Luckily there are some cost-effective purchases that can help you save money in the long run.

1. Tent

Camping can be a great alternative to staying in pricey hotels while you travel, but you will have to pay some one-time costs for a tent, sleeping bag, and a few other camping basics. You can purchase a light, quality tent for under $150 on Amazon. When you consider that is less than the cost of one hotel night in many places, you can see how quickly this investment will pay for itself.

Having a tent also gives you the freedom to sleep in some of the world's most remote and beautiful places. Laws about where you can camp vary by location. For example, it's legal to camp on beaches in Mexico's Baja California, and it won't cost you anything. In the U.S., if you want to pitch your tent at an established campground, you'll usually have to pay, but you may be able to do primitive camping in some areas for free. Check with the U.S. Forest Service or state authorities in the area where you plan to camp. I've camped in many places in the world, and I've never paid more than $30. Water filter

Bottled water can cost $1 or more. That's not expensive, but it can add up, especially if you're in a place where the tap water is not safe to drink.

You can buy an easy-to-use and affordable filter that enables you to drink water anywhere you go. Not only will you save money on bottled water, but you can reduce waste by cutting down your consumption of plastic. It is eco-friendly and budget-friendly.

There are a variety of water filters available. "Water straws" are lightweight and portable. This type of filter won't take up much space in your bag, and usually fits into a standard-sized water bottle. You can either bring your own empty bottle or purchase a cheap one at your destination to reuse.

On a wilderness canoe trip through the Boundary Waters, Minnesota, I found a water straw indispensable. There were no roads or drinking water in the area, and bringing water along wasn't practical because it's heavy and would have taken up a lot of space in the kayaks. The best option was to filter water from the pristine lakes.

Another option for treating water is to use iodine pills, which are cheap and easy to transport. However, the disadvantage of iodine is that you have to wait half an hour for the treatment to become effective, while with a water straw filter system, the water is ready to drink as soon as you've filtered it.

There are also water bottles that have built-in water filters, which can make filtering water even easier. The filters are only safe for a certain number of uses, but they are still economical compared to buying bottled water. (See also: 5 Travel Must-Haves)

3. Luggage scale

A digital luggage scale costs about $10 and can help you avoid paying costly overweight baggage charges at the airport. I've seen these charges run from $50 into the hundreds.

Plus, these scales are light and easy to transport so you can bring them along on your trip. That way, when you're ready to travel home, you won't have to stress about the weight of any souvenirs or other items you accumulated while you were away. (See also: How to Save on Travel Gear)

4. Good shoes

Investing in a quality pair of shoes before your trip is a sure way to save money. If you can walk comfortably, you can avoid paying for expensive taxi cabs to get around once you reach your destination.

Not only is walking a great way to save money, it will also help you stay active and better see the place you are visiting. When you're buying shoes, try to pick a pair that provides adequate support without being too heavy. You'll also want them in a design you genuinely like and a style that can go with most of your clothes. Buying shoes that are versatile means that you can pack a little lighter.

Lems makes comfortable and incredibly portable travel footwear that I use and love.

5. Travel credit card

If you're already planning your next trip, now is a good time to sign up for a travel credit card. A good card will charge you no foreign transaction fees. That's the fee that some cards charge you for any purchases you make in another currency. It's usually around 3 percent, which means if you charge $1,000 on your trip, you'd have to pay an additional $30 in foreign transaction fees.

By signing up for a travel credit card, you can also earn rewards for your next trip. Some credit cards offer bonus points when you sign up that are worth hundreds of dollars in travel. One sign-up bonus I got was so big that I have points left over after using it to purchase a round-trip flight from the United States to Mexico, and a domestic flight in Mexico. (See also: Don't Make These Credit Card Bonus Mistakes)

Many travel cards also come with money-saving perks such as free checked bags on flights, free rental car insurance, free trip cancellation insurance and other types of travel coverage.

The good news with a travel credit card is that you may not even have to "purchase" it at all. Many travel credit cards will waive their annual fee for the first year, as an additional incentive to get you to sign up.

Like this article? Here's a useful list of items you will never need once you get wherever you're going. These things will become a waste of space in your luggage, not to mention a waste of the time you'll spend packing and unpacking them.

1. Multiple Pairs of Shoes

I get it, shoes are awesome. But if you're being completely honest with yourself, whether you're going on a weeklong trip or you'll be backpacking around the world, you don't need that many pairs of shoes. It may be hard, but it's not impossible to pare down your shoes.

Shoes take up space and they weigh a fair amount. You will never regret bringing one pair of functional, semi-fashionable sneakers. These will come in handy at literally any destination, since traveling usually entails some amount of walking. So be kind to your feet and bring appropriate footwear.

Depending on your destination, you should also bring one pair of versatile sandals. This means something that you can wear out at night or to the beach during the day. These should not give you blisters within five minutes of putting them on your feet.

2. Excessive Toiletries

You might have a complicated and involved skin care routine that includes face wash, toner, moisturizer, eye cream, and more. You might be loathe to go without your favorite bath soap and shampoo during your trip. But you'll survive. Not only do these items take up space, they have the potential to leak and get flagged by security. Use what the hotel or a local store offers. It'll be fine, really.

3. Too Many Electronics

We all love our gadgets and electronics. Surely, you're going to bring your phone and maybe your computer along. But traveling is also a time to disconnect, and you don't want to get bogged down into organizing and packing all of those extra charging cords — only to end up not using any of them because you were too busy having a good time.

Electronics take up space, they weigh a lot, and they're an extra thing to worry about getting stolen since they're usually among the higher-value items you'll have with you. Limit it and reduce them whenever it's possible.

4. Towels

That's right. They seem like an item you can't live without, but you really don't need to pack towels. If you are on a backpacking trip, you can bring a microfiber backpacking towel along or just dry off with a cotton T-shirt.

Towels that are packed away in your bag for any amount of time are going to get stinky and funky really fast. You'll be happier you left them at home.

5. Easy and Cheap Things You Can Buy

Nobody should be packing anything that you'll want to buy once you've reached your destination (preferably with a no foreign transaction fee credit card). Consider the place you're going and identify things you're interested in buying, whether they're practical items that cost less or just souvenirs.

Don't bring anything that falls into this category. You can always make your purchases on the road with space to spare in your bag.

Like this post? That’s why we’re here to help you find some of the very best running shoes for runners of all levels.

What Are Women’s Running Shoes?

Running shoes are specialty shoes that offer additional cushioning, flexing at the bar of the foot, and adequate traction and stability, so that you can run safely and comfortably. They may take additional measurements and can then make an expert customized recommendation. You can also use online shoe advisers for quick assistance, like the one offered by Runner’s World.

Top 5 Women’s Running Shoes

Brooks Women's Adrenaline GTS 15 Shoe

The Brooks Women's Adrenaline GTS 15 Shoes are ideal for most feet. My office desk drawers are a testament to 30+ years of dealing with "work clothes" emergencies. People come to me for repairs. I am the Office Mom of clothing emergencies.

Over the years, I have learned how to make quick fixes inexpensively. Here are some tried-and-true fixes.

1. Pantyhose/Nylons

My number one solution is to keep a spare pair in my desk. However, sometimes even that back-up pair fails — and always right before a meeting or a presentation. Naturally! A squirt of hairspray will stop that run. If you don't have hairspray, a little clear nail polish will also do the trick. Unfortunately, both are smelly, so try to fix quickly so they have time to dry.

2. Instant Seamstress

I wish I had a nickel for every time someone has borrowed my sewing kit. Aside from the needle and thread, the most often-requested item is the tape measure. This kit also contains some buttons, which are very handy, as well as small scissors.

3. Click, Clack, Busted Heel Cap

Every woman's nightmare: The doggone broken heel cap. They never break at home, do they? Always, every darn time, at work or on your way somewhere. Unless you like limping and clicking around all day (and explaining it a million times), you might want to make a very small investment in these heel caps.

4. Sole to Sole

Guys, if your shoe soles are worn out, you may save money by trying the repair yourself — and the rubber is made by Goodyear! They work on both dress shoes as well as boots.

5. Expensive Leather

It's upsetting to spend a lot of money on leather shoes only to scuff or scratch them. That is why you might try this leather repair product. You can even mix your own color. It also works on the couch, other furniture, car seats, coats, etc.

6. Sweater Saver

Ever snag a favorite sweater, and put a hole in it? Don't worry, you can fix it! What do you need? Just a simple sewing needle for a small hole, or a crochet needle for a larger one.

7. Stuck Zipper

This hint could not be cheaper. Where is that #2 pencil? First try rubbing the pencil on the zipper (the lead may lubricate it enough for it to work). If it is more complicated, check out this video for un-sticking a zipper.

8. Eyeglass Repairs

We even take our eyeglass repair kit with us on vacations — it is that handy. It can be really miserable to lose a screw in your glasses and be nowhere near an optometrist. This little eyeglass repair kit is inexpensive and easy to pack.

9. Deodorant Smudges

I seem to pull this move most of the time when I am wearing black, which is just peachy because then it really stands out. Try dampening a washcloth or towel, wring it out really well, and gently brush off the smudge. Don't use a paper towel, which will just make matters worse.

10. Pilly Sweater

Sometimes I fail to notice that my sweaters have pills. You know what I mean — the little fuzzy balls under your arms or along side seams. It looks pretty crummy. I love this sweater shaver, which gently removes those furry things and has never caused any harm to my favorite sweaters.

11. Lunch Disaster

I shouldn't be allowed to ever eat mustard, which usually ends up on me, not in me. My husband, who is a laundry wizard, bought me these nifty little stain wipes. They fit easily into my purse and will tide me over (pun intended) until the clothing can be properly washed.

12. Hem on the Loose

Raid the office supply cabinet. Got packing tape? That will hold that hem until you can get it fixed properly. Don't be tempted to get out your stapler, which will damage the fabric.

13. Lint No More

My dogs have white fur. I like to wear black. See the problem? I buy lint brushes by the three-pack, but for the office, I love these mini lint rollers that fit in my desk or tote bag.

14. Sneaker Separation

This hint isn't that quick, since your shoes will need to dry at least overnight, but it's a good one. I wear my sneakers until the bitter end, so I was disappointed when a fairly new pair started "flapping" in the soles. They were otherwise in good shape and I didn't want to part with them just yet. Shoe Goo to the rescue! My handy husband squeezed out a layer between the flapping soles and the shoes, let dry overnight, and the shoes were almost as good as new. It is also waterproof and really inexpensive. It also works on broken high heels.

15. The Last Resort

Buy assorted safety pins. Thank me later.

What are your favorite, reliable, cheap sartorial save-the-dayers?

Like this article? (See also: 8 Ways to Help Your Clothes Last Longer)

With that in mind, take a look at these 10 ways to make your shoes last longer and your clothing budget go farther.

1. Invest in Quality From the Get-go

Like anything else you purchase, focusing on quality when you're buying a new pair of shoes will pay off in the long run. Well-constructed shoes can handle much more wear and tear than a cheap pair, and you won't have to keep replacing them so often. The materials used matter, too. Choose shoes made of natural materials like leather or suede.

2. Protect the Soles

The soles of your shoes are what take the brunt of the daily beating, so it's important to protect them to ensure that your shoes last as long as possible. You can find protectors for all kinds of shoes online, like Sole Protectors for sneakers and KiiX for high heels.

3. Don't Use the Washing Machine

For canvas shoes especially, it's easy to toss them in the washer and dryer for a quick cleaning, but that will just wear them out faster. Scrub the shoes by hand instead, and do it immediately so the dirt doesn't start to accumulate to a point of no return.

4. Stuff With Newspaper

There are several benefits to stuffing your shoes with newspaper, like alleviating odor, drying them out if they get wet, preventing dry rot, and preserving their shape.

5. Spray With a Water Repellent

"Always, always, always spray your shoes with water repellent," pleads Sandra M. Einstein, an organizing and coaching consultant. Waterproofing your shoes will protect them from the elements, which is especially important when the winter weather rolls in. In addition, you also want to wash off salt that may get on your shoes to avoid stains.

6. Repair Before You Replace

Think you've broken your shoes? You may just need a restoration. "Is the leather looking dull and you can't find shoe polish in that color?" asks freelance writer and author Carol Gee. "Chances are your local shoe repair person does. I once scraped the toe of my favorite grape-colored pumps while walking up some concrete steps. I took them to shoe repair guy who matched the color, replaced the taps on the heels, and buffed them to look like brand-new."

7. Store in a Safe Place

Damage to your shoes isn't always done while they're on your feet. Where you're storing them after you take them off can contribute to their deterioration, so it's important to find just the right spot. Women's Health magazine says that keeping your shoes in the wrong places could cause fading, scratching, and other damage. Keep your shoes away from sunlight, and don't just throw them in the closet. "Neatly line them up in pairs on your closet's floor or on a shelf with ample breathing room between pairs," the mag advises.

8. Use a Shoehorn

Your foot isn't likely to slide effortlessly into a shoe with laces. You usually have to do a little work to get them on, which often results in crunching the heel collar with the bottom of your foot while you work your fingers in. You can avoid this entirely and keep the heel collars in good condition by always using a shoehorn, says Joe Rocco, owner of Jim's Shoe Repair in New York City.

9. Buff and Shine Your Dress Shoes

Keep your dress shoes sparkling by spot cleaning them after every wear. After they're clean, apply polish to any scuffs or marks that may have occurred. Once the polish is dry, buff them with a rag or an old T-shirt and. If you're consistent in this practice, your shoes could last decades.

10. Apply a Moisturizer

Seriously — moisturizing your shoes is totally a thing. It mostly applies to leather shoes, and it helps prevent potential cracking due to damage from the elements. Just like you bought quality shoes, however, you want to get a quality shoe moisturizer. "A quality shoe cream will absorb into the leather, nourish your shoes, and keep them fresh," says Andrea Mitchell, editor of the blog Fox in Flats. "Avoid shoe creams that sit on top of the leather — they provide a temporary solution only, and will rub off on the hem of your pants. Not cool."

Do you have any tips on how to make shoes last longer? Please share in comments!

Like this article? Even when I splurged on an expensive pair of dress shoes for work, I couldn't wait to take them off at the end of the day, even though I worked at a desk for most of the day.

That changed when I discovered Clarks dress shoes for men about a dozen years ago.

Why I Bought My First Pair of Clarks

It happened before I took a fall trip to Europe. I wanted to buy some comfortable but stylish walking shoes that could also double as dress shoes.

I didn't want to be the tourist walking around in comfy white tennis shoes. I wanted to be mistaken for a local while walking miles each day in shoes that had the odd combination I was searching for: dress shoes that felt good after a day of walking. I also wanted shoes that were waterproof.

I also wanted comfortable shoes because I had recently suffered a plantar fasciitis injury, a stretching of an area near the heel that isn't supposed to stretch.

To make a long story short, I bought some expensive orthotic inserts to put into my shoes to help provide arch support. I also took a class from my medical provider on foot injuries, and Clarks were listed as a good shoe to try out for better arch support.

This was back before shopping on the Internet was commonplace, so I had to search around for a shoe store that sold Clarks. A store in Berkeley, about 20 miles from my home, sold them, but they had to be ordered and took a few weeks to arrive. I paid about $100, which at the time seemed like a crazy amount of money to spend on good shoes, and still does.

What's Great About Them

A new pair of shoes usually feel great at the store or the first time you wear them, though once you break the stiffness out of them, they can then feel much less comfortable than they originally did. I don't know how that happens with new dress shoes I buy, but the real test is how good they feel after wearing them all day.

Walking in Comfort

The first pair of Clarks I bought felt good all day and did exactly what I wanted them to do during my vacation. My feet didn't ache after a few hours, I didn't feel any effects of plantar fasciitis, and I could explore all day in comfortable shoes without having to return to a hotel at night to change into dress shoes to wear out to dinner.

I was glad to take them off at the end of the day, as I expect I would with any shoe after a day of sightseeing, but my feet weren't sore throughout the day like they were in other shoes.

Easy to Get On and Off

Many men's dress shoes are slip-ons, meaning they don't have laces and can be slipped on and off easily. But I've found other brands of slip-on shoes (Land's End, for one) to have a tight tongue.

While slip-ons may not be the style for everyone, the Clarks I wore looked good walking around town or at a formal event, and I've danced in them at weddings without my feet hurting.

Clarks Offers Free Shipping, Returns, and No Minimum

Shoe shopping has changed a lot since I bought my first pair of Clarks — which I still own — and I no longer have to drive to another city to buy a pair of shoes that arrived in the mail. There's now a Clarks store near my home, which is dangerous, but I can usually find better prices online at websites such as Zappos.

If I can't find the types of Clarks I want at Zappos, I'll go to the Clarks website, which offers free ground shipping without a minimum purchase amount. It also offers free returns, either by mail or to a Clarks store.

What Clarks Compare To

After I discovered the comfort of Clarks, the cheapskate in me continued to want to look for inexpensive shoes that were comfortable enough for a day of walking. Since my original purchase of black slip-on dress shoes from Clarks, I've bought the same style in brown, and I have also bought at least three casual walking shoes from Clarks.

I've bought other shoes from Rockport, Reebok, Land's End, and a cheap pair from Costco that were so painful I stopped wearing them after a week. Most of those have been tennis shoes or casual shoes that I wouldn't consider dress shoes. I've even bought Hush Puppies penny loafers — which were expensive and looked great — but are nowhere near Clarks in their ability to take a beating walking around all day.

The key difference I've noticed between Clarks and others is that not only does Clarks offer excellent arch support, but its thick padding and the shoe's ability to move with my foot make it much easier to walk in than any other shoe.

Who Clarks Shoes Are Best For

If you have plantar fasciitis, bad arches or other foot problems, Clarks are worth giving a try. Casual walking shoes may be easy to find in another brand, but Clarks' dress shoes for men are the best I've found for good looking dress shoes that can be worn all day.

How They Could Be Better

I have no major complaints about the Clarks dress shoes I've bought. The pairs I've bought have held up well for years partly, I think, because I sub them out for other shoes and don't wear the same pair for more than a week.

Clarks' casual walking shoes, however, could use some work. I've bought at least three pairs with its Wavewalk technology, and while I've found them to be comfortable walking shoes, they're not as comfy over time as the dress shoes I've bought from Clarks.

Clarks also seems to change shoe styles often, so sometimes a year or so later when I want to buy the same shoes again, the style has been discontinued, and I have to try something else.

What They Don't Tell You at the Shoe Store

If you're shopping online, you're shopping at your own peril. At the shoe store, I expect expert advice and have often gotten it at a Clarks store with advice on how to polish them correctly and how to take care of them. But one thing that they haven't told me was something I've heard from other shoe salespeople — switch the shoes out for another pair every few days or every week, so that they have time to breathe.

If you have orthotics to insert, be sure to put them in the shoes you're trying on in the shoe store to make sure it's a comfortable fit. You may have to go up half a size and get extra wide shoes to accommodate the orthotics.

Bottom Line Recommendation

The men's dress shoes from Clarks are the most comfortable dress shoes I've ever worn. It's not even a contest. They've helped with my foot problems, and have been comfortable for either a night out or walking all day on cobbled streets. I've even been mistaken for a local and asked for directions while wearing them in another country.

Where to Get Yours

If you can find a Clarks outlet store, that's probably where you'll find the best deals. If you don't mind paying full retail, go to a Clarks store or buy directly from Clarks online.

Zappos has great prices. I've found some Clarks shoes there that were half the price of what Clarks had on its website. Zappos has less of a selection than Clarks will have at its stores or website, but if you find the style you like, it's likely to be cheaper there.

Amazon, like everything else in our lives, sells Clarks and can have great deals, too.

Get your own pair of Clarks today!

What are your favorite comfortable men's dress shoes?

This article is from Aaron Crowe of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Really, I do. Years of soccer and dancing as a child have resulted in seriously ganked up feet as an adult. My right foot is so deformed that I can't wear a lot of closed toe shoes, never mind sandals. So, when I discovered Mohops, it was as if the great shoe goddess had schlepped forward out of the underworld and showered all her dark glory upon my bum pinky toe.

What Are These Magical Shoes?

Designed by Chicago-based architect, Annie Mohaupt, Mohops are wood-soled, eco-friendly, vegan shoes that can be laced with ribbon or fabric to create an almost infinite number of sandal styles.

Mohops are bespoke footwear A.K.A. custom made from scratch at the Mohop workshop in Chicago. The shoes consist of a wood heel and a patented system of elasticized loops through which the wearer can lace her choice of ribbons, fabric, or trim.

In addition to heel height, loop layout, and loop number, Mohop customers can choose from three different wood choices, six different footbed colors, two different loop colors, four different nail head colors, and three different sole colors.

The company also offers a more affordable "bridge" line of flats called "Mopeds." They are less expensive than the bespoke line, as they are produced in standard sizes unlike the custom Mohops. They've also introduced Mokobos, a line of platform sandals. Mokobos are based on Okobo, the traditional, Japanese willow wood sandals worn by maiko (apprentice geisha). These platforms have a very slight rise, but have the foot feel of a flatter shoe. For those who care, their modern profile is currently on trend for fall footwear.

What's Great About Them

I own two pairs of bespoke Mohops: Low Maple Slides and High Walnut Wedges. These shoes were custom made for me based on an actual tracing of my feet and an email consultation with Annie Mohaupt. I'm saving up for a pair of the Mopeds flats for an upcoming trip overseas.

They're Comfortable

For most of my life, part of being a lady has meant enduring foot pain for the sake of cute footwear. I know that I'm not alone. I know many women who have Denial Bunions from wearing impractical shoes. I suspect that Annie Mohaupt knows about suffering for shoes too, as Mohops, even the high wedges, are well-balanced, and exquisitely comfortable. Even in my high Mohop wedges I can stand all day without foot pain. I don't think it's a coincidence that Mohop has an all-woman workshop.

They're Custom Made

Since the ball of my foot is shorter than average, my feet tend to slide towards the front of most heels. This makes most heels hugely uncomfortable, as the arch support doesn't actually hit the arches of my feet. This forward slide also gives me the appearance that I'm playing dress up with my mother's shoes, as I end up with that unsightly extra space at the back of the shoe. Both pairs of Mohops fit like they were made just for me…because they were. Per my request Annie also added an extra set of loops to the toes of my Low Maple Slides, so I would have additional bum toe-hiding lacing possibilities.

Since these shoes are made to order, they are obviously a great option for people with big, tiny, extra-wide, extra-narrow, or odd-sized feet.

They're Versatile

Even for people with pretty feet, Mohops are superheroes of the shoe rack. Because of the stupidly small closets in Dinky Manor, I am constantly searching for convertible or reversible clothes that allow me to shrink the physical size of my wardrobe without shrinking my outfit choices.

Mohops are also wonderful wedding shoes, as the bride can match her shoes with the colors of her wedding, or even with the trim of her gown. (Not to mention they would be super wearable on the honeymoon and after.)

They're Great for Travel

Although I already own two pairs of bespoke Mohops, I'm actually coveting the not-custom Moped flats because I'm prepping for a 100-day job overseas that will take me from rainy London to the arid desert of Spain and the sunny Canary Islands off the coast of Africa. Mopeds are the ultimate cute travel shoe. The flats are flat, light, and easy to pack. Also, from furiously e-stalking the Mohop photo gallery, I know that even though socks with sandals is generally a fashion no-no, there are plenty of Chicago girls who are coordinating their woolly stockings and leg warmers with their ribbon collection to winterize their Mohops.

They're Vegan and Socially Responsible

All of my vegan friends have tremendous trouble finding dressy, cruelty-free footwear. It's especially hard for them to find non-leather brown shoes that don't look cheesy. Unless I lace my shoes with leather, my Mohops are creature-free.

Mohop really works hard to be socially conscious, too. They've partnered with Jhoole, a non-profit in India that pays women fair-trade wages to hand make one-of-a-kind Mohop laces out of sarees (or saris). 100% of the purchase price of the Mohop saree laces goes back to the Jhoole training center that currently is working with 500 women and building a computer center.

What Mohops Compare To

Due to the wood heel, the experience of wearing Mohops is very similar to wearing a top quality Swedish clog or Dr. Scholl's famous leg toning sandals. If you've never worn shoes that don't have a flexible sole, the sensation of walking on wood takes some getting used to.

Although my Mohops are pricier than my already expensive, sky-high Swedish Hasbeens clogs that never go on sale, the Mohops have a more polished appearance, as the clogs have an unfinished wooden sole and visible staples that I would not call decorative. Sooner rather than later I am going to have to take my Hasbeens into my cobbler for alteration, as the leather uppers will stretch to the point my feet will scoot around inside. By comparison, if I need to adjust my Mohops, I simply tighten or loosen the lacing.

I also own several pairs of Manolo Blahnik and Ferragamo shoes, which are two handmade shoes that are known for the comfort of their heels. Mohops are just as comfy as these famous designer labels.

How They Could Be Better

At $415 for my bespoke High Walnut Wedges, Mohops rival the prices of other top shoe brands. That said, they are expensive, but frugal. A set of seven ribbons and several pairs of wood and metal rings are included with every pair, along with a card set that show how to lace the shoes in seven different ways. Right out of the box, I have 49 different pairs of shoes.

Because these shoes are not mass-produced, I experienced a two week lag between the time that I ordered my shoes and the time they arrived via Priority Mail. Anticipate a delay in receiving your order. That said, the shoes arrive in a neat plastic shoe box, which also contains a silk bag full of ribbons, rings, and other treats, making the shoes giftable straight out of the packing box.

Bottom Line Recommendation

If you have problematic feet, then Mohops are a wardrobe staple. For everyone else, they are a creative way to accessorize and improve the wearability of your wardrobe.

Where to Get Yours

Mohops can be purchased in person at a very limited number of retailers. Everyone else must take the risk of buying shoes online. Annie makes this process much less daunting by helpfully supplying printable shoe charts and providing excellent customer support via email.

The Mohop Etsy store offers Mopeds and Mokobos, and occasionally, bespoke Mohops that have come back for one reason or another.

A limited selection of (very affordable!) sandals are available through Amazon.

Get your pair today!

What are your favorite comfortable, wooden, bespoke, vegan shoes?

This article is from Max Wong of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. I like having shoes. I like having cute shoes. OK, that's not exactly the whole truth either — I like having cute shoes that are well-made, comfortable enough to spend a full day walking in, and basic enough to last several years.

Why I First Bought Frye Boots

I bought my first pair of Frye boots by accident, sort of. Before a trip to Italy, I was in the market for a pair of boots that:

Could be dressed up or down

Would be comfortable on days when I was walking long distances

Would go with several outfits

Would last a long time

I wear a lot of black and gray, so when I saw the Frye Sunny Wedge Cuff boots in red for around $100 on Overstock.com, I bought them.

And I was thrilled with what I received.

What's Great About Them

After five years of heavy wear (and a resoling), my Frye boots are still comfortable, still fashionable (I get compliments regularly), and still in good condition. As you can see in the picture below, the leather is somewhat scuffy — but I think that a good deal of that is due to user error. I didn't realize until very recently that using shoe polish wasn't just for dads.

All told, I have four pairs of Fryes — two pairs of flats (the regular Carson ballet flat and the Carson ballet flat with a cut-out pattern, pictured in the main image), my red boots, and a pair of short brown lace-up boots. The company manufactures men's and children's shoes as well, although why you'd want to pay premium prices for shoes kids are going to grow out of is beyond me.

Sole Options

You'll notice that my red boots now have a leather sole, but originally, they came with a rubber sole. Since I was living in Philadelphia at the time, where streets and sidewalks can be treacherous in the winter, I loved having a pair of fashionable boots that also had good traction. My subsequent pairs have had leather soles, which are also of good quality (and ice isn't as much of a concern now that I'm living in sunny Southern California).

Frye Offers a Two-Year Warranty and a Repair Center

One of the things I like the most about Frye is that, in my experience, the expense comes more from making a quality, long-lasting product than from charging for a designer name. This is evidenced in their focus on shoe care. New pairs come with information on how to care for your shoes, and Frye also offers a two-year warranty on new pairs sold from authorized retailers. Even if you're out of warranty, you can send your shoes in to be repaired, at reasonable cost, by their service center.

Core Styles

While Frye produces different seasonal options, they also have a core line of shoes, such as the Campus Boot. When I buy something pricey, I always like knowing that I have the option to replace it with the same thing when it wears out.

What Frye Shoes Compare To

Frye is the only upper-tier shoe company that I have tried shoes from, so I can't speak to comfort or durability of their competitors. If you are looking for another company that offers restoration services, though, Cole Haan is an option — although those services are available at a higher price than from Frye. And of course, you can always bring your shoes to an independent cobbler.

Who Frye Shoes Are Best For

If you want a pair of basic shoes that can last several years, Fryes are a great option. However, if you prefer to keep your shoes in line with current trends, Frye might not be the best company for you. Sure, they offer updated styles each year — but I wouldn't recommend spending that much money on shoes you're not going to wear in a few months because trends change. (Unless you're going to take impeccable care of them and resell them on eBay.)

How They Could Be Better

While both pairs of flats I own are pretty comfortable, I do wish that their arch support was a little bit better. Also, with one of the pairs of flats, the regular Carson ballet flat, the leather became more supple as I've worn them more. This means that the shoes are very comfortable, but also that they've stretched a bit and now occasionally flop off my feet.

Bottom Line Recommendation

If you're looking for a pair of classic shoes or boots that can be resoled and worn for several years, Frye is a great option — especially if you buy them at a discount. I find that, even for long-lasting, high-quality shoes, some of the boots are too expensive to justify purchasing if they're not on deep discount.

Where to Get Yours

There are several places to get Frye boots and shoes, including brick-and-mortar stores, directly from the company, and on Amazon. But these are my favorite retailers for discount Fryes:

Overstock

6pm.com

Click here to buy a pair today!

One thing I'll mention about 6pm. They're one of the best places to find deals on Frye shoes, but they don't allow you to do exchanges. So if you order a pair on sale, and they don't fit right, all you can do is return the shoes and order again — and often, by the time you've received your order, the sale is over. But 6pm.com does put Fryes on sale regularly — you might just have to wait a month or two. (And if you don't want to check at 6pm.com regularly to see if Fryes are on sale, we include many 6pm Frye sales in our Daily Deals newsletter; subscribe!)

I'd also recommend scanning thrift stores and yard sales for used Fryes. I know a few people who have found vintage Frye boots, had them resoled, and worn them happily for several years after.

What are your favorite boots or shoes?

This article is from Meg Favreau of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. In these tough economic times, it’s good to know that there are cheaper options out there that are still just as good as the name-brand products.

However, as important as it is to save money when you can, it’s also just as important to spend your money wisely. And that means buying products that will do what they claim to do, last a long time, and give you years of trouble-free service. Not only that, but you also want products that are safe and reliable.

That’s why I am writing an article that advises you to spend more money on certain products. That old saying “buy cheap, buy twice” isn’t always true, but sometimes, it’s bang on. Not only that, but sometimes buying cheap products with unfamiliar names could actually put you in real danger.

Here, then, are the top eight things you should always choose brand names over store brands or inferior brands. (See also: Quality Over Price: 15 Items to Spend More On)

Tools

The kind of tools you buy for home improvements can make a huge difference to the outcome of the project. There’s a reason the tradesmen you hire are all working with brand names like Makita, DeWalt, Bosch, and Milwaukee. These brands are made with strict quality controls, use excellent materials, and are built to last. It’s the reason you rarely see any of these up for sale on Craigslist — they’re just too reliable.

Of course, you can opt for the cheaper brands, like Black & Decker or Ryobi, and you’ll still get good results, but the longevity or consistency won’t be as good. When you decide to buy cheap, non-brand tools at flea markets and dollar stores, that’s when you may be throwing your money away. These cheap tools are not engineered as well and will not last as long.

Do yourself a favor — when it comes to tools, buy the brand best you can afford. Look at what the tradesmen working around the neighborhood are using, and jot it down. It might be more expensive than you dreamt of paying, but work it out. Over the course of 10-15 years, how much use will you get out of that power tool or lawn mower? And if you can’t afford a good brand, look into renting tools for the job you're doing. When it comes to DIY, you really don’t want to trust your home and garden to tools of inferior quality.

Kitchen Equipment

Again, tools of the trade need to be tools you can rely on. And in the kitchen, those tools can cost some serious money. Now, no one is suggesting you go out and spend $2,400 on an 11-piece Shun knife set, that’s probably way more knife than you’ll ever need. Professional chefs use those, but they’re cooking 12 hours a day or more.

However, it’s also not a good idea to go out and buy a cheap $29.99 knife set that features 14+ knives. At just over $2 a knife, you really will be getting garbage. Brands like J.A Henckels and Wüsthoff, that specialize in knives for the industry, also do quality knife sets under for $200.

The same principles go for any other kitchen utensils, appliances, and equipment. Get a KitchenAid mixer over something cheap and cheerful. Splurge on a good-quality blender, not one under $20. Always look at the reviews, and bear in mind that old phrase “for the price…” It means nothing really. For the price, a newspaper is a great blanket on cold winters nights. Know what I mean?

Beauty Products

Your skin, your hair, your nails, your teeth, your body — they all deserve better than the cheapest crud money can buy. So, next time you’re in the market for soap, shampoo, cosmetics (and brushes), skin creams, oils, balms, or anything else that’s going on, or in, your body, look carefully at the brands you’re buying. A nasty rash from a cream purchased at the dollar store is not going to make you feel good about the few bucks you saved. And I always thought places like MAC cosmetics were a rip off. But after seeing how long they last, and the results hey garner on my wife, I have to say, MAC is well worth it.

Electronics

I bought a pair of headphones from the dollar store once. The sound quality was appalling, and they crackled if I moved in a certain way (no doubt due to a dry soldering joint). They lasted about two days before I threw them in the trash. In the past, I’ve bought cheap cameras, personal stereos, VCRs, and all sorts of other electronic gadgets. And I have learned my lesson. If you’re going to buy headphones, spring for a good pair. Even $5 Sony headphones, despite the brand name, will not have great audio. You need to invest in good quality headphones, like BOSE, Klipsch, Velodyne, or Sennhesiner. And we're only talking $20 or $30 more for good sound. On Blu-Ray players, avoid those ones under $100. They’ll give you problems, or won't have the features you need these days. It doesn't cost a lot more to go up in quality, even those priced between $100 and $200 offer great features. If you can afford it, opt for the higher-end range of the well-known brands, like LG and Samsung, rather than their bargain-basement models. And less popular brands, like Oppo, offer excellent quality for the slightly higher price. Speaking of electronics…

Batteries

You’ll find amazing deals on batteries; even Ikea is getting in on it with AA 10-packs costing just $1.99. I guarantee, you’ll be replacing those batteries quite quickly. They will work, but they just don’t have the juice of the bigger brands like Duracell Ultra Power or Energizer Ultimate Lithium. Yes, they cost more, but they last way longer and you won’t be inconvenienced by having them run out when you need them most. (See this Wired article for a detailed analysis.)

Footwear

There’s a time and a place for cheap footwear. It’s flip-flops. That’s about it. Go ahead — get yourself a pair for a buck, and they’ll do the job. But if you really value your posture and your health, footwear is not the place to cut corners. If you’re going hiking, you need good quality hiking boots, not a $20 pair from Payless. If you’re a runner, splash out on some professional-grade running shoes. They’ll probably cost over $100, but this is your health we’re talking about. If you need work boots, pay more for quality boots with reinforced steel toe caps, support shanks, and electrical hazard protection. When you look at the cost of shoes and boots, you can usually get a very good pair for under $200. And they will last, support you in all the right places, and be beneficial to your health. Now, there are limits of course. At some point, the money you spend is not just paying for quality materials and craftsmanship, and it just goes towards a designer’s mansion. If you want to spend $38,000 on a pair of Testonis or Manolo Blahniks, go ahead. That’s just nuts if you ask me.

Sporting and Exercise Equipment

You won’t get a good game of tennis using a heavy, low-end racquet. You won’t feel the benefit of a cheap pair of ice-skates or a budget treadmill. Once again, if you’re playing a sport or trying to get fit, the non-name brands or lower-tier brands just won’t cut the mustard. You need to spend a little more on good quality brands to make your workout effective or raise your game to a significant level. Ironically, the stars earning millions of dollars get the very best equipment for free, but at the same time, using some $12.99 tennis racquet that weighs a few pounds isn’t going to make the game fun for you. Spend the money when and where you can, and you’ll get more out of it.

Camping, Hiking, and Other "Extreme" Gear

If you plan on camping in the mountains in winter, you really don’t want to rely on that $20 sleeping bag you got from Walmart. It may look the same as the $500 Marmot sleeping bag, but you’ll discover the difference when the temperature drops and you’re an ice cube shivering with regret. Your tent also needs to be good quality, and if you’re hiking, your gear needs to pass muster. If you plan on doing a little rock climbing, you don’t want to entrust your life to cheap and shoddy “knock off” brands. This is not just a bit of fun; it’s your life. So, when you’re off into the wilderness, take the biggest and best brand names your budget can afford. That advice does not come from me by the way, as I don’t camp. It comes from several of my good friends here in Colorado who do it every weekend, and they swear by their expensive brand names. They’d rather eat ramen for a week and buy a good one than entrust their lives to cheap trash.

This article is from Paul Michael of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. When it comes to spending with discretion, it's important to have priorities about things you think are worth the money, and those items or services that are not. Here are 11 things that I think are worth it.

RELATED: 11 Things Not Worth the Money

1. Insurance

We need insurance to protect us from paying even more money should the unexpected occur. At the very least, car, homeowners (along with certain incidentals like fire and earthquake), and health insurance are well worth their premiums. However, keep in mind that not all insurance policies are worth the money. Check out these seven insurance policies you can live without.

2. Culture

Excursions like visiting museums and monuments serve as entertainment and they give you a dose of culture. It's easy to get trapped in your own little world, but observing other people's accomplishments can open your eyes.

3. Going to the Doctor

Your co-pay is nothing compared to the cost of health surprises. Keep your doctor's appointments to avoid future problems and live the healthiest life possible.

You can always opt for a Flexible Spending Account where you can use pre-tax dollars to pay for your co-pay for even more savings. Remember, to use up your FSA dollars before the end of the year with these ideas!

4. Education

Consider education an investment in yourself and your career. Taking classes that can improve your sense of industry or make you think differently about the path you've chosen are worth your time and money.

Even if you're done with your student days, you can always keep on learning. Take a look at our seven suggestions for community college courses.

5. A Good Haircut

You don't have to visit the most posh salon in town to get a good haircut, but spending money on a good cut will polish your appearance and you'll save yourself from having to pay even more to get a botched cut fixed.

6. Your Well-Being

You don't necessarily need a gym membership to work out, but if it's the only thing that will get you moving, by all means join a local club. Exercise reduces stress and makes you sharper. And when you're grocery shopping, get your hands on healthy food that will keep your body working the best it can.

Here are eight more ways to improve your well-being.

7. Home Maintenance/Repair

Ignoring a problem only makes it worse down the road. When something in your home needs fixing/cleaning/maintenance, do your best to take care of it as soon as possible.

8. A Sharp Interview Outfit

As I always say, your ability to earn an income is your biggest asset. You need a quality interview outfit to make the best impression and make you feel more confident — two big factors in having a successful interview.

9. Well-Made Shoes

Saving up for a quality pair of classic, well made shoes is a smart move in my book. They'll last for years, especially if you take care of them and get them resoled when needed. Get a pair that goes with everything, and you won't need to shoe shop for quite some time.

10. Travel

Living to work is no way to live at all, so get out and see the places that interest you. There's no price you can put on memories and special experiences, but don't go into debt for the sake of worldly education. Spend and save wisely, and you'll have the means to make your dream trips happen.

Remember, there are lots of ways to save when planning for your dream trip or you can also take mini trips that are close to home.

11. Visiting Family and Friends

Buying plane tickets or filling the gas tank to visit family and friends who live far away is a necessary part of life. Those people are a part of you, and maintaining those relationships is something you can't afford to not do.

Even when you're cutting back, making room in your budget for these 11 things will help ensure a happy, healthy life.

Guest Post Blurb:

This is a guest contribution from our friends at SavvySugar. If you have a basic wardrobe with good casual and dress options, there are some simple and inexpensive ways to bump up the style of what you already own. Since most guys get lost in the details of dressing well — not understanding the proper fit, care, or pairing of clothes — just refining what’s already in your closet can make all the difference. (See also: Wardrobe Staples Every Man Should Own)

1. Pant Length

I mention pant length first because it may be the singularly greatest drag on good style today. Who decided men’s pants should compete with the Swiffer™? Pant length is not a detail that can be skipped if the waist fits right. Unless you’re the star of a reality show on the “Shore” of the East Coast, don’t let your pants drag the floor. Though there’s room for some variation for personal preference, pants are usually cut with either a full break or short break:

Full Break

The full break creates a deep horizontal crease along the front the pant and is usually reserved for taller men. With a full break, the bottom hem of the pants should land midway at shoe’s heel when you’re standing.

Short Break

With no crease in the pant leg, short break pants are best on slimmer guys. Your tailor will achieve this look by altering the bottom hem to land just above the top of the shoe.

Shortening pants is a quick and relatively inexpensive endeavor. Toss those floor dusters in a bag and head to a tailor — a fast fit-and-fix will have you looking more stylish in no time. Just remember two things: First, bring along the shoes you plan on wearing with each pair of pants you’re having altered — it will help the tailor gauge the proper length. Second, if you’re having jeans shortened, make sure your tailor will use matching-colored thread on the bottom hem so the alteration will not be obvious.

2. Blazers and Coats

For blazers, coats, and jackets, make sure you’ve got a proper fit through the shoulders and in the sleeve length. Though coats can have a bit more room, generally speaking, shoulder seams should hit right at the outer edge of the shoulder and the bottom hem of the sleeve should hit just slightly below the wrist. Again, a trip to the tailor can fix these very common issues. Even the sleeves of leather coats can be adjusted.

3. Tie Length

Ties come in two sizes — regular and extra long. Regular-sized ties are usually 54-57” long. Extra long ties are typically around 62”. Unless you’re a bigger guy and have trouble getting your necktie to hang long enough to touch the top of your belt buckle, a standard-length should work. Again, the bottom point of a properly tied tie should brush the top of your belt buckle — and tucking a tie into your waistband is never okay.

4. Socks

Maybe I travel in odd social circles, but I’m seeing more and more guys wearing white tube socks with casual and dress pants. But beyond this obvious faux-pas, what are rules for socks?

Dress shoes require dress socks. There’s just no getting around it. Those black sport socks aren’t fooling anybody either.

Match your socks to your pants, not to your shoes — it will make your legs look longer when you sit.

Novelty socks or holiday socks are great — at home.

5. Shoe Polish

What’s happened to all the shoe shine kits? Men of just a generation ago had enough cans of colored polish, mink oil, rags, and brushes that they could remake any shoe. Maybe proper shoe care has become a casualty of our disposable culture or our hyper-busy lives. Whatever the reason, let’s bring back the humble shoe shine kit. My dad would always add just a bit of water to the rag he used to shine his shoes — it helped the paste spread and be absorbed more easily. Then, he’d rub off the excess and polish vigorously with a soft-bristled horsehair brush. You’ll be amazed how a 10 minute shine can turn a bad shoe into a rad shoe.

6. Bleach

As long as we’re talking about details, remember — good style doesn’t stop at the first layer. Guys, grab a bottle of bleach (it’s cheap) and learn how to use it. Bleaching can revitalize underclothes and sports attire and keep your whites crisp and clean. Bleach should always be diluted with water (use hot water for best results) and never poured directly on clothes. A good rule of thumb is one cup bleach for every quart of water.

That’s it — GQ style without all the G’s. What are some other ways you optimize what’s already in your closet? What are the simple secrets to good style you’ve learned over the years and would like to pass along to others?

This article is from Kentin Waits of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
