Posted December 12, 2008 - 13:12 by Nora Dunn

Art and Leisure

I recently found myself sitting around a dinner table in Hawaii with a number of new traveling acquaintances. Golden Christmas

When I was growing up, I looked forward to the mysterious day that would come anywhere from a month to a couple of weeks before Christmas, when my mom would call us and everyone in the family would drop everything and "make Christmas." Before you know it – without even starting your Christmas shopping, you have blown your holiday budget.

So how do you navigate this season of dinner parties and other seasonal cultural expectations without going broke at the end of the day? The answer to this question is as much a mystery to me as it is to anybody else. But here are a few ideas:

Virginia Woolf famously said that women needed a ‘room of one’s own’ in order to create. But what if you didn’t graduate from the University of Iowa with the New Yorker wanting to print any word you breathe? What if you dropped out of art school? What if you aren’t quite on the grant track yet? What can you do to find that room cheap or free? And what if you aren’t really sure whether you are any good?

Provided the fog hasn't rolled in too early, San Francisco can be a surprisingly great place to be outside. Here are some suggestions you might try.
