Life Without Television

Posted October 7, 2008 - 16:26 by Andrea Dickson

Frugal Living, Technology, Lifestyle

I haven't had a television in years. It's not because I'm so busy mountain-climbing or saving the world. It's not because I'm really good at saving money, either. It's mostly because I just don't need it that badly, even though I sometimes really want it.

Five Ways VHS Tapes Still Rock

Posted August 9, 2008 - 05:31 by Linsey Knerl

Frugal Living, Art and Leisure

Friends of mine have barely gotten over the Blu-ray vs. HD DVD war, and I’m still stuck back in the 80’s (remember when Betamax was struggling to be on top?) It’s not that I don’t appreciate the finer points of DVD’s. I just still love certain irreplaceable features of good ol’ VHS tape.

DVDs Freer than Free--No, Really, Really Free

Posted April 5, 2008 - 19:00 by Catherine Shaffer

Frugal Living

I noticed Paul's interesting article (NEVER Pay for a Redbox DVD Rental Again ) about using Redbox codes to rent movies for free, and in theory, I am all for it. But we don't have Redbox nearby, and I would never manage to return a movie in 24 hours with my crazy life. Fortunately, I have a diabolical method of getting movies for free. Even free-er than Redbox free! Nowadays, I laugh as I drive by Hollywood video. Why did I ever pay $4 to rent a movie? Why, God, why?

How to get a job--learn the secret from a bad movie

Posted March 8, 2008 - 05:41 by Philip Brewer

Career and Income

Rambo-ette

I've read a bunch of books on how to do a job search. They all talk about networking. They all talk about researching the company--knowing what they do and what they need done. They all talk about "creating" a job--presenting yourself as a solution to a problem. I read the books, but I didn't understand what they meant, until I saw this really bad movie.

Frugal... or just plain wrong?

Posted 2 years ago by Andrea Dickson

You know what I love? Getting something for nothing. Oh, it's rare. It's also sort of greedy and raises all kinds of ethical questions. How far would YOU go to save, or make, a dollar or two?

Here are some examples of 'something for nothing' that fall into a morally gray area. I'm not endorsing, advocating, recommending, encouraging, or promoting any of these, but I'm curious as to how our readers feel about them. Like taking an extra piece of candy from the porch bowl in Halloween, everyone probably has a different perception of what constitutes right or wrong.

Where would you draw the line on these examples? Would you...

Trading Places

Eddie Murphy's Trading Places is one of my favorite movies of all time. However, I have always felt a twinge of guilt when I watched the movie with other people.

You see, here's my deep dark secret: I don't really understand what happened during the climatic scene at the commodities exchange! Lucky for me, Wikipedia has the answer:

FBI Considered "It's A Wonderful Life" Communist Propaganda

George and Mary Bailey looking happy

I love It's a Wonderful Life because it teaches us that family, friendship, and virtue are the true definitions of wealth.

In 1947, however, the FBI considered this anti-consumerist message as subversive Communist propaganda (read original FBI memo).

According to Professor John Noakes of Franklin and Marshall College, the FBI thought Life smeared American values such as wealth and free enterprise while glorifying anti-American values such as the triumph of the common man.
