Do Americans really want to "Go Dutch"?

I just read a very interesting article by an American expat named Russell Shorto in the Netherlands titled "Going Dutch - How I Learned to Love the European Welfare State". The author describes his shock at a 52% top income tax bracket and his eventual acceptance of the social benefits of living amongst the Dutch. Here are some highlights of his experience and my thoughts on the subject.

If you've recently lost your job due to the shaky economy, and you've filed for unemployment benefits, you might be surprised when your former employer attempts to block your unemployment by saying that you were fired. Well, be prepared for the possibility - plenty of companies are challenging laid-off employees rights to benefits in order to save money on unemployment insurance.
