There's an old joke people tell around here. One farmer asks another, "What would you do, if you won a million dollars?" The other farmer thinks for a moment, then says, "I guess keep farming until the money runs out."

I didn't give up very much to become a full-time writer (because I had been saving for this for a long time — the closing of the site where I worked just accelerated things by a couple of years). We dropped our standard of living just a bit. If I won a million dollars, we could move back up to the standard of living that we had when I was getting paid a salary. We had also been looking for houses, and have had to put that on-hold indefinitely. (I want a small house within walking distance of downtown. I've got plans to make it super energy-efficient.) Winning a million dollars would make buying a house possible.

Other than that, I don't expect winning a million dollars would change my life a whole lot. I pretty much like my life just as it is — why screw it up?

Sarah Winfrey

I would pay off student loans and then buy a house, though in this market I might wait a couple of years, until we know more of what is actually going to happen with real estate. I would invest a large chunk of the rest of it, though I have no idea how, off the top of my head. That much money is beyond what I know how to invest right now, so I'd read some good books and talk to some good people.

The most important thing (at least to me!) that I'd do with it, though, is use it as an opportunity to quit my job. I have a pretty complex business idea in mind that would play off of my writing, art, and people skills, and I'd focus on that now instead of going slowly at it, as I am now.

Julie Rains

If I added $1 million (tax free) to my assets, I would:

  1. Start a charitable organization, perhaps structured as a foundation, perhaps not that would fund non-profits with great ideas, committed volunteers, and limited start-up resources; these non-profits could be involved in any endeavor but I would look favorably on those who would a) give Internet access and appropriate resources to senior community centers and retirement homes so that senior adults could go digital (don't laugh, once they get the hang of it, they'll be blogging away, making new friends globally, sending digital images of bingo night to their grandchildren, etc.) and b) increase green spaces and opportunities for outdoor activities, mainly for children but for all ages

  2. Buy a second home in the Blue Ridge Parkway, where I will bicycle during uncrowded times, host family reunions and parties, and invite kids, families, etc. to go hiking

  3. Hire a professional organizer as I am nearly hopelessly disorganized when it comes to filing papers, storing legos, placing tupperware containers neatly on racks, etc.

Justin Ryan

Sadly, these days, a million isn't really that much, so it wouldn't go as far as I'd like. Here goes:

  • A 3BR house (one for me, one for my home office, and one for company) in the area I used to live, with a big kitchen, and the furniture to put in it.
  • A new fuel-efficient car.
  • A vacation to London. (I haven't had a real vacation since 1997.)

The rest I'd take in cash, put in a wheel barrow, roll it in to my bank branch, dump it in front of my personal banker's desk, and say "Look at all this. I just don't know what to do with it — can you think of something?" (Based on a running joke between the two of us.)

Linsey Knerl

Assuming it is AFTER taxes, I'd like to start a small family-support office in my hometown. I'd staff some counselors and support workers and contract with the state to assist families in the area.

I'd also like to buy a few hundred acres of farmland to rent out. The land would generate some passive income while leaving something for my children's inheritance.

Andrea Dickson

I suppose I'd pay off my mortgage and my sister's. The rest, I'd split between investing in conservative stuff, like stocks and bonds, and I'd probably invest a hefty chunk in Wise Bread.

Paul Michael

I'd give my $1 million to Richard Branson, telling him he could keep half of the profits he made from whatever venture he decided to start with it. He's way smarter than me, I know he'd turn the $1 million into some serious cash. Then I'd buy my own island and retire there with my family, sipping ice cold beers on a perfect white beach.

William Chen

I would start a small venture capital fund modeled after Y Combinator. The fund will invest $10,000 to $20,000 on small startups like Reddit during their initial development stages. It will be a great opportunity to meet lots of exciting and smart people. Of course, the prospect of hitting home runs and earning billions is a nice bonus as well.

Tell us what you would do with a million bucks in the comments and be entered in a random drawing to win a $25 gift certificate from Amazon.com! Deadline to enter is 11/10. Only one entry per person.

This drawing is over. Congrats to Lauren, the winner of the drawing! Thanks to everyone who participated.

What I would do if someone gave me $ 1 million.

If someone gave to me $ 1 million I would use it to travel because I like travelling. I would go to America, Australia, Japan, and Hawaii. I would travel to those countries because I think they are most interesting and I could learn a lot about them and their different cultures. It costs a lot of money to get there so I would use some of my $ 1 million to get there.

I would buy a car because they are the most important thing to have it in life. You Could use it to go to work, to go shopping, and to travel to places that aren't too far from where I live. I would also use it to go to my friend’s house.

I would buy my own house. I would use it for school like to University or college. Also I would use it to help someone who haven’t money. I would help my family. I would buy food. I would. I would buy clothes, Phone, TV, and Laptop. I would open my own business.

This is one of my favorite discussions because it shows you the level of creativity one has. Personally, I'd make sure I got to see a hockey game in every city where the NHL plays. Then I'd make sure to hit 18 rounds on every golf course I could find, especially the nice ones. I'd take guitar lessons, dancing lessons, singing lessons. I'd hire a maid, and I would travel. I'd take a cruise. I'd visit my friend in Germany. There is so much that one could do with a million smackers besides donate it to charity or buy a house or a business. I was expecting this article to be exciting and full of ideas, but it seems most people are pretty boring.

If I had a million dollars, I would give 100,000 dollars to my church, 100,000 dollars to each one of my family members (5), and the rest would go in my bank account. I'm only 13, almost 14, so I don't really need that money for a house or college or anything. If I put it in the bank, I could make some more money off of that. INTEREST! I still dont know how that works, but I do know that I would make more money by leaving it in the bank. That's pretty much all I would do.

I could really use a million dollars right now. First I would pay off the mortgage on my suburban home and buy a nice flatscreen television. Then, I would take a long vacation to someplace warm like Hawaii or possibly buy a home there. I would donate about 100,000 to a charity, spend around 50 grand on a sweet SUV, and put the rest in the bank.

With a million dollars the first thing I would do is buy my lifelong friend a home beuse she has less than I do and she has MS.Then I would put some money in some kind of bank account for my two young grandsons and then help out some programs that I feel are important like clean water and food for underpriviledged children. Then I would go fishing!

open up IRA account, money market account, etc.
Make more money by investing in my business

Ok, Here's what I would do..

1. QUIT WORKING ASAP and NEVER HOLD A JOB AGAIN FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.

1. Pay off my student loans which are currently about $42,000.

2. Buy a Really Nice LUXURY RV big enough for about 8 travelers.

2.1 I would Hire a Driver to drive the RV so I could party all the time while I and my friends travel!!!

3. I would start traveling ALL around America visiting EVERY Music Festival I can find. I love String Cheese Incident, The Dead, Phish, etc. I would travel all around the USA visiting every Music Festival I could find. I would party and hang out with the people I meet and we would all have a great time living life the way it SHOULD be lived, for fun, family, and laughter.

3.2 NOW it get's interesting.. I would WRITE A BOOK about my travels!!! I would do a Video about it as well and sell it and I bet I could make $50 MILLION in sales. It would be a reality show about my travels all around America with interviews, etc.

The title of my show would be "Rockin & Rollin across America Living the Slacker American dream!!

I already work over 100 hours per week so that I can sustain Table Talk Ministries, we make free home repairs for the elderly and the disabled.
First, I would eliminate the waiting list, we currently have 36 on it.
Then I would purchase a couple newer trucks with tool beds and trailers so we could be more effective in our work.
Lastly, I would be able to start a proper ad campaign to bring in donations, (they're tax deductible).
I actually, might splurge on a vacation/honeymoon, I haven't had a vacation since 1982, I got married in 2002 and we never got to go on a honeymoon.
I would continue to work until I knew for sure that Table Talk could become self-sustaining.

I'd probably sock 800k away for retirement at age 40. The rest I would spend on:

Education-25k
Family-25k
Travel-25k
New Camper Trailer w/Truck-50k
Living Expenses-50k
Small Investment/Idea-25k

I could see how it all turns out in a year or two. Hopefully, I will be able to get a better job by then.

Firstly, I would buy my Mum a house that is large enough and convenient for my grandma and sister to be under the one roof. I will buy mum a new car and pay all her bills 12 months in advance as well as give her spending money so she doesn't need to worry about finances anymore. Then I will pay off my dad's house and also give him a share. I will then pay off my mortgage, pay off all my debts and pay my bills a year in advance and sponsor another two more children from a third world country. Then I will buy myself a reliable new car and plan for a nice holiday for me and my family. I will invest the rest of it (most likely in property) and fulfil my dream to own and operate my own business (to keep me busy whilst I'm completing my master's degree). Cheers!

1) Buy my parents a brand new house, just for them
2) Pay off my parents' debt
3) Buy myself a nice, relatively inexpensive, house
4) Build a recording studio
5) Put roughly $100,000 in retirement
6) The rest would go to personal causes - scholarship money for deaf/hard of hearing deaf kids, & other personal causes.

I would still plan to work because I know I need to work for the life I want.

First a 10th would go to my church. as our tithe.
We have 3 sons, I would give them some of the money, if they want it.
Do I pay income tax on this..??
I would probably move to a place that I don't have to take care of the yard and around. Because I am 80 yrs old and my husband is 84 and he has had a stroke....this would make things easier on both of us. Mayve hire a cook to do the cooking and some one to come in and clean the home.
That is all.

Thank you for letting me tell you about this.

I think I'll give the whole amount to serving the poor people in India and across the world. I don't want tax-free money and I don't want debt. I want to cover my expenses and my taxes with whatever I earn in a fair and square way. Even if I earn $1, I'll not spend $2, and not $0.2. That's my motto.

What I would do if I had $1,000,000.00 is:

Pay our Bills..................15,000
Pay House off..................60,000
Pay Car Loan...................25,000
Pay Truck Loan.................35,000
Remodle House..................40,000
Give Mom & Steve...............20,000+ 20,000 remodling home
Give Dad.......................10,000+ 20,000 remodling home
Give Brother Lee...............10,000
Give Brother Rodney & new fam..20,000
Give my husbans mom & Dad......20,000
Give my husbans Sister & fam...20,000
Give my husban Brother.........10,000
Buy new dream house...........400,000
New furnature..................30,000
Buy my mom a new car...........25,000
Savings for friends kid Lexie..35,000
Savings for friends kid Cutter.35,000
Savings for inlaws kid Alayna..35,000
Savings for inlaws kid Brandon.35,000
Savings for friends kid Tara...35,000
Hot tub........................10,000
Boat...........................35,000

Why I would spend 1,000,000.00 on that list is because I love and care for my family and with it being such a hard time for everyone I just want to see them happy. Of course who wouldn't pay there bills, cars and houses off.
Why remodle my home when I would get a new one, well thats easy give my hard working brother, that got out of the Marine Corps with no jobs out there, a safe home for him his new wife and baby a place. They live in a small one bedroom house with there 2 dogs, doesnt sound cosey does it?
My mom and dad extra money to remodle there house's houses, because the wear and tear us 3 kids put them through even though there old lets just say they need it espesally since no there getting some grand babies.
Opening savings accounts for my friends and families kids, well we all want the best for them and so they can accomplish there goals and dreams after high school.
Also my poor mom she works so hard for her and her new husban, us kids even though were grown and having our owns lives to keep track of. Just when things are goinggood for every one then something just has to go wrong. Her husban is a contractor but is out of a job she only makes 550.00 every 2 weeks, and now her car is breaking down on her when she needs it to go to work.
All in all now you can see even though I make sure things will go good for me I'm also thing of my family the most. I drive an hour to work every day and all I can think of is how I want things to get better not just better but way better for my family and I can bet you that is exactly what I would do.

First of all I would pay back all of the people who have helped me. Like Javier from Texas who gave me is left ear drum as I i lost my hearing in a massive plumbing accident. After that I would throw food at Scotty Dierking for all of the grief he has caused me. Next I would buy a car for a boy named Sean, for he has no big toe. this car would be accessible for all people without toes. Soon I would create my own empire made of stringed cheese. It is here I would have my servants feed me cheese by the gallon. However, I forgot I am lactose intolerant. as a result, I would have explosive dairihhea for 2 weeks. This would cause sever rectum issues. I would then need to take laxative (with my million dollars). This maybe how most people spend there fortune but I dont care Im original.

Many of the comments on here are great. I personally would invest the full amount into a mix of income producing assets with a target yield of around 6%, (currently easy to do). This would generate a pretax income of about $60,000 in the first year then 6%-12% more each year after that (thus beating long-term inflation). I would use the ~$60,000 to fund projects for myself and others (i.e. charity, parents, siblings, vacation's, etc.), which would now be sustainable for my lifetime since I won't be spending any of the principle ($1,000,000) just the income it generates. Since my wife and I have no consumer debt, it would be a nice addition to our already growing annual unearned income, thus shaving off a few years at the office.

One millions dollars.

Well I have lived a great life and I am still enjoying the life as a college sophomore and every expense is paid by my parents. I would keep maybe $75,000 to myself, $20,000 to my best-friend, $10,000 to my brother, $10,000 to my sister, $20,000 to my mom's charity fund where she buys christmas presents for at least 15 under privileged kids in our local school (which she already does every year out of her own pocket). Now I'm down to $865,000. Ok, i would donate $35,000 to the multiple local charities in my home town, $20,000 to certain extended family, $10,000 to my high school baseball program because we were always lacking funding even as the #2 team in the state. The rest of the money $800,000, I would give my parents. They have given me a life i could have never had without them. Buying me a new car when i totaled the first truck they bought me, sending me and my friends to florida to the vacation house, letting me go to Jamaica and paying for every penny, and the innumerable amounts of things money can buy and opportunities they have been able to offer me. It is impossible for me to ever love them and care for them as much as they have for me all of my life. And I may truly want this one million dollars, but i don't deserve it nearly as much as my parents do. I would almost feel better if they were the ones to receive the one million dollars because they could better spread the joy and money than me.

If I earn that much I would pay off my loan first then invest on stock market with caution to earn more and maybe start a small business. I would rather to make more instead of wasting it.

If I had 1 million dollars I would give the charity half of it
as I loved the way of my life I would lurve to help the needy.
The rest I would pay my bill etc. and buy ingredients to cook.
I would be a filial daughter and give it to my mother and father
to spend and half to my brother to help them to pay bills.
Considered not selfish as the rest of them I would put them
in my bank.
That’s about all.

If all is well and money is flowing through then I would proably Buy some abondened lots and turn them into car washes or a Liquor store . I would just build businesses . Show profits and sell them while there new.Id proably make the Quiznos in a double sized Area Where I could also sell Cisco products Like Cheesecakes and Pies . I would take the 1 million, and invest it for one year. Then after one year start taking earnings out and pay down debt and give gifts of cash to my direct family, do a little work on my house then give to several charitable organizations I know of. I would try to preserve the 1 million and grow it a little each year.
If you have a return of say 6%, that is 60,000 a year in income. Taxed at whatever rate, maybe 25% = $15,000. you have 45,000 left over. Not much. So you gotta be judicious or the 1 million will disappear and 5 years from now you will be saying, what happened to all that money. It can go quick. I have made over $1,000,000 in my life and how much have I saved, $45,000 , full mortgage on my home up to fair market value. That is it, 1,000,000 gone.

If I get a million dollars I would send half my

money to a poor school in Africa and invest half on stocks to get 1 million dollars again. Then with the

rest of my million dollars I would make my own shoe company called echo shoes made out of recycled

caprisuns. These shoes are modified to reduce global warming and keep the soil you step on fertilized.

Then when I reach my goal of 1 billion dollars I will send my company over seas and start selling my

echo friendly shoes in every country in the earth. Then when I get 1 trillion dollars I will set up a

charity fund for the poor countries effected by any natural disaster or just if they are poor. If the charity

fund goes well it will help change our world to a better place and if it doesn’t go well that would effect

my business income and might run me bankrupt.

Seriously, a lot of these comments are very far fetched. Granted some of them were written in 2007 but even then one million was (I wouldn't say No) chicken scratch. Given the exchange rate to the UK its about 7-750k which would buy you a modest town house in a 'good' area (schools, transport, crime (lack there of) etc) and with the 150k left you'd be surprised how little that would take you, as for start up businesses sure some of them are extremely successful but most are, sadly, misguided. Take for instance the organic food shop near me, great concept but the location (down a back alley) and competition from other shops makes it an (in my opinion) unstable business.
I'd love to give to family and friends but I know that I would really only be able to 'help' my brother and sister. Realalistically I would invest in land, (since farm land is aprox 10k/acre) which would then in the future have the potential to be developed further however this is long long long term investment and who knows what is going to happen then?
I do know one thing though, I would keep it totally secret, even from my partner and make anyone I gave money to to sign a waiver saying they coldn't say where they got it from. I don't need old 'friends' come out of the woodwork asking for a 'short term loan'
Yes I guess I am the grinch when it come sto these sort of things, but hey when I'm in my cavernous mansion, brandy in hand with a superior smirk across my face I'll.....I'll wonder where I squandered all my life.

I will invest it, and when I have 3 million dollars, I will buy 1 maserati gran turismo, 1 ferrari 612 scaglietti and 1 porsche boxter spyder, then I will continue getting more money and buy a mansion, and then probably live my life happy and millionare!

Now here is what I will do with 200 million dollars, all of the above and move to the mansion next to justin bieber's. So we can be friends! lol no i wont do that, i will move to a mansion in somewere in USA and live happy, but yes, i will meet justin bieber and christian beadles (search for him on youtube).

I am a dreamer! Because dream is free!!! lol

If I won a million bucks, tax free I would give 10% to churches and charity, give 10% to my friends and family, pay off all my debts and then invest the rest for retirement, my children's college educations and rainy days. I would do my best to invest wisely. I would choose a variety of investment vehicles with different levels of risk. I would invest most of the funds in relatively low risk bonds, mutual funds, and cash accounts but I would invest some in medium and high risk stocks, mutual funds, and real estate investments.

with a million dollars i would be happy....i would give 50% to charity and invest 25% in a buisness of my own. With the other 25% i would build a small secure home and buy plenty of land so that no good logging company's wouldnt be able to clear the land. i would soon after build a home or reward every one whom has ever been there for me in life as a token of my graditude. Depending on what i earn off of the buisness i would send regular checks to chruches and shelters, beacuse the way i see it, "Noone should eat a turkey if many cannot eat bread". This means i have no rght to eat well everynight when ever so many cannot afford a mcdonald dollar sandwich.

I would buy back the house my ex wife won during our divorce and now has to sell it, and move my sick mother in and take care of her in a nice quiet atmosphere. Then again, I would most likely save for retirement, set up a good financial nest egg for my daughter and son, and just continue being myself. Oh, did I mention I would finally realize my life long dream of having my own recording / production studio?
Most importantly, I would give to the local city mission as much as I could.
