Coincidentally Green: Saving the Planet When you Least Expect It

Posted 33 min 7 sec ago by Myscha Theriault

Green Living

It struck me recently as I was working on something in the kitchen that what I was doing was actually quite eco-friendly. The funny thing was, I made the actual choice as a budget strategy. So I started thinking, were there other areas of my life where I was being “coincidentally green”?

How Big of a House Do You Really Need?

Posted 2 days 17 hours ago by Xin Lu

Personal Finance, Frugal Living, Lifestyle, Green Living

For my entire life, I have never lived in a place bigger than 1400 square feet. The smallest dwelling I had was a studio less than 400 square feet which I shared with my parents. Because of my experience of living in small homes I think of anything over 2000 square feet as excessive for two to three residents. Today I want to highlight some of the reasons why I prefer smaller abodes.

Posted 2 weeks 4 days ago by Myscha Theriault

Green Living

Whether it’s here at the lake, elsewhere, or both, my husband and I know we want to build a home from scratch some day. We also know we want to do our ecological part when we do so. With all of the information floating around out there, our heads were starting to spin whenever we looked into the subject. So when a colleague at Chronicle asked if I was interested in checking out a review copy of their new green design title by Suzi Moore McGregor and Nora Burba Trulsson, I was truly relieved that some guidance might be in my immediate future. Read on to see what I learned, and whether this book is for you.

CFL Bulbs: Greener than most, but not green enough

Posted 7 weeks 1 hour ago by Thursday Bram

CFL Light bulb

I’ve embraced the compact fluorescent light bulb revolution wholeheartedly. I preach their money-saving abilities and cite statistics about energy. I comment on brands and varieties (daylight bulbs remain my favorite). I even point to them as environmentally friendly options since the use of CFL bulbs practically guarantees less light bulbs kicking around the local landfill. But, with the growing use of CFL bulbs, a little problem with that claim that a purchase of a CFL bulb is support for environmentalism. You see, when more CFL bulbs are used, more are also thrown away. And CFL bulbs contain mercury.
