How This Card Works

The U.S. Bank College Visa Credit Card is a simple credit card which provides students the opportunity to build their credit without a rewards program that can sometimes become confusing and difficult to manage.

Other Benefits

Overdraft protection. If you have a U.S. Bank account, cardmembers can enable Overdraft Protection to transfer funds automatically from the credit card into the checking account when you need them, eliminating the risk of overdraft fees and returned payments.

FlexControl. U.S. Bank offers cardholders its online tool, FlexControl, for assisting in avoiding interest and late fees when you set your account to make automatic payments. FlexControl also allows you to select purchases that you want to pay down faster, so you don't incur interest on purchases such as groceries or gasoline. With FlexControl Essentials, you could even select up to seven types of purchases from the everyday category that you want to automatically pay in full each month, thus avoiding any additional finance charges.

Pros

No annual fee. There are a number of student cards that don't charge an annual fee, but this is important especially with a plain vanilla card that doesn't offer extra perks or rewards. (See also: The 5 Best Credit Cards with No Annual Fees)

Simple credit card. When you're in the process of building a positive credit rating, sometimes it's best to focus on a simple credit card such as this one that doesn't include any distracting bells and whistles. Rewards programs and extra perks can sometimes end up causing more debt. This card provides all the basics of a credit card that can help build your credit as a college student. Cons

No rewards program. Student credit cards don't always include rewards programs as the focus is generally on just establishing a positive credit history. However, there are cards for college students that provide valuable rewards for purchases. If you are already in the habit of paying your balance in full each month, you could be missing out on rewards. (See also: The 5 Best Cash Back Credit Cards)

Foreign transaction fee. If you frequently travel abroad or plan to use your credit card for foreign purchases, it's important you choose one without a foreign transaction fee. (See also: The 5 Best Credit Cards with No Foreign Transaction Fees)

Who This Card Is Best For
