Try looking through your DVR or Netflix queue! These are some of the five cheapest TV and film fanatic vacation spots.

1. Breaking Bad: Albuquerque, NM

Got a hankering for an action-packed road trip on the cheap? Heisenberg-hat wearing fans of Breaking Bad will want to pack up and drive to Albuquerque, New Mexico for a few days. Not only are there tons of real-life standing locations where Vince Gilligan and crew shot Breaking Bad, but there are even self-guided and guided tours!

Key Costs: Your biggest will likely be gasoline for driving to and from your place of origin, and prices vary across the U.S. Accommodations are cheap and plentiful in Albuquerque — try staying in the well-priced Hotel Andaluz. Meals at Los Pollos Hermanos are very cheap!

2. Best Exotic Marigold Hotel: Jaipur, India

This smash-hit movie (and sequel) has inspired lots of empty-nesters to visit India. While you may not be flush enough to retire there, you can probably afford a two-week trip to Jaipur, one of the most beautiful cities in India.

Key Costs: The biggest expense will be airfare from your nearest international airport to the Jaipur airport, which could be approximately $1,600. However, once you are in India, one can live quite comfortably for $20 a day, and extremely well for $50 a day. Food and entertainment are cheap enough so you can splurge on plush accommodations.

3. Game of Thrones: Northern Ireland

Addicted to the racy, bloody, and exciting land of Westeros? Much of Game of Thrones is shot in Northern Ireland, where they shoot much of "The North," from The Haunted Forest to Winterfell. Come to Ireland for gorgeous, scenic tours of the misty moors, then stay for nice B&Bs and authentic Irish food and drink. While you're there, soak in some real history by touring Belfast and seeing the birthplace of the Titanic and famous prison Crumlin Road Gaol.

Key Costs: Airfare will the the lion's share of the costs, approximately $1500 per person. This is a great time to visit anywhere in Europe because the euro is not as strong against the dollar: one euro is about $1.12. This means if you stay thrifty, lodging, food, and entertainment will be about as much as they would be in America.

4. The Hangover Part II: Thailand

One of the highest grossing films to have shot in Thailand, The Hangover Part II might inspire those looking for a raucous, indulgent trip. While a Hangover-themed tour is certainly possible, Thailand is also a great destination for nature exploring. Visit beautiful elephant reserves, enjoy the beaches, and hike a rainforest.

Key Costs: Your biggest expense here will also be airfare, as it can run approximately $1,200. Once you arrive, though, it's a bargain. One can live very comfortably for under $40 a day if staying on the mainland where the prices are generally cheaper than the surrounding islands.

5. James Bond: Mexico City

So many great films were shot in Mexico: from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid to Y Tu Mama Tambien. The James Bond franchise has shot several of its films in Mexico, including License to Kill, Tomorrow Never Dies, Quantum of Solace, and the upcoming Spectre. The new movie highlights the Zocalo in historic and beautiful Mexico City, where the Aztecs once ruled and where one can now find very hip shopping and entertainment. If you travel to the coast, you can even enjoy a James Bond speedboat tour!

Key Costs: Mexico makes for a great, cheap vacation with its beautiful beaches (where many movies shoot instead of the Bahamas!), cheap hotels, and great food. Flights can be upwards of $700, but those living on west coast and southwest regions can manage an easy road trip. One dollar equals about 15 pesos, so your money will go very far.

Have you ever traveled to scratch your film or TV fandom itch? where'd you go?

This article is from Amanda Meadows of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. If you love to watch movies like I do, but hate spending a major chunk of change just to see one, bookmark this list of ways you'll never have to pay for movies again. (See also: Watch Movies in the Theater for Free)

1. Free Screenings

Granted, it helps if you live a major city like New York or L.A. — those cities host screenings very frequently — but there may be screening opportunities near you. These screenings are always movies that will be released in the near future, which means that not only do you get to see a free movie, you get to see it before most people. Heed this warning, however: If you plan to attend a screening, it's best to arrive a couple hours in advance to get a place in line. The screening is always overbooked to ensure maximum attendance; once they reach the limit, you're out of luck even if you're still in line, and that's just a bummer.

2. Free Redbox Rentals

I caught onto the Redbox freebie game many years ago when I discovered that I could turn one promo code into free DVDs for as many debit or credit cards that I have. Because the code is linked to your card account, to get the most bang for your buck (or lack thereof in this case), just pull out a different piece of plastic at the kiosk. This is a great trick to extend the life of free codes. To ensure that you keep the free codes coming, sign up for text and email alerts from Redbox and check sites dedicated to code sharing, like Inside Redbox. Keep in mind, however, that the rental is usually only free for the first night; the DVD must be returned the next day before 9 p.m. or you'll start getting charged. And if that happens, it defeats the whole purpose. (See also: Never Pay for a Redbox DVD Rental Again)

3. Free Outdoor Movies

One of my favorite summer pastimes is enjoying a free outdoor movie. In New York City, these screenings are abundant — but they've also become increasingly popular in many cities and towns across the country. Free outdoor movies are an excellent, romantic date night that'll keep the cash flow in check, but they're just as great with a group of friends. Pack your snacks, drinks, and blankets, and enjoy a flick in the great outdoors. What could be better than that? (See also: 50+ Fun Nights Out for $10 or Less)

4. Free Movie Nights at Bars

Your local bars are always trying new promotions to get bodies in the chairs that will order food and drinks, and one way some bars do this is to host a movie night. I've been to several different movie nights at different bars, and I've enjoyed myself every time. Often the establishments hosting these free movie nights offer a free snack — often popcorn — too. This activity is worth looking into — just do a search online to see what's in your area.

5. Hulu

You have to pay for newer and mobile content via Hulu Plus, but if you're into watching a limited number of oldies but goodies, you can sift through the free content on Hulu — which isn't the easiest task since most of its offerings are locked without a subscription. Still, it's there, and you can take advantage of it.

6. Crackle

Content-streaming site Crackle may seem too good to be true, but it isn't. Similar to Hulu (but with a much larger selection of free movies), Crackle offers full-length Hollywood movies in all genres. Even better, you'll actually want to watch these movies, unlike some of the other free sites.

7. Popcornflix

Yet another free-movie-streaming service, but the selection on Popcornflix mostly includes obscure, low-budget, straight-to-DVD movies that most people have never heard of. If you're into those kinds of movies, this is your new Saturday night obsession.

8. YouTube

It's hard to find a full-length movie on YouTube because it has time restrictions on the length of posted videos, but you can find movies (albeit not always the best quality or selection) in several parts that you can watch back to back.

9. Dailymotion

Like YouTube, this video-sharing service hosts a limited selection of movies, but you'll have to dig.

10. Trade With Friends

Do you have a sizeable collection of DVDs? Does one or more of your friends have a sizeable collection of DVDs? It makes sense then to create a sharing system among those friends and swap DVDs that you haven't seen before. Everybody's a winner.

11. Download to Your Computer

I know what you're thinking — isn't that illegal? Most of the time it is, but there are sites that offer free downloads for public domain movies. You can find lots of movies in many categories. Good places to start include Public Domain Torrents, Internet Archive Movies, and Public Domain Flicks. (See also: Great Horror Movies You Can Watch for Free)

12. Your Local Library

Have you been to the library lately? If it's been a while, I'll let you in on a little secret — the library lets you borrow more than books now. You can take home free DVD rentals. This is a great way to stay entertained on a weekend when you're minding your money even more.

13. Research Small Screenings Around Town

Sometimes the smaller museums and organizations host events in which a free movie will be screened. I once went to an event that was screening an LGBT movie that I didn't know anything about beforehand but ended up enjoying. These opportunities may be in your area, too. A good way to tap into these events is to search for them on Meetup (you might make some new friends while you're at it) or check your area's events calendar. If I was terrified, I was hooked.

Psychologists say that some people are wired to respond to the adrenaline rush that comes with scary movies. These are the same people who tend to like roller coasters (which I do).

I've compiled a list of 20 of my favorite flicks for Halloween, and have grouped them for different audiences and age groups. In it, Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town and becomes so enchanted with it that he aims to become Santa Claus. Unfortunately, he can't quite get it right. This one's rated PG, but it's pretty safe for all ages. But while the sisters are there for a good time, part of that involves stealing children's souls. Of course, it's up to the kids in the neighborhood to save the day. This movie is funny, weird, and includes some great musical interludes.

The Addams Family (1991) (Rated: PG-13)

This family might be creepy, kooky, mysterious, and spooky, but they're also quite a loving — and loveable — bunch in their own, eccentric way. The ghosts decide to scare off the new inhabitants, but fail miserably and end up summoning Beetlejuice, "the aferlife's leading bio-exorcist." Of course, this scum-covered, bug-eating ghoul proves to be more of a rascal than a relief. At the time of its release, "Night of the Living Dead" had unprecedented levels of gore and violence. As a result, it caused some outrage. Even so, it's pretty tame by today's standards and should provide a thrill for both brave teens and adults. Don't watch this one alone at night.

Poltergeist (1982) (Rated: PG)

This is one of the all-time great haunted house movies (and one of my favorites). It touches on all the things that tend to scare people, like scary shadows, monsters in the dark, and thunderstorms. And, while some people scoff at the old special effects, I think the scariest scenes are the ones that don't use them. Strange as it might sound to us standing on this side of history, no one thought that owning the copyright to "Night of the Living Dead" was terribly important at the time. That's why you can find it just about anywhere, from Netflix to YouTube. (See also: How to Get Netflix to Play on Your TV)

"Night of the Living Dead" isn't the only example of a public domain film that's downright bone-chilling. I fancy myself a bit of an expert on the weird, the old, the macabre… and the public domain. Step into my horror crypt to see what's out there totally for free that kids from 8 to 80 will enjoy.

Night of the Living Dead

This is the godfather of all public domain horror films. For those who haven't seen it, this is the film that transformed zombies from the directed automaton slaves of voodoo priests into shambling legions of undead. It's widely credited, alongside more decidedly adult fare such as "Bonnie and Clyde," with ushering in the modern MPAA ratings system. It's certainly not "tame" by today's standards, but it is good for bigger kids. Adults will have fun picking apart all the obvious metaphors about race and social conformity, to say nothing of the paranoid terror of being locked down in a farm house battling an army of ghouls.

A Bucket of Blood

This one is a little more light and fun than the above. This Roger Corman opus is your basic Faust story. A wanna-be beatnik just can't make art until he accidentally kills a cat, which he then coats in plaster. Soon, everyone wants to buy his surprisingly life-like (dead-like?) sculptures… and there's only one way to do that. Best on a double feature with "Little Shop of Horrors" — the two were filmed the same weekend, have a similar plot, and share many sets. A lot of fun, and as many laughs as scares. (See also: Halloween Drink Recipes to Scare Up Good Times)

Little Shop of Horrors

Basically the same story as the above, except a lovable loser who wants to get the girl uses a man-eating plant for fame instead of dead body sculptures. Look for Corman stalwart Dick Miller (star of "A Bucket of Blood") in a cameo as a man eating plants in a film about a man-eating plant.

Freaks

This one is… definitely not for the little ones, despite being from 1932. The backstory on this is that the producers wanted to out-horror "Frankenstein" and succeeded a little too well. It's a classic revenge story about carnies getting the better of a woman and a strongman who wrongs one of their own. It's also a wonderful tale about acceptance, friendship, and the amazing things people can do in the face of adversity. The scene where the limbless man lights his own cigarette isn't faked. On the contrary, he rolled the cigarette himself off camera. Remade by David F. Friedman as She-Freak, but that one is definitely not for kids.

Horror Hotel

"Horror Hotel" is Christopher Lee at his bone-chilling best. Especially for our readers in New England, "Horror Hotel" is a lot of fun, a gothic horror film that tells the tale of a female grad student investigating witchcraft. She runs up against a reincarnated 17th Century witch who sacrifices virgins to maintain her youth… and has just found her latest sacrifice.

White Zombie

This is the original zombie movie, or at least the oldest one that people still watch. Remember what I said earlier about "Night of the Living Dead" reinventing zombies? Well, don't expect shambling crowds of dead-eyed ghouls crying out for "braaaaaaaaains." Instead, look for mind-controlled slaves of voodoo lords. Bela Lugosi is at his intense best in this film.

What're your favorite classic horror movies?

This article is from Nicholas Pell of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. (See also: Financial Lessons From "The Hunger Games")

1. Life’s Too Short to Work at a Job You Hate

Peter Gibbons hates his job. Every day is a prison sentence. In fact, he confesses to a shrink that every day is the worst day of his life:

So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life.

His best friends and co-workers Michael Bolton and Samir Nagheenanajar also dislike their jobs but not with the same disdain and loathing as Peter. Even the squirrelly Milton Waddams has major issues, as he is constantly moved and demoted. And across the street, Peter’s girlfriend Joanna hates her job at Chotchkie’s, where flair must be worn to keep the customers happy.

In short, everybody in “Office Space” seems to hate their jobs.

In a bad economy, people are thankful to have any job at all, so advising you all to quit your awful jobs and wait for something better to come along is not what I have in mind. But if you don’t have a better job lined up, work at making your current job easier to tolerate. Many of the big problems are never going to change, but you can change your outlook on them. I’ve done it myself, and sometimes I have to remind myself to do it or fall into the trap of whining and complaining. Don’t let hate, anger, and apathy rule your working life.

2. You Have the Ability to Change Your Work Environment

Directly related to the point above, "Office Space" shows us what happens when a guy who hates his job makes it completely livable. When Peter gets hypnotized by the psychiatrist, his paradigm shifts. He decides to lay in bed all day and not go into the office on the weekend. He becomes completely honest with “the Bobs,” the consultants brought in to make staff cut recommendations, and it does him credit. He removes one of the walls of his cubicle to see the scenery. He changes what was seemingly unchangeable, and he becomes better for it.

Sleeping in all day when we should be at work is probably not an option for most of us. We can’t go hacking up the furniture and building. But we can make changes, however small, that help us out. If you really hate your work environment, see if you can change it. Maybe you can be moved to a different area. Maybe you can get a better view. Is the lighting awful? Can you have it switched off, and bring in your own ambient lighting? Can you work flexible hours, maybe to avoid bad traffic or work around a schedule you prefer? Employers are more accommodating than you’d think, and even the smallest changes could make a big difference to your happiness.

3. Your Dreams Can Come True (in the Strangest Ways)

Consider Tom Smykowski, the mustachioed anxiety-ridden “people person” who was one of the first to get axed by “the Bobs.” He had an idea. Not a great idea. Not even a mediocre idea. It was the “Jump to Conclusions” mat, and it was his version of the Pet Rock. Basically, he took the Twister mat concept and put different conclusions on it, that the user could them jump to.

As Michael Bolton said, with a sigh, “That’s the worst idea I’ve ever heard in my life...”

But it was Tom’s baby. He loved it. We wanted it to happen. And when he got fired, his failed suicide attempt resulted in a bizarre accident that got him a seven-figure settlement from the auto insurance company.

Yes, he was in a neck brace and back brace, he and broke every major bone in his body. But he was also the creator of the Jump to Conclusions mat! His dream came true, and at a time when he should have been at his lowest.

So whether you have a terrible idea like the Jump to Conclusions mat, or something that actually has a chance of being bought and used, never give up on your dream. Life has this habit of delivering right when you least expect it.

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Visit the Therapist

If you’re having major problems with your job, your direction in life, or even your relationship, then do not rule out therapy. Most insurance plans cover therapy with a co-pay for at least a few months of weekly sessions. And once you get over the hurdle of admitting you need help, those sessions can help you find some balance and peace.

Peter went to an occupational therapist who tried to hypnotize him, and during the process, the therapist died and left Peter in a trance. The trance became the most significant improvement in his adult life. Or at least, it was the catalyst.

Therapy can be a great way to help you relieve some of the burden. Talking about your problems can help you resolve them. And you could finally figure out the direction you want to take in life, if you haven’t done so already.

5. Deal With Small Irritations Before They Become Big Problems

Corporate accounts payable, Nina speaking. Just a moment! Corporate accounts payable, Nina speaking. Just a moment! Corporate accounts payable, Nina speaking. Just a moment! Corporate accounts payable, Nina speaking. Just a moment!

If you hear that hour after hour, day after day, eventually you’re going to snap. And you can’t snap if you want to keep your job.

Find a way to neutralize the little annoyances before the straw breaks the camel’s back. Maybe it requires the wearing of headphones or moving to a different place in the building. Sometimes all it takes is a little conversation. I have heard stories at my current job of a woman who used to spray perfume and deodorant at least once an hour. There was a cloud of the stuff hanging over her cubicle. It was resolved with just a quick conversation, but not after several people went months complaining to each other but not to the person who could do something about it.

6. It’s Not a Good Job If It Makes You Unhappy

Two people in the movie start out with what many would consider “good jobs” only to end up with jobs that most would consider awful. Peter goes from working an office job, with a suit, tie, and business card, to cleaning up on a construction crew. He’s happier with his hard hat and shovel, working in the sunshine, than he ever was in his grey cubicle.

We also meet Steve, a guy selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door. He pretends to be a former crack addict, but he’s actually a former software engineer, just like Peter, who now makes more money selling magazines. And he likes it.

So, don’t think that the job you’re in is the one you need to stay in. Don’t even think the career you chose is set in stone. Life gives us plenty of chances to change paths. We can retrain. We can set up our own home businesses. I’ve talked to several people this week who quit corporate jobs to start eBay businesses, work their own hours, and avoid the kind of stress that comes with corporate politics.

7. Get Your Facts Straight Before You Act

There are several instances in “Office Space” that illustrate the dangers of hearing things second hand, or misunderstanding what you’ve been told.

Peter believes his girlfriend once had a relationship with his boss, Bill Lumbergh, a vile, soulless pig of a man. Turns out it was a different Lumbergh, but that didn’t stop them almost breaking up.

Peter assumes that the software he installed to steal fractions of pennies from his company would result in a lenient, country club prison sentence with conjugal visits. He was way off.

Michael assumes that because he works hard, and Peter is flaky, it will be Peter that will be the one getting marching orders from the efficiency experts. Actually, both he and his friend Samir are getting the ax. Peter is getting a promotion.

You never know what anyone’s plans are until you see them yourself or you hear them from several legitimate sources. So, don’t worry about rumors, and don’t play the gossip games. They will only hurt you and your career.

Can you recall any work/life lessons from "Office Space" I may have missed? Set on Christmas Eve in the 1940s, the story is told through a series of flashbacks, an alternate reality of what the world would look like if main character George Bailey had never been born, and, finally, a happy resolution in the present day.

Described as a reverse “A Christmas Carol” with George’s nemesis Mr. Henry F. Potter playing a Scrooge-like role, the movie has many financial lessons that are relevant today. (See also: 21 Personal Finance Lessons From Harry Potter)

Financial Crises Can Cause Tremendous Stress

George Bailey went berserk and contemplated suicide in a financial crisis. As the top executive of a local financial institution, Bailey Bros. Building and Loan Association, he was responsible for regulatory compliance. But when his Uncle Billy, a key employee, lost an $8,000 bank deposit on Christmas Eve (which coincided with a visit from the bank examiner), he faced criminal charges for embezzlement unless he could repay the money immediately. Though he was innocent, George questioned all of his life, career, and financial decisions that led to this situation.

Some Business Owners Don’t Have Your Best Interests at Heart

Mr. Henry F. Potter, a wealthy business owner who gained control over the local bank, didn’t care about those who lived and worked in the community. George seemed to be one of the few people who recognized the potential long-term effect of Potter’s power over the local economy. As a result, he spent a lot of energy protecting residents from Potter’s plans to control real estate and business development in the area. When his guardian angel showed George what the town would have looked like if he had never lived, you get an idea of the social and economic conditions that might exist if Potter's evil intentions went unchecked.

A Family Member May or May Not Be Your Best Employee

Uncle Billy, the brother of George’s father, nearly ruined the business. He drank on the job and didn't seem to be a productive employee even in the best of times. George could have hired a better employee or given him lesser responsibilities, somehow finding a way to show generosity in a way that didn’t compromise the business.

On the other hand, George's younger brother Harry Bailey seemed to be a valuable asset to his father-in-law’s glass manufacturing company. So, managing a successful business means being discriminating about your choice of employees.

Build an Emergency Fund

George was thrifty but didn't have an emergency fund. He worked for years to set aside the money to travel and attend college, so he was capable of saving. Though he didn't spend needlessly, he also didn't pay himself first, but rather put others' needs ahead of his own. As a result, he didn't have the means to save his company from disaster.

Not All Financial Institutions Are Run Alike

There was a significant difference between the lending policies of Potter’s bank and Bailey Bros. Building and Loan Association. When making a decision about financial services, compare interest rates, fees, etc., as they may vary widely among institutions.

Resourcefulness Can Save Money

Mary, George's wife, saved money by buying a fixer-upper and making repairs herself while she was raising their family. Even though this process was time consuming as well as frustrating to George at times, she was able to help provide shelter for herself, George, and their four children.

Progressive Lending Policies Can Fuel the Local Economy

Building and Loan Associations provided real estate loans to families at a time when short-term mortgage loans were the norm. When these loans were called, often after five years (as opposed to a more typical 30-year term today), most people couldn’t afford to pay the outstanding balance. As a result, banks foreclosed on many homes. The types of loans that George’s business provided gave the working class a better opportunity to own a home and helped to create a thriving local economy.

Companies Often Purchase the Competition to Gain Market Share

Potter attempted to buy members’ shares of the local building and loan association as a way to stifle competition. Later, he tried to lure George from the financial institution by offering him a compensation package that far exceeded the business valuation. Potter’s goal was to eliminate cheaper alternatives for area residents so that he could gain market share and later raise prices.

Welcoming New Industries to Town Can Help the Community (and You)

When Mary's former beau, Sam Wainwright, mentioned that his company was going to build a factory in Rochester, George asked him to use a vacant facility in Bedford Falls instead. Later, employees of Sam’s business were likely among those who helped bail out the Baileys.

Investing in New Technologies Could Increase Your Wealth

George turned down Sam’s offer to invest in his new plastics venture, which later made Sam very wealthy. He may not have had the extra money at the time, but just because he personally wasn’t going to leave Bedford Falls for a higher-paying and more exciting job shouldn’t have excluded the possibility of investing in a potentially ground-breaking business.

In Marriage, a Financially Compatible Spouse Is Crucial to Happiness

Husband-and-wife team George and Mary agreed on decisions that impacted the family’s financial status. They stood together as they made career and money moves that focused on community betterment rather than personal wealth, such as staying in their hometown and forgoing a honeymoon to keep the family business open. Most importantly, though, Mary understood the financial consequences of the couple’s priorities and was not bitter or regretful about the path that they chose.

Relationships Are More Valuable Than Money

When George saw the reality of life in his hometown without his presence, he realized that the investments he had made in relationships were worthy of setting aside travel plans and career ambitions. And, ultimately, he was redeemed by these relationships. Mary alerted friends and family to his troubles, and people brought cash to reconcile the building and loan association's shortfall.

The big take-away is that we can use our financial resources as well as our talent and time to lead impactful lives. Not only can we inspire and encourage our family and friends but we can influence the direction of our local communities and global events.

What financial lessons have you learned from "It's a Wonderful Life"?

This article is from Julie Rains of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. After you factor in soda, candy, and popcorn (for those who like to do it up big when they catch the latest blockbuster), well, you may have to ask your boss for a raise.

But it’s times like these, when prices for life’s simple pleasures spin out of control, that we have to take a stand and hit those greedy bigwigs where it hurts — the pocket. To help you convey the message that we’re not gonna take it anymore, here are four easy tips on how to host a frugal movie night in the comfort of your own home. (See also: How to Throw a Fabulous (and Frugal!) Dinner Party)

1. Choose the Movie

Remember back in the day when the only option you had for a movie rental was Blockbuster? I do, and I remember being quite excited to stop by on a Friday afternoon to pick up a flick I was anticipating. Nevermind that the price was $4 for a two-day rental, either; Blockbuster had a lock on the market, and we didn’t know any better. Until Redbox came along, that is, and completely changed the home-movie rental game. Blockbuster was already suffering at the beginning of the new millennium, and the now-ubiquitous DVD kiosks put the final nail in Blockbuster’s coffin — and to that I say good riddance.

When I started using Redbox back in 2005 (time sure flies, doesn’t it?), I thought it was too good to be true. A DVD rental for $1 per night? Get out of town! I was in heaven. If that made me ecstatic, imagine my elation when I discovered Redbox codes that scored me free rentals. Best. Deal. Ever. You, too, can score a free rental (if you haven’t exhausted all the codes by now) by checking Redbox Codes for the latest updates. It’s worth noting, however, that the price of a Redbox rental has increased over the years to $1.20 per night — but that’s still a steal as far as I’m concerned. I mean, really, how long do you need to keep a movie?

If you don’t have a Redbox near you, there are other ways you can choose a movie to watch on the cheap:

Browse your channel guide a few days to a week or two in advance of movie night and set your DVR to record a film you want to watch. I do this fairly often with my premium channels like HBO since they show a new cable release every Saturday night.

Get your money’s worth from your Netflix subscription and add a few new movies to your queue.

Check your On Demand channel for a movie. New releases can be pricey, but if you split the cost with the rest of the viewers (i.e. your friends) it will be more affordable. Also, many times there’s a free section on On Demand, which is worth a quick look.

Ask a friend if they have any new DVDs that you can borrow for a screening.

Use an iTunes or Amazon credit that you may have to download a movie.

If you want to host an experience outside, search for a free outdoor movie series in your area. These have become very popular over the past few years. If you live in a decent-size city, you’ll probably find one. Then all you have to do is invite a few friends and pack a picnic.

Rewatch one of your favorites in your collection. What’s the point of having all those movies if all they do is collect dust?

2. Make Great Snacks

I’m totally into Pinterest right now, mainly because I’m on a diet and I like to torture myself by looking at all the delicious junk-food photos that Midwestern women pin all day long. As it turns out, many of those pins are perfect recipes for a frugal movie night because they’re made from food that you probably already have on hand. Here are some of my favorites.

Baked Mozzarella Sticks

All you need for these baked mozzarella sticks is string cheese, egg, flour, breadcrumbs, and Parmesan cheese. You won’t feel as much guilt either since they’re baked, not fried.

Homemade Calzone

For these calzones, fill prepared pizza dough with your favorite pizza ingredients like cheese, pepperoni, and sauce, then “braid” it before popping in the oven.

Parmesan Baked Potato Halves

Potatoes, butter, cheese, and garlic are the main ingredients in this homemade appetizer that will comfort the whole crowd.

Cookies and Cream Popcorn

Instead of drenching it in butter and salt, drizzle the popcorn with melted white chocolate and mix in crushed Oreo cookies. Yeah, I know. I had a foodgasm, too.

Hot Chocolate Krispies

Same as regular Rice Krispies treats — but hot chocolate krispies are made richer with the addition of hot chocolate mix and lots more marshmallows.

Chocolate-Filled Strawberries

Since the fruit is in season, this is the perfect time to try a take on classic chocolate-covered strawberries by filling the strawberries instead of dipping them.

Vootbeer

Make a frosty mug of refreshing root beer decidedly adult with this recipe for a grown-up root beer float.

For even more sinful movie-night recipes from my board, find me on Pinterest.

3. Invite the Ideal Guests

Ideal guests for frugal movie night, in my opinion, are those who are equally excited to see the movie you’ve chosen, arrive with a bottle of something red or white, and hush their mouths while the movie is screening. You know which of your friends that is, so give them a call or text and extend an invitation.

4. Make It Comfy

The final step to hosting an awesome frugal movie night is to make the experience comfortable. Are you gearing up to see The Dark Knight Rises, Brave, and/or Prometheus?

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the cinema alone or with friends (so long as their A/C is working). But "the full movie theater experience" — complete with popcorn, soda, Snow Caps, and the like — can be pricey. Thankfully movie theater deals and discounts abound, and we've got some tips on how to enjoy the big screen films for a little cash. (See also: How to Watch Movies in the Theater for Free)

Firstly, let us state the obvious: see a matinee. According to Real Simple, catching the day's first screening can save you around $3 per ticket. For larger cineplexes, matinees usually start around noon, but most local, independently run theaters only open their doors around 5 p.m. on weekdays — the perfect time for a movie, then dinner.

If you can't make an early screening, or if you prefer to take in the sunshine this summer, and still want to get the most out of your movie experience, consider buying your movie tickets in bulk. With movie ticket admissions starting at just $7.49, BulkTix.com saves you at least $4 per ticket, and you'll receive free shipping on eight or more tickets via Google Checkout and coupon code "TURKEYTX".

But when eight tickets are too many (that's almost 16 hours of video if you view all the movies solo!), keep an eye out for Fandango deals: we've seen tickets valued at $12 for as little as $5 a piece. AMC Theaters is also no stranger to deals; in the last six weeks they've offered 4 AMC Silver Experience Movie Tickets for $24, Disney Pixar movie tickets for $6, and a free small popcorn promotion via Facebook. If you're loyal to a particular theater, consider setting up an email alert for that chain to be notified immediately the next time we inevitably find a deal.

If you don't want to dish out for your movie tickets in advance, Real Simple suggests that you see if your credit card company offers any perks. Right now Visa Signature cardholders can get free Fandango movie ticket when purchasing one at regular price on Fridays. Or join AMC Stubs for one year ($12) and you'll receive: $10 in rewards points for every $100 you spend at AMC Theaters, free upgrades on concession snacks, waived online ticket purchase fees, and more.

Speaking of discounted concession stand goodies, we often see both AMC Theaters and Regal Cinemas coupons for free or discounted small drinks, popcorn, available by just liking the CineMark Facebook page.

If you've got your own A/C and are without incentive to venture out into the summer air, keep your eyes out for deals like a $20 Starbucks card bundled with two complimentary movie tickets. This particular offer has sadly expired now, but movie tickets are a popular item to be bundled with gift cards, as well as DVDs and Blu-ray movies. In fact, right now, pre-order the new Men in Black III on Blu-ray and receive a free movie ticket to see Men in Black III in theaters. If you're hesitant to pre-order the 2-disc combo and 3-disc 3D combo of MIB3, the first two films are also bundled with the $10 movie ticket credit.

As a budget-conscious cinephile, you should keep all these tips in mind when planning future trips to the movies. But you should also be signed up for an email alert so you know immediately when we list such deals, which not only include the above promotions, but also free tickets to movie screenings.

This is a guest post by Dealnews.

Seeing summer movies is a great way to be entertained and beat the heat. Briefly I pondered whether I should discontinue one or the other; I decided to stick with the combination service. But when the company upped its prices for the same services to $16 (okay, $15.98) just months later, I was upset. The change represents an overall +70% increase in less than a year, making me wonder about the stability of future pricing and rethinking the value of the service altogether. (See also: The Psychology of Pricing)

Decision: DVD or Streaming?

When I told my family that Netflix prices were increasing, I gave them the option of choosing DVD or Streaming (rather than both). The fast, unanimous decision was "streaming."

The truth is that we use the streaming option more often because of its convenience, despite the deeper selection available on DVD.

Still, I am torn. Having never been a big movie-goer, I saw Netflix as my ticket to seeing the movies that I had missed in the past couple of decades, partly because of other priorities and partly because of the expense of viewing first-run movies in the theater. And, after having children, I rarely visited the movie-and-game-rental stores, opting to purchase children’s titles like the Veggie Tales series and watching these over and over.

As my children turned into teenagers, they became more interested in current movies, and I decided I finally had time for them myself. But my first visit to the nearest Blockbuster location became my last, as the store closed soon after my initial rental.

Soon, with the help of my youngest son (who has the family’s biggest appetite for culture and entertainment), I discovered streaming video. I decided to try Netflix, as its monthly price was below the typical expense of a movie ticket. Since then, we have viewed some movies on DVD, but mostly watched television series and full-length movies through the streaming option. So, when the email about the price increase came, the decision to drop the DVDs was straightforward, based on actual usage rather than predictions of future habits.

Possible Glitch: Cost of Bandwidth

The cost of a subscription to Netflix or a similar service is just one component of a total entertainment package. Expenses for over-the-cap usage of bandwidth can also increase, as Internet service providers move to change how they bill Internet usage (even as they insist that few customers will be affected). Likewise, those who stream movies to mobile devices may see higher costs associated with limited data plans.

For now, bandwidth issues may not be a factor affecting expenses. But as consumption-based billing or usage-based billing becomes more prevalent, overall expenses will rise and decisions will become more complicated.

More Entertainment Options

Having been new to streaming content specifically and entertainment options in general, I didn’t realize that there were so many choices. According to a Wise Bread post on ways to watch TV and movies without cable and a recent article by Consumer Reports on Netflix alternatives, consumers have plenty of choices. Both sources mention Amazon Prime, which offers free access to thousands of titles as a benefit to its flat-rate membership program for free-and-fast shipping of Amazon.com orders.

Even more options for entertainment via DVD and/or streaming:

Watch streaming movies on a pay-per-view plan, rather than unlimited option (great if you watch occasionally)

Switch back and forth from streaming-only to DVD-only plans in order to view movies from both categories

Rent DVDs at the library (DVDs are free at my library, but the selection is limited)

Buy and swap DVDs using PaperbackSwap's sister company Swap-A-DVD (I have used Paperback Swap, but not the DVD service)

Did the recent Netflix price increase affect you?
