It's incredibly easy to make purchases with your credit card, which can be both its greatest strength and its most profound weakness.

But rather than seeing credit cards as an enemy of your budgeting efforts, consider all the ways your cards can actually help you to manage your financial life. Try thinking of your credit cards as incredibly powerful financial tools that can be harnessed to achieve your goals.

Here are five ways that your credit card can help you manage your finances.

1. Keeping records

One of the great things about both credit cards and debit cards is that they can offer you a record of every transaction you make. Your statements include the merchant name, the date of the transaction, and the amount. So if you ever wonder where your money is going, this is one way to find out in great detail. (See also: Top 7 Reasons I Use My Credit Cards for Everything)

2. Paying taxes

The record of all your payments can be vital when it comes time to complete your taxes. Your credit card statements can help you to identify and claim charitable contributions and other deductions, as well as business expenses.

3. Tracking category spending

Many credit cards have reporting features built in, so you can see statistics on where your money is being spent. For example, you can find out if you spent more at restaurants this month versus last, or how much you've been spending at gas stations. If you're a small-business owner, your credit card may contain even more robust expense reporting tools. Using these tools, you can see if you need to adjust your budget or tighten up spending in certain areas. (See also: Best Credit Cards for Your Small Business)

4. Smoothing out your cash flow

Our income and our expenses are never as predictable as we would like them to be. Freelancers and small business owners occasionally deal with delayed payments from, and all of us will eventually have an unexpected home repair, car repair, or health care bill. Thankfully, your credit card can be used as a shock absorber of sorts for your personal finances. When a large bill arrives, or your income is delayed, you can rely on your credit card's grace period to hold you over until you can make ends meet.

A credit card's grace period is the time between when your statement period closes and your payment is due. When you pay your statement balance in full before the grace period ends, nearly all credit cards waive your interest charges. By law, a credit card's grace period must be at least 21 days, but many have grace periods of 25 days. This means that you could have as many as 30 days before your statement period ends, plus as many as 25 days to pay your balance in full. That adds up to an interest-free float of up to 55 days on your credit cards, giving you a lot of time to get your finances in order while avoiding interest charges.

5. Earning rewards

When you avoid interest charges by paying your monthly statement balances in full, then you can earn rewards from your credit cards at no cost. For example, some credit cards offer cash back or travel statement credits worth a percentage of all your purchase transactions — sometimes as high as 2 percent on every purchase. Two percent might not sound like a lot, but it can help you to make ends meet.

Instead of earning cash back, some people use travel rewards credit cards to earn frequent flyer miles or hotel points. When you are able to use these travel rewards instead of paying out of pocket for a flight or a hotel stay, it's another way that your credit card can help you save money and manage your budget. They say it's the root of all evil, but we all need it to survive. Your money problems can really bring you down, and that creates a horrible Catch-22 situation. You can't reduce your stress without more money, but you can't make more money while you're stressed out.

However, with a shift in your attitude, despite whatever money problems you may have, you can work toward real solutions. Here are five ways you can solve some of your money problems just by thinking about them in a different way. (See also: 9 Ways Money Does Buy Happiness)

1. Reduce high interest rates and increase credit limits

There are a few ways you can deal with the interest rates and limits on your credit cards.

You can simply accept that they are what they are, and get on with life.

You can whine and complain about them to your friends and family.

Or you can be proactive, and get in touch with customer service.

Most of the time, reducing your interest rate or getting a credit line increase is as simple as asking for it. (Depending on your credit score, a credit line increase can be a bit harder to get and may hinge upon how much available credit you currently have.) Of course, how you ask is very important.

If you plan on calling, be positive, polite, and prepared. If you do it by live chat, make sure you use plenty of appropriate emojis or phrases that ensure you come across as nice, not demanding. Tell the credit card company you have been a loyal customer, you were given a low-rate offer by another card, but would love to stay with them for a reduced rate (or increased line of credit). Usually, you'll be offered something to your benefit within the first few minutes. It's really that easy. (See also: This One Ratio Is the Key to a Good Credit Score)

2. Bring in additional sources of income

There's an old saying that's applicable to many aspects of life, but it works particularly well for your finances: "Whether you think you can, or your think you can't, you're right."

Many years ago, I was convinced that the only way to make more money was to get a raise, a promotion, or move to a company with a higher paying job. I never even considered the possibility of making money from other lines of work, so no chances to make more money ever appeared. Then, I started talking to people who did. They told me to look for opportunities, be positive about new ventures, and really believe that I could make more money. And, just with that change in attitude, side-hustles started to happen. Freelance work, paying hobbies, buying and selling items on eBay, and so many other gigs fell into my lap. On their own, they were small. But together, they made me enough extra money to buy a bigger home for my growing family. Be open to the chances of making more, and you will. It works.

3. Get discounts on almost everything you buy

One of the ways to ensure you get bargains — and to never pay full price if you can avoid it — is to have a great attitude. You can demand a discount with an arrogance that stinks, and you probably won't get it. But with a smile, some genuine banter, and empathy, you can easily convince anyone to take some money off the items you're looking to purchase.

Politely ask the store manager if they have expiring products you can buy at a discount. Ask for free shipping, or expedited shipping at no charge when you buy something online. There is always a chance to chat with customer service, and if you emit nothing but positive energy, you'll usually get a coupon code, a free item included, or some other financial freebie. Try it out. Don't be smarmy, but do go out of your way to be nice. The worst that can happen is that you'll pay what you were going to pay anyway.

4. Achieve your financial goals

Whatever your income, you should have financial goals. They could be simply reducing debt, saving for a vacation, investing, building your own business, or getting into real estate. The principles for success are the same, no matter the goal. And you need to set goals and maintain a healthy, positive attitude for this to work.

Sometimes it can be daunting to go through all of your assets and liabilities, but it's important. When you have a clear picture of where you stand, spend some time thinking about where you want to be in one month, one year, and even five years. Plan these goals, and find ways to make them happen. Maybe that dream vacation needs you to sacrifice the morning Starbucks run, and fewer meals at restaurants. Or maybe you cut a few things out to pay down your student loan more quickly. If you simply deny yourself things to save money, it can be tough to maintain. But by working toward a goal, tracking your progress, and maintaining that determined, positive attitude, it becomes much easier.

5. Destroy envy-induced spending

A lot of us tend to focus on what we don't have. This is in part due to advertising and the culture of materialism. We see people on Facebook sharing photos of bigger homes, new cars, jewelry, and exotic vacations, and we think I wish I had that. That is immediately going to put you in a negative mindset, and it can be hard to escape from it. But if you have access to a safe home, clean water, nutritious food, and a life that does not involve the daily risk of death and disease, you're doing really well. (See also: 6 Ways Envy Is Keeping You Poor)

Wealth is relative. Success is relative. It simply requires a paradigm shift to a more positive view of the great things you really have, rather than some of the "great" things you want. And when it comes down to it, most of the material stuff is just that. We really get our happiness from family, friends, partners, and experiences. No one runs into the burning house to save the big TV; they go for the family photos. So, while it may sound hokey, get into the habit of writing down the things you're thankful for at the end of each day. Spend time reading through these lists at the end of each week, or month. You'll shift your thinking to appreciate the good, and while you can still want more, it doesn't make you unhappy that you don't have it.

Like this article? When you're feeling ill, you go to your doctor. And when you need sound financial advice from someone who would never belittle or money-shame you, you go to Donna Freedman. We sung her praises after reading her book, Playbook For Tough Times: Living Large On Small Change, For The Short Term Or The Long Haul, and lucky for us (and you) she has recently released her new book, Your Playbook For Tough Times, Vol. 2.

Yep, Freedman is back with even more spectacular tips on how to make the most of what you have, even if that is very little. Here are some of the best ways to stretch your dollars and survive a financial setback Vol. 2 had to offer.

1. Know that you are not alone

The best part of Your Playbook For Tough Times, Vol. 2. — or any bit of wisdom Freedman shares, really — is that she gets where you're coming from as she's been through financial struggles herself. Freedman has faced a lengthy divorce, she's been a single mom to a disabled adult daughter while scraping by on money from part-time jobs, and she went back to school later in life. She gets it.

She's not sitting up in a gold tower on a pile of money telling you how your financial struggles are your fault. Freedman's empathy is genuine and her tips are realistic. It's like a best friend who is also your financial adviser telling you how to achieve your goals, and showing you why there's no doubt you will.

2. Stop seeing frugality as a punishment

Freedman emphasizes that frugality is not punishment, but rather, a power move. Controlling your spending urges, scaling back a bit on entertainment and dining out, and other frugal strategies will ultimately help you reach your financial goals. So while the road to reaching those goals may seem long, you shouldn't view your careful money habits as restrictive and misery-inducing, especially if they lead you to paying off your mortgage and retiring early. Because isn't that the whole point?

3. Always be prepared for tough times

After Freedman published Your Playbook For Tough Times, Vol. 1, she received the following comment that caught her eye:

"I realized that 'tough times' are no longer an isolated event. They're pretty much like a fifth season, like hurricane season, and (something) one really has to prepare for."

While many people see financial hardships as something to always be prepared for, others still view them as isolated incidents that may happen once or twice, but never again. That's not the case, though, is it? Life is long, and your financial situation may change a dozen times before you reach retirement. So rather than seeing these obstacles as temporary and infrequent, proactively gain the upper hand by spending mindfully and saving diligently, even when your finances are solid.

4. Focus, focus, focus

Every time I go to put an item into my cart from this point on, I'll hear Freedman's clever words, "The trick is to care about what you spend vs. spending without a care."

Sure, it looks like a blast to grab cute clothes off all the shelves of your favorite store and hand your card over to the cashier without even looking at the total, but nobody should be making reckless money moves like these unless all of their debt is paid off. Freedman provides actionable steps to kick this urge and spend more mindfully.

There's also a section where she recommends adding personal finance goals in between items on your shopping list. Seeing things like, "Retire by 40" and "Pay off credit debt by next year" sandwiched between things you're planning to spend money on keeps you laser-focused on careful spending, keeping you from falling victim to impulse buys that can pull you off-course.

5. The right attitude can change everything

In chapter two, "A Winning Attitude," Freedman discusses how vital it is to be able to adapt. A job loss or a health setback can quickly derail your finances. And as difficult as it is to recover, you must be able to strategize in order to survive.

An example she gives is a woman living paycheck-to-paycheck who has just gotten her hours cut at work. Her attitude might be: "Once I pay my rent and utilities this month there will be nothing left for groceries." Sure, it's a reasonable reaction, but how will that help her? Instead, Freedman recommends a shift in mindset like this: "I'm going to make it my business to find short-term help to get through this, and also search for a steadier job."

This subtle tweak into positivity and determination can mean the difference between scraping by and going hungry. Those who can adapt during tough situations are the ones who will make it to the other side, after all.

6. Acknowledge how lucky you are

Freedman acknowledges that it may seem trite, but the importance of appreciating all that you do have during a financial crisis cannot be understated. She writes, "When I was at my lowest point financially, I kept reminding myself that I had family and friends, a roof over my head, basic food, a library card, and a chance to improve my life by going back to school (on scholarship — no way was I borrowing money)."

So while it may take some time to reach your financial goals and to really feel the comfort of the cushion you're building, the ride will be a lot smoother if you can look around and be content with what you already have.

Like this article? Being a kid was easy, and being a grownup always seemed terrifying. It meant being financially responsible for everything and struggling to make ends meet while pursuing my goals.

Luckily, every single person on this planet can relate to that fear, and they are all trying to make it on their own, as well. So when I read the new book by Bobbi Rebell, award-winning TV anchor and former personal finance columnist at Reuters, entitled How to Be a Financial Grownup, I was immediately put at ease.

Rebell's book is a compelling collection of stories from successful entrepreneurs and famous faces, detailing the moments they became financial grownups, and the wisdom they picked up along the way. Rebell brilliantly interweaves these powerful stories with her own expertise, and provides actionable steps to make your financial goals a reality. Here are the lessons on how to be a financial grownup that stuck with me the most.

1. Don't compare your path to others

The third chapter of How to Be a Financial Grownup, titled "Careers Are for Making Money" is my absolute favorite section of the book. Fashion designer Cynthia Rowley, Betterment CEO Jon Stein, Macy’s Chairman and CEO Terry J. Lundgren, and others share their stories of how they made it big. All have extremely different paths to success, and some had significant bumps along the way. But you have your own unique background, which shapes your own unique goals. Follow them, and embrace the fact that you are putting yourself out there as someone new, hungry, and different from the rest.

2. Accept that failure is a given

You're going to fail. You're going to struggle. You're going to get burned. It's inevitable. And failure can come in many different forms, but none should deter you from chasing your goals. An extreme example of struggle is when Jim Cramer, host of Mad Money, shared his story with Rebell of being the target of multiple robberies while living in Los Angeles, and upon returning from a journalism assignment in San Diego, learned he was evicted from his L.A. apartment. Cramer was homeless, and his financial grownup moment came when he realized he never wanted to be that poor again. He switched from a career in journalism to finance.

The good thing about human beings is our incredible ability to adapt to our surroundings. So when you're facing an epic financial or professional failure, you'll still be able to get some clarity, pick yourself up, and try again the next day.

3. Allow yourself to splurge on those lattes, sometimes

Rebell fully acknowledges that gourmet, pricey lattes should not be an everyday occurrence. We've heard a million times before that expensive coffee is the reason we're all broke, why we can't buy houses, etc. Luckily, Rebell finds a healthy balance between overspending on and abstaining from your morning beverage of choice. Her two exceptions to the "never buy lattes" rule are as follows:

"Buy coffee at a coffee shop if you're going there for social reasons. Meeting friends at a coffee shop is going to be a lot cheaper than going out for a meal."

"If you're using the coffee shop as an ad hoc office, by all means buy some coffee. Sitting at a coffee shop for a few hours to get some work done, or having a meeting, is a lot less expensive than paying rent on an office."

See? It's all about balance and moderation. Being a financial grownup shouldn't mean setting restrictive limits on things you enjoy, so long as you don't overdo it.

4. Push bad debt out of your way

According to Rebell, bad debt — most commonly credit card debt and student loan debt — is what's standing in your way of becoming a financial grownup. You don't need all of your bad debt to be paid off to before you become a financial grownup, though. The first step to reaching financial maturity is acknowledging the obstacles in front of you. Then you come up with a strategy to defeat them, including reasonable goals that you can meet on a flexible timeline. This process will never be as simple as, "Day 1: Add up bad debt, Day 2: Pay it all off," unless you stumble upon a pile of cash. But coming up with a realistic plan that works will be immensely rewarding.

5. Nurture your relationship with credit

The thing about credit is that it's not all bad. We all want to be careful about the way we spend money and manage bad debt, but credit is something to be built, embraced, and closely monitored. You need it, even if you'd rather avoid it altogether.

This is something millennials should work on. NerdWallet found that about a third of people ages 18 to 34 have never applied for a credit card. While it's wise to have a healthy fear of how irresponsible spending with credit cards can ruin your life, you still need to build credit in order to eventually buy a car or house, and to do all the other things financial grownups do. Rebell suggests using only a small portion of the credit you have available, "ideally about 10 percent, and really try to use no more than 30 percent."

6. Stop asking the wrong questions

When Rebell asked Kevin O'Leary, successful entrepreneur and star of Shark Tank, to share his financial grownup moment, he recalled a powerful conversation with his stepfather. O'Leary was in high school when his stepfather, George, asked him what he wanted to do with his life. O'Leary wanted to skip college and become a photographer. George told him that "'to be or not to be' isn't the question. The question is: What are you willing to do in order to be what you want to be?"

That shift in mindset helped O'Leary realize he wasn't willing to make the sacrifices involved in becoming a photographer. He wanted to make money, and in his business ventures he has made lots of it. That financial freedom has, in turn, allowed him to take up photography in his free time.

So when you think about each goal you set for yourself, you shouldn't be asking what you want, but rather, how you're going to get it, and strategize from there.

This article is from Chrissa Hardy of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. And while the paths to these goals can require different choices, the methodologies behind the success in each are actually quite similar.

Jean Chatzky, acclaimed author and financial editor of NBC's Today, and Dr. Michael Roizen, longtime wellness expert at the Cleveland Clinic, have brought their respective areas of expertise together in a new book to show readers how to become AgeProof. They create easily actionable steps to achieve healthful longevity with enduring financial security with the same habits. They take the guesswork out of how to live longer and become richer. Is there anything better than that?

Here are the best bits of wisdom from AgeProof that'll show you how to live your best life.

1. Instant Gratification Is the Enemy

One of the first things Chatzky and Roizen mention is that we often pit instant gratification against long-term security. And that habit tends to affect health and wealth at every turn. If we learn how to manage the need to have something right now so that we could have much more in the future, our lives would vastly improve. Terrible financial and health-related decisions are made on impulse, and can have negative ramifications. But patience feels like a sacrifice, and Chatzky and Roizen want to teach you that you don't have to sacrifice in order to gain health and wealth. There is a middle ground that can work for you.

2. You Need to Acknowledge Your Longevity

The reason it's so important to strive for optimal health and wealth is because people are living longer lives. No matter how old you think you'll get, technology and medicine is improving at a rapid pace, so you'll probably live longer than you think. So if your goal is to enjoy a healthy life with a thick financial cushion, you need to master this interconnecting skill now in order to make that possible. And it's one thing to just survive to an old age with money in the bank, but it's another thing entirely to thrive until your very last day.

3. Science Is Your Friend

Sure, it would be easy to use medical statistics and financial statistics separately to reinforce the concept that health and wealth are important, but Chatzky and Roizen incorporate scientific data at the beginning of each section to show how these two are directly linked. Because in order to believe something can work for you, it's helpful to see how it has already helped others. It makes the goal seem even more achievable, and Chatzky and Roizen are your biggest cheerleaders here — even sharing some of their own personal anecdotes in the margins.

4. You Never Have to Settle for a Mediocre Life

One of the most important things Chatzky and Roizen reinforce is that you can dig yourself out of any hole. It doesn't matter if your finances are a complete disaster and you're in the worst shape of your life. These are both common problems that are easily reversible, and they provide small, actionable steps to getting back on track. At the end of each chapter, they even offer a list of three AgeProof Essentials that you can tackle right away.

5. Nobody Achieves Anything Alone

Building a strong community is crucial to going the distance in finance and health. Isolating yourself in either, or both, areas of your life adds stress, while sharing your progress in a social setting gives you space to reflect on your goals, as well as helping others feel less alone in those same struggles. Keeping a proper team, both professionally and personally, will aid you in your path to achieving health and wealth, and Chatzky and Roizen show you how.

Pick up AgeProof: Living Longer Without Running Out of Money or Breaking a Hip today!

This article is from Janet Alvarez of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. And it often requires way more than just strength. You need a plan, you need willpower, you need guidance, and you need the right tools. All of those things can be found in Donna Freedman's new book, Playbook For Tough Times: Living Large On Small Change, For The Short Term Or The Long Haul.

Freedman doesn't just offer incredible advice, she shares her personal struggles. She understands what it's like to scrape by as a young single mom. She has had to find creative and frugal ways to shop for groceries on a very limited budget. She also knows what it's like to have a bank account emptied by a lengthy divorce — and while caring for a special-needs child and attending college later in life. Freedman doesn't sugarcoat her financial tips because she knows there's nothing sweet about being broke. Her book reads like a conversation with your savvy best friend — she understands you, and she wants to help you. Here are some of her best tips for weathering any financial storm.

1. Don't Take It Personally

It's easy to look at your money woes and fixate on where it all went wrong, or at what point you screwed everything up. But if you obsess over what you specifically did wrong, you end up living inside that dark cloud of self-blame instead of seeking a solution. Freedman knows this cycle of negativity all too well.

"During my own difficult times I'd sometimes wonder, Why me? Ultimately I realized the answer: Why not me? Stuff happens. Life happens. It's not personal. So I worked to fix what I could and made my peace with the rest of it. No, life isn't fair. But unless your fairy godmother drops off a winning Powerball ticket, you have to play the hand you were dealt," Freedman writes.

2. Stay Frugal When Flush to Reach Financial Goals

It's no longer 2008, and we're inching our way out of the aftermath of the Great Recession. Back then, frugality meant survival, so there was no other way to live. Now that the economy is becoming more stable, people are starting to spend more, and save less. But living frugally doesn't need to be an emergency-only money strategy. The frugal lifestyle can help you reach your financial goals.

Whether you're striving for an early retirement, paying off all your debt in the next few years, starting a family, or taking a much-needed vacation — as long as you make a conscious effort to save as often as possible, you'll be able to achieve the goals you want.

3. Understand That Frugality Is Fabulous

Freedman's mantra, "Save where you can so you can spend where you want," is exactly what the world needs. You don't have to settle for eating ramen noodles for every meal for the rest of your life, but you also shouldn't overspend on everyday essentials that you can get for free or very cheap.

Having the money to splurge occasionally, while also knowing how to get by when times get tough is a skill set that will make you financially invincible. And whenever the frugal life seems overwhelmingly tough to master, think about this bit of wisdom from Freedman:

"Ultimately I wanted more than rice and beans, thrift-store clothing, and part-time jobs that didn't pay well. But I was well aware that having those things made me luckier than a whole lot of people in this world. A rich life is not necessarily determined by the number of dollar signs in it."

4. Find All the Freebies

Why pay for something when you can get it for free? When a big chunk of your spending is entertainment-based — going to the movies, visiting museums, or embracing your bookworm side — Freedman shows you how to do all of that fun stuff for zero dollars.

She also provides brilliant methods for slashing health expenses that can add up quickly, and lists foundations that provide free or reduced-price mammograms, dental work (including orthodontics), utility assistance, and eye exams and glasses. After all, there ain't no shame in the freebie game.

5. Embrace the Financial Fire Drill

The best tip, by far, is implementing what Freedman calls a "financial fire drill." It's essentially a budget makeover that focuses on cutting down the number of bills you need to pay, and shifting into a smarter way to use your available funds. She breaks it down into three simple steps:

On paper, build a baseline budget — which is the absolute minimum you need to survive.

Pretend that your household lost some or all of its income.

Subtract the baseline from the income that remains (including unemployment, if that's an option). If the answer is a negative number, time to take another look at those wants and needs.

Doing this when your finances are stable gives you a head start into a better life, and also protects you from a major financial setback should tough times arise.

Feeling motivated yet? From a financial standpoint, 2016 was a mixed bag, at best. Of course, there's no guarantee that next year will be markedly better. But here are a bunch of financial reasons why we're ready to put up a new calendar.

1. Poor Economic Growth

For most of the time after World War II, Americans could count on a growing economy, usually to the tune of at least 3%, and often significantly higher. These days, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the United States is stuck on a slower growth path. While the economy did have a good third quarter, it's likely that growth for the year will be under 3% because of a dismal first half of the year. It's better than being in a recession, but this slower growth could have big implications on incomes, investment returns, and Americans' overall quality of life over time.

2. Mediocre Investment Returns

So far in 2016, the S&P 500 has increased in value by a little over 7%. That's not bad, but many investors were hoping for a bigger jump after an increase of less than 2% in 2015. In the post World War II period, there have been only about a dozen instances when investment returns didn't average at least 5% annually over a two-year period. This will be the eighth consecutive year of positive market returns, and that's a good thing. But the last couple of years have fallen into the "good, not great" category, and that may force a lot of people to adjust their overall retirement projections downward.

3. Fewer People Working

America's unemployment rate is 4.9%, and that's historically quite low. So good news, right? Well, any excitement over that number is tempered by the fact that overall participation in the labor force is at one of its lowest points in the last 50 years. About 63 million people are considered part of the civilian workforce, but that's down from 67 million 15 years ago. The unemployment rate does not consider people who have voluntarily left the workforce or have been out of work for a very long time.

There are a variety of reasons why fewer Americans are working, and not all of them are bad. An aging population means more people are retiring. More people are pursuing advanced education. The Affordable Care Act has made it easier for some people to get health insurance without the need to get it through an employer. People who choose to be out of the workforce for too long may lose skills that will make them more employable later. And a declining workforce also has a negative impact on household incomes, consumer spending, and, ultimately, economic growth.

4. Paltry Interest Returns

We've been in an ultralow interest environment for years now. Many of us have benefitted from the low cost of borrowing, but this also means that our savings accounts aren't generating much return. This is bad for anyone starting out saving and for older retirees who rely on interest income. It's also generally a sign from the Federal Reserve that the economy still needs some propping up. Low interest rates can be helpful to us in some respects, but most economists yearn for a time when rates weren't hovering near zero.

5. Flat Wages

Did you get a raise in 2016? If not, you're probably not alone. Real wage growth has been basically flat for years, and this year has been no exception. The U.S. Department of Labor reports that real average weekly earnings rose just 1% in September compared to the same month a year ago. The average worker earns just 11 cents per hour more than this same time last year, when you factor in inflation. This stubborn wage stagnation has a negative impact on the middle class, especially when you consider things like the rising cost of education. Will 2017 be better?

6. Brexit Reax

The world pretty much freaked out over the summer when people in the United Kingdom voted to have their country leave the European Union. It was a result that many believed could not happen, and sent stock markets around the globe tumbling. The British Pound lost a good chunk of its value, and overall uncertainty of what happens next has led to a drag on the economy and England and Europe as a whole.

7. Fumbling Phone Makers

In recent years, companies that make smartphones and other digital devices have been huge drivers of the stock market and the economy. Apple and Samsung certainly come to mind. But in 2016, it was a lot of bad news and disappointment.

Samsung was forced to recall and stop production on its Galaxy Note 7, after reports that the phones were catching fire. This news virtually wiped out all of the company's profits for the third quarter of 2016.

Meanwhile, Samsung's top competitor, Apple, hasn't exactly taken advantage. The company sold 45 million of its popular iPhone in the most recent quarter, compared to 48 million in the same period last year. And reviews of the newest iPhone 7 have been tepid. Shares of the company are up about 8% this year, which is solid growth but less than what we've come to expect from the tech behemoth. There is hope for 2017, however, as Apple says it will spend a whopping $16 billion on capital expenditures next year.

This article is from Tim Lemke of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. I think the reason so many parents hold back from talking about money with their children is because they feel like they have nothing to offer. Or that kids don't need to learn about money until they're old enough to get a job. But there's a great deal they can learn from you during their younger years.

No matter what your financial situation is, how much debt you have, or what you make per year, you can master better financial habits that your kids can learn from. Lead by example with these three important practices.

Maintain a Giving Heart

When your kids are driving you nuts, and you just want to get from your car into the store or restaurant as fast as possible, someone begging for money can seem like an inconvenience. It can be tempting to blow off the person with thoughts like, Get a job, or I don't even have enough money for my own family. Instead, offer to buy the person a meal at the restaurant or a grocery item at the store you are about to enter.

This shows your children how to be giving and thoughtful of others. If the person does accept your offer, you can turn it into a simple teaching moment with your children. Say something like, "You know how we always have food to eat or how you have a bed to sleep in? Some people don't have anything."

Many times, the person in need will just want money. This is another great teachable moment. Encourage your children to help meet basic needs, but to not just foolishly throw their money at people. This goes for both homeless people and friends/family members who try to take advantage of others.

Avoid Impulse Buys

We see it in places like Target all the time: A child begs for every toy or sparkly thing. While the mother says, "no" firmly, she also has no reserve as she tosses a cute blouse and table décor into her cart.

I'm guilty of this, too. I'm pretty good at keeping my children in check with impulse buys at the store, but I didn't immediately realize that I needed the same lesson. Now when we shop, and my four-year old asks if we can buy something, I try to make that a teachable moment for both of us. I say, "Honey, I know you want a lot of things here, and so do I, but it is so important for us to buy only what we need today."

Does this mean you can never buy anything fun? Of course not. But plan and budget for the fun items, including your children in the process. Maybe saying something like, "Today we are going to pick out some holiday decorations. Our budget is $20 today. Can you help me pick out something?"

See also: 5 Easy Things Science Says You Should Do for Your Family

Set Financial Goals

Goals are extremely important in life. I'm not talking about vague and lofty goals such as, getting out of debt or saving $20,000 by January 1. You need to set concrete goals that have actionable steps, and keep progress of your goals until completion. Don't be afraid to tell older kids what your financial goals are for the year, and give them progress reports. It is important for children to learn that they can accomplish a huge variety of tasks — saving money, getting healthy, learning a skill, etc. — if they set and follow through with their goals.

To make this a family matter, come up with a fun vacation you can take together. Figure out the cost (don't forget to budget in money for unexpected extras) and the date. For example, if you are planning on spending $2,500 for a weekend vacation in six months, then you would need to save about $100 each week. Make it a fun game by drawing a chart that tracks progress.

Another way to help your child understand how to set financial goals is to have them set their own. For example, if they want a certain toy at the store, figure out how much it will cost. Then make a savings jar and a progress chart for them that relates to how much they earn per week through chores. Frugal-mama.com has a free savings goal printable to help you track progress.

See also: 8 Reasons Frugal Families Love Boardgame Night

Whether you don't want to burden your kids with your financial woes or you feel like you don't have enough information to give them, think again. If you already live your life according to a to-do list, then this journal will help you organize the millions of to-do lists that you have for every part of your life.

A bullet journal, originally created by Brooklyn-based digital product designer Ryder Carroll, is a to-do list that can help you manage your finances, track your expenses, and budget more effectively. You can even use it to help you save more. Your spending book can assist with financial planning by helping you set goals and track them on a daily, weekly, monthly, and even yearly basis.

How to Use It

A bullet journal can be used for whatever you need. It can help you keep better track of your work projects, organize your daily life, or improve your finances. The purpose of this journal is to jot down quick bullet point notes, rather than writing out full sentences. This is referred to as "rapid logging" and can help save you time.

How to Make One

You can find a number of bullet journal budget layouts online. The most important thing is to have a quality journal that is the right size, so you can take it with you anywhere you need. Most journal enthusiasts recommend getting a journal with dotted lines, as this makes it easier to adapt to different layouts. Some bullet journal enthusiasts also recommend finding a journal that already has a blank index and numbered pages to save you more time.

To get things started, there are some standard sections that are traditionally included in most bullet journals:

Index: Each page in your journal should have a page number, which you can reference in your index. This will help you quickly find whatever you need.

Daily Log: Keep track of everything you need to get done for the day. Tasks, events, and notes should be tracked for each day. For important bullets, mark them with a star to the left, so your eye will automatically go to this important task. Once you complete a task, add an X to the left, so you can see that it's been completed. When you're planning for the following month, simply move over any tasks that did not get completed (with an X) from the prior month.

Monthly Log: This will be split into each day of the month and can be used as a traditional monthly calendar.

Monthly Task List: Write down everything you need to get done over the month, such as paying bills.

Future Log: This can help you keep track of future events and goals, and can put your year at a glance. It's ideal for long-term goals, such as paying off a particular bill or increasing your monthly contribution to your retirement accounts.

To make your journal more effective, you'll need to master a few simple symbols so that you can easily categorize your tasks. The most commonly used symbols include:

A bullet is a to-do.

An X marks a task completed.

An O marks a big event.

A — marks a note or quick thought.

A < marks a scheduled event.

A > means you procrastinated and need to move that task to the following day, week, or month.

If you don't like these symbols, you can use whatever you prefer. If you tend to get confused or can't remember what the symbols mean in the beginning, simply keep a key in the front or back of your journal.

How the Journal Relates to Your Finances

With a bullet journal, your past, present, and future can meld into one. This will allow you to look back and see what has worked and what hasn't. In order for this to work, you need to track your successes along the way. Think of it as your financial diary. Be honest about what you purchased, whether those purchases were worth it, how you saved extra money every month, and how much closer you're getting toward your financial goals.

Track a Single Goal

If you have trouble with one particular task, and you feel gratification from crossing things off your to-do list, then consider focusing on one goal that you can track in your journal. Simply set one line for each month (with numbers for each day of the month) and cross off each day that you are able to achieve this goal. Some of the best things to track include taking lunch to work every day (saving you a hefty sum every month) and not spending money on an expensive habit (like drinking, eating out, or buying cigarettes).

Determine What You're Saving For

First, you want to figure out what you're saving for and when you'd like to reach that goal. Separate one page into four sections, for this year and the next three years. Mark what you'd like to save for in each year. You can also keep a page of things that you want, so you can keep your eye on the prize, rather than just buying everything you want on the spot.

Find fun ways to save for certain future events, such as a vacation, new car, or wedding. For a basic savings plan, mark what you're saving for with a rectangle that includes small boxes for every $100 that you need to save. Once you save $100 toward that goal, you can fill in the box, so you can see how much closer you're getting to your goal.

Track Your Bills and Expenses

You can track expenses, plan out how you'll achieve your financial goals, check off that you met your budget every week, and track your bills paid and due. You can even flag your expenses with different symbols or colors, based on the category or necessity, so you can get a better idea of what you're spending the most on and what you can cut out. Try to set up at least two pages to track your expenses and income.

To track your bills due, note all of the bills you pay regularly. Separate these expenses into how often they need to be paid down the side of the journal page. At the top, split each month into three sections: Amount, Due Date, and Paid (which you will mark with an X once the bill or expense has been paid). This will ensure that you never miss a payment again.

For your expenses list, separate one page into categories, so you can mark what you've spent toward each category, such as gas and groceries. Separate your monthly expenses spread into three columns: Date, Description, and Cost. You can also add another column for how you paid (by cash, check, or card), if you're trying to use cash or a particular card more often. You can even color code the expenses, based on whether you wanted them or needed them. This can serve as your checkbook registrar, so you can keep track of what's been spent and where. It'll give you a better estimate of what you're spending on each category, so you can make future projections.

Keep a Financial Spread

Keep track of what your financial goals are and how often you should be saving for them. This will ensure that you save enough without having to save more than you're able to afford.

These are the basics of starting and using a bullet journal. Your journal is what you make of it, so customize it in any way you choose. Just try to keep it fun and organized, so it can help you achieve the ultimate financial freedom. If you want to delve more deeply into this powerful to-do list, there is endless information online and you can even find inspiration on Pinterest and Instagram.

Like this article? Do you support or oppose certain candidates based on your own spending or investing style?

There are plenty of stereotypes out there, but also a good amount of evidence suggesting that the way we vote is a reflection of our approach to money. The studies sampled below vary in size and quality, so take them with a grain of salt, to be sure — but here's what they tell us about your vote and your money.

1. Conservatives Save, Liberals Spend

This is a generalization, but it does appear to be backed up by some data. A 2014 Gallup poll revealed that 64% of self-identified conservatives prefer saving money over spending it, compared to 54% for self-identified liberals. And this difference in attitude appears to exist even among young people, though there is growing evidence that Millennials learned to become more frugal after the Great Recession.

2. Democrats Have More Credit Cards, But Use Them More Wisely

A survey from Credit Sesame last year revealed that people in Democratic (or "Blue") states have more credit cards and higher credit limits than those in Republican-leaning states. Republican states, on the other hand, use fewer cards and have less debt overall, but had 34% more people who have gone over their credit limit.

3. Beliefs Guide Investing

If you have strong feelings on certain social or political issues, it may impact how you shop and how you invest. A conservative voter might not want to invest in movie studios that make violent films, or have sexual content. An anti-gun voter would avoid a mutual fund that invests in Smith and Wesson. Environmentally conscious investors will research a company's record on sustainability or pollution before becoming shareholders.

These days, there are hundreds of socially conscious mutual funds that exclude companies for a reasons ranging from their sale of tobacco or alcohol, their use or production of nuclear power, their role in the defense industry, or their labor practices.

4. If Your Candidate's Winning, You're More Optimistic

If the candidate you support is in the lead, then you feel good about the future. And an optimistic person is more likely to invest their money, under the assumption that the economy and stock market will do well. Research shows this is true whether you're a Democrat or a Republican. A study titled, Political Climate, Optimism, and Investment Decisions showed that Democrats were more optimistic about the economy after 1992 and 1996, but that trend reversed in 2000, when a Republican took office.

5. You Should Vote the Way You Should Invest — With Your Eyes on the Horizon

Accumulating wealth requires patience and time and a willingness to look at the big picture. The best investors take a long view with their money, rather than buy and sell on a whim. And it's possible to vote with a similar mindset. When voting, do you wonder which candidate is best equipped to plan for the nation's long-term health? Voters taking the long view might be attracted to candidates who talk about things like infrastructure investment, the cost of entitlements, or future changes in technology or demographics.

Do any of these money and politics links ring true for you?

This article is from Tim Lemke of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
