Best investment: yourself

Framed House
I read a lot of investment books. I read mainstream books, where the author assumes the future is going to be a lot like the recent past, but I also like the "economic disaster" books where the author warns that something (government debt, globalization, inflation, energy crisis, stock market crash, real estate debt, hedge funds, derivitives, etc.) will send the economy off the rails. Their portfolio recommendations are so different (stocks, bonds and money markets versus gold, silver, and stockpiled food) that it's hard to find the right path. There is one thing, though, that's always a good investment: Yourself.

Book Review: The 4-Hour Workweek

Posted July 16, 2007 - 02:41 by Philip Brewer

Career and Income

The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss is really three small books in one. The first thing Ferriss does is make the case that you ought to figure out exactly what you want to do, and then arrange your life so that you can do that. This is one of those ideas that is at once blindingly obvious and completely far-fetched. What else would you do? How many actually manage it? Ferriss spices these parts up with extended examples of the travel, study, and adventure that he has arranged his life around.

Working from home, as a contractor or full-time employee for a legitimate business, seems to be a great way of making money while keeping a flexible schedule with plenty of time for family, friends, fun, and sleep. Or is it? Last year, I investigated contract writing as a way to give myself what I thought might be a more me-friendly schedule.

pink slip
digg_url = 'http://www.wisebread.com/you-re-fired-20-signs-that-a-pink-slip-is-coming'; There are two types of employee. One has a good idea of what they do, who they are and what position they play in the company. They are savvy. They know the score. They are under no delusions, and will no doubt leave for another job long before they are ever considered as cannon-fodder.And then there’s the other kind. The guy who could get Gandhi to hate him. The woman who spends most of her day chatting on the phone to friends or doing online shopping. Or the nice chap in sales who is completely oblivious that the recent merger means his job is now obsolete. They all have Ostrich Syndrome. They couldn’t see a pink slip coming if it was 8ft tall and glowing in the dark, screaming “you’re fired!”

I like Sarah's post about fun ways to make money, and I thought I'd add to that list. These are more "turn your hobbies into a job" type posts, and I don't suppose that they are all viable for everyone, but with a little creativity, they can be parlayed into part-time gigs.

Adaptation: Lessons learned from being unemployed

Almost 3 years ago I quit my 9-6 job to "take a break." I quit not because I hated that particular job, but because I hated the 9-6 part. It also didn't help that my commute was 3 hours round trip and I didn't get paid well. I thought I just needed some time to figure out what I wanted to do. I was still under the assumption that I should be able to find something I loved to do and get paid well doing it. Hell I was even quoted in the LA Times saying something to that effect. Something about my generation demanding more from a job than just job security. We want the works: good location, cool coworkers, fun duties, excellent pay. I suppose I was naïve to think that I could be different and settle for nothing less. On the other hand, I've yet to go back to that life, so perhaps that dream is not so elusive after all. Only time will tell.
