We never had much money, so my folks bought food in cans because it lasted forever, it was cheap and, if dented or without a label, really really cheap. Most times we'd open up a can like it was a present..."I wonder what's for dinner tonight?" I always ate it. Probably because most of the time, it was spaghetti hoops or green beans or something else just as inocuous. But what if the following items has been inside?

This article is not meant to poke fun at the foods of other cultures. I have long been a proponent of "I'll try anything once" and watch the show Bizzare Foods just to see what is out there. What's more, the good people of places like Japan, China, the Phillipines and Thailand understand frugality completely, using every part of the animal or plant to make a meal.

But as liberal as I am when it comes to cheap, canned food, I'm not sure how many of these I could stomach When I told my dad "I just couldn't eat that" he came back with "that's because you're not hungry enough" and he was right. When it comes to survival, we'd be surprised at what we could do.

So, imagine your pantry is filled with the following delicacies, and you couldn't get out of the house for weeks. Could you eat them? First up, something easy to understand. It was a big hit on Digg.com yesterday.

The Cheeseburger in a can! Personally, if I had been on the town and had a few beers, I would probably eat it. To my shame. I suspect most of you could, too. A nice way to transition into some of the more bizarre creations.

Next up, the Whole Chicken in a can. Now I don't know about you, but this one looks about as enticing as an ice cold jacuzzi on a cold winter's day. Once again though, I doubt I'd have much trouble.

Tongues aren't just for wagging, they're also for eating. And I should know - I've had a tongue sandwich before. Somehow though, it looked an awful lot better sliced than in this picture for a Can of tongues.

One for the vegetarians out there, although I doubt anyone would really want to tuck into canned processed cheddar cheese. But it only gets worse from here.

Just like momma used to make, a nice freshly baked loaf of canned bread. Mmmmm.

For those of you who don't know this Scottish delicacy, it's a sheep's stomach stuffed with meat and barley. That's the simplified version. I've had it, it's not too bad. But imagine a haggis in a can, complete with the pale stomach lining and gray meat. I've suddenly lost my appetite.

No joke. In some parts of the world it's quite normal to pick up a can or two of delicious whale meat, complete with blubber. Not knocking it, certainly not in any hurry to try it though.

Look again. This is not one of those 'snake in a can' practical jokes. In some parts of good ol' 'Merica, you can buy cans of genuine Rattlesnake meat. I've heard it's an interesting taste, a bit like tough chicken/pork. I'll give it a try...one day.

This is a dish with real bite. Sorry, couldn't resist. I'm not entirely sure what kind of Fish Mouths are in this can of strangeness, but I'm not in a huge rush to find out either. Catfish maybe? I have heard fish cheeks are devine though.

I'd eat the next one. Not because I was forced but because I'd eat my shoe if it's covered in curry sauce. That's just the Brit in me. Anyway, Thai Green Curry with Crocodile sounds really good to me.

I have to admit, we're getting into territory that even I can't face now. I'll give it a try if I have to, if I was hungry enough, but canned scorpions don't have that nice ring to it.

Sorry, no thanks. Pork Brains in Milk Gravy? Did they think that the milk gravy would make them a little more appealing? If it said Pork Brains in tangy chipotle BBQ sauce, you may have a winner. (By the way, check out the Cholesterol level on this baby...ouch!)

Canned Roasted Crickets with Eggs. As Forrest Gump would say, "That's all I have to say about that."

Forget those BBQ chips. Don't tuck into dry-roasted peanuts. Instead, grab a big old handful of BBQ flavor Silk Worm Pupae. It's the crunchy snack that never fails to satisfy. In a can.

AND FINALLY, to set the record straight...this is something I would eat any day of the week with vigour. SPAM!

I'm not joking, no sarcasm here, I was raised on it and so was my wife. If you want my recipes for Spam Fried Rice or Spam Musubi (a Hawaiian version of sushi) you are more then welcome to them. Great stuff.

This article is from Paul Michael of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. I mean, really bad. So it will come as no surprise to learn that I just scratched my bald head in wonder when I was told the following story. It may be one you've heard before, or a variation of something that's really old, but I'll tell it anyway. And then maybe one smart WB reader can show me how this puzzle actually is solved, because I'm clueless.

The story starts with three guys (although it could have been three girls, hey, I'm not being sexist here). They're all out on the town and get quite merry in a local bar. Instead of attempting to drive (bad idea guys) or paying for a pricey cab, they decide to share a cheap hotel room and split the bill.

The price for the room, they are told by the receptionist, is $30 for one night. No problem for our guys, they each cough up $10 and go sleep off the booze. In the morning, the receptionist gets the bill and realizes the price for the room is actually only $25. As this guy is as bad at math as I am, he decided to give each guy $1 back and pocket the remaining $2 cash.

Here's where my head hurts.

The guys originally paid $10 each for the room.

They get $1 back each, meaning they paid $9 each for the room.

And the receptionist has $2.

$9 x 3 = $27

Add the $2 from the receptionist.

$27 + $2 = $29

But they originally paid $30. So, where on Earth did the $1 bill go? Help!

This article is from Paul Michael of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Aside from their horrific treatment of workers and the impact they have on the economy, their stores just suck all the energy out of me. Which is why I don't go there. But a friend told me today of a WalMart Exclusive DVD that made me laugh out loud. Seriously, this one is a killer. It's the Clueless Whatever! Widescreen Edition DVD with, wait for it, FREE TRANSFORMERS BEACH BALL!

I had to stop and think about that one (after I stopped laughing). Why have these two seemingly unrelated movies been thrown together? And not just that, but two completely different target audiences as well. As someone in advertising, I was clueless (pardon my pun).

Why Clueless and Transformers?

Why Transformers and a beach ball?

Why bother with a Widescreen edition of Clueless (it's hardly Blade Runner or Apocalypto)?

So I sat down and scratched my head some more, pulling the few remaining hairs out of my noggin. And then it hit me. It's supposed to bring two completely opposed target audiences together, right? No, that can't be it. Hang on, I have it...the movie is called Clueless, the promotion should be clueless! Bravo, wonderful idea WalMart. That's why you're the leader of retail. With that in mind I have some more DVD promotions for you. My treat, use them as you see fit.

This article is from Paul Michael of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. If I can get something to double as an equally handy item (for instance, a belt buckle that opens beer bottles, a portable TV that's also a flashlight) then I'm happy.

So, I'm sat researching articles for Wisebread and I look down at my computer, ashamed. It has only ever been a computer. Surely, I thought, some bright sparks out there have figured out ways to make the PC into something so much more. Well, they have. Boy, they have. They're called casemods, and I found so many different functions for the humble PC that I was blown away. Until...until...

...I found the USB gadgets! And I was even more amazed. So, I present to you my findings for making your PC work oh so much harder than it ever has before. Get it to brew you a coffee, a beer or even get some bacon grilling. I'm not kidding. If you're a lady, your PC can even give you an orgasm. Now that is double-duty and then some.

1- The Coffee Brewing PC. - This one has been around for a while. I had some trouble digging up specs on how to do it yourself, but I did come up with a few leads here .

2 - The Beer Machine. - Presumed at first to be a prank, but from what little info I found this one actualy looks feasible. Of course, mixing beer with electricity, especially something as sensitive as a PC, maybe foolhardy. Here's a link to set you on the path....

3 - The Hamster House - And why not? It's warm, it's right next to you as you play your games, it's a greatr pet home. I think. I wouldn't want to find poop in my RAM though. No details on this unusual build other than this link here .

And then...the USB gadgets....

4 - The USB Vibrator with multiple attachments - Ladies, now you know what to ask Santa for. This little package of pleasure was originally invented by Brits (so I'm told...hey, I'm happy to believe it). It retails for $36.95 here and the write up is, well, pretty good: -

Completely controlled by a tiny microprocessor, the vibrator compontents can easily be manipulated to give you an ultimate deep and penetrating orgasm. It has 10 unique preset pulse/vibrate rhythms, includes 5 interchangable latex probes and a Self Adjustable Finger Ring Vibrating bullet.

5 - The USB Pencil Sharpener - Now, if you're hard at work at your PC and still have the urge to do things the old-fashioned way, here's a cute gadget. It all runs off the PC power, again. Keep 'em sharp. Only $7.95, right here .

6 - The Homemade USB B-B-Q - I'll be honest...from the pictures I've seen, I'll pass on a sandwhich made from this stuff. Yikes. But if you do happen to be hungry and want some fresh-grilled pork, a few USB cables and a heating plate will do it. Find out more here .

7 - The USB laser-guided missile Launcher - Let's face it...when your boss sneaks up behind you at work, wouldn't it be great to give him both barrels? Well, do so at your own risk, but here's the price - just $49.99 right here .

8 - The USB fragrance burner - If you've been grilling bacon and chugging beer and coffee at your PC, this one could come in handy. A nice, pleasant device in an array of quite silly macho toys. Only $9.50 from MWAVE (but they recently ran out of stock).

9 - The USB Vacuum cleaner - So, let's imagine that you're chewing on your freshly grilled bacon sandwhich from your USB griller, and breadcrumbs fall into your keyboard. No problem. Simply pop in the USB vacuum and clean up the mess. Simple. $14.95, here .

10 - The USB Lava Lamp - 70's retro-chic updated with a 2007 twist. Not quite as funky as the original, but hey, it works off your PC's power and that kind of energy-saving, right-on idea is very hip and trendy, baby. Just $12.97 from many outlets including this one .

11 - USB heating gloves - A great invention if you happen to by typing in an igloo, but I really don't see the point otherwise. But if you do happen to suffer from cold hands instead of cold feet, pick up a pair. They'll keep your toasty. $22.99 from Perpetual Kid .

12 - The USB Butt Cooler - If you happen to have a hot butt (and I don't mean that in the way it sounds...or do I?) then you'll benefit from the USB butt cooler. Just plug it into your USB port and your cheeks will not be rosy for hours. I only found it in Japan, here .

On my internet travels, I also found USB slippers, a coffee mug warmer, a desk fan, beverage cooler, ashtray and many more weird and wonderful things. One great site to get you started is www.usbgeek.com

Now, go put the PC to work.

Photo from clubic.com

This article is from Paul Michael of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
