Why? I think having unstructured time and wanting to do things with my family makes it easy to go off the rails of my budget. (See also: 40+ Cheap or Free Ways to Make the Most of the Weekend)

Here are some of the worst weekend money traps — and how to avoid them.

1. The Movie Theater

Even if there is nothing great to watch, people like going to the movies to have something to do for a few hours. This can be especially tempting if you have lots of time on your hands and your family is bored. But the cost of movie tickets plus popcorn and other expensive snacks will quickly deplete the funds you work so hard during the week to earn.

How to avoid: Watch a movie at home via streaming or rent from Redbox instead of going to the movie theater.

2. The Car Lot

A weekend activity that seems like free entertainment is going to the car lot just to look. The problem is, looking is how the car buying cycle starts. You see newer, nicer cars than the car you have with cool new features and this gets you to start thinking about upgrading. You could even get talked into taking a test drive with a skilled salesperson and end up buying a car that you weren't planning to buy, resulting in thousands of dollars of unplanned spending.

How to avoid: Wait until you are ready to buy a car and set a budget to go car shopping. And instead of looking at cars, spend some time working on the car you already have. Wash it, vacuum it, check the air pressure in the tires, check the fluid levels, and even change the oil and oil filter if you are mechanically inclined.

3. The Mall

I fell into this weekend money trap last weekend. I wanted to take the family for a walk in the mall since it was hot and humid outside. By the time we headed home, I was carrying a bag filled with video games that erased most of the money I earned working on Friday.

How to avoid: Go grocery shopping instead of shopping at a mall or sporting goods store. You can have a shopping experience, but you will be buying things you need. Plus, having a fresh supply of groceries to kick off the weekend can help you avoid another money trap — dining out.

4. Restaurants

With all of the free time that people have on weekends, there are many opportunities to go out to eat. It's easy to spend $10 per person for breakfast or lunch, or $15 per person for dinner. You could easily buy enough groceries to last all weekend and then some for the cost of going out to eat just once.

How to avoid: Have a plan for what meals you will make at home Saturday and Sunday, and try not to be out and about at mealtime, or on an empty stomach.

5. Open Houses

Another example of a weekend activity that seems like free entertainment is to go look at houses for sale. Chances are, you won't be inspired to run out and buy a house. But you might get ideas for upgrades and expensive projects for your current house that you didn't even know you needed until you checked out new house.

How to avoid: Don't go house shopping unless you need to move.

6. The Furniture Store

Furniture stores make it so easy to buy furniture. If you don't have money or credit, this is not a problem — you can get store credit on the spot. If the furniture won't fit in your vehicle, you can get free delivery. If you don't like the color of the floor model, you can order whatever color you like. Also, it seems like the furniture store is always having some sort of major sale to make you feel like you should buy now to get the best price. But do you really want to spend a month's salary on a new couch?

How to avoid: If you need furniture, check out used furniture at a consignment shop, thrift shop, and Craigslist instead of looking at new furniture. Used furniture can cost 90% less than new furniture.

7. Big Ticket Events

Every few years, my wife gets me tickets to go to a college football game. It's incredible how expensive it is to go to a big event like this! The tickets are expensive. The food and refreshments are expensive. Even getting to the stadium is expensive — you can pay to park near the stadium, or you can park for free and pay for transportation from the parking area to the stadium. And there are lots of opportunities to buy jerseys, posters, footballs, and other souvenirs. In addition to college or professional sports, other expensive weekend events include rock concerts and theater productions.

How to avoid: I try to go to big events only a few times a year, at the most. It's a lot cheaper to catch the big game or other events on TV at home, and you get a better view of the action as well.

8. The Weekend Roadtrip

Taking a road trip can be an expensive way to spend the weekend. It costs about $5 per hour to cruise down the highway in a car, just for gas. The cost of gas and wear and tear on your vehicle is often just the beginning. You'll likely eat most or all of your meals at gas station convenience stores or fast food places while you are on the road, taking a toll on both your bank account and your waistline. If you are on an overnight trip, a hotel stay can easily cost $75 or more.

How to avoid: Take a fuel efficient vehicle, bring food from home with you, and stay with friends or family instead of staying at a hotel to reduce the cost of taking a road trip.

What are your weekend money traps? However, not many jobs offer the same summer break perks, leaving you with the costly decision of finding summer child care.

Here are some solutions to try to save money on your child care costs this summer.

Swap With Someone Who Has a Summer Break

If one of your friends is a teacher or school administrator, then they probably have a good portion of the summer off. Ask a teacher or a stay-at-home mom friend who is willing to watch your children for a few hours a week in exchange for you watching their kids on the weekend. Since many teachers and stay-at-home moms will have to stay home with their children during the weekdays, they might enjoy a weekend break.

Just make sure that the agreement is benefiting both of you, instead of being a burden on one of you. One summer, my mom asked my neighbor to watch my sister and I. The neighbor had six children that stayed at home as is, so my sister and I were barely noticed. We had a blast hanging out with our friends, and the mom just kept her schedule as she always did. We even did chores and went to local home schooling conventions.

In exchange, my mom was able to give her money each week, and it ended up benefiting us all. The neighbor made a little bit of extra money, my mom paid less for child care, than she would have if she sent us to day camp, and my sister and I had a blast.

Try Working a Flex Schedule

Many times your employer can be more understanding of your need for a flexible schedule during the summer months. Try to work it out with your spouse's schedule so that there will always be someone available to stay home. For example, your spouse can go into work earlier and come home earlier, while you can go in later and work later hours. Perhaps you can even work the weekends so that you have two free days to watch your children during the week.

I have witnessed many couples do this successfully, and work it out so that their schedules overlap the majority of the time. You can then fill in the gaps with the use of a family member or a baby sitter. While this schedule will take planning and getting used to, remember it is only for a few months.

Of course, many people do not have flexible jobs, but it is worth looking into. Even if you can work from home one day a week or come in two hours later, that is time you do not have to pay for child care.

Look for a Tax Break

Take a look at your benefits to see if you have access to a dependent care flexible spending account. If so, you can use up to $5,000 in pre tax dollars to pay for child care expenses.

If your employer doesn't offer an FSA, you can claim the child care tax credit when you file taxes. This credit is good for $3,000 to $6,000 in expenses, depending on how many children you have.

Get the Most Out of Your Babysitter

A baby sitter might be a better deal for the summer, especially if you have more than one child. Be sure to do a background check and to find a sitter that will keep your kids engaged each day rather than parking them in front of the television.

When you are going through the hiring process, specify certain tasks/jobs you want done. Obviously it would be unfair to request they deep clean your home, but if they can manage light cleaning, simple dinner prep, grocery shopping, or the kids' laundry, that will take the stress off your shoulders. (See also: 9 Child Care Purchases You Should Never Skimp On)

Look Into Camp Scholarships

Ann Sheets, former national president of the American Camp Association said, "About 90% of resident camps and 89% of day camps offer scholarships."

Start your search today and apply to any camp you think your child would be eligible for. Don't forget to apply for higher-end camps too, since their scholarships might cover more than you think. Try to stay flexible with your camp dates. Not sure if a camp offers a scholarship? Just contact them and ask. You might have a better chance at qualifying for a scholarship if not many people know about it.

While kids live for summer vacation, it can be hard to deal with the costs. Most professionals will admit that their kids' summer plans look like a mismatched quilt. That is okay! Be creative and stay flexible, knowing that this is only a brief season.

What are your child care plans for the summer?

This article is from Ashley Eneriz of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. It takes a full-sized calendar to keep track of who has soccer on which day, and which kid has an upcoming dance recital. If your family juggles a lot of activities during the school year and then in the summer, you know how expensive it can get. Here are few ways to save money.

Buy Secondhand

Gently used sports equipment is surprisingly easy to find secondhand. Before you spring for new sports gear or a musical instrument, check Craigslist, eBay, thrift stores, and even your parent friends. Children often outgrow gear quickly, or they lose interest in an activity. This means you might find equipment such as cleats, shin guards, dance shoes, or a French horn in mint condition for a fraction of the cost.

My daughter is in ballet/tap class, and I am surprised at how many pairs of tap shoes I come across at the thrift store for about $1.99 each. Avoid getting any headgear used, especially bicycle helmets, for safety reasons. Also, if your child or teen is involved in a sport that requires a lot of running, new shoes will be better for their alignment and performance. (See also: 8 Things You Should Always Buy Used)

Skip the Pricey, Special Events

Certain activities will come with seasonal recitals, concerts, fundraisers, and fancy dinners. When you sign up for an activity, know upfront which events are required of you. You are not always required to participate in everything. For example, my daughter's dance studio puts on five or so performances a year, each of which might cost $30–$40 for the costume and tickets to attend. Since she is only three, it is easy to opt out of these performances. The other dance moms are a little perplexed that I would do such a thing, but my main goal is to make sure my daughter has fun and to keep my life simple with two kids under four.

As a child, my sister and I were in Taekwondo. There were always tournaments happening, and I remember wanting to go to as many as possible. Thankfully, my parents limited tournaments because, truthfully, as much as I loved doing them, they drained a lot of my time and energy (and my parents', too). When you sign up for a new activity, find out what is really required of you. If your child is still young, like mine, then feel free to forego the optional extras to save money and sanity.

Enroll in One Activity at a Time

I'm always amazed by the parents that juggle two or three or even five different activities with their children. Amazingly, I've never met a parent who actually enjoys being a human taxi to taekwondo lessons, piano lessons, and baseball games. These parents are usually the ones who are stressed out the most or are barking at their kids to hurry up and get ready for the next activity. Guess what? Your kids don't have to do it all. Pick one activity per season. If you have multiple kids have them all enrolled in one activity. If your youngest doesn't want to take soccer with the rest of your kids, then let them know that they will get to choose the activity next season.

I think as parents, we are so worried about enriching our children's lives, that we forget they need some downtime and relaxation time with us. It's okay to take a season off of youth soccer. This doesn't mean your child is automatically disqualified from future scholarships or from becoming a pro-athlete (unless of course they are close to graduation).

Get the Sibling Discount

Not only will enrolling your children in the same activity save you some time and stress, but it will also save you money. Many places offer sibling discounts, and siblings can often share equipment. If you don't see a sibling discount offered, don't hesitate to ask.

Start a Hand-Me-Down Bucket

When I first signed up my daughter for dance classes, the teacher asked all the moms if someone had outgrown ballet shoes for us. The next week, another mom brought some for me. I offered her money, but she said, "This is just what the moms do at this studio." What a resourceful way to help the whole studio.

If possible, make an announcement to the parents that you are going to start a "hand-me down bucket" or "share bucket." Pitch it as a way for them to help with the costs and to clean out their closets of outgrown gear. This works best in settings that kids use the same items each year, such as dance shoes, leotards, karate shirts, and sparring gear, etc.

Pay Ahead

Always ask about discounts for paying ahead or paying in cash. Some places might give you a discount for paying for the whole year upfront, which can save you $30–$50 that year. The dance studio my daughter is enrolled in offers a $15 discount once a year for those who pay for three months in advance.

How do you save on your kid's extracurricular activities? That's a lot of time staring at a box, right?

Well, instead of straining your eyes and allowing your brain to transform into mush, maybe it's time for a new hobby. Here are a bunch more cool hobbies you can start today for free! (Related: 10 Fun Hobbies You Can Take Up for Free)

1. Cooking or Baking

Learning to make better dinners or desserts doesn't have to cost anything outside of your normal grocery budget. There are millions of recipes you can access for free online. To make sure you have the right ingredients and don't go over budget, try meal planning. All you have to do is find recipes that look good, write down what you'll need, and head to the store. You might not be able to make something special every night of the week, so start by cooking on a weekend when you might usually go out.

2. Nature Identification

Take out some books from your local library on nature identification. You can focus on birds, plants, insects, stars, or whatever else interests you most. Then step into your backyard and take a look around. I used to collect leaves so I could figure out the exact type of trees that we had growing in our neighborhood. Now that my daughter is older, she can join me on the adventure.

3. Weather Reporting

Are you always watching the precipitation or other weather events in your area? Your local branch of the National Weather Service likely runs free training sessions on how to become a weather spotter through the SKYWARN volunteer program. After you've taken the class, you'll work to identify and describe severe weather in your area and report back to your local station.

4. Drawing

I've never been good at art, so I was delighted to find Draw Space. This corner of the web offers free tutorials and instruction on drawing and other art for beginners all the way to advanced artists. Focus on contours, shading, composition, or any other area that interests you.

5. Photography

Yes! You can take up photography for free, provided you have an iPhone (or other cell phone with camera capabilities). And though you might not believe me, you can shoot DSLR-quality photos with your phone and a little knowledge. The iPhone Photography School has a number of tutorials on everything from "making the most of light" to photo editing.

6. Whittling

Whittling is a relaxing craft that also happens to be free if you have an old pocket knife. According to The Art of Manliness, softwoods work best (you can find basswood, pine, and others at your local craft shop), but backyard twigs work just as well. Make sure your knife is sharp, learn the basic cuts, and get creative. Your library might have books with ideas for projects.

7. Vlogging

If you're not into writing or blogging, considering heading over to YouTube and starting your own vlog. Creating an account is free and — if you get popular — you may even make some money on the side if you link up your channel to Adsense. You can take videos and upload them in no time using your cell phone. What you talk about is up to you, so long as you follow the community guidelines.

8. Dancing

Could your moves use some work? Check out Club Dance Lessons for free videos on hip-hop, electronic, salsa, and all other types of dance. Whether you're looking for twerking lessons, dance seduction moves, or freestyle grooves, you're covered. Plus, dancing is great exercise if you hate going to the gym.

9. Couponing

I still haven't gotten into coupons, but some of my friends swear this ever-popular hobby saves them tons of cash. You'll likely want to get the Sunday paper, and scour the web for digital deals, but the savings you'll see is most usually worth the few dollars you'll spend. Meditating

Sure, your body might be fit and active, but what about your mind? Try meditating to relieve stress, lower blood pressure, improve circulation, and more. Gaiam offers a wonderful (and free!) start-up guide for How to Meditate. Start by sitting and closing your eyes. Breathe naturally. Focus your attention on your breath and work up to concentrating in this way for two to three minutes. From there, work your way to longer periods of time.

Did we miss any cool free hobbies? I'm not one for big gatherings, competitive sports, or taking weekly classes filled with people I don't know. If you're introverted too, or know someone who is, this list of eight hobbies is well worth checking out.

1. Take Up Origami

Origami kits, which include starter paper, can be bought very inexpensively on Amazon or from your local discount bookstore. You can also find thousands of patterns online, and YouTube is filled with instructional videos that take you step-by-step through the process. Put on a little relaxing music (or head-banging rock, if that's your thing), and enjoy a hobby that relieves stress and results in some wonderful paper sculptures.

2. Make YouTube Videos

While being a famous celebrity may not be ideal for an introvert, becoming a YouTube personality might be. These days, all you need is a webcam, some very basic video editing software, and…an original take on an idea! If it becomes big enough, you can do your hobby full time, and make millions. Yes, millions. Here's a list of the biggest YouTube stars, and as you can see, they do pretty well for themselves — and it all started by doing something they love, at home. If you don't like to be on camera, consider unboxing videos, or even gaming videos. Do it well, and you can retire!

3. Learn Magic

You don't have to become a magician to learn magic, and you don't have to go big when you first start out. In fact, all you really need is a deck of cards, and access to YouTube or any other site you find that hosts free magic lessons. Once you master sleight of hand, you can move on to bigger tricks. It can take months, or even years, to get a trick right. But the satisfaction you get when you finally nail that first trick is well worth it. Master a few of these, and you'll always have something to do at parties besides feeling awkward!

4. Play an Instrument

With access to free lessons online, and resources like Craigslist and Facebook for private, one-on-one tutoring, it has never been easier to learn to play an instrument. Your library is also a great resource for these kinds of books and videos, and it's free. If you can't afford to buy the instrument you want immediately (for instance, not many of us have a piano), you can find alternatives. Perhaps start with an inexpensive keyboard (some instruments are even available for rent). And there's always eBay!

5. Write

Some people blog as a hobby, and have thousands of followers. Others write screenplays for TV and the movies (and if you get good at it, it could launch a new career). Stephen King's book On Writing – A Memoir of a Craft is an excellent place to start if you've never written anything before. They also say everyone has one novel in them, so why not try coaxing yours out?

6. Photography

As a professional photographer, you need excellent social and people skills to do your job. But as a hobby, photography is perfect for introverts. These days, everything is digital, and you can find some good quality digital SLR cameras on eBay. If you prefer, you can go the old fashioned route and try film cameras (although getting a hold of film is nowhere near as easy at it used to be). Whichever way you try, keep a blog or online gallery of your favorite photos, and share them with the world.

7. Learn a Language

Or several languages. You can find many of the tuition books and videos you need online for free, or a small price. Rosetta Stone gets rave reviews, but has a higher upfront cost of several hundred dollars. With the Internet, you can also watch foreign language TV and movies, and even engage in chat rooms, anonymously if you wish, to hone your skills.

8. Build Movie Prop Replicas

I've made everything from a Bane vest to an Iron Man arc reactor. My latest two props are from Ghostbusters — a proton pack and a ghost trap. Everything you need to build movie props, like these, can be found in hardware stores, thrift stores, and on eBay. You don't have to spend a lot; for example, all of the parts used in my ghost trap came to less than $40. Instructions for almost any prop you want to build can be downloaded from a fan site. You can use them to Cosplay, to dress up at Halloween, and to decorate your house or office.

Are you an introvert with an interesting or unusual hobby? But there's not a whole lot of time left to enjoy this magical and fleeting season, so here are some ideas to help create your ultimate autumn bucket list. (And we'd love to hear what's on your list in the comments!)

1. Get Lost in a Corn Maze

Gather a group of friends and spend time together navigating a corn maze. You can find corn mazes near you on sites like Corn Mazes America. Most mazes vary in difficulty. Some even have different instructions to cater the experience for different ages and skill levels.

2. Make Applesauce

Go apple-picking and simmer together homemade applesauce. It's as easy and chopping apples into small chunks. (You can leave the peels on or take them off.) Place them in the pot of your slow cooker, sprinkle on a couple teaspoons of cinnamon and a couple tablespoons of sugar, and cook on high for three hours. When the apples have softened, mash them with a potato masher or blend with a food processor.

3. Paint Pretty Pumpkins

Pick up a few pumpkins from the farmers market and decorate. You can go with classic carving, but for a safer project — try paint. I've seen anything from faces to letters to doughnuts painted on pumpkins. Use glitter, glow-in-the-dark paint, and all sorts of other crafting supplies to make yours unique.

4. Drink Cider

Drink hot cider. Enough said. All it takes is a few minutes to warm on the stove or in the microwave. As the weather gets colder, you can transition to hot cocoa or even add some mulling spices to the mix.

5. Take a Hike

Even if you're not into the great outdoors, now's the time to get out there before the cold weather hits. Hike a local trail or simply bask in the glow of the turning leaves in your neighborhood. This year I gave my daughter a "nature box," which is just a shoebox we fill with acorns, leaves, pine cones, and anything else that makes her think of fall.

6. Decorate Your Place

Bring some of the outdoors inside by decorating your place. Even a modest wreath can bring you joy and spiff up your entryway. Here are seven frugal fall decorating tips that will transform your space in no time. My favorite? Making a "stained-glass" window from fallen leaves and contact paper.

7. Light a Bonfire

We look forward to chilly nights and lighting backyard bonfires in our fire pit. Check with your city or town for different rules and regulations — not all areas permit open flames. Once you've been given the all clear, you can pick one up at your local hardware store or build a fire pit for year-round enjoyment. You'll need pavers, lava rocks, a shovel, a level, and about an hour of time.

8. Brew Something New

Host an outdoor brewing party. Make it all about fall by brewing pumpkin beer. You'll want to start with a recipe that isn't terribly hoppy. From there, add canned pumpkin (about one pound per five gallons of beer) with no added preservatives and a variety of warm spices like nutmeg, allspice, and ginger. Let it all ferment like usual before enjoying.

9. Get Dressed

If you're in need of some new cold-weather clothing, head to the thrift shop or sale rack before buying new. A puffy vest or fleece jacket is a solid addition to your fall wardrobe and will get good use throughout winter as well. While you're at it, make the big transition from your summer wardrobe to your fall clothes.

10. Go Camping

Camping is a blast this time of year. Yes, it's chilly. Yes, it requires a bit more preparation. But there's something amazing about waking up in the crisp air with the crunchy leaves beneath my feet. Don't have much time (or vacation days) to set aside an adventure? Try camping in your backyard, cooking out, and unplugging for a single night. The kids will love it.

11. Clean Up

Before the weather gets frightful, try sprucing up your place by cleaning out junk drawers, donating unused clothes and other items, and taking care of some basic home maintenance. Get your chimney cleaned before you start burning new fires. Reorganize your pantry to make mealtime a breeze. And flip your mattress. (See also: Fall Cleaning 101)

12. Roast Everything

Fall is the season for squash and lots of other hearty produce items. If you don't know exactly what to do with them, try roasting. To roast butternut squash, start by preheating your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Then cut the squash lengthwise, scoop out the seeds, peel, and cut into cubes. Place chunks on a rimmed baking sheet, toss in olive oil, salt, and pepper, and bake for 30 minutes.

13. Volunteer Somewhere

Give back to your community. Work in a soup kitchen. Donate to a food bank. Help someone learn to read. And get the whole family involved if you can. Use a site like VolunteerMatch.org to find opportunities in your area.

14. Enjoy a Hayride

While you're out at the farm picking apples or working your way through a maze, don't forget to take a hayride. You might even catch some spooky ones around Halloween. Some tips: If you're allergic to grass or hay, consider taking allergy medicine beforehand. And don't wear your fanciest clothing — you will likely get a bit dirty!

15. Eat a Doughnut

I'm addicted to apple cider doughnuts. I started making them at home to save a bit of cash. These baked apple cider doughnuts are even a bit healthier than the fried variety. Combine all the ingredients, including a hefty 1/3 cup of apple cider and spices. Bake in a doughnut pan. Then eat them plain or top with cinnamon and sugar.

16. Attend a Festival

Browse your local paper or bulletin boards for fall festivals taking place in your hometown. My area boasts three apple festivals, a chili festival, a jazz music festival, and more fun things to do. The best part? A lot of the entertainment is free.

17. DIY a Blanket

Make yourself a no-sew fleece blanket for some extra warmth. This project is so simple and would make a fun gift. You need four yards of fleece, scissors, and your hands (for knotting). To save a few dollars, shop around online for your fleece or check your store's clearance bins for discounted prints and colors.

18. Create a Thankful Tree

Thinking ahead to Thanksgiving, I adore this thankful tree. Gather some twigs and assemble them in a vase. Then write things you and your family are thankful for on tags and tie them to the tree. You can display it in a prominent area of your home and keep the good vibes flowing all season long.

What memories are you making this fall?

This article is from Ashley Marcin of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Take a look at these reasons autumn is good for you, and let me know how you take advantage of the crisper weather in the comments below.

1. Relief From Allergies

Say so long to all that sneezing and wheezing you do during the spring and summer months as those cool fall breezes help clear the air.

"Autumn is good in a sense that it gives relief from atopy, seasonal allergies and pollen-induced allergic reactions," says internal medicine specialist Dr. Muhammad M. Hanif. "Exercise-induced allergy is also relieved in a considerable number of patients. Asthmatics also get relief in this season as there is a considerable decrease in grass, flowers, and tree pollens, and it makes the airways least irritated and triggered."

2. Warm Days Are Perfect for Exercising

The beginning of autumn is still relatively warm in most of the U.S., which is a great time to sneak in a little more summer or outdoor exercise. Consider alternative ways of working out, such as integrating movement into your TV-watching schedule on inside days, to prevent falling into a sedentary lifestyle that we're prone to later in the year.

3. More Laid-Back Outdoor Activities

There are an even greater number of outdoor activities that you can do in the fall that can be prohibited by the extreme heat during the summer. Hiking, biking, and kayaking, for example, are great ways to get out, stay active, but perform at your own pace.

4. An Abundance of Healthy Produce

The colder it gets later in the fall, the more you'll crave comfort food — which is just one of the many reasons why you should indulge in all the exciting and uber-healthy fruits and vegetables produced from the autumn harvest. Apples, pears, peaches, and pumpkin are just for starters.

Not only is your locally grown produce packed full of vitamins and nutrients, but you're also reducing your carbon footprint by purchasing items that don't have to be transported long distances and supporting your local economy, of course.

And just so we're clear, pumpkin spice is not in this category.

5. The Switch to Standard Time Can Encourage Better Sleep Habits

Besides getting an extra hour of sleep if you go to bed early enough on the "fall back" switchover, there are other ways you can take advantage of the switch.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends using this time to reset your sleep habits by going to sleep and waking the same time every day, using bright light to help manage your "body clock," selecting a relaxing bedtime ritual, and more. If you have trouble adjusting to the change — and you're not alone; millions of people have the same problem — perhaps these tips from BetterSleep.org for surviving Daylight Saving Time will help you survive Standard Time, too.

6. We Get Back to Our Regular Routines

As someone who lives by the beach, I can attest to the difficulty of maintaining a routine during the summer. But thanks to the school system in the United States, which typically runs from September to June, we have structure already in place to help us get back on track. It's certainly not as fun as frolicking in the sand all day, but having a routine is scientifically proven to make us happier and healthier by providing a sense of security and other factors.

Do you have more reasons why autumn is good for you? We're a bit different, and we enjoy doing different things. Here are 12 of the best weekend activities for people that don't necessarily want to party. Wonderful wallflowers, unite!

1. Reading a Good Book

What could be better than getting lost in the pages of a good book (you know… the sort that you hate to put down and can't wait to pick up again)? Books are a refuge for many introverts. It makes us curiously reflective, notoriously well-read, and (once you get to know us), wonderful conversationalists. Find a good story and immerse yourself in it.

2. Playing Board Games

Introvert or extrovert, a little harmless competition has universal appeal. Skip charades and arrange an evening of great card and board games with a small group of friends.

3. Curating a Collection

Curating a personal collection of something you love can become a wonderful obsession. Over the years, I've collected mid-century Italian pottery, postage stamps, coins, vintage postcards, and (oddly) antique syrup dispensers. A weekend spent researching, hunting, buying, and displaying items in your collection is a great way to meet folks one-on-one who share your interests.

4. Talking Aimlessly Over Coffee

One of my favorite writers, the late Paul Monette, penned the following line in his autobiography: "I felt as if I had been born to talk in restaurants." That quote has always stuck with me, especially when I'm in the company of a dear friend and we're thoroughly unplugged and lost in coffee-fueled conversation. Introvert or extrovert, it's one of life's simplest pleasures.

5. Exploring a New Hobby

I pass countless weekend hours immersed in wood carving, assemblage art, and antique restoration. Each is solitary, alternately challenging and relaxing, and wonderfully rewarding. Indulge a new interest, pursue a free and fun hobby, and go!

6. Watching a Classic Movie

If you're like me, a crowded theater, 40-foot screen, $8.00 popcorn, and texting teenagers hold little appeal. Choose the more intimate (and frugal!) option. Stay in and watch a movie with friends.

7. Going for a Long Walk

There are many reasons to take a walk; long, leisurely walks outdoors can be restorative and energizing — the perfect antidote for a trying week at work. Tune the world out by creating a personal playlist, then (safely) hit the streets.

8. Having a Drink With a Small Circle of Friends

Introverts often get accused of being antisocial, but nothing could be further from the truth. We're just choosy about the context and the company. Pick a local watering hole that's off the beaten path, become a familiar face there, and make it your go-to spot for drinks with friends.

9. Gardening

Gardening is a solitary activity with tremendous rewards. Communing with nature, growing edible garden plants, and enjoying the delicious fruits of your labor all make gardening the perfect solo pursuit.

10. Cooking With Friends

Everybody's gotta eat, right? Invite a couple of your closest friends over, hit the local market, and spend some quality kitchen time together. And if cooking isn't exactly your passion, explore quick dinner ideas for lazy cooks. Just imagine: healthier meals with no parking hassles, no big dinner bills, and no obnoxious birthday songs at the next table.

11. Solving a Crossword Puzzle

Next to a good game of solitaire, crosswords are the cliché activity for introverts, and there's a reason for it. A challenging crossword puzzle can be wonderful, maddening, exhausting and — when you finally finish — exhilarating.

12. Attending a (Small) Yoga Class

Though yoga classes are a group activity, the vibe is decidedly different. People focus on their bodies, on their breathing, and on the experience. It's physical, mental, and entirely independent. Attend a beginner's class one weekend, gently push your physical limits, and practice at home.

There's no need to grit our teeth through dinner parties full of strangers, loud bars, and crowded gyms. Let's celebrate who we are by doing exactly what we love and pursuing activities as individual as we are.

Are you a self-described introvert? What are some of your favorite weekend activities?

This article is from Kentin Waits of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. However, with so many great outdoor options available, there is no reason that you should have to spend any extra money during the season. That's why we've found some of the best ways to enjoy your summer, without spending a dime.

1. Explore Your Neighborhood

The weather and time of year is perfect to explore your neighborhood so you know exactly what it has to offer. There may even be free walking tours of your city, so check your city's event calendar. Whenever you're exploring the great outdoors, don't forget to slather on the sunscreen to protect your skin and face from sun damage.

2. Look for Free Events

Museums and art galleries tend to offer free tickets on certain days of the summer, so check your community calendar to see if they will be hosting any free events. You may even be able to find a free comedy show or open mic night near you for endless free entertainment.

3. Look for Free Factory Tours

Many restaurants, toy stores, breweries, candy factories, and other factories will offer free tours, so find out what's available in your area. This can be a fun, educational experience for the whole family.

4. Get Creative

Maybe you have an inner artist or writer in you? There's no better time than now to explore your creative side. Find paper, pens, colored pencils, and whatever else you may have around the house to draw, paint, sculpt, write, and let your creative juices flow. This may also be the perfect time to explore photography and discover what types of photos you can master. Give yourself a photography challenge every day to improve your skills in no time.

5. Take Advantage of Outdoor Activities

If you live near a park, check their upcoming events calendar to find out which free events will be available to you. There may be free food festivals, film festivals, concerts, plays, and other events at your local park or nearby. You can also visit any of the 400+ national parks, many with free admission days.

6. Go to the Beach

Going to the beach is one of the best free activities. You can enjoy all the beach activities, the sun, and the endless people watching, all without spending anything.

7. Get Sporty

Outdoor activities like camping, hiking, volleyball, fishing, biking, boating, surfing, swimming, gardening, and other outdoor sports are all great ways to spend your summer days and won't cost anything. As an added benefit, you can also lose weight and tone your body, all while having fun outside.

8. Host a Party

If you've never hosted a party, summer is the perfect time to practice before the holidays roll around. Plan an outdoor barbeque, a pool party, or an indoor gathering to beat the heat.

9. Host a Clothing Swap

A clothing swap is a great way to clean out your closet, add items to your wardrobe, and bond with your favorite people. You can trade unwanted clothing with your friends and family, and can even throw in a potluck where everyone can bring one of their favorite recipes.

10. Relax With a Good Book

Just because you don't need to worry about studying and homework over the summer doesn't mean you can't enjoy a good book. Spend some time working on your tan while reading a new bestseller. This is the best way to relax and expand your mind at the same time. Visit your local library to rent books, ebooks, audiobooks, and DVDs. Your library may also offer free events that you can take part in, so make sure to check their upcoming calendar.

11. Improve Your Cooking Skills

If you've wanted to master the art of the perfect burger, then there's no better time to hone in on your cooking skills than now. Learn to make homemade ice cream and you'll have the most visited house on the block all summer.

12. Take up a New Hobby

Experiment with new hobbies or perfect your talents. Take up an instrument, learn a new language, or train your body to complete a marathon.

13. Work on Your Fitness

Now is also a great time to get into shape. If you aren't in beach body shape yet, it's never too late. By working up a sweat, you'll look better, feel better, and help release harmful toxins from the body.

14. Volunteer

Volunteering your time can be very rewarding, help others, and provide a fun experience. You can also meet new people and feel good knowing that you helped contribute to your community. You can even think outside of the box and do things like cleaning up trash at your local park. Not only will it help your community, but it can also provide a great example for your children.

15. Pamper Yourself

What better way to relax on a hot day than by giving yourself an at-home spa day? You can enjoy a mask, manicure, pedicure, and whatever else you find relaxing, without paying someone else to do it for you. You can even ask your spouse to give you a massage to complete your relaxing day. You can also just relax in a hot bath, jacuzzi, or pool. Whatever it takes to leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed, you deserve to be pampered. No problem. There are plenty of frugal things you can do to have the best summer ever — some of which are right out your back door. Check out this bucket list for some ideas. And feel free to add your own in the comments. (See also: 20 Essential Life Hacks of Summer)

1. Hike a Trail

Head to a county, state, or national park and hike a trail for the day. Most parks have inexpensive or free parking. You can find a path before you head out and choose the length and difficulty. Just remember to bring water, fuel, and wear layers for comfort.

2. Pack a Picnic

Have dinner outdoors tonight at a park down the street (or in your own backyard). You don't need any special ingredients to make a great meal to eat al fresco. Bring that bottle of wine you've been saving and some candles to set the mood. (See also: From $5 to $30+, Date Ideas for Every Budget)

3. Visit a Local Festival

There are numerous festivals around our relatively small area throughout the summer. The best part? Most of them have a bunch of free or cheap stuff to do. Think of all the great food and fun you could enjoy at a Strawberry Fest, Greek Fest, or Italian Fest. Just find out when they're happening and go.

4. Go Camping

If renting a hotel room isn't in the budget, try camping when you reach your next destination. Most campgrounds, like KOA, offer a variety of lodging options from tent sites to cabins. Pack your own food for even more savings.

5. Take a Road Trip

When I hear "road trip," I often think of driving all the way across the country. But if you don't have the time or cash, you can still enjoy the experience on a smaller scale. Choose a destination just a few hours away and stop at points along the route to stretch your legs, sample cuisine, and see the sights.

6. Try Geocaching

Sort of like hiking mixed with a treasure hunt, geocaching can take you to some pretty beautiful places. With two million spots worldwide, there's likely one near you now. Just arm yourself with a GPS-enabled device (a smartphone will do), hike the coordinates, and find the cache. I just discovered one down the street!

7. Host a Yard Sale

Try making some money for your summer activities. You might be surprised how much your old junk can earn you. Don't know where to start? Follow these nine easy steps for the best garage sale ever. Remember: Presentation is everything. (See also: 6 Old Things in Your House That Have Serious Re-Sale Value)

8. Park at a Drive-In

Search for drive-in theaters in your area. Don't see anything near your home? Consider renting or borrowing a projector and showing a movie in your backyard. You can shoot it onto a white sheet or tarp and use computer speakers for audio.

9. Ride a Bike

Dust off your bike and take a ride around the neighborhood. Who knows, you might even find a new exercise you like for those particularly hot days. If you haven't hopped on your bike in a few years, be sure to check the tires, chains, and brakes. A tune-up is cheap and definitely the safe way to go.

10. Enjoy a Stay-Cation

Can't afford a fancy vacation this summer? No worries. Cash in some of your well-earned days off and stay home. You can give yourself a DIY spa treatment, take in a matinee, or just lounge on your back patio. Time away from work is refreshing no matter how you spend it.

11. Seek Out Fireworks

July 4th isn't the only time you'll see a brilliant lights show during the summer. Check your local calendar to discover other fireworks displays at festivals, baseball games, or other events. Then pack your blanket, lay back, and enjoy.

12. Organize a Potluck BBQ

If you'd like to have friends over but are worried about the cost, try organizing a potluck barbecue where everyone brings a dish to pass. Planning a theme can help guests narrow their menu choices. Otherwise, just make sure you supply the plates, cups, napkins, and cutlery. (See also: Throw an Awesome Potluck With These 6 Easy Tricks)

13. Swim the Neighborhood

Many cities and towns across the country have community pools with low entry prices. Our neighborhood pool is even free for children under the age of five. Be sure to call ahead to check for season rates/passes if you'd like to go often.

14. Make Ice Cream

One of my favorite summer activities is getting ice cream at the shop down the street. It can get expensive night after night, so we've started making our own. You don't always need a fancy ice cream maker either. (Related: The Sweet 16: Delicious and Healthy Frozen Yogurt and Ice Cream Recipes)

15. Have a Water Fight

Whether you're with family or friends, a hot day calls for water guns, balloons, sprinklers, and more. Slip into your bathing suit and get outdoors to splash around. You can even pick up one of those kid pools for your children for less than $10.

16. Enjoy a Game Night

Expand on this idea and make a backyard obstacle course or try some crazy outdoor games. Messy Twister is particularly popular, where you fill in the dots on a Twister mat with colored shaving cream. Corn hole, ladder golf, and KanJam are also popular ideas.

17. Visit a Farmers Market

Click over to the USDA Farmers Market Directory to find a growers market near you. Local, in-season produce isn't only better for you, it's also cheaper. You can get some ingredients to make a meal, meet new people in your area, and enjoy some free entertainment.

18. Or a U-Pick Farm

I love finding nearby U-pick farms and getting barrels of strawberries, blueberries, and other delicious fruits and veggies. Just like with the farmers markets, this produce is usually cheaper than you'd find at the store. You can even pick in bulk and freeze, can, or otherwise preserve for off-season enjoyment.

19. Watch a Sunrise or Sunset

When the weather is nice, try getting up early to watch the sun rise above your hometown. It's not the kind of experience you might seek in the cold winter months, but it's definitely worth the loss of sleep. If you just need your shut-eye, soak in a gorgeous sunset instead. (For timing, type "When is sunrise/sunset?" into Google.)

20. Create an Album

Snap photos of all your summer adventures and make an album — whether digital or physical — to remember them. I'm trying to take one photo per day this year. Unfortunately, many of us are bound to tight, overwhelming schedules that leave little room for novelty or adventure. The good news is that making your life more interesting is easy if you are willing to make small departures from the norm. Here are 25 simple ways you can make your life more interesting — starting today. (See also: Reasons to Change Your Routine)

1. Greet the Dawn

Even if you're not a morning person, plan to watch the sun rise. Prepare for this moment by picking out a view point and determining when the weather in your area will be clear enough to usher in a beautiful day. Brew some strong coffee and bring a friend along. As the sun rises, remind yourself of all the possibilities that a new day holds.

2. Take a Different Path

Give yourself some extra time to take the scenic route to work. Try side streets instead of the freeway. Make a conscious effort to change your routine travels once-in-a-while and discover new places and new people.

3. Plan a Mini Roadtrip

Explore new vistas right around the corner. Search the web for nearby points of interest or comb the countryside for vegetable stands and garage sales. You don't have to travel far or spend a lot of time (or money) to make the most of the miles you roam. (See also: 14 Affordable Weekend Getaways)

4. Move to the Beat of a Different Drummer

Tired of listening to the same old song? Applications like Spotify allow users to preview different artists and listen to entire albums for free. Spotify can also make suggestions for other music based on the genres you enjoy most. Who knows, your quest for variety might reveal a whole new musical interest!

5. Turn Off Your TV

Watching TV is a passive activity at best. Why not turn it off for a day and actively search out your news and entertainment elsewhere? Read a newspaper, enjoy a play at a community theater, or simply revel in some rare silence.

6. Make Something Interesting

Try your hand at crafting. Explore making simple recyclable crafts for kids or try reconnecting with a skill you already have. Pintrest is a great place to search for quick and simple projects.

7. Find a Poem

Awaken your inner Shakespeare by penning a sonnet from words you find in newspapers, owners' manuals, magazines, or even this blog post. For example, choose every third word from your found material and place them into a word bank. Next, choose words from your bank that fit into a Haiku format (5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the next, and 5 for the last).

8. Wander Down Memory Lane

Remember all those pictures you took at your last family reunion or vacation? What about that old diary tucked away in the shoebox? Find those memories and spend some time with them. As you wander down memory lane, reflect on what was interesting to you back then. Sparking a new interest can start by rekindling forgotten embers.

9. Visit With Children

Kids aren't afraid to color outside the lines or paint the sky orange instead of blue. Spending time in their company will open you up to the wild musings of your inner child. The young folks in your life will revel in the attention and sometimes, as the old saying goes, kids say the darnedest things! (See also: 15 Free Ways to Entertain Kids)

10. Make Your Own Value Meal

If you had only $2.00 to make a meal, what would be on the menu? Scrounge around your pantry first and complement your culinary findings with a $2.00 purchase (or less) at your local grocery store or farmer's market.

11. Play Anthropologist

Grab a small notebook and a pen and situate yourself in a park, at a cafe, or in the mall. Write down your observations of the people you see and make notes of the tidbits of conversation you can't help overhearing. This exercise takes you out of your own head and tunes you into the world around you.

12. Perform Random Acts of Kindness

Make your day more interesting by bolstering your positive outlook and giving someone else's mood a little lift. Research in positive psychology shows that doing something unexpected and kind has benefits for you, as well as others. Try holding the door for someone, send a thank you e-mail, or try composing a "love letter" to a stranger.

13. Eat Outside the Box

Introduce your taste buds to a new experience. Maybe you've noticed a new restaurant or heard about an ethnic cuisine you've never eaten. Go ahead and give it a try — even if you only have an appetizer at first. For maximum effect, search out a recipe on your cuisine of choice and make it at home.

14. Have a Simple Scavenger Hunt

Have you ever noticed how focusing on one thing makes other things nearly impossible to see? Challenge your awareness patterns by going on a quick scavenger hunt in your home or office. Choose a simple trait to look for, like words spelled containing the letter "Q" or anything with the color green in it. Try to amass a collection of ten things that meet your chosen criteria. You might even find those long lost keys in the process.

15. Flip a Coin

Can't decide between two items on a menu or what to do on a random Sunday afternoon? Call one heads and the other tails and leave the decision to random whims of chance. You might be pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

16. Discover Treasure at the Library

Visit your local library and wander among the shelves. Scan the titles for something that grabs your attention and then look at the books on the shelves above and below. Because of libraries' organization system, there's a good chance you'll find something related, but just slightly different from what you originally found interesting.

17. Volunteer

What better way to make your day more interesting than to be the change you want to see in the world? Consider the local groups who do good work in your community. Reach out to them and offer your time and talent. If you are unsure where to start, an online resource like VolunteerMatch.org can help connect you to the causes near and dear to your heart. (See also: Unexpected Benefits of Volunteering)

18. Spend Time With Pets

Animals can be an endless source of interest and entertainment for the people in their lives. Treat your dog or cat to a new toy and spend a little time helping them enjoy it. Don't have a pet? Consider adopting one from a shelter or pet sit for a friend.

19. Revisit Your Childhood Dreams

What do you want to do when you grow up? Try to recall how you answered that question as a child. Did you want to be a nurse, an artist, or used car salesperson? If you're not already living that five-year-old's dream, take some time to read about the career you would have picked for yourself.

20. Stop and Smell the Roses

When did you last spend time enjoying a rose bush, bed of hydrangeas, or a beautiful bouquet at the grocery store? Flowers have been evolving for over 100 million years to bring you their enchanting looks and inviting fragrances.

21. Don't Surf — Stumble

StumbleUpon is a free web-based tool that helps you discover new sites, photos, and blogs. Just select what interests you, and StumbleUpon will suggest random related websites.

22. Repurpose Something

Add interest to your day, save money, and help the environment at the same time. Find an everyday object and envision another use for it. Brainstorm reuse ideas for typical throwaways like paper plates, coffee cups, and plastic bags. What new and useful creations can you make? (See also: 18 Practically Free Upcycled Craft Projects)

23. Say "Bonjour! Ciao! Hallo!"

Learn how to greet someone in a new language. It's quick and easy to acquire a few simple phrases like "How are you?" and "Thank you" in another tongue. Once you've mastered some pleasantries, find someone to practice them with. You might make a new friend in a faraway place!

24. Switch Hands

Most people tend to prefer one hand over the other for writing and other manual tasks. If it's safe and practical, try writing a short note or doodling a simple picture with your other hand. See if you can master simple tasks using your non-dominant hand.

25. Realize That Today Really Is Interesting

Maybe today is "National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day" or "Take Your Teddy Bear to Work Day." Find out what's special about today or learn about what happened today in history.

You don't have to do anything extravagant to experience a little variety in your life. Let go of the reins a bit and see where the ride takes you. Meeting new people, finding a poem, or a reviving a dormant talent carry benefits that extend far beyond breaking out of the mundane.

What will you do to make your life more interesting today?

This article is from Kentin Waits of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
