Q&A WIth T.J. Maxx

Sonya Cosentini, a spokesperson for TJ Maxx, was kind enough to answer my questions about back-to-school shopping and her company.

What do you say to a kid who thinks she's too cool to shop at T.J. Maxx?

Shopping at off-price retailers is a win-win for both mom and kid—they can find the trends and mall-store names they are looking for and you as a parent can stay within your budget.  The best way to explain to your kids is to show them.  Ask them to go through a magazine or online and point out the looks they want to create for their back to school wardrobe.

Have them make a list, and then take them to T.J. Maxx first. They’ll be surprised that they will find all of those trends right there!  T.J. Maxx even has those same mall-store brands that kids crave, and once they see those in the rack, and parents explain how much more they can get by purchasing them there instead of the mall, they will be on board!

How much money can a typical family save at T.J. Maxx for back to school shopping?

Families can save hundreds of dollars on a back to school wardrobe by shopping off-price.  For example, a hoodie you might find at a mall-store will be up to 60% less at T.J. Maxx.  With the purchase of that piece alone, now you have more room in your budget for the other things your child needs to go back to school in style—like a new backpack or pair of sneakers!

What are the hottest fashion trends for girls this year?

There are so many amazing looks out there this season for girls! For the little girl, try colored skinny leg jeans with sparkly belts paired with a buffalo plaid tunic or graphic printed t-shirts.  Little girls express themselves with t-shirts with peace signs, butterflies and hearts on sublimation and watercolor patterns.  Printed scarves that feature the same patterns or tie-dye will be the must-have accessory for back to school.

For teen girls, it’s all about recreating their favorite teen tv celebrity look! For that upper east side style try skinny jeans with a plaid ruffled blouse and cropped jacket. Detailed ballet flats and brooches complete any preppy look. For the rocker teen, you’ll see them rocking leggings with cuts, rips, tears or lace trim, heeled booties and a tunic under a leather motorcycle jacket.  With plaid all the rage this year, the ‘grunge’ look is easy to achieve: pair torn and worn jeans with a buffalo plaid tunic and chunky heels.

What are the hottest fashion trends for boys this year?

It’s really all about the basics and how to layer those basics to create must-have looks for both boys and girls this back to school season! For boys, you’ll see madras plaid in shorts, paired with collared shirts and striped sweaters. For a more casual, rocker look, boys will don printed t-shirts with skulls and vintage rock band logos with worn jeans and a funky hooded sweatshirt.

How is T.J. Maxx able to provide designer labels at such cheap prices?  Are these items damaged in some way?

There are many ways that we are able to offer amazing value on designer merchandise, a few:

  • Buying closer to need: Our buyers travel 40+ weeks per year to negotiate with more than 10,000 vendors in over 60 countries (vs. department stores who buy seasonally). This allows more opportunity to score great deals.
  • Flexible “no walls” concept: Because not all stores carry the same merchandise, the buyers are able to buy either a large quantity to carry in all stores or only a few pieces to carry in select stores.  For example, if a vendor has enough fabric to produce 600,000 blouses, but a department store only ordered 500,000, off-price buyers will purchase the extra 100,000 blouses – at a significant discount – and carry them in part of the chain.
  • Company owned distribution centers: T.J. Maxx and Marshalls’ nationwide distribution system allows for faster processing of goods to stores.  Therefore, buyers can purchase merchandise up until the last minute of any given season – not only allowing them to respond to trends much more quickly than other retailers (who buy several seasons in advance), but also allowing them to “swoop in” and negotiate a better deal by waiting until a vendor is highly motivated to sell.
  • We buy it, we own it: Unlike department and specialty store buyers, off-price buyers never return merchandise to their vendors. This motivates vendors to provide a better price up-front.
  • No sales ever: Off-price stores offer low prices every day, so the customer never has to wait for a sale.  Periodically, at the end of a season, any unsold merchandise will go on clearance, providing even further customer savings.
  • Don’t pay for the display:  Another way the stores can keep prices low is by keeping their operating costs low. Rather than invest in expensive fixtures and fancy displays, off-price retailers focus on giving customers the best merchandise at a great price.

Besides price, are there any other differences between shopping at T.J. Maxx vs. department stores?

T.J.Maxx buys differently that department stores, which is the main way we are able to offer amazing values on the same merchandise to consumers. We also don’t pay for the expensive fixtures and fancy displays---so we can focus on keeping costs down for the consumer.  Our merchandise is also organized differently, by size and department as opposed to designer.

More Insider Tips From Fat Wallet

Brian, who works for T.J. Maxx as a service coordinator, shared some great insider tips on how to maximize savings at T.J. Maxx.  Here are some of his best tips:

Yellow stickers are final clearance, so don't expect more markdowns if you see an item with yellow stickers.

Look at the upper right of a T.J. Maxx price ticket. There is a 2 digit number. This number is the month the item came into the store and this number goes up to 24. The current month is 14. If an item is more than 2 months old but doesn't have a yellow or red sticker then kindly ask an associate to check for a markdown for you. Most likely the item was missed and you could save a lot of money. Also, if it’s more than 4 months before with one red sticker the associate can ask the manager to check the computer in the office for additional markdown but this is less likely to happen.

If an Item has damage and no markdown or one. you could get an additional markdown, just ask.

If you see an item you want. sometimes it would be best if you wait a bit and come back when its marked down. Markdowns are 33%, which is a good savings Read all 10 tips at Fat Wallet

Good luck with the contest everyone.  I look forward to reading your comments!

Do your kids love to watch those Scholastic DVD's of favorite kids books set to great musica and famous actor's voices narrating. Examples like Goodnight Gorilla, The Snowy Day, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, what you pay for like 10 to 15 anywhere else you can get those DVD's for 5.99 at TJ Maxx. Also love to purchase exercise wear and shoes and purses there. Selection is amazing.

Scholastic DVD's of favorite kids stories, such as Goodnight Gorilla, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, The Snow Day at 5.99 beats the price of 10 to 15 you pay anywhere else. Also great selection of shoes, purses and exercise wear can be found at TJ Maxx.

Great article! I can't wait to use my new knowledge of the price tag number system to save some more money.

To save money on school supplies, I cruise all the office supply and chain stores the week school has started. Everything is on clearance and I can grab the basics like notebooks, pens and even lunch bags. I have a box to store for next year.

TJ MAXX and Marshalls have always been at the top of my list of favorite places to shop. I never fail to find a great outfit for either me or one of my 2 girls. They love to shop there too - because they know they get great clothes - and can get more of them for the same money I would have to spend at a department store. My favorite thing when I travel is to look for the local T J Maxx or Marshalls to see what merchandise they might have in their stores that ours might not - I am never disappointed!

What I learned in the article on WiseBread was the coding on the price tags - I never knew what that meant. Now I will be on the lookout for those numbers and try to see if I can get an even better deal!

Keep up the great work TJ MAXX and Marshalls!

When I go shopping the last thing I want to do is try to decipher the price ticket. Good grief.

I did learn a great tip that I never thought of, the number in the corner corresponding to the date the item arrived in store. What a wonderful tip to know. They always have so many items that sure it would be easy to miss tagging an item, so i will definitely be on the lookout for this. Also, I bought a pair of 9 West boots 2 years ago at T.J. Maxx and saved over 80% from the mall store. The absolute best deal I have ever found! I love these boots. Thanks T.J. Maxx.

Recently moved to a new town--no TJ Maxx or Marshalls, but there is a Ross only 15 minutes away. It is great to have things sorted by size--no distractors of things that are three sizes away. Anyway, think you could do an article on Ross?

Also love kath t @ 183's wording--right now my "life is good" stuff consists of loose tea my international friends have brought me from home in China, Nepal, India....

Bathing suits!

I hate spending a lot of money on bathing suits, and they are getting pricier by the year! I've gotten some wonderful bathing suits at TJ Maxx, often for less than half of the retail price. Some of my favorites have included Nautica tankinis, Tommy Hilfigger and Calvin Klein bathing suits.

I enjoyed reading how TJ Maxx keeps costs down. It really gives a shopper more confidence to purchase at TJ Maxx being sure he/she won't find the item any cheaper anywhere else.

I tend to buy tons of kitchen equipment at TJ Maxx. I just picked up some hot Pink Himalayan salt there last week.

But one thing to keep in mind when shopping, whether for a gift for a certain occasion or for back to school, is to shop early and often. This way you get the best selection.

My children range from 17 to 9 years old. I've taught my children from a very early age that shopping at discount stores is good for me and great for them because I'm spending a certain amount of money period. I tell them now we can shop and get a few items or shop and get a lot of items - your pick. They of course want as much as they can possibly get. I have also taught them that even though it's cool to wear what other kids are wearing, it's even cooler to just be you and not always wear something because other kids are wearing it - dare to be different. Luckily I have artistic children and they are satisfied with that bit of advise.

TJ Maxx has some of the best towels at low prices. I just purchased a set of towels and washcloths that were so thick I couldn't wait to take a bath and use them. My husband loves the towels that I have bought from TJ Maxx. We even have quite a few towels that we received as wedding gifts that we still love to this day.

Guest's picture

I had no idea about the months things came out and that it could be marked down depending on that. Thank you so much for that advise. I'll be passing this on to my girlfriends who are faithful TJ Maxx shoppers and I'm heading to TJ Maxx tomorrow to shop for kids and me (maybe the hubby too) :-)

To add with an answer to the questions asked. My mother just the other day purchased a beautiful handbag for $3 I couldn't believe it and she was so happy with that buy. TJ Maxx rocks!!! It's my therapy and home away from home! Living in an urban area, I love having several TJM's to shop in as often as I can for gifts, personal items, and homegoods. One time on a business trip, I learned that my casual attire would fall short of the dinner dress code. There was a TJM across the street from my hotel and during my lunch break, I scored the perfect black dress and Liz Claiborne slingback pumps, both with those beautiful yellow final markdown tags, for less than a total of $30! I made it back in less than an hour without missing a minute of my meetings, and looked like a million dollars at dinner. This isn't the only time TJM saved my life under short notice, but it's certainly one of my favorites. Keep up the great work!

My favorite Christmas gifts given in the last few years have been jewelry cases/boxes, I think I've given them to every female I've bought for. I don't know a brand name, but they are lockable, travel well and very well made, yet not expensive at all! This Christmas, my 4-year-old granddaughter is getting one with her own "jewels" tucked inside. I also really love the shoes and bags I find at TJ Maxx!!!

My favorite thing to buy at TJmax is also gifts. I have a big plastic tub I refer to as the 'gift closet'. I buy fun things throughout the year and keep them in the 'gift closet' so that i have last minute gifts for weddings, birthdays, etc. I've found that almost everyone loves a fun kitchen gadget or a nice set of sheets.
Favorite buys: My spice grinder--I looked FOREVER and I couldn't find one in stainless steel. I was walking around TJmax one day and there it was.
Sheets: I love good sheets and don't have a lot of cash.
My rubber ducky stuff. I have a rubber ducky themed bathroom and accessories are outrageously expensive. i went to TJmaxx one day and found rubber ducky towels, a trash can, and a toothbrush holder. All adorable and the bill was less than $20.

cdziuba@aol.com My Back To School shopping tip (as a veteran shopper of 4 school kids!) is to take each child shopping individually and then have a nice lunch together. I'm a long-time TJMaxx customer. I love the thrill of the hunt! Something new I learned was that TJMaxx buys items and owns them, unlike department stores, which makes vendors provide a better price initially, and lets TJMaxx sell the items to us at an excellent price!

I love TJ Maxx! It's a new store everytime you go in there and you never know what you might find! Some of my favorite deals: Coach wallet for $59.99, Hard Candy makeup for $3.99, Kate Spade shoes for $49.99, Alice and Olivia dress for $99! AMAZING!

Just recently, we bought my brother-in-law an NFL Atlanta Falcons Matt Ryan jersey for only $14.99, but the best deal I ever got was this beautiful pewter and turquoise light switch cover that is a star in our kitchen. Some of the best purchases I have made are the beauty products and home goods. I have found some incredible Anti-Aging products at 70% off the retail price!
Also, the home accessories and furniture products are incredible...I never buy a product from other furniture stores without checking TJ or Marshalls first, they will usually have it or something similiar (many times better).
I LOVE both stores.

You can't beat them for household linens! You should see the way I outfitted out new travel trailer on the cheap! From pads and bedding to towels and mats.....looks like an upscale B&B, with a kitchen!

I save a lot every year buying a year in advance & off season. Kids grow, so obviously buy one or two sizes larger. My rule has tended to be - always two sizes. I sew, if pants or sleeves are too long, they get shortened. The current styles really help (for boys) because they like to wear their cloths larger anyway. I just picked up two swim suits for my 16 year old for $2.38 each. :)
Happy bargain hunting,
Marleen

I buy socks and dress shirts for my husband from T.J.Max. I also buy clothes for my baby, gifts, jeans and tops for myself at T.J.Max. My sister-in-law once found a $150 pair of designer shorts marked down to $3! I get such a high from deals like that!!!
