At last count, over 16,766. And what's more, the library system is getting used more and more by the general public these days. That's hardly surprising, considering the economic climate and less disposable income available for books. (See also: Free Books: Little Libraries That Build Community and Save You Money)

But that word, books, is something of a misnomer. To equate a library with only books is like saying you can only get a cheeseburger at the aforementioned fast food chain. The fact is, our public libraries have been doing an incredible job of keeping up with the times, and they have way more to offer than simply books and reference materials.

1. Streaming Music and Movies

You think Netflix, Pandora, and Hulu are cool? Well, your library has its own version, only you don't pay one cent to stream the titles. You just need to install the apps, and have a current library card. The most popular one right now is called Hoopla, and it's awesome. All genres are covered, and there are several new releases. You can borrow up to five titles at one time, and stream them straight to your tablet, smart phone, or computer. Isn't technology awesome?!

2. Tax Forms

As well as the post office and some larger grocery stores, libraries have a full stock of the most popular tax forms in the runup to the April deadline. They also have the tax instructions booklets at hand as well. And while librarians are not qualified tax accountants, some will offer you basic advice.

3. Instant Audio Books

You are most likely aware of the massive array of books on CD, tape, and MP3 players at your library. They have both fiction and nonfiction titles. But did you know you can know stream audio books over your smartphone? You don't even have to go into the library. Simply request the title and when it's available (often, there's no wait at all), you will be given a download link. You will have to use an official piece of third-party software, such as Overdrive, but that's all there is to it. The book plays through your phone, and you have access to it for at least two weeks.

4. The Latest Movies on DVD and Blu-ray

As well as a having thousands of older movies, libraries stock the latest releases on both DVD and Blu-ray. Of course, there are some savvy library users who know this, and reserve them months ahead of time. So if you want to get hold of a copy as soon as it's available, become one of the smart users who signs up early. Every public library has a website that enables you to reserve or "hold" the latest titles. Get your name in the system early, or you will be number 432 in line.

5. Coffee, Snacks, and Milkshakes

These days, libraries know that people will want to sit and read a lot of the information they have (and quite a lot of it cannot leave the library). So, they have started to provide beverages and snacks at reasonable cost. You can't just start swigging coffee in the middle of the fiction section; they usually have designated dining areas. But, you can definitely bring your reference book or magazine to that section and enjoy it whilst sipping on a latte and eating a muffin.

6. Museum Passes

The next time you want to take the family (or just yourself) to the local museum, take a trip to your local library first. Many libraries around the country are now participating in the museum pass program, which pairs them up with local museums. The libraries have a limited number of passes every month, so they're given out on a first come, first served basis. Ask your local library for details. Remember, different libraries have different passes and different lending rules, so if one library doesn't have what you're looking for, try another.

7. Vintage Photographs

Many libraries have old and rare photographs in their archives, and you are more than welcome to look through them. Usually, they will be related to the state you're in, but as this is the digital world, many libraries have the information available online. For starters, here is the New York Public Library's photo database. It contains over 800,000 images for you to search through!

8. Family Tree Archives

Are you interested in tracing your lineage? Well, make your first port of call your local library. It can be expensive to sign up to genealogy websites, but many libraries have access to them, and will in turn give you access to the massive searchable databases. If you find out you're related to royalty, make sure you still come back and visit us, ok?

9. The Latest Magazines

A single issue of a magazine can run you anywhere from $3 to $10 (sometimes more if you are interested in international periodicals). Buying a few of these every month can get expensive. Your local library will have copies of dozens of the latest magazines for you to read. Everything from consumer reports to home and garden and fishing, all free and waiting to be read.

10. Meeting Rooms

Do you have a group of friends or colleagues that require a weekly place to meet and chat? If your home isn't available, try the local library. They have several meeting rooms available that can be booked by the hour. Sometimes book clubs meet there, on other occasions it's chess clubs, study groups, or even War Hammer societies. They don't have to be related to books or reading; it's a community service, and you're part of the community.

11. Tools

Really? Well, not every library has its own Home Depot section, but it's starting to catch on. Library members can check out tools the same way they would check out books or DVDs. The list of rules and regulations is a little more rigid (see this one from Berkeley) but the basic idea is the same; free tools for members, for a week or two.

12. Musical Instruments

Interested in learning the violin or playing the piano? Your local library could be a great place to begin. As well as having a lot of musical instruction books and videos on the shelves, they could also have a supply of instruments to check out. From keyboards and drums to stringed instruments, you'd be amazed. AADL even has guitar pedals.

Does your local library offer more cool stuff? If you love to watch movies like I do, but hate spending a major chunk of change just to see one, bookmark this list of ways you'll never have to pay for movies again. (See also: Watch Movies in the Theater for Free)

1. Free Screenings

Granted, it helps if you live a major city like New York or L.A. — those cities host screenings very frequently — but there may be screening opportunities near you. These screenings are always movies that will be released in the near future, which means that not only do you get to see a free movie, you get to see it before most people. Heed this warning, however: If you plan to attend a screening, it's best to arrive a couple hours in advance to get a place in line. The screening is always overbooked to ensure maximum attendance; once they reach the limit, you're out of luck even if you're still in line, and that's just a bummer.

2. Free Redbox Rentals

I caught onto the Redbox freebie game many years ago when I discovered that I could turn one promo code into free DVDs for as many debit or credit cards that I have. Because the code is linked to your card account, to get the most bang for your buck (or lack thereof in this case), just pull out a different piece of plastic at the kiosk. This is a great trick to extend the life of free codes. To ensure that you keep the free codes coming, sign up for text and email alerts from Redbox and check sites dedicated to code sharing, like Inside Redbox. Keep in mind, however, that the rental is usually only free for the first night; the DVD must be returned the next day before 9 p.m. or you'll start getting charged. And if that happens, it defeats the whole purpose. (See also: Never Pay for a Redbox DVD Rental Again)

3. Free Outdoor Movies

One of my favorite summer pastimes is enjoying a free outdoor movie. In New York City, these screenings are abundant — but they've also become increasingly popular in many cities and towns across the country. Free outdoor movies are an excellent, romantic date night that'll keep the cash flow in check, but they're just as great with a group of friends. Pack your snacks, drinks, and blankets, and enjoy a flick in the great outdoors. What could be better than that? (See also: 50+ Fun Nights Out for $10 or Less)

4. Free Movie Nights at Bars

Your local bars are always trying new promotions to get bodies in the chairs that will order food and drinks, and one way some bars do this is to host a movie night. I've been to several different movie nights at different bars, and I've enjoyed myself every time. Often the establishments hosting these free movie nights offer a free snack — often popcorn — too. This activity is worth looking into — just do a search online to see what's in your area.

5. Hulu

You have to pay for newer and mobile content via Hulu Plus, but if you're into watching a limited number of oldies but goodies, you can sift through the free content on Hulu — which isn't the easiest task since most of its offerings are locked without a subscription. Still, it's there, and you can take advantage of it.

6. Crackle

Content-streaming site Crackle may seem too good to be true, but it isn't. Similar to Hulu (but with a much larger selection of free movies), Crackle offers full-length Hollywood movies in all genres. Even better, you'll actually want to watch these movies, unlike some of the other free sites.

7. Popcornflix

Yet another free-movie-streaming service, but the selection on Popcornflix mostly includes obscure, low-budget, straight-to-DVD movies that most people have never heard of. If you're into those kinds of movies, this is your new Saturday night obsession.

8. YouTube

It's hard to find a full-length movie on YouTube because it has time restrictions on the length of posted videos, but you can find movies (albeit not always the best quality or selection) in several parts that you can watch back to back.

9. Dailymotion

Like YouTube, this video-sharing service hosts a limited selection of movies, but you'll have to dig.

10. Trade With Friends

Do you have a sizeable collection of DVDs? Does one or more of your friends have a sizeable collection of DVDs? It makes sense then to create a sharing system among those friends and swap DVDs that you haven't seen before. Everybody's a winner.

11. Download to Your Computer

I know what you're thinking — isn't that illegal? Most of the time it is, but there are sites that offer free downloads for public domain movies. You can find lots of movies in many categories. Good places to start include Public Domain Torrents, Internet Archive Movies, and Public Domain Flicks. (See also: Great Horror Movies You Can Watch for Free)

12. Your Local Library

Have you been to the library lately? If it's been a while, I'll let you in on a little secret — the library lets you borrow more than books now. You can take home free DVD rentals. This is a great way to stay entertained on a weekend when you're minding your money even more.

13. Research Small Screenings Around Town

Sometimes the smaller museums and organizations host events in which a free movie will be screened. I once went to an event that was screening an LGBT movie that I didn't know anything about beforehand but ended up enjoying. These opportunities may be in your area, too. A good way to tap into these events is to search for them on Meetup (you might make some new friends while you're at it) or check your area's events calendar. Many colleges and universities host free screenings, especially of documentaries, international films, and other highbrow stuff, as well.

Do you have other suggestions on how to watch movies for free? Strange as it might sound to us standing on this side of history, no one thought that owning the copyright to "Night of the Living Dead" was terribly important at the time. That's why you can find it just about anywhere, from Netflix to YouTube. (See also: How to Get Netflix to Play on Your TV)

"Night of the Living Dead" isn't the only example of a public domain film that's downright bone-chilling. I fancy myself a bit of an expert on the weird, the old, the macabre… and the public domain. Step into my horror crypt to see what's out there totally for free that kids from 8 to 80 will enjoy.

Night of the Living Dead

This is the godfather of all public domain horror films. For those who haven't seen it, this is the film that transformed zombies from the directed automaton slaves of voodoo priests into shambling legions of undead. It's widely credited, alongside more decidedly adult fare such as "Bonnie and Clyde," with ushering in the modern MPAA ratings system. It's certainly not "tame" by today's standards, but it is good for bigger kids. Adults will have fun picking apart all the obvious metaphors about race and social conformity, to say nothing of the paranoid terror of being locked down in a farm house battling an army of ghouls.

A Bucket of Blood

This one is a little more light and fun than the above. This Roger Corman opus is your basic Faust story. A wanna-be beatnik just can't make art until he accidentally kills a cat, which he then coats in plaster. Soon, everyone wants to buy his surprisingly life-like (dead-like?) sculptures… and there's only one way to do that. Best on a double feature with "Little Shop of Horrors" — the two were filmed the same weekend, have a similar plot, and share many sets. A lot of fun, and as many laughs as scares. (See also: Halloween Drink Recipes to Scare Up Good Times)

Little Shop of Horrors

Basically the same story as the above, except a lovable loser who wants to get the girl uses a man-eating plant for fame instead of dead body sculptures. Look for Corman stalwart Dick Miller (star of "A Bucket of Blood") in a cameo as a man eating plants in a film about a man-eating plant.

Freaks

This one is… definitely not for the little ones, despite being from 1932. The backstory on this is that the producers wanted to out-horror "Frankenstein" and succeeded a little too well. It's a classic revenge story about carnies getting the better of a woman and a strongman who wrongs one of their own. It's also a wonderful tale about acceptance, friendship, and the amazing things people can do in the face of adversity. The scene where the limbless man lights his own cigarette isn't faked. On the contrary, he rolled the cigarette himself off camera. Remade by David F. Friedman as She-Freak, but that one is definitely not for kids.

Horror Hotel

"Horror Hotel" is Christopher Lee at his bone-chilling best. Especially for our readers in New England, "Horror Hotel" is a lot of fun, a gothic horror film that tells the tale of a female grad student investigating witchcraft. She runs up against a reincarnated 17th Century witch who sacrifices virgins to maintain her youth… and has just found her latest sacrifice.

White Zombie

This is the original zombie movie, or at least the oldest one that people still watch. Remember what I said earlier about "Night of the Living Dead" reinventing zombies? Well, don't expect shambling crowds of dead-eyed ghouls crying out for "braaaaaaaaains." Instead, look for mind-controlled slaves of voodoo lords. Bela Lugosi is at his intense best in this film.

What're your favorite classic horror movies?

This article is from Nicholas Pell of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. With movie ticket prices averaging $7.94 nationally (including matinee and children’s ticket prices), a typical night at the movies for a family of four could cost in excess of $50, including popcorn and drinks. (See also: 25 Great Movies About Money)

Instead of paying full price at the cinema, consider some of these 10 ways to save on movies.

1. Take Advantage of Matinees

Most movie theaters offer cheaper tickets for earlier show times. Matinee prices at local cinemas could cost as little as $4, while larger theater chains charge around $8-10, depending on your location. The earlier you go, the better (some cinemas have tiered pricing structures: before 12 p.m., before 5 or 6 p.m., and after).

2. Bargain Tuesdays and Sundays

If seeing a movie in the morning isn’t possible for your work or school schedule, many movie theaters also offer cheaper ticket prices on select days of the week. Tuesday is generally one of the slower days for movie theaters (along with Sunday), hence the ticket discounts offered on these days. Some theaters charge half price admission, while others charge around $5 per ticket (again, prices depend on where you live).

3. Rethink Midnight Premieres

Midnight premieres have become something of a cultural phenomenon in recent years, with hordes of fans showing up to be the first ones to see "Harry Potter," "The Avengers," "The Dark Knight Rises," and other highly anticipated films. Movie theaters love midnight premieres as much as the moviegoers do; they’re able to charge more for tickets to the late night showings. Even with inflated prices, premiere tickets still sell out for the top movies. For a frugal movie fan, however, you’re better off waiting at least until the next morning (or until it hits cable, if everyone agrees it's a dud) for new releases.

4. Free Movie Screenings

If you Google "free movie screenings" or check your local newspaper’s entertainment section, you might be surprised to find a limited selection of movies screening in advance. Studios use movie screenings to gauge the crowd’s reaction and to generate early buzz for the film. It’s a win-win situation, because studios get publicity and the moviegoers get free tickets.

5. Avoid the Concession Stand

Here’s an oft-said but seldom-followed mantra of saving at the movies — don’t buy food or drinks at the theater. The markups are quite high compared to what you’ll pay for popcorn, candy, and soda elsewhere, so either eat a meal beforehand or bring your own water and snacks, if you can.

6. Support Dollar Theaters

If you don’t mind waiting several weeks after a film is initially released, then why not see the movie in a dollar theater? Waiting it out can save you a bundle on movie ticket prices, and the only difference is when you get to see the movie in theaters. Alternatively, you could just wait until the film comes out on DVD and rent it from Netflix or RedBox or stream it from Amazon or iTunes.

7. Ditch 3D

Ever since the smashing success of "Avatar" in 3D, more and more studios have been releasing films in both regular and 3D formats. Unfortunately for moviegoers, ticket prices for 3D films are more expensive (a few dollars on top of the regular ticket price), and for some, 3D films cause headaches. And while some films are genuinely shot as 3D, others are merely converted from 2D to 3D in post production, which puts a damper on the 3D viewing experience. We managed just fine before the 3D craze; save your money and see the 2D movie instead.

8. Sign Up for Discounts

Many movie theaters offer discounts to regular patrons who sign up for their movie clubs or like them on Facebook. Some theaters also have customer surveys in which you could win free movie tickets after submitting the form.

9. Get Credit Card Movie Rewards

If you own a rewards credit card, you could get some discounts or even free tickets at the movie theater. Several credit cards offer movie rewards to their cardholders:

Disney’s Visa® from Chase (redeem points for movie tickets)

Citibank Thank You® Rewards (redeem points for Regal Entertainment gift cards)

Chase Freedom (which currently offers 5% cash back on movie theater purchases)

Visa Signature (20% off a $25 Fandango gift card and if you buy two tickets for a Friday showing, you get the second ticket free)

10. Buy Tickets in Bulk

Buying tickets in bulk is another great way to cut back on movie expenses. Bulktix.com offers tickets in bundles. Major chains such as AMC and Regal Entertainment allow you to purchase mass quantities (50 or more) for prices as low as $6.50-$8.00. If paying this much money on movie tickets upfront is too much, then consider splitting the cost and tickets bundle with friends, family, and coworkers. This way, everyone gets a sweet discount on movie tickets.

How do you save money at the movies? Couponing, repurposing products, and growing your own food are certainly excellent ways to cut costs, but there is also legitimately free stuff you can take advantage of too. (See also: Big List of Birthday Freebies)

Here are five often-free things to consider.

1. Free Meals for Kids

There are lots of restaurants that offer a time slot where kids under 12 can eat for free as long as mom or dad is buying a meal too. My family loves going to Friendly’s to celebrate birthdays, and on Tuesdays your child’s meal is free all day. Mr. Free Stuff has a list of 101 restaurants listed by the days kids get free food. Going out to eat is often one of the first things cut from a family’s fun list in the interest of saving, but free meals can put dining out back on the activity list. Find out which restaurants near you offer kid deals, and you may also find many that offer incentives for adults as well.

2. BOGO Deals

OK, so you do have to spend some money with this one, but you really can’t beat a buy one, get one free offer. For back to school shopping, my daughter and I each got a pair of sneakers using a BOGO offer, which was great since I wouldn’t have been able to get any for myself otherwise. Many retailers are capitalizing on the popularity of these get-one deals and sponsor all-day sales. Keep tabs on store fliers or sign up for store information emails so you know when free stuff is available. Grocery stores are also a great place to stock up on necessities for free. Use caution with BOGO deals, though, as you should only buy what you truly need — otherwise you are doing just the opposite of saving money.

3. Books and Movies

The Internet has a plethora of free books, television shows, and movies. If you have been contemplating suspending your cable services in the interest of saving money, you can still access plenty of entertainment online at no cost. You can also get free books and movies at your local library.

4. Product Samples

There are a lot of ways to get free samples of products you use every day. Manufacturers provide free samples in advertising, when you register through their company website or social media sites, and at in-store kiosks. Check for coupons for free samples of new products just put on the market. It may also help to know people in the right places. Those who sell for a living are likely to have free samples of products sitting in their basement. For instance, my mom is a pediatric nurse, so I have all the free cold medicine my child could ever need. I also have a friend who sells beauty products; I shouldn’t have to buy shampoo for years to come. Free samples are manufactured to be given away to consumers, so don’t be shy about accepting them.

5. Entertainment and Personal Development

Boredom often translates into spending. Many people hit the mall when they need something to do, or they find other ways to spend money. Rather than mourn the loss of fun in your family life, consider making a difference instead. There are many organizations in your own community that would love for you (and your family) to volunteer. No matter what you love, you can find ways to enrich your life by helping others. Volunteer at the local animal shelter, hospital, or in any number of community groups.

Many times over the years I have been a part of some great events at no cost to me. I got to eat free, enjoy the activity, and give back to my community. It is a lot of fun being behind the scenes and using my skills to do the marketing for various events. Volunteering is also a great addition to your resume, and you can make some amazing connections with people you may not otherwise have met. I cannot count the number of opportunities that have come to me through my volunteering connections, including ones that added to my income.

This article is from Tisha Tolar of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. It may also be that you crave something vintage or out of production. Lucky for you, it’s possible to see obscure and amazing titles unavailable on DVD or via streaming by looking to classic VHS tapes — and you can usually also get them for free! (See also: Never Pay for a RedBox DVD Rental Again)

If you’re not convinced that VHS is for you, I recommend you review why I still think VHS tapes rock. Then, use the following methods to score hundreds of the sturdy little films for your collection.

1. Hit Up Garage Sales

Most serious sellers won’t be asking for much for these, and you can usually find dozens dumped, sans case, in the FREE pile. If you do see tapes for sale, ask if you can just take them. Many times, they are the last things to go, and sellers will be happy to clear the area of these clunky, space-hogging dinosaurs.

2. Check Craigslist

As long as there is an actual “CDs/DVDs/VHS” category on the site, you can expect people to ask cash for their collections. Unless they are mint, Disney films, or part of a large set, however, you won’t be expected to pay more than a quarter for these films. If you’re set on not paying a nickel, however, skip this portion of Craigslist, and go straight for the FREE section.

3. Ask Your Local Library

Many libraries are moving to Blu-Ray and DVD, and they no longer have a need for their VHS tapes. You can usually find these cast-offs for free in their annual book sale, although a free-will offering is encouraged. If you feel obliged to pay for something, buy some books you are interested in, and help them take the tapes off their hands. (You can also call them ahead of time and ask if you can pick up any they don’t want. Some are just plain obscure, and if you save them space in their sale, they will be eternally grateful.)

4. Let Your Friends Know

At any given time, at least one of my friends or family is moving, downsizing, or decluttering. I know that they are throwing VHS tapes out, so why not put in a word with your crew to have them set these beauties aside? Just be sure to promptly pick them up (no leaving them there to frustrate your friends) and give a nice “thanks” when you leave.

5. Update Your Status

It’s a good idea to make “Looking for VHS tapes” a tagline for your Facebook and Twitter. Try it!

Now that you’re swimming in new movies to watch, there are a few things you should know about your new collection. First, it’s possible that tapes (especially those without cases) won’t perform perfectly. Magnets can erase the data, and tape film can get twisted, causing the audio and video to crackle. You are taking a risk by starting a film that you aren’t sure you can finish, but, for many films, it’s worth the chance.

You will also need to have a reliable VCR to watch all these tapes. If you also have an older VCR (aren’t they all old?), you can choose to clean it occasionally with either a wet or dry tape cleaner, available on Amazon and other online retailers. Most VCRs last a very long time, however, so be diligent about keeping it dust-free to ensure many more happy years. (You can also still find tape rewinders to help prolong the life of your VCR. These are dedicated machines that do nothing but rewind tapes and were made popular by video stores that used them to rewind tapes that customers had forgotten about.) True, it takes compromise and adjustments to live simply and conservatively, but the sacrifices are often much less than what people think. Let me illustrate this point with a simple example: movie-watching options.

Movie Theaters

When I was young, I went to the cinema a ton. It just seemed like a good way to kill time. If those $50 million opening box office debuts are any indication, many Americans agree with me. But you've got to wonder, what does $10 times every other weekend add up to? It's $260 a year for 26 movies.

Discounted Movie Tickets

I've seen them at Costco, the apartment complex I used to live at offered them, and my wife's workplace also had a way to get them. It takes a little more work than going to the movie theater and just paying with your credit card, but you are saving quite a bit: $2.50 a pop in my experience. Go this route and your expenses become $195 for the same 26 movies.

On Demand TV

Nowadays, you can order movies right on your television set. The prices are around $2 a pop, so you are only paying $52 for 26 movies a year. Yes, you need to wait a few months, but do you watch movies because they are good, or do you actually watch them because they are new?

Netflix

If you watch more than a few movies a month, then movie costs can go way up. Luckily, you can subscribe to services like Netflix, and for $9, you can watch a practically unlimited amount of movies, soap operas, and other TV shows for the entire month. You can give the service a spin via those Netflix free trial coupons too, but let's not even count that, because $9 a month is still pretty good, especially considering that some people are able to use this to substitute their $70-a-month cable TV bills.

Redbox

Many grocery stores, pharmacies, and convenience stores have these DVD kiosks where you can rent the newest movies for $1 a night. If you always return the DVD the next day, your movie-every-other-week expense drops down to $26 a year.

Free Redbox

There are actually quite a few Redbox coupon codes being circulated on the internet, like the code DVDONME, which works once for every credit card that you own. If you are diligent about finding the codes, which is easy with coupon sites these days, then your movie expenses, no matter how many movies you watch, drop down to $0 (or thereabouts).

Now you might argue that going to the movie theater is not the same as watching free movies via coupon codes, and it's not. But many people are willing to wait the few extra months if it means saving $500 a year and still be able to watch a movie once a week. $500 may not be a ton to some of you out there, but multiply that by the infinite number of spending decisions that we make, and it quickly adds up. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide what's right for you, but how much you save, how much you spend, and how you run your life are personal choices that you have to live with. You may not need the money now, but you might one of these days.

Financial decisions may not be easy, but they're completely yours.

This article is from David Ning of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. If the kids are not enrolled in camp programs which are in their own right pricey, the empty hours can weigh heavily and lead to an excess of wallet-emptying entertainment. Here are some things that kids can do this summer for free or for cheap:

Free bowling. The AMF chain of bowling alleys offers a kids club granting children two free games EVERY DAY all summer long. You sign up through your local alley (the Web site lists locations in 33 states), and individual locations may have rules and caveats like specific hours when free games can be played. The freebies can't be used by large groups like day care outings.

Free movies and free or discounted books: On Frugalista, my new blog about Chicago-area bargains, I outlined the a number of free and cheap summer movie series for kids as well as the summer reading programs at major bookstores and libraries (the store programs usually give kids a free book or at least a discount; the library programs offer varying goodies). Most of these programs are available nationally or you can find the same at your local theaters, stores and libraries.

Cheap museums and zoos. If you have multiple kids and the whole summer to kill, it can be worth it to invest in a pass to a local kids' museum. But if you live in an area with lots of museums like I do, you'll want to buy a pass that gets you into multiple places. In this post I share the secret ticket that gets you into the most places for the lowest price. An even cheaper strategy than the above is to stick to museum and zoo free days -- check the Web site of your local -- or to latch onto other families that have memberships and can bring guests (reciprocity is nice!).

You all know about using your local library, which usually has the added advantage of free air conditioning, but newer parents may not realize that most urban and suburban park districts offer low-cost or free activities too. In our neighborhood, teen-aged park employees bring a "fun truck" to the local playground once a week with a slip and slide and other delights.

Fairs. You won't get off scott-free at the state or county fair; in fact you'll shell out for entrance, overpriced ice cream and corn, and ride tickets, and maybe even parking. But there are lots of things to keep little ones busy most of the day for free, like looking at animals and watching animal shows, and the costs pale in comparison to an amusement park. Speaking of which ...

Amusement park discounts. Six Flags and its ilk are never cheap, but there are ways to pay less. If you live nearby and your kids are old enough to be dropped off, a season pass for them can really pay for itself pretty easily. Even if you're going for one day, check the park's Web site and do a little Googling for promotions; right now Six Flags tickets are buy-one-get-one online; you also often see discounts on soda cans, at fast-food restaurants, and the like.

Mix in a bit of the always free. We're taking advantage of many of the above programs intermittently during the summer, but I unabashedly admit that my kids' regular summer days include a lot of less-structured free activities. Playing in the backyard, visiting local playgrounds, sitting on the porch watching for the ice cream man (OK that will cost me a few bucks if he actually shows up but he hardly EVER drives down our street), hitting rummage sales with mom (now that my oldest is 5, giving her $2-4 at a rummage sale will keep her happily absorbed in bargain-hunting while I do my own shopping), playing with neighbors and friends, and reading (she's been devouring The Boxcar Children mysteries) have been the prime activities so far. Oh, and even a little work beyond the normal "pick up your toys": Now that the 5-year-old understands that money can get her toys at rummage sales, she's become a willing weed bounty hunter in the backyard.

This article is from Carrie Kirby of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
