In my family, the 4th of July is bigger than Christmas. My father took to his fireworks show with obsession, even joining a firework club at one point. So, I thought I would detail some amazing fireworks displays that you can see this year in the United States. Let's get started!

1. New York City

It's pretty obvious that New York City would have a large fireworks display — it's a pretty patriotic city. Their display, sponsored by Macy's, has been running since the country's bicentennial in 1976. The entire display involves several barges in the East River, and fireworks launched from the Brooklyn Bridge.

2. Boston

I love the plan for Boston's fireworks display this 4th of July. For one, it's in Boston, home of the Boston Tea Party that was an impetus for the American Revolution. The setting is an obvious plus for this show. But, I think the most amazing part of the night would be the Boston Pops orchestra, world famous for their arrangements, performing in concert with the fireworks exploding above them!

3. Washington DC

My vote for the most patriotic of displays, the fireworks in Washington are exploded over the National Mall, with the Washington Monument used as the foreground. The whole day seems fun, with a parade down Constitution Avenue a highlight of the day.

4. Atlantic City

With over 250,000 people showing up for the display each year, the Atlantic City fireworks show utilizes two barges and a platform marina. Over 1,000 fireworks shells will be fired in this 'top five' largest display in the country.

5. Addison

Dubbed "Kaboom Town," Addison's fireworks show is unique in that the whole town can tune to a radio station to listen to choreographed music to the giant display. The display has been ranked among the top five in the US, and Bing.com even rated it #11 in the world.

6. Nashville

"Music City" will feature some great entertainment along with their fireworks. And, what else would you imagine it would be? Country music stars! Billy Currington headlines this year's show along with the GRAMMY-winning Nashville Symphony.

7. San Francisco

Based around Pier 39, utilizing all the fine views that come with the San Francisco Bay, the 4th of July fireworks in the Bay Area are sure to impress. You can even rent boats to anchor offshore and watch the show from the water!

8. Las Vegas

Not particularly known for their fireworks show, Las Vegas is arguably a great place to celebrate America's birthday. The Las Vegas Strip's many mega-hotels serve as the launchpad for a highly choreographed display up and down Las Vegas Boulevard.

9. Chicago

One of my favorite cities in the United States, Chicago launches its fireworks from Navy Pier. As it's located along the shores of Lake Michigan, viewers can take fireworks cruises from downtown Chicago to check out the show.

10. San Diego

Our last city on this list, San Diego puts on the largest fireworks show in the country, with four barges scattered around San Diego Bay for viewers. The display is so large that it can be seen from Shelter Island all the way to Coronado Island. (And who can forget the spectacular fail that was 2012's show: the Big Bay Boom Bust.)

We hope this list helps you decide which ones to watch in person, and, at a minimum, which ones to watch on television!

So, where will you be this 4th of July?

This article is from Mark Jackson of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. What better way to celebrate than with some amazing displays of Chinese ingenuity and life-threatening fireworks?

Sky Lanterns

Sky lanterns originated from Pingshi, a village located in a mountainous region outisde of Taipei. According to the Government of Taiwan:

Originally inhabited by indigenous people, the region was later developed by Han settlers who were often the victims of murder and robbery during earlier times. Since access to the region was inconvenient, these pioneers came up with the idea of releasing "sky lanterns" to let others know that they were safe and sound.

Today, the lanterns are released during the Lantern Festival, the last festival of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Here's a beautifully serene scene from a recent celebration:

(link)

Another spectacular view:

(link)

Yanshuai Festival

Peaceful sky lanterns are not the only way to celebrate. In the village of Yanshuai they mount firecrackers into beehive launchers and fire straight into the crowd!

(link)

Here's a scene from the festival that is an insane blend of Terminator, 12 Monkeys, and pure awesome:

(link)

There is a method to this madness. Also according to the Government of Taiwan:

It is told that in 1875, the village of Yanshui in Tainan County was stricken with a pestilence that lasted for twenty years and nearly wiped out the town's entire population. The few survivors that remained prayed to the Goddess Kuan Yin to come to inspect the ravished land. On the day of the Lantern Festival, the town residents entreated the deity Kuan Kung and the deities of Heaven to come to earth to witness their plight, lining the route with signal fires and firecrackers to help the spirits ward off evil and rid the town of disease.

While the disease was wiped out, scalp burns rose 2000%. If you want to find out more, here's a short movie on the subject (it is in Chinese).

Eating for Prosperity

2007 is the Year of the Pig. Before you pig out during celebrations, check out these interesting superstitions that will bring you good luck for the rest of the year. According to Weekly Wire:

The foods themselves are selected mostly for their names as homonyms to prosperity, longevity, etc. Bak-choy sounds like the term for "great wealth," so a dish with bokchoy would be included. Oysters are called "Hao," which sounds like the word for "an auspicious occasion or event," and "Fu," as in tofu, sounds the same as "riches," so a tofu dish is always present.

Fish is always included, but this one gets a little weird. The Chinese word for fish is "Yu," which also means "surplus," something any family would want plenty of. The problem comes from eating your surplus, leaving the family with nothing. Often a spoiled fish is cooked in a spectacular fashion, as a showpiece only, not meant to be eaten.

Sometimes a fish carved from wood is sauced to represent the fish course. Only if the host first breaks the fish into small pieces in front of them should guests ever eat the fish (or in the case of Yu Sheng -- Chinese New Year Salad -- where all the guests simultaneously toss the fish within the salad).

If you want to celebrate without throwing a feast, check out Andrea's recipe for braised lettuce. Happy Chinese New Years!

This article is from Will Chen of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
