With so many different sprays available, it can be hard to choose just one. That’s why we’ve found the best hairsprays available, so you can begin choosing the right one for your hair style.

There are different hairsprays best suited for each different hair type. You can also choose from flexible, medium, strong, and super hold, to get the hold and flexibility need. Regardless of which hairspray you choose, you’ll want to find something that offers lasting hold, shine, and humidity protection, so that your style stays perfect all day.

What Is Hairspray?

Hairspray is a product that can be sprayed onto the hair to hold your style in place. It usually comes in a spray aerosol can. The first modern hairsprays were developed in the 1940s and were damaging to the hair, over a prolonged use. Today, the formulas are much gentler and can even improve the condition of your hair, so it will be healthier after each use.

Hairspray can be spritzed directly onto the hair, about 6–12 inches from your head. You can also apply it to your brush and comb it through your hair to target flyaways. You can even spray your bobby pins with hairspray before putting them in to provide extra hold. If you really want to get more from your hairspray, you can even use the can as a styling tool by placing your just-styled hair around the can itself and allowing it to cool (like Velcro rollers). This will leave you with significantly more volume. Start slow with hairspray because you can always add more, but if you add too much, your hair will feel crispy, crunchy, and brittle, no matter which hairspray you choose.

Top 5 Hairsprays

Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray

Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray is one of Amazon’s bestselling hairsprays for a reason. If you want a hairspray that will give you that “just out of the salon” feeling, then this is the one for you. Professional hairstylists commonly recommend it because it provides long-lasting hold, while leaving the hair healthier after every use. The lightweight, workable hairspray is packed with great ingredients, like argan oil and vitamin E. It will hold your style all day and provide flexible hold, without leaving any brittleness, crunchiness, or sticky residue behind. It can be brushed out easily and won't weigh hair down, so it is ideal for soft, natural styles. This is ideal for all hair types, including curly, dry, and fine hair. There are various finishes available, so you can the amount of hold you need.

It provides a reflective shine shield that will combat frizz, humidity, and flyaways, leaving your hair glossy without weighing it down or making it look greasy. It smells great (according to nearly everyone who’s tried it) and leaves the hair feeling healthy, looking shiny, and remaining smooth all day. In fact, it was selected by Real Simple as the best shine boosting hairspray. This is the most expensive option on our list, but reviewers tend to agree that it is worth every penny. Total Beauty selected it as one of the best hairsprays because every reader who reviewed it on their site gave it a perfect score.

Currently $19.84 on Amazon

L'Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray Extra Strong Hold

L'Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray Extra Strong Hold is an industry standard, commonly used backstage at runway shows, red carpet events, and photo shoots. Fortunately, there are a variety of shampoos available for all different hair types, including volumizing, color-safe, frizz control, root boost, straightening, and moisturizing varieties. The right one for you will depend on your hair’s condition and your personal preferences. It can take some time and experimentation to find the right shampoo that will leave your locks clean, shiny, soft, manageable, and volumized. That’s why we’ve found some of the best shampoos available to help get you started.

What Is Shampoo?

Shampoo is a hair product made of water, cleansing agents, and foaming agents, designed to cleanse the hair and scalp by removing oil, dirt, and product buildup that may be weighing down your hair. Some people prefer to wash their hair every day, while some can go for up to five days at a time without washing. Experts agree that it is not good to wash your hair everyday because it can strip your hair of its natural oils, so try to wash every other day at most. Start by creating a lather at the scalp and then carry the suds down the length of your hair. Then, rinse it out and follow up with conditioner for best results.

Top 5 Shampoos

Dove Men+Care Fresh Clean 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner

The Dove Men+Care Fresh Clean 2 in 1 Shampoo + Conditioner offers the perfect solution for any busy man and will save you money on your hair care items. Whether you choose olive, jojoba, argan, coconut, or one of the many others out there, your hair will thank you for the instant hydration.

After using one of these highly beneficial oils, you will notice an instant boost in the health and appearance of your hair. It will feel softer and more moisturized, and should be easier to style. The more you use the oil, the better the results will be over time. With continued use, your hair will grow faster, longer, and healthier than ever before.

Starting Out With Oils

Oil should be used at least weekly on the hair and scalp. It can also be used more often on the ends of your hair just to keep your locks moisturized and manageable. Oil can be used on wet or dry hair, either before or after washing or styling. They can also be added directly to your deep conditioning treatments or DIY hair masks.

Some oils, like castor oil, can be too heavy for fine hair. They are more appropriate for coarser hair types. If you aren't sure of which oil is right for your hair, start with argan, coconut, or olive oil, as they are ideal for all hair types. From there, you can play with different oils and DIY recipes to see what works best for your hair.

Remember, the whole point of ditching your chemical-laden hair products for beneficial oils is to cut out the extra ingredients. So, it's important to go pure and natural when it comes to oils so that you can experience the maximum benefits, without any added fillers. Look for organic or all natural versions of your favorite oil at your local grocery, beauty, or specialty food store.

Here are some types to consider.

1. Argan Oil

Argan oil comes from the kernels of the argan tree in Morocco. Moroccan argan oil will make your hair healthy, shiny, and smooth. It is particularly beneficial for people with especially dry, coarse, frizzy, or bleach-damaged hair. It instantly penetrates the hair shaft to thoroughly repair each strand. It is packed with protein, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids, which can moisturize your strands, leaving them softer, thicker, and more manageable.

The multitasking oil can also be used to cleanse and hydrate your skin and face, strengthen your nails, hydrate your cuticles, soften dry skin and cracked heels, remove makeup, and much more.

2. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil comes from the meat of mature coconuts. It is packed with protein, vitamin E, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, all of which can help keep your hair and scalp healthy. It can instantly penetrate the hair, making it longer, stronger, shinier, thicker, more nourished, and less prone to breakage. It will moisturize, improve growth, and repair damage.

Coconut oil is great for all hair types, including your facial hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes. In fact, with continued use, your eyebrows and lashes should appear darker, fuller, and less unruly. Coconut oil has antibacterial properties and can also be used to cleanse and hydrate your skin and face, strengthen your nails, hydrate your cuticles, and even remove makeup. It can also be ingested but you will see the fastest, most drastic results from applying it directly to your hair.

3. Olive Oil

Olive oil is produced by pressing whole olives and is full of antioxidants and vitamins A and E. If your hair has been stripped of moisture due to over-styling or chemical damage, olive oil is the one for you.

It is ideal for anyone with a dry scalp or hair because of its moisturizing properties. It can improve growth by penetrating the hair to reverse damage and moisturize each strand. Your hair will look stronger, shinier, and healthier after every use. Olive oil works for most hair types, even fine, so if you are new to oils, or don't have many other oils in your kitchen or bathroom cabinet, then olive oil will do the trick. It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties, which can help prevent and treat dandruff. You can also enjoy some of the benefits by using olive oil to cook with, but you will notice more substantial results from applying it directly to your hair and scalp.

4. Castor Oil

Castor oil is especially ideal for anyone looking to grow their hair. It is obtained from castor beans and is packed with essential fatty acids and vitamin E, and can help make your hair grow quickly. It is especially ideal for dry or coarser hair types because of its intense moisturization and conditioning properties.

Along with helping to reverse hair loss, every time you use this oil, your hair will look thicker, shinier, stronger, softer, and will be more manageable. It can also moisturize the scalp, prevent split ends, put a stop to dandruff, and repair damage. Castor oil is also a great treatment for your eyebrows and eyelashes. With continued use, they will be darker, thicker, and less unruly.

5. Macadamia Oil

Macadamia oil is intended only for the hair. It comes from the macadamia nut and can restore dry and damaged strands from the inside out. If your hair has been subjected to a lot of heat or chemical treatments, then this restorative oil has the antioxidants and healthy fats necessary to help your hair repair itself. Your hair will appear shinier, tangle and frizz free, softer, thicker, and more manageable.

This is one of the most intensive oils available, so it is intended for very dry or damaged hair (it can also help make your hair dry faster). Macadamia oil can also be ingested, but you will see the fastest, most drastic results from applying it directly to your hair.

6. Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is a colorless, odorless oil that can help moisturize your scalp, so it is ideal for people with dandruff or a dry scalp. It's great for dry or damaged hair because it will moisturize every strand, leaving your hair feeling thicker, softer, healthier, shinier, more manageable, and more hydrated. It can also help with hair growth and a sunburned or sensitive scalp. The multitasking oil can also be used to cleanse and hydrate your skin and face.

7. Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil is made by harvesting the lavender flowers to extract the essential oils. It is intended for all hair types and can be used on its own or added to a carrier oil, like argan oil or olive oil, for greater benefits.

Massaging lavender essential oil into your scalp can reduce hair loss and promote growth by stimulating your scalp and enhancing blood circulation. It will leave your hair healthier and shinier, making it especially ideal for dry or damaged hair. It is also recommended for people with dandruff or an itchy scalp because it can treat these issues in no time. The soothing scented oil can also help with insomnia, headaches, and can even be used to cleanse and hydrate your skin and face.

8. Hot Oil Treatments

For the fastest, most effective results, you'll want to try a hot oil treatment. This simple DIY treatment will leave your hair softer, stronger, and healthier. You can also take staple oils (like castor oil or olive oil) and mix them with a bit of coconut oil, avocado oil, almond oil, or tea tree oil for a custom hair growth blend. You can also purchase a hot oil self-heating hair treatment for instant results, but the DIY solution may be just as effective and much more affordable.

To DIY the hot oil treatment, simply place your oil(s) in a bowl and into the microwave for 10 second intervals until the oil is hot, but cool enough for you to handle. Using your fingertips, massage the oil into your scalp and all the way down to your ends. Leave the oil on for anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours, depending on how badly damaged or how coarse your hair is. You may need to shampoo twice to get all of the oil out, and then condition and style as normal.

Many people have seen a drastic increase in hair growth and strength by adding a scalp massage to their hot oil treatment. In fact, it is scientifically proven that scalp massages can improve the flow of blood into the scalp, stimulating hair follicles and boosting hair growth. Gently massage your scalp in a circular motion using the warm oil. If possible, flip your head upside down when you do this as this can help boost circulation, stimulate the hair follicles, and make your hair grow even more quickly.

What are the best oils for your hair? Fortunately, you don't have to spend a fortune to look like a million bucks. Try these simple, effective ways to save money on beauty, beyond just the coupons and store loyalty programs.

1. Don't Overuse Products

In most cases, a smaller amount of product than you think is enough to get the desired results. For instance, you never need to use more than a nickel-sized amount of shampoo, conditioner, face wash, face moisturizer, or leave-in conditioner. Any more than that, and you're just wasting product (and money). The same goes for makeup; start small and build up your look. Not only will this save you money in the long run, but your lotions and makeup will last longer, so you don't have to replace them as often.

2. Look for Cheaper Alternatives

There is a drugstore dupe for nearly every high-end cosmetic. You can use sites like Dupethat to figure out which cheap alternative matches your favorite color and formula. DIY recipes are also a great alternative to your favorite masks and scrubs, so start looking for free recipes online using ingredients you already have in your kitchen. (See also: 9 DIY Beauty Masks Made From Food)

3. Get More Out of Old Makeup

If your makeup is still unexpired but in bad condition, you can probably breathe new life into it. For instance, by adding four to five eye drops into your mascara tube, it will re-moisturize the dried out wand and formula, making it work like new again. You can also place a closed tube of mascara into a cup of hot water to warm the solution and get a few more uses out it. Just make sure you throw your mascara away after three months of usage.

You can also repair any broken eyeshadow or powder palette by simply reforming it with alcohol.

4. Use Multitasking Ingredients

Multitasking ingredients can save you money, clear space in your travel bag, and actually speed up your morning routine. They can help you get the biggest bang for your buck. Here are three easy ones:

Use oil as a makeup remover;

Try baby powder as dry shampoo; and,

Use lipstick as impromptu blush.

Some of the best multitasking ingredients are oils (like coconut and argan oils), Vaseline, and baby powder.

5. Use Multitasking Products

Multitasking products can help save you money because you can get the results of several products by just using one item. BB cream is the perfect example of a multitasker, because it can replace your sunscreen, serum, moisturizer, anti-aging products, and even your foundation.

Your eyeshadow is another great example because it can also be used as an eyeliner, eyebrow powder, blush, highlighter, or bronzer. Eyeshadow can even be transformed into different shades of lip gloss and nail polish.

6. Return Beauty Items That Don't Work

Most drugstores and beauty stores will gladly accept your return. In fact, many stores (like Walgreens) pride themselves on the ease of their return policy, in the event that a certain shade of lipstick or foundation doesn't work on you. Not every shade or formulation of makeup will work for every person, so don't waste your money if you get home and decide it doesn't look right on you.

7. Buy Splurge Items on Sale

Shopping for beauty products when everything is on sale will make you feel less guilty about your splurge. Certain items, like makeup sets, go on sale after the holidays, which would be a great time to stock up on whatever you think you might need for yourself or for future gifts.

8. Use Every Last Drop

When you're down to the last bit of shampoo, conditioner, lotion, or makeup, it's time to get creative. You can cut the bottle open to scrape out any last bit, use a Q-tip to dig out any leftover foundation, or invest in an affordable beauty spatula so that you never have to throw out another drop. You can also use a damp makeup sponge to cut down on the amount of foundation applied.

9. Use Ebates

Ebates will give you cash back on certain purchases, including beauty buys. For instance, they offer 4% cash back on all Sephora purchases.

10. Take Advantage of Recycling Policies

If you gather up six empty MAC containers, they will recycle them for you and you can even pick out a free lip gloss as payment for your empties. Stores like Lush and Kiehl's offer similar programs.

11. Leave Items in the Online Shopping Cart Overnight

This trick can save you money on any makeup, clothing, or furniture purchases. It doesn't always work, but when it does, you'll be glad you waited the night. By putting items in your cart, but never completing the order, the store thinks you forgot about the items and will often send you an email reminder that you have items in your cart that need to be checked out. They will usually offer a promo code to entice you to complete the purchase, so you can save more on items that you already planning on purchasing.

12. Stop Going to the Salon so Often

DIY hair color, at-home manicures, and homemade face and hair masks are all the rage these days. Take advantage of the never-ending trend and save money in the process. Don't waste your time or money at the salon if you can achieve similar results at home for a fraction of the cost. Many salons will also offer free bang trends or discounted prices on hair trims, so make sure to ask what your salon offers. Hot temperatures and higher humidity, as well as fun summer activities, can affect your skin, hair, and body. Check out these beauty tips and hacks for the summer.

1. Double Cleanse

The sweat, salt, and sunscreen that accumulate on your skin in the summer can wreak havoc on your complexion. You may need to up your cleansing game in order to keep pores clean. If you haven't tried double cleansing yet, now's a great time to start. In the evening only, cleanse first with an oil-based cleanser (like Clinique's Take the Day Off Balm), and then with a gentle gel or foam cleanser (try Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Cleanser). The oil cleanser will get the gunk out of your pores, and the second cleanser will remove any remaining oil or grime, making your face a fresh canvas for moisturizing.

2. Exfoliate and Moisturize Your Body

With swimsuit weather upon us, you want all that visible skin to be smooth and flawless, right? Once a week, try using a sugar body scrub or an exfoliating cloth (try Salux cloths for a cheap but effective option), and be sure to moisturize afterwards.

For super soft skin, try first slathering on an aloe gel (put it in the fridge first for a refreshing boost), and then a layer of body lotion or cream, like Cerave Moisturizing Cream. Farewell, alligator skin!

3. Protect Yourself From the Sun

You know you should be wearing sunscreen daily during the summer, especially since the sun's rays account for 80% of wrinkles and visible aging, but did you know that you should be reapplying every two hours? The active ingredients in sunscreens break down with sun exposure, or can get rubbed or sweated off, so be sure to slather it on frequently. Also, with the UV index being so much higher in the summer, wear a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

It can be a pain to reapply sunscreen, especially if you're also wearing makeup. Consider wearing a tinted sunscreen instead, like Bare Republic Mineral Tinted Face Sunscreen SPF 30 or Aveeno Positively Radiant CC Cream With Sunscreen, to make reapplying easier.

4. Check Your Sunscreen's Expiration Date

My husband recently went surfing and used an old sunscreen that his friend had found in a closet somewhere. Who knows how old it was. Although he slathered it on and waited the appropriate time before going in the water, he still got bright red within less than two hours. The compounds in sunscreens break down over time, especially in heat and light, so be sure you're using a fresh bottle.

5. Cool Down With a Mist

One of my favorite ways to refresh and cool down during the summer is to spritz myself with a fine facial mist. It not only cools me down, it also delivers extra moisture to my dehydrated skin .

To control oil in the middle of the day without disturbing your makeup, try spraying your face with a facial mist (like Caudalie Grape Water or First Aid Beauty Vitamin Hydrating Mist), and then blotting gently with oil blotting paper.

6. Protect Your Hair Before Swimming

Chlorine can do a number on your hair, leaving it dry, stripped, and lifeless. Protect your hair before going in the pool by massaging leave-in conditioner or a natural oil into your hair (coconut oil works well and is cheap). This will repel the water and prevent your hair from getting dried out. If you don't have time to prep your hair, wetting your locks in the shower and tying up your hair before going in the pool will help it to absorb fewer chemicals. Be sure to shampoo your hair after swimming to remove the chlorine.

7. Switch to a Gel Moisturizer

Warmer temperatures day and night mean that you might not need a heavy moisturizer during the summer. If your usual cream is making your skin feel greasy or weighed down, try switching to a lightweight gel moisturizer such as Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel. Don't skip the moisturizer entirely, though — that's a surefire way to dehydrate your skin.

8. Drink Lots of Water

It goes without saying that you should be drinking lots of water during the hot weather, but an added side benefit of staying hydrated is that your skin will stay brighter and more glowy. Keep a bottle of water handy for on-the-go hydration — for the sake of both your skin and your health.

9. Switch to Cream Blush and Waterproof Eyeliner

Powder blushes wear off quickly when you're swimming and sweating, so in the summer, consider switching to a cream blush, which have better staying power. Plus, who wants to fuss with a compact and brush when you're having fun in the sun? Apply cream blush with your fingertips, blend, and go!

Similarly, you may have to switch your eyeliner to a waterproof formula to prevent it from sliding off your lids. Be sure you have a good eye makeup remover to take it off without scrubbing.

10. Wear a Big Hat

Even the best of us forget to reapply sunscreen, so your next line of defense is a wide-brimmed hat (preferably a crushable one that you can throw into your beach tote). Not only does sun damage cause skin cancer and the majority of visible aging, but it can also cause discoloration and uneven skin tone (and I'm talking about big sun spots, not just cute little freckles). Wear a hat during the hottest part of the day, and your skin will thank you many years down the road.

11. Fake a Tan

With the sunscreen and big hats that you'll be wearing, how will you get that sun-kissed glow? Well, chances are you'll still tan slightly even while wearing sunscreen, but if you want an even, more bronzed look, self-tanner and bronzer are ways to deepen the color of your skin without damaging it or increasing your risk of skin cancer.

12. Invest in Makeup Removing Wipes

Late nights and fireside chats on the beach may end with you falling into bed without washing your face. Minimize the damage by using a makeup removing wipe before bed (keep them on your bedside table, so you'll have no excuse). Bonus if you also keep a moisturizer by your bed to use after you wipe.

13. Lay Off the Acids and Retinoids

AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) such as glycolic acid can make your skin more photosensitive, as can retinol, an ingredient commonly used in anti-aging products. They can exacerbate hyperpigmentation, melasma, and skin discoloration caused by the sun, and can cause you to burn more easily. Check your products for these ingredients and use them only at night, if at all. If you do use them (even only at night), be sure to wear a good facial sunscreen during the day, as AHAs and retinoids can be photosensitizing up to a week after you use them.

14. Shampoo Less Frequently

Shampooing frequently can strip your hair of its natural oils. When combined with UV damage, chlorine, and other environmental stressors, it's a recipe for straw-dry hair. You can go longer between shampoos if you use a dry shampoo to absorb the excess oil. You can also rinse your hair with warm water between shampoos to rinse away excess dirt and grease without fully stripping your hair.

When you do shampoo, use a gentle sulfate-free shampoo that won't be as drying and stripping as harsher shampoos (I actually shampoo my hair with Cerave Foaming Facial Cleanser, a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser meant for the face, which sounds crazy, but my hair has never been healthier and most importantly, my scalp doesn't itch).

15. Avoid Silicone Hair Products

Many hair products, from conditioners to styling products, contain silicone, which coats the strands of hair giving them a temporary smoothing effect. The problem is, silicone also prevents hydrating products from penetrating your hair, leading to dryness. They also attract dirt and make your hair feel greasy, and require a strong shampoo to remove.

Consider giving your hair a break by using a silicone-free conditioner. I like the Honest Co. Conditioner, which contains natural oils and makes my hair super soft without weighing it down. Shea Moisture and Living Proof conditioners are also silicone free.

16. Use a Primer

Summer is prime time (har har) to use a primer that will keep your makeup from sliding off your face. It will also help to fill in pores and fine lines so you can get that flawless look without having to pile on the makeup. I'm personally partial to Smashbox Photo Finish Primer.

17. Skip the Foundation

The last thing you want to worry about during summer R&R is a thick layer of foundation dripping off your face. Lighten up your makeup by using a BB cream, (I like Dr. Jart+ Premium) which combines moisturizer, SPF, and a light foundation in one. If you want to go even lighter, CC creams are designed to even out your complexion without weighing down your skin (try Peter Thomas Roth CC Cream in your correct shade). You can also use a tinted moisturizer or sunscreen for a bit of coverage, or go bare-faced with just touches of concealer and blush.

18. Cool Down With DIY Beauty Treatments

Try a yogurt/honey face mask to soothe a sunburn: blend together half a cup each of whole milk yogurt and honey and slather all over your face. Put your tub of aloe gel in the fridge so it will be nice and cold when you need it. Slice a cool cucumber into rounds and place them on your skin (especially your eyes). Rinse your face with brewed and cooled camomile or green tea to refresh and calm your skin. If you hair feels dry or brittle, there are easy treatments that you can make right in your own kitchen. Here are a few ideas. (See also: Homemade Hair Conditioners)

1. Hair Masks

Hair masks are usually overnight treatments in which the scalp and follicles are coated with a moisturizer and then wrapped (try saran wrap or a shower cap). The end goal is to moisturize and to create a healthier head of hair.

One of the most infamous hair masks found right in your kitchen is...mayonnaise! It may sound gross, but full-fat mayonnaise has been used for years to add shine and luster to hair. Why use full-fat? It has the highest amount of fatty acids, which helps to give hair a boost on shine. (See also: Surprising Uses for Mayonnaise)

If you're fighting a lot of dandruff, especially during the winter when the air inside is dry, applying a yogurt mask to the hair and scalp will help nourish and moisturize dry and frizzy strands. Its high levels of lactic acid also help to stimulate hair growth and can help remove any leftover product buildup.

Coconut oil is also great to help restore shine to hair and has been used for centuries in India to create fuller and smoother locks. Virgin and organic coconut oil are best, as they have the least amount of manufacturing refinement and are still chocked full of fatty acid.

2. Hair Rinses

Hair rinses are often used to remove buildup and oil from the hair. Add any of the following herbs to water and use as a rinse after shampooing. (See also: Natural DIY Facial Products)

Basil, which has antibacterial and tonic properties, has been used to bring luster to hair and to invigorate the scalp while cleansing the hair.

Parsley is soothing, plus it has cleansing properties and can be used to help clean salt from the follicles after a long day at the beach.

Rosemary is full of antioxidants and can add a sheen to dull hair and improve shine. (Plus rosemary has also been used as an aphrodisiac in Mediterranean cultures. Just saying…)

Sage is a stimulant on the scalp and has been known to color gray hair. It has astringent properties, so it is great to use on an oily scalp.

3. Olive Oil Hot Treatment

When hair becomes brittle and dry, it can lead to breakage and flyaways. Hot oil treatments help to bind the oil to the hair shaft, which locks in moisture to the follicle and can prevent further damage. Just like the hot oil treatments available at drugstores, using warm olive oil on your hair can help brittle hair become soft again. Heat the oil to a temperature that is soothing but will not burn the scalp and apply in the shower, then rinse vigorously.

4. Natural Hair Tints

While herbs cannot drastically alter hair color, they can help temporarily compliment the natural hues. And even though many of these aren't commonly found in kitchen pantries, you can pick them right out of your garden and infuse in water (avoid using lemon juice, as it may be too harsh for regular use and can strip the follicle of its natural oils).

Chamomile flowers are famously known for creating a soothing bath, but they're also great as a universal hair treatment. They give a lighter appearance to medium hair, bring out golden highlights on brown hair, and can create very soft highlights in dark brown/black hair. (See also: Dye Your Own Hair Without a Disaster)

Calendula (or Marigolds) can add an auburn tint to darker hair, and infuse a strawberry blonde appearance to lighter hair.

Do you use any natural, find in your kitchen hair care products? Do you regard your coiffeur as one of your confidants?

Personally, I've never felt that kind of attachment, towards a hairdresser anyway. It just goes against my spending nature. Right now, my budget is tighter than my thighs in Spanx. (See also: How to Sell Your Hair for Cash)

But if you find yourself tightening your belt at the same time your salon has increased its prices, you might want to do what I do; give your wallet a break, and have a friendly affair with a new stylist. No need to feel guilty about changing hairdressers for a day.

And cost? What cost? Paying less doesn't mean you won't get more. Au contraire! As a hair model, you can get a high-class haircut for cheap — or free. (See also: Sitting Pretty: How to Get Salon Services for Free)

For example, I use the hair care services at the world class salons of Frederic Fekkai, where services are provided for free or at a fraction of their regular cost in exchange for the use of your lovely locks during workshop days. I've enjoyed many luxury hair experiences primarily at the Manhattan locations, and each time I've received a customized cut to suit my lifestyle.

There are three Frederic Fekkai locations in New York and more across the U.S. — but Frederic isn't the only game in town. There are other high end hair salons with similar hair modeling programs. Bumble and Bumble, Festoon, and Ouidad are just a few. And if you just don't have the heart to switch hairdressers, check with your current salon about their ongoing training programs. You could end up being a hair model for your own stylist. Also check your own salon's website or Facebook fan page for upcoming opportunities.

There are some general guidelines to follow when you're hair modeling. For starters, here's the skinny on becoming a Fekkai model.

1. Register for the Program Online

For Frederic Fekkai, you'll need to attach a headshot with the simple, one page registration form, so have a photograph ready to upload (candid shots are fine).

2. Be Flexible, and Keep Close to Your Inbox

Appointments are booked by a representative of the Frederic Fekkai education team, and everything is handled via email. Once registered, you will be sent a list of available times and dates for services to choose from. Respond quickly (as in immediately), and await confirmation.

3. Be Patient

Workshops fill up very quickly and it may be weeks (or longer) before scheduling a mutually convenient appointment for the service you want. Hair models are needed for blow outs, haircuts, as well as hair color.

4. Get Excited, and Don't Be Scared!

While the person who styles your hair might be new to the Fekkai team, a well seasoned Creative Director always oversees, ensuring a gorgeous outcome, promise.

5. Be Prompt

Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled appointment. Unforeseen things can and do happen. Stylists get the flu, too. Models are taken on a first come, first served basis, and workshops fill up fast. If you aren't there on time, you could get bumped.

6. Be Reasonable, and Don't Be Greedy

While most services are free, gratuities are gladly accepted. At Frederic Fekkai, if you are having single process hair color, there is a $10 fee, payable in cash. Salon services are limited to once every three months. (See also: What Are Your Tipping Rules?)

7. Lose the Guilt, and Eat Something!

Once you have a great new style, you'll forget all that nonsense about cheating on your hairdresser. And, you'll have plenty left in your purse for a really nice lunch. Spa treatments are definitely little things with a cost that adds up quickly. Fortunately, you can give yourself a number of spa treatments from the comfort of your home at a fraction of the price. While it’s not the same as having someone wait on you hand and foot, these at-home treatments can keep you looking and feeling your best in tough times. (See also: Spa Bathrooms on the Cheap)

1. Manicures

Manicures are easy to do yourself. What’s more, they provide you with a meditative experience. Get that old nail polish off, and trim your nails to just a bit longer than your preferred length. Then file them into the shape you would like. Soak your hands in warm water for ten minutes before applying a cuticle oil and pushing your cuticles back. Exfoliate your hands, apply a little moisturizer, and get ready to put on polish. Your hands will be looking great at a fraction of the cost.

2. Deep Conditioning

You can give yourself a deep conditioning at home with natural ingredients. To make your own deep conditioner, you’ll need a jar of natural mayonnaise and half an avocado. Mash the avocado into the mayonnaise, and work it into your hair. Then cover the hair with a shower cap and a warm, wet towel. Read a book or magazine for 20 minutes, then rinse your hair out.

3. Massage

No, you don’t have to press your significant other into service for this one. You can give yourself a massage that will have you feeling soothed and relaxed. Start at the base of your head with your left hand massaging your right side. Work your way down, then switch. Use your fingers to get the small areas of your spine. You can also easily massage your hands and feet. While nothing beats a good shiatsu, this will do the trick in a pinch.

4. Aromatherapy

Have a good soak in the tub with homemade aromatherapy treatments. The base of all aromatherapy bath salts is one part sea salt, two parts baking soda, and one part Epsom salts. Mix it all up, and add a few drops at a time of your favorite essential oil scents. Scents like vanilla and chamomile are popular for relaxing in the tub. Sit and soak in the tub for as long as you need to and get the aromatherapy spa experience at home.

5. Waxing

While it’s not generally a good idea to wax your more delicate bits at home, you can wax your eyebrows, legs, and arms without great difficulty. Roller waxes are perfect for the novice who doesn’t want to get wax all over their bathroom. Shower before you wax, and pick a wax with moisturizer in it if you have sensitive skin.

6. Steam Facials

Steam facials are very easy to give yourself at home. Boil water and let it sit for a bit before steeping herbs in the water. Good herbs for a steam facial include peppermint, green tea, and lavender. You need the water to be hot enough to provide five minutes of steam. Once the herbs have steeped for a few minutes, put your face and the water underneath a towel. This keeps the steam in, opening your pores up for deep cleaning. Always wash your face and remove all makeup before giving yourself any kind of facial treatment.

7. Natural Facial Masks

After you’ve spent five minutes in your steam tent, you can apply a natural facial mask you make at home. Mix some milk and honey together in a bowl. The resulting mixture should be both creamy and sticky. Make sure to keep your hair back away from the face, then apply the mixture. Lay down on your bed, throw some cucumber slices over your eyes, and relax for 15 minutes. When you’re done, rinse first with warm water, then with cold. Dab your face dry (don’t wipe!) and apply your favorite moisturizer.

8. Exfoliating

You can make your own exfoliating scrubs at home that work for the whole body. Put table salt into a container, then fill the container with olive oil just past the line formed by the salt. Mix it up and apply it to every part of your body you want to exfoliate. Rub it in good, then rinse to remove.

9. Dying Your Hair

Whether you’re looking to cover up grey or just give yourself a bold new look, dying your hair at home is simple and easy. You can get quality hair dyes from any drug store for a reasonable price. Cover your hair with a shower cap after you have saturated it with the dye. Also, be very careful — hair dye stains easily, so don’t wear anything that’s too important to you while you’re coloring your hair.

10. Pedicures

The steps to a home pedicure are much the same as a manicure. Soak your feet before shaping your nails. Throw some exfoliant on your feet to remove layers of dead skin. Now you’re ready to apply your favorite color to your toes.

This article is from Nicholas Pell of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. And aside from saving money, there are many reasons to make your own, including taking better care of your skin and hair. I have picked out five easy recipes for homemade hair conditioners that treat dry or damaged hair, along with some excellent general advice from Nunziata's natural hair care workshops. (See also: 10 Budget Beauty Products You Can Make at Home)

While these are simple recipes, Nunziata does say it takes practice to get it right and that there are some important things to remember about using conditioners:

Conditioning lubricates the hair shaft, causing softness and preventing breakage and tangles. Most are applied after shampooing, but some are used prior and left on for 20 minutes or even overnight.

From "Herbal Hair Care" by Cristi Nunziata

Avocado Deep Conditioner

1/2 mashed ripe avocado

1/2 tsp olive oil

3 drops lavender or rosemary essential oil

Combine ingredients and apply to hair, focusing on the ends. Leave on for at least 10 minutes, then rinse.

From Beauty By Nature by Brigette Mars

Cost: Around $10 for two to three treatments. The essential oil will be the most expensive item here (around $8.50). You can always buy a small amount of olive oil in bulk if you don't already have it on hand. Unless you plan to eat the other half of the avocado, keep the pit inside the flesh of the avocado and store it in a container in the refrigerator; this will keep it from turning completely brown when you are ready to use it again. Use the other half within 24 hours.

Oil Hair-Conditioning Treatment

Small amount of jojoba, olive, or coconut oil

Herb mixture of choice (optional)

Essential oils of choice (optional)

Warm the oil to 100-105 degrees in a double boiler. If using, add herbs and essential oils.

Dampen hair. For long or thick hair, use 1-2 teaspoons of the oil mixture, and for fine or short hair, use 1/4 teaspoon of the mixture. Massage oil into the scalp and work through the strands, covering all hair completely. Cover hair with a shower cap or plastic bag and if possible sit in the sun or by the woodstove. Heat facilitates the process. Leave the oil in for an hour or two, and then, shampoo and rinse.

From Rosemary Gladstar’s Family Herbal

Cost: Less than $15 if you don't use jojoba or essential oils. This cost should include at least 20 treatments, since a jar of coconut oil lasts a long time if you use a moderate amount for each treatment. Same with the essential oils if you decide to use them, which will increase the cost to between $20 to $25, depending on which essential oils you choose (some are more expensive than others).

Vinegar Rinses

Vinegar rinses relieve itchy scalp, dandruff, and dull hair and restore the scalp’s natural acid mantle. They are best for normal and oily hair, rather than dry. Use white vinegar for blondes, apple cider vinegar for brunettes, and red wine vinegar for red-heads. Leave the rinse on for at least five minutes if you are going to rinse it out. You can, however, leave it on and any smell will disappear once the hair is dry.

From "Herbal Hair Care," by Cristi Nunziata

Herb blend: For blondes, calendula and chamomile; For dark hair, nettle and marshmallow; or make up your own

Apple cider vinegar

A few drops of essential oil

Distilled water

1. Fill a quart jar half way with herbs. Cover with vinegar and cap tightly. Place the jar in a warm spot for 2-3 weeks, shaking daily.

2. Strain the vinegar and add essential oils. Store in a plastic bottle.

3. Dilute the rinse with distilled water. For oily hair, dilute one part rinse with four parts water. For dry hair, dilute one part rinse with six parts water. After shampooing and rinsing, pour vinegar rinse slowly over hair, massaging it into the scalp. Rinse with water.

From Rosemary Gladstar’s Family Herbal

Cost: Less than $15 to make the initial quart, which should provide 20 or more treatments. You can find many herbs in bulk at your local co-op or health food store, and possibly even vinegar. Even if you can't find vinegar in bulk, it is usually around $10 for a 32 oz. bottle, and it's a useful health-food staple to keep on hand. You can find really good prices online, such as this gallon of Bragg's at Amazon.

Anti-Dandruff Herbal Hair Rinse

1 quart water

Large handful of rosemary, nettle, thyme, and lavender

2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice. Use vinegar if your hair is dry or lemon juice if it is oily.

Bring water to a boil and add the herb mixture. Stir, cover, and steep for 30 minutes. Strain and add either vinegar or lemon juice. After shampooing and conditioning, squeeze out excess water, then pour the liquid over your hair and don’t rinse it out.

From Beauty By Nature by Brigette Mars

Cost: Less than $10 per treatment, if you can find the herbs in bulk or grow your own herbs.

Disappear Dandruff Treatment

1/4 cup coconut oil

1/4 tsp tea tree oil

Combine ingredients, massage into scalp before bed and cover head with a breathable shower cap.

From Beauty By Nature by Brigette Mars

Cost: Between $10 and $15 for 20 or more treatments (see note about coconut oil in second recipe from above).

For more information on general hair care, here are some additional tips from Herbal Ed Coordinator Cristi Nunziata:

Hair is made up of protein (95-97% protein and 3% water), so be sure you are getting enough of it. Other hair essentials include: biotin (eggs, organ meats, dried fruit, molasses), iron, iodine, B12, and Omega 3s.

Teas for hair health include: alfalfa, burdock root, ho shou wu, horsetail, nettle, and oat straw.

Seaweeds are said to keep hair healthy and dark.

Rinsing hair with cold water will flatten hair and make it better able to reflect light.

Scalp massage can prevent hair loss, stimulate sebaceous glands, and increase circulation. Add a few drops of rosemary essential oil to fingertips.

Brushing hair distributes hair oils. Natural bristles are best because they absorb and distribute the oils and trap dirt and dust.

Minimize blow dryers, hot rollers, curling irons, and chlorinated swimming pools. If you use a blow dryer hold it at least 6 inches away from the hair and use a low setting.

Ditch stress, which can cause hair loss and lackluster hair. Try yoga, meditation, massage, or a cup of calming tea.

Get your hair trimmed every eight weeks to remove frizzy, split, or frayed ends.

Wear a hat to protect your hair from sunlight, which can be drying or color-altering especially for color treated hair).

This article is from Ashley Watson of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. I'd always known that her hair looked better than mine, but I couldn't believe that it was simply a matter of money. I didn't want it to be, either. Even in high school, I had other financial priorities than my do. There are frugal options for taking care of your locks, though. It's taken me a while to find them, but I use these tricks regularly.

Skip the repeat: 'Lather. Rinse. Repeat.' is one of the greatest marketing phrases of the 20th century. But it's misleading. To get your hair clean, one lather-and-rinse cycle is plenty.

Eat a healthy diet: You can eat your way to better hair. If you eat a balanced diet — plenty of fruits and vegetables, as well as protein — your body will have the nutrients necessary to grow healthy hair. A balanced diet won't solve every hair problem, but it can head quite a few off at the pass. For instance, if you have an iron deficiency, your hair can thin out.

Go natural: Hair dye is expensive, and it can make keeping your hair healthy much harder. Consider going back to your natural hair color for a while and save some serious dough. The same goes for perms. I've also been known to dye my hair myself. It isn't hard, but I recommend having a second pair of hands around.

Shop around for products: The same tips for shopping frugally for groceries work on hair care products. I buy on sale, clip coupons and pick up bulk bottles. I do have a preferred brand that I tend to stock up on, but it's not the most expensive brand on the shelf. According to a few hair styling friends, the expensive hair products aren't really any better than cheaper options. Wholesale distributors will also often provide great deals, as do online vendors.

Barter: If you really do prefer the job a professional will do on your hair, you don't have to give up those regular visits. But it's worth finding a stylist willing to accept a payment other than cash. During high school, I traded babysitting for haircuts on a regular basis. I didn't have to pay for a haircut and I could generally do my homework at the same time. Barbers and stylists need services as well as cash; you can see what you can trade.

Go organic: Sure, organic brands can be more expensive than their chemically-enhanced counterparts. But many organic shampoos and conditioners do not contain sulfates. While sulfates do remove oil and other junk from your hair, they also strip it and create frizz and other problems. If you can switch to sulfate-free products, you can stop using other products — like anti-frizz mouse. There's a period of adjustment and your hair might be slightly oily in comparison, but after a few weeks, your hair should be healthier.

This article is from Thursday Bram of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
