Do you want to fit your travel packing needs into carry-on luggage, regardless of whether your trip is two weeks or two months? Everything you need is in this ultimate carry-on packing list.

The Packing List for Ultimate Carry-On Travel

This carry-on packing list is flexible for multiple climates and scenarios. Pick and choose what you need from each of the “Optional” categories depending on your trip.

If you're outdoorsy and headed for Nepal, bring your down jacket, scarf, hat, hiking shoes, and headlamp. If you're city-slicking through Paris in autumn, leave that stuff behind and bring your ballet flats and a sweater for cool evenings.

This list is for guys and gals. Use it as your template and customize it as needed.

Luggage and Packing

This is the most crucial part of your packing list; luggage is your home on the road, and packing tools help you stay organized and maximize space.

Rolling Luggage/Backpack – I prefer rolling luggage (like the soft-sided Pacsafe Toursafe 21) because then I use a backpack as my personal item/daypack for electronics and extras. But when I'm going super light, I use one of these one bag travel options.
Daypack – Only needed if you're not doing one bag travel
Hoboroll – Invaluable ultralight packing tool; it organizes and compresses so much stuff

Clothing

2 Pairs Pants – Lightweight, quick-dry, can be dressed up or down

A sneaky trick is to wear a jacket with many pockets and load them up with heavy stuff; anything you are wearing doesn't count toward weight limits! After checking in, you can reorganize.

This is not your first trip down the jetway. You've got your eye mask, your noise-cancelling headphones, your laptop or tablet, your multi-item charger for the airport, your backup power source, and even your actual paper book in case all your technology runs out of battery. But what did you not think to put in your carry-on that could make your flight better? Here are a few I never fly without, and a few more I can't wait to try. Domestic

Maybe you're only going to be stuck in that hamster cage they call a seat for a few hours, but that doesn't mean you should show up without any provisions for your comfort.

1. A pencil and notebook

Unlike a laptop, which will run out of power, or a pen, which might refuse to write at altitude, this little piece of technology won't let you down when you are bored enough to write poetry or fill in the in-flight magazine's crossword puzzle.

2. A headphone splitter

While it's obvious you'll be bringing headphones, do you really want to sit there, laughing at the movie on your laptop, while your companion sits there and seethes? Share!

3. A medicine bag

Include painkillers, because, ouch: altitude. Antihistamines and decongestants are also good calls. Some of us like to carry something that will make us sleepy or calm our nerves. If you need an inhaler or insulin, it's obviously important to bring plenty for your own safety, but also because if you ever ask a flight attendant if they have a spare inhaler, you'll probably be denied boarding for medical reasons. They don't want to take the risk of anyone having a health emergency in the sky.

4. A change of clothes

Because you never know if or when your checked bag will make it to your destination, and what if the person next to you spills his coffee all over you?

5. A tennis ball

Huh? Travel & Leisure swears you should bring this piece of sports equipment on board, and use it to massage your back, legs, and feet to keep the blood flowing during the flight.

6. Business cards, or a copy of your manuscript

Because you never know when you'll be seated next to the one business contact you always dreamed of meeting.

7. Sanitizing wipes

Because did you know people change their babies' diapers on those tray tables? Wipe it down the moment you take your seat.

8. Another bag, like one of those shopping bags that pack down tiny

Because you might not be able to quickly stuff everything you used on the flight back into your carry-on when it's time to go.

9. A pacifier

Not traveling with a baby? Imagine what a hero you might become to the whole flight if you whip out a new, in-the-package bippy for a family that has lost theirs. Back when I traveled with infants in tow, I once had another mom offer me $10 for a single pacifier. (I gave it to her for free.)

10. Slipper socks

Because if you're like me, you wore slip-on sandals through security, and now your feet are cold.

11. An empty water bottle

12. A USB or Apple lightning cable

Some planes now have ports in the seat, so you can charge your phone! Make sure you buy the rapid charging kind.

13. Your rights

Print out the US Department of Transportation's rules on delays, bumping passengers, and compensation. Why? Because crews may take advantage of the fact that most people don't know off the top of their heads that they're entitled to 400% of the original fare, up to $1,350, in cash, if they're bumped and arrive at their destination more than two hours late on a domestic flight, or four hours on an international flight. Having these guidelines on hand will allow you to make an informed decision if you're asked to get off the plane, and to ask for what you're owed while you're still at the airport.

14. A comfort item or hypnotherapy recording

Do you get scared, especially during takeoff? Don't be ashamed to bring a stuffy from home that you can squeeze until its eyes bug out. Personally, I like to use self-hypnosis to talk myself down, and if you're new to that type of thing, you could download a recorded hypnosis session to your phone. The side benefit of using hypnosis to fight fear of flying is that it might actually help you fall asleep.

International

On an overseas flight, you will almost certainly try to sleep at some point, making your carry-on arsenal especially important. It's also more important to make friends, since you'll be stuck with everyone you see while boarding for the next 12 hours or more.

15. Treats for the crew

I never would have thought of this myself, but when I read about professional air passenger Ben Schlappig bringing designer chocolates to the flight attendants, I realized how much sense it makes. These are the people who will be responsible for, yes, making sure you make it to the emergency exit in a water landing, but also for whether you get a Jameson refill when you can't sleep with nine hours of flight time to go. Will they accept your goodies? Maybe, maybe not — I can imagine accepting edibles from unknown passengers being considered a security risk — but just the offer will mark you as a super nice passenger who deserves to be treated like one.

16. More than one kind of travel pillow

It may seem like a waste of space, but there are a lot of differently shaped travel pillows on the market now, and if you are trying for a solid six hours (let's not wish for the moon and say eight), you are going to want to change positions. On a recent trip to Australia, I alternated between a Turtl, which is like a scarf with a stiff support to let you sleep with your head leaning to the side, and one with a flat back so that I could recline straight back.

17. Something cozy to snuggle up and hide in

I like to wear a Chicago Cubs sweatshirt with pockets and hood so large I can pull it down over my eyes, but others swear by scarves or Turkish towels. In all cases, you're packing something you can use as a blanket or as a barrier between you and a questionably clean airline blanket, but it's also something you can put to other uses.

18. Melatonin

Sleep scientist Matthew Walker confirmed during a recent interview that this hormone in pill from can help you adjust to a new time zone. I take it about an hour before I want to fall asleep on a flight.

19. A cord for your glasses

On my last long-haul flight, I dropped my glasses in my sleep. The flight attendants let me crawl on the floor under my seat for an hour without mentioning that someone had turned in a lost pair of glasses.

20. The address of where you're staying, on paper

Before you land, the crew will pass out immigration forms, and you'll be expected to have that info at your fingertips. Don't leave it on an electronic device that might be out of power by now.

21. A truly delicious snack

When I traveled with little kids, I always tried to bring a toy or book they'd never seen before to keep them occupied. You can do this for yourself, too, by skipping your typical snacks and stashing something you love, like a high-end chocolate bar or some gourmet wasabi popcorn, into your bag. If you have the willpower, save it for midflight, when the flight attendants are sick of you and you feel like the journey will never end. Then eat your treat as slowly as possible.

8 Things You Should Always Pack in Your Carry-On

Every traveler wants their trip to go off without a hitch, but human error can foil those plans. Maybe you forgot to pack your medication, or perhaps the airline sent your bags to the wrong destination. Life happens. Which is why you should keep your vacay on track by keeping your necessities within reach at all times. Here's what you should always pack in your carry-on, no matter what.

1. Second form of ID

Most of us keep our driver's license in our wallets, but it's also a good idea to pack your passport, too — even for domestic trips. Any number of things can happen to your ID while traveling, like accidentally misplacing it in the airport, or neglecting to put it in your wallet before leaving your house. I like to travel with a passport just in case I want to check out a nearby country on my vacation, like when I hopped over to Canada on a recent trip to Detroit.

If you're traveling internationally, you'll obviously need a passport as your main form of ID. This requires extra precautions, like making a copy of your passport photo page in case your passport is lost or stolen during your travels. You'll have an easier time expediting a new passport from the local embassy if you can show proof of ID in a photocopy. This five-second trick can save you hours and hours of unnecessary stress, especially if there's a language barrier. (See also: What to Do If You Don't Have Your ID at the Airport)

2. Empty water bottle

I recently traveled to Columbus, Ohio and while waiting in line for security, I saw a familiar sight: travelers chugging whatever drink they brought with them to the airport because they forgot that you can't take liquids with you through security. Those same people often then end up buying $3 bottles of water at expensive airport shops once they're on the other side.

To avoid the bloat and expense of that experience, I travel with my empty Nalgene bottle that I fill up with water once I've crossed over to the gates. 3. Medication

To step foot on an airplane, I need at least two glasses of wine with a Xanax chaser. If the captain says there will be turbulence, I up my dosage. This ritual saves me from having a heart attack midflight, and the rest of the passengers can rest easy without all my heavy breathing and cursing.

It's a good idea to have whatever medication you need for your various ailments in case the flight is delayed and/or your bags don't arrive at your destination the same time you do. Outside of your prescriptions, don't forget to bring a decongestant if you have trouble clearing your ears during flights, and a general pain reliever (as long as they're safe to take with your other medications, of course). The chance you'll get a headache increases, like, tenfold as soon as you enter the airport — but you already know this.

4. Chargers for devices

Often I travel by train to the closest airport, and my battery is half depleted by the time I get there 90 minutes later. Seeing as how I verge on having a stroke whenever my juice gets below 10 percent, I always have my chargers in my carry-on. You never know when you'll be in a pinch and need your devices to be all powered up. Nowadays you'll find plugs and USB outlets all over airport terminals and on planes, trains, and even in taxis. 5. Toothbrush

If you're not able to shower for an extended period of time — maybe you're on a particularly long flight or maybe you've hit a few hiccups in your travel plans — a fresh toothbrush and toothpaste will leave you feeling clean enough to power through until you find a shower.

6. Cash

I rarely use cash because I love the compactness and convenience of my debit and credit cards, but I've been on trips on more than one occasion where they've been flagged after a single swipe for security reasons because of suspect activity. That generally means my banking institutions are trying to protect me from fraud situations, but it's really annoying when I need to pay for something, and downright infuriating when I don't have access to a working phone to call and sort the error out straight away. Now I always travel with $100 in cash in $20 increments in my wallet when I go on a trip so I can at least afford essentials, like food or a cab ride.

7. Multipurpose jacket

Do you know why most modes of public transportation keep their cars and cabins at chilling temperatures? Neither do I. But I always, always travel with a light jacket or hoodie — even if it's 95º F where I'm leaving or where I'm going. If I don't need to wear it, at least now I have something on which to lay my head when the cocktails kick in.

8. Glasses

If you wear contacts, pack your glasses. You may need them. This is especially important if you have to drive anywhere once you reach your destination. Your eyes may be dry from the flight, or you might lose a contact in transit. You may even want to pack a second pair of glasses and contacts in your checked luggage, just in case. If you're headed someplace fantastic like the jungles of Costa Rica, you won't find a Lenscrafters, anywhere. Stay smart, and stay sighted.

Getting ready for an upcoming trip is exciting. But when you make your packing list, stick to the essentials. There's no need to blow money on heavy, bulky gear you'll never use. Paring down your packing can also save you the expense and inconvenience of an overweight bag. Here are 10 necessities I've never regretted bringing on a trip.

1. Earplugs

Sleeping poorly can wreck your mood and put a serious damper on your travel fun or the business meetings you have to get to. I always make sure I have several pairs of earplugs to help me get the shut-eye I need, whether I'm on a plane, a bus, or in an unexpectedly loud hotel room. When it comes to sleeping well, you're always better off being prepared, especially if you're a light sleeper. (See also: Packing Light? Don't Forget These 5 Must-Haves)

2. Passport photocopy

You don't even have to purchase this item. All it takes is a little preparation before you leave and you can save yourself from a potential major hassle while you're away. Make a couple of photocopies of your passport's main page (the one with your picture on it), and any other pages that might be relevant — for example, if you've had to get a visa in advance, make a copy of that page, too.

Leave one copy with a friend or relative — whoever is most likely to not lose it. You'll want to have a copy for yourself, too. Some hotels require you to leave a passport at the front desk during your stay, but if they'll allow it, leave a photocopy instead so that you don't ever lose possession of your original document. As a backup, upload a digital copy of the passport to a secure cloud storage app such as Google Drive. For extra security, you can password protect any file on Google Drive. Upload a photo of your passport on your smartphone, too, in case you need to access it offline. Just be sure to lock your phone.

Consider also making a photocopy of your driver's license, credit, and debit cards. For security reasons you may not want to upload all of the information to the internet, but you can keep a paper copy in a secure place away from your wallet. Lock it in your room safe if one is available. At the very least, note the international and local bank customer service numbers for your card accounts, so that you can easily call them if a card gets blocked, lost, or stolen. 3. Plug adapters

Most countries outside North America use electrical outlets featuring different kinds of plug inputs. If you're traveling often to different countries, it's worth investing in one or two universal plug adapters that can be used in multiple countries. That way, you'll never have to worry about which country-specific adapter to pack and you'll be able to charge all of your accessories from anywhere in the world.

Voltage is a separate issue. While the electrical supply in the U.S. is 110-120v, many other countries use 220-240v. Computers and smartphones are usually dual-voltage so you don't have to worry about them. But many styling products, such as hair dryers or flat irons, are not. Be sure you check before you bring them along, so you don't inadvertently fry them when you plug them in overseas. You may want to buy a dual-voltage styling tool, such as the Salona Professional flat iron, which also comes with plug adapters.

4. Bottle opener

Is there anything worse than buying a bottle of local wine and then realizing you have no way to open it? Sure, there are plenty of hacks to open one without a bottle opener, but wouldn't it be easier to not have to try them?

5. Swiss army knife

There are endless uses for this travel standby. Maybe you'll use your Swiss army knife at an impromptu picnic when you need a way to slice the Swiss cheese. And those mini scissors are great for trimming fingernails on the go. Bonus: These handy little tools often have a bottle opener attached, so you can cross two items off this list at once.

Just be sure not to pack this one in your carry on, or you'll have a problem at security and have to ditch your tool.

6. Travel credit card

It is a 99 percent sure thing that you will be spending on hotels, restaurants, and activities. It's much better to get rewarded for your travel expenses, which helps you earn free travel for the future.

7. Almonds and dried fruit

Never let your blood sugar drop while on the go. These snacks are good for the plane and even better for any emergency situations. They are both healthy and filling, so you don't have to bring a lot. 8. Medicines

Stave off muscle pains and headaches by bringing along some ibuprofen. Be cautious with gel caps, since they will melt in hot climates.

Bring Benadryl for allergies or as a sleep aid in a pinch, Dramamine for motion sickness on speeding buses or rocking boats, and a bit of Pepto Bismol for those meals that just don't quite agree with your stomach.

To prevent minor cuts from becoming raging infections, travel with Neosporin or another anti-bacterial cream, and bandages to keep the wound clean. You may think your cut will heal on its own, but you may be surprised at how quickly a wound can fester, especially in tropical climates.

9. Journal

The moments are fleeting when you travel, but what you write about them isn't. Make a commitment to write a little bit each day about your trip. You can do this on an electronic device to save space, but it's also helpful to have a small notebook or travel journal as a visual reminder to write. It never hurts to have a little paper on you anyway.

Once you get home, you'll be able to see your reflections and share details you might have otherwise forgotten with family and friends. And just imagine finding your scribblings a few years from now.

10. Comfortable shoes

The whole "beauty is pain" adage doesn't count when you're out of your normal ZIP code. Comfortable shoes will save your feet multiple times while you're traveling. You can go anywhere, on foot, without paying for it later in the form of blisters. My favorite travel footwear is Lems Shoes.

1. Edit and organize

Not only can you improve your life with a deep declutter, it's an essential first step in staging a home properly. Toss out the junk, donate unused items, and consider packing for your move early and storing boxes off-site or in the garage. Once that's done, tame the wild spaces in your home. Organize messy closets and neatly arrange the pantry, basement, and other catchall areas.

2. Clean

Staging is an art, so start with a clean palette. Mop the floors, wash the windows, scrub the toilets, and dust anything that's standing still. In the minds of most buyers, a clean home is a well cared-for home.

3. Pack up the personality

As a stager, your goal is simple: Help potential buyers feel as if your home was made for them. Since you want to appeal to the widest audience possible, it's time to put away the personal photos and bubble-wrap that troll doll collection you've been curating since 1982. Sure, these things may mean the world to you, but they only limit the vision of would-be buyers.

4. Paint

5 Things Worth Buying Before Heading Overseas

From the bizarre-looking ostrich pillow, to jackets riddled with specialized pockets, you could spend thousands of dollars on supposedly must-have travel accessories. But which gadgets, innovations, or services are actually worth your money? This short list includes the items and services that globetrotting friends and I have found to be truly indispensable.

1. A Better Travel Pillow

Search Kickstarter or Indiegogo and you'll find a ton of variations on the classic travel pillow, and for good reason. Airplane seats are tiny, and some airlines still don't have reclining seats. If an accessory that costs $40 could help you sleep comfortably on a long-haul flight, it could save you thousands of dollars compared to the cost of upgrading to first class.

Normal inflatable or stuffed travel pillows have never been comfortable for me because the back of the U shape prevents my back from resting comfortably against the seat. So, on a recent 13-hour flight to Australia, I brought along not one, but two new travel companions: the Kuhi Comfort pillow, basically two plush mini pillows connected by a strap that goes behind your neck, and the Trtl Pillow, which is really more of a combination scarf and neck brace. Each cost about $40.

I found the soft and cozy Kuhi more helpful than the Turtl, which is supportive for sleeping without a window seat but can dig into your chin a bit. While I'm not 100% sold on either of these particular pillows, I'll never go back to a standard travel pillow again. Even if you don't want to experiment with a newfangled pillow, swapping a standard travel pillow for a memory foam or loose bead-filled pillow will increase your comfort significantly because the part behind your neck will flatten when you lean on it.

2. An Aeronaut Carry-On

Wheeled carry-ons have become the norm, but have you ever thought about what you sacrifice for those wheels, such as the ability to easily jump on a crowded escalator or bus?

Designer Tom Bihn has developed a cult following among travelers for his ultra-customized, highly organized bags.

"There's a bit of an "ethos" you subscribe to when you buy a Tom Bihn bag. It inspires you to lighten your load and be a more efficient traveler," explains travel blogger Liz Gross, who recently carried everything she needed for a five-day business trip in an Aeronaut 45 duffle bag, which fits under the seat in some planes and in the overhead bin in others. Starting at $295 (without straps or the coordinating packing cubes that Bihn acolytes swear by), the bag is not cheap, but it has well-thought-out features such as clips to keep things in place, and pockets that can be combined to make larger pockets if needed.

3. A Personal Wi-Fi Hotspot

Using your cell phone overseas can be a pricey proposition. AT&T international plans start at $40 for minimal data use, in addition to your regular plan fees, and on top of that, phone calls can cost up to $1 a minute.

A more affordable way to go — especially if you are traveling with one or more companions — is to rent or buy a wireless hotspot. I brought Tep Wireless' portable Wi-Fi device to Australia, and my whole family was able to connect to it to use the web for navigation, looking up ferry schedules, and even making phone calls and sending texts via Google Voice. At $9.95 per day for the device rental and unlimited data, this makes a lot more sense than purchasing separate data roaming packages for multiple people.

4. A "Spinner" Suitcase

When I replaced one of my kids' suitcases a couple years ago, I didn't immediately realize how the new one was different than the rest of the family's. But after taking all three of our kids to Europe, I noticed that my daughter was having an easier time than the rest of us maneuvering her bag, especially in situations wherein she needed to move the bag in a tight space. Her suitcase was a "spinner," or a suitcase with four wheels that can move in any direction. These extra wheels are especially helpful for handling heavier bags.

But wait, didn't I just recommend a bag with no wheels at all? Indeed, with four wheels sticking out, spinners aren't ideal for fitting into overhead bins. They're best if you need to carry a lot of stuff and plan to check your bag. Make sure to get one with larger wheels, as these models are easier to tip and pull like a two-wheeler when desired.

5. Airport Spa Services

When flying to England for a wedding last year, fears about long TSA lines pushed me to arrive at the airport two and a half hours early, leaving no time to dash off for the mani-pedi that I was going to need for the big event. So imagine my delight when we passed a spa on the way to our gate in the international terminal of the San Francisco airport! I spent an hour in a massage chair there and strolled out, wedding ready, just as boarding began.

Since then, I've learned that the company XpresSpa has spas in airports all over the United States, including Chicago O'Hare, LAX, and JFK. Yes, it's more expensive than the same service in a neighborhood salon, but given the alternative of spending that sharing an armrest in a plastic waiting area chair, it's so worth it.

5 Things You Should Never Pack for Vacation

Going on a vacation is supposed to be fun, so you never want to get weighed down by what you're packing. Here's a useful list of items you will never need once you get wherever you're going. These things will become a waste of space in your luggage, not to mention a waste of the time you'll spend packing and unpacking them.

1. Multiple Pairs of Shoes

I get it, shoes are awesome. But if you're being completely honest with yourself, whether you're going on a weeklong trip or you'll be backpacking around the world, you don't need that many pairs of shoes. It may be hard, but it's not impossible to pare down your shoes.

Shoes take up space and they weigh a fair amount. You will never regret bringing one pair of functional, semi-fashionable sneakers. These will come in handy at literally any destination, since traveling usually entails some amount of walking. So be kind to your feet and bring appropriate footwear.

Depending on your destination, you should also bring one pair of versatile sandals. This means something that you can wear out at night or to the beach during the day. These should not give you blisters within five minutes of putting them on your feet.

2. Excessive Toiletries

You might have a complicated and involved skin care routine that includes face wash, toner, moisturizer, eye cream, and more. You might be loathe to go without your favorite bath soap and shampoo during your trip. But you'll survive. Not only do these items take up space, they have the potential to leak and get flagged by security. Use what the hotel or a local store offers. It'll be fine, really.

3. Too Many Electronics

We all love our gadgets and electronics. Surely, you're going to bring your phone and maybe your computer along. But traveling is also a time to disconnect, and you don't want to get bogged down into organizing and packing all of those extra charging cords — only to end up not using any of them because you were too busy having a good time.

Electronics take up space, they weigh a lot, and they're an extra thing to worry about getting stolen since they're usually among the higher-value items you'll have with you. Limit it and reduce them whenever it's possible.

4. Towels

That's right. They seem like an item you can't live without, but you really don't need to pack towels. If you are on a backpacking trip, you can bring a microfiber backpacking towel along or just dry off with a cotton T-shirt.

Towels that are packed away in your bag for any amount of time are going to get stinky and funky really fast. You'll be happier you left them at home.

5. Easy and Cheap Things You Can Buy

Nobody should be packing anything that you'll want to buy once you've reached your destination (preferably with a no foreign transaction fee credit card). Consider the place you're going and identify things you're interested in buying, whether they're practical items that cost less or just souvenirs.

Don't bring anything that falls into this category. You can always make your purchases on the road with space to spare in your bag.

Moving can be an expensive, daunting experience. Worst of all, many people spend unnecessary money on moving supplies and items they simply don't need. On the other hand, you don't want to be dealing with the loss of property or issues after the move because you tried to save a few bucks.

The trick is to keep the purchases light, while getting everything you need to safely transport your items to your new destination in one piece. That's why we're here to help you determine what you should, and what you definitely shouldn't skimp on.

Professional Movers

Hiring professional movers may be one of the best things you do for your move. While some people like to rely on themselves, friends, and family members to load and unload the moving truck, this can be a huge waste of time and energy that could be better spent settling into your new place. This can also be a very stressful event that causes friction with friends and family members, so just leave the dirty work to the professionals.

Quality professional movers will carefully load your items into the truck, and should adequately protect them so that you can move with the peace of mind that your items are going to make it to your new destination in one piece. In fact, most movers will arrive with moving blankets and padding to further protect any fragile items.

Contact at Least Three Moving Companies

While you will need movers, you want to be careful about who you entrust with all of your possessions. Not all movers are created equal (which you hopefully won't find out the hard way). Carefully research movers to ensure that you're getting what you're expecting. Ask neighbors for recommendations, check Yelp and the Better Business Bureau for customer reviews and complaints, and do your due diligence to find the best movers at the best value in your area.

It's usually a good idea to contact at least three reputable moving companies so that you can compare their services and costs. You can also ask them to do an in-home estimate. This will ensure that you get a more accurate quote and it will allow you to gauge whether it's really a company you want to be working with. Make sure to carefully read the estimate or contract to verify what is included with the moving services before signing anything.

Additional Services Offered by Moving Companies

Some moving companies will also help you pack, but this is one expense that you may want to skip. If you are hard-pressed for time, or your move is quickly approaching, then it may be worth the investment to have your moving company help with the packing. Otherwise, roll up your sleeves and get to work, because it can save you big money in the end.

Some moving companies will also offer free storage for up to 30 days, which can be very valuable to you if your new place isn't ready yet. If you think you'll need storage, it may be wise to look for a moving company that offers it for free, rather than hiring a separate moving and storage company, which will likely cost you more money and a bigger headache in the end.

Moving Insurance

Accidents happen, which is why you should be prepared for them. Moving insurance is an absolute necessity. It will provide you with peace of mind, and in the event that the unthinkable happens, you can receive full or partial reimbursement for your damaged or lost items. Just as you wouldn't skimp on health or auto insurance, you shouldn't skimp on moving insurance.

Most moving companies will offer some form of general insurance, but this generally tends to be about $0.60 per pound. This means that if you have a 48-inch television that only weighs 25 pounds, if the movers should drop it and you have not paid for additional moving insurance, you would only be entitled to a reimbursement of $15.

As another example, the typical two-bedroom home usually weighs in somewhere around 4,500 pounds. Say the truck is completely destroyed (along with all of your property) — you would only be reimbursed $2,700. Your lifetime of saving and carefully choosing what to spend your money on is only worth $2,700 to the moving company. Unless you think you can refurnish an entire two-bedroom home for $2,700 (along with all of your clothing and personal possessions), you can clearly see the need for supplemental moving insurance.

On the plus side, moving insurance is usually very affordable, particularly if you choose a higher deductible. The price will vary depending on how much insurance you need and the declared value of the items you want to insure. In most cases, you need to arrange moving insurance at least 48 hours before your move, so this isn't something you can procrastinate on.

Packing Supplies

More important than the quantity of packing supplies is the quality. The last thing you want to do is save a couple of bucks by buying cheap packing tape only to find that the heavy boxes split open on moving day. Don't skimp on tape or packing material for antiques and particularly valuable items.

When it comes to glass, porcelain, or ceramic, packing paper or newspaper should work fine. You can also save some money by placing one foam dinner plate in between two glass plates. This will protect the plates during the move and make it easier for you to unpack.

You'll also need things like a marking pen, cushioning material, scissors or a utility knife, and a tape gun, but you shouldn't have to spend a lot on these items. You also shouldn't need to spend much on boxes, if anything at all. You can typically find free boxes at your local grocery store or recycling center. Just make sure the boxes are in good condition and can safely transport your heavy items. The last thing you want is to pack your valuables in an old cardboard box that rips open on moving day or crumbles under the weight of other boxes. The cost to replace these items will likely be much higher than what you would've spent on quality boxes.

Don't Forget Your Tax Deductions

On the plus side, if your move is related to work, you can write off part of the move on your taxes. That means the movers, moving truck and supplies, and other must-have essentials might be deductible at the end of the year. Just make sure your move meets the IRS's time and distance test requirements in order to safely deduct any reasonable moving expenses.

You should also consider labels or labeled packing tape that specifies which room each box belongs in. This will keep the move organized and save time moving and unpacking.

The last thing you want is to get to your new place and realize that you don't have enough space to fit all of your belongings. If possible, print out the floor plan and draw your furniture inside beforehand. If it doesn't fit in the drawing, it probably won't fit into your new place. This will also help you arrange items quickly when you're moving in, saving time spent with the movers.

The less you have to move, the easier the move will be. Having fewer items to move can also help save you money on a larger rental truck, moving supplies, and time with movers. By eliminating junk first, you can also store less, saving you money on your storage unit. If you get rid of enough stuff, you may be able to do a direct move and skip the storage unit altogether, saving you even more money.

As you're packing your items, decide what you really need. If you haven't used something or worn certain items of clothing in over a year, what are the odds you'll use them in the next year? Consider recycling or donating these items instead. You may also have items that can be sold on eBay or Craigslist, so you can make a little extra cash before the move.

3. Compare Several Moving Companies

Check Yelp or other online review sites to find several moving companies in your area. Compare their prices, services, customer ratings, and willingness to help. Look for hidden fees and insurance costs to make sure you won't be shocked by the final price at the end. You don't need to hire a moving company just because you asked for an estimate, so make sure to do your research.

Boxes can cost an average of $50–$400, particularly if you choose various sizes. 6. Move During Off-Season

Moving during the off-season can result in savings. If you can be flexible on dates, keep your options open. Remember, the busier the season is, the more it will cost you.

Most people move at the end of the month, so if you can move mid-month, you may save on your new lease, the moving truck, and moving services. Avoiding the 15th of the month can save you even more because this is another popular move-out date, so aim for odd dates. Moving mid-week, as opposed to on the weekend, can also save you money and help reduce traffic. Moving in the summer is the busiest time, while October is the slowest time.

7. Do Your Own Packing

Did you know that about 1/3 of the moving costs go straight to packing? By skipping the full-service move and packing the items yourself, you can save up to 35% on your moving expenses. Hiring movers to pack your belongings may seem tempting, but the savings in time and energy is likely not worth the cost. You may be surprised at just how quickly you can pack your belongings, especially when you have a plan.

When all else fails, it's time to start cashing in on favors from your friends and family. They may be able to help you pack or move your belongings, so you can save money on movers. While enlisting help can save you money, you'll want to be careful with this tip because moving can be an extremely stressful process and can cause disagreements between you and your helpers. It may be worth the money to hire movers so that you can just sit back, relax, and delegate.

5 Ways Carry-On Luggage Can Save You Time and Money

I don't know about you, but just the thought of air travel fills me with dread. Booking a flight is a bit like agreeing to toss my schedule into a chipper-shredder for at least a day and embracing the Great Unknown. The whole process is just stressful enough that travelers are hungry for any tip or trick to help the whole process go a bit more smoothly. (See also: 15 Airport Hacks From Professional Travelers)

After 15 years of living far enough from family that any visit requires a flight, I've adopted a personal travel policy that makes a world of difference: I pack strategically and fit everything into a single carry-on bag. Seriously — I haven't checked a bag since the Clinton Administration. If you're still checking luggage when you fly, it's time for a change. Here are five ways you can save time and money by traveling with only a carry-on.

1. Easier Check-Ins

Without luggage to tag and check, you can skip the long lines at the check-in counter. Print your boarding passes beforehand or at the self-service check-in machines at the airport and then breeze right over to the TSA screening line. If you're running late, being able to dodge even a single slow-moving line can mean the difference between making your flight and screaming as you watch it taxi down the runway.

2. No Fees… Most of the Time

One of the most obvious benefits of traveling with a carry-on only is avoiding the notorious checked baggage fee. Depending on the carrier, these charges can range from $25–$50 for the first two bags and up to $125 for each additional bag. For budget-conscious travelers, those numbers can add up quickly. And while the majority of airlines still don't charge for properly-sized carry-on bags, Frontier Airlines' new fees may signify the first shot across the bow.

3. Itinerary Flexibility

During my most recent flight in August of last year, thunderstorms in Denver (my connecting city) left me stuck in Portland, Oregon. By checking-in with the gate attendant frequently, I was able to get rerouted through Chicago. The first question she asked me was "Did you check any luggage?" Of course I hadn't. I had everything I needed in a small carry-on slung over shoulder. No need to worry about where my luggage would end up and no need to make a special trip to the airport to pick up my belongings a day or two after I arrived at my final destination. I saved hours of time, avoided lots of drama, and dodged a major migraine.

4. Theft and Loss Avoidance

Take a second to Google this phrase: "TSA theft checked luggage." If you still feel confident about the security of your checked luggage after wading through the 51,000 results, kudos to your boundless optimism. Though I don't travel with anything terribly expensive, I still cringe at the thought of someone thumbing through my daily planner, pocketing my favorite pair of sunglasses, or (worst of all), nabbing my fat jeans.

5. Speed and Convenience

Ever notice how antsy everyone gets as soon as a plane hits the tarmac? It's not because your fellow passengers have all developed a mad craving for a gooey Cinnabon — they're hoping to beat you to the car rental counter. Not having to wait for your luggage to be spit out onto the baggage carousel is a major benefit, especially if there are a limited number of rental cars or taxis available. Once again, the advantage goes to the traveler with the least amount of stuff to haul around.

Let's face it, we live in a new era. Air travel sucks most of the time and all signs point to the whole process getting a lot scarier for travelers in the not-too-distant future. Making it just a little more bearable means planning carefully, preparing diligently — and always packing lightly.

15 Savvy Tips for a Smoother Move

Whether you're moving into the house of your dreams or simply to a new apartment across town, the process can be daunting. I've been there, recently, and I'm only now recovering from the exhaustion of it all. Along the way, I learned some of the major DOs and DON'Ts related to moving, and I'm going to share them with all of you! (See also: How to Ensure You Get the Home Loan You Want)

1. Simplify

Now's the time to go through your stuff and weed out the extras. Throw away any trash that might be lingering in your junk drawers. Give away anything you no longer use to friends or donate to a local charity (some will come and pick up your items from you!).

A good place to start? Give your closet a long, hard look to see where you can pare down. Fewer things to move equals fewer headaches. (See also: 8 Essential Pieces for Your Capsule Wardrobe)

2. Sell

What you don't trash or donate, you should consider selling in a yard sale. Check to see if your community organizes any neighborhood-wide sales, which can help with getting more traffic to your location. Otherwise, use sites like Craigslist or even local Facebook boards to unload your items and earn some cash to help with your moving expenses.

3. Make a List

Everyday life can get rather hectic when all your stuff starts piling up in boxes. So, prepare yourself by making a list of what you need to accomplish during your move. This list might include any appointments you have, bills that need to be paid, or other obligations. Also put a couple moving-related points on there like changing your address with USPS or ordering checks and other necessities with your new number on them. Hang your list on the refrigerator so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle.

4. Start Early

As soon as we knew we'd be moving, I started packing. I packed away everything nonessential and even slimmed down my wardrobe to 10 simple, mix and match pieces. By packing early, you eliminate a lot of mess and everyday cleaning that would otherwise need to happen on top of all the other things you're doing. 5. Pack a Bag

Likewise, once you've determined what your essential items are, get a backpack or overnight bag out that you'll reserve for the move itself. You'll want these items handy when everything else in your life is in boxes. Our large suitcase contained a change of clothes, pajamas, personal care items, important documents, our laptop, and some other valuables.

6. Set Time Aside

I rather cavalierly thought we'd be able to pack our entire home in a couple hours each evening for a few days. Boy, was I wrong. Especially if you have children, it's important to set aside dedicated time for packing — preferably when your little one is being taken care of elsewhere. Not only is a half-packed home dangerous for young kids (lots of choking hazards hanging around), but it's also nearly impossible to finish everything you need to do. 7. Reserve

If you plan to rent a moving truck, reserve it as early as you have your move date. We learned the hard way that vans get scheduled quickly, and if you live in a smaller area — it can be hard, if not impossible, to find alternatives. Also be sure to check your local paper or the company's website for any deals they might be running. And read all the fine print before you sign on the dotted line.

8. Organize

When it comes to packing, don't toss everything in a box. Come up with an organization method that works for you. Maybe you pack all your office items in one box or all your dinnerware in another. Label the boxes clearly — including which boxes contain fragile items and even which box goes into what room — so when you arrive at your new digs, there's no guesswork involved.

9. Hunt Around

And speaking of boxes, don't immediately go out and buy brand new cardboard. Check grocery and big box stores for sizes big and small that will be recycled. We were able to get all the boxes we needed for our move with a few trips to a grocery store across town. Call ahead before making any big trips to see if the store offers its boxes to the public. Before you recycle them after the move, see if you can pay it forward to a friend.

10. Think Outside the Box

Better yet, pack what you can without the use of boxes. Suitcases can hold a good number of your clothes, tote bags can carry stuffed animals and other soft items, zip bags can house small items, and laundry bins are golden. You can even keep your clothes in the dresser drawers, just remove them while moving the dresser itself to lighten the load.

11. Repurpose

If you run out of packing material (bubble wrap, newspaper, etc.), use towels, socks, and even old plastic grocery bags to help cushion delicate items. You can use paper plates to cradle fragile china. I even used a couple pillows and big blankets to keep our television and other electronics safe from dings and dents during their travels.

12. Dig Deep

Reach into the far back of your pantries and freezers to use up any last bits of food you have hiding. It's best to keep fresh food purchases to a minimum in the week before your move to eliminate any waste that might occur in transit. Plus, there's nothing more gratifying than filling up your new refrigerator with a stock of fresh groceries.

13. Incentivize

For basic moves, you might need a few more hands. Invite your friends over and offer pizza and beer (or a quinoa bake and herbal tea — you get the idea) for their efforts. As much as moving is hard work, the whole thing is made much more pleasant when you spend the time with friends and family. And while you're at it, make sure that everything is ready to move when they arrive so no one is standing around awkwardly waiting.

14. Hire Help

For very large or tricky items (think pianos!), you might want to consider hiring movers. Did you know you don't need to contract them move all your stuff? Call and arrange for a quote for just the biggest, heaviest, and otherwise trickiest pieces of furniture. You may save yourself some money this way, as well as hold onto potential dollars you otherwise sink into medical bills or replacement items that are damaged by your amateur schlepping techniques.

15. Make Time

If it's at all possible, try to get some overlapping dates for your move. For example, explore the idea of pre-possession or post-possession if you're buying a home. Many lawyers don't love drafting up the extra paperwork involved, but we got pre-possession of our home for an extra two days and it made a huge difference. Just FYI: You'll need to arrange for insurance coverage and cover utilities during this time, among a few other considerations that your agent can help walk you through.

Packing light doesn't just save you money on luggage fees; it also gives you more freedom to move around and explore. Here's the main thing to remember: It won't be a disaster if you don't have something when you need it during the trip.

Most of the time, you can simply buy it there. As a bonus, shopping somewhere new is an experience in itself — you get to explore the place as a local running an errand, and if you're traveling abroad, the packaging is a marvel! And speaking of shopping, you'll want to leave some empty space in that suitcase for all the souvenirs and gifts you do buy there. (See also: Best Travel Rewards Credit Cards)

Here are a few things you should leave behind when you leave home.

1. Lots of Clothes

Don't pack 20 outfits for a 20-day trip. No matter how long the trip is, you only really need one week's worth of clothes. Don't worry about running out of things to wear; you'll be able to do laundry during the trip. The hotel laundry may be pricey, but there will definitely be a laundromat or a sink that you can use.

Take out that busy top that you can only wear with one pair of pants. It's important that you'll be able to mix and match your clothes. If you'll be traveling somewhere cold, bring items that can be layered. (See also: 15 Packing Secrets From a Professional Hobo)

Consider the climate, the environment, and the culture at the destination. You won't need a coat in Singapore or a sequined dress in the Amazon. If you're traveling to religious sites, don't pack anything that may be considered inappropriate there.

2. Lots of Shoes

Resist the temptation to bring bulky dress shoes. You'll probably spend a lot of time on your feet, so you'll need comfortable shoes or sandals. If you plan to eat at a fancy restaurant, then bring a pair of heels or dressy flats. Three pairs of shoes should be enough to cover all occasions.

3. Toiletries

Most hotels and even some hostels provide basic toiletries, such as shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, and soap. They may not be your favorite brands, but they'll do the job. In the unlikely situation that they damage your skin or your hair, you can purchase other brands at the local drugstore.

Only bring the items that you absolutely won't get at the hotel and only bring enough to last for the length of the trip. For example, I have acne-prone skin, so I have a bunch of medicated products that I bought from a clinic. I transfer them into small travel-sized containers and bring them along with me wherever I go, but I leave behind all other bathroom items.

4. Expensive Accessories

Leave your diamond earrings and designer handbags at home. You'll be exploring unfamiliar places, and it'll be a lot safer without flashy items that could potentially mark you as a target.

If you want to wear your good jewelry to a special occasion like a destination wedding, then pack it in your carry-on bag. At the destination, leave it in the hotel safe when you're not wearing it. And because things can get lost despite your best efforts, check your travel insurance policy to see if it covers lost or stolen jewelry.

5. Hair Styling Tools

Hair dryers and curling irons take up a lot of space. Maybe the hair dryer at the hotel won't be as powerful as you like, but it will only take a few minutes longer to dry your hair. Your hair can probably use some rest from hot styling tools anyway.

If you can't style your hair as you usually do with the minimal tools you have in the hotel room, put it up in an easy updo. Or if you want to sport some curls, there are some no-heat curling methods that actually work pretty well.

6. Towels

It's nice to dry yourself off with a big fluffy towel after a hot shower. But you should take that towel out of your bag because the hotel probably has an endless supply of towels. And even if you'll be staying at a hostel that doesn't provide a towel, you can save space by bringing a lightweight microfiber towel instead.

7. Books

Your little e-reader can store more books than you can read in a year, so there's really no need to pack a real book. But if you have to, bring just one and visit the hotel library or a local bookstore when you finish it.

Instead of bringing a paper guidebook, choose a few important pages and photocopy them. Over time, I've found that I can get by with only the maps from the guidebook and some summarized notes on my smartphone.

8. Unnecessary Gadgets and Appliances

You may need a laptop for work, but will you also be using your tablet, e-reader, MP3 player, and all three cameras? Most gadgets are great at multitasking, so choose just a few of your favorite ones. You can read your e-book on your smartphone, for example. It won't be ideal, but it will only be for the duration of the trip.

You also probably won't need to bring small appliances like an iron, a steamer, a coffee maker, or a humidifier. Just because the the box says "travel water purifier" doesn't mean you have to bring it on an actual trip!

15 Packing Secrets From a Professional Traveler

I have been living out of my luggage since 2007 — literally. I sold everything I owned to travel the world with one checked bag in tow. And when I get a chance to leave the big bag behind, I travel for months on end with carry-on luggage only.

Here are 15 of the best packing secrets I've learned from seven years of full-time travel.

Wardrobe

Before you even start packing, there's an art to choosing a travel-friendly wardrobe.

Stick to Three Colours

By ensuring your entire travel wardrobe matches (including shoes!), you'll have infinitely more combinations of clothing to choose from.

Choose Multi-Functional

A sarong is a perfect example of multi-functional travel gear. It can double as a blanket, skirt, towel, beach accessory, privacy curtain, scarf, and more.

There are also many clothing choices (mostly for women) that can be worn multiple ways to suit differing climate or style requirements. One of my current favourites is the Chrysalis Cardi by enCircled.

Fly Quick-Dry

You'll probably end up having to hand-wash something at some point. (See my note on Ziploc bags below for how to make this easy.) Your travel wardrobe should be comprised largely of items that can air-dry (inside) in less than 24 hours, ideally overnight. Quick-dry clothing has the added benefit of being light-weight. Buy Wrinkle-Free

No matter how carefully you roll or fold (see below) your clothing, if it wrinkles you'll continually look dishevelled, or you'll continually be in search of an iron. (And really — who wants to iron when they travel?)

Try a wrinkle-test on each item before you pack it: Bunch some material up in your fist for 5–10 seconds, then let it go. If if doesn't hang out satisfactorily, don't bring it.

Luggage

Your luggage is your home on the road (or at least in-transit). If you're traveling at a fast pace you might never have a chance to unpack. Thus, your luggage is a very important help — or hindrance — to your trip.

Not Too Big

The larger your luggage bag is, the more stuff you'll try to pack into it. Then the heavier it will be, and all the more onerous to schlep through airports, on to buses, trains, up stairs, etc.

Choose luggage that suits your needs without being too big. If you're intent on bringing back loads of souvenirs, then pack a second bag that can be filled and checked separately on your return. Commingling lots of souvenirs with your luggage only confuses and elongates the re-packing process every time you move on.

Dividers and Separate Compartments

Things get lost in a big shell of a bag with no way to separate or organize your belongings. Even simple functions like elasticized mesh along the sides and separate zippered compartments will help you to easily find what you need, when you need it.

Easy Transport Options

Your exact luggage preferences will depend on the nature of your trip. If you plan on scaling mountainsides and camping, then a well-fitted backpack will be best. If you're staying in hotels and sightseeing, a more traditional suitcase might suit you better.

Wheels are essential for me; without them I get frustrated lugging heavy bags along in airport lineups, and walking any distance without wheels is laborious. For added versatility, I tend to travel with a wheeled backpack.

Packing Tips

You might end up packing and unpacking your luggage a few times throughout your trip. Thus, this process needs to be quick and easy.

Everything Has Its Place

Establish a packing system and stick to it. This way you won't constantly waste time rummaging through your luggage looking for something and wondering if you lost it.

Roll Clothing

By rolling your clothing instead of folding it, you can fit more in, access what you need easily without disrupting everything else, and often reduce the wrinkle-factor as well. (See also: Roll Don't Fold, and 10 Other Tricks for Packing Fast)

Wrap and Stuff

Stuff anything hollow (such as shoes) with small items like socks and trinkets. If you have delicate or breakable items, wrap them in heavier clothing for protection. (See also: Vacation Hack: 7 Tips for Single Bag Travel)

Keep Liquids Together

If you're flying with carry-on luggage only, keep your liquids together (sealed in a Ziploc bag to prevent leakage disasters) and pack them at the top of your bag for easy access, so you can cruise through the airport with grace. (See also: How to Get Through the Airport Faster)

Helpful Accessories

Here are a few more tools to make packing a dream.

Mesh Bags/Packing Cubes

As you'll note in my ultimate carry-on packing list, mesh ditty bags and packing cubes are very useful for organization. Packing cubes aren't particularly space-savvy, but the minimal extra bulk is a negligible trade-off for invaluable extra organization.

Plastic Bags/Ziploc Bags

I generally have a few plastic bags and Ziploc bags at the ready. Plastic bags are good for dirty laundry, wrapping up shoes, containing wet things, and lots more. Ziploc bags can securely separate and contain your liquids, protect documents and souvenirs, and even double as hand-washing tools if you fill them up with soap and water and shake them with small items of clothing (like underwear and socks).

Hoboroll

This little gem of a packing aid is a new — and indispensable addition — to my travel entourage. The Hoboroll separates, organizes, and compresses your stuff. I keep a ridiculous number of miscellaneous items from undies to exercise wear to hard drives to scarves and more, all well organized and compressed to a fraction of its former bulk. It makes traveling with carry-on luggage a dream.

Bonus Tip: Take Notes
