You can make your own hours, be your own boss, and accept projects that you like. Fortunately, with the booming gig economy and increase in paid online surveys, your days working from home may be closer than you think. We’ve covered some of the main differences between accepting gigs and completing paid surveys, so you can begin finding the right fit for you.

What Is the Gig Economy?

With the gig economy, or freelance nation, a worker can take advantage of money-making gigs, which can add up to a notable income. Sites like Thumbtack have all types of paid gigs available and offer a simplified way to match employers with the right freelance worker for the job.

The gig economy is nothing new. In fact, as Thumbtack’s chief economist explained to a Congressional committee, about half of the service professionals on the site have been in business for themselves for about five years or more. This means that freelance workers have been in the business long before the gig economy became more popular, but now they are able to use the convenience of the Internet to find more work. Today, the GAO estimates that as many as 40% of the U.S. workforce may be considered contingent workers (or independent contractors).

Potential Gigs

While the high-tech industry is taking particular advantage of the gig economy, there are a range of available gigs in all different categories, so you are likely to find something you are qualified for. For instance, you can get involved with Uber or Lyft as a driver, rent your home out on Airbnb, and/or take gigs for painting or home repairs.

Studies have shown that 68% of freelancers are concerned about finding more clients or projects in the future. Fortunately, with the gig economy, you can take advantage of multiple gigs and make money for all your varied talents, using various reputable gig sites. Some of the most common available gigs include:

Secret shopping and personal shopping

Driving

Bookkeeping

Personal training

Moving and packing

Photography

Interior design services

Cleaning

Home repairs, improvements, and painting

Reputable Gig Sites

Taking advantage of the gig economy will allow you to set your own alternative work arrangements, so you can work whenever and however is most comfortable for you. You can create your own hours and work as often as you like. You will either receive a notification when there is a gig available that matches your skill set, or employers can contact you directly when they need your services.

Either way, it is an easy way to find work, by taking advantage of the recent advancements in technology. If you are looking for money-making gigs, some of the most reputable gig sites include:

Thumbtack

Taskrabbit

Angie’s List

HourlyNerd

Etsy or Craigslist: If you are able to create your own DIY art or crafts, you may consider selling them on Etsy, eBay, or Craigslist to make money off your creativity.

Average Gig Pay

On sites like Thumbtack, you can apply your professional skills to make an equivalent hourly wage to what you were making in-office. This means that you can expect to make a comparable salary, while enjoying the work-from-home lifestyle.

On the other hand, some gigs pay between $3-$10 for quick tasks, so it will vary depending on the gig and company. With some sites, you can also send a custom quote to interested parties, allowing you to set your own wage. For this reason, it is really difficult to set an average gig pay.

Keep in mind there are also fees involved with most gig sites, which will reduce your total take-home pay. Usually, you will pay a fee based on how much you make. Being self-employed can be expensive, no matter what route of work you choose. When you count your own insurance costs, higher utility bills, taxes, office supplies, and increased fees, it can really add up, so you need to determine what your priorities are and how much you really want to work from home.

Making Money With Surveys

Many large companies are willing to spend money to get their customers’ opinions. Part of their marketing budget is invested towards finding out what you think. This means you can compete online and mobile surveys, whenever and wherever you like, getting paid for your opinion. It may be hard to believe, but you can actually make a decent amount of money just taking online surveys, once you find the right site.

You can also take advantage of referrals by getting your friends involved. They will be able to make a little extra money taking online surveys, and you’ll make money off the referral. A number of reputable survey sites also offer money or points for other simple activities, such as reading emails, signing up for offers, playing online games, reviewing free products, and completing online searches.

How to Sign Up

To make a large amount of money, you’ll need to join several survey sites at once (which are free to join) and check them at least once daily. You should never have to pay to sign up or complete surveys. Sign up for all of the survey sites at once and you’ll quickly determine which ones are your favorites and which ones work for you. When you sign up, you will be asked a number of questions about your income, lifestyle, and demographics. The surveys you receive will be based on the information you provide, so you will receive surveys that are appropriately matched to you.

Once you sign up, it can take a couple of days for the system to start sending you survey invites, so be patient. You can usually set notifications, so that you are alerted by email when a new survey becomes available to you. You can even set up a separate email account, specifically set aside for survey and gig invite emails. You won’t get rich by completing surveys, but the work is easy and fun. Most survey sites and gig sites pay with PayPal, so if you don’t already have a free account set up, you might want to look into that.

Reputable Survey Sites

The risk with survey sites is finding the right one that will actually pay on time. If you find a survey site that you think may be legitimate, search on Better Business Bureau to see if the site is registered and if there are any complaints. Some of the most reputable survey sites include:

Swagbacks

Vindale Research

InboxDollars

iPoll

My Survey

Pinecone Research

CashCrate

Toluna

OpinionPanel

Ipsos

MyPoints

SpringBoard

SurveySavvy

Average Survey Pay

Each survey site is different, so the average payout will vary. Sometimes, they’ll average around $30/hour, while other sites will only offer around $0.50 per survey. Some survey sites offer different payouts, depending on the length and complexity of the survey, while sites like Pinecone Research offer a flat payout for every survey.

Once you sign up for all of the survey sites and compare the average payout and available surveys, you’ll quickly determine which ones are worth your time. For reference, according to an ABC News report, the largest cash payment for one full-time survey member was $50.

Oftentimes, surveys will pay out in credits, which you can use for things like free gift cards. You might also receive free products or valuable perks for your review. This may be a nice addition to your salary and can help during gift-giving season, but it won’t pay the bills. In fact, most freelancers who take online surveys only average around $100/month with online surveys. Even experienced avid survey takers only earn up to $500/month on average. Once you sign up, find out how often they pay, what their payout options are, and what the minimum cashout is, so you know what to expect.

How Much Time Needs to Be Invested?

Each survey is of a different length of time, so some may take you only five minutes, while others will last up to 30 minutes. You can choose which survey to answer, so it is up to you how much time you want to invest. Gigs tend to take at least one to two hours, so they are usually a larger investment of time, but usually also have a larger payout. Gigs are also often completed outside of the home, while surveys are always completed from your computer, smartphone, or tablet. While taking surveys is a much easier way to make money, you will earn much more by completing gigs or tasks, which can be conveniently scheduled online.

Can You Do Both?

You’ll notice that during certain times of the day, survey sites are busier and it will be easier to find work. Otherwise, you can complete surveys and gigs whenever is convenient for you. Some survey sites, like iPoll, also offer mobile compatibility, so you can even complete surveys on your mobile phone, in between gigs.

With the right time management and level of dedication, you can absolutely make money with both online surveys and the gig economy. In fact, taking advantage of both the gig economy and paid surveys will get you one step closer to working full-time from home.

Are you involved in the gig economy? But there are some good ways to earn that side income and some seriously awful ones. I’m not talking about dirty jobs or hard work — there’s nothing wrong with sweating for your money or needing a shower after your side job. But it doesn’t make sense to slave away over something that isn’t actually going to put money in your pocket. The "opportunities" below fall into that category. (See also: Ways to Make Extra Cash)

1. Filling Out Surveys or Surfing the Web

This work isn’t particularly difficult, and it’s easy to sign up for. The catch is that you earn pennies (at most) for any survey you complete or any site you visit. Actually making enough money to make your time worth it is impossible. To make matters worse, most of these offers only pay out once you’ve earned $20, which can take months.

2. Investment Schemes

Whether we’re talking about day trading, trading in foreign currency, or other investment schemes, it’s rare to make a lot of money with these approaches — and fairly typical to lose a lot. There are a few individuals who have done quite well with various investment schemes, but that’s usually due to a combination of a lucky investment and the ability to invest quite a lot of money at once. For us mere mortals, it’s a bad bet.

3. Medical Testing

Agreeing to try out new drugs or other medical procedures for money sounds like an easy thing to do. But while there are some people who make something approaching a full-time income from being a test subject, it requires not informing one lab that you're working for another lab. That’s because being a lab rat doesn’t pay well. Of course, that’s not even considering the side effects you might experience.

4. Selling Body Fluids or Organs

While selling an organ is illegal in the U.S., selling plasma, eggs (if you’re a woman), and other bits of yourself is considered okay. It’s not particularly lucrative, though — even selling your eggs, which used to bring in a check of around $10,000, now pays closer to $3,000. Considering that there can be some major side effects, depending on how a doctor chooses to harvest those eggs, it’s not an equitable pay off. Giving plasma repeatedly can also impact your health.

5. Sign Spinner

Standing by the side of the road to draw attention to a local business, such as by spinning a sign, has a long history. Businesses have hired people to stand outside their locations and convince buyers to enter for centuries. But it’s become a less lucrative job over the years and can now rank particularly poorly, especially with the need to stand near busy streets and breathe in pollution for hours on end.

6. Renting Out Your Stuff

There are an increasing number of websites that let you rent out your car, parking spaces, a spare room, tools, or anything else you might have. But because most of these sites orchestrate short-term loans, you’re not about to raise a lot of money this way. You better have other motives for renting out your things than just cash.

7. Recycling Scrap Metal

The prices that recyclers pay for scrap metal fluctuate pretty regularly. Even when they’re good, though, it’s hard to turn recycling scrap metal into a lucrative opportunity. In order to make a sizable amount of money (think over $500), you need to turn in something like an old car or camper. Collecting old soda cans isn’t even going to earn you minimum wage, and you might get pretty smelly hunting them down.

8. Treasure Hunting

Infomercials for metal detectors promise that you’ll find all sorts of valuables while taking a relaxing stroll down the beach. But even if you take a more active approach to finding some treasure, the odds of actually finding something are slim.

9. Work-at-Home Schemes

There are plenty of lucrative ways to work from home, but there’s a particular work-at-home scam that goes around on a regular basis. Someone will post an ad offering people the chance to make money stuffing envelopes or assembling crafts at home — some sort of situation where you have to buy supplies from the advertiser before you can start making money. But when you actually do the work, the scammer tells you that your work doesn’t meet requirements.

10. Playing Video Games

There actually used to be some well-paying opportunities that went along with playing video games, like creating in-game items and then selling them for real-world money. But these days, you have to compete with players in cheaper markets who have dramatically driven down the value of most of the items you can commonly sell.

You may read through this list and think that you could make some serious money with any of these options — that you can buck the curve. But the reality is that with each of these situations, earning money is incredibly difficult. It requires more luck than it really ought to, and the odds are good that you won’t even hit minimum wage with any of these ventures. You’d be better off picking up a second job before considering any one of these options.

This article is from Thursday Bram of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. I started my internet research approximately 1 1/2 years ago. The information I found along the way was interesting, encouraging, and a little disappointing. Here is what I have found.

What does a survey company do?

Survey companies are hired by other companies to prepare paid surveys for new products or television ads before they share them with the masses. Depending on the survey company, in a typical day you could watch a movie preview, read about a new cereal, share your opinions about cell phones, or watch a video about current affairs.

What will I get paid?

Survey companies pay in a variety of ways. Some will give you points for each survey that you complete that may be redeemed for cash, merchandise, or entries into giveaways. Some companies will pay you directly when you have reached a pre-set amount of banked money. Still others only give you chances to enter giveaways. Knowing ahead of time what each company offers will help you to make an informed decision on which ones to sign up with. An added bonus to participating in surveys is that many times companies want you to try their new products, so you will receive free items in the mail to test and give your feedback on. In recent months I have tested shoes, gum, deodorant, toilet paper, make-up, perfume, frozen food, and dog food.

How much time will this take?

That really depends on you. I have personally signed up with over 40 survey companies. All of the companies will e-mail you when there is a survey available. Some companies will send you multiple surveys a day while others might send you one once a month. Many of the companies will tell you ahead of time how long they estimate the survey will take to complete. I find that most of the time it does not take me as long as the estimate to complete the survey. The more time you have to invest in taking surveys, the more rewards you will receive.

How do I get started?

I have compiled a long list of survey companies that I personally am a member of and I know to be legitimate. Each company will ask you to fill out a demographic profile. The reason for this is so that they can send you surveys that you will qualify for. If you don’t smoke, there is no reason to send you a survey about cigarettes. Keep in mind that there will still be many surveys that you will not qualify for. I qualify for about 40% of the ones I try.

I recently spoke to Brad White from United Sample, a company that hosts several on-line survey companies, and he said that 70% of the people that sign up with his company never take the time to fill out the profile and never do another survey. There could be many reasons for this. Perhaps the excitement of earning money wears off quickly, or the time commitment is more than some people anticipated.

Do I need to pay anything?

Never. If you come across a survey company that is asking you for money, stay clear. Legitimate companies need you and are willing to pay you for your time.

My Personal Favorites

Here is a list of survey companies that I have had the most success:

Lightspeed

Valued Opinions

Pinecone Research

SurveyHead

MySurvey

Mindfield

Opinion Outpost

I took the time to calculate the amount of money I received in 2009 from taking on-line surveys and it was over $1,000. Not bad for a stay-at-home mom doing this in between cooking, cleaning, and shuttling kids around. I wish you the best of luck in your pursuit. You can do it too!

Guest Post Blurb:

This is a guest post by Katie Adauto. Yes. There are lots of reputable marketing companies that run valuable research for major brand companies, and that compensate you for your time. But there are also a lot of copycat and scam companies that try to blend in with legitimate ones. With hundreds, possibly thousands of "Get Paid To" (GPT) sites around, how can you tell the difference?

We scoured the web to find reviews and articles written by real people with real experience. Just start slow -- sign up for the most reputable ones (listed below) and add more as you go. You don't need to pay someone else to do that for you.

#2. Sign up for research companies, not directories. Some sites make their money through referral fees. They'll get your information and sign you up with hundreds of other survey companies who pay for new users. These might be hard to spot at first because they don't require a fee like the membership clubs mentioned above. Look for the "about us" section and see whether the company actually conducts research on behalf of real clients. Look out for language like "we send you surveys from top survey companies."

#3. Protect your privacy. Legitimate research companies will protect your privacy, so a quick and dirty way to verify if a survey company is on the up and up is to read their private policy terms. Do they "share" your information with their "partners"?

#4. Watch out for paid offer sites. Many sites present themselves as paid survey sites but are really paid offer sites. These sites make money by getting people to sign up for offers, click on advertisements, and provide their email addresses. You can spot these by their super long list of "offers" that you have to go through in order to complete the survey or redeem your prize. They might offer you something like $20 to sign up for a service that costs $5.99/month (presumably you'll cancel after the first month). They might also pay you to read emails and click on the advertisements. Know that your information is most definitely being sold, and it's not something they can hide very well in their private policy terms.

Paid offers aren't necessarily scams. They're doable, just like paid surveys, but it takes a real savvy and dedicated user to sort through all the fine print, keep detailed records, and not mind personal information being sold to the highest bidder.

#5. Watch out for spyware. Some sites require that you download a program so they can monitor your web behavior. Some people are fine with this. Just know that there are plenty of companies that don't require this so if it makes you uncomfortable, skip it and try another site. If you do decide to register, don't use that computer for any online activity that has sensitive information.

#6. Fill out your profile. Now that you know the difference between sites that sell your information versus sites that don't, make sure to fill out your profile on the legitimate paid survey sites. You won't get sent surveys unless you match their profile, so not filling them out will just disqualify you from the beginning. Sometimes you still need to go through a screener survey in order to qualify for the longer survey. Some sites will give you a small compensation even if you don't qualify.

#7. Find out how you're paid. Some pay in cash. Some give points that get converted to cash. Others pay with gift cards, products, and sweepstake entries. Before you take a survey or accept a product review, know how you'll be compensated. Also, after you've done a few surveys for a company, check your account to make sure you're being properly credited and how long you'll have to wait to redeem your points for cash or product. Watch out for any redemption deadlines (some points might expire before you've accrued enough to cash out), and make sure that the gift cards they offer are valuable to you if the company doesn't offer cash.

#8. Be active. Some survey sites send you more surveys if you are more active. They might even send you surveys with higher payouts. Check your account and make sure your profiles are updated so you're getting the most relevant surveys. Also, some sites require a certain amount of activity in order to keep your account active, which means keeping any non-redeemed earnings valid.

#9. Keep records. The only way to decide whether a survey site works for you is to keep records on your earnings and time spent. Some survey sites will provide a higher ROI. If you sign up with a bunch of sites and take any survey that falls into your inbox, you may get discouraged by the spammy, low paying sites and not notice the quality ones that actually make you money.

#10. Have a dedicated email, mailing address, and credit card. Expect a lot of spam, both in your email inbox and real mailbox. And if you're going to try out the paid offers route, definitely make sure to have a separate credit card that you can monitor for identity theft and unauthorized charges. You might also consider doing all your paid survey/offers on a dedicated computer that doesn't have access to sensitive files or online information.

Got thoughts, comments, more to add? Big Dire Straits fan here. But in the case of this article, and my subject of choice, it's completely true. You'll see and hear an awful lot about online surveys. You'll find outrageous claims, too. Let me assure you, right now, that taking a survey here and there is not going to let you quit your day job — or any other job. This is not a way to make a fortune. This is not a path to riches paved with gold. Let's face it, if everyone could sit at home doing surveys all day, everyone would be doing it.

But as a way to make a little extra spending money, checking a few boxes when you're already online is not a bad way to do it. And it doesn't take a whole bunch of your time. In the past month I've earned over $100 in cash and rewards, all for a simple opinion here and there. So, let me give you my recommendations and also some advice on what to avoid.

1. Never Pay to Take a Survey

That also means never join a website that asks for a sign-up fee in order to take surveys. Legitimate survey companies pay you for your time, not the other way around. So if anyone is asking for cash upfront, either as a one-off or a monthly fee, run away.

2. Is It Worth Your Time?

Simple question but one worth figuring out. Some surveys offer some pretty nice incentives. I've had as much as $60 for just 40 minutes of my time. Not so bad. Other surveys take as little as five to 10 minutes, but only offer $1 in either cash or reward points as payment. Not so good. Then again, if you're just buzzing around the net looking for something to do, $1 here and there soon adds up over time. Surveys are generally a take-them-or-leave-them affair, so pick and choose based on your personal situation.

3. Don't Expect Cold, Hard Cash

It's a rare occasion when companies dish out the green willy-nilly. These days, a lot of survey sites offer online points to exchange for magazine subscriptions, money-off vouchers and other goods. It's not quite cash but it often works out well for your wallet. One site I enjoy offers free movie rental vouchers. It's been a long time since I've paid for a movie rental.

4. Fill Out the Extended Profiles

The more the survey sites know about you and your hobbies, the more surveys you'll get to take. Simple as that.

5. An Invitation to a Survey May Not Lead to Payment

After signing up to a survey site, you may get many offers in a week. But a set of pre-screening questions can rule you out of the paid section of the survey. You may find ways to get around this, basically by fibbing in order to move on (it's often easy to see where the survey is leading and play along in order to get the payment). I'd avoid this for several reasons. First, it's dishonest. But if that doesn't bother you, the endless boredom that ensues by filling out surveys on hi-tech computer servers or company insurance policies will soon put you off for life. Be honest, surveys should be a fun way to spend your time.

6. Your Spare Time Means Just That

It's fine to do surveys on your lunch hour or at home. But if you start taking surveys while you're at work, you're not only stealing time from your employer, but also jeopardizing your paying job. And if you lose that, no amount of surveys will make up for that lost income.

7. The Big Question — Where Do You Start?

I can heartily recommend THREE sites to start the ball rolling for you. They are:

Toluna — Great site, pays you back in cash and the surveys are a nice mixed bag.
Survey Savvy — Again, a great site that pays you in cash for your opinions.
e-Rewards — This one pays you back in reward points which can be exchanged for goods and vouchers. I love it.

So, there you go. A surveys 101 for you all. I hope it gets you on the path to money for nothing, and that's something we could all use.

This article is from Paul Michael of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
