It's possible to use airline miles for flights that could easily cost thousands of dollars apiece and with enough hotel points, you can book stays at luxury resorts that would typically be beyond your reach.

Like with most things, however, the devil is in the details when it comes to travel rewards. Not only are there travel-related fees you may need to pay, but there are also hidden travel expenses that can wreck your finances if you aren't aware they exist.

If you have a travel credit card or two and a big stash of points and miles, it's crucial to know about hidden taxes, fees, and expenses you'll need to plan for before any big trip. Here are the most common offenders to be aware of.

1. Government-mandated airline taxes and fees

Cashing in airline miles for a "free flight" can seem like a dream come true, but don't forget you'll have to pay government-mandated taxes and fees just like you would if you paid cash for your fare. While airline taxes only amount to $5.60 per person, per leg on domestic flights, you can easily be stuck paying a few hundred bucks or even more to redeem miles for certain international routes.

To avoid a nasty surprise, know about airline taxes and fees and price them out before you book your trip. Don't let these fees catch you by surprise, and they won't ruin your vacation.

2. Fuel surcharges

Also note that some airlines tack on huge fuel surcharges on their international award fares. British Airways is famous for doing this on their many routes, but particularly on itineraries that stop at London Heathrow. You may think you're getting ready to score a "free flight" to Europe with British Airways (or another airline that partners with British Airways), when suddenly, you're hit with hundreds of dollars in fees.

There's not much you can do about fuel surcharges, other than shopping around among different airline loyalty programs to find routes with minimal fees. However, this is also an argument for earning flexible rewards that transfer to more than one airline instead of a single airline currency.

When you have flexible rewards points you can transfer to other airlines or use to book flights with any airline through a travel portal, you can compare several routes and award fares to see how they stack up.

3. Parking fees

Even if you cash in flexible travel credit or hotel loyalty points for a free resort stay, you may be asked to pay for "extras" outside your nightly rate. One popular fee people complain about is parking, and especially compulsory valet parking fees.

If you plan to use hotel points or other travel rewards for a hotel stay and you happen to have your own car or a rental car, make sure to find out ahead of time if parking fees are assessed, and if so, how much they cost.

4. Resort fees

Hilton Honors is notorious for waiving resort fees on award stays. Plus, World of Hyatt Discoverist members (and those with higher elite status) enjoy waived resort fees on award stays.

However, not all hotel programs waive their resort fees — even for elite members. Before you book a stay with points with any resort, make sure to find out if they charge a resort fee and if you're required to pay it.

5. Checked baggage fees

Some airline credit cards offer a first checked bag free as a cardholder perk. However, you won't necessarily qualify for a free checked bag if you don't have a card that offers this benefit — even if you used miles for your flight.

If you don't have a co-branded airline credit card, in fact, it's likely you'll need to pay for any luggage you bring on your trip outside of a carry-on bag and personal item that fits under the seat in front of you. While checked bag fees vary, they will usually set you back around $35 per bag when you fly within the U.S.

6. Seat selection fees

Keep seat selection fees in mind — particularly if you want to choose your airplane seat ahead of time. Where some airlines will let you select a seat ahead of time without any charge, others — and particularly airlines based outside the United States — charge extra for seat selection up until 24 hours before your flight departs.

Also be careful if you wind up redeeming rewards for a basic economy fare. Not only will you be asked to pay extra to bring a carry-on bag on the plane with these fares, but you'll have to pay to select a seat, or accept whatever seat is given to you upon check-in.

7. Food spending

No matter where you're going or what's included, you'll probably need to spend some money on food during your trip. Even if you're visiting an all-inclusive resort you've booked with points, you'll need to eat when you're en route to your destination — and your meals may even be at the airport where food is notoriously expensive.

The bottom line: Make sure to budget for some meals and snacks during your journey, or you may regret it later.

8. Airport parking

Driving to the airport? In that case, you'll likely need to pay for airport parking on-site or somewhere in the general area. While long-term airport parking can cost as little as $7 or $8 per day at some airports, covered parking and valet parking can cost $25 per day or a whole lot more.

You can always take a taxi or call an Uber or Lyft for a ride to the airport to save on parking, but once again, there are costs involved. Have a plan to get to and from the airport so you can budget accordingly.

9. Rental car insurance

Finally, there's nothing better than renting a car with credit card rewards and enjoying the open road on somebody else's dime. However, you may be asked — or even required — to pay for pricey rental car insurance at the rental counter depending on your travel destination.

If you're visiting a country where additional insurance is optional, you can usually rely on your own auto insurance to cover you in the event of a wreck, damage, or theft. However, note that some credit cards offer primary rental car coverage for free as a cardholder perk.

Like this article? All you really need is a pair of good binoculars, right? But if you're a true bird nerd, you know that you won't be satisfied with just that. You can spend endless amounts of cash on outdoor hiking gear, GPS devices, notebooks, and bird identification books. And that's before you take into account the cost of guided tours in far-off destinations — some of which run several thousand dollars.

With all of these options, it's no wonder bird-watching is a multi-billion-dollar industry. However, here's the good news: There are plenty of world-class spots right here in the continental U.S. where you do some serious bird-watching for just the cost of the gas it takes to drive there. Here are some of the best budget travel destinations for bird-watching. (See also: 6 Cheap Date Ideas for Nature Lovers)

1. Kearney, Nebraska

If you've ever wanted to see the world's largest concentration of sandhill cranes, then Kearney, Nebraska's your best bet. Each spring, the town's population swells with over 650,000 birds — which is 80 percent of the world's sandhill crane population. They converge on the Platte River as they migrate through on their way to their northern breeding grounds. The sound of the birds trumpeting through the air is electrifying.

Even better, the Audubon Society and Kearney's visitor bureau pair up to put on a crane-watching festival each spring, full of free activities you can participate in, such as guided trips and a family crane carnival. Three-star hotels in Kearney run around $100 a night.

2. Roscommon, Michigan

At first glance, Roscommon wouldn't be your go-to vacation spot. It's a small town more than an hour's drive from Traverse City, which gets all the glory as one of Michigan's vacation hotspots.

But every June, the town brings birders out for a celebration of a very special tiny bird: the Kirtland's Warbler. This bird, averaging just a half-ounce in weight, is an endangered species, and boy, does it have a story. The Kirtland's Warbler flies to northern Michigan from Jamaica every summer, and only breeds in a specific species of tree of a specific height and a specific age.

Because of these strict requirements, the species started heading towards extinction, dipping down to just 400 birds in 1971. During this time they were only breeding in one county in the entire world — just outside Roscommon. Happily, the population is climbing back up today, and with a little luck, you can see these amazing birds each June before they head back to warmer climates. Everglades National Park, Florida

If you live in the snowy north, here's your best chance to see tropical birds like flamingos, egrets, and roseate spoonbills without shelling out for a plane ticket to somewhere more far-flung. All you need to do is make the one-hour drive from Miami.

It costs $25 for a seven-day pass into the park, but if you time it right, you might be able to hit one of their fee-free days (just expect a little more competition with other birders). Make sure to check out these birding hotspots within the park.

4. California's Central Coast

California is a veritable treasure trove of birds. In Monterey County alone, you can see nearly 500 different species of birds, but that's just the beginning.

If you drive an hour south to Big Sur, you may just spot a critically endangered California Condor — a prehistoric species of bird that is still being reintroduced into the area. These amazing birds can have wingspans nearly 10 feet across, and are the biggest land birds in North America.

5. Port Aransas, Texas

Texas might make you think of dry tumbleweeds and bleached cattle skulls, but coastal Texas is another story entirely. It's home to the state-designated Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, where you can view tropical birds like whistling ducks, ibises, and numerous varieties of shorebirds.

Even more interesting, Port Aransas is home to the only place in the world where you can see the last naturally-occurring flock of endangered whooping cranes up close in their natural environment. These birds are slowly crawling back from the brink of extinction after reaching a population low of just 21 birds in 1941. Even today, the species is still at high risk for extinction, with only 400 birds left from the last truly wild flock — all of which winter at Port Aransas. The Whooping Crane Festival, every February, celebrates migrant and resident birds with guided boat tours, guest speakers, and more. Olympic National Park, Washington

Olympic National Park is a bit out of the way, located on Washington's Olympic Peninsula. It's at least a two-hour drive from Seattle, and a three-hour drive from Portland. But once you're there, be prepared for an overwhelming amount of birds to find. This unique park encompasses three entirely different ecosystems — old-growth rainforests, alpine tundra, and ocean coasts — ensuring endless opportunities for spotting different types of birds.

If your eyes are sharp, you can spot birds like beautiful blue Steller's jays and woodpeckers among the forests. Head to the coast, and you'll see bald eagles and funky-looking rhinoceros auklets. If you climb up into the mountains, you might even spot a blue grouse. The only price required for this trip is a $25 fee for a seven-day car pass.

7. Acadia National Park, Maine

Who would pass up the opportunity to see real, honest-to-goodness puffins? At Acadia National Park, you can do exactly that. The colorful-billed birds are too far at sea to spot them from shore, though, so you'll need to take a boat tour during the summer months. Along the way you may see other ocean-loving birds like guillemots and ospreys. If you head inland, you can spot other interesting birds like snowy owls, Bohemian waxwings, and warblers galore.

If you arrive between late May and early June, be sure to check out the Acadia Birding Festival, which offers tons of interesting talks, and even bird-watching trips guided by local expert birders.

Like this article? The price of setting up tent in an established campsite can add up quickly and turn a budget getaway into a bank breaker.

Modern campsites can also feel a little too rigid — laid out like parking lots with minimal space between tents and crammed with fancy RVs. Having fantastic amenities like bathrooms, picnic areas, electricity hookups, and even Wi-Fi is great for some, but for other people it can almost negate the simple pleasures of escaping into the wilderness.

If you're after a more rugged adventure, then rest assured, it's entirely possible to find sweet spots to lay your head at night with absolutely no costs attached. With a little bit of know-how and forward planning, you can bag yourself a wilderness paradise virtually anywhere in the U.S. (See also: 10 Ways to Enjoy Fall Camping)

Seek out dispersed camping locations

Dispersed camping means wild camping, so you'll need to be willing to forgo all the amenities and facilities you'd find at a typical campsite. No bathrooms, no electricity, no running water, and no picnic tables. You will literally pick a spot in the great outdoors where you can pitch your tent without charge.

Many dispersed camping sites are in extremely remote locations, so don't count on being able to a get phone signal or mobile internet access. Because of this, you should always plan ahead by downloading a map of the area, or even carrying a paper one.

No matter where you camp, you should always follow the seven Leave No Trace principles and adopt the Tread Lightly policy. Both of these help to ensure the land you use when camping remains undamaged. Though you'll find plenty of developed campgrounds on BLM land, you can also do dispersed camping in many undeveloped locations. Ordinarily you can camp in these areas for up to 14 days, although this does vary from site to site, and in some places you'll need to secure a permit beforehand.

The easiest way to find a BLM campsite is to search for the state or location you're interested in on their Visit page. Once you find a suitable location, the information page will display camping details of the area. Some are more detailed than others, so if you have any remaining questions, you can call the number provided. The U.S. Forest Service helps preserve and protect these stunning wooded areas and the wildlife that lives within them. You are generally permitted to camp on National Forest land as long as it doesn't specify that you shouldn't, and there is usually a 14-day limit.

National Forest land is well marked on Google Maps, and the National Forest Service also has detailed interactive maps so you can narrow down your search by area and view all of the campsites within. Dispersed camping on National Forest land can be a great way to make a visit to a National Park cheaper as well, because many National Forests border National Parks. (See also: Camping for a Week Is Only $160 at These National Parks)

Check out National Wilderness areas

National Wilderness areas are dedicated regions of pristine landscapes that have been undamaged by human developments. While they are managed by the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Bureau of Land Management, they are different in that they are not allowed to be developed in any way, to preserve the beauty and untouched nature of the wilderness areas.

With over 750 designated National Wilderness areas covering over 109,000,000 acres of land, there are plenty of opportunities to camp. You can search on the Wilderness Connect website by name, state, on a clickable map, or by attribute. For more detailed maps, you'll need to contact the agency that manages it directly, and any questions about camping regulations for these sites should be directed at them as well.

Other resources

The most comprehensive listing of free camping sites can be found on the website of the same name, Free Campsites. It has an easy-to-use interface that enables you to search by location, and focuses on public land like the areas listed above. It's user-generated data, so it's continuously growing as people discover more great camping spots. And if you find an awesome place to camp, you'll be able to add it to the database as well. You can also filter them according to amenities, the kind of access they have, and the activities you can do in or around them.

Park rangers are also a great source of information on free camping sites, so if you're visiting a National Park and come across one, ask them to share a bit of insider knowledge. They are fellow lovers of the outdoors, and will be able to give you off-the-beaten-path destinations and hidden locations that may not be published anywhere else.

Like this article? I've also learned a thing or two about how to make the most of my budget while visiting them.

Budget travel isn't about always seeking the cheapest option. For me, it's more about getting the most for my money, whether that be accommodation, activities, or an evening out. Some destinations are downright cheap, while others provide unbeatable value for the kind of unique experience you can have there.

When it comes to getting a good deal, timing counts for a lot, as prices in most popular destinations fluctuate wildly depending on what time of year you visit. Even though summer can be the worst time financially to visit most places, for others, it's going to provide you with the best opportunity to keep your costs down. Here are my favorite budget summer destinations for 2018. (See also: 5 of the Safest Countries to Visit in 2018)

1. Grenada

Out of the 10 years that I've been traveling the world, two of them have been spent living in Grenada. Somehow I keep being pulled back to this tiny island in the West Indies. It's a hugely popular destination for cruise ships stopping to tour some of the nearby islands, but there's far more here to discover than could possibly be achieved in a few hours. From the stunning beaches and lush green landscapes, to the delicious food and lively nightlife, I can't get enough of this place. It's amazing that, despite its small size (the island is just 21 miles long), there are so many things to do in Grenada.

As with the rest of the Caribbean, late summer is actually a slow period with very few visitors due to it being the wet season. However, a little known secret is that Grenada lies just outside of the hurricane belt, meaning it tends not to get hit directly by the worst category five storms. You can expect around an hour of torrential rain each day, but other than that, it's blue skies and sunshine all the way. The only difference is, you have fewer tourists to share it with.

The Caribbean isn't your quintessential budget destination, and Grenada doesn't necessarily buck the trend in that respect, with some activities and daily costs on the expensive side. But it is possible to visit without draining your bank account by eating at locally run food outlets, and staying away from high-end resorts. I've found listings for rooms in mid-range hotels available for as little as $100 per night. (See also: 9 Simple Ways to Save on Hotel Stays)

2. Colombia

Just the mention of name Colombia strikes fear into the hearts of many people, thanks to its long association with the brutal drug trafficking cartels and guerrilla insurgencies that once brought the country to its knees. But Colombia has been working hard over the last couple of decades to shed that image, and it's finally beginning to see the results of all of that effort. In general, Colombia is now an extremely safe place to visit and it's cleaned up its act on multiple fronts, from toppling the most powerful drug cartels, to signing a peace deal with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in 2016. (See also: 4 Affordable Destinations That Are Safer Than You Think)

I recently fell in love with this country. Highlights include the many beautiful landscapes that encompass modern cities like Medellin and Bogota, the Caribbean coastline in popular destinations such as the colorful Cartagena, and swathes of untouched rainforest including a section of the Amazon.

The climate varies throughout Colombia depending on where you are, but it's always possible to enjoy sunshine and reasonable temperatures regardless of the time of year. Visiting outside of the peak months (between December and February) will mean cheaper prices and fewer crowds. If you can, skip the wet season in May, June, and July, and head there in late summer.

Round-trip flights to Medellin are available for around $300–$400 in the summer months with Miami, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale being the cheapest departure destinations. For less than $70 per night I've found mid-range rooms on Booking.com, with high-end rooms available for a little over $100 per night. (See also: 10 Flight Booking Hacks to Save You Hundreds)

3. Thailand

Thailand's tourist numbers have continued to soar as it has advanced from being a backpacker's haven into a full-blown behemoth of a tourist destination. In 2017, it attracted over 35 million travelers, and one of the reasons behind this success is that it caters to everyone, from those wanting five-star luxury to the more budget-conscious. It's one of only a few places that I've visited on numerous occasions, and somewhere I love each time I go, knowing I can live extremely well without spending a fortune.

July to October isn't the most popular time to visit because it's the rainy season, but coming at this time of year actually has its advantages. It's relatively easy to plan around the rain, and temperatures are still warm and welcoming. The lower visitor numbers also enable you to find cheaper prices on everything from hotel rooms to meals out, and there are far fewer crowds at even the biggest attractions.

In many ways, Thailand is the ultimate budget destination because basic living costs are extremely low, and even luxurious touches like spa days or cocktails in rooftop bars remain cheap. You can even enjoy a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant for $20, so good living is guaranteed even on a budget.

Flights to Thailand's capital Bangkok from Los Angeles with a stop are around $500 in summer. A room in a mid-level hotel will set you back around $60 per night with plenty of options available on Booking.com. (See also: 7 Countries Where You Can Travel on $30 a Day or Less)

4. Bulgaria

When the rest of Europe is flooded with tourists and hotel prices begin to soar during the summer months, Bulgaria remains delightfully affordable. This is still the country's busiest season; hotels and tours do book up, so it's worth planning ahead. But Bulgaria offers such excellent value that even in peak season you can travel on less than $50 a day. (See also: 5 European Cities You Can Visit for $50 a Day)

The ancient city of Sofia has plenty to offer visitors. The city's relics give visitors a glimpse at over 2,000 years of history, and the 1.2 million residents provide a thriving metropolis complete with a thumping nightlife, a great restaurant scene, and plenty of accommodation options.

For a bit of nature, head out to the Seven Rila Lakes area where there are countless hiking trails. The best time to visit this part of Bulgaria is in the middle of summer (July and August), when high temperatures hover around 75 degrees.

No trip to Bulgaria would be complete without a visit to Plovdiv, the nation's second largest city and arguably its most charming. Here you can head out to the stunning vineyards that pepper the surrounding landscapes, enjoy summertime wine festivals and concerts, and get lost in the labyrinth of ancient cobblestone streets. There are so many things to do in Plovdiv that you may find yourself extending your visit.

5. South Africa

South Africa is enjoyable at any time of the year. And while flights there are not cheap (round-trip airfare between New York and Cape Town starts at around $1,200 in July), once you get there, it's one of the cheapest destinations to visit thanks to a strong U.S. dollar.

Peak tourist season in this southern hemisphere nation tends to be during the summer months of December to March. June through August in South Africa is the dry season and winter. Prices are slightly lower during this period, but there's no shortage of things to do.

My wife and I visited in June and July, and while the Southern Cape region was a bit chilly, we had spectacular weather. June is the start of the whale watching season along the Cape south coast. This is when southern right whales can be best viewed by land from Hermanus as they come close to the rocky shorelines to give birth. When we were there, we were just a few hundred feet away from dozens of breaching whales and baby calves.

The drier climate means that July and August are the best months for viewing wildlife in South Africa's many national parks as they tend to congregate around diminishing waterholes.

September is the start of spring in South Africa. This is the time when flowers start to bloom across the Western and Northern Cape. And Namaqualand in the Northern Cape becomes carpeted in colorful flowers.

I recommend renting a car in South Africa and driving up and down the coast. There's really no better way to explore this naturally blessed nation!

Like this article? Before we can squeeze into our ever-shrinking economy-class seats, we often get a glimpse of the spacious business or first class seats when boarding. Some of the passengers sitting in these luxury seats paid the high ticket prices when they purchased the ticket (or when their company or client paid for it). But many are able to sit in these seats when they use their rewards points or miles, or when they've been upgraded by their frequent flyer programs.

Without a doubt, choosing the right travel credit card can make a huge difference in how quickly you’re able to rack up rewards to earn these coveted seats. (See also: Airline Credit Card or Flexible Rewards Card: What's the Best Way to Earn a Free Flight?)

But it also helps to know which airlines make it easiest for you to score business or first class seats using rewards. Here are the three I’ve found to be best. (See also: Best Airline Credit Cards)

Alaska Airlines

Alaska recently acquired Virgin America as part of its plan to continue growing service far beyond our 49th state. It also operates one of the best frequent flyer programs when it comes to upgrades. Any member can cash in miles for upgrades to premium economy and first class sections. If you've got elite status, you're eligible for free upgrades, and top-tier elites can even receive complimentary upgrades for themselves and a companion.

Alaska also earns a place on this list because miles are easier to earn on Alaska Air flights than on many other airlines. Alaska still awards frequent flyer miles based on the miles flown, a practice dropped in recent years by other airlines who have adopted a stingier system that awards frequent flyer miles based on the price paid for your ticket.

What's more, Alaska has 20 airline partners with whom you can earn miles or redeem them for economy, business, or first class seats. And you can use the Alaska Air website to book award upgrades on most of their partner airlines, including American Airlines, Air France, British Airways, KLM, and Qantas. (See also: Which Airline's Frequent Flyer Miles Have the Best Value?)

United Airlines

United is one of the better airlines when it comes to availability of full business class seat awards. You can also upgrade your economy class flights with miles, although you'll have to pay a cash copay for upgrades from most discounted fares. The amount of the copay in miles and dollars will vary based on the route, the fare class purchased, and your elite status. (See also: Which United MileagePlus Credit Card Should You Get?)

As an added bonus, 25 Star Alliance partners participate in United's upgrade awards service.(See also: 4 Tools That Help You Find Free Award Flights)

American Airlines

American Airlines is notoriously tight in making award seats available in any class, including business and first class. However, as a member of American's AAdvantage program, you can use miles to pay for available upgrades on American, British Airways, and Iberia flights. Non-elite members will have to make a cash copay to upgrade from discounted economy class, but not from full-fare economy or premium economy tickets.

Lucky enough to have elite status? You're eligible for free upgrades. Depending on which elite status you have, you may have to use a 500-mile upgrade for flights longer than 500 miles. You earn four of these 500-mile upgrades for every 12,500 elite qualifying miles you fly in a membership year. Or, elites can buy 500-mile upgrades for $40 each. So, before I left, I did some research and ended up writing about ways to enjoy Las Vegas without spending a lot of money.

While in Las Vegas, I found that some strategies to limit expenses worked well, but I did run into some spending pitfalls. Here is a summary of what worked, what didn’t, and what I would do differently on my next trip to Las Vegas.

Money successes in Las Vegas

Here's where I cashed in on the Vegas experience.

No shopping

Las Vegas features some expensive shopping opportunities at high-end stores and shopping malls that seem to cater to high rollers and provide an outlet for people to impulsively spend their gambling winnings. Fortunately, we managed to do some window shopping without buying anything.

Steering clear of buffets

We got in line for a breakfast buffet that was $30 per person. We came to our senses, got out of line, and found a less expensive diner nearby.

Walking instead of taxis

We used the inexpensive Las Vegas city bus to get from the strip to Fremont Street near downtown and back. On the strip, we walked everywhere. Bring comfortable shoes on your next trip to Vegas, because things on the strip are spread out and you will need to do a lot of walking if you don’t want to pay for transportation.

Saving on snacks

We brought a supply of inexpensive drinks and snacks to our hotel room that helped us avoid more expensive options on the strip and at the hotel. There was a CVS near our hotel that had some cheap drinks and snacks as well for when we needed more.

Scoring free souvenirs

On our excursion from the strip to Fremont Street, we got an awesome free souvenir: a photo at Binion's Gambling Hall and Hotel standing next to pile of $1 million cash! After the photo was taken, we came back after an hour to pick up our free printed copy. Taking pictures next to the other famous landmarks on the strip also made for great free souvenirs.

Leaving the kids at home

There were some sights in Las Vegas that were not exactly kid-friendly. I am glad we left our teenage kids at home. This saved us money on airfare and food, plus the kids were able to take care of the dogs so we could avoid pet boarding expenses.

Finding free attractions on the strip

We did end up going to an one expensive show featuring music and acrobatics, but it was a fun part of what Vegas is famous for. Other than that, we found a number of entertaining free attractions on the strip including the volcano light, fire, and sound show outside the Mirage hotel; the fountain light show at the Bellagio; lounging by pool at the hotel; and walking the strip to explore the sights during the day and at night.

Fremont Street

After staying at a hotel on the strip and spending some time there, we were ready to try something different. The Fremont Street experience is a 20-minute bus ride from the strip and features a huge overhead LED screen light show, plus live music and a variety of street performers. I got the cheapest dinner of the trip here.

Money lessons in Las Vegas

Now that I've been to Las Vegas, and can recognize the money traps, here's what I'll do next time.

Find cheaper airfare

We paid more for airfare by booking a flight to arrive earlier in the day on Thursday. We wanted to have more time to explore on our first day there. Taking a later flight would have been less expensive, and since Vegas never sleeps, there's plenty of time to explore even if we arrive later in the day. (See also: 8 Costly Flight Booking Mistakes You Make All the Time)

Engage in smarter gambling

I didn’t have time to study up and practice, so I stayed with video blackjack, video poker, and betting on a college-football game for my first time gambling. I lost $50 on all of these combined, which is OK. I chalked it up to entertainment.

But next time, I’d like to improve. I'll practice, take some blackjack lessons at a casino, and try playing against a dealer at a blackjack table before I go back. It would be great to win my $50 back!

Stay off the strip

Next time, I would consider staying at a hotel in the Fremont Street area instead of staying on the strip. For one thing, the odds at the casinos are better. For example, many casinos off the strip have low bet blackjack tables with 3:2 payout vs. the 6:5 payout that is typical on the strip. Another advantage of staying off the strip is that hotel rooms and dining can be less expensive.

Try unique dining opportunities

We ended up eating out for dinner every night. It's hard to avoid spending a lot on food when you're walking around the strip at night. You get hungry and everything is so far apart that you tend to give in and eat somewhere expensive nearby instead of hunting for a less expensive place. Some of the restaurants weren’t even that interesting. They seemed like upscale chain restaurants that you could find anywhere.

Next time, I would seek out unique local places. Someone recommended Battista’s Hole in the Wall, which has affordable dinner specials that include free house wine. The Ellis Island Cafe is another affordable local dining experience on my list to check out next time.

Like this article? And yes, there are lots of exciting places where prices are far lower than those in the U.S., but what if they're not the destinations you want to visit? What if your heart is set on experiencing places that are widely regarded as expensive, like Hong Kong, the U.K., or Japan?

It's an unavoidable fact that the cost of living in some countries is more than it is in others. With some solid planning and a few compromises here and there, however, it's possible to go virtually anywhere on even the most meager of budgets.

1. Choose the right neighborhood

You've probably heard the phrase "location, location, location," and nowhere is this more accurate than when traveling in expensive countries. Choosing the right neighborhood to stay in can save you huge amounts of cash, not only when it comes to accommodation, but also on things like transportation and grocery shopping.

Staying right in the heart of the most popular tourist district will always be the most expensive option. However, you usually only need to head a few blocks out to find a better value. Residential areas are ideal because they will have local stores, restaurants, bars, and cafes that aren't aimed at tourists, and therefore don't have the inflated prices that come with them.

When my wife and I were trying to decide where to stay in Rome, we ended up saving a lot of money by finding a beautiful hotel in a less popular area, which was still a short bus ride or a walk from major sites.

A quick internet search of the best budget areas near your chosen location will usually offer some good options. (See also: 8 Most Affordable Beach Towns in Mexico)

2. Find the cheapest accommodation

Accommodation will ordinarily take up the majority of any travel budget, and even more so in countries with a high cost of living. But it's possible to cut that down, or even eliminate it altogether. Couch surfing is a wonderful way to get free accommodation, with the added bonus that you get to stay with a local and see things from their perspective. Be aware that couch surfing is very competitive in expensive countries, so you'll need to contact hosts weeks, if not months, in advance to successfully secure stays.

House sitting is another brilliant, budget-boosting option that can land you in high quality accommodations for free. When you house sit, you’re typically looking after a person’s pets as well as their home. You’ll need to sign up with a couple of different house sitting websites and fill out profiles on each of them. You’ll usually be charged a fee for the service, but it’s worth it if you end up getting free accommodations.

If you're looking for more traditional ways to save money on accommodations, then consider Airbnb or one of its many alternatives, which can be cheaper than hotels or hostels. Airbnb is extremely flexible, so you can book everything from a room in someone's house to an entire apartment, depending on how many people you're traveling with. (See also: 13 Ways to Get Free Travel Accommodations)

3. Walk, bike, or take buses everywhere you can

Transportation is typically another high cost in expensive countries, but there are plenty of ways to save on this expense. The easiest way to cut down on transportation costs is to walk as much as you possibly can. It's completely free and a good way to get to know an area.

Renting a bike is a good way to go longer distances and is usually less than the price of a cab or public transportation. Many cities now have bike rentals that are both low cost and convenient, allowing you to pick up and drop off bikes at various locations.

For traveling farther afield within a country, consider going by bus. In places like the U.K. and Japan, trains are readily available but they come at a high cost. The equivalent journeys by bus can save you a significant amount of money, with trips available for as little as a couple dollars if booked early.

When I was in Japan in November 2017, I walked pretty much everywhere, and actually preferred it. In cities like Tokyo, where the topography is flat and there are broad sidewalks, walking was a fun and easy way to get around and see the local way of life. Even if it was a 40-minute walk to another neighborhood, I'd take on the challenge and was rewarded with views, brisk air, and interesting local experiences along the way. (See also: 8 Simple Ways to Travel Greener That Could Save You Money)

4. Take advantage of free activities

There's no need to spend money when you don't have to. Most places have regular events, attractions, and activities that you can take part in for absolutely nothing. It pays to do a bit of research on the location you're visiting beforehand to check out what will be going on while you're there. Good places to look are on local authority websites and local news publications online.

In larger cities like London, you'll find the majority of museums and art galleries have no entrance fees for their regular exhibitions. Tokyo has a number of viewing decks in skyscrapers with spectacular views over the city that are free to access. No matter where you are in the world, walking around a beautiful park or watching the sunset in the evening are great ways to spend time with no cost attached. (See also: 8 Free Things You Can Do on Any Vacation)

5. Travel during off-peak times

Even the biggest, most visited destinations in the world have lulls in their tourism. These lulls are like gold dust to the budget traveler, as attractions become far less crowded while prices for everything from hotels to restaurant meals drop. The savings can be the difference between being able to afford to visit and not. In my experience, I've found prices to be up to 50 percent lower.

It's important to do your research on the location you're visiting, though, because in some places attractions simply shut down outside of peak season. If your sole reason for visiting somewhere is for specific attractions that are closed during the offseason, no amount of savings will make up for that disappointment. (See also: Why Timing Is Everything When Saving Money on Travel)

6. Use rewards points and discounts

Travel rewards from credit cards, airlines, and hotels are the secret weapon of any savvy traveler, and can allow you access to places that may ordinarily be way out of your budget. They're particularly good to save up and use in expensive countries, and can make or break your travel budget. (See also: How to Use Travel Rewards to Get Free Trips)

You should also try and tap into as many discounts as possible, which can bring down the cost of everything from flights and accommodations to food and attractions. Check out local discount sites like Groupon, or even search whatever it is you want to get a discount on to see if there are any available online. For example, searching "local aquarium discount," can yield some amazing results.

Like this article? Often it's because of the fantastic and unique locations available, but sometimes even Hollywood producers are after a deal, and filming in a cheaper country can drastically slash a budget. Here are five famous film settings that just happen to be in affordable countries.

Tomb Raider — Angkor Archaeological Park, Cambodia

Angelina Jolie's Tomb Raider series famously features the breathtaking backdrop of the world's largest religious monument, the Angkor temple complex. The majestic ruins of this vast 12th century complex, and specifically the Angkor Thom temple, are an integral part of the film's plot and helped to cause a huge explosion in visitors to the site. The intricate religious carvings, the trees whose tangled roots seamlessly entwine the temple walls, and the sheer size of the complex defy belief.

A day ticket to the UNESCO designated park will cost you $37, but the relatively high entrance price is offset by the good value you'll get for your dollar elsewhere. Numbeo puts the cost of living in Cambodia at almost 37 percent lower than in the United States. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant is priced at just $2.65, and a double room in a midrange hotel can be found for as little as $10.

I've traveled in Cambodia extensively and I find it to be one of the best value destinations in the world. (See also: Amazing Destinations You Can Go to With Rewards Points and Miles)

Eat, Pray, Love — Bali, Indonesia

Though the film Eat, Pray, Love wasn't a critical success, it captured audiences' hearts and minds and went on to become a box office smash. This was in part thanks to the depictions of the various locations Julia Roberts' character finds herself in. Filming took place in Italy, India, and Bali, Indonesia, where protagonist Liz Gilbert finally finds true love and the inner peace she's been searching for. You can satisfy your own wanderlust by visiting some of the key locations in Bali such as the gorgeous Padang Padang beach, and the town of Ubud.

Bali (and Indonesia as a whole) is an extremely cheap place to visit, with the cost of living 45 percent lower than in the U.S., according to Numbeo. I've stayed in some lovely places in Indonesia and in my experience, for a room in a hotel that looks similar to the villa where Roberts stays in the film, you'll pay around $20 per night. Entrance to the Ubud Monkey Forest featured in the movie is around $3.75 and a meal at an inexpensive restaurant in Indonesia will cost you less than $2. For many, it managed to truly capture the magic and drama of this chaotic city. From the slums where the lead character Jamal was raised, to the scenes of the stunning Taj Mahal, the movie is beautifully shot. The closing scene where Jamal is finally reunited with Latika before they dance along with hundreds of extras was filmed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, one of India's busiest train stations.

Entrance as a foreigner to the Taj Mahal will cost you around $15, but many of the filming locations are public places so they won't cost anything to visit. Numbeo shows the cost of living in India at almost 65 percent below that of the U.S., with an inexpensive meal coming in at around $2.30. Midrange hotel rooms are priced around $30. You can also go on a walking tour around one of Mumbai's slums for around $13, where much of the profits go back into the local community. Kahlo spent the majority of her life living on the outskirts of Mexico City, so it's only natural that this is where much of the shooting took place. The famous Casa Azul, where she lived with husband Diego Rivera and eventually died at age 47, is a museum you can visit for around $12.

A day trip to the awe inspiring Aztec pyramids of Teotihuacan, where Kahlo and Leon Trotsky get to know each other in the movie, will cost you around $40 for an organized tour. It's also possible to reach them by public, and the entrance fee is just $4.

Numbeo puts the cost of living in Mexico at over 50 percent lower than in the U.S., with a meal at an inexpensive restaurant coming in at around $5. A midrange hotel room will cost around $30 per night.

The Beach — Koh Phi Phi Leh, Thailand

The Beach is credited with driving a huge amount of tourism Thailand's way, as it introduced the wider world to the secluded and unspoiled magnificence of the country's islands. The island of Koh Phi Phi Leh, where most of the movie was set and filmed, is now one of the most popular places to visit in Thailand. It's no longer the deserted lagoon that's portrayed in the movie, but it's still as charming as ever. Visitors flock to enjoy the warm turquoise waters that lap the golden beaches, as well as the renowned island night life.

Koh Phi Phi Leh isn't actually an inhabited island, but is part of the Koh Phi Phi archipelago, which includes Koh Phi Phi Don, where most visitors stay. From here you can book a day trip to Koh Phi Phi Leh, which is a half-hour boat ride away. A sunset cruise, where you'll encounter fewer tourists and get to witness the bioluminescent plankton in the waters once it's dark, costs around $50 per person.

The cost of living in Thailand is more than 36 percent lower than in the U.S., with an inexpensive meal costing less than $2, according to Numbeo. For a double room at a midrange hotel or guesthouse on Koh Phi Phi Don, you'll pay about $30.

Like this article? Without a spouse or partner to appease, you can travel when you want and where you want. And since you don't have to choose activities based on anyone else's tastes, you can pack your trips full of stuff you want to do.

Unfortunately, traveling as a single can be more expensive than it would be if you could split your costs with someone else. For example, a single hotel room usually sleeps two, but you won't get it for half the price of a double room.

If you want to travel independently, you should plan on paying what is commonly called a single supplement — a noted or hidden charge that arises from the fact you're traveling alone, since most travel arrangements are based on double-occupancy.

The good news is, a handful of travel ideas work better for singles, and there are even "singles vacations" created with the solo traveler in mind. If you're looking for a way to travel on the cheap without a buddy, here are some of the best inexpensive ideas to consider. (See also: 6 Unexpected Benefits of Solo Travel)

1. Go "couchsurfing"

If you're especially independent, why not go couch surfing? Yes, we actually mean hopping from one couch to another while you traverse the planet in pursuit of your travel dreams.

Couchsurfing makes it easy to book space on someone's couch nearly anywhere, while making valuable connections, and potentially even friends, within a community. The best part is, the hospitality offered through Couchsurfing.com is absolutely free, provided you are willing to meet your host's expectations as a guest.

You can find a couch or spare room nearly anywhere in the world, from Amsterdam to Zambia. This opportunity allows you to stay multiple places for free while having someone to connect with.

If you're worried about how safe it is to sleep on a stranger's couch for free, Couchsurfing.com suggests reading profiles and their reviews carefully on the website and only making selections you feel comfortable with. "If you're uncomfortable, keep looking," the website advises. It also suggests trusting your instincts and having a backup plan or knowledge of the nearest hostel/hotel wherever you're staying. (See also: 13 Ways to Get Free Travel Accommodations)

2. Opt for a singles cruise

While cruising is usually considered an affordable travel option, single travelers are often in a poor spot when it comes to booking cruises on a budget. Because cruise cabins are booked based on double occupancy, single cruisers are usually asked to pay for two people or for a "single supplement" charge to make up for the fact they're not sharing their cabin with anyone else.

Fortunately, special singles cruises have been set up to help cruisers mingle without all the extra charges. Some don't charge a single supplement, while others promise to match you with someone to share a cabin with.

Some singles cruises even set up special mixers or cocktail hours to help you meet a special someone. Discount cruise website VacationstoGo offers details on upcoming singles cruises — how much they cost, and how to book. (See also: 40 Most Useful Travel Websites That Can Save You a Fortune)

3. Select an all-inclusive resort made for singles

If you want a relaxing beach vacation with included activities and plenty of people around, an all-inclusive resort might be your speed. These properties include food, lodging, and entertainment for a single nightly rate, and are often very affordable if you're willing to shop around.

All-inclusive brand Club Med even offers properties that cater specifically to singles. At its Turkoise property in Turks and Caicos, for example, nightly rates for singles start at just $109 per night.

You can also find myriad all-inclusive properties for less than $150 per night in Mexico, Jamaica, and elsewhere in the Caribbean. Pick a property that caters to adults to increase your chances of meeting other solo travelers.

4. Become a housesitter

If you want to visit new lands and you love animals, becoming a housesitter might be right up your alley. TrustedHousesitters connects homeowners who travel with verified housesitters who will stay at their properties, water their plants, get the mail, and take care of pets.

While you don't typically get paid for these opportunities, you can get a free place to stay in destinations around the globe. Currently, you can find housesitting opportunities in places like the United Kingdom, Australia, Paris, and Austria. As a bonus, any pets you watch can help keep you company. (See also: 10 Tips for Landing the Perfect House-Sitting Gig)

5. Join a guided group tour

Guided tours can offer a convenient way to see some of the world's most amazing sights. Whether you're touring Greece's ancient ruins or joining a safari through Kenya's famous game parks, a tour can save you a lot of planning since the tour company irons out the itinerary and travel details for you. You'll also have the benefit of traveling with a knowledgeable guide and with a group, which may help you feel safer and less lonely.

Unfortunately, not all organized travel tours are best for singles, since many charge a double-occupancy rate whether you travel alone or not. It helps to seek out tours specifically for single travelers. Some of the most popular companies that offer this option (without a single supplement) include G Adventures, Tucan Travel, and Contiki, which focuses on travelers in the 18-35 age range.

These tours typically include not only your lodging and transportation, but some meals and activities, too. With G Adventures, for example, travelers can pick from tours like a seven-day Italy trip that includes lodging, transportation, food, and activities for $1,599.

6. Pick up a travel credit card

No matter where you're traveling, pick up an airline credit card or travel rewards credit card before you go. These cards let you earn points for every dollar you spend, and most offer a big sign-up bonus after you meet a minimum spending requirement within a few months of signing up.

Airline credit cards can be especially advantageous for the single traveler. While families may find it difficult to find more than one or two award seats on a flight, singles have the advantage of only needing one. This is especially true when it comes to airlines that only release one or two award seats at a time.

Like this article? And recent incidents of airline staff acting horrendously toward passengers haven't helped. However, the airlines aren't completely devoid of the ability to provide customer service. You just need to ask for it. (See also: Which Airline Credit Cards Are Best?)

Here are seven things that you might not have known that you could ask for from your airline.

1. Kids' amenities

Some airlines will go out of their way to make children and families feel welcome on board. For example, Air New Zealand offers a "Jet Cadets" kids' activity pack that includes toys, activities, and food just for kids. In addition, it offers a kids' channel on in-flight entertainment. On Lufthansa, my daughter received a little "pilot's suitcase" filled with toys and games. But often airlines won't provide these amenities automatically. If you are planning on traveling with children, you need to notify them in advance. (See also: 9 Things to Do if You're Traveling With Children)

2. A whole can of soda

How often have you actually sat down to drink a half a cup of soda at home? Yet most flight attendants usually just pour half the can over a bunch of ice and move on to the next customer, leaving you just a few sips of soda to quench your thirst. If you actually want the full can, all you have to do is politely ask your flight attendant, and you'll probably get it.

3. Another meal

On flights where meals are served, airlines have to over-cater the flight to give most passengers a chance of getting their first choice in meals. This means that there are usually many meals leftover and discarded at the end of a long flight. If the food is especially good, or you're particularly hungry, then there's no reason why you can't ask for a second meal. For the best results, I would first compliment the flight attendants on the meal, and ask if it would be possible to have seconds after others have been served. (See also: These 6 Things Will Make Your Flight More Comfortable)

4. First aid supplies

If you're in midair and have a strong headache, upset stomach, or just a nasty cut, you can reach out to the flight attendants for some basic medical supplies. They should be able to supply you with things like over-the-counter pain medications, antacids, and band aids. (See also: 15 Airport Hacks From Professional Travelers)

5. Additional airsickness bags

Airlines will stock their seat pockets with airsickness bags, for obvious reasons. In addition, airsickness bags are the preferred way to dispose of all sorts of other waste items including used tissues, dirty diapers, and soiled clothing. But when you actually need them most, you might not find enough of them in the seat pockets. Don't worry, the airline has a very strong interest in providing you with as many airsickness bags as you need, but you'll usually need to ask. (See also: Eat These 6 Foods to Stay Healthy While Traveling)

6. A doctor

If you or someone you are flying with has an urgent medical need during a flight, then you should contact your flight attendant and ask if there is a doctor on board. Airlines have established procedures for asking for passengers with medical experience. In most cases there will be a doctor or another medical professional on board. But even when there isn't, the airline is often able to consult with medical staff on the ground to evaluate passengers and possibly treat them with onboard supplies. And if you need more than that, the airline can land to give you emergency medical services.

7. A tour of the cockpit

I'm old enough to remember being taken to the cockpit in-flight, but that's no longer permitted on flights to or from the United States. However, many pilots welcome children's visits before or after the flight. In addition, some foreign airlines will still permit in-flight visits, so long as the destination is not the United States. Looking to explore new destinations without leaving the U-S of A? Shake things up this summer by stepping out of your comfort zone and see the country with these exciting summer travel ideas.

1. Set off on a surprise excursion

Recently I met the owners of travel company Pack Up + Go, and I was immediately intrigued when they explained what set it apart from other tourism outfits. The gist of their operation is that they plan three-day surprise getaways for their customers based on a few criteria — like travel budget, travel dates, preferences, and personal information — so they can book all your transportation and accommodations for you.

A week before you leave, you'll receive an email with the weather forecast for your secret destination, recommended items to pack (like bathing suits or down parkas), any luggage restrictions, and when and where to catch your transportation. A few days before your trip, an envelope arrives, and you are not allowed to open it, lest you ruin the fun. Inside the envelope that you shouldn't even peek in until you arrive at your transportation hub are directions to your accommodations and a curated list of recommendations for everything from cafes, to restaurants and night life, to rainy day activities.

While this may not be the ideal option for hot- or cold-weather adverse travelers — you get no say in where you end up (though the planners do take into consideration where you've already been) — Pack Up + Go is a fresh, fun option to explore a new area you may never have chosen to visit yourself.

2. Sleep over with Airbnb-style camping

I love Airbnb and camping, which is why I'm an early adopter of Tentrr, a new app-based travel service that helps connect would-be campers to property owners who have erected high-quality campsites on their properties with the help of the Tentrr crew. Currently there are 55 sites available, mostly in New York, which will certainly expand outside the state and across the country as the service gains popularity and continues to grow.

Adhering to the standard setup guidelines provided by Tentrr, each site includes a large canvas tent, generally equipped to fit five or six campers (though some sites allow up to eight campers); a fire pit, picnic table, five-gallon water container, outdoor camp toilet, queen size cot, metal grill, two lounge chairs, dry food storage, and an outdoor sun shower. All you have to do is bring the food, drinks, games, and whatever else you need to stay comfortable for a couple days in the great outdoors.

There are properties available to please every type of traveler, including those close to beaches, forests, meadows, ponds and lakes, rivers and streams, and breathtaking views of the surroundings. I personally booked a trip later this summer at a mountain hideaway with a private pond. Activities in the area included canoeing/kayaking, hiking, road biking, white water rafting, fishing, golf, wineries and distilleries, a local flea market, and more. Most sites are available for between $120 and $150 total per night. The price doesn't increase based on the number of campers; instead it remains a flat rate that you can split with your friends to make your trip an incredibly low-cost, but memorable getaway. (See also: 5 Ways to Save on Your Next Glamping Trip)

3. Hit the road on a rental motorcycle

You'll never get me on a motorcycle (I can barely operate an electric can opener without hurting myself), but if you're a dedicated biker EagleRider, the world's largest motorcycle tourism company, can help you achieve your sightseeing goals. With your monthly membership in Club EagleRider ($29/month, plus a $29 sign-up fee), you receive one free rental day and free or discounted rates on additional rental days.

4. Cross the country via train

I had almost given up on rail travel because of the increasing prices — trips from my home in Manhattan to visit my family in Baltimore were sometimes over $300 round-trip, compared to below $50 for a round-trip bus ride — but when I heard about supersaver Derek Low's four-day $429 cross-country rail trip, starting in San Francisco and ending in New York City — the idea was worth revisiting. Thanks to his 15-day, eight-ride Amtrak rail pass, Low efficiently traveled from coast to coast in less than 96 hours — and enjoyed sightseeing at a few cities in between, like Denver, Salt Lake City, and Chicago — while still having several trips remaining on his pass to visit a few more quick destinations on his way back out West.

If you don't plan to make any stops, however, and just want to observe nature from the comfort of your train car, you can shave a couple hundred dollars off what he spent to bring it down to about $213, according to Low's account of his adventure. If you don't think you're savvy enough to score these deals on your own, Low offers to arrange your entire trip for you for a fee of $49. (See also: 5 Fun, Affordable Train Trips)

5. Deliver cars, campers, and RVs to their owners

Did you know that you can save a ton of money and subsidize your road-based vacation transportation costs by renting RVs, campervans, motor homes, and cars for as low as $1 day? Rental site imoova.com works with traditional rental companies to offer its customers one-way travel opportunities to desired locations. How can that be, you ask? Simple. You're not just embarking on your own travels; you're also helping the rental companies save money on hiring expensive drivers to return the vehicles back to their home bases by doing it for them.

If you're considering a road trip this year, check imoova to see what you can come up with. The hundreds of dollars you could save will leave you with more money for better dinners, a couple more drinks, and more exciting activities along the way.

6. Self-tour a new area on foot

If you like to investigate new cities and neighborhoods on foot, download the Sidewalk app to tap into a free library of city walks that you can do on your own time. These insider-curated walks provide a local's perspective on your surroundings (they're created by the very people who live there) giving you the money-saving freedom to be your own tour guide. The app just launched this spring, but it already contains 60 walks you can enjoy in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle, with more cities coming soon.

7. Follow the beaten paths

When you prefer the seclusion and meditative opportunities of nature, enlist AllTrails as your travel companion. The free web- and app-based service gives you access to 50,000-plus trail maps (hiking and running) along with directions directly to the trailhead from wherever you are. You also can filter trails by difficulty, distance, rating, amenities (like waterfalls), and identify kid- and dog-friendly trails. When you're done, leave a review and share photos of your experience to enhance the experience for others.

8. Challenge your mental and physical abilities

Unlike many other fitness challenges, which last a few hours or less, Cotopaxi Questival is a 24-hour adventure series that turns this sometimes-hardcore genre into a community-driven social event.

Teams of two to six are tasked with hundreds of challenges over the 24-hour period, from Foodie (eat a taco with no hands), to Community (send a postcard to a veteran, or pick up trash at a local beach), to Adventurous (camp under the stars, run a mile in fancy dress), and more.

There are 50 locations all over the country from which to choose that are held individually throughout the year. Challenges can change to suit the location, too, so you won't know what's coming your way until 24 hours before your own event.

Like this article? For one low price, you can secure your room on the ship along with all your meals and certain types of entertainment. And if you can avoid airfare by driving to the port of departure, you can save even more.

Many cruise lines offer added perks like supervised kids' clubs, nightly shows, and formal dinners to lure families in. Special amenities and activities mean families can get more bang for their buck. Several cruise lines in particular make it easier for families to save, with kid-friendly policies or rates, and cheaper cruise fares over all. (See also: Best Credit Cards for Cruises)

1. MSC Cruises

Mediterranean line MSC Cruises offers seven-night Caribbean cruises starting at $399 per person. Many packages also come with onboard credits and free Wi-Fi. But families with kids score even more when it comes to affordability. Unlike some other cruise lines that charge full or reduced fares for children, MSC Cruises has a "kids sail free" policy for some cruises.

The fine print states:

"Kids 11 and under at time of sailing cruise free on select sailings. Kids must sail as third/fourth guests when sharing a stateroom with two full-fare paying adults to qualify to cruise for free."

On cruises where kids sail free, the cruise line notes, families are still responsible for taxes and port dues.

Although MSC Cruises is a European cruise line, it offers several cruises departing from Miami. On the MSC Divina, for example, you can cruise from Miami to the eastern Caribbean, or choose an itinerary that makes stops in both Central and South America. (See also: Are All-Inclusive Vacations and Cruises Worth the Money?)

2. Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival offers a wide range of cruise itineraries from various ports in the U.S., with fares as low as $279 per person. A quick, four-day cruise in August out of Mobile, Alabama, for example, sails the western Caribbean with a stop in Cozumel, Mexico for just $309 per person for an interior room.

Kid-friendly amenities depend on the ship, but can include water parks, arcades, and splash pads. All Carnival cruises offer a supervised kids' club (for free) to give adults time for a break or a trip to the onboard casino. (See also: The 13 Craziest Cruises to Sail the High Seas)

3. Norwegian Cruise Line

Kids can occasionally sail free on Norwegian Cruise Line. On certain 2017 and 2018 trips, third and fourth guests can sail free with two paying adults.

Prices start at around $369 per person for a three-day cruise from Miami to the Bahamas. Some of the shorter cruises even come with money-saving amenities like unlimited open bar and onboard credits of up to $500.

Kids and parents can enjoy myriad onboard experiences, from award-winning shows, to onboard aqua parks, to bowling or mini-golf. Norwegian also offers supervised kids' clubs for youngsters, including the Splash Academy for ages three to 12, and the Entourage club for teens aged 13-17.

4. Holland America Line

Holland America Line is a family-friendly cruise line aimed at offering good value for families. Its Caribbean cruises from the U.S. can be especially affordable, with six- or seven-night itineraries starting at $699.

Even its Alaskan cruises are affordable, despite the area's reputation for high prices. The seven-day Glacier Discovery Southbound cruise departing from Seward, Alaska, for example, starts at just $399 per person for an interior room.

Holland America Line offers plenty of onboard entertainment and enriching activities for families. Depending on the cruise you book, you can find options such as spas, arcades, pools and waterparks, and nightly shows.

Parents with kids can also buy some free time by checking their kids into Club HAL, a supervised club for children ages three to 17. Entry is free.

5. Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is another line that lets kids sail free on select cruises. On other cruises, it has promotions that make it affordable to bring children along. Its current promotion offers 60 percent off a second guest, for example.

Using that promotion, a four-night Bahamas cruise out of Miami starts at just $246 per person. Keep in mind, however, that your third and fourth guests (including kids) are full price.

In terms of the onboard experience, Royal Caribbean's offerings depend on which cruise and ship you choose. Some ships feature rock climbing walls, zip lines, and onboard arcades. All feature swimming pools to keep the kids busy, and some have water parks as well.

All Royal Caribbean cruises offer supervised entertainment for kids while the adults play on their own. The kids' club is open to children ages three to 12, while a teens' club offers activities perfect for older kids up to age 17.

How to save even more on cruises

While cruising is already known as an affordable option for families, you can save even more by shopping for deals. All the cruise lines mentioned above and many others change their promotions regularly.

Never assume a specific cruise line is cheaper because kids sail free or they're offering 50 percent off. Compare specific promotions for the itinerary you want, then look for the best final price after all promotions have been added. Also take into account any extras, such as drink packages or onboard credits, that are being offered on a particular cruise.

Finally, check out VacationsToGo.com if you're looking for a last-minute cruise. The site promises that if you book within 90 days of departure, you can save up to 82 percent. Better yet, those discounts can apply to all available cruise lines, ranging from luxury brands like Princess down to the lower-priced cruise lines mentioned here.

Like this article? The great thing is, many of them are affordable. That's especially true these days for Americans carrying U.S. dollars, since the exchange rate is so attractive now. Here are eight of the most affordable Mexican beach towns to visit, plus why you should go.

1. Loreto

Situated on the Baja California Peninsula, Loreto offers more than a cool splash in blue waters. It's also home to the centuries-old church, Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto, and prehistoric cave paintings at the Sierra de la Giganta mountain range.

Beach-lovers can see pelicans, dolphins, and whales off the coast around Bahía de Loreto National Park. If you come in spring, you may also catch the migration of whales. For those after a little more active vacation, there is plenty of snorkeling and sport fishing, too.

Best of all, three-star hotels in Loreto start at just $50 per night. (See also: Caribbean Island Vacations Anyone Can Afford)

2. Mazatlán

Referred to as the Pearl of the Pacific, this resort town boasts 11 miles of boardwalk that promises lovely strolls along the sea. Mazatlán is also known for gorgeous architecture, friendly locals, a rich history, and a world-renowned night life district called Zona Dorada (Golden Zone).

A fun to-do list could include visiting the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in the historic part of town, dropping by the Zona Dorada to mingle with fellow tourists, and catching breathtaking sunsets.

Like surfing? Mazatlán is known as a surfing haven because of its enormous waves. In addition to its water-related activities, Playa del Carmen is also world famous for its restaurants and night life. At night, catch Mayan dance performances and free salsa classes while perusing the shops on the city's famous strip, 5th Avenue.

For warm weather and fewer tourists, you may want to visit in April and May. Three-star hotels near the beach start at $50 per night. Whether you’re going to the beach, the lake, the mountains, or “The Happiest Place on Earth” (at least from the kids’ perspective), summer vacation can be expensive. It also can put you at risk for theft — both of your personal belongings and your identity.

According to Experian, the average per-person cost of a vacation is $2,275, and half of this expense is put on a credit card. Planning ahead, setting a budget, and saving money in advance are essential for a debt-free vacation. Even after putting in the time and effort to start a vacation fund at the bank, using credit can be a smart financial choice. Here are seven ways using credit as a financial tool during your summer travel can help you have a safer, less-expensive vacation without taking on debt.

1. Convenience

Figuring out foreign currency can be like Harry Potter counting Muggle money. Using a credit card can eliminate uncomfortable stares from the locals, who you know are thinking, Yup, they’re tourists, while you and yours hold up the line deciding whether the gold coin with the lady on it or the silver coin with the man is the right change. A credit card can also automate the calculation of exchange rates. Look for cards that don’t charge a foreign transaction fee. Finally, credit cards hold up much better than cash when you drop your wallet in the pool.

2. Travel insurance

Some credit card agreements provide travel insurance when you book flights or hotels. You’ll be glad you didn’t reserve those nonrefundable tickets with cash when the hurricane blows through two weeks before departure and takes your hotel with it.

3. Purchase discounts

Branded credit cards may offer discounts for purchases on the resort property or in stores and restaurants in the area. The right logo or cute cartoon character on the card can leave you with a little extra cash in the bank back home.

4. Rewards and incentives

Airline miles, hotel points, and cash back can add up quickly on a cross-country road trip or overseas vacation. Using a credit card could put a bit of money back in your savings account, get you a free room for a night, or earn a seat upgrade on a long overnight flight.

5. Identity theft protection

Your identity may be your most valuable possession. Using a credit card for vacation purchases will protect you when your identity is compromised. Because losses due to fraud are limited to $50, if your identity is stolen while on the road, you won’t lose any cash. In most cases, even the $50 is waived by the credit card company.

6. Theft deterrence

Want to put a bullseye on your back? Pull out a big wad of cash in a crowded vacation spot. Flashing loads of lucre can make you a prime target for thieves and pickpockets. Eliminate bulging pockets and use a credit card instead of cash. If you do have your pocket picked, simply call the credit card company to have the account blocked and a replacement card delivered to you.

7. Expense tracking

Using a single credit card for all your vacation purchases can be a good financial management tool. Designating a single card will give you a complete record of your expenses when you get home — in the form of your monthly statement.

You might also consider applying for a new card expressly for your summer vacation. That makes expense tracking even easier — any spending on the card is automatically "vacation spending." If you choose your vacation card carefully, you may be able to boost your rewards and savings, too. Before applying, check your Experian credit report and score. Knowing what’s in the report will ensure there aren’t any surprises when you apply.

Of course, you can’t just charge it and forget it. You still have to monitor your spending along the way, stick to your budget, and use your vacation savings to pay the balance in full when you get home. But if you use credit wisely, you may be able to leave a bit in the account to use next year.

Like this article? It's important to look for places where the dollar is doing well, or maybe somewhere you can get a package deal that includes your flight and hotel. If you're looking for a cheap — but still awesome — getaway for the fall, here are some places you should look into. (See also: 6 Easy Ways to Get Free Travel)

1. Greece

Though it can still cost a lot to stay on one of the more famous islands like Santorini, Greece's economic issues make it one of the cheaper places to stay. Ferries run between islands — if you want to check all of them out — but there are tons of cheap things to do in Athens, too. And that's probably what you're going to want to see when you're traveling to Greece.

2. Cambodia

Cambodia is one of the cheapest places to visit, and it's filled with amazing things to see. Angkor Wat alone has so many temples and so much ground to cover, you might need more than just a day pass to do it. And that's only one of the sites this country has to offer. With its low prices and attractions, you'll get your money's worth here.

3. Camping Somewhere Stateside

If you feel like staying in the states, there's bound to be an awesome camping destination within a few hours of you. Hiking, fishing, and just being in the middle of all nature has to offer is an amazing thing. If you really want to rough it, tent sites are usually cheaper. But if you want something a little bit sturdier, log cabins are the way to go.

4. Dominican Republic

If you want a Caribbean vacation that doesn't hurt your wallet, the Dominican Republic is your perfect spot. It's a great place for an all-inclusive vacation. Some hotels have multiple pools, bars, and gourmet restaurants that are included with the price of your stay. Activities like golfing, scuba diving, and parasailing come with additional fees — and the resorts can book those adventures for you.

5. Puerto Rico

Another decently priced tropical destination, Puerto Rico is great because the flights are cheap and they use the US dollar for currency. Avoid the touristy areas if you want to get your money's worth. Hit up the west coast of the island for amazing beaches and smaller crowds.

6. Vietnam

Though it's becoming more popular, Vietnam is still cheap and beautiful. If you go while budgeting, you can get by on less than $40 a day. Since most of the country is pretty underdeveloped, it's a great place to backpack and go on a true adventure. If you're not into that, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are the more popular tourist destinations.

7. Bolivia

One of only two landlocked countries in South America, Bolivia is often overlooked. The city of La Paz is a unique place that blends modern life with indigenous traditions, and it's full of activities that aren't to be missed. And if you venture away from the city, you can see more of the indigenous and religious culture you can't experience anywhere else.

8. San Diego

Unlike Los Angeles and San Francisco, it's a lot easier to get a bargain here. Beaches are your best bet, with miles of boardwalk and coastline to be explored. The Coronado Ferry is pretty cheap to ride, and it lets you see the sites from a different perspective. If you have a bit more money to spend, take in one of the famous destinations here, like the San Diego Zoo.

9. Bulgaria

Another frequently overlooked destination, Bulgaria has some of the most deserted beaches in Europe. It also boasts old towns to explore and mountain ranges to trek. It's been influenced by multiple cultures, so you'll see a unique blend of things here that make it a must-see destination. There are a ton of gorgeous monasteries and churches if you get tired of being on the beach all day.

10. Ireland

Travel to Ireland has gotten cheaper in recent years, and it's a deal worth jumping on. With Dublin being a big city, it can be more on the expensive side for things like food, but there are still plenty of free things to do to fill your time. Journey out to the countryside for some amazing views and cheaper places to stay — though you might want to rent a car to fully experience everything this country has to offer.

You can still travel to some of the most amazing places in the world while on a budget. Go to places less-traveled, plan ahead to find cheap flights and hostels, and make the most of the spending limit you have. There's nothing wrong with going off the beaten path to see something awesome!

What are some other cheap fall destinations?
