Q&A WIth T.J. Maxx

Sonya Cosentini, a spokesperson for TJ Maxx, was kind enough to answer my questions about back-to-school shopping and her company.

What do you say to a kid who thinks she's too cool to shop at T.J. Maxx?

Shopping at off-price retailers is a win-win for both mom and kid—they can find the trends and mall-store names they are looking for and you as a parent can stay within your budget.  The best way to explain to your kids is to show them.  Ask them to go through a magazine or online and point out the looks they want to create for their back to school wardrobe.

Have them make a list, and then take them to T.J. Maxx first. They’ll be surprised that they will find all of those trends right there!  T.J. Maxx even has those same mall-store brands that kids crave, and once they see those in the rack, and parents explain how much more they can get by purchasing them there instead of the mall, they will be on board!

How much money can a typical family save at T.J. Maxx for back to school shopping?

Families can save hundreds of dollars on a back to school wardrobe by shopping off-price.  For example, a hoodie you might find at a mall-store will be up to 60% less at T.J. Maxx.  With the purchase of that piece alone, now you have more room in your budget for the other things your child needs to go back to school in style—like a new backpack or pair of sneakers!

What are the hottest fashion trends for girls this year?

There are so many amazing looks out there this season for girls! For the little girl, try colored skinny leg jeans with sparkly belts paired with a buffalo plaid tunic or graphic printed t-shirts.  Little girls express themselves with t-shirts with peace signs, butterflies and hearts on sublimation and watercolor patterns.  Printed scarves that feature the same patterns or tie-dye will be the must-have accessory for back to school.

For teen girls, it’s all about recreating their favorite teen tv celebrity look! For that upper east side style try skinny jeans with a plaid ruffled blouse and cropped jacket. Detailed ballet flats and brooches complete any preppy look. For the rocker teen, you’ll see them rocking leggings with cuts, rips, tears or lace trim, heeled booties and a tunic under a leather motorcycle jacket.  With plaid all the rage this year, the ‘grunge’ look is easy to achieve: pair torn and worn jeans with a buffalo plaid tunic and chunky heels.

What are the hottest fashion trends for boys this year?

It’s really all about the basics and how to layer those basics to create must-have looks for both boys and girls this back to school season! For boys, you’ll see madras plaid in shorts, paired with collared shirts and striped sweaters. For a more casual, rocker look, boys will don printed t-shirts with skulls and vintage rock band logos with worn jeans and a funky hooded sweatshirt.

How is T.J. Maxx able to provide designer labels at such cheap prices?  Are these items damaged in some way?

There are many ways that we are able to offer amazing value on designer merchandise, a few:

  • Buying closer to need: Our buyers travel 40+ weeks per year to negotiate with more than 10,000 vendors in over 60 countries (vs. department stores who buy seasonally). This allows more opportunity to score great deals.
  • Flexible “no walls” concept: Because not all stores carry the same merchandise, the buyers are able to buy either a large quantity to carry in all stores or only a few pieces to carry in select stores.  For example, if a vendor has enough fabric to produce 600,000 blouses, but a department store only ordered 500,000, off-price buyers will purchase the extra 100,000 blouses – at a significant discount – and carry them in part of the chain.
  • Company owned distribution centers: T.J. Maxx and Marshalls’ nationwide distribution system allows for faster processing of goods to stores.  Therefore, buyers can purchase merchandise up until the last minute of any given season – not only allowing them to respond to trends much more quickly than other retailers (who buy several seasons in advance), but also allowing them to “swoop in” and negotiate a better deal by waiting until a vendor is highly motivated to sell.
  • We buy it, we own it: Unlike department and specialty store buyers, off-price buyers never return merchandise to their vendors. This motivates vendors to provide a better price up-front.
  • No sales ever: Off-price stores offer low prices every day, so the customer never has to wait for a sale.  Periodically, at the end of a season, any unsold merchandise will go on clearance, providing even further customer savings.
  • Don’t pay for the display:  Another way the stores can keep prices low is by keeping their operating costs low. Rather than invest in expensive fixtures and fancy displays, off-price retailers focus on giving customers the best merchandise at a great price.

Besides price, are there any other differences between shopping at T.J. Maxx vs. department stores?

T.J.Maxx buys differently that department stores, which is the main way we are able to offer amazing values on the same merchandise to consumers. We also don’t pay for the expensive fixtures and fancy displays---so we can focus on keeping costs down for the consumer.  Our merchandise is also organized differently, by size and department as opposed to designer.

More Insider Tips From Fat Wallet

Brian, who works for T.J. Maxx as a service coordinator, shared some great insider tips on how to maximize savings at T.J. Maxx.  Here are some of his best tips:

Yellow stickers are final clearance, so don't expect more markdowns if you see an item with yellow stickers.

Look at the upper right of a T.J. Maxx price ticket. There is a 2 digit number. This number is the month the item came into the store and this number goes up to 24. The current month is 14. If an item is more than 2 months old but doesn't have a yellow or red sticker then kindly ask an associate to check for a markdown for you. Most likely the item was missed and you could save a lot of money. Also, if it’s more than 4 months before with one red sticker the associate can ask the manager to check the computer in the office for additional markdown but this is less likely to happen.

If an Item has damage and no markdown or one. you could get an additional markdown, just ask.

If you see an item you want. sometimes it would be best if you wait a bit and come back when its marked down. Markdowns are 33%, which is a good savings Read all 10 tips at Fat Wallet

Good luck with the contest everyone.  I look forward to reading your comments!

That yellow sticker tip is good, so is the season code info. I like to buy handbags especially - you can get some great deals, even on basics.

Oh, where to begin. Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Pants, Jeans, Skirts, Shirts, Sweaters,Dresses, and most of all SHOES. All are my favorite things. I have been shopping at TJMaxx for more than 25 years. The best things I have purchased were a pair of red "lizard boots" and spanx tights (reversible even!) for half price.

I have purchased many things at TJ Maxx, but one of the best things I purchased was Samsonite luggage. TJ Maxx has a good selection of luggage at great prices!

I would just like to thank T.J. Maxx for being there for me in all my times of need.
When my daughter needed school clothes, as a single parent money was tight. I waned my daughter to look good and feel good so we shopped at TJ.'s. And T.J's always carried us through on our tight budget.
When I got my first apartment and we needed to find some really cute fashionable things to dress it up with, we went to T.J.'s. Thank you T.J.'s for helping us get thought these tough times and offer us affordable and wonderful items to choose from.

differences between tj maxx & dept stores? the best differences is a lower prices at tjmaxx, plus i can usually find a better parking spot. who doesn't like to spend less $ and get a great parking spot to boot! also, i have found clerks at tj's to be very helpful (not always true at larger stores)

As a mother to two teenagers, and as a working mother, myself, we all know how expensive it is to shop for clothes nowadays. I always tell my children to buy something neutral and classic, one that will not go out of style. That is precisely how I shop for myself. Whenever I get few dollars saved up, I browse around the store to see if I can get a good buy on something. One just have to be patient but 99.9 percent, one will really get an amazing bargain at TJ's.
Sincerely,
Maria

I love the prices at TJ Maxx. During a time where everybody is watching their spending I know I can go to TJ Maxx and find a bargain. I recently purchased a swimsuit with a designer label, that would have cost me triple at the mall. I can't beleive how much you can save by shopping at TJ Maxx. I can't wait til my next shopping day!

I enjoy shopping at places like TJ Maxx and Marshalls. There's so many stylish clothing home goods at affordable prices. The last thing I got was a long, black hooded sweater that I adore. It was only $15. My only regret is that I didn't grab another one to replace it if something were to happen to it!

My favorite item I have purchased at TJ Maxx was a Bulgari tie. It had a really high thread count and looked great. It's really too bad I stained it after a few months... one which would not come out.

I LOVE Brian's suggestion of looking at the month in the top right corner and asking for markdowns if it's an older item. I kinda guessed that all stores carry different products because there's a "Designer" section in one of the TJ Maxxes by me and it has amazing stuff.

My favorite all-time TJ Maxx purchase was a Marc Jacobs purse.

Back to school shopping tip? NEVER buy anything that's not on sale. And see if you can negotiate with the store--most stores will mark something down or give you a discount if you ask. Especially if you are willing to walk away without it.

I would like to say I did not realize that prices are often 66% off. I love the selection with all the different brands intermingled--you don't have to go from dept to dept to find other brands. I also LOVE the BOOKS!!! They are such a find--great titles and a super great price!!

Hitting Value Village/Goodwill for teen jeans in summer. Anytime before August is great time for jean selection. Not only are the very different (and to a teens eyes, funky) designs I often find brand name as a much lower price. It may be hard to think of it whenyou are baking in the summer heat, but a few hours sweating in the store will have great results in September.

I have been shopping at TJ Maxx for years and have come to truly appreciate its overall value.

The tip I enjoyed the most was the price ticket numbering system, as sometimes I'd wonder how long the item had been in the store and will now be a potential way to score an additional markdown.

I am an accessory fanatic, so my alltime favorite purchase would be my designer handbag- in fuschia! :)

My back-to-school shopping tip? Shop at leisure and find your style for a great value.

Many years ago (probably 10 or more) I bought a long navy blue dress at Marshall's. It is a classic style and always makes me look slim. I first wore it for a fancy party then (years later) for my wedding. I haven't had an occasion to wear it recently but I feel secure just knowing that it's there when I need it.

Guest's picture

My back to school shopping tip is to shop in the off season. Yes, you just need to buy bigger sizes.

Thanks

Guest's picture

I love T.J. Maxx and Marshall's. If I'm looking for clothes, shoes, bedding, or towels, I always go there before the department stores. In fact, much of my wardrobe comes from off-price stores. Why spend more when I can find things like a beautiful Calvin Klein jacket on clearance for $20? Food items are another thing I buy there - coffee, jams/jellies, candy, etc.

By reading the article about T J Maxx, I learned about the two digit number in the corner which tells when the merchandise entered the store. That is a nice piece of information to have since there may be additional discounts if the item is more than 2 to 4 months old. Thanks, Lacie

After being a SAHM for 10 years, I was headed off to a conference this past spring. Thinking my jeans and t-shirts wouldn't be appropriate, I headed off to TJ Maxx to "professionalize" my wardrobe. I was so impressed with my great buys that I made a video and put it up on my blog!

One of the things I indulge in at TJ Maxx is the beautiful English and European made soaps and toiletries that are always available at wonderful prices. I usually buy too many, but they make lovely gifts.

I recently purchased a bathroom wall shelf at a great saving at TJMaxx. Purchasing this at a regular retail store would have been double the price. I was thrilled to purchase a high quality glass bathroom shelf for $19.00.

The last thing I purchased at T.J. Maxx was designer jeans (Joe's Jeans). I get all of my designer jeans there. You can't find them cheaper anywhere else, and the steep discount helps since I have to get all of me jeans hemmed anyways.

Much to my husbands dismay, I shop every TJ Maxx and Marshalls in the suburbs of my city....Whenever I travel, I map out the locations in the place I am visiting. I liked the company so much, I bought the stock! In this economic climate, the prices and value suit a lot of people. Being a teacher, even I have to have a few "back to school" outfits...This article makes the point that they carry brand name styles for less---Vera Bradley, Ralph Lauren, Coach, Dooney and Bourke. Even my twenty-something son is trained in the TJX tradition. He finds Burton jackets, Nike shirts, cashmere sweaters and tons of stuff to decorate and outfit his first apartment. I especially like the housewares department. If you were to come to my home you would recognize many things from the shelves of TJ Maxx and Marshalls!

The tip about checking for further markdowns based on how long something has been there is brilliant. Thanks!

I was happy to learn about the 2 month-rule on the price tag's code so I can check if the cost of a "must-have" item can be reduced to better fit into my budget.

TJ's buyers are spot-on for finding the coolest fashions (and I was also thrilled to shop at TK Maxx last year in London!) My girlfriends quickly become converts to TJ Maxx after complimenting one of my "finds" and learning what amazing deals can be found. I'm a TJ Maxx fan for life!

I bought gorgeous Liz Claibourne luggage for my honeymoon at TJ Maxx. We needed something and I felt all the department stores were so expensive for a lot of basic black. I love to save, my friends always laugh at me because if there is a coupon associated with a store or restaurant I will have it printed and ready to go. The tip that I hearted the most was :

Look at the upper right of a T.J. Maxx price ticket. There is a 2 digit number. This number is the month the item came into the store and this number goes up to 24. The current month is 14. If an item is more than 2 months old but doesn't have a yellow or red sticker then kindly ask an associate to check for a markdown for you. Most likely the item was missed and you could save a lot of money. Also, if it’s more than 4 months before with one red sticker the associate can ask the manager to check the computer in the office for additional markdown but this is less likely to happen.

You better believe I will be using this to my advantage. They already have great prices, but shopping is much more fun the more that you are able to save. If I come across a sticker that reflects the possibility for more of a markdown I will be all over the situation.

I have to say the best purchase I made, ever, was at TJMax. I purchased a beautifully tailored black suit with a colorful satin blouse for $50. The blouse by itself would have cost me that much.
