How Big of a House Do You Really Need?

For my entire life, I have never lived in a place bigger than 1400 square feet. The smallest dwelling I had was a studio less than 400 square feet which I shared with my parents. Because of my experience of living in small homes I think of anything over 2000 square feet as excessive for two to three residents. Today I want to highlight some of the reasons why I prefer smaller abodes.

Trent

Music fans of the world, unite. The very cool Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails (or who basically IS Nine Inch Nails), is letting fans download the entire new album The Slip free at the NIN website. This is one further slap in the face to the RIAA, and a move that will no doubt shake up the archaic music industry even further.

Are You a Yawn?

I am familiar with the meaning of hippies and yuppies, but today I heard a funny new word for a demographic of people - yawns. YAWN stands for Young and Wealthy but Normal. It is a pretty silly acronym, but this is how the radio program I was listening to described this group of people.

Why You Should Donate a Blood Sucking Timeshare

Posted 3 weeks 2 days ago by Xin Lu

Personal Finance, Frugal Living, Lifestyle, Taxes

My parents always told me that buying a timeshare is a bad idea because of the inflated upfront cost and perpetual maintenance and exchange fees the timeshare companies pile on. It is also quite difficult to sell a timeshare you no longer want because there is usually a giant supply of them on the market. If you do want to get rid of a money sucking timeshare, donating it may be the most economical option.

Annoyed

I was in McDonald's this morning, returning a RedBox movie rental. I've seen a lot more of this place since I started using RedBox actually, and although I don't order food I get to see many other people get their meals. And I am staggered at the way most people treat the staff. Has the milk of human kindness gone off? It certainly seems sour.

NEVER pay for a RedBox DVD rental again

RedBox

Why go to Blockbuster or Hollywood Video? Why pay between $4-$5 for a DVD movie rental? Why pay anything for a DVD rental ever again? For the last month, I haven't paid for one new release movie at RedBox, and sometimes I've rented two or three in one day. It's legit, it's easy and if you ever pay even one cent for a DVD rental again, well, you're paying too much.

Europe Reborn As A Budget Destination?

Receipt showing a coffee costing .80 euro in lisbon

I had written off Europe as a possibility for the budget traveler long ago. I did it with great difficulty, because I know from experience there is nothing like the food, history, and atmosphere of Europe. Still, a strong euro and expensive flights seemed to offer no other choice. That is, until I read about a deal to be made on Sunday.

Rich by Thirty

I read this book because I was intrigued by the 25 year-old author. By the time she was eight years old, she was earning money by operating a lemonade stand in the summer and shoveling snow in the winter. On her 10th birthday, she used the $100 of gift money she received to purchase a Government Savings Bond. At age 14, she bought her first mutual funds. Four years later, she was investing in stocks.

Retirement on the installment plan

Beachfront

Among the fraction of the population who manage to put money aside, many view their investments through the lens of retirement.  They've got a number in mind--call it $X--enough that they never need to work again.  Until they've got that, they're stuck working away at the daily grind.  There's another way to do it, though.  Make your goal to live live on your own terms for the whole length of it, not just for a little while at the end.
