Score Coupons for Every Online Store (Even the Ones That "Don't Have Coupons")

When shopping online, you've probably become accustomed to using coupons as a means of saving money. Sometimes you're lucky enough to receive coupons via email from your favorite retailers; sometimes you have to take the time to scour the Internet, searching far and wide for a deal that can help you save. And of course, there are times when you come up short; no matter what you do, you just can't seem to find a coupon for a particular online store. (See also: Money-Saving Tips for Online Shopping)

What are your options?

Rather than pay full price, here are some tips to improve your chance of securing that elusive coupon for that particular store.

Review the Store's Website

Did you know that some stores offer coupon codes right on their websites? This may sound obvious, but many people continually overlook this simple idea. Check the homepage or a "coupon" page before you start shopping.

Fill Up Your Online Cart and Abandon It

Try this trick. Fill up your cart with all the items you want, and then leave the site behind for a couple of days. If you are signed into your account when doing so, the store may contact you with a coupon code to "tempt" you into visiting the site once again and finally checking out. Check Multiple Coupon Sharing Websites

Online services such as RetailMeNot (or Wise Bread's Coupon Search) dedicate a lot of time, money, and resources to helping consumers save money. Regardless of the store at which you're shopping, there's a good chance that one of these websites will have at least one coupon code. If you're lucky, you will find several codes, giving you the opportunity to compare each one to ensure that you are getting the best deal possible.

Search Internet Forums and Blogs

Many consumers enjoy sharing money-saving coupons and tips with others. You may be surprised at what you come up with when you search for coupons for a particular store. Getting started is as simple as navigating to Google and beginning your search. For example, you could search the following phrase: "Pottery Barn coupon codes." There's a good chance this will lead you to at least one forum or blog providing an active coupon code.

Register for an Event

If you're an "advanced saver," this is a strategy to consider. Register for a fake event, such as a baby shower or wedding shower. Once the event date passes, the retailer may send you a coupon code to purchase the items that others did not buy for you — which is all of them since your event is make believe. It takes some time to plan out this strategy, but in the long run it can save you a lot of money.

Hit Social Media and Ask

When I can't find a coupon code online after a lengthy search, I often reach out to the retailer directly through Facebook or Twitter and ask if there's one available. On more than one occasion, the retailer in question has responded to my message and provided me a coupon code. Easy-breezy. (See also: How to Make Facebook Productive)

Join the Store's Mailing List

Do you ever wonder why stores ask you for your email when checking out? It's not because they want to sell your address to spammers. It because they want to stay in touch with you in the future, which includes sending out special offers and coupons.

Remember, you can always unsubscribe to the list if you desire. You might as well try this out with your favorite stores to see what they offer those who are part of their mailing list.

Do Receipt Surveys

You may think it's annoying when a store associate directs you towards a survey at the bottom of your receipt, but once you realize the benefits you will be singing a different tune.

Recently, a friend of mine purchased a pair of shoes and then gave me the receipt so I could complete the survey and receive a coupon code. It took a couple minutes of my time, but the $10 off was well worth it.

Don't Be Afraid to Call (or Chat)

Have the strategies above left you empty handed? If so, there is one last thing you can do: Pick up the phone, and ask for a coupon code. Don't be shy about taking this step, as many stores are more than willing to help you out. (See also: 9 Ways to Get What You Want From Customer Service)

Before you do this, however, put all the items you want to purchase in your shopping cart. This will give you an idea of your total cost, which should help the store supply you with the appropriate coupon.

When it comes time to contact the store, there are multiple ways of doing so. In this situation, the best option is a "live chat," if available. This gives you the opportunity to connect with a live representative while your items are ready for checkout.

If you do not have the ability to start a live chat, there are a couple other options:

Call the customer service department
Contact the store via email

If you want to place your order now, without delay, you should make a phone call. Sending an email is an option to consider, but it can take up to 24 hours (or longer) to get a response.

It is always possible that you will run into a brick wall, never securing a coupon for the store at which you are shopping. But before you give in, implement the strategies above. Hopefully one of these will turn up a money-saving coupon!

Recently I discovered a few new methods for getting a steep discount on almost any online purchase without having to wait for a sale or until an item is on clearance. The great thing is, you can also stack these discounts on top of store sales, promotions, and clearance items, helping you save even more.

Buy a Discounted Gift Card

Have you ever gotten a gift card to a store you don't like? What if you could gain back 90% of the gift card's value in cash by selling it online? That's the mentality behind sites such as Ecardexchange.com.

These sites buy gift cards from the original owners and sell them back to you at a discount. By searching for and buying discounted gift cards online, you can save up to 25% off of the original value of the gift card. For instance, you can buy a Pottery Barn gift card at 10% off and use it at Pottery Barn, West Elm, Williams-Sonoma, and affiliated stores. Some gift cards are electronic, and the card code will be emailed to you almost instantly, while you can also buy physical cards which will be mailed to you.

Generally, more specialized shops will offer a better deal, whereas cards from general retailers such as Target or Walmart will have less of a discount.

Check out GiftCardGranny.com, a great website that aggregates gift cards from all of the reputable gift card sellers online, making it easy to compare prices.

Get an Electronic Rebate

Buy online from many large retailers through the Ebates.com website, and Ebates will give you between 1-20% cash back. Ebates is a completely legitimate website that earns commissions from retailers for referring you to their stores — a commission they then share with you in the form of a cash rebate. Sign up for a free account and get paid every three months through PayPal or by check. Not every store will have an "ebate," but you can usually find big retailers such as Macy's and Home Depot, as well as big online retailers such as Diapers.com and Wayfair.com.

All you have to do to get an Ebate is to click through to the online store of your choice from the Ebates website. Additionally, when you search for a retailer on the Ebates website, the search will also pull up coupons and promotions you can use, so you can get an even bigger discount.

Professional Perks

Check through your company (or college or university) whether you can get any online discounts or perks through the company network that you might not be aware of. For example, human resources giant ADP, which is used by many mid-size companies, offers a plethora of restaurant discounts, event ticket discounts, and more.

Combine Discounts

Combining coupons and sales isn't foreign to the avid "extreme couponer," but it's even easier to do it electronically. Combine a discounted gift card and an "ebate" with a store sale or promotion. Look for coupon codes on sites like Retailmenot.com to see if a bigger discount is available. With discounted gift cards and "ebates," you'll never pay full price for something online again.

1. Babysitting

Every parent needs a night off every now and then. If you have friends (or a friend — single parents probably need a break more than anybody) with kids, give them babysitting coupons that they can use whenever they need a breather. Make sure you stipulate on the coupon that you’ll need advance notice so you can avoid being called upon at the 11^th hour to fulfill your promise.

2. Pet Sitting

As a proud pet parent who likes to travel, I’m often in need of a pet sitter for a day or two. I would definitely like to receive one of these coupons so I can save the $100 per night it costs me to board both my dogs.

3. Winter Dog Walking

I would love to receive this coupon from my husband so I can use it on one of those blustery, blizzard-y mornings when I can’t seem to pull myself out of bed.

4. Home-Cooked Meal

When the recipient of this coupon is in need of a little TLC in food form, he or she can hand it over for a comforting breakfast, lunch, or dinner of their choice.

5. Massage

Give your significant other a coupon for a 10- to 20-minute massage that they can redeem on a day when work was especially stressful.

6. Car Wash

Everybody feels better in a shiny, sparkly car, so give this coupon to a friend or relative who lives nearby. Suggest to them that this coupon is perfect to turn in before a big date or other special event.

7. Takeout Run

You and your roommate want to order from your favorite restaurant but they don’t deliver. Who’s going to pick it up? That decision is made easier with a coupon redeemable for a takeout run.

8. Movie Night

There are some Friday nights when I just want to sit home, curl up on the couch with my hubby, and watch a couple movies while noshing on snacks. If that sounds like someone you love, give them a coupon for a movie night at home that they can turn in for a relaxing evening watching great flicks with their favorite movie buddy.

9. Resume Review

Provide a coupon to a friend who’s in the middle of a job search for a resume review. It’s ideal, of course, if you have the actual skills to review and revise a resume; you don’t want to do more harm than good with your coupon.

10. Lawn Mowing

I don’t know about you, but I hate mowing the lawn, so this is another coupon I’d love to receive from a friend (if I had a lawn to mow). It goes without saying that you should probably know what you’re doing before you hand over this coupon if only so you don’t butcher your friend’s yard and draw their ire.

11. Garden Weeding

My grandmother used to guilt me into helping her weed the garden when I was a teenager. I wish I had thought of giving her a coupon for that service instead of the restaurant gift certificates I had to shell out for.

12. Pool Cleaning

If you plan to give a pool owner a coupon for a cleaning, make sure you include the caveat that it’s only a light cleaning — skimming the top, vacuuming the bottom, and cleaning out the filters. Otherwise you might be expected to do much more work than you bargained for.

13. Exercise Partner

Like many people, I need a workout buddy to stay motivated at the gym. That’s why this coupon is sort of a gift to yourself if you need someone by your side, too.

14. Taking on Someone Else's Chores

If your spouse or roommate typically does a certain set of chores like cleaning the bathroom or washing the dishes, give them a coupon that lets them off the hook for one session.

15. Breakfast in Bed

Treat your mom or significant other to a breakfast-in-bed coupon that they can redeem whenever they want. When they turn it in, go all out for the breakfast by making their favorite dish (perhaps you can even provide a menu), pairing it with a mimosa, preparing it on a nice tray, and finishing it off with a single flower in a small vase or glass.

16. A Leisurely Bath

Ahh, who doesn’t like a nice long soak after a hard day in the dead of winter? When this coupon is redeemed, run a warm bubble bath and outfit the bathroom with a few other luxuries like a soft robe, a favorite magazine, and a glass of wine.

17. Small-Space Organization

Create this coupon for spaces like the recipient’s desk, car, or closet. Avoid the urge to be a hero. Don’t agree to organize spaces like the garage unless you’re fully prepared to get in way over your head.

18. Control of the TV Remote

This might be my favorite coupon on this entire list. I mean, how many times a week do you want to snatch the remote out of your honey’s hand so you can watch what you want to watch? He or she probably feels the same way when you have it. Do them a solid and give in — but just this once.

19. Cuddle Time

A coupon for cuddle time is a win for both parties in my opinion. Get your snuggle on.

20. Creative Service

If you’re good at a creative service — like graphic design — create coupons specifically geared toward what the recipients might want. For instance, give your friend with kids a coupon for custom-made birthday invitations. It’ll be a nice gift for the recipient, and it’s something brand new to add to your portfolio. Good deal.

10 Tips for Landing the Perfect House-Sitting Gig

The next time you go away, how would you like free accommodation? It has a full kitchen, bathroom, bedroom suite (often more than one), and all the devices and accouterments of home. In fact it is home — it's just somebody else's home. And in exchange for taking care of the place, you get to stay there for free — as a house-sitter.

In a recent post I wrote about how to travel the world full-time for $17,000 a year or less, I outlined a number of ways to get free accommodation, of which house-sitting was one. And Wise Bread colleague Maggie wrote some great tips for house-sitting etiquette. Today we'll go a little deeper into how to effectively land and enjoy a house-sitting job. Why House-Sit?

I love house-sitting because it gives me a chance to live a slice of “local life” in my chosen destination, and in some cases I've discovered places that weren't originally on my list of travel destinations. In fact, I could barely spot the Caribbean island of Grenada on a map before accepting a house-sitting gig there last October, and I loved so much that I'm back again for more house-sitting.

But I'm also not the only person who thinks house-sitting is an ideal way to see the world. If you're interested in house-sitting, you might be up against some stiff competition. Here are 10 ways to get the most out of a house-sitting membership, and to increase your chances of being noticed by homeowners.

1. Join a House-Sitting Membership Site (or Two)

I belong to a few house-sitting membership sites, and despite annual fees of approximately $50 each, they're well worth it — I make this money back tenfold in what I save on accommodation. Most sites offer worldwide opportunities; some focus on certain regions (such as Aussie House Sitters), and others (like The Caretaker Gazette) offer various volunteer and work-trade positions as well as house-sitting.

2. Sign Up For Notifications

Most house-sitting sites allow you to set notifications so new house-sitting opportunities that match your criteria (including location or available dates) arrive in your inbox. These real-time alerts are important for increasing your competitive edge (see tip 4, below).

3. Create a Comprehensive Profile

I've been contacted directly by homeowners who have asked me to house-sit based on my profile alone. In some cases they didn't even bother to put out a listing, and instead hand-picked a few house-sitting candidates they were interested in. So it's important to create a profile that tells homeowners a lot about you.

Some sites allow you to upload photos (and even video), and this is important to give you a personable side. Homeowners are taking a leap of faith by inviting a stranger to care for their homes (and sometimes pets); go the distance by making yourself a little more familiar.

Lisa Logan of TrustedHousesitters.com says it's important to provide references (previous house-sits, employer, or character references), and you'll also increase your edge with a police check. “Put yourself in the shoes of a homeowner and think about the information you would like to have. Be very clear about what experience and attributes you have that make you a great house-sitter.”

4. Reply Quickly

One of the reasons it's important to stay abreast of notifications is because you need to reply almost instantly to get noticed by a homeowner. If a house-sitting opportunity seems ideal to you, you're probably not the only person who thinks so, and homeowners can receive hundreds of applications very shortly after posting a listing.

You'll dramatically increase your chances of being noticed and considered if your application is in the first bunch.

5. Keep It Short and Sweet

Logan says “write a succinct but informative introductory email. Homeowners may receive anything up to a hundred emails, and they won't want to read anything too long. Your email links to your profile where you can really go to town and let a homeowner know all about you.”

6. Remember Why You're Needed

While keeping it short and sweet, it's important to show the homeowner exactly what you provide that they want in a house-sitter.

I recently asked a homeowner how she selected her last house-sitter couple amidst the sea of applications she received. “It's easy,” she said. “They were the only people who asked about or even took an interest in my dog!”

Reading through her listing, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize she was most concerned about providing company and care for the dog, yet most of the applicants regaled her with why they wanted to stay in her desirable destination, instead of why she might like to have them there.

7. Ask Lots of Questions

No two house-sitting gigs are created equal, so it's important for there to be an open dialogue between the homeowner and house-sitter so there are no nasty surprises. This can be easily enough achieved with emails (and a Skype conversation if possible). I've traveled halfway across the world for house-sitting jobs; you'd better believe I had my bases covered before booking that airfare.

8. Consider a Written Agreement

If you don't know what questions to ask, a written agreement can be a good place to start. When implemented, it sets out clear expectations, protecting both the homeowner and house-sitter from miscommunications.

“This encourages a homeowner to consider everything from home security to pet care, garden maintenance, emergency contacts, and more. This is a great starting point to make sure you're asking all the right questions,” says Logan.

TrustedHousesitters has a template agreement on their FAQ page, an incredibly comprehensive 17-page document covering items like who pays for what, contingency and liability plans, local numbers the house-sitter might need, and exact responsibilities of both the homeowner and house-sitter.

9. Make Sure the Finances are Fair

Some house-sitting gigs are paid, and some aren't. Some homeowners require house-sitters to pay for utilities and/or provide their own car, while others will provide all that and pay a stipend. I asked Lisa, “What gives? How do I know if I'm getting a good deal or being ripped off?”

She said “every house-sit is different, and a house-sitter should only agree to what they are comfortable with. House-sitting should be a mutually beneficial exchange and a win-win for both parties. Generally the longer an assignment, the more likely you'll be asked to pay for utilities, but that's not always the case.”

I once cared for three big dogs in a large country home with labor-intensive gardens. This was no small task, and when I considered how much money the homeowner was saving by not having to kennel the dogs and hire a gardener, I felt like I should have been paid. But their generosity in taking me out before and after their trip, showing me the area, allowing me to use their car (including adding me to their insurance), giving me free reign of the house, and inviting me to stay with them as long as I wished afterwards made it all worthwhile.

10. Be Flexible

Being flexible with your expectations, location, and living requirements will increase your chance of enjoying your house-sitting gig. This is part of what travel is about; experiencing a different side of life, in a different location, and pushing your boundaries.

Logan says “our most experienced house-sitters tell us that you need to be flexible, prepared to roll up your sleeves, and have a good sense of humor, and then you'll have a great time!”

As with many things in life, you never really know what you're going to get until you get there. Enjoy the ride!

Currently the website is very slow because of this promotion, but there are a lot of restaurants to choose from. There are more than 100 restaurants within 15 miles of where I live and I finally purchased a few of these gift certificates to restaurants I know of. The gift certificates generally expire one year from issue and never expire in California and other states where the expiration of gift certificates is illegal. Even if you do not eat out often, these gift certificates could make great stocking stuffers!

Can a Kindle Save You Money? Oprah's Coupon Code Makes It Easier

Amazon's Kindle digital reader is like a Wii for readers: Endless entertainment options, loveable hardware, extra features galore. Just today, Oprah showed how, with the addition of an digital memory card, the Kindle allows you to carry around FOUR THOUSAND books. An entire library, in your carry-on bag. Instant gratification when you want a new book or magazine. Plus blogs.

But two things have held me (and my credit card) back: price and price.

That is, the $359 price tag, and the cost to buy books and magazines to put on it. Even though Kindle books cost about $6 less than hard copies, if you get most of your books through the public libarary or second-hand sales like I do, keeping your Kindle stocked will end up costing you more.

In a moment, more on whether a Kindle could actually save you money. But right now, here's something that's convincing me to take the Kindle plunge: This morning, that booklover Oprah offered a $50 off coupon code, making the Kindle just $309.

The code is OPRAHWINFREY, and it's good through Nov. 1.

Now, to the question of whether owning a Kindle can save you money. Many have asserted it can -- in fact the Wall Street Journal argued that it can in two different columns. The best way, the Journal points out, to save money with the Kindle is not through buying books -- saving $6 a book, you'd have to buy 52 new books for it to pay for itself even with the Oprah discount.

The way a Kindle can really save you money, WSJ columnist Brett Arends says, is with its mobile data features. With Kindle's keyboard and basic Internet browser, some users may replace their cell phone's mobile data plan with the free Kindle service, saving $20 a month or more.

If you set aside your $20 a month for mobile data toward the $309 for the Kindle, you are only paying $5.75 a month for a year, then it's paid for. So if you buy one book a month, and cancel a $20 data plan, the savings WOULD pay for a Kindle in a year.

Then there are subscriptions. When I was a business reporter, I used to subscribe to the New York Times to read on the train. It currently costs about $6.70 a week to have the Times delivered to your doorstep. On Kindle, it's $13.99, a savings of more than $13 a month. So if all you did was read the NYT, it would take you two years for the device to pay for itself at the Oprah price. But other magazines, like the Wall Street Journal, currently offer better deals on the paper version than the Kindle version.

In conclusion, I'd say that SOME people would save money with a Kindle. Daily train commuters and people who spend a lot of time in airports could clearly save -- and would most benefit from the convenience of not having to go out and seek physical copies of their reading material. For me, a stay-at-home mom with no mobile data plan, there would be little to no savings.

But you know what? I kind of, really want one anyway. And my birthday is coming up. And, since I have a free trial of Amazon Prime, I could have one here tomorrow by paying just $3.99 to upgrade to overnight shipping. Oh, wait! I thought of something. I'm about to spend about $500 on a nice oak bookshelf for our dining room. To hold all those old-school books we buy at second-hand sales, etc. If I stop buying paper books, I won't have to buy any more expensive bookshelves. And there's always the savings to the environment if I convert my Chicago Tribune subscription to a digital one, even though they're the same price.

Commenters: Can you help me come up with any more justifications so my husband will read this and buy me a "money-saving" Kindle for my birthday?

Sears goes a little crazy - sweaters starting at 99 cents!

Very quick and super deal for you folks, to follow my vent on mortgages. And considering what I was saying, we need to save every penny we can. Anyway, Sears is going a little gaga and selling off a whole bunch of decent clothes for 90% off, sometimes more! How much more? Well, when you click on the link you'll be greeted by items that have been reduced from $20-$30 to just 99 cents. I'm not even sure you could find a deal like that for a used sweater at a charity store.

As usual, these deals will go quickly and sizes will start to disappear fast. So, get over to Sears and get yourself some great deals (if you need them of course). If not for yourself, you could certainly fill up on gifts just in time for the holidays. I could find no indication of the sale expiration date, so take advantage of it while you can.

To find just the school uniform deals, click on boys or girls and go from there.)
