You only have 30 days left to take advantage of this one, but it's a great offer for a great product. The big picture is simple — open up a BBVA Compass Build-To-Order Free checking account in Colorado and you get a FREE iPod Touch valued at $199.99.

Of course, the small print does ask a little more of you, but nothing you wouldn't be doing with your current checking account. You may see other offers like this have ended, but I picked up the promotion card today at my own branch (so I'm not eligible, obviously) and asked when it ended. April 30th was the answer. There may be similar promotions in your state, so do some checking.

Here are the major details:

To qualify for this offer you must open a new BBVA Compass Build-To-Order Free Checking account by April 30th.
The minimum deposit must be $25.
Within 6 weeks of opening the account, have your first direct deposit of at least $300 from an unrelated third party (your paycheck most likely).
For at least 6 months after opening the account, have your minimum $300 direct deposit continue once each billing cycle.
You will have to pay $9.95 shipping and handling for your iPod Touch.
If you don't comply, you'll pay $180 for the iPod Touch.

There's some more legal jargon, but that's the big idea. Basically, if you change banks and do what you do now with the new BBVA Compass Bank account, you'll bag your iPod Touch. If it's just not worth the hassle, fair enough. Certainly something to consider though, especially if you're looking for a new bank anyway. And the iPod Touch also allows you to do mobile banking, which is another reason to take advantage of this deal.

Worst job: working for a company that didn't pay me for four months straight. I went from October to February with no paychecks. In San Diego. I had to call my dad and beg for money to pay my rent.

Alternately, working at IHOP as a hostess when I was 16. 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM, on your feet with no breaks, and if you were hungry at the end of your shift, you had to pay for your own food. One morning the cash register broke at 10:30 AM - which was right when the after-church crowd decided to come on over for some pancakes.

I did learn how to carry six water glasses at once and how to count out money so it snaps, though.

Get out the Vote and Grab a Tall Starbucks Coffee for Free!

Voting anxiety is kickin' in big time. With only a couple days left until the final vote, many are more than ready to make their voices heard – and then head back to life as normal. In an effort to reward those who vote on Nov. 4, Starbucks is pouring free coffee.

Their ad (airing on YouTube and at their website) makes it clear. Come in on Nov. 4^th, say, “I voted,” and grab your tall coffee, no money required. It's a simple gimmick to get people to vote. I think there's a bit more to it than that, however.

It's been three long months of listening to my closest friends, clients, and family Twitter and email non-stop about how important my vote is (as long as it's for their choice of candidate). I'm ready for the vote to take place, and our new Pres to emerge (however disappointed I may possibly be at the results.) This means perhaps we can start getting back to a time when I was less a Party member and more a gal you used to have coffee with.

Starbucks is facilitating a step in the right direction. Free coffee just might get everyone sitting down together, regardless of affiliation. The marketing guys have also figured that a few of us may also buy an over-priced (but delicious) scone, and out of our gratitude for free coffee, we may leave a killer tip.

As with most free promotions, this is about money. Thankfully, it may turn out to be about something more. This promotion runs all day on Nov. 4, at participating Starbucks locations. Get out your vote, pull up a chair next to that voter on the other side of the partisan aisle, and drink one for free.

Michelle maintains a list of all printable and in-store only offer forms. This makes it easy to keep track of the best deals offline, too! Previews of the next week’s newspaper coupons and in-store deals can help me to plan ahead in my shopping.

Membership to Refund Cents is very affordable. On-line membership is about $1 per month. If you'd also like to receive the monthly print magazine RefundCents, in the mail, the cost is $25 per year and includes access to the website.

This website has been great for me. I don’t have a lot of time to hunt down deals or scour websites for the most relevant info, but this has given me a good balance of saving money and time. If you’re at all curious if the site could help you save, give it a look! With 29 years of experience, Refund Cents has been a valuable resource to my family.

Free Bag of Yummy Corozonas Chips!

A couple weeks ago I received a small sample of Corozonas Tortilla chips. I think I requested it a while ago and I totally forgot about it. They sent me two flavors, one was Baja Bean Dip and the other was Magarita Lime. I was pleasantly surprised because I really enjoyed the chips.

They were quite tasty and had very bold flavors. The Baja Bean Dip flavor was actually quite spicy. The chips also included whole oats so they looked quite interesting. The company claims that their tortilla and potato chips actually reduce cholesterol so that makes them quite different from other tortilla chips I have tried. More detailed nutrition information is available here .

Anyway, I am glad the company is offering everyone a chance to try this product for free with their coupon offer. To print the coupon you need the SmartSource coupon printer which you can dowload for free at SmartSource.com. After that is installed you can click the coupon link here . Each computer can print two coupons and each coupon is good for a bag of Corazonas chips up to a value of $3.29. On the Corazonas site you can find a store that carries the chips with their store locator .

Throw a House Party for Free

Word-of-mouth marketing is something we all do – all the time. And while I prefer to stick to sharing authentic testimonies with my family and friends, I can always be persuaded to “share some love” with a larger circle of friends if it won’t cost me anything. In fact, some of my most favorite companies have been the “sponsors” of several gatherings this past year at my home via the House Party website. Here’s how it works:

Sign up. By visiting the House Party website, you can easily enter all your info to get on board for future parties. Their privacy policy is pretty tight. I have never been spammed as a result of joining.

Pick a party. Would you like to share Gerber’s newest baby food? Are you looking to give your buddies a test drive in your Ford? Perhaps you dig that newest Cartoon Network show and want to have a preview party of the new season? It can all happen, but only by an early application. View all the available parties, and choose the ones you would be most interested in hosting. By signing up for the pre-invitations, you can be alerted new parties as they open.

Apply. Once you found a party you like (Hershey’s Bliss Chocolate, anyone?) answer the quick application questions, and wait to be accepted. Usually only 10,000 people are picked as party hosts, so don’t expect to be accepted to every party you apply for.

Plan Your Party. Once you hear that you have been chosen to host the party, you are ready to plan. The website offers email invitations, a blog, places for photos and video, and frequent updates on the party details. Choose to have your party on the national party dates, or pick ones that fit your own unique schedule.

Have Fun! When your prize package gets to you (and they are usually worth $100 or more) you can share the goodies with your guests, and you will be all set to have a great time. Past party packages have included food, gifts, prizes, games, coupons and exclusive promotional gear from companies that I love! There was no need to sell anything or try to get guests to sign up for anything. We just kicked back, enjoyed the swag, and let the products speak for themselves!

Resourceful guests that I know of have used the parties as ways to reach out to their community, and there is plenty of opportunity to share the love! (The last Gerber party provided party hosts with several cases of baby food, which went over very well at local daycares, shelters, and schools!)

The concept behind House Party is brilliant: Get people talking about your product in a natural setting in their homes, and give them enough gear to do it eagerly! I don’t know about you, but I’m in. Wal-Mart Celebrates Its Own Green Efforts with Free Reusable Shopping Bags

Wal-Mart gets its fair share of negative press (and Wise Bread bloggers aren’t excluded.) However, a recent article in the new National Geographic’s Green Guide magazine really had me thinking about some of the ways Wal-Mart has led the way with environmentally-friendly initiatives. Regardless of how you feel about Wal-Mart’s status as a commercial superpower, you really have to take a look. (And while you’re at it, snag a free shopping bag!)

On April 19th, Wal-Mart stores everywhere will be celebrating Earth Month by partnering with Kellogg’s and giving away 1 million reusable shopping bags. The bags will usually cost a buck to buy, but starting 8AM next Saturday, you can have one free!

I have been following Wal-Mart’s plastic waste war for quite some time. The recent article in Nat Geo’s The Green Guide detailed Wal-Mart’s journey from their plastic bag recycling receptacles to finished sustainable products and charitable donations to community organizations. (The full story can be seen in the debut issue.)

However, it is Wal-Mart itself who seems to have the most to say about their green efforts. Wal-Mart’s goals to generate zero-net waste is a lofty one, but they have taken amazing steps toward eliminating unnecessary waste, including:

Implementing the “Sandwich Bale” – a method of pressing loose plastic (shopping bags, etc.) between two stacks of cardboard before bundling for transport to recycling centers. Wal-Mart estimates that this effort alone has diverted more than 97 million pounds of plastic from landfills.

Developing the “Super Sandwich Bale” – this new practice from 2007 allowed Wal-Mart to include aluminum cans, plastic hangers, water bottles, office paper, paperback books, and other recyclables into ONE gigantic bale for transport. Wal-Mart estimates that this has resulted in the diversion of millions upon millions of pounds of aluminum, office paper, and plastic from landfills.

The Kids Recycling Challenge program currently rewards schoolchildren with $5 for every 60 gallon collection bag they bring in to Wal-Mart recycling centers, in addition to cash prizes for the most motivated classrooms!

Additional efforts include the recycling of cardboard boxes, paper recycling efforts at the corporate office, tire recycling at the auto repair centers, and a procedure for closed-loop recycling for suppliers (which allow some of the recycled materials to go back to manufacturers for the creation of new product at a lower cost.)

Granted, all of this green goodwill won’t give Wal-Mart a free ticket into the hearts of many Americans. In fact, USA Today mentioned in a Sep 25, 2006 article that “Wal-Mart isn’t pushing sustainability solely out of the goodness of its heart. It has realized that it can make money by selling products that are environmentally friendly. It can make millions selling recycled trash and save hundreds of millions by cutting transportation costs.”

But is this so bad? Whether companies are motivated by money or morals, the outcome can be a great one for our planet.

I’m taking advantage of the free bags on April 19, and if you’re in the neighborhood, you might as well, too! Kids can also get free Wild Flower Seed Cards from Wal-Mart and Nickelodeon on this special day.

A New Walgreens Development: Free Photos on April 9th!

My junk drawer is full of almost-expired disposable cameras. Dropping one off at the local Walgreens is not only a great way to avoid waste, but it won’t cost me a dime! Here’s the scoop on the next great freebie from Walgreens!

Maybe you just got your free ink refill from Walgreens last promotion. Not surprisingly, they’ve found another super way to get you back into the store. Free photo development is a weakness of mine, and if you’re game, you might want to pop in and take advantage, too!

Here’s the link to the printable coupon. Take it in to any participating Walgreens store this Wednesday, April 9th along with your roll of film or disposable camera, and there is no charge for one set of 4X6 prints and negatives. I’ll admit that I’ve almost completely gone online developing through a service that both stores and prints my photos. However, this is great for getting through the pile of disposables that I am just too lazy to mail in. The promotion will develop 35mm, APS-film or the disposables with any number of exposures! (Time to take in that roll of 48!)

The one-hour photo service may be slow on this day, due to high volumes of processing. I would plan on dropping off your film and expecting to get it later in the day. Also, it might be a great time to take advantage of some additional deals that Walgreens is offering, including:

Is this the weirdest freebie ever?

Anyone who knows me knows I'm no fan of WalMart. Aside from their horrific treatment of workers and the impact they have on the economy, their stores just suck all the energy out of me. Which is why I don't go there. But a friend told me today of a WalMart Exclusive DVD that made me laugh out loud. Seriously, this one is a killer. It's the Clueless Whatever! Widescreen Edition DVD with, wait for it, FREE TRANSFORMERS BEACH BALL!

I had to stop and think about that one (after I stopped laughing). Why have these two seemingly unrelated movies been thrown together? And not just that, but two completely different target audiences as well. As someone in advertising, I was clueless (pardon my pun).

Why Clueless and Transformers?

Why Transformers and a beach ball?

Why bother with a Widescreen edition of Clueless (it's hardly Blade Runner or Apocalypto)?

So I sat down and scratched my head some more, pulling the few remaining hairs out of my noggin. And then it hit me. It's supposed to bring two completely opposed target audiences together, right? No, that can't be it. Hang on, I have it...the movie is called Clueless, the promotion should be clueless! Bravo, wonderful idea WalMart. That's why you're the leader of retail. With that in mind I have some more DVD promotions for you. My treat, use them as you see fit.

Did Office Max hire an accountant with an I.Q. of 62?

I think I may be losing my grip on reality.

Recently I received four coupons in the mail from my local Office Max. Two coupons were for $10 off a purchase of $10. I'm not the best number-cruncher but I figured that meant I got two $10 items for free. I was right. I strolled into Office Max, picked out two $10 items (pack of batteries, paper supplies) and after tax the grand total came to around $1.40 for $20 worth of product.

"How on earth could Office Max benefit from this?" i pondered. "Perhaps people will come into the store and buy way more than $10 worth of stuff?" I then thought. Seemed like a reasonable conclusion to me.

Then, I get two more coupons from Office Max, each offering $15 off a $20 purchase IF I sign up for MaxPerks, their reward card. I wonder to myself why Office Max is so eager to get me back to the store, but I need a few more things so I return.

First, I buy a case for my external hard drive. Retail price $19.99. I hand over my coupon and the cashier doesn't even blink. He doesn't ask me to sign up for a form, he doesn't care that the coupon requires MaxPerks membership to be valid. I just get $15 deducted from the bill and walk away with a $20 item for just $5. "Could this happen again?" I once again wonder.

This is where the story gets even more strange.
I go back to the same Office Max store the next day and, armed with my coupon, pick out a microphone/headset combo for my computer. Retail price $19.99.

The cashier asks me if I'd like to buy an extended warranty on the $20 item. I laugh and say no. But then he says "Well, if you buy the $2.99 extended warranty I can give you a $10 coupon good for this purchase."

"Ah yes, but I'm already using a coupon" I honestly respond.

"Oh, that's ok, it still counts" he replies with a big grin. "But you'll need to grab a few things to bring the total up so that I can deduct the addtional voucher."

Dazed, I walk around the store trying to find something else I need and settle for a few packs of gum and some mints.

My grand total came to $25.40. After a lot of fiddling with the system, he duducted the $15 voucher and the $10 voucher, so I paid 40 cents for the whole purchase. And once again, I never even had to sign up for the MaxPerks card to get the discounts.

So, can anyone tell me what is going on with OfficeMax? Is the idea to make customers so amazingly happy that they'll come back and spend more money? I doubt I'll go back unless I get another voucher because generally I find Target has the things I need for a little less.

If anyone from OfficeMax corporate office can shed any light on this "give the store away for free" promotion, I'd love to hear about it, too. Because quite frankly, I can't see how this one turns a profit.

Cool & funky things I found FREE on Craigslist

It's amazing what people will throw away these days. Or give away. And that's why I'm a huge fan of Craigslist .

Not only is a great place to sell all that stuff you thought no-one would buy, it's also an ideal way to get your hands on some great things for almost nothing. Or even better, actually nothing!

Here are a few of the items I found for FREE on my local Craigslist. The free button is located in the For Sale section of the Craigslist site. If you don't find at least a few things on there that you could find useful, I'll eat my hat (but not to worry, I'll find a free one on Craigslist anyway).

A COOL VINTAGE TURNTABLE & CABINET
Free of charge. I just have to go pick it up. They're trying to replicate these things for hundreds of dollars these days. And someone is just giving this one away. Ha!

A MICROWAVE STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BRADY BUNCH ERA
You just can't beat vintage stuff. I love it. And this one still works. I love the old wood and black plastic. Classic!

As you can see, I have a penchant for the older, cooler items. That's because they have character baby, something sadly lacking in this modern day world of plastic and vinyl.

Seriously, what red-blooded male wouldn't want a Keg Fridge in his garage or basement? And why pay for it when some generous chap is giving a perfect one away for free! Score!

A REDWOOD DECK - 12'8" X 23'8"
I mean, even as scrapwood it's worth something. But this is a complete Redwood Deck. All it needs is to be rebuilt on your own property (cut to size of course) and then stained to brighten it up. What is that? $1000 saved on timber?

SOLAR PANELS - NOT JUST FREE, THEY CAN CUT YOUR POWER BILL
I don't know the going rate of large solar panels to power your home, but I imagine they're not cheap. Someone moved into a house and these were sat at the bottom of the garden.

THE BEST FOR LAST - FREE BEER!
Yup, someone had a friend who worked in a liquor store and he left this behind as a gift when he moved out. They don't drink beer. I do. Looks like 50-60 cans for my beer fridge. Woot!
