In certain parts of the world (Russia comes to mind), people have stood in line for hours just to get some food. It’s messed up, but I get it. If standing in line for hours will result in putting a meal on the table for your hungry family, I’m right there. But why are people spending hours in line for a cell phone?!

Tired of those early termination fees that cell phone companies stick you with? Well, help may be on the way, but it may just be a case of the fox watching the hen-house.

If you lose or drown your cellular phone before you're eligible for an upgrade, don't buy a new one. Ask around and you're sure to find someone with an unused handset that's been sitting around since their last upgrade. AT&T will replace a SIM card for free. Not only is it frugal, it's earth-friendlier than buying a new phone.

For the last 7-8 years, I have been a loyal Virgin Mobile customer. I liked the prepaid pricing plan, the customer service, I didn’t want a large monthly bill or overage charges. Everything was perfect. Well, almost everything.

Anyone with a cell phone has suffered from those “no signal” or “service lost” moments. And they usually happen when your car has broken down or someone’s chasing you through the forest with a large axe. As I live in snowy Colorado and have a Virgin Mobile (weak reception) I have been researching and testing methods to boost my phone in case of emergencies. Here are the five methods that worked, with varying success, for me.

My cell phone is my only phone, which saves me quite a bit of money every month. Telemarketers don't have the number. Which is good, because I hate wasting airtime telling telemarketers what they can do to themselves.
Looks like I had better brush up on my insults.
According to the
Seattle Times, a locally-owned company named
Intelius is putting together a cell phone directory. It costs $15 to search for an individual's cell phone number. That's right - for $15, your cell number can be given out to anyone.

"It seems like a great deal, but maybe it's cheaper somewhere else?" I've said those words a lot, maybe not out loud but certainly in my head. The thing I love about shopping online is that I can instantly see if something is cheaper at another store. But, when you're out and about, how do you do the same thing? How do you keep your advantage? Well, if you take your cell phone with you, FruCall may just be the answer.

Consumerist covered this a while back, but I'm just confirming its value after having tried it out.
You can lower your cell phone bill by moving your cell phone to a state with lower taxes (unless, of course, you already live in said state). Nevada, thanks to it's gaming industry, has really low taxes - 1.14% for cell phones. As an aside, I'd like to mention that if you are road tripping, stock up on booze in Las Vegas. Not only can you buy large amounts of hard liquor at Costco, but the taxes are so low that they feel non-existent.

My home state of Washington is set to require, by law, that drivers who want to yack on the cell phone use a hands-free set or earpiece. Another bill, banning text messaging while driving, which is arguably even more dangerous, has already passed the state House and is expected to pass the Senate and be signed into law soon.
Car-based phone conversation against the law? But we're only making it a secondary offense here. Hey, that's how the whole whacky seatbelt-usin' craze got started!

As a dealhunter, I've seen a few offers that have defied reason. Here's another one.
Drop by Amazon at this link and pick yourself up a nice new Motorola cell phone for the grand total of $0.01. Not a bad deal. But it get's better. You also qualify for a $100 rebate. Which means you get a spanky new phone and around $100 cash, all for buying something you want anyway.

I know we've had a lot of chit-chat back and forth over the past month about the iPhone. Well, it looks like those boffins are giving you even more value for money. I particularly like the sideburns.

If you paid for long distance phone service in the last 3 years, you are eligible for a refund of the U.S. federal taxes paid on that service. The government estimates that up to $10 billion will be refunded to consumers.
