Sometimes you're lucky enough to receive coupons via email from your favorite retailers; sometimes you have to take the time to scour the Internet, searching far and wide for a deal that can help you save. And of course, there are times when you come up short; no matter what you do, you just can't seem to find a coupon for a particular online store. (See also: Money-Saving Tips for Online Shopping)

What are your options?

Rather than pay full price, here are some tips to improve your chance of securing that elusive coupon for that particular store.

Review the Store's Website

Did you know that some stores offer coupon codes right on their websites? This may sound obvious, but many people continually overlook this simple idea. Check the homepage or a "coupon" page before you start shopping.

Fill Up Your Online Cart and Abandon It

Try this trick. Fill up your cart with all the items you want, and then leave the site behind for a couple of days. If you are signed into your account when doing so, the store may contact you with a coupon code to "tempt" you into visiting the site once again and finally checking out. (See also: How to Save 10-20% on Online Purchases)

Check Multiple Coupon Sharing Websites

Online services such as RetailMeNot (or Wise Bread's Coupon Search) dedicate a lot of time, money, and resources to helping consumers save money. Regardless of the store at which you're shopping, there's a good chance that one of these websites will have at least one coupon code. If you're lucky, you will find several codes, giving you the opportunity to compare each one to ensure that you are getting the best deal possible.

Search Internet Forums and Blogs

Many consumers enjoy sharing money-saving coupons and tips with others. You may be surprised at what you come up with when you search for coupons for a particular store. Getting started is as simple as navigating to Google and beginning your search. For example, you could search the following phrase: "Pottery Barn coupon codes." There's a good chance this will lead you to at least one forum or blog providing an active coupon code.

Register for an Event

If you're an "advanced saver," this is a strategy to consider. Register for a fake event, such as a baby shower or wedding shower. Once the event date passes, the retailer may send you a coupon code to purchase the items that others did not buy for you — which is all of them since your event is make believe. It takes some time to plan out this strategy, but in the long run it can save you a lot of money.

Hit Social Media and Ask

When I can't find a coupon code online after a lengthy search, I often reach out to the retailer directly through Facebook or Twitter and ask if there's one available. On more than one occasion, the retailer in question has responded to my message and provided me a coupon code. Easy-breezy. (See also: How to Make Facebook Productive)

Join the Store's Mailing List

Do you ever wonder why stores ask you for your email when checking out? It's not because they want to sell your address to spammers. It because they want to stay in touch with you in the future, which includes sending out special offers and coupons.

Remember, you can always unsubscribe to the list if you desire. You might as well try this out with your favorite stores to see what they offer those who are part of their mailing list.

Do Receipt Surveys

You may think it's annoying when a store associate directs you towards a survey at the bottom of your receipt, but once you realize the benefits you will be singing a different tune.

Recently, a friend of mine purchased a pair of shoes and then gave me the receipt so I could complete the survey and receive a coupon code. It took a couple minutes of my time, but the $10 off was well worth it.

Don't Be Afraid to Call (or Chat)

Have the strategies above left you empty handed? If so, there is one last thing you can do: Pick up the phone, and ask for a coupon code. Don't be shy about taking this step, as many stores are more than willing to help you out. (See also: 9 Ways to Get What You Want From Customer Service)

Before you do this, however, put all the items you want to purchase in your shopping cart. This will give you an idea of your total cost, which should help the store supply you with the appropriate coupon.

When it comes time to contact the store, there are multiple ways of doing so. In this situation, the best option is a "live chat," if available. This gives you the opportunity to connect with a live representative while your items are ready for checkout.

If you do not have the ability to start a live chat, there are a couple other options:

Call the customer service department

Contact the store via email

If you want to place your order now, without delay, you should make a phone call. Sending an email is an option to consider, but it can take up to 24 hours (or longer) to get a response.

It is always possible that you will run into a brick wall, never securing a coupon for the store at which you are shopping. But before you give in, implement the strategies above. Hopefully one of these will turn up a money-saving coupon!

Do you have more ways to get a coupon for an online store? Do you ever leave it blank? If you do, then you’re paying too much.

Here's how to make sure you never leave that box blank again, along with some tips to maximize your online coupon usage.

Ever since Paul wrote about RetailMeNot, I’ve faithfully used it as a resource in my dedication to save money on online orders. But when unable to find applicable coupons on the site (which has happened a lot), I used to shrug my shoulders and pay full price.

Whoops.

Paying full price was entirely unnecessary. Between a host of other online coupon providers and knowing how to do a proper search for online coupons, you never need to pay full price again. (See also: Save Money Shopping Online With Google)

Online Coupon Tips

Coupons are free!

If you are asked to register your private information or pay to get your coupons, then you’re barking up the wrong tree.

Read the fine print.

Check to make sure the coupon hasn’t expired and that your intended order fits the criteria (such as minimum order amounts).

Think before you buy in-store.

Although it may be tempting to slap down your credit card for that item while you’re in the store and looking at it, you might be able to score a better deal if you order it online. Between store e-promotions and online coupons, even shipping can be free or negligible. Besides, comparison shopping online allows you to really make sure you want or need that item and stave off impulse buys.

Combine coupons.

Although the fine print might exclude you from using more than one coupon, some retailers allow you to “stack” coupons to maximize your savings. 25% off plus free shipping? Yes, thank you.

Where to Find Online Coupons

In addition to RetailMeNot, here are a few other sites to check out:

PromotionalCodes.com

PromotionalCodes.com is an interactive site that allows users to post coupon codes and comments, rate coupons, and otherwise hunt for bargains. In a quick browse, I found $25 gift cards for $2, free shipping offers, and hotel discounts.

CouponWinner.com and Coupon Winner.ca

CouponWinner.com offers online coupons for heaps of major retailers — over 25,000 coupons from over 11,000 retailers to be precise. You can use their CouponScout to compare coupons and sales from different retailers side-by-side (very handy), and the InsideScoop section will give you the dirt on new products.

CouponWinner.ca is the Canadian equivalent for CouponWinner, and a welcome addition in my mind, since so many online coupons are geared solely towards the US market.

FreeShippingCoupons.com

FreeShippingCoupons.com is just as it sounds: a collection of free shipping coupons.

Codes.co.uk

Codes.co.uk allows UK residents to get in on the online coupon game.

If all else fails, you can perform a direct Google search for coupon codes. Simply enter a search string like “retailer + coupon" (or "retailer + promo code" or "retailer + coupon code" — try a few options) and see what comes up. (Substitute the word "retailer" in this example with the actual store name).

What are your tips and tricks for hunting down online coupons and saving money on online orders?

This article is from Nora Dunn of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Let that marinate.

I’m not a fan of coupons as a way to save money because I’m a big opportunity cost type guy. Time spent clipping coupons and scouring the aisles of a store for products that may or may not be there just seems like another pastime that produces silver hairs in the curly black crop.

There is also the social stigma, which is mostly self-imposed. You know, the vision of the old lady taking all day, unfurling coupons for cat food as if she has a royal flush — the checker reads them and weeps — placing them down on the counter. Maybe the person will even ignite an argument that usually starts with “well the coupon says…..”

But it’s the archetypal old lady that got me to thinking. Coupons actually do have a purpose, after all. According to NCH “Coupon Facts,” each year on average, coupons that provide savings for consumer packaged goods generate nearly $3 billion in America alone. Self-consciousness aside, there is something to be said for the coupon, especially in this economic climate, but it’s important to understand, well, what the coupon says — to you.

So I came up with five things — five seems like a shopper’s number, either that or I’m lazy, or both. Okay so yeah, five things to look for or at least consider when integrating coupons into your purchasing experience. These are the top five coupon coups.

Not their/there type

Nothing vindicates a cynic by being proven right that coupons can often be used as a marketing tool for the old bait and switch. This became all too clear when I clipped a coupon for free Thomas the Tank Engine toys for my all-things-transportation-addict toddler son (he’s a good kid but he joneses for trains and buses, choppers and planes what’dya gonna do?). So I get to the store before the so-called sale is even scheduled to start and every Toys ‘R Us within 24 miles is conveniently out of the particular trains listed on the coupon. The rationale is that having made the trip, you’ll buy Bertie, Gordon, Mighty Mac or Harold anyway because you’re there. They didn’t get my dough though.

When it comes to coupons, read the fine print carefully, call ahead and/or perhaps hold out for storewide coupons rather than individual items. After all, a store coupon is not the same as a manufacturer's coupon, which is not the same as a brand coupon, which is not the same as special promotions coupon. Also I find that coupons for important services — auto, grooming etc. — actually work better and can be leveraged with more pen-point accuracy than products that could be purposely or coincidentally out of stock.

Necessity

The first thing to ponder is whether you need four Swiffers for $4 even if it seems like a good deal. If you’re gonna spend time actually clipping coupons, be meticulous. Cross reference them with your needs. Something along the order of a price log with your grocery or essentials list. Plus nothing is more confusing or infuriating than finding out you bought those four swiffers when you could have got eight frozen French Bread Pizzas for the same price. You might be on some: “My kitchen is clean as the dickens but damn I’m hungry.”

Stick to the Code

Coupon discounts themselves come and go and you could get caught doing the old-school thing with scissors when you can simply hunt for discount codes that either correspond with the paper coupons or offer even more savings.

Consider the source

If you’re brand conscious (read baptized by marketing, maniac colors and powers of suggestion — say it with me WySssse-Brrrr-eaaad) consider going directly to the website of the brand you want for a one-stop shop on items you’re looking for.

Wait it out

For the particularly anal retentive coupon craver, keep a record. Whether you like index cards, a binder, laminated compartments in a leather bound book or chaotic coupon wall paper like an obsessed money-saver with a beautiful mind, track your most common purchases.

Coupons have come a long way since C.W. Post tried to slang his cereal with little pieces of paper to draw consumers in but with so many ways to educate ourselves about our wants and needs, you can save time and money as well as develop a system. Once you’ve stacked enough mozzarella on your monetary pizza you can elevate your status from clipper to connoisseur.

So ummm Pizza. Now that you have something to think about, how ‘bout you pick a brotha up some French bread pizza at the store? I’ll hit you back next Tuesday. Come on, you know I’m good for it. It says right here on this blogger’s coupon, matter of fact, read this post again for and get two more for free.

This article is from Jabulani Leffall of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Too many times, I take the time to research and locate the exact item I want, only to be sidetracked when getting my credit card or some other annoying step along the way.

One of those annoying sidetrackers is the search for coupon codes. Thanks to Jessica Okon's post, I knew RetailMeNot.com was a good place to search for them. But I still hated having to remember to visit the site before completing a transaction. And I hated forgetting to search for a coupon even more.

Now I don't have to remember. I downloaded Retailmenot's Firefox add-on, and now it whenever I'm visiting a site with an available coupon, it tells me. For instance, I just visited OneStepAhead.com, and a little gray bar appeared a the top of the screen telling me that 43 coupons are listed for the site, the top one being a 15 percent off deal that expires Friday.

If you don't have Firefox, you can still get in on some gadget action from RetailMeNot. They have a "bookmarklet" that is supposed to do something similar to the Firefox gadget, but I couldn't get it to work with Explorer. They also have gadgets for Google and Mac desktops.

And as an added benefit, if you're looking for frugal ways to help those less fortunate, for every gadget installed, RetailMeNot is donating a goat, calf, piglet, chicken or donkey through Oxfam Unwrapped.

This article is from Carrie Kirby of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
