Fortunately, with a garment steamer, you can achieve professional-quality steaming at home, so your clothing always looks smooth and freshly pressed. It can even freshen up clothes between washings or trips to the dry cleaner.

If you’re tired of dragging the ironing board out every morning, then steaming offers a faster, more effective, and gentler alternative for all your fabrics. Best of all, your garments can be steamed right on the hanger. Garment steamers use only water, so you won’t have to worry about chemicals on your fabric, which makes it safe for use around your family and pets.

What Is a Clothing Steamer?

A clothing steamer uses high-temperature steam to quickly remove wrinkles from clothing, bedding, drapes, mattresses, and upholstery. Most home steamers can handle everything from cotton and wool to satin and silk. You can choose from floor models and compact handheld models, depending on your needs.

In less than a minute, your clothing will look pressed, professional, and like-new. A good steamer can replace your iron altogether. It can also save you time and the money that you would have normally spent at the dry cleaners.

Top 5 Clothing Steamers

Conair ExtremeSteam C Hand Held Fabric Steamer

The Conair ExtremeSteam C Hand Held Fabric Steamer can steam all types of fabrics and items, including clothing, linen, drapes, bedding, and delicates. It can even kill dust mites and bedbugs. It uses a concentrated stream of micro-particles of water, which is better for delicate items. It has a 75-second heat up feature and provides about 15 minutes of steam time on one fill. The steam gets up to 30% hotter than other steamers and covers five times as much surface area, so it can release deep wrinkles up to five times faster than other steamers. The dual heat technology features low and high settings and an option for constant steam or energy-saving steam pause. It also features a yellow power light indicator and a green ready light indicator. The high-quality handheld 1200-watt steamer is quick and easy to use, fill, and store. It’s portable, lightweight, and ergonomically designed for more comfortable usage. It also comes with creaser, fabric brush, and soft cushion brush attachments.

This comes in white and purple options. After all, doing the job well will always be the most important factor in anyone's career. But there are good reasons why dressing the part can help your career efforts. Here are some ways a poor wardrobe can hold you back at work.

1. Lost Trust

When what you wear mirrors the message you want to get across — whatever that is — you will come across as authentic, and authentic people are seen as trustworthy. If you want to seem responsible and organized, but you wear wild colors or clashing prints, it might be hard for people to believe that you have the characteristics you're trying to embody.

Figuring out what your message needs to be can be complex. Think of words that describe a person who does the job you want well. Then evaluate your wardrobe based on those descriptors. If, for instance, your company tends to hire people who are intense to be salespeople, see if your clothes match that adjective. If they don't, make some changes so that they do.

2. Lost Power

Wearing a great suit not only changes how you are perceived, but also how you feel about yourself. When you dress formally, people perceive you as powerful. You begin to pick up on these feelings and so begin to perceive yourself as more powerful, as well. This is a feedback loop that can help you move up at work, since powerful people tend to get what they want.

If a suit isn't appropriate in your workplace, figure out what the equivalent might be. What would it mean to dress even slightly more formally? Try that out and see if it helps you. The only places where this doesn't always apply are jobs where everyone wears uniforms. Even there, though, changing something like your footwear or your accessories can often make you look more formal.

3. Lost Professionalism

There are many ways clothing can cause people to see you as less professional than you might actually be. If your clothes don't fit right, are too casual, or show inappropriate amounts of skin, you won't have as professional of an air as you would have if your clothes were up to snuff. This can cause you to lose out on promotions, especially those that might make you more visible.

If you aren't sure whether your clothing is appropriately professional, ask someone. Find someone whose clothing you admire and see if they would mind giving you some feedback. Ask them how your own wardrobe comes across at work and what they would do to improve it. Yes, this requires you to be vulnerable, but it can also help you make huge strides ahead in the workplace.

4. Lost Sense of Belonging

When you're part of a department or a team, it's important that you dress on par with those around you. Look at the people you work with and evaluate their wardrobes. Are they stylish? Do they wear brightly colored accents, or do they stick to neutral tones? Do they stand out in a crowd or try to blend in? If you dress like the people around you, you will look more like you belong in that particular workplace. Whether that's good or bad depends on your particular personality and workplace goals.

Make sure that you don't become part of the background, though. Your clothes roughly match those of your team of coworkers, but they still need to fit well and be appropriate to your personality. And, if there's any doubt, dress a bit more formally than the people around you. It makes you look like you are competent and in charge.

5. Lost Respect

There are so many ways your clothing can cost you respect at work — from unprofessional or inappropriate attire to clothes that make you look too junior for your role. Most employers want to bring on and promote people who respect themselves and respect the workplace, because these are people that they, in turn, can respect.

Many of the issues that cause you to lose respect can be easily remedied. Buy a new suit for your interview and have it tailored to fit. Err on the side of formal dress, rather than informal. Make sure your clothes are clean and pressed and that nothing is hanging out where it shouldn't. These basic steps can mean the difference between having the job you want and having none at all.

If wardrobe is a struggle for you and you feel like it is holding you back at work, consider working with a wardrobe consultant. You can find these people online, though different wardrobe professionals may focus on different industries or different levels of dress (business casual vs. business formal, for example). While this can involve a significant financial investment, that will pay off over the years if you can get a job that makes you happy and pays more.

Do you think your wardrobe is holding you back at work? How can you change that?

This article is from Sarah Winfrey of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Store-bought cleaners can also be pretty expensive, and you'll need a different one for upholstery, clothing, pets, and other stuff.

If you're fed up with stains and fed up with paying too much for lackluster results, then make your own stain remover! We've got five DIY recipes, all of which have ingredients that you probably have around the house. They're easy to make, and nice and cheap, too.

1. Miracle Cleaner

You may have seen this one passed around Pinterest, and if you haven't given it a try, then now is the time. The "miracle cleaner" is a simple concoction of one part dishwashing liquid (preferably Dawn) and two parts hydrogen peroxide, which is commonly used as an antiseptic. The resulting mixture is amazingly tough on clothing stains, successfully removing everything from wine to blood to chocolate. It even takes out pit stains! As with all stain removers, test it in an inconspicuous spot before using. If the stain is extra tough, after applying remover, scrub with a brush and let sit for an hour before laundering. This cleaner also works well on carpets.

2. Homemade Carpet Cleaner

You can't just throw carpet in the wash and hope for the best, and that makes it extra tough to clean. If you don't own a clunky carpet cleaner and don't want to rent one every time you spill something, then try this homemade carpet stain remover. To make your own, add vinegar, dishwashing liquid, and warm water to a spray bottle. Working over a sink, add baking soda, and quickly screw on the lid. The combination of vinegar and baking soda will produce lots of fizzy bubbles, which are great for cleaning. Be sure to vacuum the area of carpet before and after using the cleaner to remove any residue.

3. Homemade Pet Stain Remover

A common cause of everyday stains are cats, dogs, and other animals. No matter how well-trained your pet may be, an accident is bound to happen from time to time. The next time you take a step into something wet that really shouldn't be, mix up some of this pet stain remover. The multi-step process is a great way to remove pesky stains, as well as the odor that goes along with them. Start by making a simple mixture of vinegar and water and applying that to the stained area. Dry well, and apply baking soda to neutralize odor. A final dose of hydrogen peroxide will help work out any remaining stain.

4. DIY Laundry Spot Remover

For a non-toxic and hypoallergenic alternative, this all-natural stain remover is a combination of castile soap, vegetable glycerine, baking soda, lemon essential oil, and water. It has a fresh smell, and won't irritate skin. Simply spray it on stained clothing, rub it into the affected area, and let sit for up to an hour before washing like normal. For extra stubborn stains, rinse and repeat.

5. Hard Water Stain Cleaner

Water stains can be especially irritating, and simple window cleaning just isn't enough — all of the scrubbing in the world doesn't seem to do any good. For a unique and effective way to clean the grime away, combine vodka and Coke. It might be tempting to pour it into a glass of ice instead of a spray bottle, but just go with it. Spray the cocktail on the water-stained surface and simply let sit. You may need to repeat two or three times, but eventually the dull stains will wear away to reveal shiny, clean glass, even without scrubbing. Be sure to fix yourself that cocktail once you're done.

What's your favorite DIY stain remover?

This article is from Laurel Randolph of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. If it's time to call in a backup team equipped with shovels and Hefty bags, maybe you just need a little help separating wearable clothes from the unbearable clutter. (See also: 15 Things in Your Kitchen You Should Throw Out Today)

Here's a list of 15 things in your closet that you can throw out today.

1. Clothes With the Tags Still Attached

Let's face it, if you've purchased a piece of clothing but never removed the tags and worn it, there's probably a reason. Cut your losses. Return the item if you can or donate it to your favorite charity.

2. Old Bridesmaid Dresses

Sure, the bride may have promised you'd get years of versatile wear out of that fuschia and black dress, but it's just hasn't worked out that way. Donate it so that some young woman can pull a Pretty in Pink and harvest it to create an original prom dress.

3. Mismatched Socks

We may never fully understand how pairs of perfectly good socks lose their mates. Stop wondering and don't try to force a mismatched marriage. Move the loners to your rag drawer; they make great dust rags. Or, explore other creative uses for old socks.

4. Free Promotional Clothing

Do you have an upcoming event where a t-shirt advertising a low rate at Bill's Discount Autos is de rigueur? I didn't think so. Consider donating most of your promotional clothing.

5. Sentimental Clothes

It's a natural impulse to keep clothing that means something to us. Your first college sweatshirt, a t-shirt from a marathon you spent months training for, a scarf from your favorite aunt. But if you're not still using any of these items, maybe it's time to store the memories and let the items go.

6. College Tees

It's perfectly acceptable to wear a college t-shirt — if you actually attended college there, if you're forking over crazy tuition for a kid who attends, or if you're employed there. Otherwise, toss those tees or explore ways to creatively recycle them. Wearing random college swag might have been hip for about five minutes in the late 80s, but the moment has passed.

7. Anything With Blown Elastic

Socks, bras, and underwear all require elastic to be comfortable and fulfill their important wardrobe functions. Remember that and live by this this mantra: When the elastic blows, the item goes.

8. Clothes Saved From Old Relationships

We've all collected a few clothing pieces from previous relationships. But wearing them regularly is the wardrobe equivalent walking around in a scrapbook. Whether we consciously realize it or not, these items can make us melancholy and keep us literally wrapped up the past.

9. Damaged or Stained Clothes

Damaged clothes present a special challenge for many people. If we love the item, we tell ourselves we'll repair that rip, replace that zipper, or research how to remove a stubborn stain. But we seldom find the time. That's why damaged and stained clothing can languish in the back of our closets for years. Be honest and realistic with yourself. If you can't — or won't — repair it, toss it.

10. Clothes That Don't Fit

If it's too tight, too short, too long, or too big, why keep it around? If a piece of clothing can't be tailored, clear it out and make room for something that fits just right.

11. Clothes That Aren't Comfortable

That wool sweater that makes you itch just looking at it, those pointy shoes that turn every step into exquisite torture, those jeans that hug all the wrong places — scrap 'em all. Life is too short (and our closets are too small) for clothes that aren't comfortable.

12. Clothes With Pilling

It's not always easy to keep clothes looking new. Depending on the fabric and the weave, pilling is just a fact of life. Though there are pill-removing devices, relying on them is often an exercise in futility — you really shouldn't have to shave you sweater before you wear it. Toss what's pill-prone and shelve your shaver.

13. Unflattering Clothes

I can't wear low-rise jeans; I know it and I accept it. But every time I shop for jeans I'm tempted to buy a pair because finding an alternative is nearly impossible. Facing a high tide of low-rise jeans, I completely understand how folks end up buying a piece of clothing that's just not right for their body type. If something unflattering has wound up in your closet, embrace the fact that you wouldn't — and shouldn't — wear it. Pass the item on to someone who can really pull it off.

14. Clothing That's Out of Style

1982 called, and it wants those parachute pants back. Holding out until items come back in style is a misguided strategy; either the cuts have slightly changed or our waistlines have "evolved." Delight a hipster and sell these retro fashions for a premium on eBay.

15. Faded Black Clothing

Black can't handle even the slightest fading. If that little black dress, black shirt, or black cotton sweater is obviously going gray, give up the ghost. Chuck it and look for a replacement.

Just imagine it: a closet purged of every single thing that isn't flattering and wearable. It's not an urban myth and it's entirely doable with a bit of discipline and diligence. Oh, and once you declutter your messy closet, explore new ways to organize it. You just may love the results so much that you finally tackle what's under the bed.

What's in your closet that you can toss, recycle, or donate today? I've got an important meeting and suddenly my hem falls out or a button falls off in the worst possible place. It's no Super Bowl 2004, but it's still embarrassing and frustrating. (See also: Make Your Clothing Fit Perfectly With These 10 No-Sew Fixes)

But fear not, because we've got some life-saving (or at least, blouse-saving) tips and tricks when you're in a last minute bind before an important meeting or a potential date.

Zippers

Few things are worse than having a zipper go wrong miles from home.

1. Paper Clip It

If you've pulled off a zipper pulling on your jacket, use a paper clip or key ring as a temporary fix. It might not look amazing, but it'll get the job done until you can get a more permanent solution.

2. Glue It

According to Shannon Makes Stuff, you can fix broken zipper teeth with hot glue and a little patience. These are untested waters for me, but if you have this problem, it's worth a shot!

3. Unstick It With Graphite

If you've ever gotten stuck in a jacket, you know how frustrating it can be. Find a graphite pencil and rub it on the teeth of the zipper. If this doesn't work, grab some lubricant — windex, bar soap, or lip balm. And most importantly: be patient and slow. The more frustrated you get, the more the zipper becomes a Chinese finger trap and you're stuck in there forever.

Stains

You need to act fast to keep a stain from holding fast if you want to save a favorite piece from losing its place in your wardrobe.

4. Carry a Stain Remover

Yes, it's obvious, but purchase Tide To Go or Shout Wipe & Go and keep them in your bag, desk drawer, or car. You never know when you might need them, and they're worth having just in case.

5. Sprinkle Baby Powder to Remove Oil

If you've ever had oily spots, baby powder is great for removal of oil, wine, or makeup stains. Sprinkle some on and take a white cloth to remove.

6. Use Baby Wipes on Deodorant Stains

If you have deodorant stains at random times and ALWAYS when you're running late, grab some baby wipes. They'll get the stains off and they won't come back after the spot dries.

Hems

Hems come undone from time to time, but you can fix them on the go quickly and easily.

7. Fix It With Double-Sided Tape

If you're in the office, ask around for some double-sided tape to quickly fix your pants. I've also used packing tape when I was out of options.

8. Try Stitch Witchery

Stitch Witchery has saved my day more than once. Once you put the tape around and fold up, grab an iron (or flat iron if you don't have an iron around), press the hem and you're good to go! Stitch Witchery is washable and dry cleanable.

9. Safety Pin It

You can also use a few safety pins to put your hem back together. These also work for pretty much every other problem.

10. Sew It Yourself — It's Easy!

Last option, sew it yourself.

Buttons

Maybe the best way to replace a button is to keep it from falling off in the first place.

11. Secure With Clear Nail Polish

To prevent buttons from falling off, use clear nail polish to help secure them. This will keep the thread from unraveling.

12. Sew It Back On

If you have a sewing kit handy (or someone in your office does), follow this guide to sew on a button.

13. Twist Tie It Back On

You can also use a twist tie to temporarily attach a button back on. Men's Health has a step-by-step guide that shows you how to quickly and effectively put the button back on.

Shoes

Don't let scuff marks on your shoes spoil a great outfit.

14. Polish With Improvisation

If your shoes are scuffed up, but you don't have any polish handy, you can always use bananas or vaseline to remove the scuffs. Use the inside of the banana peel, and then wipe with a paper towel.

15. Remove Odor With Rubbing Alcohol

If your shoes are stinking up the office, grab some rubbing alcohol wipes from the first aid kit and wipe down your feet and in the inside of your shoes. For a more permanent fix, use your washer and dryer, a machine deodorizer, and new insoles.

Static Cling

When the weather gets dry and windy, our clothes get close and clingy!

16. De-Ionize With a Wire Hanger

Static cling can be a nightmare, but luckily someone still makes wire hangers out there somewhere. Just use the wire hanger and rub it on the material causing the cling. If you've thrown away all your wire hangers like your mother always taught you, use hairspray or another metal object, such as a thimble.

17. Deploy Static Prevention Devices During the Wash

To prevent the cling from happening, ball up tinfoil in the washer (but not the dryer!), use fabric softener, or a dryer sheet. They can all reduce static cling.

18. Stick Your Skirt Down With Moisturizer

If static cling is causing your skirt to ride up, dab some moisturizer on your legs and it'll solve it right away.

What are your solutions to these — or other — common clothing problems?

This article is from Jennifer Holder of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Sometimes it has nothing to do with the numbers on the scale. On other occasions it's the direct result of a recent holiday cookie binge. (See also: 7 Style Secrets for Women That Flatter every Shape)

Fortunately, there quite a number of tricks discovered and perfected by the fashion industry to give your body an instant slim-down without all the dieting, sweating, and weigh-ins. Read on for our round-up of the easiest ways to look trim — even when you're feeling anything but.

1. Wear Horizontal Stripes

Contrary to popular belief, it's horizontal stripes — not vertical ones — that make a person appear thinner than they are, according to new research by a British psychologist. For the most slimming look, go for white garments with narrow, black horizontal stripes. As for those vertical stripes you thought had a slimming effect, this piece of research found that verticals actually make you look more bloated.

2. Grow Your Hair Out

Long hair elongates the face and neck, creating the illusion of a longer, leaner body.

3. Get Some Sun

There's nothing like a sunkissed glow to make the body appear more slender. For a safer alternative, opt for a spray tan or a contour tan, which uses shadows and coloring to create faux features like ab muscles and high cheekbones.

4. Wear Body-Hugging Clothing

A major misconception about dressing for a fuller figure is that baggy clothing hides a person's extra weight. On the contrary, loose clothing makes a person look larger, fashion experts say. Rather, it's form-fitting clothing paired with flowy layers like a sweater or scarf that creates a more slimming silhouette.

5. Tease Your Hair

Don't be afraid to channel your inner Diana Ross. Big hair creates the illusion of a narrower (read: more slender) face.

6. Accentuate Your Waist

Use a belt, shirt tuck, or ruching to draw all eyes and attention to the narrowest part of your torso. This timeless trick will keep focus away from any sags or bulges.

7. Wear Heels

The taller you are, the skinnier you appear. So don't be afraid to add a little extra height. If you're clumsy on your feet, opt for a platform or wedge heel rather than the more precarious stiletto. Men, too, can get an extra boost from a pair of boots with a large sole or dress shoes with a small heel.

8. Wear Dark Bootcut Pants

Bootcut pants that are black, navy, or a deep shade of indigo have a slimming effect on the abdomen, pelvis, and rear end. The bootcut style in particular makes the legs look longer and therefore more trim.

9. Embrace Shapewear

Undergarments that smooth, shape, and tuck away folds, rolls, and bloat can be the confidence boost you need to really strut your stuff. Women can achieve a trimmer waistline using products like the mid-thigh shaper or the open-bust camisole by SPANX. For the boys, try the crew neck body shaper by 2(x)ist or the long leg brief girdle by Underworks.

10. Accessorize With a Super-Long Necklace

A long necklace directs the eye away from the often problematic hips and mid-section. It also lengthens the entire frame, giving the illusion of a trimmer body.

11. Choose Your Fabrics Wisely

For a svelte look, spandex, jersey, cashmere, and fine cotton are your go-to fabrics because they help shape the contours of the body. But steer clear from corduroy, crushed velvet, metallic, leather, sequin-adorned materials, and suede. These heavily textured fabrics will add pounds as well as pizzazz to your look.

12. Opt For a V-Neck

All hail the V-neck — a simple neckline that works effortlessly to slim down the frame by creating the illusion of height. It's the most flattering neckline out there and it does the trick every time.

What are your favorite shape-shifting and slimming tricks? Though men's clothing projects are much harder to find online, they're well worth seeking out. Any time you can bring new life to the duds you already own, you're saving money.

So check out these 13 cool projects for DIY men's clothing and accessories and feel free to add your own in the comments!

1. (Re)Dyed Jeans

Have a pair of faded denim jeans? This smart tutorial will show you how to refresh them for just $3. Grab a box of RIT dye at your local grocery or drugstore. You can go with traditional navy or blue, but there are a wide variety of colors from which to choose.

2. Cutoffs

If you have a comfy old pair of jeans, turn them into cool cutoffs with this simple tutorial. It's really as easy as cutting the jeans and cuffing them. The author also uses a standard razor to create a naturally distressed look.

3. Pocket T-Shirt

A printout pattern and piece of your favorite fabric jazzes up a plain t-shirt with a new, useful pocket. There's a bit of basic sewing involved, but it's nothing a novice can't handle.

4. Skinny Tie

Need a unique tie for a special occasion? Skip the store and try making your own. You'll need a vintage tie to act as your pattern, but once you get going — you'll want one in every color.

5. Bow Tie

That's right, you can also create your own stylish bow tie for special events or, well, just because. This tutorial requires some basic sewing, but you can use whatever fabric matches your theme. And making the bow tie might be easier than tying one!

6. Leather Belt

Create a custom DIY Leather Belt that will last you years and years. Find an old belt to serve as your pattern, as well as a long strip of leather, some hardware, and a few leather-working tools. You can dye it whatever color you like and then condition using olive oil.

7. Tank

All you need is an old t-shirt, a sharp pair of scissors, and a marker to make this casual Tank Top. This piece would be great to wear to the beach or at the gym for lifting weights. Plus, it's a good way to reuse an old shirt that might have pit stains!

8. Screen Print

This specific tutorial features a women's shirt, but the same basic screen printing process applies for men's (and kid's) shirts as well. Choose a design you wish to print and draw it onto freezer paper. Iron it onto your shirt on a flat surface. Then paint over the design using fabric paint and remove the freezer paper to let set.

9. Elbow Patches

Again, this DIY Elbow Patch Sweater tutorial features a women's shirt, but it's just as stylish for men. Plus, you can buy leather or fabric elbow patches if you want to skip the stitching for less than $10. Otherwise, you need an old sweater, iron-on adhesive fabric, and an iron.

10. Button Up Shirt

This manly sewing project creates a button-up shirt for a fraction of what it would cost at the store. You can use whatever fabric you might have on hand or choose something specific, but you'll need two yards in all. The pattern is free after you sign up for the blog's email list.

11. Card Holder

These awesome leather card holders come together quickly and require minimal stitching. You can also play with the pattern a bit to get the look you want. A great place to find leather in all textures and colors is on Etsy.

12. Paracord Bracelet

I see these Paracord Bracelets everywhere, and I never thought to make my own. Though the images might look tricky, you can click them for a closer view. It's a lot of figure eight weaving, but after a while, you should get the hang.

13. Hoodie

This DIY Hoodie Project surely requires some sewing skills. However, it doesn't look out of the realm of possibility. And the pattern is loose. You can use an old t-shirt — just make sure to leave a seam allowance.

Alright you manly DIYers: what projects are you getting into?

Like this article? It's already mid-August, and many of us are diving deep into back-to-school mode. One of the most important parts of getting ready? Dressing the part. But refreshing your fall wardrobe — whether you're heading into the classroom or not — doesn't need to cost a fortune. In fact, it doesn't need to cost anything at all! (Related: 50 Ways to Update Your Wardrobe On the Cheap)

Here are some tips that will get you looking smart without spending foolishly.

1. Take Stock

Before trekking to the store, it's important you gain a solid understanding of the clothes that already live in your dresser drawers. Take a couple hours to dump all your clothing items onto your bed and to go through them. Try each piece on to see what fits both your body and lifestyle. Divide into three piles: keep, toss/donate, and on-the-fence. Place the keep and on-the-fence clothes back into your closet and proceed with the next tips. (You can always repeat again with those clothes you're not sure about.)

2. Sell the Old

And before throwing away or donating discarded clothing, try hitting up your local consignment shops. You can even sell your stuff (for free!) online with sites like thredUP. Keep in mind that most stores prefer name brand clothes in good condition (no stains, rips, pilling, etc.) that are within a few fashion seasons of the current date. Then pocket the money you earn to put toward new duds. Many stores will give you more credit versus cash if you choose to shop with your earnings there.

3. Think Thrifty

That's right! While you're at the consignment store, take a look around. Chances are you might discover a few pieces you love that are like-new and won't end up costing you a dime. Thrift stores like GoodWill and Salvation Army are other good places to browse, you'll just want to inspect these pieces more carefully for signs of wear. Historically, I've found great deals in these types of places, especially on children's clothing, since kids outgrow shirts and pants so quickly, they hardly get a chance to lose that gently worn look. (Related: 6 Back-to-School Items You Should Always Buy at the Thrift Store)

4. Add Accessories

Before racing to the retail stores, consider if more clothes are really what you need. Sometimes having fewer options means that dressing takes less time and energy in the mornings, meaning you go about your day with less hassle. You may also get better overall use out of a smaller wardrobe because you won't forget about anything in the depths of your closet. If you think this idea applies to you, shop around for a few key accessories — belts, scarves, hats, jewelry — that can transform otherwise plain outfits into sheer style. (Related: Affordable Accessories to Kickstart Your Style)

5. Shop Sales

Don't pile into the car without a plan if you want good deals on a new wardrobe. Take some time to check your local paper, TV advertisements, and store websites for any promotions or coupons. And don't forget to check those social media accounts, as some major shops post coupon codes only for their loyal fans to enjoy. Chances are, there's a sale upcoming, and you'll be kicking yourself if you pay full price only to find whatever you bought is 40% off days later. The hard lesson I learned from the bugs that destroyed my favorite coat was this: There's no point in having a surplus of anything if I can't protect it. The moths that chewed quarter-sized holes in my cashmere sweaters had probably been munching away for weeks before I noticed their work.

The moth infestation required a total closet reboot. To find and annihilate the Moths' Secret Headquarters (a wool coin purse I'd had since childhood), I had to pull every single item of clothing out of my closet and inspect it for damage. Then I washed everything, including the closet itself. It was a loathsome chore that I never want to repeat. (See also: 5 Wardrobe Basics for Women That Are Worth Investing In)

With that in mind, I set some parameters about what items of clothing would be a part of my newly downsized wardrobe. My closet would contain only clothes that:

I love; and

I actually wear on a regular basis.

Now, the only clothes in my closet are clothes that I love wearing so much that I can't wait for them to be laundered so I can wear them again. The speedy rotation of clothes through the laundry now allows me to catch problems early. Getting dressed in the morning gives me a little bump of happiness.

To achieve this aspirational wardrobe, I made the following key decisions.

I Gave Up Dressing My Fantasy Self

While cleaning out my closet I realized that I had been buying clothes without considering my typical, daily schedule, or the climate. This was an enormous waste of money and storage space.

In my fantasy life, I dress like I'm Robin Wright on House of Cards. And, although I do need corporate attire for an occasional business meeting, in my actual life I don't need 13 of the 15 little black dresses in my closet, especially since I work most days from the comfort of my cat hair covered sofa.

In my fantasy life, I also live someplace cold. I had tons of wool clothes. Because I live in sunny Los Angeles, I decided not to replenish my sweater and coat collection. Although I pine for autumn in New York, in Los Angeles it's basically summer from Valentine's Day to Thanksgiving. More than half my closet space was devoted to clothes I could only wear 60 days out of the year. That was dumb.

In my fantasy life, I'm also the same size as I was in college. Contrary to popular belief, I was not inspired to get thin by the too-small clothes in my closet. Instead I was reminded daily that I spent money poorly on clothes that would have been out of date by the time I lost weight, and then not even be flattering on my skinnier body.

My actual wardrobe for my actual life now consists mainly of jeans and blouses that are super comfortable, but still appropriate to wear to casual business meetings and dinners.

I Got Rid of Clothes That Didn't Make Me Feel Great

I put off selling an expensive handbag that had been given to me by a previous (bad) boyfriend, because I knew I would never be able to afford to replace it with something comparable. But, every time I used the bag, it triggered bad memories. Was owning a Status Purse worth the bad feelings attached to it? (No). I ended up selling it, and don't miss it now that it's gone. (See also: Successful Women Have These 7 Things in Their Bag)

Life is too short to wear uncomfortable clothes. I sold off beautiful shoes that made walking hard, and ditched anything that felt too tight or itchy. I realized that the clothes I wear the most are also the most comfortable.

I Learned Fit Is as Important as Price and Quality

Although the standard advice for buying anything is quality over quantity, buying $200 designer jeans is a huge waste of money if the $40 pair from Target fits perfectly. In addition to saving money on the price, well-fitted clothes give the illusion of quality and luxury. People who project wealth and success wear clothes that fit.

I have to have the vast majority of my clothes tailored to fit my body, as I am very hard to fit off the rack. Through mortifying trial and error during my youth, I discovered that buying trendy clothes is my road to fashion and financial ruin. It doesn't matter how cool it looks on the hanger or on the model. If it looks terrible on me, it's not a good deal.

Only fashionistas notice or care if I am on-trend, but everyone can see that my clothes aren't flattering.

Since 95% of my wardrobe is made up of used clothing, I am now extra cautious about shopping at thrift stores. I used to use thrift stores and department store clearance racks as a way to experiment on clothes with a lower financial risk. At least this is what I told myself. A truly good deal is based on price-per-wearing. A $10 dress that I wear once is ultimately more expensive than the $50 dress I wear weekly.

I Got Realistic About Wardrobe Projects

I am lucky to be surrounded by women who shop retail as a hobby. As a result, I get a lot of my clothes for free at Girlie Swap Parties. However, just because something is free, doesn't mean I should take it home with me. If something needs to be hemmed, professionally cleaned, or repaired to make it wearable, I really think long and hard before I bring it home. Do I really love something so much that it's worth the time and money it will take to make it perfect?

What are your best tips for building a great, minimalist wardrobe?
