It's with this frame of mind that I wanted to talk about some of the lesser known Prime perks. After all, Amazon Prime these days is much more than just free two-day shipping, and some of these perks can actually replace monthly premium pay services and help reduce your overall entertainment costs.

1. Unlimited Photo Storage

One of the least used Prime perks is the free unlimited photo storage service. Their cloud drive is secure and allows you to upload and access photos from your PC, mobile device, or via any web connection. So the next time your smartphone or SD card on your digital camera is reaching capacity, you can easily upload your photos to the Amazon cloud. The only limit that Amazon places on your cloud storage is with 1080p video — you're only allowed 5GB of storage, where the Google free storage option allows unlimited storage.

2. Prime Music

The Amazon Prime Music Streaming Service has gotten much better in recent months and is worth revisiting. Its improvements make it a fantastic alternative to premium pay music services like Spotify Premium and Pandora One. For example, all Prime Music Stations and custom created playlists now offer ad-free listening with unlimited skips, making it very comparable to premium services. You can now also download songs directly to your listening device, allowing for offline playback when an Internet connection is not available.

3. Prime "Early Access" Deals

As a Prime member, have you ever heard of a site called MyHabit? If you're like most members, probably not, but it's definitely worth a look as it's owned by Amazon and specializes in highly discounted clothing, shoes, handbags, jewelry, and home items. The deals, often in the 70% off range, are only available to registered Amazon members, and 30-minute early access to these deals is granted only to Prime members. Once on the MyHabit website, simply look for the Early Access logo and start your bargain shopping before popular items get snatched up by non-Prime members. It's also worth mentioning that, unfortunately, free two-day Prime shipping is not available on your orders from MyHabit. Their standard shipping rate is a flat $5.95.

4. Amazon Prime Pantry

Another perk that many busy families are not taking advantage of is Prime Pantry, which offers "low-priced everyday essentials in everyday sizes, delivered to your home." The key takeaway to their tagline is "everyday sizes," as you no longer have to order in bulk and hope you use it all. You can now order the amount that you'll actually use. As long as it fits in your "virtual box," you'll get it delivered to your doorstep for a flat $5.99. It becomes kind of a fun game to follow your box "fill-percentage" while building your online order. Popular Amazon Pantry product categories include groceries, snacks, household, pet supplies, and baby care. If you've never explored this Prime service, and you could use some help keeping your kitchen pantry full, it's definitely worth a look.

5. Free Video Streaming

Are you a Prime member and currently paying for an online streaming service like Netflix or Hulu Plus? If so, you probably haven't explored Prime Video recently. For many users, it has become an excellent replacement for the above mentioned pay services. Improvements in recent months include several highly rated Amazon original series, more monthly-added Prime movies and TV shows, and an easier to navigate interface.

6. Amazon Family

My wife and I had our Prime membership for two years before we took the time to see if the Amazon Family program (formerly Amazon Mom) could benefit us. Come to find out, I wish we had used it much earlier as it saves us a lot of time and money every month. Straight from their site, "Amazon Family provides Prime members exclusive family-oriented offers, coupons, age-based recommendations, 20% off diaper subscriptions, and a 15% Baby Registry completion discount." The 20% diaper savings alone would have been of a great benefit. Also, if you have young children, the coupon offers will often save you 15%–20% on baby health items, baby food, as well as kitchen and beauty items.

7. Free Trial for Students

I was just recently chatting with a college freshman, and he was telling me about all the things he needed to buy for his dorm room. I asked if he had taken advantage of the free six-month Amazon Prime trial that they offer. Surprisingly, he had never heard of it and was excited to get the free two-day shipping on all products sold directly by Amazon. It's worth noting that other perks like Prime Video, Prime Music, and the Kindle Lending Library are not available during the trial period. But after your six-month trial ends, you'll have the option to purchase Amazon Prime for 50% off the $99 price tag at which point you'll gain access to all the Prime perks.

How do you use Amazon Prime to its fullest potential? Or if not a member, do any of these perks sway your decision to join?

This article is from Kyle James of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Many of these tactics, at first glance, seem completely harmless. After all, who doesn't like free shipping, or an awesome return policy? But it's not until we dig a little deeper into the motivation as to why these "perks" are offered, that we see the real reasoning. Here are a few of these so-called "perks" and how we can avoid the retail traps.

Liberal Return Policies

Have you ever been in a store, trying to decide on a purchase, and told yourself you'll go ahead and buy it and just return it later if you don't use it? If you have, you're in the same boat as 91% of Americans who factor in the store's return policy when making a purchase. But what you probably don't know is that the store is banking on you making this decision and often has a liberal return policy in place to help sway your buying decision.

The fact of the matter is stores use their return policies as a way to pad their bottom-line because they know a percentage of shoppers won't ever bother to return the item. Instead, they'll keep it lying around, with a bunch of other stuff they don't need. The evidence even shows that the longer return window a store gives, the less likely we are to return the item. We tend to get attached to it, forget we even have it, or use good ol' procrastination to tell ourselves we have plenty of time to return it.

So the next time you're standing in the aisle ciphering over a significant purchase, don't let the store's return policy trick you into making the purchase. Instead, make the decision based solely on need and a competitive price. If you use a liberal return policy as the deciding factor, be aware that you're playing right into the retailer's hand.

The Psychology of Free Shipping

Online retailers know that free shipping is a big deal for shoppers. As a matter of fact, 96% of online shoppers are more likely to shop on a website that offers free delivery. But don't let free shipping blind you to other important factors you should consider. Namely the price of the item, how costly it might be to return the item, and the reputation of the website. In other words, don't let the attractiveness of free shipping keep you from doing a quick price comparison with an app like ShopSavvy. After all, free shipping isn't that big of a deal if a competing retailer has a better price, even when factoring in shipping costs.

Attractive Rebate Offers

When I worked in the paint department at The Home Depot, we periodically had a "rebate weekend" where you got $5 back on a gallon of paint and $20 back on five gallons. But the rebate wasn't instant — it required you to mail in your receipt and wait for the rebate check to show up in the mail a few weeks later. You wouldn't believe the number of repeat customers I'd talk to that would buy paint with every intention of mailing-in the rebate, but would fail to do so.

The fact of the matter is that rebates are still in the "snail mail" stone age. This is for a reason — retailers want to make them as hard as possible to redeem so shoppers will put them in the desk drawer and forget about them. And guess what? It works. Redemption rates hover in the 40%–50% range depending on the size of the rebate.

The takeaway here is to always mail in the rebate as quickly as possible. The longer you wait, the more likely you are to not take the time to get your money. I strongly recommend keeping the rebate in your bill pile and fill it out the next time you sit down to pay your monthly bills.

"Cheap" Add-On Items

Just the other day, I was purchasing a workout program online and was happy to see it would only cost me $39.99 for several DVDs and a meal planning guide. Then when I was checking out, the site kept promoting these add-on products before they would let me get to the actual checkout page. Having only paid $40 for the program, I found myself intrigued and ended up spending another $30 for a bonus DVD, water bottle, and a couple cool trinkets.

After I finished my purchase and was reviewing my order, I realized that I had played right into their hands. They offered a product for less than what I expected to pay, then persuaded me into buying some relatively expensive add-on items that do nothing but pad the store's bottom-line. You see this technique done all the time with infomercials and most recently with Amazon, which forces Prime customers to bundle purchases that include add-on items. However, it may surprise you that 32 million Americans started their Christmas shopping during the summer, according to a survey by creditcards.com.

Even more shocking, 4.6 million ultra early-bird shoppers are already done!

If you're wondering why people aren't starting their holiday shopping on Black Friday, the reason is that there are plenty of other major days for deals. Here is your ultimate calendar of shopping days that provide major savings.

1. Amazon Prime Day (Sometime in July)

While some people posted several funny responses to Amazon's well-publicized Prime Day earlier this year, many Americans surely took advantage of it, rocketing sales by 93%.

Here is a sample of the savings last July 15, 2015:

28% off GoPro HERO4 bundle (sale price: $499.99)

47% off Bose SoundTrue On-Ear Headphones (sale price: $80)

34% off iRobot Robot Roomba (sale price: $250)

38% off Amazon Fire TV Stick (sale price: $24.00)

While Amazon hasn't announced if it would reprise its Prime Day in 2016, it's a good idea to save your chance for a free trial of Amazon Prime until July 2016 to potentially take advantage of this major shopping day. If you already have a Prime membership, make sure you use it then. Singles Day (November 11th)

Forget Black Friday, Singles Day (created by Chinese company Alibaba) is the largest shopping day in the world! In 2014, Singles Day hit a new record of $9.3 billion (RMB 57.1 billion) in gross merchandise sales, a 60% increase from last year's $5.8 billion. (See also: 4 Big Tech Stocks Offering Big Returns)

Only 27 merchants took part in Singles Day back when it first started in 2009. In just five years, that number grew to an estimated 27,000. Non-Chinese companies are also eager to jump in the game and more than 200 merchants from over 20 countries participated last year.

For 2015, the total value of discounted coupons is estimated to be $0.7 billion (RMB 4.8 billion).

3. Small Business Saturday (Saturday After Thanksgiving)

In 2014, 88 million Americans "shopped small" on Small Business Saturday, up 14.9% from the previous year, spending about $14.3 billion at independent retailers and restaurants.

To help its cardmembers in supporting their favorite local shops and small businesses, in previous years American Express has offered up to three $10 statement credits per eligible American Express Card for shopping at participating stores. In 2014, registration for this perk took place between November 1st and November 29th, so keep an eye on your American Express card portal and sign up for it under the "Amex Offers & Benefits" tab.

4. Cyber Monday (Monday After Thanksgiving)

This major shopping day has proven so successful for U.S. retailers that some of them, such as Target, Walmart, and Best Buy, already have landing pages for Cyber Monday (November 30, 2015) and extend some of the savings throughout "Cyber Week."

Here are some examples of past savings during Cyber Monday:

In 2014, Amazon cut down the price of its Fire TV by $30 to $69.

In 2014, Best Buy reduced the price of Sharp Aquos Q+ Series 70" Class LED 1080p 240Hz Smart HDTV by $1,100 to $1,799.99.

In 2013, Newegg shaved off $100 of the LG G Pad 8.3 and offered it at $249.

5. Green Monday (Early December)

Created by eBay in 2007, Green Monday is held the second Monday of every December. Sorry environmentalists, this day has nothing to do with hugging trees — it's all about saving some greenbacks!

Since 2010, Green Monday has consistently ranked as the third heaviest online sales day of the year. And for good reason: Many retailers, including Walmart, Sears, Macy's, J.C. Penney, and Amazon take part of this shopping day. According to deals site FatWallet, about 70% of retailers take part of this day, offering 20% to 50% in discounts for toys and electronics.

6. Free Shipping Day (Middle December)

Taking place on December 18th this year, Free Shipping Day capitalizes on two big trends. First, more and more late Christmas shoppers are looking for free shipping with guaranteed arrival by Christmas Eve. Second, 90% of consumers spend more when offered free delivery, and nearly 50% of them will abandon an online shopping cart if met with high shipping fees.

The full list of participating merchants will be revealed at the same site at 12:01am EST on Friday, December 18, 2015. On top of guaranteed free shipping by Christmas Eve, most companies offer discount codes and coupons.

7. Super Saturday (Saturday Before Christmas)

Many shoppers won't be done until Christmas Eve. Retailers know this and are willing to provide some last minute savings on Super Saturday. While sale offers may differ among retailers, deals site DealNews found that last year Super Saturday offered good savings in TVs, appliances, and clothes (except shoes).

Some sample savings from 2014's Super Saturday were:

Kmart: Westinghouse 39" TV ($239.99 with free shipping)

Sears: Kenmore 1.6-Cubic-Foot Over-the-Range Microwave ($189.99)

Sears: Kenmore 25-Cubic-Foot Side-by-Side Refrigerator ($985.28)

Target: Samsung 32" HDTV ($199.99)

Target: Nintendo 3DS XL Handheld Gaming System ($149.99)

Walmart: 55" LED HDTV ($678)

Walmart: GoPro HERO3: White Edition Action Camcorder ($199)

What are other major shopping days besides Black Friday?

This article is from Damian Davila of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Retailers are keenly aware of this phenomenon and have become very good at tricking your brain into thinking you're getting a deal, even when you may be spending more than you should. Here are some clever ways retailers use coupons to get you to open your wallet wide, along with some timely tips to fight back.

1. Online Coupons Aren't Always a Deal

Online shoppers love a good coupon code. But did you know that many online retailers are notorious for releasing a coupon only after jacking all of their prices up to full-retail? Suddenly your 25% off coupon code doesn't look so good, especially when you consider the fact that you could have actually saved more money the week prior, for example, when the website had everything in their new fall collection for 30% off, no coupon needed.

A few of the online retailers notorious for releasing a coupon when prices are high include Ann Taylor, American Eagle, Old Navy, and Macy's to name a few. It's always in your best interest to keep track of the pricing schemes of the online retailers you frequent on a regular basis. Pay attention to when they release coupons and when they offer sitewide sales and only make your purchases when the price is actually the lowest. Also, if you can time your purchase when you have a coupon code in hand and the retailer is having a sitewide sale, you'll definitely maximize your savings.

2. The BOGO Dilemma

Another commonly used trick retailers use to get you to open your wallets wide is "Buy one, get one for 50% off," also known as BOGO. Be aware that unless it is "Buy one, get one free," you're rarely getting a good deal. Buy one, get one for 50% off is the equivalent of a 25% off coupon — which is an okay deal, but only if you actually need two of the particular item. Keep in mind that many retailers, especially clothing and shoe stores, often have coupons that exceed 25% off, making the BOGO offer nothing more than a spending trap. Kohl's, Lands' End, JCPenney, and Gap are a few retailers that fit this bill and immediately jump to mind.

3. Free Shipping… With a Catch

When it comes to shopping online, there is nothing worse than finishing your shopping at a website only to discover you're $10 short of qualifying for free shipping. Many online retailers will set a minimum threshold requirement for free delivery at $25, $50, $75, or even $100 to encourage shoppers to add items to their purchase and thus pad their profits.

The next time this happens to you, hit up Google and do a search for "[store name] free shipping coupon" and see if you can dig up a coupon code for free delivery. If that doesn't work, many websites employ live chat operators who have a select number of coupons to hand out if you politely ask. Just start a chat session, explain your situation, and tell the operator how you'd like to complete your purchase but can't justify the shipping charge since you're so close to the minimum order threshold. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with your result and stand a great chance of scoring a free shipping coupon without adding something to your cart that you don't need.

4. Percent Off Coupon With Minimum Order Size

Another retail trick is to release "percent off" or "dollar off" coupons with a minimum dollar amount required to score the discount. Whether you need to spend $49, $75, or $99 to get the discount, it's important to realize that retailers are attempting to get you to spend more in order to "save" some money. This is often a bad proposition for consumers and can easily lead to overspending. A smart workaround is to never walk into a store with one of these coupons unless you're sure you'll meet the minimum. If you do walk in and are determined to redeem the coupon, make sure you're buying items that you actually need or can use as a gift down the road.

5. Coupons You Buy Can Expire

Popular websites like Groupon and LivingSocial allow you to buy deals and coupons for experiences like golfing, sky diving, cooking classes, yoga classes, and the like. But what many consumers don't know is that many of these deals have expiration dates. They're banking on you buying the offer and forgetting to use it, or deciding later that it's not your cup of tea.

Avoid this expiration trick by instituting a "30-day" policy. If you know you'll use the coupon within 30 days, then go ahead and purchase it. If you're on the fence in the slightest, pass on the offer as it'll probably go unused. Once you buy the experience or class, book it right away and get it on your calendar to make sure it gets used and doesn't end up in your desk drawer for all eternity.

By being aware of why retailers release certain coupons and deals, and how they can make you overspend, you stand a great chance of actually saving money on the things you need.

What other ways have retailers used coupons and "deals" to get you to spend more?

This article is from Kyle James of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. To be fair, this is the first rate hike since it launched nine years ago. Still, customers and fans are letting their feelings about this be heard loud and clear on Amazon Prime forums and the feedback isn't pretty. Rather than grumbling about this change, let's examine the benefits that come with Amazon Prime and the discounts available. (See also: Amazon Deal Hacks You Don't Know About)

Benefits of Amazon Prime

There are quite a few benefits included in Prime Membership — not just the 2-day shipping which is its most popular perk.

1. Two-Day Shipping

This is the central benefit of Amazon Prime that is well-known by everyone who uses it. For the entire year, members receive free and unlimited two-day shipping on almost everything sold by Amazon with no minimum purchase required. (There are exclusions to this.) Given the ugly prices of shipping on many sites, this is a significant savings for frequent shoppers, even with the annual fee hike. If Amazon delivers after the two day mark, Amazon Prime Members may be eligible for a free one month extension.

2. Streaming Television and Movies

Amazon Prime members have free access to unlimited streaming of over 40,000 movies and television episodes through Amazon Instant Video. Granted, the selection doesn't include the newest properties, but it provides plenty of options.

3. Kindle Owners' Lending Library and Kindle First

The Kindle Store boasts 500,000 Kindle titles. Amazon Prime members can borrow one book a month for free to read on a Kindle or Kindle mobile app. Think of it as a personal mini-library with all of the latest and greatest titles at your fingertips. Additionally, Amazon Prime members receive a free Kindle First book every month. Each month, Amazon Publishing editors select four new books each month that will be released the following month. Kindle First subscribers can choose one of these four titles for $1.99 to read a month before it's released to the general public. Amazon Prime members get their Kindle First choice book for free.

4. Share the Shipping

Amazon Prime Members can share their shipping benefits with up to four additional household members. Small business owners who subscribe to Amazon Prime can invite up to four co-workers to shop with the corporate account. (See also: Best Credit Cards for Small Businesses)

5. Amazon Prime Music Streaming

Amazon is considering the possibility of getting in on the streaming music act. The company is rumored to be in negotiations with a number of record labels though the details are fuzzy at best, and the agreement, if there is one, may take quite a while to unfold. (See also: Student Discounts)

2. Amazon Mom

Moms, Amazon Prime has you covered with Amazon Mom. After the trial, Amazon Mom costs $99 and includes the discounts listed above, all Amazon Prime benefits, and a 15% baby registry completion discount.

3. Try It for Free

Everyone loves a free sample. Amazon Prime provides a free 30-day trial. Amazon automatically registers people who take advantage of a free trial after the 30-day mark. To cancel, you must take action and contact Amazon prior to the trial's end.

Other Ways to Save on Amazon Shipping

Amazon Prime isn't the only way to save on Amazon shipping costs. Shipping is free for all orders that total $35 or more. (Some restrictions apply.) Amazon also has a Subscribe & Save Program: pick eligible items that are subscription eligible and then choose the quantity and delivery frequency of each item. The Subscribe & Save Program doesn't require any upfront fee and can be cancelled at any time without penalty. If you choose to have 5 or more Subscribe & Ship items delivered on the same day, there is a 15% discount on the entire order.

All these benefits and discounts make Amazon Prime a great value for those who are frequent shoppers. Also remember that many items on Amazon cost less than those found in brick-and-mortar stores and they're delivered right to the door, no lugging required. If Amazon Prime still feels like less than a bargain, some viable competitors such as ShopRunner are on the rise and eager for disgruntled Amazon Prime members. (And if you're a current Prime member who hasn't renewed at the higher rate yet, get one year FREE membership!) After all, where there's a will to save, there's always a way!

Are you an Amazon Prime subscriber? Will you maintain your subscription even after the price hike? Even tumultuous economic conditions don't mean so-called ecommerce is going away; rather, it stresses being a savvy, frugal shopper, and opens up opportunities for businesses to attract your attention.

Whether it's buying or building, being resourceful helps you score the same great stuff at lower prices, and possibly faster delivery. (Think MacGyver marrying the A-Team.) The following isn't an exhaustive guide to each and every to-do under the sun, but it is experience-worn advice which I'll gladly impart for your benefit. It mainly concentrates on buying in the US of A, but the principles are mostly true worldwide. I'll also specify for the scope of this article, by "Stuff", I mean possessions you can carry (like a microwave) or at the most, can transport around (like a car) — so, not a new house.

Let's dive in with the spirit of Scrooge McDuck, then!

Know where you're looking

Some questions have very easy answers. If you're looking for books and other sundry merchandise, you'll almost always go right with Amazon.com. Yes, I know it has competitors — as well as other sellers which've partnered with it — but 2 special things call it out:

Amazon Prime - If you're a shopaholic, even a thrifty one, it's currently US$80/year for free 2-day shipping. Other details apply, but if you buy frequently enough — say, at least a dozen times a year — this will have you covered both cost- and convenience-wise. Of course, they do this to make you buy more! So don't spend just because you want to, but consider how it fits your lifestyle, and try their free 1-month trial.

Amazon's service - It's not just about the raw dollar, it's about the smile on your face. I've had questions about my orders and confusion about pricing, and I've consistently received timely, pleasant replies. That peace of mind pays for itself, and serves as a model of what you should expect elsewhere.

I give the obligatory disclaimer that I'm not professionally affiliated with Amazon — just a happy customer many times over that cites them as an "example megahub" for many goods.

Let's open it up…

You'll want to be familiar with the major deals sites. There are many out there which duplicate the same style and deals, so here are a few I check daily — they're all stored as bookmarks in my Firefox toolbar, highly recommended for saving time via "Open All in Tabs":

Woot - I was drawn to their flavorful copywriting. Aside from their famed "Woot-Offs" and "Bags of crap", they sell ONE thing a day. Sometimes it's what you're looking for. Often it's not. But they're full of whimsy and fun, and fill a great niche.

DealsPlus - Some deals site make the horrendous mistake of piling on more text than you'll care to parse. DealsPlus is very visual, providing thumbnails and a quick-browse summary of each deal.

Dealhack - In the "More text but not so much that it makes your eyes fall out" dept., they also provide a very thumbnail-ish view, with a vertically-designed navigation. So get your scroll wheel ready and skim down.

dealnews.com - Again, good use of thumbnails (I find they make browsing a lot easier). Wider layout than Dealhack, and as you gain experience, you'll notice when the same popular deals appear on different sites. But what I like here is the quick summary of the hottest stuff at the very top.

SlickDeals.net Forums - Disparate deals sites have forums. Among the best is SlickDeals. They also have their own front page, but I heart their forums because of the unadulterated spontaneity of excitement that punches through the hype. You can smell it in the air — like the inevitable scramble for cheap hard drives before they're OoS (Out of Stock)! And to make this sound more like a restaurant guide, be sure to check out the offerings of the legendary Selma, a gothy deal-sharer who's posted 50,000+ times. If you feel lost, look for the thumbs-up ratings and # of thread views you can sort.

FatWallet - Finally, a site without "deals" in the name. They tend to broadcast deals which are broadly advertised by stores themselves (as opposed to "secret coupons"). Part of the reason behind this is that they offer cashback & coupons. I haven't really used their cashback, but I think FatWallet's a fine overview of the more commercial (for lack of a better term) bargains.

Be brave to explore beyond these, and let me know what gems you uncover and have missed! For example, RedFlagDeals.com reigns surpreme in Canada. The jungle o' deals is thick, indeed.

By immersing yourself in deals sites, you'll become familiar with which stores are favored by veteran dealhunters. E.g., you'll often see buy.com and NewEgg mentioned for computer gear. And a sensible way to get a grasp on various stores is to see their customer feedback on eBay (if they have a presence there), or search ResellerRatings. Don't zoom in on outliers (the occasional bad review), look for consistency.

Beyond mere observation, do chat up with your fellow dealhunters — especially those who know a lot more. They'll save you dollars and hardship.

Know what you're looking for

Were you expecting something less obvious? That's coming up soon! But for now, I'll say…

It's fun to browse bargain sites. It's also time-consuming if you do it too much, and while it may inform you of what fair prices are for various items, it also tends to be unfocused.

Give yourself a direction, and at the very least, take advantage of the "deal alerts" most bargain sites make available. These come in varying forms, but tend to work like this: you enter keyword(s) and frequency of when you want to be notified. They'll ping (via onsite notice, email, and in some cases SMS) you when new deals are available.

This is useful, by the way, if you just missed a substantial rebate on an item and are waiting for it to come around again. Chances are high it will (unless an item's being discontinued). If you don't really want a gadget, don't fall for ad pressure to "ACT NOW BECAUSE SUPPLIES ARE LIMITED!" because if something's really in demand, they'll want to sell more of it. I rebate-waited and got my Logitech diNovo Edge keyboard for US$50 cheaper — a price that'd command a fair meal!

Emphasis on rebate-waited, because…

Mail-in rebates will make you wait

a LONG time. Not always, but often enough for it to be a point of consideration, especially if finances are tight. You may see estimated expectations of "6-8 weeks", and these tend to be pretty common. Thankfully, some companies like Logitech do email you to check your rebate status online, along with an estimated mail date for your cheque.

That's why if you can't wait, don't depend on mail-in rebates. And be wary of companies that've been called out by expert dealhunters as scams, because while the majority aren't, lack of communication does create that perception. Thus, my fave kind of rebate is the instant rebate.

You may be wondering then, besides the understandable processing time, why so long a wait for MIRs? Wikipedia has the backstory.

Be smart about coupons & price comparison

RetailMeNot.com isn't just a beautiful site, it makes it very easy to look for discount coupons. I've regretted not checking here in the past because I discovered a substantial savings after I bought something — talk about buyer's remorse! So whenever I have a significant (obviously relative, but a good rule of thumb is above US$200) purchase, I fire up RetailMeNot and do the groundwork.

For price comparison, Shopzilla and PriceGrabber.com are your friends. Use them and if they're really useful, you'll keep using them.

Major search engines, like Google, also have their own price comparisons, and links to many others. Through experience, naturally find what works for you.

After practicing coupons & price comparison for a few weeks, odds are high you'll spot diminishing returns. For instance, it's not healthy to spend half an hour trying to save US$2. Aim for the big savings, stack coupons whenever possible (mmmm, compound discounts), and be quick.

Be quick (Part II)

Hot deals often sell out very quickly. (Not to be confused by artificial pressure like "ACT NOW!" mentioned above.) That's why it's important for you to have a solid understanding of the context you're involved in: for example, on deals forums, you'll notice a few of the same posters grab deal after deal and boast about it. (There's a certain social bonding that comes when you become an involved member of deal-communities.) This, like any other acquired skill, comes with extended practice. Have your alerts set up so you can pounce on deals that matter. The most advanced dealhunters use automation, like macros, to cut down on tedious steps and jump to the front of the virtual checkout line.

What also counts for a lot: have accounts pre-setup with payment info at the sites you want to shop from. You want to be selective with who you give your personal info to, but if it's a reputable store, your data should be safe, in all practical likelihood. This saves you the trouble of having to fumble with a credit card # when it comes down to crunch time. I once missed out on a hot MP3 player sale at Woot because I hadn't signed up for an account yet — I learned my lesson!

Don't be fooled by fake free shipping

If an item is a fine price and has free shipping, then praise be! But, sometimes "free shipping" is deceptive, because the shipping cost is absorbed in a jacked-up item cost. For example, I saw a pair of headphones on eBay for US$20 that claimed "free shipping". The same pair could be found elsewhere for US$15 with approx. US$5 shipping clearly stated, so it's really not a better deal.

The inverse is also true: beware of inordinate shipping costs. And taxes. A number of stores charge sales tax if you buy in-state/province/region — see Amazon's policy — and while sometimes this is unavoidable due to a lack of alternatives, it's worth keeping in mind. While tax laws are out-of-scope of this article, you won't ever regret being prepared and being aware.

Do your best to find out a store's shipping costs beforehand so you can factor that in ASAP.

Look for gems with eBay's Buy It Now

eBay is synonymous with popularizing and dominating online auctions. While it's still famous for auctions, gems (not just in the mineral sense) can be found by way of many smaller stores which are trying to build their presence and business via eBay's big visibility.

Often, this is new or refurbished/B-stock material with warranty which is sent to you not from an individual, but a company. And it has a "Buy It Now" graphic to indicate such. (It may or may not have a corresponding auction if you want to try your hand at getting it for lower.)

Buy It Now can be good for rarer, but not highly obscure goods. There're sometimes package deals — like a digital camera that comes with a case + memory card + mini-tripod + extra battery at the same cost of the camera alone elsewhere.

In my web browser, I often have one tab opened on eBay and another opened on Amazon, and I do searches and compare. To supplement my info when it's tough to tell, I use the comparison shopping resources mentioned above.

While it's past, much of a dealhunter ballyhoo was made about Microsoft Live.com's 25% cashback through eBay (apparently, it was 35% last time it came 'round). Being on top of opportunities like these can sweeten already honey-soaked deals. Make sure you read the terms and conditions and revel in the savings.

Do your best to assure the clothing fits

Measure yourself accurately. My wife stresses how important this is, because we've been subject to inaccurate pictures and vague sense of scale when buying clothes online. I thought a pair of pants, despite the specs, would fit me snugly. Turns out they're baggy as heck! While I haven't opted for an accompanying pair of suspenders since they're surprisingly comfy, my position still stands.

A good "fit" is also transferably applicable to non-clothing goods which you may feel compelled to see in-person, like TVs and flat panel monitors: a JPG picture can't give you its actual display quality, but if your local store's stock costs much more than what's online, it's fair to compare. (A store's physical presence can add to the cost.)

Some stores offer 3D 360-degree views of their merchandise, but this is still a novelty, rather than a common staple. Still worth looking out for.

Keep customer service and return policy close

I'll often tell you: it's not just about the $$$. Saving a few bucks isn't worth it if you have a problem with your order and the merchants turn out to be jerks! You'd rather much have prompt, friendly "service with a smile" than being unheard or being treated rudely.

Consumer reviews often keep track of this, combining real stories with numerical ratings. And your own experiences will be the most visceral. If you're cautious, why not send an email or make a phone call before buying anything? Test the waters. See how they respond and if that makes you comfortable. Above any human-constructed currency, feeling good and expressing our identity through what we buy is an intriguing psychological phenomenon, and great customer service goes a long way towards reinforcing our beliefs.

If a store has a brick-and-mortar presence (like Old Navy), then you'll likely be able to return merchandise to a nearby store. If you live in the boonies, it may not as be as convenient, but good to know. If a store only allows you to mail a package back, verify who'd be responsible for postage costs beforehand, and be intimate with their RMA policy. A key keyphrase is: hassle-free.

Get ready to recycle

If you buy stuff online, it's going to come in a box. And if it arrives at your house, soon, you'll have a whole extended family of boxes, yes sirree, with itty-bitty baby boxes, and big grandparent boxes. So you'll either want to use those boxes to do something else, or have them recycled or otherwise disposed of.

It's an omnipresent, yet understated part of getting great deals.

Time-shift your holidays

Lastly, I'll suggest something unorthodox which you may not be able to do, especially if you're under social pressure from your family & friends. But consider liberating yourself because of this: when is Halloween and Easter candy cheapest? No, not in the stretch leading up to the holiday — look at the markdown prices after! This is easily observable in both offline and online stores, but it goes to show: when something's out of style/season and perceived value is less, prices plummet.

By being "out of sync" with society at large and other cultural waves, you can create your own opportunities to acquire the same stuff at much-reduced prices. Granted, I feel strongly about this because my family used to wait until after Christmas to grab boxes of bonbons and ornaments to prepare for the next year, but there's much truth… once you break free of generic trappings. (And I'm partially referring to Boxing Day sales, but saturated marketing of Dec. 26th has created its own traps.)

This is awesome news if you're flexible about traditional holidays. Clearly not for everyone — but if you can be an exception, consider yourself exceptional.

Happy buying!

While the above should never be considered an end-all or be-all since the Art of Getting Great Deals Online will continue to adapt and evolve, I hope my personal experiences and specific suggestions will enlighten you to discover the joy of consumerism in refreshing and eclectic ways.

Devoted dealhunters know that saving money goes beyond lopping off a fraction of the price — it's a way of life.

This article is from Torley Wong of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. There's a bit of a trick to getting a three-month trial instead of the more common one-month, but it's not hard. This should work for anyone who has never been a Prime paid or free member before:

1) Go to Amazon but DON'T sign up for the free 1-month trial.

2) Instead, put a $100 worth of textbooks in your cart. I used this one. Don't worry, you won't have to buy it.

3) Proceed with the check-out process. Before you get to the final purchase page, you will get an offer for a free THREE-MONTH trial.

(NOTE: Thanks to reader Brian for pointing out the exact location of the link, which you might not see right away: "the link is after you enter a credit card, and when you're finalizing your shipping options. It's kind of wedged in there among the existing shipping options, but it's definitely there.")

4) Accept it!

5) If you don't want the textbook, delete it from your cart.

And if going partway through the check-out process for a $100+ snoozefest biology book makes you nervous, remember that you can always just cancel Amazon orders before they ship at no charge, by logging into your account. It's easy.

Why you want Amazon Prime for the holidays:

I did a lot of my "Santa" shopping on Amazon last year, and enjoyed the fact that I could order the kids' gifts while they were tucked in bed, instead of trying to shop with them in tow ("Hey! Isn't that Rudolph out the window there? Clerk, could you wrap this, stat?) or wasting precious childcare hours at the mall. This year, local sales tax increases have given me even more incentive to shop online.

But I ended up paying a lot in shipping last year. I'd carefully choose several items together in order to hit the $25 minimum for free Super Saver Shipping, only to realize at the last minute that one or two of the purchases were from independent sellers and didn't qualify. Then I was faced with two choices: Stay up late searching for fillers to bring the qualifying portion of the order up to $25, or just pay shipping on the whole thing.

To be sure, the items that are ineligible for Super Saver are generally also ineligible for Amazon Prime -- stuff from indie merchants who don't use Amazon fulfillment, according to the Amazon Prime FAQ. However, I clicked around and found lots of potential gifts that do qualify. I think this will be a Godwend when I inevitably realize I need ONE MORE stocking stuffer or Secret Santa gift and the month of December is getting long in the tooth.

OK, of course you know how shipping gets during the holidays, so I'm not saying wait until the last, last minute. But still, if you do end up pushing it timewise, the promised 2-day shipping with Prime is a better bet than the regular Super Saver. Also, Prime members can upgrade to overnight shipping for $3.99 per order.

A lot of people love Amazon Prime, so maybe you'll even want to keep it after the trial, when it will cost the regular $79 a year. But if you think you WON'T want to keep it, you can also prevent that bill from hitting your credit card in three months: Log onto your Amazon account, where you will see the option of managing your Amazon Prime membership. From there, you'll be able to click a button that turns off the "auto upgrade" to the paid membership.

I signed right up for the three-month trial after reading about it on Wantnot.net. I'm excited to try it before the holidays, maybe by snapping up some grocery clearance items.

Oh, and if you don't like the idea of the textbook fake-out, you can always just sign up for a monthlong trial and do all your shopping early.

And then just hope that Christmas isn't cancelled this year due to financial apocolypse.

Disclosure: This post is riddled with affiliate links.

This article is from Carrie Kirby of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
