It might even be hiding on everyday items that you didn't even think to check. With continued exposure, you can begin developing respiratory problems or allergic reactions.

Where to Look for Mold

Here's where mold might be lurking.

Toys

Recent findings of mold in children's sippy cups and teething toys have led to widespread panic among parents. However, most pediatricians agree that a small amount of mold exposure is usually okay for children, except if your baby has a mold allergy or an immune deficiency. However, your child's toys should be cleaned regularly so that they don't accumulate a significant amount of mold over time. If you notice shadowing coming from inside of the toy, or the toy smells bad, then you need to clean it to reduce the chance of you or your child getting sick from mold exposure.

Children's toys, dog toys, and bath toys can become covered in mold. Mold can also grow inside of a squeaky toy or any toys with a hole. If a toy is safe for the tub, then it's also usually safe for the top rack of the dishwasher for routine cleanings. For fabric toys, consider running them through the washer and dryer regularly.

To disinfect the toys with bleach, fill up a covered container with 1 gallon of hot water and 1/4 cup bleach. Cover and allow the toys to soak for about an hour. You can also do the same thing with a mix of 1 gallon water and 1/2 cup white vinegar. If you'd like to skip the bleach altogether, then consider boiling the toys in hot water.

Going forward, make sure that the toys are allowed to drain properly so they don't get filled up with mold again. You can also plug up the holes with a drop of hot glue to prevent water from getting trapped inside. As a general rule, if an item is not meant to be wet, don't get it wet. For instance, throwing toys not meant for the bathtub into the bath may be inviting mold into your life.

Kitchen Tools

Certain items are more susceptible to mold, such as anything that may be hiding moisture or food. For butcher block cutting boards and countertops, Reader's Digest suggests dipping a brush in a solution of 1 t bleach and 2 quarts water. Scrub the area in small circles and wipe clean with a damp cloth. The bleach solution can also be used to clean countertops and plastic tablecloths.

Your trash can be a breeding ground for mold and mildew, so on occasion, flush the garbage pail out with a hose. Use the bleach solution to scrub the can clean.

Bathroom Tools

Plastic bathroom items, such as shower mats, can become susceptible to mold. To disinfect, soak the items in hot water and bleach for about an hour. You may need to scrub the items to remove any clingy mold.

The hot water and bleach solution should work well for bathroom tools, shower caulking, and bathroom tiles. You can even mix the solution in a spray bottle to spray over grout and moldy areas.

Your shower curtain can quickly grow mold, especially if you don't stretch the curtain out so it can dry properly. Wash your curtain with a load of towels, or clean it with hot water, bleach, and a small amount of laundry detergent and allow to hang dry.

Make sure to frequently wash your bathroom towels and rugs to prevent them from growing mold. Moisture invites mold, so make sure to allow items to dry completely. You may also want to squeegee your shower walls and shower doors to speed up the drying process and prevent mold.

Outdoor Items

Just as your indoor items are susceptible to mold, your outdoor items (like tablecloths, plastic lawn furniture, and gardening tools) can also be susceptible to mold if they are exposed to moisture. Sanitize these items by washing them with the bleach and water mixture. For gardening tools or items susceptible to rust, rub a few drops of tea tree oil on the surface after drying to prevent rust.

How to Get Rid of Mold

Now that we know where mold might be hiding, here are some easy ways to get rid of it.

1. Bleach

Mix 1 gallon of hot water with 1/4 cup bleach for a quick disinfecting spray. Regardless of what you use the bleach solution on, it's important to thoroughly rinse the area with hot water afterward so that you aren't exposing your home or your family to bleach. Make sure never to mix bleach with ammonia or vinegar. Bleach is the best option if you're dealing with a nonporous surface like glass or tile.

2. Vinegar

Mix 1 cup white vinegar with 1/4 cup water. Spray it on the item's surface, let it dry, and rinse and wipe clean.

3. Tea Tree Oil

Mix 1 t tea tree essential oil with 1 cup hot water or distilled white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray it on the item's surface, allow it to sit, and wipe away.

4. Hydrogen Peroxide

Mix 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide with 1 cup water. Spray it on the item's surface, let it dry, and rinse and wipe clean.

5. Baking Soda

Mix 1/4 T baking soda into a spray bottle of water. Spray moldy surfaces, scrub, and rinse clean. You can even spray the area again and allow it to dry to prevent future growth. You can also spritz this solution into carpeting after vacuuming.

6. Store Favorites

Purchase quick cleaning solutions that can remove mold and help prevent the regrowth of mold and mildew. Items like Lysol Disinfecting Wipes and Tilex Mold and Mildew Remover can get the job done quickly. You may also want to invest in something like the OXO Good Grips Deep Clean Brush Set, which can deep clean areas that could be housing mold.

What Should You Toss?

Some items just aren't worth the trouble and should be tossed and replaced, for safety's sake. In fact, many professionals recommend throwing a toy away that shows signs of mold growth. If you notice significant mold growing inside of your child's toys, or you aren't able to clean them well enough on your own, it's best to just replace them with new toys that won't trap water.

This article is from Andrea Cannon of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. With the help of vinegar and liquid dish soap, your counters will sparkle without the use of harsh chemicals. And you'll love how this easy DIY can be made over and over with the help of a repurposed coffee canister. Made from all-natural ingredients that power through any mess, adding a few sprinkles of your favorite essential oil personalizes these eco-friendly cleaning wipes.

Keep reading for the easy directions.

RELATED: How to Make Natural Insect Repellant

What You'll Need

One-pound coffee canister with plastic lid

Paper towel roll

Sharp knife

1/2 cup vinegar

1/4 cup water

1/4 cup rubbing alcohol

1 teaspoon liquid dish soap

10 drops essential oil (optional)

Spray paint (optional)

Needle

Scissors

Directions

1. After picking up the ingredients for these homemade wipes, they cost just about nothing to make, which means you can have a can of wipes in every room of your home. Vinegar does an amazing job of cleaning up messes while naturally whisking away germs, preventing mold, and killing bacteria. And use your favorite dish soap, or make your own.

2. Repurposing an old coffee can for this DIY is a fun way to create a container that can be used over and over again. Either leave the can as is, or give it a quick coat of spray paint, inside and out, for a fun look and to keep the inside of the can from rusting.

3. To create the cleaning wipes, cut the paper towels in half using a sharp serrated knife, and squish them into the painted can. And using eco-friendly paper towels makes this DIY even greener.

4. Mix together the vinegar, dish soap, rubbing alcohol, and water in a small bowl. You can add several drops of essential oil to the wipes, which personalizes the cleaner and boosts its antibacterial powers.

5. Slowly pour the liquid over the paper towels. Once saturated, carefully remove the cardboard center, and pull a paper towel from the middle.

6. Press a craft needle through the center of the plastic lid several times, and then fit scissors through to cut a circle from the center, around one half-inch in diameter.

7. Now feed the paper towel through hole in the plastic lid and secure to the painted coffee can. Not only are these wipes great at cleaning and disinfecting your home, but they also look seriously cute adorning countertops. Simply add a few drops of water to the canister as needed to keep wipes moist.

If you love the convenience of cleaning wipes but hate the chemicals they include, check out this tutorial for easy and cheap, DIY wipes.

Guest Post Blurb:

This is a guest contribution from our friends at POPSUGAR Smart Living. And while most people use it for cleaning and disinfecting, it’s actually way more versatile than you think. In fact, as the first item in the list will show you, when you use your imagination, bleach can be an amazing product.

Here, then, are nine really cool uses for bleach. Please take the usual precautions when working with bleach, by using protective gloves (and eyewear if necessary) and keeping the room well ventilated. Also, protect anything else you do not want the bleach to react with; a big bleachy stain on your new carpet is not going to look good! (See also: Alternative Uses for Everything in Your Bathroom)

1. “Reverse Dye” Your T-Shirts

This is by far my favorite alternative use for bleach. I don’t know about you, but I have always been extremely cautious around bleach, and I try and wear white t-shirts and old jeans when using it. Sometimes, I have forgotten, and the splashes of bleach can quickly ruin your favorite clothes.

But why not turn that negative into a positive, and use bleach to create stunning t-shirt designs of your own at a fraction of the cost you’d pay in stores? All you need are some black (or dark colored) t-shirts, some bleach or a bleach pen, a toothbrush, a spray bottle, and a stencil of your own design. I have a stencil ready for my Batman shirt, and it is going to look killer. And why stop at t-shirts? Regular shirts, jackets, pants — they could all be treated this way. But if you need some inspiration, check out the designs at this subreddit called bleachshirts. This is a craze I really hope catches on.

2. A Cure for Smelly, Stinking Feet

I was wary of this one, but I’ve found the advice everywhere on the web, including eHow, Earthclinic, and Wikihow. Add about two tablespoons of bleach to a gallon of warm water, and soak your stinky feet in it for about 5-10 minutes a day for a week. That should get rid of the nasty odors. If it dries your feet out, apply baby oil to your feet after you’ve rinsed and dried them.

3. Restore White Porcelain to Its Former Glory

Bleach is not just good at bringing your white clothing back to life. You can also restore newer porcelain items (NOT antiques; you could seriously diminish their value). Simply soak paper towels in undiluted bleach, and wrap them around the porcelain item for around 20-30 minutes. Then, rinse in cold water and dry off. Your porcelain should look like new. However, don't try this on a colored porcelain — you will ruin it. Stay with white only.

4. Keep Those Fresh-Cut Flowers Looking Fresher, Longer

It’s hard to believe that something as toxic as bleach could help a living thing thrive, but it can. Well, flowers (once cut) are technically no longer living, so maybe that’s why. Just add ¼ teaspoon of bleach to each quart of water you put in the vase.

5. Weed Killer Extraordinaire

If you have some weeds poking through the patio concrete, your driveway, or your sidewalk, a little undiluted bleach will kill them. Put it in a spray bottle, and fire away. Sometimes, in just minutes, you’ll see the offending weeds turn black and die before your very eyes. HOWEVER, it can also do the same to grass, so do not use this on your lawns! Only use bleach on weeds where you are confident you want nothing else to grow.

6. Freshen Up Your Garbage Disposal and Sponges

After a while, a funky smell can start emanating from the garbage disposal or “insinkerator” in your kitchen. They do sell products that promise to freshen it up, but why fork out extra money when you have a solution ready to use right under the sink? Pour a few capfuls down the sink and let it sit for at least a few minutes — more if possible. The bleach will kill the bacteria, and the smells will be gone. While you’re at the sink, soak your sponges in a mixture of ¾ cup of bleach with a gallon of hot water. Ensure a thorough rinsing before you use them again.

7. Bring Plastic Furniture Back to Life

If you have kids, you probably have plastic furniture somewhere in the house. And it will be dirty. You may also have plastic garden furniture looking well past its prime. Take 1 gallon of hot water, add ½ cup of bleach, and clean it with a cloth or sponge. You should see the revival take place before your very eyes. Then, rinse with clean water several times before letting the kids come back and wreck it again!

8. Add a Sparkle to Old Glassware

If your glasses and glass dishes are starting to look a bit cloudy, bleach can help you restore their sparkle and shine. Just add a teaspoon of bleach to hot soapy water and wash them in it, followed by a buffing with a dry kitchen towel.

9. Emergency Water Purification

Drinking bleach? Seriously? Well, it’s not as easy as that, and it must be done following strict instructions. But if you do find yourself needing fresh water, perhaps in a natural disaster that stops the flow to your home, then here’s what you can do (courtesy of the Washington State Department of Health):

If boiling is not possible, treat water by adding liquid household bleach, such as Clorox or Purex. Household bleach is typically between 5% and 6% chlorine. Avoid using bleaches that contain perfumes, dyes and other additives. Be sure to read the label.

Place the water (filtered, if necessary) in a clean container. Add the amount of bleach according to the table below.

Mix thoroughly and allow to stand for at least 30 minutes before using (60 minutes if the water is cloudy or very cold).

Do you have any other cool and unusual uses for bleach? Or perhaps the Resurrection. Maybe even cute little bunnies.

Not for me. I think of vinegar, much more so than any other time of year. It’s used to dye the requisite hard-boiled eggs, and in my family we pour it on top of boiled cabbage at Easter dinner.

When I thought about vinegar for a moment, I knew there had to be tons of applications for the acidic accoutrement. And there are. A quick search will reveal plenty of practical ways to use it. (See also: 30 Household Products Vinegar Can Replace and 254 Uses for Vinegar)

The practical posts have been done to death, however, which is why I sent out a query to my contacts asking for unusual uses for vinegar. The responses I received were quite surprising — and one of them might have made me blush. Take a look at the tips.

1. Fix Anemic Plants

"When your large garden plants like rhododendrons and andromeda are showing signs of anemia (that would be pale leaves but darker green veins), soak rusty nails (not the Drambuie kind) or rusty anythings you might have around the garden in white vinegar for a few weeks. Then dilute the solution and pour it around the plant as far out as the leaves spread." — David Eisner

2. Remove Salt

"Diluted vinegar is a great way to remove salt residue from suede and leather shoes." — Allison Dent

3. Try to Have a Girl

"My friend, who is a midwife, after having two sons and desperately wanting a girl, gave herself a vinegar douche...It’s a fact — something to do with changing the chemical balance of the womb lining, which increases your chances of having a girl. It worked!" — Caroline Cheshire

4. Eliminate Sunblock Stains

"To remove sunblock stains on sheets and clothing, boil the vinegar, then dissolve baking soda in it. Dip the stained area in the mixture, set it in the sun to dry, and the stain will be removed." — Lara Goldman

5. Banish Blood

"To remove blood, use room-temperature vinegar, dissolve baking soda, soak the stain, and rinse. Do not use warmed vinegar, as it will set the stain instead." — Lara Goldman

6. Soothe Sunburns

"To reduce sting of sunburn, pour vinegar on it, and the sting will go away." — Lara Goldman

7. Remove Bruises

"To make a bruise disappear, put vinegar in microwave until it’s as warm as you can take it. Put sea salt in the vinegar and soak a cloth. Compress for five to seven minutes or until the cloth cools. The bruise will go away." — Lara Goldman

8. Settle Your Stomach

"The best use for vinegar: Use it instead of antacids. A couple of tablespoons will help your digestion. My friends who have used antacids have confirmed this. Furthermore, a couple tablespoons will stabilize your blood sugar." — Susan Schenck

9. Define Dye

"Half to one cup of distilled white vinegar in your laundry helps set the dye on clothing the first time you wash the item. I'll keep the bathrooms respectfully clean, I'll vacuum every couple of weeks, and I'll break out the feather duster to keep cat hair at bay. But every few months, I tackle a room and give it a good, deep cleaning instead of waiting once a year to give my entire place a thorough spring cleaning. Not only does this save me time in the long run, but as a person who is constantly sniffling, I know that fewer dust particles are healthier for me than a tabletop lined with a layer of film. (See also: Control Your Allergies with Regular Cleaning)

Since I don't necessarily love cleaning (who does?), I attack a room efficiently. I also don't want to use harsh chemicals that could irritate my allergies even more than the dust, so I've found one product that is multi-functional, inexpensive, and biodegradable — Simple Green. It comes in a gallon sized container in concentrate; my last gallon lasted ten years, which equated to about $1 annually in cleaning solution. Since I can dilute it to meet my needs, it's a flexible, inexpensive, and safe product. I use it for countertops, sinks, showers, and floors in different dilutions.

I also like to use white vinegar for shower doors and mirrors, and it can be added to baking soda and lemon juice for a gentler cleaning solution. These are common kitchen ingredients that have universal uses and are environmentally safe.

Cleaning Method

I don't like to spend more than a couple of hours cleaning at any one time, so when it's time for "spring cleaning," I'll choose one large room or two smaller rooms to focus on. Since I only deep clean every few months, this is the time to focus on the details and not just the parts of the room that are visible or obvious. I also work top to bottom so that the floor is the final surface I clean.

Baseboards

I have a habit of looking at other people's baseboards. I can tell when they've never been cleaned or dusted, ever, and that just irks me. During my deep cleaning, I make sure to wipe down the baseboards with a damp sponge and follow up with a dry hand towel after a good sweeping, and I may follow up with a vacuum around the baseboards using my extension tube. I usually clean the floors after the baseboards since it's the finale to a room.

Ledges

There are ledges or lips of furniture and appliances in every room. I make sure to wipe down the ledge of the bathtub, mirrors, and dishwasher. These are often-missed parts that gather dust.

Backsplashes

The backsplash behind a kitchen or bathroom sink needs a good cleaning. Since vertical surfaces are a little more difficult to clean, I often miss them during my weekly turbo-cleans, but I make sure I give them a good scrub during my spring-cleaning sessions.

Corners and Hard-to-Reach Areas

I normally look at hidden corners, like behind a toilet. It's another area that tells a lot about a person's cleaning habits. Again, during my deep cleaning of a particular room, I make a point to clean behind the toilet and in every corner of that room. For the ceiling corners, I use a feather duster to remove any cobwebs that may have appeared between cleanings.

Appliances

I usually clean the top of my stove during my turbo-cleaning of the kitchen, but not the front. I focus on the front and interior of each appliance during a deep clean. Since I focus on only one or two rooms at the most during these kinds of cleanings, adding the appliances doesn't tack on that much more time.

Bathtubs and Showers

Again, I focus on one or two rooms so I don't overwhelm myself.

Visible Areas

Since I often clean the visible areas of every room every week (or 10 days if I'm feeling lazy), these sections don't need as much attention during my deep-cleaning sessions. Instead, I quickly give these a once-over:

Counters: Normally cleaned weekly, so they aren't that dirty come spring cleaning.

Toilets: Again, cleaning weekly means they aren't untouchable. Yuck!

Floors: Vacuumed or mopped, weekly cleanings take care of most of the dust and dirt.

Mirrors: These aren't too terribly difficult to include in weekly cleanings.

You might have noticed I left out windows. I've never really cleaned my windows, as they don't seem to get too terribly messy. Of course, that might be because I don't have kids. However, whenever I see some fingerprints, I'll quickly wipe them down with a damp cloth.

Minimizing my cleaning time by tackling one or two rooms at a time makes it a bearable chore. There's never as good a time to spring into cleaning than now.

This article is from Little House of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
