Cat owners spend 55% of their budget on routine and surgical vet visits. Some of these visits are necessary; however, many could be prevented.

Who doesn’t fall in love with the many animals featured in hit movies of today and years past? You may be hard-pressed to find someone who didn’t want to adopt 101 cute spotted dogs or wish to cuddle with a little, talking Chihuahua but the reality is the animals we see in the movies or on television are simply not reality.

Eight years ago my family purchased our dog Happy on a total whim. Since then we have made some mistakes in raising him that cost us quite a bit. We also faced other challenges in raising him but we would not give him up for another dog. In my previous post about the hardships of life on a six figure income (queue strings), I mentioned in passing that we had a $4000 veterinary bill for our dog. A couple of people mentioned veterinary health insurance. Nala was actually too old to have qualified for insurance at the time she died. We would have had to have signed her up when she was younger. After Nala died, I checked out veterinary health insurance plans, hoping to save ourselves the same ordeal with our new puppy, Chewie. When I studied details of several plans, I concluded that these insurance programs are not a good deal for pet owners.

I just spent $1200 on a facelift for my dog. Before you go telling me that I should be put down, let me explain that it wasn't elective surgery. My dog is a Pekingese, and say what you will, I don't think that there's much you can do to make a Pekingese look "good". I mean, I love their ugly little mugs the way they are. But my dog kept getting these infections above his nose.
