Food and Drink

I love receiving homemade Christmas gifts, and also enjoy making my own. However, a homemade gift can be really expensive if you pay full price for the ingredients. Fortunately, a lot of the ingredients listed below are on sale now. I like to “stockpile them,” so I am ready to go when I have time. Most of the recipes are also pretty easy.

Taxes

H&R Block

I have a confession to make: I love tax season. Not just the days when I do my taxes or when I file my taxes or get a chunk of change deposited to my account, but the entire Tax Season: from beginning of January when you're allowed to start filing until April 15: the big due date. Honestly, I think Tax Season is a lot like the Holiday Season. Don't believe me? Check out their similarities.

Last Minute Wrapping Paper: 5 Options

Homemade Wrapping Paper

I've been known to wrap presents literally five minutes before the family has planned to open them — and that means there's no time for a last minute run to the store for a roll of wrapping paper. If you're in the same boat (or you just want to wrap presents with something you already have), don't worry about buying wrapping paper — you've got a couple of wrapping paper alternatives at home.

Making Christmas the Smart Way

Golden Christmas

When I was growing up, I looked forward to the mysterious day that would come anywhere from a month to a couple of weeks before Christmas, when my mom would call us and everyone in the family would drop everything and "make Christmas." That's what we called the putting up of decorations, the choosing of the Christmas tree, and its decorating. That day started a whole sub-season for us, where the house would be filled with the most amazing smells and there were always cookies and candy canes and enough hot apple cider for as many cold, snowy kids as walked through the front door.

Now that I'm the adult in my house, I'm finding that making Christmas is suddenly my job. And it's expensive. ARGH! Let me tell you, it's almost been enough to send me running down the street barefooted, calling for anyone available to please (PLEASE!) make Christmas for me.But I persevered (aren't you all relieved?) and here is some of what I learned.

When it comes to thinking up creative holiday gifts, it's worth taking a look in your pantry. If you're looking for a way to make your own holiday gift from scratch, consumables — better known as food — can be the way to go. After all, you're giving something that shows that you're willing to spend time on a gift, something that tastes great and something the recipient doesn't have to find a way to store.

Giving Gifts That Will Save Money

Present

I love the holiday season. I love being able to bake cookies and give them to my friends, put up decorations and — most of all — give gifts. But with only a couple of weeks left until Hanukkah and a few more after that until Christmas, I'm really trying to buckle down with my gift lists. With the current economic crunch, I know a lot of people are focusing on items they can make themselves or that they can purchase on sale. I'm taking a little bit of a different route this year, though. Instead, I'm focusing on gifts I can give that will help my friends and family save money in the long run. So far, I've found that my choice of gifts hasn't been any more expensive than gifts I've given in years past — and in some cases, it's been significantly less expense.

Revive Old Toys for Extra Christmas Savings (and Sanity)

It has officially begun. My four-year-old has tuned out the real world in favor of loud Saturday morning commercials advertising the best of must-have toys. Every new ad has him wide-eyed and drooling. Only once each has ended, does he break the gaze of the TV long enough to look at me and shout, “I WANT THAT!” Determined to do something to show my son that he was far from lacking in his possessions, I developed a system that every parent should consider before the holiday season gets too far underway.
