In its 2015 Strategic Benefits Survey, the Society found that 69% of human resources professionals reported that their companies offered some type of wellness program. A total of 52% of companies responding to the survey said that employee participation in these programs increased in 2014. There are powerful reasons why more and more companies are doing so — they’re seeing the astounding benefits wellness programs have on their employees, and as a result, on their bottom lines.

Wellness Programs Help Employees Be More Productive

If you're healthy, you'll be more productive. At least that's the thinking of the country's most progressive employers. According to the Division of Population Health and Workplace Health Promotion of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wellness programs can actually make employees more productive. They take fewer sick days and are more engaged and motivated when at the office. It's not surprising that companies that offer wellness perks continue to do so, and even expand their offerings.

Wellness Programs Save Employers Money

Companies pay less in insurance and workers compensation costs during the year when they offer robust wellness programs, the CDC says. Healthier employees are more alert and careful, preventing accidents and other dangerous incidents. Not only that, but a program that allows employees to get checkups and screenings to monitor their health will be less expensive than treatments after things get serious.

Wellness Programs Retain Talented Workers

These programs affect retention and recruitment, too. The CDC reports that companies that offer perks such as gym memberships, weight-loss programs, and health assessments attract, and keep the most talented employees. That’s not surprising since workers report that benefits, especially ones that contribute to their health and wellbeing, give them a sense of trust and loyalty to their company.

Wellness Programs Boost Company Earnings

A study published in the January issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found hard evidence that employee wellness programs benefitted not just workers, but companies. The study tracked the stocks of 45 publicly traded companies that offered robust health and wellness programs from 2009 through 2014. According to the study, the stock of these companies appreciated 235% during this time compared with an appreciation rate of 159% for S&P 500 companies in general.

Supplemental Insurance Adds Peace of Mind

To help support employees during a covered illness that wellness programs can’t prevent, supplemental insurance can be an integral solution to the rising costs of out-of-pocket expenses for health care. Rather than pay high premiums or make employees bear the burden of high deductibles, specialized supplemental insurance can help alleviate costs to both the employer and employee.

For all these reasons, it’s clear that wellness programs that promote health and wellbeing in employees benefit the employers as much (or more) than the workers themselves. It should be powerful motivation for any company to look into offering or even expanding their health and wellness benefits.

This article is from Dan Rafter of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Rather, a cool smoothie bowl, with fruit, nuts, and grains, sounds much better. The prices, though, when buying them, gives me sticker shock. How about making your own smoothie bowls?

Here is the basic concept for the smoothie bowl, in case you haven't tried one yet.

Your smoothie is made a little thicker, either by not adding as much liquid, or by adding other ingredients (avocado, banana, nut butters, etc.) to make it thicker. Think "spoonable." Toppings are then added, which usually consist of sliced fruits, seeds, nuts, grains, granola, and maybe some small sweets like cacao nibs or flaked coconut. Like a lunchtime power bowl, they are usually artfully concocted, so that they look decorative and appealing. This time in prep, plus the sometimes expensive toppings, are what drive those high take-out smoothie bowl prices. Here are 12 delicious, healthy, and frugal smoothie bowls that you can make right at home.

1. Healthy "Peach Pie"

This peach pie smoothie bowl reminded me of summertime at my aunt's house, where we'd eat fresh peaches with cream at breakfast. You don't need fresh peaches, though, for this bowl. In fact, frozen ones work better when making a smoothie. To keep things frugal, check your pantry for nuts before you buy more, as most nuts have a shelf life of less than a year.

2. Peanut Butter and Banana

Bananas are one of the most inexpensive fruits to buy. When on sale, buy extras, slice, and freeze. You'll be glad you did when you want to try this peanut butter and banana bowl. To keep it more frugal, skip the chia seeds, which are expensive, and use your favorite nuts.

3. Creamsicle Bowl

Remember cxreamsicles, or "Fifty-Fifty" bars? I still love those things. Try making a creamsicle bowl, smoothie-style! I love this recipe because this is all stuff I have around the house, so I can easily satisfy a "popsicle" craving with something much healthier.

4. Healthy "Apple Pie"

Apples are another wallet-friendly fruit, and they keep well, so you'll want to bookmark this apple pie smoothie bowl. I substituted granola in place of the rolled oats; it was delicious. Keep it even more frugal and learn to make your own Greek yogurt. (I make my own, and it's simple, and so much cheaper.)

5. Blackberry Bowl

One of my favorite berries are combined here with shredded coconut in this blackberry smoothie bowl. Although expensive in grocery stores, you can forage for free! In summertime, go berry picking, then wash and freeze. Berries freeze very well. Or, look for a U-Pick farm and take your kids along.

6. Green Smoothie

My friend Chuck drinks a green smoothie every day (and he did lose a lot of weight). It gets a little boring, though, so he was glad that I shared this recipe for a green smoothie bowl. Keep it frugal: Buy your spinach in a bunch, and wash/dry it yourself, rather than buying the "prewashed" in the small bags.

7. Carrot Cake

I love carrot cake, but it is usually really fattening (which seems so wrong). Good news, because this carrot cake smoothie bowl has the flavors — but it is so much healthier. The spices (cinnamon, ginger, cloves) are spot-on for carrot cake flavor, and the toppings seal the deal.

8. Chocolate and Fiber

I loved the ingenuity here of combining oats and quinoa for more fiber and texture in this healthy chocolate smoothie bowl. To keep it easy, make a larger batch of the porridge so that you have it on hand.

9. S'Mores

Kids love these s'mores smoothie bowls, and so do big kids, like me. Using yogurt instead of ice cream keeps the calorie count down, a little.

10. Oat, Coconut, and Banana

This is another recipe I love because the ingredients are things I have on hand. I can whip up an oat, coconut, and banana smoothie bowl at the drop of a hat. However, I must confess: I did not use a vanilla bean. Just toss in a quarter teaspoon of vanilla extract. (Sorry, Martha.) I also like that this is not overly sweet, unless you use a lot of syrup.

11. Cherry Bowl

Cherries were on sale today at the market, and so I grabbed a bag, hoping that I could find a smoothie bowl recipe to suit. As luck would have it, yesterday I bought a bag of cacao nibs. What a glorious combination in this dark cherry smoothie bowl! My husband and I ate it for dessert. What a treat.

Tips for keeping your costs down: Watch for fruit to go on sale. Chia seeds are really expensive, so if you have a friend who also loves to use them, consider splitting a package of them. Don't limit yourself to the type of nuts in a recipe. Use what you have, or what you need to use up. Experiment!

What's your favorite smoothie bowl?

Like this article? I mean, since when did being nice ever get you rich?

But there is good news out there for those of us who still like to see the nice guy win once in-awhile. In fact, gratitude has a number of direct impacts on financial well being.

Gratitude Makes You Happy

Gratitude has been shown to make people happier — and happiness is known to have a positive impact on earnings.

In research, groups were asked to keep journals over an extended period, either simply writing down neutrally what had happened to them, or trying to find the positives to be grateful for. At the end of the study, the gratitude group were 25% happier than the neutral group, and reported fewer physical illnesses over the period.

A different study links happiness and earnings, with research which shows that adolescents who report higher levels of happiness go on to earn more as adults. There are probably a wide range of reasons for this — happier people take fewer sick days, build more positive relationships, and are able to focus more on the things that matter to them.

Gratitude Stops Spending

If excessive consumption is your downfall, then try practicing a little gratitude to get back on track.

Instead of lusting after another gadget or handbag, make a conscious effort to appreciate what you have — not only will you rediscover old pleasures, it will most likely slow your urge to spend.

Often the desire to shop comes about because of something known as hedonic adaptation, or the hedonic treadmill. This is the tendency humans have to slip back to an average level of satisfaction very shortly after large improvements or positive life events. So even though you get a massive pay raise, the enjoyment is short-lived, and you soon come to expect the extra salary. Similarly, the new phone you were yearning for is only truly impressive for a few weeks before you forget the novelty and start to think about your next purchase.

Gratitude can help overcome this tendency because it slows down the pace at which we get complacent about what we have — and by cutting out the excesses of spending, our financial wellness gets an immediate boost.

Gratitude Promotes Great Relationships

Relationships flourish with gratitude, and relationships are how business happens. So exercising a bit of gratitude can be a boon to your personal and professional relationships alike, making you happier and wealthier at the same time.

This dynamic in professional environments has already received much scientific and psychological attention. Studies dating back decades have shown that customers come back and tip more if they are thanked for their generosity. In one wonderful example (which I really wish I had come up with myself), restaurant servers handed over the check to diners — either blank, or with a handwritten note saying thank you, including a smiley face. This research showed that those who had written "thank you" on their checks received higher tips.

Because gratitude forges an immediate personal connection, it's a great way of opening the door to a developing relationship. In a work environment, that might be as simple as getting an extra few dollars tip, or it could be the start of something beautiful. You never know.

Gratitude Keeps You Healthy

Science shows you can cut down your medical bills by saying thanks. Seriously.

Don't take my word for it. Professor Robert A. Emmons is the author of a report on the impact of gratitude on health. He says gratitude "can lower blood pressure, improve immune function, and facilitate more efficient sleep. Gratitude reduces lifetime risk for depression, anxiety, and substance abuse disorders, and is a key resiliency factor in the prevention of suicide."

Not only all that, but those who are grateful also report having a stronger social network that can support them when they need help, as well as improving blood pressure, cholesterol and heart health.

Gratitude's impact on financial wellness is based on elements of scientific and psychological fact. It may sound far fetched at first, but saying thank you to others, and remembering to be grateful for what you have — rather than yearning for more — could really be the secret to unlocking greater emotional and financial well being.

What do you think? Crazy theories or common sense? How do you practice gratitude in everyday life?

This article is from Claire Millard of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. For about $400 to $650 a season (usually June to October), you can purchase a "share" of vegetables and fruits from a local, most likely organic, farm or group of farms. Payment is usually due up front, which is a financial help to small farmers. In return for this payment, you receive a weekly box of fresh produce. In some areas, you can also buy smaller half-shares for less cost. You support local agriculture, you eat farm-fresh produce, and it can be a lot of fun to try new foods.

CSAs are a great concept. However, before you jump in, ask yourself: Would a share be a smart buy for my household?

1. Are You a Fan of the TV Show, Chopped?

Odds are, if you love Chopped, you'll love a CSA box. It's kind of like that. You get a mystery box of ingredients, and you need to make something tasty. It's actually better, because you don't get stupid things like orange gummy worms or vegemite. A CSA box can bring some serious fun back to cooking.

2. Are You Ready to Embrace Your Inner Pioneer?

Food preservationists, rejoice! If you buy a CSA share, you probably can't eat it all in a week, and you'll need to preserve some of your bounty. If your idea of a good time involves canning, dehydrating, blanching, or making freezer meals, a CSA share is ideal. Bonus: It's really nice, in mid-winter, to pull some blanched corn out of the freezer or open a bag of dehydrated berries.

3. What If You Hate Some of the Box Contents?

That is indeed part of the "danger," which is a strong word, but you get my meaning. Personally, I abhor breadfruit, no matter what is done to it, including adding gobs of mayonnaise and calling it "almost like potato salad." I ask around to see if anyone wants my giant breadfruit and if not, well, I throw it into the compost, where it will still do some good. It's fine to ask your share organization what sorts of produce you might expect to receive.

4. Do You Have Time for Food Prep?

Once you pick up that box, it's time to deal. You will need to sort through your produce and determine what needs to be used first. I have had fruits that needed to be eaten right away, some vegetables I could refrigerate, mushrooms that were a tad limp, and others that needed to be washed and stored, like leafy greens. This isn't something you will feel like doing on a Wednesday night. Some nights I just want to eat a hamburger and watch House of Cards. It's best if you can get your box on a weekend, when you have time to sort and clean. Ask about what days your CSA delivers or is available for pick-up.

5. Do You Eat Out a Lot?

If you do, this is not the program for you. Shares are for people who cook and eat at home most of the time.

6. Do You Like to Learn New Recipes?

My CSA helpfully includes recipes, but not all do. You may need to dig through cookbooks or hit the Internet for answers to your questions such as "how to cook a parsnip" or "things to do with kale." Winging it isn't a good use of the money you have spent (witness my Okinawan sweet potato fries — yuck).

7. What Kind of Food Does Your Family Like?

Just because you feel like your family "ought" to be eating more fruits and vegetables doesn't mean that they will. My kid still won't touch a tomato, not even one of the pretty heirloom purple ones. The point is, just because you bought the box, your family may not be thrilled about eating the contents.

If a CSA share is too much of a commitment, consider instead supporting local agriculture by shopping at farmers markets, or patronizing grocery stores that feature local produce.

Have you ever belonged to a CSA? What was the hardest produce to use up?

This article is from Marla Walters of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. I have no complaints with that treatment, however, squashes are so healthy, versatile, and delicious that creative people keep coming up with new and very unique recipes. Here are 20 to try throughout the holiday season, and beyond.

Let's Give It a Nationality

First, let's chat about spaghetti squash. These are really fun to cook, but the trick is getting them cooked all the way through. My method: Split the squash in half, lengthwise. Scoop out the seeds with a spoon and discard. Put a tablespoon of water in each squash "boat," cover with wax paper, and microwave on high for 18–20 minutes. Test with a fork and see if the strands lift easily. If not, microwave another five minutes or so. When it's done, "fluff" the strands with a fork. Then, try these toppings:

1. Mexican

Top with shredded chicken, Monterey Jack cheese, chiles, salsa, black beans, cilantro, and sour cream.

2. Italian

Top with cooked pork sausage, marinara, mozzarella cheese, sliced olives, and chopped parsley.

3. Mediterranean

Top with chopped artichoke hearts, feta cheese, chopped tomatoes, greek yogurt, and sliced green onions.

Let's Fry It

Everything taste better fried, even squash.

4. Squash Pancakes

The trick to these crispy squash pancakes is to really squeeze the moisture out of the yellow squash. I have an old tea towel I use for just this purpose — bundle up the grated squash in the towel, and wring it out. As a variation, toss in some pepperjack cheese (half a cup) for extra spiciness and creamy texture.

5. Fried Zucchini

Got any obnoxiously large zucchini? Perfect. Here is what my mother-in-law did with those: Wash, pat dry, and slice into ¼ inch pieces. Dip in egg wash, then dip in crushed cracker crumbs. Fry in butter.

6. Squash and Chickpea Patties

I think these chickpea pancakes with leeks, squash, and yogurt make an absolutely great breakfast. I make them in batches and refrigerate. When I get to the office, I just zap in the microwave. Chickpea flour is high in folate and protein (higher than whole wheat, even).

Let's Puree It

Butternut or kabocha squash puree very easily. I prefer the microwave method, but if you'd rather oven-bake, heat your oven to 400 F. Halve the squash and place cut-side down on oiled aluminum foil, then bake for about 30 minutes. Check for tenderness — it should be "scoopable." If not, keep baking. When it is tender, remove from the oven, cool until you can handle it, and then scoop out the cooked squash into a large bowl and mash. Once cool, refrigerate or freeze for future use.

7. Butternut Squash Dinner Rolls

If you are a fellow carb-lover, your must try these butternut squash dinner rolls. The squash puree keeps the rolls very moist (think of potato rolls or potato bread). As the author mentions, you get the added benefit of a little vitamin C. If you prefer to use wheat flour, I'd recommend wheat pastry flour.

8. Butternut Squash Pizza

This butternut squash pizza is very autumnal, and I am thinking that sliced into very thin pieces, it would be a great appetizer for a holiday feast. I think I will add some chopped pecans on top.

9. Squash Muffins

Butternut as breakfast? Sure! Check out these spiced butternut squash muffins. Bake on a Sunday, and reheat for breakfast. A handful or raisins or (naughtier) chocolate chips in the batter are a nice variation. They also freeze very well, if you want to make a double batch.

10. Squash Cookies

If you like your sweets with hidden benefits, check out these soft squash cookies. If you aren't a fan of raisins and nuts, you might prefer squash and dark chocolate chip cookies. (This does use baby food instead of homemade puree, which is another option.)

Let's Put it in a Casserole

One dish dinners are so easy, and so warming when it's chilly out.

11. Squash Casserole

I'll tell you right now: This classic Southern squash casserole is the best of the bunch, because the topping is made with Ritz crackers. Magical things happen when recipes combine Ritz crackers, butter, and cheese. Please don't stop at the topping, though, because the squash below is also absolutely delicious. The cayenne pepper gives it a little "zip," so don't even consider leaving it out.

12. Black Bean and Squash Enchilada Casserole

Running close behind the Ritz cracker squash casserole is this black bean and butternut squash enchilada casserole. If you like Mexican food, this one is for you. If you don't, it might convert you. Yes, it's vegetarian, but you can easily toss in a cup or two of cooked, shredded chicken breast.

13. Vegetable Tian

By far the prettiest, most appetizing use of yellow and zucchini squashes is this vegetable tian. ("Tian" refers to vegetables that are chopped, cooked in olive oil, and then baked with cheeses on top.) Leftovers, if you have any, are really nice with scrambled eggs the next morning.

Let's Stuff It

Once you scoop the seeds out of the middle, you're left with a void that needs filling. Delicious filling.

14. Patty Pans With Bacon and Eggs

Patty pan squashes can be hard to find, and cooking them can be a little intimidating. (It's the weird shape.) While you can easily slice and cook patty pans just like zucchini or yellow squash, it's more fun to stuff them (especially with bacon and eggs). These are also low-carb..

15. Sausage-Stuffed Zucchini

This Italian sausage-stuffed zucchini is easy and versatile. You can switch up the meats (hamburger, pork sausage, etc.). I like that it serves six; that guarantees lunch leftovers or a night of no cooking!

16. Acorn Squash With Mushrooms and Rice

One of my cousins, who is a vegetarian, makes these stuffed acorn squashes with mushrooms and rice each year at Thanksgiving. As the recipe notes, they also make a great "Meatless Monday" entree. She uses wild rice instead of long-grain white rice; I think that gives them a very nutty flavor, which is even better.

Let's Roast It

Roasting, like frying, makes everything delicious, especially vegetables. (How about roasted, then fried?)

17. Roasted Butternut Squash

Even people who are picky about vegetables, I have found, tend to like them roasted. Roasted butternut squash makes a sweet and simple side dish. You can also toss it with pasta, tuck it into wraps, or add it to rice.

18. Roasted Zucchini, Squash, and Tomatoes

This recipe for roasted garlic-Parmesan zucchini, squash, and tomatoes is a keeper. Again, great on its own, but pair it with some whole wheat pasta... wow.

19. Roasted Delicata Salad

Lest you think squash dishes are always heavy, have a look at this beautiful delicata, pomegranate, and arugula salad. It honestly gave me pause about making a turkey for Thanksgiving. Can we just have this and some nice rolls?

20. Warm Butternut and Chickpea Salad

Another beautiful salad — this time a warm butternut squash and chickpea version. Kabocha also works well in place of the butternut.

Have any unique squash recipes to share?

Like this article? Not having enough time to make an apple pie from scratch. So if you’re strapped for time but have a lot of apples on hand, try these easy, relatively fast, and super delicious ways to enjoy apples this fall.

1. Make Apple Butter

Sometimes you want more than jam to spread on breads and use in other recipes — apple butter is not only easy to make, but really, really, really good on cornbread (and anything else you put it on).

2. Dip Slices in Honey

This is a great midday snack or dessert! Simply slice a whole apple into wedges. Then, pour a tablespoon of honey into a small dipping bowl. This is also how some people celebrate Rosh Hashanah, but literally anyone can enjoy this.

3. Snack on Apple and Quinoa Salad

This quinoa salad featuring chunks of sliced apple has a satisfying crunch and makes for a healthy side dish to any lunch or dinner. You can try this recipe substituting apples for citrus or berries as well.

4. Try Apples on Pizza

Have you ever tried some thinly sliced apple on pizza? Next time you’re going for a more playful sweet and savory pizza experience, try this pizza recipe with apples, gorgonzola, and caramelized onion.

5. Add Apples to Pork Roast

Sometimes you need a hearty, complex main dish. What could be a better fall weeknight dinner treat than a pork roast with apples? The Pioneer Woman’s recipe is tried and true perfection.

6. Bake an Apple Ginger Galette

When you don’t have time for a full-on pie with homemade crust on top, try a French-style gallette. It’s like a rustic tart-pie hybrid without half the fuss of either. Like the recipe instructs, roll out some homemade (or storebought) dough, fill the middle with apple filling, then simply fold up the sides. An easy enough dessert to bake on a weeknight.

7. Throw Them in a Grilled Cheese

Similar to apples on pizza, apples in a grilled cheese are to die for. Try a grilled cheese sandwich with lots of melty brie, fig, and sliced granny smith apples. It’ll become a family favorite in no time.

8. Dip Slices in Almond Butter

If you’re trying to keep your energy up throughout the day and need to watch your caloric intake, try this: cut up half of an apple into slices. Take out a jar of unsalted almond butter. Then, dip the slices in the almond butter for a reasonable and yummy snack.

9. Sip Mulled Cider

Sure, you can buy some cider and mulling spices at the store, but have you considered making your own cider one of these crisp, fall weekends? Make your own big batch of cider with this easy recipe and then celebrate by heating it in a Crock-Pot for a quiet evening by the fire.

10. Make a Classic Waldorf Salad

Have you ever made a Waldorf salad? This salad invented in the 1890s is an easy side dish with apples, grapes, celery, nuts, and mayo. There are also infinite variations on the salad, like this kale version made by Whole Foods.

11. Recreate the McApple Pie

You know those deep-fried apple hand pies you used to get at McDonald’s as a kid? They’re actually pretty easy to make. These work great as a party snack or just a special treat for the kids.

12. Sweeten Your Oatmeal

Need to get back into the oatmeal for breakfast routine to keep the pounds off? It’s really easy to get bored with the wallpaper paste flavor of even the best quality oats. Instead of flavored oatmeal, keep the plain and add chopped fresh apples to it. The apples add much needed texture and flavor.

13. Fry up Some Fritters

Do you fantasize about those delicious apple fritters at your local donut shop? It’s totally attainable at home! This excellent fritter recipe from The Kitchn makes it easy and fun to fry up some fritters for a weekend brunch treat.

14. Mix Some Party Punch

If you’re having any parties this September through December, you’ll need a seasonally appropriate drink. Trust me, you don’t want to make dozens of single cocktails as people get thirsty — you want a big, batch-made punch that will go strong all night. This brandy apple punch is sweet and potent enough to keep things festive.

15. Vary Your Apple Pie Game

Is a plain, traditional apple pie not exciting enough for you to set aside a whole day to make one? Try making a fun variation, like this apple blackberry recipe, this apple plum recipe, or this apple and cheddar recipe. Or, throw in a new ingredient to make it your own. There are so many options that you could make a new apple pie every weekend all season long.

16. Get Nostalgic With Candy Apples

Instead of buying them at a huge markup at a candy shop, do it yourself. This Halloween, make some chocolate, caramel, and candy coatings, set up a candy apple topping bar (broken candy bars, sprinkles, chocolate chips, cookie crumbs, etc.), and have everyone make their own candy apple.

17. Add Apples to Stuffing

Is it time to change up the stuffing you’ve been making for years? Try a new version with festive additions like chopped apples and nuts. This classic Ina Garten stuffing recipe combines apples and sliced almonds in a most classy and delicious fashion.

18. Finally Make Your Own Applesauce

It might surprise you that homemade applesauce is actually very easy to make, and can work with dozens of different variations. After having carefully-planned, proportionately appropriate, nutritionally balanced breakfasts or lunch, it seems a shame to blow all of that with a bag of potato chips. But that's what I'll do, if I don't have a snack that tastes good. I have found out the hard way that a bag of carrot sticks is not going to do it. So what is my solution? This list of 24 healthy, yet delicious, snacks.

Sweet Snacks

Why finish with something sweet when you can start there?

1. Mini Peppers

Bags of these multi-colored, vitamin A and C-packed little peppers now show up in most grocery stores and at they are super-handy and delicious. Three peppers only have 25 calories. I love them just by themselves, but if you need a dip, try plain greek yogurt.

2. Apples

I know this is silly, but if I take an apple to work, it will sit on my desk. But if I cut it into slices and put it into a Ziploc with a dab of lemon juice, I am more apt to eat it. This works at home, too: Cut-up apples disappear from the refrigerator, but the whole ones sit. A medium apple has about 95 calories. Still find it boring? Take a tablespoon of peanut or almond butter along in a container, and use it as a dip.

3. Oranges or Clementines

An orange has only about 45 calories, and of course loads of vitamin C. A clementine "cutie" has about 40 calories, and the added benefit of being really easy to peel. If the idea of eating a plain orange isn't tantalizing, try cutting it up and adding some strawberries, walnut pieces, and a splash of raspberry vinaigrette.

4. Frozen Grapes

Grapes are great, but they're like mini-popsicles when you freeze them. Cut into little bunches, wash, dab dry, put into individual bags, and freeze. You'll have them ready to go all week. An entire cup is only 110 calories.

5. Frozen Blueberries

A cup of frozen blueberries is also really cool and satisfying. One cup has only 79 calories. They are great just by themselves, or added to a low-fat smoothie.

6. Watermelon

Because it contains so much water, watermelon is very filling. An entire cup is only 46 calories. I like the "Thai" variety, which are smaller and rounder, but very flavorful.

7. Frozen Banana

A frozen banana, at 120 calories, is a great treat. If you are a chocoholic, try slicing them, freezing, and then adding a dab of Magic Shell. This of course boosts your calorie count, but you really only need a drizzle. This becomes a super-satisfying snack, especially if you have a sweet tooth.

8. Sweet Potato

Years ago, I read that Martha Stewart would cook a sweet potato and take it on the airplane to eat when she traveled. I thought that was very odd, but she's right — they make a really satisfying snack. At 114 calories, you can go nuts and add a few mini-marshmallows. If your office has a microwave, you can make a sweet potato in seven minutes.

9. Peaches and Nectarines

What is better in the summer than a ripe peach, or a nectarine? I admit, though, they can be messy "office food." I like to slice mine and put into a container with a half-cup of nonfat vanilla yogurt. An entire peach has only 59 calories; a half-cup of nonfat yogurt, around 70 calories.

10. Applesauce

I'm a fan of the little pre-made cups of applesauce (50 calories). A sprinkle of cinnamon jazzes them up, too. Ever tried making homemade applesauce? It's easy and tastes absolutely great. My mom used to toss in a handful of Red Hots (candies) and melt them in. It turned the applesauce a pretty color and made it extra-zippy.

11. Strawberries

Just 76 calories are found in a cup of strawberries. I love a little fruit salad of sliced strawberries, a tablespoon of feta (20 calories), and balsamic vinegar. The vinegar brings out the sweetness of the strawberries.

12. Yogurt

Yogurt is like a blank canvas. A cup of nonfat greek yogurt has 130 calories. You can eat it as is, or drizzle honey, jam, or chocolate syrup over the top. Or, go another direction and add some salsa. Fresh, chopped fruit is a natural on top. Granola is great, too, but make sure you use a low-fat granola, as granola can be very caloric.

Savory Snacks

Sometimes in the middle of the day sweet won't do, but savory will.

13. Garbanzo Beans

Also known as chickpeas, these little legumes are a terrific snack. My new favorite method? Oven-roasted in a little olive oil, with spices. I particularly like this recipe because it includes cumin, one of my favorite spices. One-third cup has about 141 calories.

14. Miso Soup

Also great when I'm freezing in our over air-conditioned office: Miso soup. I buy the kind without MSG. A cup of miso soup, with the tofu pieces, is only 45 calories. It does contain a lot of sodium, so you'll need to be mindful of that.

15. Avocados

We now know avocados contain "good fat," but you still need to watch how much you eat. Half of a medium avocado is about 140 calories and around 14 grams of fat. One of the great features of avocados is that they contain oleic acid, which helps signal your brain that you are full. So, you don't need to eat more than a couple of slices on a cracker or a piece of toast, and your stomach will be happy.

16. Popcorn

I'm not a fan of pre-packaged microwave popcorn, but food journalist and author Mark Bittman has a great method for making a more wholesome microwaved popcorn. If you have an office microwave, this is a big hit. Try curry powder, garlic powder, a little Parmesan, or Japanese furikake mix on top. A cup of popcorn contains 55 calories.

17. Edamame

Edamame, or boiled soybeans, are easy to prepare. They are good both warm or chilled. Simply boil until tender, drain, and add salt. A half cup has 120 calories, nine grams of fiber, and 11 grams of protein! Experiment with adding seasonings — try sriracha sauce, oregano, or chili powder.

18. Hummus

The chickpeas again make an appearance, but this time in a creamy dip. There are 409 calories in a cup of hummus, but a cup is a very large snack. I find that about a third to a half is just right, paired with some whole grain crackers or carrot and celery sticks. If you want to reduce the fat in hummus even a little more, try making your own using part boiled soybeans.

19. Hard-Boiled Egg

Make a pot of hard-boiled eggs on a Sunday, and you'll have low-calorie (78 calories) snacks in their own packages all week. Not only is an egg really satisfying, but it also has six grams of protein. Want a little more variety? Make a deviled egg and mash the yolks with a little greek yogurt, curry or cumin, or add sriracha sauce.

20. Chips and Salsa

A half-cup of salsa has about 118 calories. There are many new types of tortilla chips out now that are very low-fat. (I like "Beanitos," which do contain beans, and have only six grams of fat in 12 chips.) Salsa has a lot of flavor, so you won't feel deprived, and the bean chips are heartier because they contain more fiber.

21. Turkey and...

There are only 60 calories in four slices of lunchmeat turkey, and nine grams of protein. Pile it on a Wasa Crispbread (30 calories each), or roll up a celery stick. Try it with a thin layer of reduced-fat cream cheese and a dollop of cranberry jelly. Roll tightly and dip in dijon mustard. Place it in a rice-paper wrapper with sprouts, grated carrots, and a dollop of hoisin sauce.

22. Rice Cakes and...

While not all that satisfying on their own, there are umpteen ways to top a rice cake. My favorite low-calorie/healthy toppings include cottage cheese, avocado slices, and white bean dip.

23. Pistachio Nuts

Yes, 48 pistachio nuts is a lot of nuts, but that is a one-ounce serving. They are also heart-healthy and give you something to do with your hands. I recommend these for boring webinars.

24. Cottage Cheese

At around 100 calories for a half-cup, cottage cheese is another great snack choice. Besides also getting calcium and protein, it's very versatile. I like it with a little salsa (red or green). Adding chopped green onions or chives also gives it a great flavor. Spoon it up, or spread it over a cracker.

Just remember: proportion is key. Even the healthiest snack ceases to be beneficial if you overeat it.

What are your favorite healthy snacks?

Like this article? When you think of this nutrient-rich and tasty fruit, you probably think of guacamole. Surprise yourself by trying these unexpected uses for avocados.

1. Skin Moisturizing Mask

Want perfectly supple, smooth skin without having to buy expensive lotions full of weird stuff like parabens? Make your own, using avocados as the star ingredient. Here is a really easy avocado mask recipe that involves basic ingredients that are probably in your fridge right now. Simply leave the mask on for five to 10 minutes, then rinse when it starts to harden. Wash it away to reveal super soft skin.

2. Ice Cream

An excellent source of healthy fats and boasting such a smooth and buttery texture, avocados make a wonderful substitute for cream, coconut milk, or soy milk in frozen treats. Making these diet and vegan-friendly desserts is also insanely easy. Try making mint-chip avocado ice cream, or this recipe for avocado popsicles!

3. Hair Deep Conditioner

Skin is one thing, but what about an all-natural deep conditioning treatment that will soothe a dry scalp and alleviate damaged hair? Avocado is rich in healthy oils that easily coat the hair shaft, but even more so when they are overripe. So, if you have some forgotten avocados that are no longer at peak deliciousness, this is a great use for them. Try this hair treatment recipe, which uses oatmeal and vinegar for a great at-home spa day.

4. Cocktails

Avocado margaritas, anyone? Adding a creamy and somewhat savory taste to the classic drink makes for a refreshing update to a summer favorite. This frozen margarita recipe calls for avocado and tarragon. Just add tacos! Also delicious: try a savory Michelada with avocado slices or puree added in for an even dreamier meal-in-a-glass.

5. Breakfast

Avocados for breakfast is no alien concept — we have breakfast burritos and omelets to thank for that. And, lately, avocado toast has become a hot snack for any meal. But have you heard of the baked avocado with an egg inside? It's two of the most delicious foods combined, plus it's stupidly easy to make, so why not try it tomorrow morning?

6. Baby Food

Did you know that avocados make for a great and tasty transitional food during the period your baby is teething? It is firm enough to help them learn to chew, but soft enough to mash with their gums with ease. To share with younger or smaller babies, simply mash or puree the ripe and unseasoned avocados before feeding. Avocado also works as a great secondary ingredient in these homemade baby foods.

How do you put avocados to good use outside a bowl of guac? However, since paleo diets are more reliant on meat and exclude inexpensive staple foods such as grains, beans, and root vegetables, they can be costly. Luckily, there are a number of ways to cut the grocery bill and eat paleo at the same time.

1. Eat Adventurously

Honestly, if you are going to be preachy about paleo, then you better be eating bugs. That's really how our Paleolithic ancestors got much of their protein. They weren't eating bacon. In fact, 80% of the world's population still eats insects as a regular part of their diet because they are, in a word, delicious. Seriously, tarantula tastes like crab. Personally, I crave cricket tacos, but bug purists Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek forgo the tortilla and eat them straight like potato chips.

Bugs are also an excellent source of cheap protein. For example, crickets are a complete protein, have twice the amount of B12, and 60% less saturated fat than ground beef.

And, unlike beef, pork, or poultry, bugs have a much lower risk of transferring disease to humans. They epitomize clean eating. (The only caveat to eating bugs: Because they are close cousins to shellfish, people with shellfish allergies should not eat insects, even in larval form.)

If you are too squeamish to try one of the 1700 different edible bugs, then try finding exotic recipes for unloved animal parts such as liver, tripe, or feet. Although I hate liver and onions, I love liver pâté. Liver is rich in iron, copper, and vitamin A. If you have ever eaten a McRib sandwich you've already eaten tripe, so you might as well enjoy the far superior Florentine recipe. Since I am one of those people who believe the skin is the best part of roasted poultry, I am a crazy fan of duck and chicken feet as they are 100% chewy yumminess.

2. Buy the Unfashionable Cuts of Meat

One of the reasons to make friends with your butcher is preparation advice. Cheap cuts of meat like neck bones or chicken feet are cheap for a reason — the average American doesn't know how to cook them. Good butchers can tell you how to cook everything from pigs' knuckles to oxtail for optimal flavor and texture.

3. Don't Waste Food

This seems like a no-brainer, but Americans throw away 30% of their food each year. Use your bones for stock. Leftover bacon grease makes anything fried in it taste that much better. Use wilted vegetables and leftovers to make Thursday Night Soup.

4. Grow Your Own

Did you know that you can buy seeds and food plants with SNAP EBT benefits (food stamps)? So, even if you are on the barest of food budgets, you can supplement your diet with your own organic produce.

5. Create a Food Cooperative With Your Neighbors

It's very hard to grow all your own food. However, if you grow food communally, it is very easy to produce a huge amount of food that can be shared between neighbors. Your block only needs one zucchini plant. Trust me on this.

Even if your entire neighborhood has black thumbs, consider joining forces to buy staple goods like nuts or olive oil in bulk to save money. You could even buy an entire cow to split with your friends.

6. Join a CSA (Community-Supported Agriculture) Program

A CSA is a subscription service for locally produced food. Some CSAs even offer meat, dairy, and other specialty items like honey.

7. Barter for Food

Since I am a beekeeper and an experienced food preserver, I use food in jars as currency. I have been working for the last few years to build a barter economy in my neighborhood. My goal is to procure 50% of my food through barter. While I love to get cold, hard cash for my products, I trade honey and jam for free-range chickens, ducks, and eggs with a local poultry farmer. (Both of us think we are getting the better deal.)

But don't think you have to be a gardener to barter for food. Babysitting, home repair, and car trips to the airport are all excellent barter currencies. Recently I crocheted legwarmers for a friend in return for five pounds of hand-shelled pecans and five pounds of soap nuts for laundry.

8. Make Friends With Your Local Food Producers

I never ever have to pay for fertilizer for my garden. My friend the poultry farmer drops off bags of chemical-free chicken manure for me whenever I want. While having your own personal poop fairy isn't thrilling to anyone who doesn't garden, I also get a ton of food that is perfect for eating but won't sell at the farmer's market from farmer friends. Bruised fruit can be pureed into juice, frozen for sorbet or cooking, or turned into preserves.

9. Go Late to the Farmers Market

If you aren't pining for that one special thing that always sells out early, then go to the farmers market at the end of the day. Even Los Angeles-based farmers who go to a different neighborhood market every day still end up throwing away a lot of food that won't last another day, is bruised, or is otherwise not worth the gas money to transport it to the next location. Usually, they are happy to give you a good deal on produce that won't last another day.

10. Shop More Often

Americans tend to bulk buy more than Europeans. As a result, our refrigerators are much larger and we tend to waste more food. Unless you have a huge family, you will not be able to eat through 22 cubic feet of food before it goes bad. Also, if you shop several times a week, you will have a better chance of getting produce that hasn't been sitting around for six days in the store, and getting deals in the meat and deli departments on food that is just hitting it's expiry date. It doesn't matter if the sell by date on the bacon is tomorrow if you are cooking it tonight.

11. Use Coupons

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to find coupons for meat and produce. Even if you live in an area where stores don't accept coupons, most stores have weekly sales. If something you can buy in bulk to use later is sold out, be sure and ask for a rain check. In exchange for letting Vons Grocery track my purchases, as a member of VonsClub I get discounts and personalized sales on produce year around. Just like shopping in season, I match my recipes to my purchases, rather than shopping for specific ingredients to match a recipe. I use the recipe calculator at Epicurious to match recipes to the ingredients I have on hand.

12. Hunt or Forage

Even if guns scare you and you can't see yourself ever becoming a proficient archer, you can still hunt and gather like your paleo ancestors.

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and learned how to forage for chanterelle mushrooms as a kid. It was a super-fun kid activity because it is, after all, the foodie version of a treasure hunt. To prevent poisoning, I recommend going on a guided hunt with an experienced mushroom hunter first before setting out on your own.

Every March I enjoy weeding my garden because that is when I harvest all the lamb's quarters, nettles, cresses, and dandelions for salad greens. It is so satisfying to eat the enemy.

13. Glean

Every year I post a want ad on my local Freecycle group asking for surplus backyard produce. And every year I receive, at minimum, 2000 pounds of free, organic, fruit. It's human nature to hate food waste, so people are thrilled to have me take their fruit off their hands. Some communities, like Los Angeles, have food laws that make any fruit growing in parks or hanging over public land (like the sidewalk or the street) fair game for urban foragers.

Frankly, I always like to ask before I pick, because generally the owner of the tree will give me more from their "private" stock. I always hit up real estate agents for leads on free fruit. Fallen fruit attracts vermin, which is something that no potential home buyer wants to see while at an open house tour. Real estate agents will call me when they want a tree picked clean.

14. Eat Less, Drink More

Americans are so bad at staying hydrated, that often times we mistake thirst for hunger. Are you feeling hungry between meals? Try drinking a glass of water instead of eating a snack. If you still feel hungry ten minutes later, have that snack. I am surprised by how much less I eat, when I drink 10 glasses of water a day.

15. Buy In-Season Produce

Buying in-season produce not only saves money but also the environment. Out of season produce is often grown thousands of miles away and shipping adds a heavy carbon footprint to food that shouldn't be environmentally taxing. Also, the longer the interval between picking and eating, the more the produce degrades nutritionally.

16. Buy Canned or Frozen Produce

Studies show that canned and frozen fruits and vegetables have the same nutritional value as fresh produce (providing they are free of added salt and sugar). So if it is less expensive to purchase frozen or canned produce in your area, this is a good way to stretch your grocery budget.

17. Conventionally Grown Produce is Still Better Than None

If you live in an area where organic food is difficult to procure, or expensive, don't throw in the towel on eating healthy. Eating factory farm-to-table is still a healthier option than eating packaged food. Having an all-or-nothing attitude makes every new habit into an odious chore.

Also note that organic certification is incredibly expensive, so there are thousands of small-scale food producers across the nation growing chemical-free and non-GMO food who cannot afford the official stamp of approval. For example, I procure the majority of my organic produce that I turn into jam and pickles from backyard orchardists and gardeners who use no pesticides. Ironically, as a treatment-free, urban beekeeper, my bees are exposed to a lower pesticide load in the city than bees that pollinate commercial agriculture! However, none of my food product can be sold in the "organic" part of my local farmers market because I lack certification.

18. Eat More Eggs

One of my clients who I cook for has Ankylosing Spondylitis, an autoimmune disease that causes chronic pain and inflammation. He gets pain relief from an extreme starch-free diet. Although he eats more than two dozen eggs per week, his bad cholesterol levels have dropped since he went on a no-starch diet. He attributes this to the fact that he's eating more vegetables and lean meats than ever before. This is anecdotal, but it's worth testing for others who are looking for a less expensive protein source. Please note that organic eggs from free-range chickens have almost three times the amount of omega-3 and twice the amount of vitamin E as eggs from conventionally kept chickens.

19. Eat More Carbs

I know. I said the C-word. But any diet should focus on nutrition, and not make you pathological about food. There are many people who forgo grains but eat starchy root vegetables who still get the same positive effects on their health. Use common sense. Substituting bacon and steak for bananas and brown rice in your diet and thinking this is solid nutrition is crazy.

20. Be a Part-Time Paleo

I am a weekend carnivore. I eat vegetarian five days per week and reserve meat consumption for dinners out with friends or special occasions. This saves me a huge amount of money on groceries and is much better for the planet. Better eating once a week is better than never. It takes most people time to build up a pantry stocked with high quality food. It might take you a year of careful shopping to build up your budget and pantry, so if you can't go 100% paleo right now, cut yourself some slack.

Are you eating a paleo diet? The first involved cream, sugar, egg yolks, and fresh vanilla, combined with just-picked peaches. The second one was to scoop vanilla ice cream into a bowl and top it with Metrecal. She knew it defeated the purpose, but she said it "made the Metrecal taste better."

Grandma loved ice cream, and so do I. I don't usually have the time to drag out our ice cream maker, though, so here are some recipes for "ice cream" that are a lot easier, very interesting, and healthy. I think Grandma would approve.

1. Bananas

Frozen bananas make amazing "ice cream." I like bananas, so I was fine with plain old banana flavor, but then we monkeyed around (sorry) with different flavorings like chocolate syrup, caramel, and coconut. What I found to be interesting was that the banana flavor isn't that strong, so if you aren't crazy about bananas, just add flavors. And, bonus: I didn't feel guilty after polishing off a bowl of… bananas.

2. Bananas, Even Better

Buoyed by our frozen banana success, my husband tried something he'd read online, which was slicing bananas horizontally, freezing for an hour, then coating with Magic Shell chocolate and refreezing. These were delicious. I wanted to renew our marriage vows, they were so good. I ought to make things like vegan seeded gluten-free high-protein banana bread from our bananas, but I am busy coating them in chocolate now.

3. Coconut Milk

Upon discovering this coconut milk technique, I immediately dove into my pantry. I was delighted to find cans of coconut milk, which I put into the refrigerator (always start with cold coconut milk). Also, note that you want full-fat coconut milk, not "lite." This works either by hand, with a whisk, an emulsifying blender, or in a traditional ice cream maker. I happen to love coconut flavor, so plain, sweetened coconut ice cream was fine by me. If you'd like to jazz it up, though, try adding:

Blackberries

Strawberries

Coffee

4. Greek Yogurt

I always have a tub of plain Greek yogurt in my refrigerator, so this ice-cream-from-yogurt recipe was one I could try right away. I think it's much better than any store-bought yogurt I have ever had. Try adding:

Peaches

Blueberries

Mango

5. Sweetened, Condensed Milk

People frequently get confused about evaporated milk and sweetened, condensed milk. You will need sweetened, condensed milk for this no-churn ice cream. This one is not dairy-free, so you are forewarned. However, I think it's the creamiest, most truly ice-cream-like of the bunch, and also quite versatile. Try adding:

Chocolate

Caramel

Butterscotch

Fruit

6. Almond Milk

This almond milk recipe makes an ice cream which is a little more granular than creamy, but I sort of like that texture. It is not vegan, as it contains egg yolks. The chocolate is really irresistible.

7. Hawaiian-Style

Shaved ice is an extremely popular treat in Hawaii. I like mine with vanilla frozen yogurt in the middle of the shave ice. You pick various flavors, such as coconut, lilikoi, cherry, lime, etc., which are squirted onto the top of the fluffy ice. If you are feeling really adventurous, add azuki beans, which are sweet little beans. I'm not making this up!

8. Creamy Sorbet

Getting a sorbet to be creamy is a good trick, and this sorbet recipe tells you how to get it the consistency of soft snow. One of my friends does this every Christmas, and it makes a very festive-looking dessert.

9. Tofu Ice Cream

Okay, tofu-lovers, give this dairy-free ice cream a whirl. I passed on testing it because I'm a big weenie, but you can comment and tell me how great it is. (The recipe says the flavor is "slightly bean-y.")

10. Pudding

If "creamy" is your thing, then you might want to give pudding ice cream a try. The pudding mix contains thickeners, which adds to the stability of the dessert.

11. Avocado

Remember, avocados are technically fruits. The creamy texture we love in guacamole totally works in ice cream. You can make either a vegan version or a more traditional milk-and-cream recipe.

12. Cashews

Oh, you crazy vegans and your cashews. This cashew recipe actually produces a sort of nutty, delicious ice cream. Who doesn't like cashews or maple syrup? I do.

13. Cashews No. 2, Vegan Chai

Although a little more complicated than some of the recipes above, if you are a fan of chai, you will love this creamy concoction.

14. Cool Whip

I had this Cool Whip ice cream years ago at a friend's and had forgotten all about it. It goes together really fast and freezes to a soft-serve consistency in only four hours.

15. Let it Snow

Yes, ice cream made from snow! Just, y'know, be careful about where you get your snow...

There you have it! Next time you are craving ice cream, consider making your own from one of these interesting ingredients.

What's your favorite ice cream substitute?

Like this article? Most of us enjoy a sweet treat once in a while. But there are ways you can treat yourself without going overboard on the sugar.

The World Health Organization's recommended daily intake of added sugar is about 25 grams for an adult of average body mass. That's not a whole lot, considering that a can of soda can contain up to 40 grams of sugar. Read on for ways to cut down on sugar in your daily diet. Even if you start with just one of these ideas at a time, you'll be doing your body a favor.

1. Eat a Slow-Burning Breakfast

Start your day off right, and stave off mid-morning sugar crashes, by eating a protein and fiber-rich breakfast. Unfortunately, many breakfast foods tend to be packed with sugar — pastries, waffles, pancakes, sugary cereals, jams and jellies — so start substituting a more nutritious first meal. A veggie omelet with a slice of whole-wheat toast, or low-sugar yogurt with fruit and chopped nuts, are better options. If you're in a rush, have some hard-boiled eggs ready in the fridge so you can grab an egg and a piece of fruit on your way out the door.

2. Eat Before You Go Out

Eat a healthy meal or snack before going out. You'll be less likely to indulge in a sweet treat because of hunger, and if you're going grocery shopping, you'll be more likely to make rational and healthy choices.

3. Cut Drink Sweetening in Half

My Achilles' heel is sweet drinks. I love having an iced coffee or tea whenever I go out. To cut down on the massive sugar overload such drinks can entail, I've made a habit of always asking for "half the sugar" whenever I indulge in a specialty drink. It has become so routine that a fully-sweetened drink now tastes excessively sweet to me. While I still need to cut down on these indulgences (a Grande Caramel Frappucino from Starbucks contains a whopping 63 grams of sugar! Even with half sugar, that's just not healthy), it at least gets me a step in the right direction.

4. Substitute Unsweetened Alternatives

I realized that part of the reason I loved having a sweet drink whenever I went out was simply the ritual of getting a coffee and carrying it around, whether it was at a morning playdate at the park, or during a shopping trip at the mall. I switched to ordering a black decaf Americano instead of a sweetened drink. Although I'll still sometimes order something sweet, most of the time, it's just black coffee. (Yes, I realize I would save a lot of money if I made it at home, but... baby steps, baby steps.)

5. Make It Yourself

Making your own treats at home means that you can control the sugar content. How about making a commitment to stop buying packaged cookies and making your own instead? You can usually cut out ⅓ to ½ of the sugar called for in most recipes without sacrificing flavor.

You can also make your own low-sugar, protein-rich granola instead of cereal. Instead of buying sweetened yogurt, add a bit of honey to plain yogurt. And if you (or your kids) are partial to chocolate milk, trying swirling milk, a banana, and some cocoa powder in your blender instead. A friend of mine also makes a raw, sugar-free, chia seed jam, which her kids love.

6. Start Reading Labels

If you haven't started reading nutrition labels on the food you buy, now's a good time to start. You'll be shocked at how much sugar is in your favorite foods. Once you know which foods are the biggest culprits, you can start replacing them with lower-sugar alternatives. For example, Honey Nut Cheerios have nine grams of sugar per ¾ cup serving, but regular Cheerios have one gram per one cup serving. (Yes, the serving sizes are different. The world of nutrition labeling is an imperfect one.) Even so-called "healthy" foods, such as juice, can have an excessive amount of sugar and may need to be limited.

7. Be Aware of Hidden Sugar

Even foods that we don't think of as sweet can contain a lot of added sugar, contributing to your daily quota. That ketchup you dipped your fries in could be chock-full of sugar, as is the BBQ sauce on your ribs or the dressing on your salad. Reading nutrition labels is your friend in these cases — limit these hidden-sugar foods or substitute them with a no-sugar alternative.

8. Get Sugar Out of the House

It's too much to expect the average person to resist temptation when it invades their own home — give yourself a fighting chance by keeping added sugar out of the house. Make a rule that sweet treats are just that — treats — meant for a special occasion, not for everyday.

9. Stay Hydrated (With Water)

You might feel a bit peckish, but in reality your body is craving hydration. Fill up a water bottle and make a goal to empty it within a certain time frame. With the extra water, chances are you won't feel as hungry (and you won't be reaching for a soda when you get thirsty). If plain water doesn't appeal to you, make a pitcher of cucumber or lemon water to keep in the fridge.

10. Don't Go Cold Turkey

It's okay to allow yourself an occasional treat. You're more likely to be successful in cutting down on sugar if you do it gradually, instead of by cutting it out completely. Perhaps you can allow yourself dessert on weekends, or ice cream as a reward for fulfilling a goal. Once your body gets used to consuming less sugar, you won't crave it as much.

Do you have any strategies for resisting those sugar urges?

Like this article? These Indian-style calzones have a robust filling of potatoes, spinach, and chickpeas with spices, and are surrounded by a fluffy flatbread.

9. Poblano-and-Cheddar-Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms

A mixture of grilled poblano peppers, rice, cheese, and spinach is stuffed into meaty, grilled portobello mushroom caps. It's a meal conveniently packed into one delicious dish.

10. Panzanella Salad With Bell Peppers, Summer Squash, and Tomatoes

For a more traditional panzanella, use summer vegetables like bell peppers, squash, and fresh tomatoes. Take it up a notch by grilling your ingredients, bread and all, and you're sure to please your meat eaters and non-meat eaters alike.

11. Toasty Feta Kebabs

These vegetarian skewers combine creamy and salty feta cheese with toasty bread, lemon, and ripe cherry tomatoes. It's a tasty combo, and will go great with your typical summer vegetable skewers.

12. Grilled Chipotle Lime Cauliflower Steaks

Cauliflower is surprisingly great for grilling, and the texture and smoky flavors of this recipe make a solid meat stand-in. Spices accentuate the smokiness of the grill, and lime juice and cilantro brighten up the cauliflower steaks.

13. The Ultimate Veggie Burger

If you've been searching for a great homemade veggie burger with no luck, then look no further. A great non-meat burger can be hard to find, but if you're willing to get through the long list of ingredients, you'll be rewarded with burgers than even the biggest meat lovers will swoon over.

14. Grilled New Potato Salad

Potato salad is a mainstay of summer gatherings, but have you thought about grilling your potatoes? A trip on the grill makes the potatoes lightly crispy and tender, and softens the onions perfectly. The dish is smoky and oh-so-good, and feels more substantial than your standard potato salad.

15. Grilled Vegetable Sandwiches

Grilled vegetables sandwiches really are a thing of beauty. Throw your favorite veggies on the grill — in this case, mushrooms, squash, peppers, and onions — and grill until tender and well-marked. Add a flavorful (preferably cheesy) spread and some great bread, and you have a noteworthy summer meal.

What are your favorite grilled veggie dishes?

Like this article? In fact, up to 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated, getting fewer than the recommended 8 to 10 cups per day. Are you one of them? If so, here are some simple ways to ensure you drink more H2O on the regular.

1. Drink First Thing

One of the easiest ways to add more water into your day is to grab a glass when you wake up. Establish this habit as part of your everyday routine, and you'll find yourself guzzling more often. I like to start my day with plain water — no ice — and a generous squeeze of lemon. Warm water absorbs into your system more readily and the lemon gives you a boost of antioxidants.

2. Carry a Bottle

Keeping your water close by is another sure way to get you drinking. Bottles come in all materials from BPA-free plastic to glass to stainless steel and beyond.

3. Use an App

Keeping a mental tally of how many glasses you down in a day can be hard. Use technology to help keep track! You can download Waterlogged for free like over a million people across the globe have done. You'll see charts and have the option to upgrade for reminders. Either way, tracking takes less than a minute out of your day.

4. Sip Before Meals

Try drinking a couple glasses of water before you eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You won't just stay hydrated, you might also shed some extra pounds. In a 2010 study published by Obesity, individuals who drank two glasses of water before their meals ate less throughout the day. They lost more weight over a 12-week period than the control group.

5. Eat It

If you really hate sipping on a glass of water, try eating foods that are drowning in the stuff. Many fruits and veggies boast over 90% water content. Snack on watermelon, tomatoes, broccoli, grapefruit, cucumber, and more. You'll be getting more whole foods in your diet to boot.

6. Try Flavoring

There are so many ways you can flavor water — from store-bought pouches to recipes you'll find online. One of my favorites? This sweet watermelon water. Combine seedless watermelon with water in your blender. Sweeten with Stevia or your favorite substitute. Absolutely delicious.

7. Infuse It

You can also purchase an inexpensive water infusion pitcher to keep in your fridge. Pop in different fruits and let the flavors mingle. I love using sliced cucumbers to replicate my favorite spa water at home. But anything from citrus to berries to stone fruits will do. You can even refill it a few times without having to replace the fruit (just make sure it's within a couple days).

8. Use Ice Cubes

Put lots of ice into your beverages throughout the day. After all, ice is just frozen water. Right? By cooling down your juice or soda, you'll also sneak several ounces down the hatch without even thinking about it. Who knows, eventually you might skip the other drinks and go straight for the pure stuff.

9. Get a Filter

Sometimes your tap water's taste can be less than appealing. And despite what you might think, bottled water isn't always the answer. Try using water filters at your tap or filter pitchers in your refrigerator. They can take out many impurities and improve the taste of your tap water. Bottled water can cost up to a whopping 10,000 times more per gallon anyway, so save your pennies.

10. Banish Sugary Beverages

I have a policy at home where I only drink water (or wine). I've decided that I'll save all other drinks for dining out or special occasions. This is a wonderful method to try if you're hooked on soda or other high caloric beverages. You'll drink more healthy water and also trim your waistline with all those calories you'll save.

How do you get more water in your day?

Like this article? They're also an excellent source of potassium, vitamin C, magnesium, and folate. But who cares about nutrition when they taste so great? You can use bananas in a variety of recipes — from healthy to downright sinful — so check out this list for ideas from frozen to grilled.

1. Banana Ice Cream

I've seen a lot of banana ice cream recipes online, but this peanut butter and jelly mix is the most creative. Oh, and did I mention it contains only three ingredients? Frozen bananas, peanut butter, and jelly. Blend the peanut butter and bananas together first, then fold in your jelly. Enjoy immediately.

2. Banana Bread

Whenever you find yourself with a bunch of browning bananas, make banana bread. When the fruit is very ripe, it's especially tender and sweet. This recipe calls for 1-⅔ cups all purpose flour, but consider subbing in some whole wheat (maybe around a half cup) for more nutrition.

3. Banana Cream Pie

I first came across this rich banana cream pie recipe in Martha Stewart's Baking Handbook. Novice pie bakers might like to know that pate brisee, which is listed in the recipe, is a type of shortcrust pastry. You can skip this step and use a store-bought pie crust if you like.

4. Banana Brownies

These banana brownies will satisfy your sweet tooth in a major way. And they're gluten-free to boot. After you bake the moist brownie base with the best dark chocolate you can find, you'll whip up a chocolate ganache made with avocados.

5. Banana Pudding

The author of this vanilla wafer banana pudding recipe claims the dessert will make you famous. Combine one vanilla pudding packet with milk and sweetened condensed milk. Fold in Cool Whip and four bananas. Then top with lots of vanilla wafers.

6. Banana French Toast

When I was eating vegan many years ago, I used to make banana French toast all the time. Even non-vegetarians can appreciate this healthed-up brunch recipe. The banana "egg" mixture is surprisingly convincing and contains banana, almond milk, flax meal, and cinnamon. Dip, soak, cook, and enjoy with lots of maple syrup.

7. Banana Cake

Give your guests a blast from the past with Ina Garten's old-fashioned banana cake. There are a few ingredients in this recipe that take it over the top, including sour cream and orange zest. To finish, blend together a delicious cream cheese frosting. You can substitute Neufchatel cheese to cut down on fat.

8. Banana Boats

These banana boats are a unique dessert perfect for grilling and camping season. In the peel, slice your bananas lengthwise. Stuff with chocolate and peanut butter chips. Top with marshmallows. Cook on your grill until bananas have softened and peel has blackened, around 10-15 minutes.

9. Banana Oats

Here's a solid banana oatmeal recipe you'll want for breakfast each morning. Just cook oats on the stove before adding sliced bananas, honey (or maple syrup), brown sugar, and milk. Or feel free to leave out the brown sugar for a more balanced breakfast.

10. Banana Smoothie

Low on other types of fruit? Make this simple banana smoothie that's nothing more than bananas blended with ice and milk. You can also substitute yogurt for the milk. I'd use Greek yogurt for added protein power.

11. Banana Naan

This banana naan is perfect for dipping into hummus, soups, sauces, and more. You'll need just one half of a mashed banana. Mix it together with yeast, water, flour, and salt. After a half hour rise, cook on your stovetop to achieve a golden brown finish.

12. Banana Granola

Here's a snack that's low in calories and fat — honey banana granola. You'll blend the honey and banana together and then coat the oats in the mixture to bake. I recommend lining your baking pan with parchment for this recipe to avoid a sticky mess. The granola should stay fresh for around a month.

What's your favorite way to enjoy a banana?

Like this article?
