, shape, fill out, and accentuate the eyebrows. It looks like a normal pencil, but instead of lead, it is filled with a pigmented makeup. Beautiful eyebrows can frame the face and will help attract people to your eyes, which is why many women can’t step foot outside without first filling in their brows.

If your eyebrows are too light or sparse, an eyebrow pencil can thicken and fill them in. Even if you like the shape and thickness of your brows, an eyebrow pencil can still help define, shape, and set your eyebrows for all-day wear. You can also add a layer of eyebrow mascara on top of the pencil for extra staying power.

Top 5 Eyebrow Pencils

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz

Anastasia knows brows, and that's why the award-winning Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz is the brand’s bestseller. Most makeup artists swear by the brand, whether you prefer eyebrow pencils, powders, or gels. The super-slim mechanical pencil can be used to outline the overall shape of the brows, fill in sparse areas, or fill in the brows completely. The slim tip can create the perfect precise line with natural, hair-like strokes of color.

While many reviewers use this pencil on their entire brows, others found it best to just outline their brows in this pencil and then fill it in with an eyebrow powder or brow gel for a more subtle, natural look. There is also a spoolie attached to the other end of the pencil, so you can perfectly groom and shape your brows. This is one of the most highly recommended eyebrow pencils by professional makeup artists, celebrities, YouTubers, and beauty bloggers alike.

Currently $24.52 on Amazon

It Cosmetics Brow Power Universal Brow Pencil

If you aren’t sure which eyebrow pencil color is right for your skin tone and hair color, then the It Cosmetics Brow Power Universal Brow Pencil is perfect for you. Fortunately, you don't have to spend a fortune to look like a million bucks. Try these simple, effective ways to save money on beauty, beyond just the coupons and store loyalty programs.

1. Don't Overuse Products

In most cases, a smaller amount of product than you think is enough to get the desired results. For instance, you never need to use more than a nickel-sized amount of shampoo, conditioner, face wash, face moisturizer, or leave-in conditioner. Any more than that, and you're just wasting product (and money). The same goes for makeup; start small and build up your look. Not only will this save you money in the long run, but your lotions and makeup will last longer, so you don't have to replace them as often.

2. Look for Cheaper Alternatives

There is a drugstore dupe for nearly every high-end cosmetic. You can use sites like Dupethat to figure out which cheap alternative matches your favorite color and formula. DIY recipes are also a great alternative to your favorite masks and scrubs, so start looking for free recipes online using ingredients you already have in your kitchen. (See also: 9 DIY Beauty Masks Made From Food)

3. Get More Out of Old Makeup

If your makeup is still unexpired but in bad condition, you can probably breathe new life into it. For instance, by adding four to five eye drops into your mascara tube, it will re-moisturize the dried out wand and formula, making it work like new again. You can also place a closed tube of mascara into a cup of hot water to warm the solution and get a few more uses out it. Just make sure you throw your mascara away after three months of usage.

You can also repair any broken eyeshadow or powder palette by simply reforming it with alcohol.

4. Use Multitasking Ingredients

Multitasking ingredients can save you money, clear space in your travel bag, and actually speed up your morning routine. They can help you get the biggest bang for your buck. Here are three easy ones:

Use oil as a makeup remover;

Try baby powder as dry shampoo; and,

Use lipstick as impromptu blush.

Some of the best multitasking ingredients are oils (like coconut and argan oils), Vaseline, and baby powder.

5. Use Multitasking Products

Multitasking products can help save you money because you can get the results of several products by just using one item. BB cream is the perfect example of a multitasker, because it can replace your sunscreen, serum, moisturizer, anti-aging products, and even your foundation.

Your eyeshadow is another great example because it can also be used as an eyeliner, eyebrow powder, blush, highlighter, or bronzer. Eyeshadow can even be transformed into different shades of lip gloss and nail polish.

6. Return Beauty Items That Don't Work

Most drugstores and beauty stores will gladly accept your return. In fact, many stores (like Walgreens) pride themselves on the ease of their return policy, in the event that a certain shade of lipstick or foundation doesn't work on you. Not every shade or formulation of makeup will work for every person, so don't waste your money if you get home and decide it doesn't look right on you.

7. Buy Splurge Items on Sale

Shopping for beauty products when everything is on sale will make you feel less guilty about your splurge. Certain items, like makeup sets, go on sale after the holidays, which would be a great time to stock up on whatever you think you might need for yourself or for future gifts.

8. Use Every Last Drop

When you're down to the last bit of shampoo, conditioner, lotion, or makeup, it's time to get creative. You can cut the bottle open to scrape out any last bit, use a Q-tip to dig out any leftover foundation, or invest in an affordable beauty spatula so that you never have to throw out another drop. You can also use a damp makeup sponge to cut down on the amount of foundation applied.

9. Use Ebates

Ebates will give you cash back on certain purchases, including beauty buys. For instance, they offer 4% cash back on all Sephora purchases.

10. Take Advantage of Recycling Policies

If you gather up six empty MAC containers, they will recycle them for you and you can even pick out a free lip gloss as payment for your empties. Stores like Lush and Kiehl's offer similar programs.

11. Leave Items in the Online Shopping Cart Overnight

This trick can save you money on any makeup, clothing, or furniture purchases. It doesn't always work, but when it does, you'll be glad you waited the night. By putting items in your cart, but never completing the order, the store thinks you forgot about the items and will often send you an email reminder that you have items in your cart that need to be checked out. They will usually offer a promo code to entice you to complete the purchase, so you can save more on items that you already planning on purchasing.

12. Stop Going to the Salon so Often

DIY hair color, at-home manicures, and homemade face and hair masks are all the rage these days. Take advantage of the never-ending trend and save money in the process. Don't waste your time or money at the salon if you can achieve similar results at home for a fraction of the cost. Many salons will also offer free bang trends or discounted prices on hair trims, so make sure to ask what your salon offers. These are the six beauty blunders everyone makes, and how to avoid them.

1. Poor Lighting

Have you ever put on your makeup and checked the mirror thinking you look great, until you went outside and saw it was all wrong? It's probably because you did your makeup in low or poor lighting. In low wattage light bulbs, the light can be too yellow or bright white, causing you to over-apply foundation or wrongly judge the amount of eyeshadow to wear. Natural light is key to a flawless face.

How to avoid it: Simply apply makeup in front of an open window. Be sure your face is toward the window to avoid backlighting. Failing that, buy a natural light mirror.

2. Skipping Primer

Ever feel like your makeup never settles onto your face in the morning, and by the afternoon, it's all sliding off in an oil slick? That means you're paying the price for skipping primer. Primer not only helps foundation blend onto your skin, it also holds makeup on the skin longer throughout the day. Eye primer is also crucial — it prevents eye creams and shadows from forming interpretive oil paintings by smearing all over your lids.

How to avoid it: Buy both a face primer and an eye primer. While you might want a primer by the same brand(s) as your makeup, both Smashbox and Clinique make great primers.

Bonus tip: If you don't wear full coverage foundation, it's also worth trying a BB cream, which has moisturizer, primer, and foundation tint all in one.

3. Obvious Lip Liner

The '90s trend of visible and darker hued lip liner was popular then, but history has looked back on it unfavorably. Don't draw too hard on the inside or outside of the lines on this one, guys. Not only does it look out of style, but it also makes your mouth look much older.

How to avoid it: Find a lip pencil that matches your lipstick for a fuller, more defined lip. Or, try filling your entire lip with the pencil and finishing with a balm for a softer, more natural look.

4. Scary Eyebrows

Ever feel like your eyebrows are seriously "on fleek?" It's a truly gratifying makeup experience, because eyebrows frame your face. But many people either make their brows far too thin or far too thick in the wrong places. Mistakes happen when you pluck too close to the mirror — it causes you to lose sight of the full face and focus on tiny details of the brow. You want them to look natural. Also, your fill-in color should same shade as your hair or darker.

How to avoid it: Try a stencil from Anastasia and/or use a tried and true eyebrow kit (either wax and pigment powder, or a portable brow pencil) to get the job done instead of free-form brow drawing.

5. Mismatched Face and Neck

Remember in high school, when everyone wore that CoverGirl pressed powder that didn't match anyone's actual skin tone? Let's not repeat those teen mistakes. The best way to make your skin look better is to use a color that matches both your face and neck (and arms and legs). This goes for people of all skintones. Someone brushing on too much bronzer is just as bad as someone painting their face two shades lighter. Remember, if your foundation has an SPF in it, that will leave your face looking much whiter in flash photography.

How to avoid it: Go to the makeup counter at your local department store and have a specialist find a foundation match that works for you. Or, test a foundation yourself in swatches on your face, neck, upper arm, and back of your leg in natural light before committing to it. There are online matching methods too, but they're probably not as accurate.

6. Not Cleaning Your Brushes

Scared of getting another acne outbreak? While hormones and stress may be a factor, we all forget how makeup applicators might be a contributing cause for facial flare-ups. Think of all the times you've wet the tip to pick up color, or all the times you've stuck your finger into a pigment pot to smear directly onto your face. Bacteria is near inescapable. To protect your pores from unnecessary bacteria build up, your face, eye, and lip brushes must be washed.

How to avoid it: Wash brushes once a month in warm water. Use a makeup brush cleaner if you'd like, but shampoo or antibacterial soap is just fine. Sponges should be washed after every use, then thrown out monthly.

What beauty blunders do you make from time to time?

This article is from Amanda Meadows of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Hot temperatures and higher humidity, as well as fun summer activities, can affect your skin, hair, and body. Check out these beauty tips and hacks for the summer.

1. Double Cleanse

The sweat, salt, and sunscreen that accumulate on your skin in the summer can wreak havoc on your complexion. You may need to up your cleansing game in order to keep pores clean. If you haven't tried double cleansing yet, now's a great time to start. In the evening only, cleanse first with an oil-based cleanser (like Clinique's Take the Day Off Balm), and then with a gentle gel or foam cleanser (try Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Cleanser). The oil cleanser will get the gunk out of your pores, and the second cleanser will remove any remaining oil or grime, making your face a fresh canvas for moisturizing.

2. Exfoliate and Moisturize Your Body

With swimsuit weather upon us, you want all that visible skin to be smooth and flawless, right? Once a week, try using a sugar body scrub or an exfoliating cloth (try Salux cloths for a cheap but effective option), and be sure to moisturize afterwards.

For super soft skin, try first slathering on an aloe gel (put it in the fridge first for a refreshing boost), and then a layer of body lotion or cream, like Cerave Moisturizing Cream. Farewell, alligator skin!

3. Protect Yourself From the Sun

You know you should be wearing sunscreen daily during the summer, especially since the sun's rays account for 80% of wrinkles and visible aging, but did you know that you should be reapplying every two hours? The active ingredients in sunscreens break down with sun exposure, or can get rubbed or sweated off, so be sure to slather it on frequently. Also, with the UV index being so much higher in the summer, wear a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

It can be a pain to reapply sunscreen, especially if you're also wearing makeup. Consider wearing a tinted sunscreen instead, like Bare Republic Mineral Tinted Face Sunscreen SPF 30 or Aveeno Positively Radiant CC Cream With Sunscreen, to make reapplying easier.

4. Check Your Sunscreen's Expiration Date

My husband recently went surfing and used an old sunscreen that his friend had found in a closet somewhere. Who knows how old it was. Although he slathered it on and waited the appropriate time before going in the water, he still got bright red within less than two hours. The compounds in sunscreens break down over time, especially in heat and light, so be sure you're using a fresh bottle.

5. Cool Down With a Mist

One of my favorite ways to refresh and cool down during the summer is to spritz myself with a fine facial mist. It not only cools me down, it also delivers extra moisture to my dehydrated skin .

To control oil in the middle of the day without disturbing your makeup, try spraying your face with a facial mist (like Caudalie Grape Water or First Aid Beauty Vitamin Hydrating Mist), and then blotting gently with oil blotting paper.

6. Protect Your Hair Before Swimming

Chlorine can do a number on your hair, leaving it dry, stripped, and lifeless. Protect your hair before going in the pool by massaging leave-in conditioner or a natural oil into your hair (coconut oil works well and is cheap). This will repel the water and prevent your hair from getting dried out. If you don't have time to prep your hair, wetting your locks in the shower and tying up your hair before going in the pool will help it to absorb fewer chemicals. Be sure to shampoo your hair after swimming to remove the chlorine.

7. Switch to a Gel Moisturizer

Warmer temperatures day and night mean that you might not need a heavy moisturizer during the summer. If your usual cream is making your skin feel greasy or weighed down, try switching to a lightweight gel moisturizer such as Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel. Don't skip the moisturizer entirely, though — that's a surefire way to dehydrate your skin.

8. Drink Lots of Water

It goes without saying that you should be drinking lots of water during the hot weather, but an added side benefit of staying hydrated is that your skin will stay brighter and more glowy. Keep a bottle of water handy for on-the-go hydration — for the sake of both your skin and your health.

9. Switch to Cream Blush and Waterproof Eyeliner

Powder blushes wear off quickly when you're swimming and sweating, so in the summer, consider switching to a cream blush, which have better staying power. Plus, who wants to fuss with a compact and brush when you're having fun in the sun? Apply cream blush with your fingertips, blend, and go!

Similarly, you may have to switch your eyeliner to a waterproof formula to prevent it from sliding off your lids. Be sure you have a good eye makeup remover to take it off without scrubbing.

10. Wear a Big Hat

Even the best of us forget to reapply sunscreen, so your next line of defense is a wide-brimmed hat (preferably a crushable one that you can throw into your beach tote). Not only does sun damage cause skin cancer and the majority of visible aging, but it can also cause discoloration and uneven skin tone (and I'm talking about big sun spots, not just cute little freckles). Wear a hat during the hottest part of the day, and your skin will thank you many years down the road.

11. Fake a Tan

With the sunscreen and big hats that you'll be wearing, how will you get that sun-kissed glow? Well, chances are you'll still tan slightly even while wearing sunscreen, but if you want an even, more bronzed look, self-tanner and bronzer are ways to deepen the color of your skin without damaging it or increasing your risk of skin cancer.

12. Invest in Makeup Removing Wipes

Late nights and fireside chats on the beach may end with you falling into bed without washing your face. Minimize the damage by using a makeup removing wipe before bed (keep them on your bedside table, so you'll have no excuse). Bonus if you also keep a moisturizer by your bed to use after you wipe.

13. Lay Off the Acids and Retinoids

AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) such as glycolic acid can make your skin more photosensitive, as can retinol, an ingredient commonly used in anti-aging products. They can exacerbate hyperpigmentation, melasma, and skin discoloration caused by the sun, and can cause you to burn more easily. Check your products for these ingredients and use them only at night, if at all. If you do use them (even only at night), be sure to wear a good facial sunscreen during the day, as AHAs and retinoids can be photosensitizing up to a week after you use them.

14. Shampoo Less Frequently

Shampooing frequently can strip your hair of its natural oils. When combined with UV damage, chlorine, and other environmental stressors, it's a recipe for straw-dry hair. You can go longer between shampoos if you use a dry shampoo to absorb the excess oil. You can also rinse your hair with warm water between shampoos to rinse away excess dirt and grease without fully stripping your hair.

When you do shampoo, use a gentle sulfate-free shampoo that won't be as drying and stripping as harsher shampoos (I actually shampoo my hair with Cerave Foaming Facial Cleanser, a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser meant for the face, which sounds crazy, but my hair has never been healthier and most importantly, my scalp doesn't itch).

15. Avoid Silicone Hair Products

Many hair products, from conditioners to styling products, contain silicone, which coats the strands of hair giving them a temporary smoothing effect. The problem is, silicone also prevents hydrating products from penetrating your hair, leading to dryness. They also attract dirt and make your hair feel greasy, and require a strong shampoo to remove.

Consider giving your hair a break by using a silicone-free conditioner. I like the Honest Co. Conditioner, which contains natural oils and makes my hair super soft without weighing it down. Shea Moisture and Living Proof conditioners are also silicone free.

16. Use a Primer

Summer is prime time (har har) to use a primer that will keep your makeup from sliding off your face. It will also help to fill in pores and fine lines so you can get that flawless look without having to pile on the makeup. I'm personally partial to Smashbox Photo Finish Primer.

17. Skip the Foundation

The last thing you want to worry about during summer R&R is a thick layer of foundation dripping off your face. Lighten up your makeup by using a BB cream, (I like Dr. Jart+ Premium) which combines moisturizer, SPF, and a light foundation in one. If you want to go even lighter, CC creams are designed to even out your complexion without weighing down your skin (try Peter Thomas Roth CC Cream in your correct shade). You can also use a tinted moisturizer or sunscreen for a bit of coverage, or go bare-faced with just touches of concealer and blush.

18. Cool Down With DIY Beauty Treatments

Try a yogurt/honey face mask to soothe a sunburn: blend together half a cup each of whole milk yogurt and honey and slather all over your face. Put your tub of aloe gel in the fridge so it will be nice and cold when you need it. Slice a cool cucumber into rounds and place them on your skin (especially your eyes). Rinse your face with brewed and cooled camomile or green tea to refresh and calm your skin. Clinique Take the Day Off Makeup Remover

Clinique's eye and lip makeup remover is my favorite no-tug eye makeup remover. It just melts everything off without rubbing. This travel size 1.69oz bottle ($10) is easy to throw in your carry-on for all the fun trips you'll be taking this summer and is a great way to try the product out. (Note: I've actually gotten this trial size bottle as a sample for free at Clinique counters before. It doesn't hurt to ask!)

3. Sheet Masks

I'm a huge fan of ultra-moisturizing sheet masks for delivering a concentrated punch of hydration to your skin. They're perfect for moisturizing and brightening before a big event, and they're very affordable. Try Dr. Jart Water Replenishment Mask, one of my favorites, for $7.50, Karuna Brightening Face Mask for $8, TONYMOLY I'm Real Mask Sheet for $4–$9, or Mizon Ampoule Essential Sheet Mask for $4.33–$8.50.

4. Sonia Kashuk Creme Blush

The Sonia Kashuk brand collaboration with Target is a great source for good quality cosmetics at affordable prices. The Sonia Kashuk creme blush gives a great natural finish for around $7–$9.79, a third of the price of many higher-end brands, with comparable quality.

5. Pacifica Coconut Water Cleansing Wipes

These gentle, vegan, all-natural Pacifica cleansing wipes are perfect for those days you want to just fall into bed, and don't have the energy to go through an entire cleansing routine. This $6.95 package of wipes is free of harsh surfactants and includes naturally exfoliating papaya enzymes, leaving your skin soft and not dried out.

6. Boscia Makeup-Breakup Cleansing Oil

I love using emulsifying oils to remove makeup. This travel size Boscia cleansing oil ($10) removes your makeup and rinses clean, leaving your skin soft and refreshed. This small size is enough for you to determine if it's really a product you like and is a great way to try an oil cleanser if you've never taken the leap.

7. As I Am Coconut Cowash

Have you tried cleansing conditioners yet? These specially formulated conditioners cleanse your hair and scalp without stripping your hair of its moisture and natural oils. If you find that regular shampoo is drying out your hair, a "cowash" (cleansing conditioner) like As I Am Coconut Cowash ($6.79) might help.

8. Pixi Fairy Dust

I love Pixi's innovative cosmetic products. The Fairy Dust eyeshadow, for $10, is a unique powder eyeshadow that you apply with a sponge applicator. It wears well, is foolproof to apply, and feels super light.

9. Zoya Nail Polish

I really love Zoya's vegan, natural, colorful nail polishes. Although they are "5-Free," free of five toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde resin, toluene, and others, Zoya's nail polishes are also easy to apply and long lasting. At $8.87, they cost a bit more than most drugstore nail polishes, but are still definitely affordable.

10. Ecotools Bamboo Brush Set

At about $9, this compact set of Ecotools brushes is a great starter or travel set. Ecotools' bamboo brushes have a reputation for being high quality but very affordable.

11. Konjac Sponge

These soft, all-natural, facial cleansing sponges have been exploding in popularity lately. Used with a bit of foaming cleanser, they create a rich lather and are perfect for gently cleansing and exfoliating your skin. You can find various brands of konjac sponges ranging from $1 to $20, but your best bet is a mid-range brand like My Konjac Sponge, $10.

12. Honest Co. Conditioning Mist

We're big fans of The Honest Company at our house: the whole family uses the sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner daily. Recently, I've really loved using the Honest Co. Conditioning Mist ($5.99) both on myself and my daughter. It's perfect for detangling, taming flyaways, and giving soft texture to the hair without weighing it down. The ingredient list contains some great natural ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, quinoa protein, and few fillers. It also smells delicious.

13. SheaMoisture Argan Oil and Raw Shea Hand and Body Scrub

SheaMoisture products tend to have great ingredient lists and the argan oil body scrub ($10) is no exception. This luxurious body scrub leaves your skin super smooth and moisturized, and the ingredient list contains quality oils and few fillers (the top four ingredients are sugar, shea butter, safflower oil, and argan oil).

14. Ipsy Glam Bag

For $10 a month, you can subscribe to the Ipsy Glam Bag, a beauty subscription service that sends you a bag full of deluxe samples (and sometimes full size items) up to $50 in value. It's a great way to sample some brand name items without paying full price. If you find you're constantly making impulse buys at the makeup counter just to try something new, perhaps you'd be willing to contain your habit to the monthly Ipsy bag and save some money.

15. Birchbox

Ipsy's main competitor, Birchbox, also offers a monthly beauty subscription box for $10. Like Ipsy, it offers a great way to sample brand name products at a low price. It tends to offer more skincare products than Ipsy, which focuses on makeup.

What's your favorite affordable brand name product?

This article is from Camilla Cheung of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. It's safe to say I don't know a lot about makeup. But, I do know someone who does. I recently spoke to Angela Wade, a freelance makeup artist who has been in the business for over 12 years. She shared some makeup hacks that she uses to make life a little easier, and to make her supplies last a little longer. I also talked with some of the other ladies in my life, young and old, and hit up the users of Reddit to compile this following list of makeup hacks.

1. Remove Makeup With Cold Cream

You can spend a fortune on "specially formulated" makeup removers, that come in small bottles, wipes, or very expensive jars. And yet, cold cream works better than all of them. Get yourself a jar of Pond's Cold Cream (a 9.5 ounce jar is less than $8 on Amazon) and use it to remove everything from foundation and lip tars, to waterproof mascara and even special effects grade makeup. It will also leave your skin moisturized without feeling oily, and one jar will last you a whole year!

2. Make Gel Eyeliner Last Longer

Gel or cream eyeliners can quickly dry out, but that doesn't mean you should throw them out. To rehydrate your eyeliner, add a small amount of eye drop liquid, such as Visine or Clear Eyes. Then, thoroughly mix it into the eyeliner until you get an even consistency. You can use the same hack on dried-out mascara; however, please bear in mind that your mascara should be thrown away after three months of use.

3. Repair Broken Eyeshadow

Eye shadows can become cracked and broken over time, but there's no need to toss them out. They can be repaired quickly and easily. Simply apply a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to the powder and form it back into its original flat shape. Let it dry completely for a few days, and you will find that your eye shadow is as good as new.

4. Make Tired Eyes Appear Whiter and Brighter

All it takes is a touch of blue; in this case, blue eyeliner. By applying a bold blue eyeliner closely to the eyelash line, you create the illusion that the whites of your eyes are both whiter and brighter. This instantly makes you look more awake and refreshed, which can be handy the morning after a night on the town. You can achieve a similar effect with a navy eyeliner, although it won't be as pronounced.

5. Create a DIY Tinted Moisturizer

Redditor Fightsactualfoo (love that name) discovered that she could create a tinted moisturizer guaranteed to match her own skin tone, simply by mixing a pump of Cetaphil lotion with a pump of her foundation. The benefits, other than the perfect skin tone match, are that it reduces the chance of having a breakout, and eliminates the need to buy yet another makeup product.

6. Make Dry Skin Look Luminous

A great way to improve the appearance of your skin is to make your very own skin refreshing mist. You can buy one of these "hydrating mists" off the shelf, but if you want the best results, try the following recipe. Start with MAC Cosmetics Prep & Prime Fix, then mix with a vitamin C brightening solution (MAC's Lightful C Marine-Bright Softening Lotion is good, though a bit pricey) and an essential oil, like grapefruit or lavender. Once applied, it will give a wonderfully incandescent luster to your skin throughout the day.

7. Turn Eyelash Adhesive Invisible

No one wants to see your eyelash adhesive. However, there is a simple hack to make it completely invisible. Before applying it, add some black eyeliner into the white eyelash adhesive, and mix thoroughly. When it dries, there will be no white line or film left on the lash.

8. Create Your Own Gel Liner

As you know, gel liners can be expensive. But, there is a simple trick you can use on a cheap Kohl pencil eyeliner that can turn it something that flows much easier, darker, and thicker, like gel. Hold the pencil over the flame of a lighter for just one second, and then let it cool down for 15 seconds. When you apply it, you'll see the difference.

9. Make Eyelashes Appear Much Thicker

Plenty of mascara products on the market promise to give you thicker, fuller lashes, but there is a simple hack you can use without having to spend any money on them. Simply apply a coat of translucent powder to your lashes in between coats. The powder will thicken the drying product, allowing the second or third coat of mascara to adhere better. This results in beautifully thick and full lashes.

10. Blend Eyeshadow Like a Pro

Professional makeup artists can create beautifully blended eyes, and yet the results we achieve at home can often look muddy or over blended. There is a simple trick to make sure your eye shadow is seamlessly blended…go down, not up. Start under the brow with your lightest shade and work your way down to the crease color. Continue to the eyelid, blending as you go. Doing it this way allows for placement of color whilst you are still blending, avoid that muddy or overdone look.

11. Remove Glitter Nail Polish Quickly

I found this hack after trying for about five minutes to remove sparkly nail polish from my girls' nails. Being a good dad, I paint their nails on weekends, but who knew glitter polish is harder to remove than chewing gum from hair?! It turns out that a simple coat of Elmer's glue before you apply the polish makes it very easy to remove, once the time comes. It just peels off!

12. Make Smoky Eyeshadow Last Longer

By using eyeliner underneath your dark eyeshadow, you will get better hold and much more opacity. If you've got some items rolling around in your makeup drawer that you rarely use or are long expired, then you might be surprised at what else you can do with them. Put the following items to good use, and save yourself some serious coin.

1. Mascara Wand as an Eyebrow Brush

Mascara should be thrown away every few months since bacteria and eyes just don't mix. There's a good chance you've got a bottle lying around past its prime, but luckily there's another use for the wand. Wipe off as much mascara as possible and wash well with soapy water for a great eyebrow brush. You can use it the exact same way to comb and shape eyebrows, and greatly extend the life of your mascara wand.

2. Eyeshadows as Paint

Most everyone goes through an eyeshadow phase where you end up buying every color imaginable. And most everyone ends up finding a few select colors that they regularly wear, if they wear any at all. What to do with all of that extra eye shadow? Make it into paint! You'll just need a bit of white paint and textile medium to transform your eyeshadows into a bright, brushable craft supply. Crush up your chosen color, mix it with the other ingredients, and paint a masterpiece.

3. Hairspray as a Stain Remover

It's a weird trick, but hairspray is mighty good at removing grease and oil stains. Spray hairspray on the stain until saturated and let sit for a few minutes. Dab with a damp cloth to help lift the stain, and then wash the garment to remove any residue. It even works on pesky lipstick stains.

4. Translucent Powder as Dry Shampoo

If you're running low on dry shampoo but your hair desperately needs a touch up, use translucent face powder. Tap a small amount onto the roots of your hair and work in with your clean fingers, a powder brush, or a combination of both. Be sure to hold your head over a sink to catch any excess. It's great for quick touch-ups just around the face with a brush.

5. Clear Nail Polish as a Sealant

Clear nail polish is the superstar of the makeup drawer multi-taskers. It works really well as a sealant, protecting whatever you're painting with a clear coating. Try applying a coat to items with metal bottoms that could rust on your counter or in the shower, like shaving cream. Paint a coat on your cheap costume jewelry to keep them from chipping or leaving green marks on your skin. And apply over small rhinestones on low-cost jewelry or sunglasses to keep them from falling out. You can also use it to waterproof small things, keep frayed items from unraveling, and simplify threading a needle.

6. Make-Up Brushes as Craft Brushes

Your powder, blush, eyeshadow, and eyeliner brushes need to be cleaned regularly to stave off bacteria. This is especially true for anything that's going near your eyes. After a while, you should replace your brushes and swap with new ones. Rather than simply tossing the brushes, give them a new life as craft brushes. Use for paint, glue, glitter, and more. Use liner brushes to apply small amounts of glue to delicate items or paint detail work. A thin eyeliner brush is also great for painting on fun nail art.

7. Makeup Remover as a Cleaner

Makeup remover isn't just good at removing makeup, it's good at removing stains, too. Use remover to clean up makeup mishaps on wood, vanities, floors, and more. It also works as a gentle cleaner on hands and many other surfaces with oil or wax-based stains. Spot test your makeup remover before using, but most are non-abrasive since they are safe to use on your face.

What other makeup tool hacks do you employ? And while there are formal rules — the laws and regulations that govern many of the things we can and can't do — there are lots of informal rules that are often just as hard to break. Some of these rules make sense. Some of them are just stupid convention. And some of them are made to be broken. I think rules that dictate how you should look should probably be thrown into the latter category.

After all, while there are some instances where looking "the part" matters (and you should probably care), in most cases, following beauty "rules" too closely will just leave you chumped, broke, and no more beautiful than when you started. In fact, I'd say that most beauty rules are worth breaking simply because they assume that "beautiful" is a specific look at all. However, a few rules really get my goat. Here are six beauty rules you should be breaking.

1. Rule: Lose Weight

If fashion magazine covers — not to mention the celebrities we hold up as "beautiful" — are any indication, the best way to be more beautiful is just to be thinner. Simple as that. The key to amazing beauty is a smaller butt. Now that you know, you can set the rest of your lunch aside and move on to the business of being prettier. And...hungrier. And grouchier. Now that's a hot look. If you want to be fitter and healthier, you'll definitely feel — and look — better. But don't get sucked into the idea that beauty only comes in a certain size. It doesn't.

2. Rule: Follow the Season's Trends

Fashion is a fickle thing. One minute you look totally cutting edge; the next thing you know, you look totally bizarre. Fashion is an industry and coming up with brand-new looks each and every year is a way to sell clothes. This isn't to say that all your clothes need to be drab and utilitarian. What it does mean is that you should pick and choose any new additions to your closet very carefully. So, instead of choosing what's "in" this season, find a new element or two from the season that you both really like, and that suits you well. Clothes that make you feel good and look great on your body type have a much longer shelf life. Making that the criteria for choosing new clothes will help you avoid regrettable purchases — or getting stuck with a pair of terribly unflattering "mom jeans" or uncomfortable platform sneakers. You'll also be liberated from having to keep up with current trends.

3. Rule: Look Younger

According to popular wisdom, looking younger is equivalent to looking more beautiful. Of course, this implies that each and every year you're getting uglier and uglier (particularly if you've passed the age of 40). When you consider that most people now live into their 80s and beyond, we're all looking at a very long road of aesthetic decline. I guess you could spend a fortune on hair dye and wrinkle creams (most of which don't do a thing) while trying to achieve the impossible. Or, you could take good care of yourself and look your age. Your choice.

4. Rule: Don't Wear _____ With/Before/After _____

There are lots of beauty rules that follow this formula. Don't wear white after Labor Day. Don't pair a bright lipstick with bold eye makeup. Don't put mascara on your bottom lashes. Don't wear this color or that color if you have this or that hair color. But let's be serious: What will happen if you do? Will the world erupt into chaos and mass rioting? Or will most people simply fail to notice your "faux pas" and go on with their day? I think you get my drift. Although you may have to bite the bullet when it comes to dressing for work, for the most part, you should dress and make yourself up in a way that pleases you.

5. Rule: Buy _____

Have you ever noticed that a lot of beauty rules involve buying something? Whether it's a skin cream or makeup or a new haircut, be wary of rules that cost you. After all, beauty isn't just a characteristic — it's also an industry. We all need a few products to keep ourselves clean and well-groomed, but a lot more than that tends to deliver ever diminishing returns. Know where to draw the line.

6. Rule: Assume That You Aren't (Beautiful)

The problem with most beauty rules is that they assume that you, as you are right now, aren't beautiful. The problem is that we often assume that the word "beautiful" refers to physical attractiveness. In actual fact, it's defined as "possessing qualities that give great pleasure or satisfaction to see, hear, think about, etc." Chances are that not everyone will like your style or find you attractive. But when you look at beauty more broadly, it's easy to break all kinds of stupid beauty rules. You don't have to have the right hair or clothes or shape to be beautiful. You just have to have qualities that other bring pleasure to other people. Now there's a rule worth living by.

What beauty rules do you ignore?

This article is from Tara Struyk of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Thankfully, these awesome beauty buys are all under $20, helping to stretch my product dollars a little further. Some of the following products are from brands that are staples at department and beauty stores, while others are from lesser-known, but high quality up-and-coming brands.

1. The Original BeautyBlender

The BeautyBlender, a tapered, egg-shaped sponge, will revolutionize your makeup application, allowing for perfect blending and a smooth finish to your foundation or BB cream. The patented sponge material doesn't absorb too much product, and can be used dry or damp to optimize application. The tapered tip is perfect for getting into those hard-to-reach areas such as around the eyes and nose. I've tried other BeautyBlender imitators, and few of them come close to the real thing. They either absorb too much product or just don't feel comfortable in the hand. Retailing around $19.95, it's a reasonably affordable way to get the look of flawless skin.

2. Stila Stay-All-Day Waterproof Liquid Liner

Stila's liquid eyeliner has been a mainstay in the beauty industry and has long been considered one of Stila's highest quality products. Priced at $20, the felt-tip liner pen produces a smooth, precise line, that stays put all day whether you're attending a wedding or off-roading in the desert.

3. Benefit Boi-ing Concealer

Benefit's heavy-duty Boi-ing concealer is effective for concealing dark circles, redness, and pretty much anything else on your face. It has tremendous sticking power with minimal creasing, especially under the eyes. It can go on a little thick, which is both a strength and a weakness — it's great at concealing blemishes, but needs to be blended out well to prevent caking. If you're looking for an industrial-strength concealer, Benefit's Boi-ing might be the one, for $20.

4. Lorac PRO Eyeshadow Palette (Trio)

Lorac's super-pigmented eyeshadows top the list of beauty favorites everywhere. The finely-milled eyeshadows apply smoothly with plenty of color. The Lorac PRO Trio Palette is a great way to try the brand at only $15. It includes three complementary colors so you can build multiple looks, from natural to dramatic smoky eyes.

5. Real Techniques Makeup Brushes

So you love the look of professionally applied makeup but can't afford the cost of professional makeup brushes? Luckily, Real Techniques makeup brushes have a reputation for being excellent quality brushes at reasonable prices. Created by makeup artist and YouTube guru Samantha Chapman, the brushes are a favorite of makeup artists, beauty bloggers, and amateur makeup fans alike. The Core Collection Set or the Starter Set retail at about $18 each, and their other popular brushes, such as the blush brush and powder brush, sell for under $10.

6. Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Mascara

Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara is one of eco-beauty brand Tarte's bestselling products. It creates long, lush lashes that last all day without clumping or flaking. Those with sensitive eyes will appreciate the lack of irritating ingredients and harsh chemicals in the formula, and the addition of olive esters which are supposed to condition your lashes. You can find it for around $20.

7. Everyday Minerals Powder Foundation

For sensitive skin, mineral makeup can be a great option, creating a natural finish without irritating the skin. Everyday Minerals is a lesser-known brand that produces an excellent powder mineral foundation, rivaling more expensive brands, but without the markup. I dislike the look of heavy makeup, and the mineral powder effectively covers any flaws but still looks natural. A jar of their mineral foundation costs a mere $14. Order a free sample kit to make sure you get the right shade (you just pay a reasonable shipping fee).

8. Missha All Around Safe Block Sun Milk

I would argue that the most important part of your beauty routine is your sunscreen. Sun damage is the primary cause of premature aging and skin discoloration, not to mention skin cancer. I've always avoided putting sunscreen on my face because most sunscreens made my face sticky and clogged my pores. That is, until I found Missha All Around Safe Block Sun Milk, a sun "essence" that absorbs quickly, doesn't leave a white cast, and is absolutely non-sticky, all while providing SPF 50 broad spectrum coverage. It sits so perfectly under makeup, you won't even know it's there.

Missha is one of the most recognized and popular cosmetic brands in Korea, and luckily for us, they have a stateside web presence where you can pick up this facial sunscreen for $18.

9. Dr Jart+ Water Replenishment Sheet Mask

Have you ever used a sheet mask? These convenient little packets contain a cotton mask soaked in a hydrating serum. You unfold the mask, place it on your face, and let the serum soak into your skin. It's a hydration bomb in 20 minutes, and is perfect for those days that you need a little extra glow. Dr Jart+ makes some of the best sheet masks I have ever tried. If you ever need to rescue dehydrated skin, pick up the Dr Jart+ Water Replenishment Mask. While $7.50 seems a bit pricey for a one-use mask, your skin will thank you (and it's cheaper than a facial!). You can also make it go further by rubbing the excess serum onto your neck, arms, and legs.

10. Amara Organics Vitamin C Serum

Out of all my beauty products, vitamin C has done the most in giving me not just the appearance of, but actual flawless skin. Vitamin C is one of very few ingredients in the cosmetics world that has been proven to help in reducing wrinkles, evening out dark spots, reducing blemishes, and generally producing a brighter and younger-looking complexion. The most potent form of vitamin C is L-ascorbic acid, and its most effective concentration is 20% — and that's what you have in Amara Organics Vitamin C Serum for the affordable price of $17.95.

This serum is chock full of beneficial ingredients, including vitamin E, which helps to moisturize your skin and boosts the effectiveness of the vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid, a proven humectant that binds water to your skin. They are the first beauty items that I got to pick out at the store myself and experimented with.

Sadly, the beauty product industry is constantly changing, taking items off the market and replacing them with new ones. Some of my favorites have disappeared off the shelf over the years, leaving me remembering the good old days of the following six products.

1. Revlon Street Wear

If any one line of cosmetics could truly sum up the '90s, it would be Street Wear. Revlon's teen-targeted line included lip colors and liners, eye shadows, mascaras, and nail polish in a colorful but grunge-friendly palate. There were lots of mauve and brown lipsticks, brightly colored nails, and everything glossy, glittery, and frosted. Basically, everything you'd need to be the unofficial ruler of your high school. The product line re-launched in India with different branding and products, but has long been defunct in the U.S. With '90s fashion back in vogue, why not revive this well-loved piece of the '90s look?

2. Caboodles Lip Gloss

Believe it or not, Caboodles still exist in a few forms, although I could argue that they just aren't the same. The Caboodles lip gloss, however, bit the dust long ago. I don't think I knew a single girl who had a Caboodle and didn't have their lip gloss stashed inside. One version came on a key ring for oh-so-convenient carrying, and another came in a tube that fit nicely into the top deck of your Caboodle. The lip gloss was shimmery and thick, and came in flavors like "Orange U Lucky" and "Fruitopian." If they were lovingly revived today, they'd be a guaranteed hit with young girls that are starting to get into makeup.

3. Bottled Emotion Perfumes

Bonne Bell was famous for their Lip Smackers and Lip Lix chapstick, but I loved their line of Bottled Emotion perfumes. They each came in a different bright color, and the scents were named after different emotions. So whether you were feeling Daring, Shy, or Playful, you could be appropriately scented. They also came in small, lipstick-shaped bottles that were easy to stick in your Caboodle or in one of your many overalls pockets. They were the perfect beauty products for teens: cheap, colorful, and appealing to their many, uncontrollable emotions.

4. Body on Tap

Lots of wacky things happened in the '70s, and not least of them is beer shampoo. The brand Body on Tap boasted beer as an ingredient, and claimed to provide big body and hold. Plus, it has the unspoken feature of attracting beer-loving men to its light beer scent. Whether they used the shampoo or not, many people may remember their line of sudsy commercials. With beer being as popular as ever, how does this shampoo not still exist? Beer lovers want to know!

5. Naturistics Lip Balm

Who can forget the pretty little glass jars of Naturistics Lip Balm? The tops twisted off to reveal a cross between lip gloss and balm, perfect for everyday wear. They came in lots of flavors, such as Watermelon, Cherry Vanilla, and Bubble Gum. They also offered simpler, more sophisticated flavors like Cool Mint and Vanilla (which I wore). And don't forget their Sweet Lips line of tube lip gloss, whose packaging looked exactly like a small tube of watercolor paint. I used these lip glosses constantly, and the cute packaging made it feel like a treat. Plus, it tasted good. Not that I was eating my lip gloss…

5. Gap Fragrances

Although you can still get a buy a few scents at the Gap Factory stores from time to time, the Gap fragrance line is largely gone. More importantly, the original scents — Grass, Earth, Day, and Heaven — are no longer available. These light, unisex scents popped up in the mid-'90s, and were worn by high schoolers everywhere. You can still find mourners all over the Internet, saddened by the loss of their favorite scent. Grass was divisive, but fiercely loved by some (and hated by others, like me).

6. Hair Stamper

Don't worry, you can still buy a hair crimper. But the hair stamper, a flat iron that "stamped" shapes into your hair, has gone the way of the dinosaurs. The contraption, made my Conair with the model name "Impressions," had interchangeable plates in heart, star, and zig-zag patterns. It actually seems like a pretty bad idea — wouldn't it damage your hair? And how do you keep the shapes whole, since hair is made up of lots of different hairs that move? It seems like it would have looked ridiculous, but that doesn't stop me from wishing it was still around. I'm dying to try the heart shapes for my next Valentine's 'do.

Any beauty products we missed that you're particularly nostalgic for?

This article is from Laurel Randolph of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. A great place to start is with your makeup drawer, because chances are you have a few things that need to be tossed.

When going through beauty products, be sure to keep shelf life in mind as well as the impact on the environment and your health. For these reasons, the following seven products are an easy toss.

1. Old Mascara

If you've got tubes of mascara rolling around in your drawer that are more than four months old, toss them. Mascara is the cosmetic with the shortest shelf life, and chances are you've got one that is past its prime. Because it is used so close to the eye, it's a breeding ground for bacteria. You increase your chances of an eye infection or conjunctivitis by using old mascara, so switch it out with a new bottle every three to six months. The same rule applies to liquid eye liner.

2. Toxic Nail Polish

Take a look at your nail polish bottles and consider if they need to go. Are they several years old? Has the color separated? Is the texture lumpy? Toss them out. Then do a little research about the bottles you have left. Do they contain the "toxic trio" of chemicals? The trio includes formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, and DBP and toluene, two reproductive toxins. These chemicals have been banned in several other countries, but not in the U.S. A backlash led to many brands going toxic-free, but a recent study shows that a number of brands still contain the harmful chemicals. Make sure the polish in your drawer is, in fact, free of these three toxins.

3. Anti-Aging Products

Many anti-aging skincare products boast alpha and beta hydroxy acids as key ingredients, and praise their ability to give a refreshed look to your skin. Unfortunately, these acids may be doing more harm than good. Products with these ingredients increase the skin's sensitivity to UV rays, contributing to skin damage and making us more susceptible to skin cancer. Alpha and beta hydroxy acids are now present in over 10% of moisturizers and, oddly enough, 6% of sunscreens. Check your products for these ingredients, and wear sun protection daily to reduce sun damage and keep your skin youthful.

4. Used Sponges

If you use sponges to apply foundation, concealer, or other products, then throw out used sponges at least once a week. If your sponges are of high quality, you can wash them weekly, but don't hold on to them for more than a few months. Anything that comes into contact with your skin on a regular basis is bound to grow bacteria, and could cause skin problems when used repeatedly.

5. Eyeshadow With Aluminum Powder

Eyeshadows and some pencils that are highly pigmented can contain aluminum powder, which the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has deemed a hazardous substance. The FDA has restricted its use, but only in lip products. Concerns linger over skin absorption and neurotoxicity, so better safe than sorry. Check the ingredients of your eye makeup and toss those that contain aluminum powder.

6. Face and Body Scrubs

Scrubs are a refreshing way to polish away dead skin and keep your face and body soft and smooth. But before you scrub up, check the ingredients. Plastic microbeads used in many scrubs are known to be terrible for the environment. Microbeads end up in lakes and oceans, and marine life cannot distinguish between the tiny plastic beads and food. Fish end up ingesting the plastics, along with any toxic chemicals they have absorbed. Many major companies have promised to stop using the beads, but warn that it will take several years to phase them out. Check your scrubs for plastic microbeads, and when purchasing opt for scrubs that use all-natural exfoliants.

7. Lipsticks With Lead

There has been a long, heated debate about whether lead in lipstick poses a threat to the wearer's health. The FDA has long claimed that the amounts are so small that they are perfectly safe to wear on a regular basis. Other groups have raised concerns over repeat exposure and its compounding effect. This issue is still being studied and discussed, but in the meantime, there are many lead-free lipsticks on the market. If your lipstick contains lead, you may want to consider trashing it, especially if you kiss your kids with that mouth.

Do you have any of these iffy makeup products in your cosmetics drawer?

This article is from Laurel Randolph of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
